A flexible approach Growing up as a sponsored surfer in the United Kingdom, Matt Burner has used a wide range of surf products. He’s come full circle and is now supporting aspiring pro surfers in New Zealand with wetsuits from his start-up, Flex Wetsuits. Wo rd s L u ke Wi l l i a m s o n

Based in Waipu, Matt is using his knowledge gained from years of surfing to produce a seriously good wetsuit range. “From the age of seven, all the way up until about 22, I was a semi-professional surfer. I’ve been doing R&D for a long time,” he laughs. “In my early to mid 20’s, I trained as a carpenter and that meant I couldn’t put as much time into my surfing. Starting this company is about following my passion for the ocean and surfing,” says Matt. Anyone who buys wetsuits will know there is a plethora of brands to choose from. So what sets Flex Wetsuits apart from the rest? “It’s literally in the name – the flexibility of our suits, I think, is second to none. I’m using

Yamamoto limestone neoprene, and I've gone above and beyond to make sure my seams are as good as they can be. They’re glued, taped and blind stitched so that’s three layers of protection. The feedback I’m getting from my team riders is that they're top end.” Matt is leading out with a summer steamer that will be suitable for all-year use in the north. That will be followed by a short-arm steamer, and then more options to follow in 2024. He’s also going to introduce a colour range that will span traditional black to brighter earthy tones. ‘We’re going to have some quite colourful suits,” says Matt with a smile. “The prices will be mid-range, but the suits are high end so great value for money.”

Flex wetsuits are available for sale on the Flex website and their social media is up and running on Instagram. “I have to thank LH Media for all the help on that,” says Matt. Aside from selling online, Matt is working hard on getting Flex Wetsuits stocked in surf shops, particularly in his home territory around Northland. And, while he’s starting small, his sights are most definitely set on becoming a global brand. “I'd love to think I can achieve that,” says Matt. “I've spent a lot of time on my research and how to start a business. I’m going to start small and see where it takes me.” While sustainability and being eco-friendly are a challenge for any wetsuit company, it’s

something Matt is passionate about when it comes to his business. “Natural neoprene uses petroleum substances, which are very harmful, whereas limestone neoprene is less harmful and lasts a lot longer,” he explains of his chosen fabric. “So, rather than wearing out a suit every year, a Flex wetsuit should last longer.” All Flex products will be shipped using ecofriendly packaging and Matt is doing his best to make sure the suits arrive from the manufacturer with zero plastic packaging. Matt’s five-year plan is to be making Flex suits in New Zealand which will significantly reduce the business's carbon footprint. A wetsuit recycling scheme is also in the pipeline. When you next need to purchase a wetsuit, consider Flex, not just for the excellent functionality and value of the suits, but also for the reduced impact on the environment. www.FlexWetsuits.com www.instagram.com/FlexWetsuits

Above and beyond Simon Owen Helicopter pilot, Simon Owen, on his work with the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopters, where each flight can be the difference between life and death. Wo rd s R e b e c k a Ke e l i n g P h o t o s Au c k l a n d R e s c u e H e l i c o p t e r Tr u s t

Matakana local, Simon, used to be a builder, before realising his dream of becoming a helicopter pilot. A path that led him to the challenging yet rewarding world of rescue missions. His journey took him from his hometown of Wellington to the Northern Territory in Australia, where he worked on land management with rangers, engaging in feral animal control, controlled burning, and firefighting. Seven years ago, Simon came across an opportunity with the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopters and jumped at the opportunity of moving back to New Zealand - starting as a co-pilot before rising through the ranks to the captain's position. A typical day in Simon's life is far from ordinary. Working four days on and four

days off, Simon and his crew prepare for an average of three missions a day. These missions range from medical emergencies, like heart attacks, to trauma cases such as motor vehicle accidents, to search and rescue operations. "This weekend we did three winch jobs," he says. "One woman in the Woodhill Forest fell off her horse and needed to be lifted out, the second was a guy who fell off the rocks in Tiritiri Matangi, and the third was three sailors who sent a mayday call as their yacht was sinking 100km offshore. Luckily we got there in time to winch all three of them out of the water." Apart from the pilot, the helicopter crew consists of a critical care paramedic who is also a rescue swimmer, an aircrew officer,

and a doctor. Simon describes teamwork as the backbone of their operations. "We're all bringing our own specific sets of skills, so bringing that together is really rewarding." As a father of two young boys, Hugo and Enzo, one of the toughest aspects of Simon's job is the emotional challenge of dealing with sick or injured children. "Luckily we don't go to that many kids, but when we do it pulls at my heartstrings," he says. "Whatever you can relate to is the hardest." The rescue of a young man in Kaipara was a memorable one that underscores the importance of the helicopter rescue work. "His foot had become stuck in machinery and his whole leg was cut off just above the knee," says Simon. "He managed to put a tourniquet on himself and call for help."

The young man not only survived but went on to become a professional paracanoeist, representing New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games. "He came into the base to visit this year - it was really great to see him." Simon pilots a Leonardo AW169, a 15 million dollar technologically advanced machine well-suited for rescue missions. Its capabilities include a 300-foot winch, two turbine engines, and the ability to operate in adverse weather conditions, meaning it’s IFR capable. Thanks to the fundraising of the Rodney Health Charitable Trust, there are several IFR approaches in the area, including at Omaha and Warkworth. "These are basically like a highway in the sky, meaning we can get there and land even in poor weather," says Simon. Simon also highlights the support they receive from local emergency services, particularly the volunteer fire brigades, in setting up landing zones during rescues. For those wanting to follow in Simon's footsteps, he says the right attitude, determination, and persistence are key. "Because it's a hard industry to get into," says Simon. Staying calm under pressure, being a team player, and making sensible decisions are other necessary qualities in this field of work. "I was never the smartest kid in school, I just kept on going." www.RescueHelicopter.org.nz

Mangawhai Heads Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service has been providing a patrolled beach environment since 1963. The surf club has played an essential part in the local area, delivering proactive lifeguarding and essential emergency rescue services. 55 volunteer lifeguards will be patrolling this season during weekends and public holidays until Easter Monday. Regional lifeguards patrol weekdays from 18 December to 9 February. The Search and Rescue Squad is a skilled group of lifeguards who provide support to local emergency services. The clubhouse was issued with a Dangerous Building Notice after being damaged earlier this year. Temporary portacoms have been set up this summer so the club can continue to provide a service. They are hoping to release a club update as soon as possible. The Junior Surf program started on 29 October with 164 children ready to extend their water safety knowledge in a safe environment. The Junior Surf squad participates in many local events showcasing their skills.

Waipu Cove Since 1928 the primary focus of Waipū Cove Surf Life Saving Club has been keeping the community safe in the water. But patrolling the beach, managing hazards and preventing people from getting into trouble is only the beginning of what the club offers. Nicknamed "Nippers" the Junior Surf program is run throughout the summer months in a safe, fun, organised and welcoming environment. Assisting children's confidence, knowledge, and skills on how to be safe around the water and at the beach, it also develops skills towards becoming future surf lifeguards and introduces the many Surf Sport options the club also offers. Teenagers can join the Rookie Surf Lifeguard program before qualifying as a Surf Lifeguard as young as 14 years of age. Rookies can start patrolling alongside Surf Lifeguards, and start developing more advanced skills such as CPR, first aid and radio communications. Waipū Cove SLSC also has a 24/7 Volunteer Search and Rescue Squad who respond to emergencies outside of patrolling hours. Made up of Senior Surf Lifeguards who live nearby, the squad work together with other emergency services. Priding itself on community involvement and education, Waipū Cove SLSC has strong connections with its members, maintains a supportive family environment and provides opportunities for upskilling and team building. From Rookie Camp to Youth Development Camp, Senior Leadership experiences, Flood Swift water training, first aid courses, coaching and instructing - a thriving club environment is created. Anyone keen to get involved or support the club by becoming a sponsor or associate member is encouraged to register. www.WaipuCoveSLSC.org.nz

Understanding Relationship Property. C RA F T ED L EGAL ADVICE FOR PEACE OF M IN D.

The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. Income, property, Kiwisaver, intermingled inheritances and gifts from third parties are all considered relationship property when in a de facto relationship — unless both parties have entered into a Contracting Out Agreement. Without one, relationship property would be shared equally upon separation, or even the death of one party, regardless of what anyone’s will said. Know when your relationship is considered a de facto relationship under New Zealand legislation and protect your assets with a Contracting Out Agreement. Preserving nature's trails Nestled among native forests and winding landscapes in Mangawhai, a group of dedicated volunteers known as the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust, affectionately dubbed the 'trackies,' is quietly making a significant impact on the community. Wo rd s R e b e c k a Ke e l i n g

Chair, Gordon Hosking, says the trackies originated 12 years ago from the Mangawhai Walking Weekend, an annual event that draws around 600 participants. Since then it’s grown organically through the community's passion for walking and preserving the natural beauty surrounding Mangawhai. The primary objectives of the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust are clear: the maintenance and development of tracks. "We also collaborate with other nearby groups, and are looking to expand into mountain bike tracks as well," says Gordon, a retired forester

with a lifetime of experience in navigating New Zealand's native forests.

these tracks back into shape for the summer, which is the busiest time."

Currently, the trackies are working on the restoration of the Back Bay Boardwalk. This 500-metre long boardwalk, nestled among mangroves, suffered severe damage in the recent storm. With the help of engineers, they are working on a strategy to repair and futureproof this beloved pathway.

Creating new walking tracks is a physical as well as a social event. "Every Friday morning, a dozen volunteers gather to build tracks using spades, grubbers, and hand saws," says Gordon. He emphasises the environmental considerations involved, particularly when dealing with kauri trees, ensuring adherence to DOC standards to protect the local giants.

"We're also doing a lot of repair work in the Brynderwyn Hills at the moment," says Gordon. "There's mainly water damage and trees that have fallen down. We're keen to get

require regular upkeep, drainage systems are installed to prevent damage from streams, and crushed rock is laid on muddy stretches. Weed control, with a focus on combating the invasive asparagus fern, plays a crucial role in keeping the tracks pristine. Gordon's personal favourite is the Botanical Track. Part of the Tanekaha complex, the track is easy to walk - it meanders through native bush and past waterfalls, providing a picturesque three-hour experience.

For walkers seeking hidden gems closer to home, Gordon recommends two tracks in Mangawhai Park, Paul's Track and the Last of the Summer Wine Track, both of which offer a gentle 45-minute stroll. The Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust embodies the spirit of community-led conservation, ensuring that the trails we traverse today will be enjoyed by generations to come. www.MangawhaiTracks.com TracksInMangawhai@gmail.com

Low impact, high comfort Sustainable stays with a small footprint and ways you can reduce your environmental impact when travelling; brought to you by Sustainable Kaipara. Wo rd s S a ra h Bray

Think back to your last stay at a hotel or resort - the high turnover of linen, the plastic waste and energy consumption. The accommodation industry can have a hefty environmental impact. For most, choosing accommodation starts with a wishlist including things like location, amenities and weighting against costs. By adding sustainability to the wishlist we can play a part in cultivating a more sustainable accommodation industry. Many of us are now aware of the wastefulness in the accommodation industry and we’ve seen an increase in ‘sustainable’ accommodation options. But how do we know if it’s greenwashing or actually part of the living, breathing values that underpin the business? An easy way is to look out for sustainability standards or certifications. Some common certifications include the Qualmark rating, BCorp, NZ Tourism Sustainability Commitment, LEED, Green Globe, and Earthcheck. Remember though, small businesses often can’t afford certifications so take a look at their website to see what practical steps an accommodation provider is taking to reduce their environmental impact. Locally, I have experienced the efforts made by Aotearoa Surf, limiting their impact on the earth with their ‘eco-pods’ and glamping offerings. They’re regenerating the land, minimising waste through on site food scrap composting, recycling, and actively educating guests about preventing plastic pollution and taking reusables when shopping in Mangawhai. www.AotearoaSurf.co.nz

Further afield in the Pacific, Vanuatu’s Nakatumble Farm have embedded sustainability into their core values. With local food production, handcrafted locally sourced furniture and fittings, and solar power, no stone has been left unturned. In fact, even the stepping stone pavers were gradually made with excess concrete during construction. Solid waste from their pigs is collected daily, and fed to the biogas system which is used for cooking and additional power generation. Rainwater is filtered onsite, with guests provided with either still or sparkling water (which is carbonated onsite) to remove the need for bottled water. www.Nakatumble.com

Once you’ve chosen your accommodation don’t stop there! Think about how you pack - ensure you have your reusable water bottle, coffee cup, cutlery kit and toiletries to avoid buying more while you’re away. Lastly, if you find somewhere doing great things, tell people, share the sustainability elements to help give that business a boost - supporting these businesses lets them know investing in sustainability has an impact on their customer base. www.SustainableKaipara.org | Sarah@SustainableKaipara.org

Buffalo migrate north Accomplished brand agency, Buffalo & Co, is a new addition to the Warkworth/Matakana business community having recently made a seachange from their former city-based offices. They are now embracing the lifestyle and business opportunities on offer north of the bridge. Creative Director, Jared Trice (L) and Owner/Director, Tim Barry (R)

They’ve been the creative brains behind clever design and advertising campaigns since opening their doors in 2007. From local business websites to big corporate brand campaigns, they do it all. With a growing market from Albany to the North, the agency is already supporting the ambitions of locals in the area. The Buffalo team know there are some great businesses with huge potential in the region and are keen to help more locals amplify their presence with support across branding, design, digital, advertising and marketing. Director and Owner, Tim Barry, says Warkworth village, where you’ll find the Buffalo & Co office, is a welcome change from the constantly chaotic central city. And for Tim personally, it’s also been the chance for his family to enjoy the pace and space of their new community. With roots now set, Buffalo is looking to grow their herd, and are seeking a local experienced finance/administration person to join them in the New Year. Visit their website to find out more about what they do or submit your interest by emailing them.

Open throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Ric’s is renowned for its exceptional wood-fired pizzas, though the beef and chicken burgers also deserve a mention. For a more elevated dining experience, the tuna tartare, wild mushroom risotto and chimichurri lamb leg are must-haves. If you’re golfing on the North Course at Te Arai Links, the Halfway House offers a convenient place to stop with a takeaway menu featuring fish tacos, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and chicken wraps – all ideally accompanied with a cold Sawmill pilsner or refreshing margarita. In October 2023, the 'Ocean Restaurant' opened, a fine dining restaurant aptly named for its breathtaking vistas of the ocean and the 18th fairway on the South Course, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor dining spaces. Ric’s welcomes guests 7 days a week, but securing a reservation is essential. 11 Te Ara Whenua Miharo Kotiti, Tomarata | www.TeArai.com

With its diverse range of recipes, Collectively Homegrown is destined to secure a place on kitchen shelves throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand. This cookbook embraces sustainability, Te Reo Māori, diversity and inclusivity, and supports local communities through each sale made, with its support of Women's Refuge New Zealand. It promotes ethical production and distribution, and advocates for New Zealand-made products and local support. It's a testament to the interconnectedness of these values, ensuring that every dish is not only irresistibly tasty, but also mindful! Behind this unique cookbook is Elke and Nadia, a Mother and Daughter duo who together own the social enterprise Husk and Honey. Recently the duo opened a physical space in Waipu, called the Cove Collective - a shared space showcasing curated pieces from both New Zealand and Global makers, with a focus on Women Made, Ethically Sourced and Environmentally friendly products. With a shared love of cooking, Nadia and Elke have contemplated the idea of writing a cookbook for some time, and before long, the concept for Collectively Homegrown was born. Inspired by the work done by the Women's Refuge New Zealand and saddened by the statistics around family violence, they decided to donate 100% of profits made from the sales of the book to the charity. Nadia and Elke are thrilled to have created a book that New Zealanders can purchase, enjoy, and share, whilst also giving back and supporting the undeniably important work the refuge is doing in Aotearoa. Collectively Homegrown has been a passion project that Elke and Nadia have spent the last 18 months working hard on, collecting recipes, trialling them in the test kitchen and carefully putting together a treasure trove of a cookbook; available to purchase now in store and online! www.HuskAndHoney.co.nz | www.instagram.com/HuskAndHoneyNZ

Gardening calendar January is a time when your garden will be happy to give you lots of fresh produce to share around and ask very little in return. Give plants a deep watering in the early mornings or cooler evening periods. Squash bugs, tie up tall plants like tomatoes and prune off the lower branches. Keep up regular picking of beans and keep an eye on those zucchinis as they will happily turn into marrows if left unharvested. Wo rd s G e of f L e d b r o o k

Plant

Plants for odd spaces One or two of these quirky plants are enough to add some diversity to your garden table. Often you can poke these plants in a spare corner of the vege garden or patch of ground near the house. A big pot will work just as well. Here are a few candidates:

Cape Gooseberry – this is an easy to grow sprawling bushy plant that will grow to around a

metre high. Cape Gooseberry originates from South America. It is related to tomatoes with small golden ball-like fruits encased in a papery husk. This fruit is ripe when golden in colour and the husk turns brown. It will give you an intense tart flavour and can be eaten fresh, used in salsas or made into a range of preserves. Cape Gooseberries are a good source of vitamins A, C and B. They are high in protein and iron and have good pectin levels too, making them great for setting jam.

Pepino – yet another gift from the South American continent, the pepino is also part of the

The fruit is egg shaped, cream or purple coloured and has violet stripes. When ripe the fruit has a sweet melon-like flavour that can be eaten directly from the plant or added to salads. The fruit is very good for you, being high in antioxidants, Vitamin C and fibre.

green with a different flavour profile. Tomatillos are a wonderful accompaniment to Mexican food. The tomatillo has a zingy, slightly sweet, lime-like flavour. Harvest when the husks split, revealing the green fruits. Tomatillos are not self-fertile and two or more plants are needed to produce fruit.

Fenugreek - a nitrogen fixing herb that will fit in well in a summer garden. Part of the pea and

bean family, it is a good plant to attract bees and beneficial insects into the garden. Maybe more well-known for its spicy seeds, its foliage is edible and can be used as a green vegetable. The seeds work well for sprouting as well. Fenugreek is a bushy plant that will grow to around 60cm high. Plant seedlings from spring to early summer in moderately fertile soil. Harvest the green leaves progressively and the seeds from mid autumn. Use the plant biomass for compost and leave the root system to break down in the soil.

Elotes - Mexican street corn two ways Cooked in many ways and called by different names, corn is ever present on the family table, in restaurants and on street food menus in Mexico. These two recipes are the most popular all around the country, eaten as an evening snack or at fairs and celebrations. Quick to whip up and a great side dish for your weekend BBQ. Add a margarita and you’re all set to enjoy the Mexican summer vibes without leaving your deck! Recipes by Sofía Gallardo | www.TheSHDLife.com

Creamy Corn Serves 4

Sweetcorn Sweetcorn is a great crop for beginners with big seeds you can sow direct to your garden. You will need space in your garden though as it needs to grow in a block of plants to get adequate pollination for formation of big juicy cobs. Wind is the main pollinator moving pollen from the male flower heads to the female silks at the end of the developing cob. Pick a sunny spot with nitrogen rich fertile soil. Corn grows rapidly and tall so it needs plenty of fuel. Before sowing, prepare your corn patch with compost, rotted manures or blood and bone. It also needs regular watering, particularly in the last half of its growth cycle. Sow seeds 10mm deep and 15 to 20cm apart. Good quality New Zealand grown seed is available and is often untreated, avoiding chemicals entering garden soil. Depending on the variety, cobs are ready to harvest from 80 to 110 days from germination. New Zealand grown varieties to look for are Silver Platinum, Super Sweet NZ Yellow, Glass Gem, Bicolour F1 and Golden Sweet F1. Planting your own corn may not save you money but it does give divinely fresh sweet cobs picked the day you eat them. As a bonus you get a great carbon crop for the compost heap once the harvest is over.

INGREDIENTS: •

4 corn on the cob (previously cooked in salted water until soft)

1 cup finely grated Parmesan or Grana Padano cheese

• • • •

1/4 cup good quality mayonnaise 1/2 a lime

Salt to taste

1T Spanish smoked pimentón (paprika)

INSTRUCTIONS: While corn is still warm rub with the lime, squeezing it gently as you go to get a bit of the flavour everywhere. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Using a brush or a butter knife spread a thin layer of mayonnaise over the corn making sure to completely cover it. Add a pinch of smoked pimentón to taste. Enjoy!

Spicy Corn Serves 4 INGREDIENTS: •

4 corn on the cob, grilled

Pinch of salt

• •

1 juicy lime

Chili powder or Tajín (Mexican lime, chilli and salt powder mix) to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: Take the cooked corn straight from the grill or barbecue to a platter, rub with the lime, adding a layer of juice all over. Sprinkle with salt and chilli powder to taste. Serve warm. Tip: Leave some leaves attached to the end stem as something to hold on to while eating or stick a long wooden skewer into the bottom of the corn to make it easier to hold.

Where tropical paradise dreams come to life Are you yearning for fragrant summer evenings, dappled shade, and the feeling of a tropical island oasis? Let Matakana Frangipani transport you to your happy place: a world of vibrant colours and intoxicating fragrances right at home in your backyard. Wo rd s R a c h e l E l l i s ( Wo rd R i g h t )

A tree that is easy to grow and maintain and that produces gorgeous flowers with an amazing bouquet; who can say no? Well, not Tom and Sandra. The Matakana Frangipani team started growing frangipani plants from cuttings gifted by family and friends around 10 years ago. Friends loved the frangipanis as much as they did, so they grew more. Some of these plants now stand at around 1.8 metres in height. As well as growing in height, the number of trees also grew considerably, so now they have frangipani plants ready to sell. What sets Matakana Frangipani apart from the large chain store nurseries is not just the affordable prices, but the exceptional quality of the plants. Each frangipani on offer is robust, resilient, and guaranteed to bloom in vibrant, fragrant glory. The plants are nurtured in their tunnel house. Grown with meticulous care, these beauties have grown more quickly and are stronger and taller than outdoor plants of an equivalent age. They are approximately one

and a half to twice the size and have a wider trunk, so they have a fantastic start, making them easily transplantable. Matakana Frangipani’s plants also have at least three branches and many are splitting into more. Why is the number of branches important? Because more branches mean more flowers. Frangipani flowers grow in clusters like bouquets on branch tips from early summer through autumn. These frangipani plants are propagated by rooting cuttings. As they have the exact DNA as the parent plant, they are guaranteed to produce the same flower, which is left to chance if grown from seed. Growing from a cutting also produces flowers at a considerably quicker pace than if grown from a seed. Frangipani care is easy as long as you can meet its needs for warm sunshine. Plant in a north-facing area, and do not water too much - one drink a week over summer is enough - and you’ll enjoy this spectacular tropical plant in your home for many years.

Frangipani plants thrive with minimal care. The beautiful flowers, set against exotic, large green leaves will add a touch of tropical splendour. Group them with palms, sun-loving ferns, bananas, hibiscus, bromeliads, yucca, and other tropical beauties for outstanding combinations of shape, colour, and texture. Grown in tubs, frangipanis make colourful poolside specimens and are ideal for hot, sunny balconies or decks. With over 30 years of experience in horticulture, Tom knows his stuff regarding plants. The trees they have for sale are all top quality and guaranteed to delight when in the right conditions. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or someone who enjoys the beauty of nature, their frangipani plants will be a delight. Make an appointment to see the frangipani collection in person or view the range online. www.MatakanaFrangipani.nz info@MatakanaFrangipani.nz

To ensure that every room enjoys a slice of the spectacular scenery, the layout was meticulously designed. Bedrooms and living areas grace the northern face, soaking up natural light and providing panoramic vistas. Conversely, service spaces like bathrooms, garages, and laundry facilities find their place on the southern side, creating a harmonious balance between practicality and delight. The roof design serves a dual purpose as it forms a welcoming sheltered entry, setting the tone for an extraordinary experience. Upon crossing the threshold, visitors immediately connect with the expansive views from Mangawhai Heads and Te Arai to the Brynderwyns in the west. Exposed beams and soaring ceilings infuse drama and interest to the interior, accentuating the sloping ceiling. Large sliders and strategically placed top lights follow the slope and maximise the views, seamlessly bringing the outdoors in and evoking a holiday at home ambience. The kitchen island serves as a versatile centrepiece, free from fixtures to allow for use as a servery and casual dining spot. A cleverly positioned window at bench height

on the back wall welcomes the early morning sun creating a delightfully bright atmosphere to start the day. The butler's pantry adds functionality with ample storage and extra worktop space that can be concealed when required. A generous north facing deck, with a carefully proportioned cantilevered roof, provides a shaded summer oasis while also permitting the winter sun to flood right through the home, ensuring year-round comfort and enjoyment. Inside, a linear gas fireplace adds a cosy focal point to the seating area in the living room. However, the home's superior insulation and strategic northern orientation harness passive solar gain so effectively that no additional heating is necessary. Placement of windows on either side facilitate ample cross ventilation for summer heat control. The master bedroom located at the eastern end enjoys morning sun. Large areas of glass open out to provide a seamless connection with the sun-drenched deck. At the western end of the home, a cosy library and media room adjoins the two guest bedrooms and generous bathroom, offering the flexibility of an option to separate this wing for the private use of long-term guests. A generously sized opening skylight floods the internal bathroom with natural light, allowing the use of a darker tile without overwhelming the room, creating a balanced and tranquil oasis. With its generous hallways, wider than standard doors, level entry showers and thresholds the home embraces durability, functionality, and aesthetics, ensuring that this forever home will stand the test of time. www.GreenBuildProjects.co.nz

A quiet understanding Shared values are vital when you’re embarking on a project that will have generational impact. When Jane and Peter looked at building a holiday home on a piece of land that had been in their family for nearly 40 years, they recognised kindred thinking in the Box™ ethos. The couple had initially approached an architect before those plans proved a little too ambitious and expensive. “We wanted a house that was comfortable and grounded,” says Jane. “Even though we had a big section, we didn’t want to make a huge statement.” The elevated site, just outside of Matakana, is within an original beachside hamlet where time seems to have slowed. It has lovely views across Kawau Bay and the dotted islands of the gulf towards Snells Beach and Algies Bay. For several years, they enjoyed holidays in a barn they built on the property in the 1990s, the kind of makeshift, nofrills getaways that put life into perspective. “Our brief was for something sympathetic to the 30-year-old cedar barn,” says Jane. Box™ design manager Tony Borland-Lye was on board with this concept immediately. He set about crafting an architectural alignment - a cousin in keeping that would stand in solidarity alongside the barn.

Textural touches include a concrete-block fireplace wall and plywood-lined ceilings.

Quiet and elegant, the house takes the form of an elongated rectangle with a singular gable. This was not the time or the place for fanciful notions. It was the opportunity to practise principles of restraint. Taking a cue from the clients, the building depth is only one-room wide “We wanted to look straight through from one side of the house to the other so we could enjoy the view wherever we were sitting,” says Jane who found the 3D modelling she was shown of the design made everything so much easier to envisage. Not that all the ideas came from the owners. When they touted an all-black house, Tony pushed back, opting for silver on the roof. He also suggested skylights and to expose the structural trusses in the main living zone which gives the whole living space a more elevated feel. Textural touches include the addition of a concreteblock fireplace wall and plywood-lined ceilings. Working to the budget required some out-of-the-box thinking too. Originally with three bedrooms in the house, Box™ convinced Jane and Peter to incorporate a bathroom and kitchenette in the barn, so it became a self-contained space. The 115-square-metre new-build comprises two bedrooms grouped at the western end of the pavilion, and a bathroom and separate toilet are pragmatic for when the couple has friends and family over.

The silver roof provides a contrast to the black cladding.

Opting to renovate the barn, meant enough left over in the budget for a deck, with a louvred-roof. The south-facing courtyard at the front and the two alfresco areas work in tandem to provide shelter whichever way the wind blows. Although Jane was slightly anxious about building, having heard some horror stories about how stressful it could be, she found it “quite fun”. “It’s all about trust,” she says. During construction, she liaised with the builders and visited the site, making so few changes that the final cost came in only slightly above the quote. Jane loves the contrast of her busy city life and the solitude and peace only an hour’s drive north. With three adult sons who also enjoy getting up to the house regularly, many lifetimes of holidays on the hill await. www.Box.co.nz | 0800 717 717

Immerse yourself in nature Made By Hideaway is a bespoke building company based in Auckland building tiny homes, custom designed outdoor saunas, sleepouts and other small dwellings locally and nationwide. Their first rentable off-grid cabin, fondly named Mabel, is remotely located in the rolling hills of rural Waipu and awaiting your visit.

Designers and Builders Rick and Nikki Hill, have strong family ties to the area so jumped at the chance to try out the landshare concept in a beautiful spot just a short ten minute drive from Waipu township. Teaming up with local landowner, Lisa Sutherland, to bring you the ultimate getaway nestled in the Brynderwyns overlooking Bream Bay and Whangarei Heads; they have designed a traditional kiwi inspired corrugate cabin which perches neatly into the local landscape. The cabin sits amongst eight hectares of native bush and has clear views across pastoral fields to the Pacific Ocean in the distance. Despite being small in size it has everything you need for a short getaway, including a queen sized bed, mezzanine for the kids, full kitchen, shower room and, the heart and soul of the cabin, ‘Roaring Meg’ the wood burning fire. Topped off with the luxury of an outdoor bath with a view. Aimed at getting folks away from the hustle and bustle and getting people to turn off their phones and enjoy the surrounding nature, Mabel is the perfect spot to get some peace and quiet. Whether it's walking around the nearby forest, taking an outdoor bath or cooking on the fire, there are many ways to reconnect with your loved ones and recharge the batteries.

It’s about making the most of those often neglected experiences like the light shifting throughout the cabin, the salty breeze wafting through the windows and the gentle hum of nature surrounding you. If you love waking up to the sound of birds, hearing the crackle of fire and putting your feet up, then this is the spot for you. Creative Matakana: the perfect excuse for an annual catch-up Matakana’s seventh annual week of arts and food workshops will include some big names in 2024. Bookings open on Monday 8 January at 8am – be ready as some will sell out! Wo rd s K a t hy Hu n t e r

Each year in May, a group of Susy Smith’s friends from around the country head to her place, put dibs on bedrooms, unpack and get ready for a week of fun at Creative Matakana. They’ve been doing this since the annual week of arts workshops began, in 2017. “We all go way back to university and nursing days,” says Susy. “Most of us are in our seventies now! It’s a great way to make sure we get together regularly. We catch up, figure out a dinner roster, get into creative mode and have lots of laughs.” Susy tries to do something different each year – she’s done abstract art, writing,

photography, print-making and more. A few of her friends focus on the textile workshops; they all finish the week tired but happy. “One of the best things about Creative Matakana is the quality of the tutors,” Susy says. “I quite enjoy doing things outside my comfort zone, but once or twice when I’ve been a bit nervous it’s that fantastic level of teaching experience that’s got me through.” Team Susy is bound to be excited by the workshops now online for 2024. As usual, there’s a mix of week-long courses and shorter workshops.

Five-day courses include a choice of three visual arts classes (contemporary landscape, still life, cold wax), the various uses of indigo, textile art using metallics, making a greenwood chair, photography and creative writing. The writing tutor is a coup – author Stephanie Johnson, who won the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2022. Shorter workshops cover contemporary calligraphy, creating a hand-bound book, making a rag-rug, screen-printing and bonsai. There will also be some fabulous options for foodies – sessions with global

cheese and charcuterie aficionado Juliet Harbutt and, in another coup, Ahi restaurant’s executive chef Mike Shatura, who will demonstrate his award-winning techniques and cook lunch at a beautiful local home. In 2024, Creative Matakana will turn seven. It will be a bittersweet anniversary, as its founder Jo Connor will be stepping down from the role of Creative Director. The hard work of organising a week of arts workshops is enormous fun for Jo, and she’s always ready for a knees-up at the end of the busy week. Her cheerful, ‘she’ll-be-right’ approach to problems, her connections and keen sense of humour have made Creative Matakana what it is today – a much-anticipated fixture on the autumn calendar for many. A new model for Creative Matakana is under discussion, but it will continue to deliver wonderful creative opportunities in the future. Bookings open online on Monday 8 January, 8am. Crafting connections through outdoor play A family affair crafting and building quality, open-ended, outdoor toys and furniture from a range of locally sourced timbers.

Meet the family behind Wild Wood Creations; Adam and Ash and their three daughters - Luna (4), Daisy (2) and Nixie (5 months). Based in Mangawhai, Adam, an experienced builder with 20 years in the building industry under his belt, made their first mud kitchen for eldest daughter, Luna, three years ago. Luna loved being outdoors and getting messy and the couple wanted to encourage this. Word spread among friends and locals as interest in the mud kitchen grew. Identifying a gap in the market for quality outdoor toys that were not made of plastic, Adam and

Ash started Wild Wood Creations, which has naturally evolved as a business since. Ash, who is an ex-teacher, and Adam, understand the importance of play for children's learning. All of their pieces are made with the intention of encouraging children to get outside. Believing we live in times where disconnection from nature, each other and self, can happen easily, the idea behind each of their creations is to get children off screens, outside and connecting with nature.

As children become involved in playing with an open ended activity, such as a mud kitchen, they are developing numerous vital life skills, including creativity, problem solving, collaboration, imagination, perseverance and more. All Wild Wood Creations pieces are crafted by Adam, in his shed on the family property. The couple pride themselves on knowing each item is handmade to a high standard. The materials used are all sourced locally with a range of different timbers utilised. Supplying to many families as well as

MATAKANA’S QUEEN OF CRIME RETURNS WITH THE SECOND THRILLER IN HER MATAKANA SERIES Blood on Vines was a confident debut with compelling characters, a twist-laden narrative and a colourful capturing of the local community, something easily turned into an upmarket The Brokenwood Mysteries. Rings on Water trumps with a particularly brutal killing using the simplest of materials. While Blood on Vines involved envy and competition between friends in the local wine industry, here Eskedahl builds the plot around a suave drug importer and property developer who’s bringing in drug shipments using amphibious boats. Eskedahl clearly enjoys writing dark characters. While an unexpected twist in the final pages will divide readers, this is another solid thriller from Eskedahl.

A creative haven in the heart of Warkworth Not just a store but a reflection of the owner's passion and creativity. Pretty Useful is a sweet little shop, born from a desire to infuse a touch of beauty and humanity into our lives. The woman behind Pretty Useful, Antonia de Vere, is no stranger to design and creativity. With a successful homeware company, started with husband Mark Sweeney, already under her belt, you’ll find a lot of the design aesthetic of Mark Antonia, known for their dried floral arrangements and scented candles, reflected in the Pretty Useful store; which also serves as Antonia’s studio. Hoping the store can fill a gap she noticed in the town's offering, Antonia has focussed her product range on interesting and reasonably priced gifting options. Her previous experience in retail, combined with a deep appreciation for the person-to-person aspect of customer interactions, served as the catalyst for Pretty Useful. "There's nothing like that human experience of helping inform in-person rather than over an email," she emphasises. Customers can expect to find a delightful array of items that, as the name suggests, are both pretty and useful. From her one-of-akind floral arrangements and Mark Antonia designs to a selection of homewares, teas, soaps and candles. She also showcases knitted cloths and bags made by her mother and handmade jewellery by her cousin Sophie Divett; there really is something for everyone. Pretty Useful is more than just a store; it's a haven for creativity and inspiration. Antonia offers workshops for those interested in learning the art of floral design. These classes can be booked individually or as a fun group activity, offering a unique way to spend your time. With an online store you can easily purchase the majority of the in-store range to be delivered right to your door and book workshops directly. Not to be missed, the in-store experience of walking into Pretty Useful is like stepping into a calm and serene oasis. The colour palette, soft peaches with royal blue highlights, sets the tone for a relaxed visit. Soft lighting and playful music add to the delightful ambiance. "I want my customers to have fun and enjoy their time inside," Antonia notes. The store's interior, though compact, is thoughtfully designed. Every inch has been maximised to ensure efficient use of space, with hidden storage solutions and versatile furnishings transforming the shop into a dynamic, beautiful space. So, if you find yourself in Warkworth, be sure to pop into Pretty Useful; have a chat with Antonia, explore unique items, and learn something new. Mindful movement with Restore Restore Physio & Pilates was established in 2022 by Physiotherapist, Victoria McKechnie. Victoria’s vision is to provide the people of Warkworth and its surrounding regions with access to the highest standard of Physiotherapy and Health care, in a calm and relaxing environment. P h o t o s Ta m m y L e e P h o t o g r a p h y

Victoria’s passion for health and wellbeing led her to pursue her career as a Physiotherapist, initially completing her undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy and a decade later earning her Masters Degree in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology. Her extensive experience spans various healthcare settings, including hospitals and private practice. This wide-ranging foundation of Physiotherapy knowledge and expertise has been instrumental in her role as a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. Throughout her years of practice, Victoria continued to expand her education and training in the realm of exercise and movement. She delved into a spectrum of approaches, ranging from gym-based strength and conditioning training to mat and reformer Pilates. In this exploration, Victoria discovered the immense value and restorative benefits of gaining and maintaining movement and mobility, as well as strength and function in order to recover well from injury and be able to live a happy and fulfilling life. And so, Restore Physio & Pilates was born; Warkworth’s first Physio Clinic with in-house Pilates and Yoga studio! The term ‘Restore’ perfectly encapsulates the essence of Victoria’s mission - to bring back or re-establish well-being, to return individuals to their former state of health, and to facilitate treatment when necessary. Restore has now expanded to include experienced senior Physiotherapist Rebecca Doyle, the highly trained and well-known local Pilates instructor Nicole O’Donnell, and established Yoga instructor Wendy Douglas.

Restore offers both ACC and Private Physiotherapy appointments, Physio-led mat and reformer Pilates classes, personalised one-onone sessions, and specific classes for men, mums and bubs, and over 65s. They work across all age ranges from the young sporting athlete to the older person, including arthritis management and falls prevention. What sets Restore apart is their dedication to keeping class sizes small, ensuring that their instructors can provide individualised attention and guidance. This, in turn, maximises the benefits of each session. For more information about the services they offer and their class timetable, visit their website. You can contact them through their website, book appointments online, or call to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation to determine the best options for your needs. www.RestorePhysioAndPilates.co.nz | 09 945 0399

Antiques and aromas unite The village in the valley; Paparoa sits a mere 19 km along SH12 - a rural community of friendly people and historic buildings tucked along the banks of the Paparoa river. Quince Cottage is a new 'old' addition to the Paparoa valley, nestled between the 1868 Paparoa store and Cliff House, on Franklin Road.

Tony Bozzard began Quince Cottage Collectables from his appreciation of heritage, sharing the space with his wife, upcycler Maggie, and natural perfumer Virginia Di Somma. The 1910 villa is a site worthy of inspection on its own accord, but now it is filled with a curated array of eclectic delights for the astute treasure hunter. Clarice Cliff and Crown Lynn pottery, quirky designer cushions, exquisite crystal and unique curios sit side by side with up-cycled clothing, linen and crafts. Says Tony, “Old homes and antiques are a lifelong passion of mine. I came to New Zealand in 1990 from Surrey, England, and I moved to Paparoa nine years ago," wherein he bought Cliff House, itself now a popular Bed and Breakfast. “I finished restoring my heritage house and filled it with antiques but wanted to keep buying more. When Quince Cottage was relocated and restored, it sat empty. Friends encouraged me to open a shop with Maggie. It was a great way to continue my love for collecting strange antiques and other items.

Natural perfumer and skincare maker, Virginia, from The Olfactory became passionate about natural perfume after learning that many harmful ingredients used in perfumes and skincare today seem to have escaped the scrutiny of governing bodies. Not only are the scents of such harmful ingredients a far cry from the scents of real plant essences, but they disrupt the endocrine system responsible for balancing our hormones. After going to Italy to learn more, Virginia returned home inspired to design a consultative process that would assist the design of personalised scents to embody the wearer and genuinely improve wellbeing. "All through time, people have known that aromas cause people to experience a wide range of feelings. So what if we could take this deeper meaning of the language of perfume and bottle it into exclusive scents specifically tailored to individuals,” muses Virginia. Working with plant oils that are expertly grown and extracted from all parts of the plant, distilled from the flowers, leaves, peels, barks, resins, seeds or roots; each

ingredient holds therapeutic value and a scent unlike another. Drawing from more than 250 unadulterated essences in her perfumery guarantees an individualised composition every time, with base, heart and top notes specifically chosen by each client. “To wear a scent that is uniquely personal, rather than a hodgepodge of synthetic smells under the title of a celebrity name, is a choice that in itself takes one on a journey of exploring exactly what they wish to radiate out to others,” says Virginia. From a deeper level of adornment for a bride on her big day, to an ideal gift for a grandparent or friend who ‘has everything’, or simply an indulgence for yourself, each perfume is entirely unique and personal to the wearer. Browse the eclectic collection at Quince Cottage Collectables from Thursday to Sunday 11am–3pm and explore the personalised scents at The Olfactory from Thursday to Saturday 11am-3pm, at 1 Franklin Road, Paparoa. A nature oasis for inquisitive minds In the heart of an old vineyard and farm, there exists a place where children's dreams take root, where the curious spirit roams free, and where the boundless wonders of nature become the canvas for learning. This haven of discovery is none other than Wildly Curious, an outdoor learning centre where children are encouraged to explore, question, and grow in the embrace of the great outdoors.

Wildly Curious's outdoor learning environment is grounded in a simple yet profound philosophy: Nature serves as the primary foundation from which inquiry-based teaching styles are built. This philosophy stems from the belief that the natural world is the ultimate educator, and it's here that children find their truest selves. As they roam through the fields, bush and vineyard, they engage with the world in a way that textbooks and classrooms can never replicate.

risk-taking is rooted in an essential concept - it's as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible. This philosophy, aligned with the forest school principles, acknowledges that children need opportunities to push boundaries, explore their capabilities, and learn from their mistakes. It's an environment where falling down teaches them to get back up, and getting muddy fosters a connection to the earth.

The centre's mission goes far beyond imparting knowledge; it seeks to instil a love of learning, cultivate a healthy sense of self, and imbue the confidence to think freely. By focusing on the holistic needs of every child, including their social skills, resilience, creativity, and self-esteem, Wildly Curious equips them to succeed in any setting throughout their lives.

The team at Wildly Curious, led by Clara Whittington-Pyle, doesn't just rely on the beauty of the natural world alone. Their educational philosophy is deeply rooted in a strong foundation of research and best practices. They continuously seek the latest knowledge and insights, which they use to nurture the growth, well-being, and happiness of each child and the entire learning community.

Nature Immersion Programs is simple, yet profound. It's about embracing the outside environment to help children learn and grow as individuals. In the process, they develop self-confidence, find their sense of purpose, and discover the thrill of meeting new challenges head-on. This isn't just a school; it's a sanctuary for young minds to flourish. In the old vineyard and farm where the new home of Wildly Curious is, children become explorers, artists, scientists, and dreamers. They revel in the wisdom of nature, and through this, they discover the world, themselves, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Wildly Curious is more than an outdoor learning centre; it's a portal to a brighter, more inquisitive, and infinitely more curious future. www.WildlyCurious.nz www.instagram.com/WildlyCurious.NZ

Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show 2024 On Saturday 16 March 2024 the Warkworth A&P Society will present their 156th A&P Show, making it one of the longest running A&P Shows in the country.

Bringing the country to town and with it creating a unique atmosphere, the Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show is a notto-be missed event; the Society believes everyone should have the opportunity to experience an A&P Show! The 2023 Show was a huge success and organisers are looking forward to building on this with the 2024 Show. Chairman, Carl King, says “over the years the show has changed and now reflects a blend of urban and rural whilst still retaining many of the traditions of the past.” Major attractions such as the shearing and woodchopping events are always popular with crowds, and are keenly contested by those taking part. Cattle will once again feature at the show, as well as miniature horses, donkeys and mules; the opportunity to get up close to the animals is a real experience. The Cowboy Challenge group is back in the equestrian oval this year, along with other equestrian events. The Indoor Exhibits tent will showcase art, crafts and produce from the local community. The Show is a fantastic family day out with

plenty to see and do, including free rides and lots of entertainment for the kids. The inclusion of the market stall sites last year was well received by those who attended the show with a broad range of merchandise on offer. It was also great to see local companies who exhibited at the commercial trade sites being well supported on the day.

The Society would like to thank their principal sponsor, Wharehine Contractors, for the continued support, along with major sponsors Absolute Concrete, Northland Waste, Mason Contractors, Auckland Council and Carter’s Tyres. www.WarkworthShow.co.nz

The stage will feature local community groups such as the Kapa Haka and Pasifika groups, and the Warkworth Pipe Band. There will also be live music to entertain the crowds. This year the show will continue into the evening with a Hoedown taking over from 4.30pm until 10pm. The bar and food sites will stay open and there will be some great country music live on stage. And we can’t leave out the line dancing! The Hoedown will be a separately ticketed event. Look out for more information on the Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show Facebook page, and at Eventfinda.co.nz. To book a market or commercial site and for all other show information visit their website.
