Trash to treasure

Until Vélos started business three and a half years ago, owners of carbon fibre bicycles were doomed to throwing away damaged frames. However, Dan Burrows, a veteran of working with carbon fibre and composite materials in the boat-building industry, spotted the niche and opened Vélos so he could rescue those damaged bicycles and stop the flow of material into landfills.

“There’s no one else doing this professionally in New Zealand. We’re combining three different trades under one roof,” says Dan. “There’s composite repair, custom painting and mechanical servicing. We’ve put all of that together into one service centre for the entire country.”

The great advantage of repairing carbon fibre frames is that, once repaired, they’re as good as they ever were, which is why Vélos offers a lifetime guarantee on their work. “You reinstate the composite back to

its original structural integrity,” says Dan. “Unlike aluminium and steel products which retain a memory of the damage which can’t be removed.”

Dan was a competitive cyclist in days gone by and that passion intersected with his experience of working with composite materials to create Vélos. “When I started the business, I realised within the first week I was going to have to do the paintwork as well,” laughs Dan. “I had a bit of a background in painting from doing high-end work on

8 SPOTLIGHT

superyachts, so I just taught myself the necessary skills.”

Painting and design is the creative side of the business which Dan finds very satisfying. “I do it all myself currently, but we’re looking for someone we can train to take over from me. We need someone with a delicate touch and clear thinking – you need finesse. It’s something we have to teach.”

Dan explains that his business is another offshoot of the performance composites community that has built up in Warkworth around the specialist boat-building industry. “Sail GP is the hub of that,” he says. The relationship with Sail GP is a vital ingredient in Dan’s plans for the near future.

“When I was working with Sail GP, a lot of the offcuts and waste carbon fibre would end up in the skip and go to landfill. We’ve created a pathway for the marine and aerospace industries in New Zealand to take their offcuts and turn them into premium bicycle frames.”

In the two years spent developing the Vélos line of high-performance bicycles, Dan has teamed up with Dave Higgins, who used to be Avanti’s head of engineering and design, and who also designed the current generation of New Zealand Olympic t rack bicycles.

The hope is to have the first model in the Vélos range of bicycles available for sale this summer. “To begin with, it will be a road bike,” says Dan. “A gravel model is in the pipeline and we’ll develop more models after that. The repair side of the business is a smaller, regional thing, whereas the manufacturing of our own bikes offers global opportunities. We’ve taken all the lessons we’ve learned from fixing other people’s

bikes and put that knowledge into our own frames.

For cycling enthusiasts Dan is also starting up ‘The Vélos Ride’ which will depart from the Vélos service centre at 10/13 Gumfield Drive, Warkworth, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 6.30am. Everyone welcome!

Balancing act

An e-commerce dynamo, Sarah Gunn speaks to Junction about her role as Chapter Area Lead/General Manager at The Warehouse Group and how she maintains a healthy work-life balance.

Words Milly Nolan

Having enjoyed a successful career in e-commerce both in New Zealand and Australia, Sarah Gunn was an obvious choice to help conceptualise and bring the online retail store, TheMarket, to life. Tapped on the shoulder by a former work colleague, Sarah was beckoned to join a small team of four to help create a digital platform for The Warehouse Group, aimed at expanding their presence beyond their brick-andmortar stores. “The brief for TheMarket was to build a vibrant online marketplace with a broad range of local and international sellers to provide more options for kiwis with the convenience of local click and collect and returns enabled through leveraging The Warehouse Groups network of stores,” explains Sarah.

In 2019, TheMarket made its debut, instantly resonating with New Zealand customers due to its one-stop-shop approach. The concept encompassed everything from fashion and electronics to home décor and gardening supplies, all conveniently accessible for purchase in one place. Well-known New Zealand brands like Hyper Ride and Blunt as well as artisanal products are blended

alongside global giants such as Lacoste and Samsung, allowing customers to explore a wide range of products while still supporting local business.

TheMarket initially operated as a small independent entity akin to a true startup within The Warehouse group which includes The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, Torpedo7 and Warehouse Stationery. “The speed at which TheMarket grew was phenomenal” notes Sarah. “In such a short period, TheMarket brand gained impressive brand awareness through New Zealand, with a proud moment being a sponsor for Emirates Team New Zealand during the 2021 America’s Cup.” Now TheMarket has been able to take our learnings and is excited to introduce our third party range on The Warehouse website.

At the helm as General Manager of TheMarket, Sarah’s role has been all encompassing over the past five and a half years but she is grateful for the balance that living outside of the city brings. Having lived in the heart of Warkworth with her husband Tim and two children, Oscar and Matilda, for eight years, last year the family moved to their idyllic “forever home” which they built on a plot of land between Algies Bay and Snells Beach. “I just love everything about living up here.

On the weekends, there is nowhere I’d rather be. It is 100% worth the daily commute” enthuses Sarah. “We have a really busy social life on the weekends and I love that as it helps keep me connected to the area, which is important to me as working in the city most days of the week means I can feel quite disconnected to the community. We love to go to the Matakana Village Farmers' Market on Saturdays, zip across to Kawau in the summer, and very nearby we have one of our favourite beach picnic spots at Sc ott’s Landing.

Sarah has also found that seeking help from an external coach has been transformative in striking the right balance between life, motherhood and work. Sarah speaks with her coach, Rhonda Parry at Our Minds Matter, every three weeks. Rhonda helps Sarah live to her values and keeps her accountable to what matters to her the most. “Initially when I first started seeing Rhonda I thought, do I really need to do this? But each discussion is so rewarding with results beyond measure. It’s been a very healthy experience for me.”

Exercise is another pillar of Sarah’s life that helps her cope with work stress. “When things get really tough at work, I up my exercise,” she says. Running, in particular, serves as her trusty ally for clearing her mind

and maintaining mental clarity. Challenging herself with a couple of half marathons a year is not uncommon for Sarah, and this year she is boldly setting her sights on conquering the full Auckland marathon. “I’m by no means a fast runner,” laughs Sarah, “so there’s zero pressure to win the race, it’s more about the journey to get there. Some people find solace in meditation and yoga, but for me, going for a run does wonders mentally - it clears my head and sets the tone for the day. Discovering what keeps you grounded and balanced is crucial, and once you have that figured out, stick with it.”

Sarah attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her husband Tim. As a self-employed lawyer, Tim handles school drop-offs and pick-ups for their children, earning himself the endearing title of ‘ballet Dad’ - a nod to the many afterschool activities he chauffeurs the kids to. Sarah acknowledges that she wouldn’t have achieved what she has at TheMarket without his support. “Tim has been incredible, I’m now working on how I can up my contribution by spending more time with my family and building deeper connections to this beau tiful region.”

The podcast for parents like you

Warkworth local, Matilda Green along with her Untidy Podcast co-host, Hannah Davison, are welcoming listeners into their community with honest, real and supportive conversations that honour the person within the parent.

After meeting through Matilda’s love of the My Big Momen ts books, created by Hannah in partnership with Flicka Williams and Jo Roca, their friendship quickly blossomed and the pair knew they were destined to collaborate professionally. But on what? The answer came at a regular coffee date when a rogue leak appeared that only breastfeeding mothers have experienced. Untidy was born out of the desire to create a safe space where parents can be honest about their experiences and most of all laugh together.

“We wanted to talk about the real moments of parenthood that often aren’t talked about or that you don’t see on social media,” says Matilda; commenting that with the amount

of time we spend on social media it can skew our view of other people's reality, resulting in feeling alone in the rollercoaster of parenthood. The podcast is relaxed and informal, inviting listeners into a chat with mates, which is exactly the vibe the pair wanted to create.

Since February, weekly episodes of Untidy Podcast have been released, with quite the community of parents, all looking for support, advice or just a friendly chat, tuning in. Realising it can be hard to get out of the house or connect with friends and family, particularly when you have young children, Hannah says the podcast means “you can have that community in your ear wherever you

want it, you don’t have to be dressed, you don’t have to talk back or engage in any way but you feel the benefits of being uplifted.”

With some really interesting guests offering invaluable insights, Matilda notes, “It’s really nice being able to share information for free.” Offering advice that is genuinely helpful and can be implemented straight away, in a fun and informative setting with zero boundaries means listeners can take it or leave it. Often covering topics that can be viewed as taboo or just aren’t topics we tend to discuss openly, Matilda and Hannah want you to leave each episode feeling a bit more empowered as a parent.

former Black Ferns captain and part of the 2017 Rugby World Cup winning team, who discusses re-entering the workforce as an elite athlete after childbirth, the pair also reflected on some of their favourite guests to date. Including Hamish Blake, of the Australian comedy duo Hamish and Andy, who both Matilda and Hannah are big fans of. Dr Lucy Hone, a resilience expert who has experienced tragedy herself, and Morgan Penn, a sexologist who delved into the evolution of relationships postpartum and garnered great feedback from listeners.

Engaging with their community on the Untidy Podcast Instagram page, Matilda and Hannah encourage listeners to get in touch. Providing topic suggestions, questions for upcoming guests or simply saying hello, listeners are very much a part of the show…and they do respond to every message received! While analytics are great they both say there's nothing more exciting than when they’re approached in public about the podcast; reminding the pair there’s actual people out there benefitting from their content.

Untidy Podcast recently held its first ever live recording; hosted by One Mahurangi, the event was held in Warkworth and featured special guest and fellow local, Ha yley Holt

Spurred by their desire to extend the community aspect of the podcast, Matilda says “there’s something about having a bunch of like minded people in a room, having a shared experience and connecting with each other, that’s really powerful.” The event was a huge success and was hopefully the first of many with Matilda and Hannah saying they’d love to do more live events to have the opportunity to connect with listeners in person all over the country. If you missed out on tickets, the event sold out in three days, you can tune in to the episode with Hayley Holt now at the we bsite below.

Thriving amidst the challenges of motherhood

After many years working together in a clinical setting providing “ambulance at the bottom of the cliff” services, Laura, a psychologist, and Kirsten, a physiotherapist and health coach, both knew they were ready for a change.

They found that the skills required to help someone recover from serious health difficulties were also the skills that enable individuals to thrive and excel in their lives. But very often it wasn’t until an individual was in crisis that they had the opportunity to learn how to attend to their own wellbeing effectively. They set about exploring how they could utilise their combined 30 years of clinical experience to support people to achieve and maintain optimal wellbeing and ride through the challenges of life with greater ease.

In late 2019 the first iteration of their new venture, CALM for Mums was born. Starting with what they knew best, being mums to young children themselves, they developed a program to provide practical solutions and

strategies to mothers across New Zealand to regain calm and collected versions of themselves as they learned to parent.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 it felt like the course had never been more needed. As parents across the world scrambled to find balance as they juggled homeschooling with work and “normal” family life, CALM for Mums quickly shifted online. Laura says “we were able to bring groups of women together in a novel way for an hour once a week that enabled them to hit the reset button. We knew how tough things were, as we too were living the struggle within our own families. Our program felt like a great way to support mums doing it tough while probably reminding ourselves to put time into our own wellbeing in the process!”

“The difference we wanted to achieve with this program was that it was not going to be another course that told people what to do,” says Kirsten. “With a plethora of health and wellbeing advice at your fingertips people can often feel overwhelmed with where to begin and become rendered into inaction. We incorporated essential tools from our clinical practice to ensure people could understand why they wanted to make change”.

As Laura explains, “working from knowing what is important to you is essential in living a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling. You are far more likely to choose actions that support your wellbeing when you have good alignment with your values. Secondly, we need the skills to recognise the warning signs that we are struggling or heading that way.

Building self-awareness into the program was crucial to enable mums to know when they needed to choose an action that supported their wellbeing.

As time has gone on Laura and Kirsten have adapted their courses to also support people in the workplace, to address some of the mental strain businesses are up against post-pandemic. Their most recent course, Realise.Focus.Thrive, is designed to empower business leaders to approach these challenges from a foundation of insight, confidence and personal wellbeing so they can help achieve sustainable high performance, both at work and at home. “We love the flow-on effects we see when people take these tools home and then come back and tell us about the better connections they have with their families. It makes it all worthwhile”, says Kirsten.

Laura and Kirsten will be running CALM for Mums in Term 4 for six people minimum. Register your interest through their website and in the meantime, check out their free downloads to get started on your wellbe ing journey.

Shining a light on commercial property funds

Oyster’s retail investment manager Rich Lyons reveals the qualities that attract investors to commercial property.

Kiwis have long favoured residential property as their go-to investment and a means of securing their financial future, believing it’s “as safe as houses”. But for some, owning a property, whether to live in, or as an investment, is out of bounds due to the hefty deposit or high levels of maintenance, or both.

That doesn’t mean you should rule out property as an investment option altogether. While not as widely understood as residential investment, unlisted commercial property funds also provide investors with a similar tangible, bricks and mortar investment, minus the admin and high barriers to entry.

In a nutshell, investing in an unlisted property fund allows investors to buy commercial property in “bite-sized” amounts alongside other investors.

“As far as investment strategies go, commercial property is a long-term play that has the potential to deliver strong investment returns over time, while also providing the opportunity to be paid monthly cash distributions”

Oyster Property Group is one of New Zealand’s leading unlisted commercial property fund managers and has been providing retail and wholesale investors with access to quality commercial property investment options and consistent returns for more than 20 years.

With approximately $1.9 billion in assets under management, its experienced team of property experts purchase quality properties of significant scale in the office, industrial, and large format retail sectors, which are then managed in-house by a team of dedicated property managers with deep sector knowledge.

The firm implements active fund management strategies, and an in-house investment relations team provides regular updates and reporting to investors.

Working to a robust buying criterion, Oyster looks for commercial properties in sought-after locations, close to amenities and transport links, where appropriately zoned land is in tight supply.

Our investment philosophy is to target quality commercial property with enduring occupier demand, that’s well located and close to amenities, and has reputable tenants.

Stability is a big drawcard for our investors. Generally, commercial property isn’t subject to the same sentiment-based volatility investors can experience in the share market and has proved its ability to weather periods of major economic instability.

We’re proud to provide thousands of New Zealanders access to both wholesale and retail investment opportunities, that offer long-term investment returns, backed by strong fundamentals and the resilience of the commercial property asset class.

A new environment for learning

N kau School, an independent primary school with a beach front location in Snells Beach, offers a Montessori and outdoor classroom philosophy.

The Montessori method is an educational approach created by Dr Maria Montessori in Italy in the early 1900s. Since then it has been part of mainstream education in Europe, USA and the UK. It is based on the key principle of respect for the child. Children are seen as capable and competent individuals who deserve respect and trust.

The Montessori method encourages teachers to create an environment in which children feel valued and supported in their growth and development. Development of the whole child as a principle means this form of education seeks to develop the child's physical, social, emotional and cognitive abilities. This is achieved through a variety of hands-on, sensory-based activities a nd experiences.

Preparation for real-life experiences is another important principle of Montessori education, emphasising practical, real-life applications of skills and knowledge. Children are encouraged to engage in activities that are meaningful and relevant to their lives and are provided ‘freedom within limits’, another key principle, while doing so. Giving children the freedom to explore and learn within a structured environment provides safety and security.

Emphasising the importance of allowing children to learn at their own pace, within a supportive and nurturing environment, the Montessori method focuses on collaboration and community. Children learn to work together, share and respect each other, resolve conflicts in a positive and peaceful manner, thereby fostering a sense of community.

The importance of developing positive relationships among children and encouraging them to work together to achieve common goals is another key focus. Overall, the Montessori method is a child-centred approach that allows children to learn at their own pace, pursue their own interests, and develop their own unique potential.

Nīkau School is dedicated to providing an environment that nurtures critical thinking, creativity and character development, while maintaining a strong academic foundation using the Montessori curriculum and materials. The school is fortunate to be in a beautiful beach-front location at Snells Beach, providing its students with the benefits of being out in nature every day.

Nīkau School currently caters to children 5-12 years-old, with both full-time and one-day school options.

Te Arai Links opened its South Course on 1 October 2022, and will open the North Course exactly one year later on 1 October 2023. Two world-class golf courses, each adding to the beautiful Te Arai coastline.

the same designer as sister course Tara Iti, the North Course at Te Arai Links starts and finishes on the ocean. Showcasing the beauty of the natural landscape and featuring more inland golf in comparison to the South Course. Across the property there are multiple accommodation offerings; including 48 Suites, 19 two-bedroom Ocean Cottages and six four-bedroom Villas.

Guests have a variety of dining options on-site. The more casual of these are “Ric’s Restaurant”, situated on The Playground. The Playground is a 2-acre practice putting green with 12-18 holes set up in a course arrangement on any given day. The Playground is ideal for a familyfriendly putting competition after a round of golf, while enjoying some snacks and refreshments from Ric’s. Ric’s is open to the public, by reservation only.

Due to open in 2024, The Ocean Restaurant is perfectly positioned, with views across the 18th fairway and to the Pacific Ocean beyond.

Te Arai Links is now accepting Green Fee Play. Green Fee players are able to book tee times online up to 28 days in advance of their preferred date of play. Bookings are open now with tee times available on the South Course from 28 September onwards and on the North Course from 2 October onwards.

The North and South Courses will alternate daily between a ‘Private course’ for Te Arai Links members and their accompanied guests and a ‘Resort Course’ for resort guests and green fee players. Because of this alternating schedule, it is important to note that resort guests and green fee players will be unable to play both courses on the same day.

Te Arai Links is set to become one of the world’s greatest golf destinations. With its proximity to Auckland, and the abundance of activities to explore on and around the site, the resort is much more than a stopover. We believe that, with all it has to offer, Te Arai Links will become the focal point of many New Zealand golf holidays.

Pottery, passion and a new beginning in Matakana

Brendan Adams has been making a living from pottery for over 30 years. Most of that time was spent in his Point Chevalier home studio where he and his wife, Kathryn, established themselves as an important part of the Auckland pottery scene. In 2019 the couple realised they had reached a transition, Point Chevalier had changed and their children had left home. It was time to find a new way to live.

After searching and imagining themselves in different locations, the area that most stood out, with its relaxed lifestyle and the many creatives living and working in the area, was Mahurangi. One of the first tasks on Brendan's agenda was setting up his pottery studio in his new Matakana home, but he found himself pleasantly distracted by an unexpected preoccupation; gardening.

When he embarked on his journey to Matakana, cultivating a garden wasn't high on his list of priorities. However, transforming the overgrown garden into a flourishing

native bush and vegetable garden, has been a great source of pleasure.

Early on, Brendan’s pottery work focused on producing bright coloured, decorative slip cast ceramics, originally using Crown Lynn clay. This was a great process to produce domestic wares on a scale that he could make a living from. Over the years he has been drawn to more hands on wheel work. Each work that he has produced has always been unique, either with hand decoration or glazing.

Alongside this Brendan has always created

sculptural pieces utilising other materials with ceramics, such as steel, brass, aluminium and wood. These works have been sold and exhibited in galleries throughout New Zealand, and in major competitions and exhibitions where he has won several awards. He is represented in Auckland Museum, Arts House Trust, and other regional and private collections. Brendan is carrying on developing concepts and themes in his sculptural work. He has an exhibition at Art By The Sea in Takapuna which opens Saturday 11 November. This exhibition will

Coco was born in Mexico City, in a family where painting and music were a daily pleasure and distraction. He grew up amongst oil paintings, paintbrushes, charcoal pencils, art books and music on vinyl records, shaping his early childhood memories. Being a restless child, art was the natural resource through which he channelled his energy and communicated with the outside world.

As an adolescent, forms and colour became the ideal medium to express his ideas and emotions. This was reinforced when in primary school he combined his nickname, “Coco”, with the term “Popol Vuh”, the epic

Mayan culture account of the creation of the world, giving him a greater enthusiasm for the way thoughts can be transferred to the hands to create; thus becoming a unique, incredible language.

“Creer es Crear - To believe is to create.” Everything that Cocolvu has created is engrained with this motto. The creation process starts with an idea, the thought of the possibility of something that could exist but doesn't yet. The careful process of interweaving memories, ideas, dreams, desires and the undeniable urge to communicate it, in order to make a connection.

At Matakana Retreat, Cocolvu was entrusted with the mural for the African Safari tent. It welcomes you with an explosion of warm bright colours standing out from all the greens and blues of this magical place

surrounded by trees and hills. The mural celebrates the connection between couples and the rebirth of a relationship that uses nature as a means to reset.

Coco has the incredible ability to be constantly amazed by life. He celebrates life with joy and with a contagious laughter only a few are immune to. It is through this lens that Coco was able to interpret Dianna and Damon’s vision, the owners of Matakana Retreat, and turn the magical experience of reconnecting with your partner into a mural.

If you want to be off the grid and reconnect with nature and your partner, definitely visit Matakana Retreat and let this wonderful mural be the one that greets you at the start of y our stay.

The next Pipi evolution

The Pipi, formerly known as Smashed Pipi and Pipi Gallery, is a family run Mangawhai art gallery with a passion for appreciating art and connecting people to New Zealand made products.

New owners, Arran and Angella Hockenhull, bought the Pipi Gallery from Arran’s mother, Barbara, who has owned the business for many years and is a well known potter and truly loved Mangawhai local.

Arran inherited his creativity and love of pottery from his parents and has had a lifelong involvement with the business. Angella started out her creativity with mosaics but pottery has enabled her to combine her love of nature, gardening and flowers in her own style of work.

Together, Arran and Angella, are intending to share a different slice of Mangawhai’s paradise, peace and tranquillity; renaming and relocating ‘the Pipi’ to sit in a rural setting amongst farmland and vineyards close to the Tanekaha walk in King Road, Mangawhai.

Still offering a wonderful selection of exclusively New Zealand made products, including pottery, pounamu and petals; the store will give the couple the opportunity to showcase their own pottery creations as well as a range of other New Zealand potters work, glasswork and other boutique gifts.

Pipi Petals fresh flowers will be on hand with fresh posies available daily and a pick your own seasonal option utilising the couple's gardens. The ever popular silk flowers will also be available from the shop.

A place to sit and relax is being created within the Garden Art oasis. Amongst the lush garden you will find Per’se, a coffee cart offering devonshire tea, coffee and ice creams. The name Per’se is short for Persephone, the goddess of Spring and is linked to Daffodils, which symbolise rebirth and new beginnings.

Arran and Angella are very excited and passionate about what they are doing and are looking forward to opening again for you all to enjoy. They were aiming for Spring, but realistically are hoping the Pipi will be up and running for the Summer.

For the time being enquiries are welcome.

Work can be viewed on the website and orders/contact can be made via email.

Embarking on a new build for herself was both an exhilarating and nerve-wracking endeavour for Beata Kelly. With a background in project management and interior design, she felt well-prepared to tackle the construction of her dream home, confident that her skills would translate seamlessly from managing projects for clients to managing her own personal project.

Beata and her husband Dean had wanted to move to Waipu for a while and when the opportunity finally presented itself everything fell into place swiftly. Beata knew that the key to a successful project started with meticulous planning. She had a clear vision of her dream home, a modern yet cosy oasis that would reflect her personal style and functional needs.

Drawing on her design expertise, she collaborated with the in-house architect from their building company and got a set of blueprints, considering every aspect of the layout, from the placement of windows to optimise natural light to the selection of materials that would blend aesthetic beauty with durability.

Beata loves working with creative people that contribute to and enhance each other’s vision, and was excited to have her new build be a great example of this collaboration amongst specialists.

Her project management experience proved invaluable during the construction phase. Although her chosen building company was responsible for all day-to-day project management she was specifying a lot of the finishing materials. She was keenly aware that time is money in construction, and she ensured that everything was delivered when expected so as not to delay progress.

Beata was able to make quick choices about finishes, fixtures, and other design elements, ensuring that every detail aligned with her vision. Her expertise in interior design allowed her to create a cohesive and harmonious space, where colour palettes, textures, and furnishings blended seamlessly to create an inviting and functional home.

However Beata also knew that building a house would be a monumental undertaking that would come with its fair share of trials and tribulations. From the initial conception

to the final nail, the journey was a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges. And Beata faced some unique challenges; the emotional investment in her own home was substantial, and the pressure to make everything perfect was immense. But as the project neared completion, Beata marvelled at how her vision had come to life. Her new home is a testament to her skills in project management and interior design. Every room tells a story, reflecting her personality and lifestyle. She has successfully translated her knowledge into a beautiful new build, where form and function coexist harmoniously.

A journey filled with highs and lows, joy and frustration, setbacks and triumphs. Through it all, the vision of a home of their own is what kept the dream alive. “Building a house is not just about constructing walls and roofs; it’s about building memories, dreams, and a place to call home”, says Beata. And at the end of the process that is exactly what has been achieved. Beata and Dean not only ended up with their dream home but also a showcase of Beata’s interior design work.

A busy year for the Warkworth Wine Academy

The Warkworth Wine Academy (WWA) is dedicated to sharing its passion and enjoyment of wine and promoting the Matakana Wine Trail through educational talks and shows. This year the best way to do this was to take the show on the road; and enjoy a full weekend retreat!

Owner and operator, Daniel Millaire, has been lecturing all over the region in the last year, presenting his “Wine Appreciation Show” to a variety of groups, including the Warkworth Rotary Club, the Warkworth Oaks Retirement Village and various social club fundraisers to name a few.

The ninety-minute show is not only educational but a lot of fun. It demystifies wine in straightforward ways so every glass can be enjoyed with three of the senses - sight, smell and taste - something humans have been doing for millennia. Distinctive styles and tastes are demonstrated simply using six different wines, served alongside amusing stories, which makes it an entertaining time for all involved. Regardless of your knowledge you’ll learn something new about wine and enhance your appreciation for it.

Once again, Warkworth Wine Academy hosted an unforgettable wine weekend at the stunning DangelaA Boutique Lodge. This time three couples enjoyed a unique experience. None were wine connoisseurs going into the weekend, but all shared the same enthusiasm for learning, having fun and enjoying a wine or two. After the first night, the group was totally enchanted by the surroundings at DangelA Boutique Lodge, the quality of the food and the extensive selection of wines. Of all the annual weekends away they’ve shared this was the most amazing experience, leaving them with memories and wine knowledge to last a lifetime!

The weekend started with the lodge’s signature welcome drink followed by a lecture on sparkling wines and Champagne. The history and the different techniques in the making of these wines, and the tasting of the different styles, is fascinating and always compelling. After this lecture a casual dinner was served ending with a cheeseboard and a stunning NZ Syrah enjoyed around t he fireplace. The next evening a ninety-minute talk compared over 12 different wines of all styles and types from across the globe. A fabulous lecture that was followed by a sumptuous five-course meal, each course served with a wine to perfectly match the food, which made

for an animated and lively dinner. By the end of the night, all “the problems of the world” had been solved and many laughs had be en shared.

The weekend finished with the DangelA Boutique Lodge Champagne breakfast before the group headed to Matakana Estate Vineyard for a local wine tasting to end an incredible wine fiesta weekend! Celebrating 120 years of local history

Mark your calendars for Saturday 25 November when Matakana Village Pub will be hosting a fantastic celebration to commemorate the last 120 years of Matakana and the local area.

The ‘Matakana House’, built in 1903, was a boarding house before it was a local pub, mainly hosting dairy and shed hands that were working in the local area.

It is undeniable that Matakana has seen rapid change and development in recent years, not too long ago local farmers were herding their sheep and cattle down the main street of Matakana. Now, Saturdays in the village are abuzz with Aucklanders escaping the city, tourists discovering local wineries and locals enjoying the exceptional food Matakana has to offer.

To honour the heritage of the area, Matakana Village Pub will host a celebration, held on the 120th anniversary of its establishment, 25 November.

There will be live music to celebrate the past 120 years of your historic local pub. A number of wonderful local suppliers will be offering their excellent locally sourced food and drinks, with further details still to come.

As the Matakana area has grown the Pub has always held a local feel as a great community meeting place for the area and its people.

It takes a village to make a good local pub! 09 422 7518 | www.TheMatakana.co.nz

Second nature by Healthy Kelsi

With a well established social media following, a bestselling cookbook and an app under her belt, find out the latest endeavour of local recipe developer, Kelsi Boocock.

Kelsi started her food blog, Healthy Kelsi, in 2020 during the first covid lockdown. Her and her partner, Andrew, were meant to head off overseas travelling for the next few years. Having recently finished a business degree she ended up leaning in a different direction, starting up an Instagram page ‘Healthy Kelsi’ where she shares lots of recipes, wellness tips and her wholesome life in New Zealand. Healthy Kelsi was intended to be a personal

project, striving to help people find a balance with health, wellness, exercise, mindfulness and enjoyment. But over the last few years Kelsi has grown the blog into her full time job, with over 400,000 collective social media followers, cookbooks, an app and now her newest venture, Second Nature prot ein powder.

The idea for a protein powder came from her followers. She was getting asked hundreds

of times a day what powder she used. But with her own criteria of delicious, allnatural, plant-based, and great for baking, she struggled to find a product she could h appily recommend.

At that point, Kelsi and co-founder Andrew realised the only way to endorse a product that ticked all the boxes, was to make one. One without any nasties, additives, thickeners or sugar. “The process of formulating a

46

protein powder was very daunting at first”, says Kelsi. It’s actually the main reason she’s put off creating her own product for so long, saying “I wasn’t really sure where to start.”

Fortunately the pair have a friend whose experience with sourcing ingredients helped them greatly when testing and retesting different flavour combinations. After a lot of back and forth and extensive testing, a pea protein was chosen as the base, with minimal ingredients added to keep the formulation clean and natural.

As a high-quality protein source that’s easily digestible, pea protein is suitable for any holistic health seeker no matter their dietary requirements. Firm believers that being healthy isn’t about limitations or fad diets, and instead is about fuelling your body and having fun, Kelsi and Andrew are excited to help you do that too.

Second Nature protein powder will be available from 15 October.

Events venue with the wow factor

On his arrival in this area Captain Cook commented: “We had no sooner come to an [anchor] than we caught between 90 and 100 Breams, [a fish so-called] this occasioned my giving this place the name of Bream Bay.” Waipu itself was later settled by Scottish immigrants led all the way from Nova Scotia by the Reverend Norman McLeod. Waipu has captivated explorers for hundreds of years.

As you approach the junction heading north, instead of turning right into Waipu township, a short scenic drive through rolling hills and native bush will lead you to your destination, Camdeboo Hill Station. Once through the front gate, you will be greeted by commanding views, a collaboration of native bush, mountain peaks and ocean; giving your arrival a genuine ‘’wow!’’ moment.

The property is named after the famous 14,500 hectare Camdeboo National Park and Wildlife Reserve in South Africa. Fittingly, the Khoi word, Camdeboo, means ‘green valley’. Hill stations have long been a place for

recuperation and relaxation, with their history dating back to colonial times, and that is the intent for Camdeboo Hill Station.

The main guest house sits proudly as the overseer of this 31-hectare property. You really do feel you are on top of the world. The contemporary barn-style homestead boasts six large suites, the décor of each one taking you to a different place the owners have come to love during their travels. And the “Beekeepers Cottage” is a charming space where a bride and groom can enjoy their own little haven.

One of the most important aspects of any special occasion is a pictorial record of the event. Camdeboo Hill Station offers an Instagram-worthy backdrop including a panoramic vista of Bream Bay. Its unique setting is just waiting to be captured by any worthy photographer.

When Penny and Chrissie were given the opportunity to promote this special place, it was love at first sight. NZ Luxe have

recently expanded their valet and yacht charter business to both the Northland and Auckland Regions and can now offer bespoke land excursion packages, luxury accommodation and social event venues. Both directors have family ties to the Northland area and are excited about this property’s potential to host quality events, whether the goal is high end luxury or boho chic. They will soon be hosting an open day to showcase this venue, to allow all industry vendors to discover its beauty f or themselves.

It is the perfect canvas for weddings, corporate or individual occasion events and can host up to 32 guests. NZ Luxe are flexible and open minded in their pursuit of each client’s vision, and a dedicated coordinator is also available to build the perfect day from the ground up.

Rallying for community wellness

It all began with an email, an inspiring thread that brought together individuals in the Mahurangi district with a shared passion for holistic wellness. From this humble beginning a remarkable journey unfolded over the last year and continues to organically evolve.

The intention was simple yet profound, to create a vibrant network of professional natural wellness services that would invigorate our local community. Amidst the challenges of recent years, an inspired idea took root, giving birth to the concept of a local community Wellness Hub; a haven for healthy options for the mind, body and soul. A place for people to come together, find support, explore and enhance wellbeing, guided by dedicated health and wellb eing practitioners.

Momentum grew and culminated in the hugely successful, inaugural Health & Wellness Expo held in July 2022 at Warkworth Town Hall. This marked the initial unveiling of the Wellness Hub. But the vision went further; a nexus of wellness, accessible to all. The collective effort grew with the forming of a Hub Collective, featuring practitioners from

diverse backgrounds. Supporters rallied, giving rise to the "Friends of the Hub" initiative, uniting for communal wellness.

Early pop-up café meet-ups fostered community connections, yet people wanted more, especially to understand and experience the wellness modalities for themselves and their families. The Hub demystified wellbeing by offering monthly connection open days for conversations and free mini-therapy sessions starting in Matakana. The response was h eart-warming.

Today, the Wellness Hub's story unfolds with dedication, chapter by chapter; a community rallying for health, embracing emotional wellbeing, bodily wellness, and prevention. The goal of the Hub’s core team is to create a permanent space where practitioners can offer guidance

and natural therapies. The Wellness Hub's impact resonates, a story told through mini-sessions and shared experiences. The commitment remains, to enrich the community's wellbeing, one chapter and one session at a time.

Partners in life and fitness

Fiona Frost is the co-owner of Frost Fitness, the mega gym at Warkworth. Fiona has a passion for helping people be the best that they can be. Her background is in teaching, mentoring and performance coaching.

Fiona’s journey into the small business world and the gym industry has been an interesting adventure, which she says would never have been possible if it weren’t for her husband, Danny Frost. Fiona believes having the right person beside you, who believes in you and pushes you to be the best version of you, is the key to success. “Danny and I both believe in each other and we are each other's biggest supporters.”

When Fiona moved to Warkworth from the North Shore three years ago, she knew that she wanted a change in direction with her career but was unsure of what the future would bring. Danny was already a shareholder of a gym, and when the opportunity presented itself she bought out

his business partner and they decided to go into busi ness together.

It was a huge decision at the time as the couple were newly engaged and had only recently bought a house together. “We actually hadn't known each other for that long! Everything that we’ve achieved has been done fast. We met and were engaged within three months, bought a house after six months and then went into business together within a year of meeting! We just love living life and getting things done. There is a lot of laughter amongst the hard work when we are together,” says Fiona.

Raising three kids, working full time, surviving lockdown and being newly married while

taking on a business in a new town has had its ups and downs, but Fiona has blossomed as a business owner. She’s loving the process of developing their brand, helping people to succeed and achieve their dreams and goals.

Fiona understands the struggles some people face when entering a fitness centre for the first time, as she has struggled with her own health due to an autoimmune disease. “Life can be very tough, and if I can do something to help someone get through their day or to achieve a smile, then all the hard work and sleepless nights are worth it,” says Fiona.

Gardening calendar

Gardening is an earthly delight. Whether it is a passionate hobby, therapy for the soul or a way to put the best possible food on your table, gardening is an activity that knows no limits. Maybe now is a good time to get your hands in the soil and polish up those green thumbs!

Kumara

Kumara are a crop that likes warmth. They are frost tender, so October or November is a good time to plant out suckers. They can be planted as late as December in the Auckland area.

The quickest way to get started is to buy kumara shoots (tipu) from your garden centre and plant them as soon as possible. Make sure you keep the tipu sitting in water until you plant them out. You can also propagate your own tipu from a kumara tuber. Cut a kumara tuber in half horizontally and put it into a shallow container with moist sand or water in the base. Make sure your kumara is in a consistently warm place. After 1 to 2 weeks green tipu will appear from the tuber. Let them grow until they are 10 to 15 cm long. Carefully cut the tipu from the kumara and put them into water to develop roots. You need to allow 4 weeks minimum if you are growing your own tipu.

Your kumara will grow best in a free draining soil that has a hard pan about 30 cm down the soil profile. This encourages the kumara roots to travel horizontally once the roots hit the harder soil beneath. The kumara tubers will then develop along the root line. Above ground kumara plants make a lot of green growth, so allow plenty of room for your kumara patch. If you do not have the hard pan in your soil, plant into soil that has not been dug over in preparation, as you would do with most vegetables. This leaves the soil firmer and discourages the roots from growing too deeply.

To plant, place the kumara tipu into the planting hole. Space them 30 to 45 cm apart. Water in well. Allow 120 to 150 days to harvest. In Autumn the above ground vines will yellow and begin to die back. To harvest, cut away and remove the remaining vines. Carefully use a garden fork to dig up the tubers. Put the tubers in a sunny dry position to cure for several days and then store them in a cool dry place.

Local artists feature in NZ’s biggest sculpture exhibition

Five local artists will exhibit their work at NZ Sculpture OnShore, the country’s largest outdoor art event, which runs from 4-19 November this year, raising funds for Women’s Refuge NZ.

The sculptural works by Ray Haydon (Warkworth), Kim Logue (Wellsford), Louise McRae (Matakana), Karen Walters (Sandspit) and Walter Yeoman (Waipu) range from soaring wrought iron pieces to intimate observations of the world around us.

Their pieces will be viewed by more than 20,000 people expected to attend the iconic event held at Operetu Fort Takapuna, Auckland which is now in its 27th year. Since inception, it has raised more than $2 million for Women’s Refuge to support the victims of domestic violence, the organisation’s largest public fundraising event.

The exhibition, which returns this year after a five-year hiatus, will showcase a record number of 130 works made by 100 artists from around the motu.

NZ Sculpture OnShore chair Sally Dewar says she is looking forward to welcoming Junction’s local artists, some of whom are event stalwarts.

“Visitors to the exhibition return year after year due to the incredibly high standard of

sculpture on display. Works from artists who have exhibited in previous years such as Walter Yeoman, Kim Logue and Ray Haydon are always draw cards. We are very excited to welcome Karen Walters and Louise McRae for the first time as their artwork is exciting and inviting.”

Walter Yeoman’s work Ancient Flow is made from recycled kauri from the original Waipu Kauri Dam. Sustainability is at the heart of his work: "Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance," he says.

Kim Logue’s work Lichen Sentinels comprises three repurposed totara posts found on her Tomarata farm. Logue enjoys creating abstract forms inspired by minutiae found in nature.

Ray Haydon’s work Signal is a monumental five-metre-high work in corten steel, directing the viewer skywards.

Karen Walters’ seven Vessels of Wellness are inspired by her Ngapuhi whakapapa and the practice of Rongoa medicine. Carved in

ancient rimu, each piece stands around 1.8 metres high. Walters says: "Each work references the beauty of strength and resilience which is often gained through pain and suffering, making a statement about the ongoing need to focus on one's health an d wellbeing."

Louise McRae’s 1.8-metre-high Naked Truth is an abstract work inspired by Lucian Freud’s series of nudes. Beaten aluminium and copper strips, painted in matte automotive paints make it an arresting work to ponder.

These sculptures, together with many other soaring sculptures, sound and light art works and site-specific installations will be exhibited on the stunning cliff top site of Operetu Fort Takapuna and available for sale. With its Hauraki Gulf backdrop, the exhibition is well worth a day out with family or friends. Purchase tickets via the we bsite below.
