Speedgolfswing and sprint

“A good friend of mine from Taranaki had been trying to get me into speedgolf for several years and I said, ‘Mike, why would I want to run around the golf course?’ My only regret is I didn’t get into it sooner,” says Craig Russell of Speedgolf North.

Craig is passionate about this new form of the game and lists a variety of reasons you might want to run around the golf course. “If y ou like golf, but your time is short, speedgolf is perfect. Instead of taking four and a half hours, you can do 18 holes in under an hour. Or 9 holes in 30 to 40 minutes! It’s obviously great for your fitness, and when you’re running on the golf course, you’re thinking about golf, not running. If you play 18 holes, that’s a seven-kilometre run. Getting out there and getting fit is also great for your mental health.” Amazingly, Craig says it has also improved his golf technique. “I’ve discovered you really don’t need three practice swings,” he laughs.

There are some rules specific to speedgolf. Your final score is a combination of the number of shots taken, added to your elapsed running time. For example, if you shoot an 80 and it takes you 60 minutes to run the course, your total is 140. You are only allowed a maximum of seven clubs, but Craig says most people use between three and five, although some people use just one. “There’s a lot of strategy involved,” says Craig. “Each extra club adds about two minutes of running time to your total for 18 holes. You also don’t want to be shooting long over the greens because it means more running. Better to go a bit short and stay in the centre. Bunkers, water hazards and going into the rough all add a lot of time.”

In order not to disrupt traditional golfers too much, speedgolfers tend to play early or late. Craig is part of a group in Whangarei that starts between 6.30-7am. “We call it 18 before 8. We play 18 holes, have a shower at the club, take a quick bit of time to socialise and then we still get to work by 8.30am!”

He is also involved with another group that plays twilight speedgolf at 7pm at Waipū. The Waipu Golf Club is hosting the North Island champs on the weekend of 23-24 March, and Craig will be there organising and competing. “It’s not like traditional golf where you need to be quiet and walk everywhere. There’s music playing, we have an emcee starting people off, golfers are racing to and fro, and people are enjoying drinks and food. It’s a family environment as well so kids can come up and watch Dad or Mum run around the golf course, and it’s over and done with quickly.”

Craig is excited about hosting the event at Waipū because 14 of the 18 holes can be seen from the clubhouse, making it easy for spectators to enjoy the event. He’s expecting about 40 competitors and anywhere up to 100 spectators, so it should be a fun and action-packed weekend. “There’s a good crew coming from Taranaki, including the current speedgolf world champion, Jamie Reid,” says Craig.

Not all clubs host speedgolfers but Junction readers are invited to come and try it out at Waipu, every Tuesday from 7pm. Everyone is welcome, you don’t need to be a golfer or have an existing membership, just pay a green fee on the day. Further details can be found on the Facebook page.

– Jenny Schollum Having faith in Puhoi

Small communities survive and thrive on the basis of their volunteers. This is epitomised by the dedication of people like Jenny Schollum of Puhoi who was recently awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community and heritage preservation.

“When I arrived in Puhoi in 1970, the older women wanted to meet the new brides. They discovered I could play cards and drive a car. They couldn’t drive and they loved to play 500 so they organised me to pick a car load up and go to someone’s place to play cards for the afternoon. I would ask them all sorts of questions about the Schollum family and that was the start of my interest in local history. I just collected all those stories,” Jenny reflects.

Around 1972, at the annual celebration of the arrival of the Bohemians at Puhoi, a Schollum matriarch, about 90 years old, was attending and she solidified Jenny’s nascent interest in the family history. “She was dressed all in black and I sat at her feet for the afternoon,

enjoying the music of the band and talking to this older woman. She had so many stories and I was fascinated. The Puhoi they developed was such an amazing place, and it still is.”

Retaining and enhancing that historical character in Puhoi is a conscious decision by the community. “The historical society was formed from a group that deliberately set out to keep Puhoi with its original character,” says Jenny. “They were very much against the subdivision that went ahead, but it brought so many good people into Puhoi who appreciated the character of the town. We may not have survived without them.”

What motivates Jenny is the desire to keep

the memories of the original settlers alive, and acknowledge what they achieved and what they were like. “At the museum, we’re compiling folders about each family and trying to get everything we know stored in one place. Each time we think we’ve exhausted an avenue of enquiry, suddenly something new will turn up. I used to love doing jigsaw puzzles and this is like doing jigsaws, but with a purpose.” Folders have been compiled for eight families, but there are still another 15 to go, so there’s plenty of work ahead.

For the first settlers, a strong Catholic faith and pitching in to help each other helped the community to survive, along with generous assistance of local Māori, shares Jenny.

She believes that atmosphere of faith and helping each other is still what keeps the village going, and that’s what Jenny loves ab out Puhoi.

The Catholic church in Puhoi is a beautiful building and Jenny was involved with a dedicated team who organised its renovation between 2009 and 2013. “The church is a big part of my life and I’ve played the organ there nearly every Sunday since 1983. Being part of the team that organised the restoration of the church is one of the things I’m most proud of.”

Jenny has held posts with the historical society as president, secretary, treasurer, historian, museum coordinator, archivist and newsletter editor. She is part of the team that organises the annual celebration of the arrival of the Bohemians in Puhoi. She is also involved in the ANZAC day celebrations, Puhoi Bohemian Dance Group, Puhoi Public Cemetery, Puhoi Community Forum, Puhoi Centennial Hall Committee, and more. The quantity and quality of her volunteer work is what makes her a worthy recipient of her Queen’s Service Medal, and, hopefully, the Puhoi community will be blessed to enjoy the fruits of her labours for some time yet.

Fostering connections via creative expression

Exploring human connection through painting, photography, and more with Mangawhai's Jess Holdaway - with a focus on social good, Jess's work reflects her belief in the power of human stories to drive positive change.

Tell us about your background and what led you into graphic design.

I grew up in South Africa and lived there for the first 10 years of my life, before immigrating to Aotearoa. I was raised by a fierce and intelligent woman (my mother) and nurtured by an equally intelligent and kind stepfather, along with my siblings and other strong figures in my life. My childhood immersed me in the African bush and all the wonders that came with it.

My journey into visual storytelling began through sketching the bird life found around me. I’ve always been curious - walking in the bush and really looking closely at the shape and form of things and how they behave and relate. I like exploring and using different mediums to express different feelings, concepts or ideas. From painting, clay, pencils, photography, paper; each material tells a different story and holds a different meaning. I was trained in computer graphic design, so it all ends up there eventually, but the path in is through these other mediums.

Working at Smiggle in my early twenties, I began to notice the way images and visual stories made people feel. This led me to study Graphic Design, which subsequently launched my career into the wider world of design. One of my pivotal roles as a Graphic Designer was working for a design studio which focussed on social change and shifting cultural norms in New Zealand. Over time, my visual design skills expanded into a more strategic direction, to include c o-designin g campaigns and stories with different groups of people to achieve positive social change.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am inspired by people and their stories about their own lives and experiences. I love that we make meaning as humans, I think it’s a superpower. This excites me and is an immense responsibility. I believe that the solutions to any given social challenge lie in the lived experience of those who are impacted. My role as a designer is to listen and help these solutions to emerge.

What have you been working on recently?

I've been involved in many projects, each dedicated to promoting social good and reshaping cultural norms. These initiatives encompass a range of topics, including sexual harm and reproductive health, LGBTQIA education, te Tiriti awareness, mental health challenges, combating mis/disinformation, addressing racism, and advocating for disability rights.

I was the lead designer in the re-branding of Youthline, where we c o-designe d how young people would like to be represented and what stories they wanted to tell about their own mental health.

More recently, I was the visual designer and co-author of a project run through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which focussed on the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women in Senegal, Pakistan and Ethiopia.

What do you believe has led to your success so far?

There are lots of good designers out there. In my view a great designer integrates ‘felt experiences’ into their creative expression, aiming to build connections with others in the process. This deeper engagement goes beyond the standard client/designer relationship and results in work that truly honours the audience it is intended for. This is what I aim to do with every project.

My starting point is always ‘what’s possible?’ - my curiosity drives me and I’m deeply passionate about my work.

Textile printingfrom studio to community

Ingrid Anderson has long been printed on the fabric of our national art and textile world. Her work has appeared in some of our most treasured places such as Te Papa and The Auckland Museum.

Ingrid’s prints hark back to the early 2000s when her textile design career began in earnest out of a timber studio on the west coast in Kaipara Flats. Raising three children, she has been a true example of a bootstrapped local business, designing and crafting from her studio, then carting her stall of cushions, tea towels, duvets, peg bags, and many other printed domestic items, to local fairs and galas.

She’s since become one of our most treasured textile designers, with work commissioned by the likes of the Air New Zealand Koru Lounge, where Ingrid handprinted hundreds of tui and retro kiwi prints to welcome visitors home. Her works have also recently been acquired by The Auckland Museum for their online collection, alongside Aotearoa’s most renowned textile designers including Frank Carpay and Avis Higgs, a real compliment given Ingrid’s long-term admiration for t hese designers.

Her prints of hand-sketched pōhutukawa, native fern, horoeka and raupō, are unmistakably informed by our local environment;

iconic in a way that stands free from tokenistic forms which are so often attached to ‘Kiwiana’ design. Ingird’s recent collaboration with Hemptech saw her design an exclusive kawakawa print for their collection. This is now available through reputable interior designers and home furnishing stores throughout Aotearoa.

Ingrid prides herself on using print techniques that are derivative of a past time, where craft was queen and quality integral to environmental stewardship. Her products are hardy and built to last. And as many designers seek cheaper, faster labour alternatives overseas, she has remained loyal to her machinists in the local area and printers in South Auckland. Ingrid believes collaboration with other artisans and local businesses is key to sharing and preserving the integrity of New Zealand Made.

Like many local businesses and creatives, Ingrid has navigated challenging economic times by diversifying her services beyond being a textile designer. With a background as a trained secondary textile teacher, she’s passionate about sharing her skill base and bringing industry practice into the classroom. Expanding her teaching to private workshops run from her studio, tailored to suit various ages and skill levels, has proven very popular. Supported by a 2023 Community Arts Grant, she's been able to host larger classes at local venues, improving accessibility for those in the wi der community.

In her most recent venture, Ingrid has introduced ‘Print Sip and Play’ events, collaborating with local businesses to offer interactive, personalised and fun experiences. These events cater to diverse occasions, including hen's parties, corporate gatherings, and birthdays. Transcending from a shared vision into a vibrant reality, Umi in Matakana is not only a retail store selling beautiful objects, but also a space to gather and connect.

Umi, the newest addition to The Corner on Sharp Road in Matakana, is the collaborative brainchild of kindred spirits, Sophie RandrupIsbey and Georgia Taylor. Bound by a shared zest for the world, their friendship has always revolved around exchanging ideas and images of things they love, brands they admire, recipes they want to cook, places they want to travel to and people they find inspiring. When a vacant space came up at The Corner – next to The Smokehouse, Home Matters and Ravish - the duo seized the opportunity to unite their creative synergy under one roof. And so Umi was born - a

space that not only showcases the pair’s shared passion for design, fashion, and lifestyle, but also brings something unique to the community.

Inspired by the Japanese word for ocean, Umi mirrors the fluid and ever-evolving nature of the sea. The intention behind Umi is to provide a curated selection of products from around the world, emphasising intentionality and uniqueness. “We really want to offer products that set us apart from conventional home stores and which spark conversations and ideas,” s ays Georgia.

“The store, much like the ocean, will be constantly evolving - always fresh a nd intriguing.”

Stepping into Umi, you’ll find a beautifully diverse range of products that resonate with the duo’s commitment to supporting businesses that are creating interesting and unique things - whether they are made locally or sourced internationally. From New Zealand-designed organic cotton dresses made in India to locally crafted perfumes and body oils, ceramics from Morocco, rugs and throws from Mexico and Argentina, and vintage children’s clothing, each item carries a story of intentionality. “Everything we sell in store has been carefully considered,” says Sophie. “If you ask us about any of them, we’ll always have a story to tell you - where it’s been made, who made it and why. We love the idea that you will be taking that intentionality home with you.”

Looking ahead, Sophie and Georgia plan to expand their offerings and collaborate with local artisans. Poised to become so much more than a retail space; Umi will also be a gathering space for like-minded individuals. The duo envisions hosting workshops, showcasing local artists, and fostering a sense of community and connection. As Sophie emphasises, "Umi goes beyond a retail experience. It's a haven where artists and creators shine, and people gather to connect, use their hands, and share th eir passions."

In the hallowed shopping halls of Harrods department store in London, locally-owned pillow brand, Hyoumankind, can now be found gracing its shelves. The journey to this prestigious retail destination began far from the elegant displays and bustling crowds. It started with a simple holiday among friends, where one woman's quest for a restful night's sleep sparked a revolution in pillow design.

Enjoying a morning coffee while away with friends in Fiji, founder Steph Wyborn recounts how the topic turned to the challenges they all faced: restless nights, discomfort from sleeping positions, and the visible effects on their appearance come morning. Ranging from cleavage wrinkles to facial lines, she says “it became clear that sleep posture played a pivotal role in not only how we all felt but how we looked in the morning.”

Inspired by this shared experience Steph was determined to find a solution. After her initial research it became clear that to get what she wanted, the traditional pillow design needed a rethink. She found herself reading everything she could on how wrinkles form and how our posture affects our sleep, before setting out to create her own pillow.

The development was very rudimentary in the beginning, “it all started at my kitchen bench with a bread knife, I just carved a pillow up to see what might work.” Eventually she found a New Zealand based memory foam provider that could help bring her prototypes to life. It took 16 prototypes to get the Go Pillow where it is today – a pillow not only designed for every night sleep, but small enough that it can be taken on the go. Modernism on the fairway

Some sites are blessed with an unbeatable backdrop and this particular site, located just minutes from Tara Iti Golf Club in Mangawhai, is one such place.

Presented with a rolling section amidst waving grasses where the land meets the sea, and views stretched to the Hen and Chickens Islands, was like securing a hole in one for Tony Borland-Lye, design manager at Box™. When he was asked to conceptualise a holiday escape, he knew he had to pull a birdie out of the bag!

The owner came armed with an inspiration sheet of modernist images, including his own home in Auckland – a mid-century gem by Czechoslovakian émigré architect, Vladimir Cacala. Modernist influences aside, designing

for context was paramount. “We devised a horizontal form anchored to the ground at just one point, rather than a two-storeyed monolith that obliterated the outlook,” says Tony. When the client was presented with a computerised depiction of the way the walls peeled back to give the home a close relationship to the land, his verdict was: the perfect approach shot.

A lightweight pavilion is held like an object on display atop a concrete-block plinth. On approach, an aperture through the plinth gives a clear view of the ocean. The

28-metre-long home is set into a natural depression on the section and its cantilevered upper level is an elegant expression of engineering that appears to float in space. For the materials, Tony turned to the vernacular of rural buildings. Vertical cedar clads the form and softens its horizontal lines; on the southern elevation, a ‘connector’ that runs above the carport is an industrial zinc tray. Closed-in soffits tidy up the structure on the underside and black aluminium joinery is recessive so as not to interrupt the sli mline geometry.

A suspended open-tread stair leads to the entrance where a pale palette leaves the landscape as a celebration. With three bedrooms and a large open-plan living and dining area, the layout is efficient within the rectangular footprint. Oak flooring, white walls and whitened oak cabinetry contrast the dark tones of the exterior, while builtin timber room dividers, storage cabinets, headboards and bedside tables hark back to the modernist mood.

These spaces come alive with dappled light cast through timber fins on the west-facing elevation. “There is a sense of dynamism as the changing light provides a visual treat,” says Tony.

Decking that wraps two sides of the building is set within its outline. “We took a bite out of the form to craft outdoor areas without altering the proportions of the structure and roof.” A porthole skylight to the west provides a spherical slice of sky.

With the relaxed feel of a holiday home but also a level of formality to fit seamlessly alongside existing buildings in the development, this project is recognisably the Box™ aesthetic –only amplified. “It incorporates features from many homes in our portfolio but dials up the architecture a notch,” says Tony.

Art & Alchemy - a glass exhibition

Artform Gallery in Matakana hosts an exciting new exhibition entitled ‘Art & Alchemy’, featuring the works of five local artists: Christine Cathie, Elizabeth McClure, Vicki Fanning, Kim Logue, and Kathryn Bartlett.

The two-week glass art exhibition, running from 30 March to 12 Apr il, will showcase a variety of works from these skilled artists, each of which bring to the exhibition a unique perspective, highlighting a variety of glassmaking techniques and approaches.

Christine Cathie

Christine’s works exploit the translucent nature of glass by working with light and shade, building smooth graceful forms with slender curves - letting the light glide in. Her sculptures have been exhibited throughout the world and she has won numerous awards. Christine’s work is included in the collections of Te Papa Tongarewa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs New Zealand, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark, and corporate and private collections both nationally and internationally.

Kim Logue

Kim relocated to the family farm in Tomarata after completing her Bachelor of Applied Arts in 2012. This rural home imbues her work with conversations about family history, geology, and conservation. Her artistic practice uses traditional ‘Lost Wax’ methods to cast recycled glass, as well as creating innovative techniques to cast obsidian pieces. Kim’s artwork features in national and international collections, and she has been recognised in prominent overseas ar ts awards.

Elizabeth McClure

Scottish-born Elizabeth has an international reputation as an accomplished artist and educator. She now resides locally with a workshop in Matakana, although she has lived, worked and taught in many countries, and exhibited worldwide in solo and group exhibitions. Her glass ranges from large scale architectural commissions, through to object making (primarily glassblowing), and intimate jewellery pieces. Her work is design driven with an exquisite colour palette.

Vicki Fanning

Vicki’s work echoes glass’s ability to hold and deliver a message. Historically, this was primarily through church windows, but in the modern digital era glass has a multitude of uses in the spread of information and imagery. Vicki has exhibited numerous times in New Zealand and overseas. She has works in public collections at Sarjeant Gallery and Auckland Museum, and many private collections. Works in this show were made as part of her 2023 Residency at New Zealand Glassworks.

Kathryn Bartlett

Kathryn divides her time between studios in Omaha and Auckland. Her cast glass pieces often have an emotive quality, inspired by the artist’s memories, experiences, and observations. Kathryn was a recent finalist at the R.T Nelson Sculpture Awards, the Waikato Small Sculpture Awards, and New Zealand Sculpture OnShore. She has also been a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Awards, and a recipient of the Sue Robertson Award for Empathy.

Gardening calendar

Preparation is the key for this time of year as we once again say goodbye to the long days of summer. It’s time to get winter brassica crops on the go, together with beetroot, greens, onions, carrots and celery. Garlic can be established from March onwards although the traditional planting time is more towards late May. Bear in mind that soil temperatures are still good, but moisture levels could be low. Keep newly sown and establishing crops watered to get them growing strongly.

Happy together - carrots and onions

A freshly pulled carrot with its crunch and sweetness is nothing but divine. Although a freshly harvested red or white onion sliced into salad or eaten with a good piece of cheese is undoubtedly its equal. As well as both winning taste tests these two vegetables grow very well together. Neither of them are the easiest of plants to grow so use all the tricks in the book to bring them to their best.

If you are thinking of planting carrots and onions this autumn consider planting them alongside each other. Carrots and onions are well known companion crops. They will happily share a garden bed with mutual benefit. A bane of carrot crops is the low flying carrot fly. A row of onions alongside carrots helps repel carrot fly by forming a physical barrier. Onions also repel carrot fly and other insects with their strong scent. Both onions and carrots need good sunlight exposure. Luckily, they grow to similar heights and will not shade each other out. Soil wise, both carrots and onions like a free draining soil with good potassium and phosphorus levels. Onions like more nitrogen than carrots so may benefit with a side dressing of matured compost as they grow. They both need weeding as they establish too! Nurse them past the early growth stages and they are both easy care.

To establish carrots direct sow seed into a weed free bed that is loose and friable. Make sure you use fresh seed as carrot seed loses viability quickly. If your garden is weedy consider making a shallow trench and filling it with a thin layer of weed free compost, sand or rotted sawdust. Sow the carrot seeds 5mm deep and cover with more weed free material. Keep the germinating seed moist until the plants put their roots down. Onions are better established by transplanting individual seedlings into your garden bed. Space plants 5 to 10 cm apart. Onions take longer to mature so plant them once the carrots are established. Figs

Easy to grow, and at home on a range of soils or in a pot, a fig tree is a fruit tree perfect for a home garden. Figs do not like waterlogged soils so take care when siting. Ironically their roots will grow towards a water source like a drain so keep that in mind too. Figs are self fertile. One tree is all you need, but if you have room then plant several varieties to spread the harvest. Popular varieties include Candy (green outside with red flesh), Mission and Brunoro Black, (deep purplish black outside with dark red flesh) and Brown Turkey (brown outside with light brown flesh). They are ready to harvest when they soften to touch and the skin changes colour. Cut them from the tree with secateurs. Beware around harvest time though as birds love them and generally are up earlier in the morning than you are.

Plant figs in autumn through winter. They are very easy to grow from cuttings. Take hardwood cuttings about finger thickness in winter when the tree is dormant. Dip the cutting in rooting hormone and place in a pot or tray in a mix of pumice and potting mix. Put the cuttings in a warm place and keep the mix damp. When good roots form, transplant into a small pot to grow them to a good size before planting.

Fig Jam Recipe

A delicious and rewarding process, enjoy your homemade fig jam on toast, crackers, or as a condiment for cheese.

INGREDIENTS:

• 450 grams fresh figs, stemmed and chopped

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Wash and remove the stems from the figs. Cut them into s mall pieces.

• In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the chopped figs, sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest (if using). Stir well to mix t he ingredients.

• Let the mixture sit for about 15-20 minutes to allow the sugar to dissolve and the fruit to release its juices.

• Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.

• Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer. Continue simmering for 30-40 minutes, or until the jam thickens. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

• Check the consistency of the jam by placing a small amount on a chilled plate. If it wrinkles when you push it with your finger, i t's ready.

• Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the jam cool for a few minutes.

• Pour the hot jam into clean, sterilised jars, leaving about 1/4 inch headspace. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth to ensure a proper seal.

• Seal the jars with lids and rings, and then process them in a hot water bath for about 10 minutes to sterilise and ensure a longer shelf life.

• Allow the jars to cool completely before storing them in a cool, dark place. Once opened, store the jam in the refrigerator.

Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Big Omaha, Adam Lane's journey from motorcycle repair and restoration to bespoke coffee roasting reflects his entrepreneurial resilience.

Rooted in a commitment to community and quality, Big Omaha Coffee Roasters aims to offer a delightful coffee experience and enhance the local coffee culture.

Adam, not actively seeking a new venture, found himself at a crossroads with his motorcycle business, Moto Benzina, that he runs with business partner Tim. The constant rain and political climate at the time took a toll on small businesses, especially where toys were involved! Adam took a strategic pause along with his wife and embraced a change of scenery with the purchase of a 3.5-acre property in Big Omaha. With hobby farming never on the agenda, the vast, empty paddock proved to be the ideal canvas for a new project, and a new home for Moto Benzina. But this was just the beginning of his journey.

With the Moto Benzina project up and running, Adam’s 11 years of experience roasting coffee invited repeated suggestions from local acquaintances and family friends

to venture back into the business, eventually proving too much for Adam to ignore. The turning point came when a friend unearthed a vintage 15kg Turkish coffee roaster in need of restoration. Adam seized the opportunity, and with the roaster restored to its former commercial standard glory, a new shed, and the support of skilled friends, B ig Omaha Coffee Roas ters came to life.

Adam's passion for roasting is clear as he meticulously crafts individual batches, offering a diverse range of single-origin and blended beans, freshly roasted packed in his home-based headquarters. “I’m just roasting coffee for the people really, I love it,” he says. The roastery has become a hub where patrons engage in conversations about their dream coffee flavours, origins, and past experiences; which Adam aims to

The untold story of the feijoa

Nature writer, Kate Evans, transforms her unwavering obsession and nostalgic yearning for feijoa into a captivating narrative with her first book, FEIJOA: A Story of Obsession and Belonging –published by Moa Press with a release date of March 2024.

Every autumn, after the Mahurangi College school bus dropped her at the end of the gravel road, K ate Evan s would walk home and, casting off her schoolbag, make straight for the feijoa tree by the gate. On those shortening April afternoons, the fragrant fruit would litter the ground in abundance. Kate and her sisters would cut them in half and spoon the gelatinous insides into their mouths – or just bite straight into them, the juice running down their chins. For Kate, it was the start of a feijoa obsession that would take her around the world and turn her into an author.

Kate spent her entire childhood in Leigh, then 12 years living overseas – Italy, Australia, Argentina and Indonesia. If she happened to find a feijoa, even at $3 each, she’d happily pay the price for the homesick hit of sweet nostalgia it provided. When she returned with her Australian partner to New Zealand at the start of 2014, she couldn’t wait for her first full feijoa season in years.

When it arrived – when the feijoas started falling and falling, and people gave them away at work and on the side of the road –she started wondering. Why are New Zealanders so attached to feijoas? How have they become a kind of ‘national fruit’ for us, when they come from Uruguay and Brazil? Who were the first feijoa-eaters, thousands of years ago, and what might the plant have meant to them? How did it get its unusual name? The questions led to more questions, and finding the answers took a decade of research, writing a nd travel.

In her book, FEIJOA: A Story of Obsession and Belonging, she traces the feijoa’s journey from South America to the South Pacific, via the French Riviera and California. In France, she discovers the lost garden of Edouard André, the landscape architect who first brought the feijoa to Europe. In Colombia, she is a guest of honour at the annual Festival of the Feijoa in the tiny Andean town of Tibasosa. She joins homesick Kiwi expats at a feijoa farm in Queensland, Australia. In New Zealand, she looks for feijoas in the heart of Te Urewera with Tūhoe chef Joe McLeod, and tastes the feijoas of the future at the Takaka home of enigmatic breeder Nigel Ritson.

Kate now lives in Raglan with her partner Sam and their two daughters, next door to Kate’s sister Monica and her family. The feijoas they all planted there still symbolise home – but now also the myriad stories and invisible threads connecting this special plant to fellow feijoa obsessives, distant in space and time.

Hosted by the Mangawhai Domain Society and organised by the MM&C Car Club admin team, this fundraiser event is a strong attraction for car enthusiasts. Possibly the only car show on Easter weekend the event is set to attract participants from all over the North Island.

With hundreds of classic and muscle cars, live music, food trucks, market stalls, a fashion Show and rides for the kids, it is an excursion for all to enjoy. Introducing JADA Music Festival presented by Puhoi Pub; with live music proving so popular at this iconic pub they are putting on their first music festival. The line-up includes one solo act and four top bands with the first kicking off at 2.30pm. Gates open at 1.30pm for ticket holders but don’t miss the free opening act, Mark Taipari with an INXS tribute, starting at 11.45am.

Puhoi Pub kitchen will be open and a bus will run from Hibiscus Coast Station, Silverdale for a small additional fee with ticket purchase. This is an R18 event and tickets are available now from Puhoi Pub and Event Finda.

Trish Allen and Guenther Andraschko are running their annual Permaculture Design Course (PDC) and practical workshops in Matakana again in 2024. This modular PDC takes place over seven months with 12 full days of course time.
