EMPOWERING OUR YOUTH Blue Light is a registered charity that has been delivering programs and activities for New Zealand youth for over 35 years. Working in partnership with the Police, they provide an extensive range of programmes and activities free from drugs, alcohol, and violence. Words Leah Botherway

For me, the words' Blue Light' brings back memories of a 12-year-old girl clumsily dancing to Spice Girls' Wannabe in the Warkworth Townhall. The Blue Light discos were a highlight on any tween's social calendar and an opportunity to get loaded up on fizzy drinks and dance in a perfectly formed circle with your friends. While I won't hear a bad word about the Blue Light Discos of my youth (or my dance moves, for that matter), Blue Light has come a long way and now offers an array of activities from leadership programmes right through to fishing competitions. They work in partnership with the New Zealand Police and other government agencies and local families, schools, and community groups to deliver a range of programmes to the local youth. North Rodney Blue Light (NRBL) has been operating since 1992 and is an affiliated member of the national charity. Covering the area from Warkworth to Maungatoroto, over the years, NRBL has worked with tens of thousands of young locals aged between 8 and 18 to help reduce the number of young

people becoming offenders or victims of crime. Shane Gould has been the man behind NRBL for over 25 years and has dedicated his time to ensure that local youth are given the best chance at life. Shane has worked tirelessly over the last quarter of a century, creating programmes and activities for local teens and has every intention of continuing to do so for the foreseeable future. Following a couple of strange years in which a lot of young people's mental health has taken a hit, and they've had to rely so heavily on devices to provide not only entertainment but their education as well. For this reason, Shane is determined to get young people back outside. "One of the things we want to gear up this year is our focus on mental health and wellbeing," Shane says. "I find spending time outdoors an equaliser, and it can be so beneficial to a person's mental wellbeing. So as we head back into some sort of normality following Covid, we want to get young people off devices and back outdoors with their peers and the community."

The outdoor activities on offer range from camping and fishing to mountain biking and kayaking – which is their most popular outdoor activity with between 800 and 1,000 people attending every year. These programmes not only get young people outside and away from their screens, but they teach them valuable lessons such as water safety. The Gemstone Life Skills course is one of the most popular programmes that NRBL offers. Throughout the programme, the young attendees are encouraged to consider the appropriateness of and take responsibility for their present behaviour. After completing this course, participants will have been taught the necessary skills and tools to make a positive personal change. "The outcomes we get from people attending the Gemstone Life Skills course is life-changing for a lot of them.” While the discos may now be a thing of the past, Shane and his colleagues at NRBL have every intention of continuing to support local youths to reach their full potential. www.facebook.com/NorthRodneyBluelight www.nrbl.org.nz

NO TRUER WORDS WRITTEN Twenty years ago, Maria Gill moved to a small seaside village north of Auckland. It was also twenty years ago that Maria Gill completed the promise she made her 13-yearold self. That one day, she would be a published writer. Words Kate Moore

Fast forward to the present day, and Maria has a total of 60 publications under her belt. Twenty-seven of these are children's books that can be purchased from book shops. The remainder are educational books sold to the international market. One of her most recognisable titles is a children's nonfiction book called 'Anzac Heroes.’ This book has won the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adult Non-fiction Award. It also claimed the prestigious Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award. Before becoming an award-winning author, Maria was a teacher (and a self-confessed bookworm) who spent four years teaching intermediate-age school children before starting her own family. When her daughter started daycare, Maria set about planning how to fulfill her earlier promise. She enrolled in creative writing courses thinking that she would write fiction books. However, a short

two years later, a nonfiction photography book was published titled 'Birds Eye View,’ a unique perspective on birdlife in New Zealand. Maria says that when she saw her name on an actual book for the first time, she jumped up and down with excitement and that that feeling has never gone away with each new publication. She has recently completed her Master’s in Creative Writing and took up a residence in Christchurch. This residence led to the completion of a historical fiction book for young adults based on a true

story of a famous New Zealander and is set to be published this year. In 2021 alone, she was published three times, with the first "New Zealand Disasters" released in February. Maria said it was a hard publication date to stick to as the disasters kept coming, and the manuscript had to be amended to remain factual and relevant. Then, in August, she released 'Remarkable Animals from New Zealand and Australia', a collection of short stories with animals at the forefront. And finally, in

October, she published a positive war story titled 'The King's medal,’ which tells the tale of how a group of New Zealand Soldiers saved the Greek King of Crete. Maria is the first to admit that after publishing many books, she can be cheeky when pitching a new story idea. Generally, she will develop a plan, with the initial idea sparked by something she has seen, read, heard about, or is happening in the world around her. Then she will complete a test page. As most of her books are sophisticated picture books, she gets one of her many talented illustrators to illustrate the test page and then submit it. But, as she says, "there's no point in writing a whole book and spending all that time on it if no one wants to publish it!" To any aspiring writers out there, Maria's words of wisdom are that "the money isn't great, so you need to truly love it. You also need to become a presenter as holding writing workshops and doing school tours will help. Do courses and learn. Work out what is already on the market and find a new angle. Don't just regurgitate." www.mariagill.co.nz

SELF-SUFFICIENCY SEA CHANGE Gorse, mud, and hard physical work felt like an ever-ending story for Les and Jenni Ross as they developed their lifestyle block at Kaiwaka. For 14 years, they were ‘weekend warriors’ driving up on a Friday and back on Sunday night to go to work on Monday. In 2020, during the start of the first lockdown, they moved permanently to the homestead they call Fernlea. They strive to be as self-sufficient as possible while continuing to enjoy the comforts of modern life. Off-grid and land to table living is filled with endless possibilities, and these are being fully experimented with because their backgrounds, skills, and experience

are so diverse. Les is from farming stock and a career military man with very practical bones. Jenni, a trained teacher and serial entrepreneur, is creative at heart, and she ensures every project they do is given a twist. Evidence of this is hard to miss when you meander around the property. Quirky artwork and signs pop up where they are least expected, from organic wall mosaics to graffiti on a courtyard wall and choosing to paint their glasshouse pink. While they have different approaches, they

Fernlea is an exclusive country retreat of beauty and tranquility, offering weekend getaways, for maximum of four guests at a time. It is a place where you can unplug and unwind, and experience living land to table and off-grid in comfort. To book your weekend visit the website.

both want the same things from the property. As they head into retirement, they want to keep costs down, and so generating their own power and living land to the table makes perfect sense. They have a grid-tied system, which means they use the grid as a backup battery to give them continuity of power during cloudy, rainy days, and they also push excess energy they generate back to the grid for which they get credit. Jenni is always excited to get a bill for power showing credit; it is a very good feeling. In addition

to their own power and rainwater, they have started growing vegetables and have the usual menagerie of farm animals, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and dogs. On their 14-year journey, many friends and family have been encouraging and lent a hand, but there have also been the naysayers. One of the biggest criticisms is the amount of work a lifestyle block can be, especially as they are getting older. Les and Jenni see this as a bonus, a way to keep fit and give them a sense of purpose in retirement. That aside, they are conscious the muscles don’t work the way they used to, so have taken great care to plan accordingly, with wide gently sloping garden paths, and raised vegetable beds. Les is a bit of an animal whisperer. He can get all the animals to come when he calls, so there's no need to run around the paddocks chasing sheep! What excites them the most? They are now in a position to share their journey. They are part of the Mangawhai Garden Ramble this year, and in 2022, are running off-grid workshops, will be open for exclusive weekend stays, and will be holding events, including a Pink Ribbon breakfast. www.fernlea.kiwi hello@fernlea.kiwi

JUNIOR YOGIS Yoga for kids has become more popular in physical education classes in schools and after-school programs. Photos Dominey Flores

Through yoga, children can encounter breathing techniques, behavioural guidelines, and physical postures that can be incredibly valuable for them in everyday life. Many believe yoga enhances physical flexibility, refines balance and co-ordination, develops focus and concentration, strengthens the body-mind connection, and helps build self-esteem and self-respect. If you would like your little ones to experience some peace on the yoga mat, here are some tips to get them started. DON’T FORCE THEM – If your child is adamant yoga isn’t their thing, don’t force it, as this will have the opposite effect of what you’re trying to achieve. Instead, give it time, let them watch you practice, and slowly over time they won’t want to miss out and will give it a go. KEEP IT AGE APPROPRIATE – Toddlers and pre-schoolers just want to play, so it's best to introduce make-believe and playtime into your yoga. Pretend you’re a gardener planting a tree, for example.

Balasana kids yoga mats, Bali Garden - www.baligarden.nz Blank Slate Matakana kids tees, Blank Slate - www.facebook.com/blankslatematakana

LET YOUR KID TEACH YOU – Build your kids’ involvement and confidence by letting them teach you a few moves or two. INTERACT + GO WITH THE FLOW – Kids just want to spend time with you, so be present, patient and have fun no matter how crazy things get. MAKE IT A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE – The end goal is for your kids to enjoy yoga, which means they have to associate with the practice positively. So keep it light and have fun!

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY... “I first met Rob as a colleague several years ago and knew he was a salesperson who acted with the highest level of professionalism and integrity. When I was asked to help my elderly cousin sell her home of many years and to move her into a retirement home I knew Rob would be the best person to use. Rob treated everyone with patience and respect, even in difficult situations. He kept us fully informed daily and had great attention to detail. He handled every part of the process flawlessly and the result was exceptional. He has the highest standards of professional competence and we unreservedly recommend him as a highly professional and effective real estate agent.” Paula S

“Linda was fantastic. Informative, punctual, and wonderfully responsive and helped me through both the buy (and sell!) process and achieved a very good result on both occasions. She has a wonderful grasp of the key value drivers of property in the Matakana area and provided excellent data when asked. I would recommend her highly.” William “Linda is a very professional, personable and fully committed agent who exceeded all of my expectations in achieving a very fast sale along with a fantastic price. DRESS FOR ETERNITY ‘The act of wrapping a deceased loved one in a shroud is a very uplifting act and very intimate. It’s a privilege to be able to do it, and there’s a lot to be gained from it in the grieving process,’ says Karen Williamson of Akeake Shrouds. A shroud is a large piece of fabric used

to wrap a dead body in preparation for burial or cremation, and it can be used instead of a coffin or inside a coffin. Akeake shrouds are unique in being eco-dyed and stunningly beautiful. Shrouds and natural burials are becoming increasingly common but are still quite challenging for many. "People find the whole process of dealing with dead people difficult," explains Karen. "It might even be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some. If they buy a shroud from me, I like to nurture them through the process. It’s very simple but having another family member or friend to

Karen spent many years as a community palliative care nurse in the Mahurangi area and worked with many people interested in a burial or cremation that was eco-friendly and affordable. "I was doing eco-dyeing already, so I thought I would have a go at dyeing a piece of fabric large enough to be a shroud. I wanted people to have options." Each shroud is made of pure silk, linen or cotton, and individually hand-dyed with local and sustainably-sourced plants. "I’m an advocate of natural burials, so everything to do with these shrouds will compost down and become part of the earth."

Not everybody likes to plan for their funeral, but Karen is a strong advocate for being prepared. "You can bring family and friends and custom dye the shroud with plants of your choice – favourite roses from your garden, for example. Make it a memory. The shroud is then ready for when you die, and family members know what to do with it. And who’s to say you don’t use it in the meantime as a bed cover, couch throw, or wall hanging. It doesn’t have to be hidden away and can be part of the normalising of death." The best way to enquire about or purchase a shroud is to go to Karen’s website, where full details are provided. www.akeakeshrouds.co.nz

With the opening, The Space will be launching a new class, The Essence of Yoga, to help deepen your yoga practice, whatever your stage. Each 60-minute class weaves together the biomechanics and physiology of the body with the philosophy of the yoga traditions. A series of just three to four poses (asanas) and their variations are broken down to build body awareness and neuromuscular connection so you can truly feel the benefits of each pose as they relate to you. Knowing the energy lines in the body helps to build strength, mobility, and embodiment. Two teachers will lead the class, one solely to support physical adjustments to suit your body and personal needs. In the first half of this year, you can also join in a number of guest teacher workshops and event sessions with the likes of consciousness expert Dr. Graham Mead, Claire Robbie, and her team from The School of Modern Meditation, the No Beers Who Cares organisation, and women's Ayurvedic specialist Celine from Saatva Soul. www.thespacematakana.nz

CREATING YOUR OWN CRYSTAL PALACE Adding crystals to your home is a great way to improve the mood while adding to the design. Photos Dominey Flores

Not only can crystals fit into most décor styles, they are soothing, colourful, and one of Instagram’s top home trends. But where should you put what crystals? FRONT ENTRANCE – Protect and cleanse your home by placing black tourmaline at your front door. A piece of jade is said to welcome wealth and good luck to your home. LIVING ROOM – Create a relaxing atmosphere in your living room by placing amber on a shelf or coffee table tray. A cleansing crystal-like selenite or amethyst for clear communication is also recommended. KITCHEN – Rose quartz will add a nurturing energy to the food you are preparing, while celestite enhances health and wellbeing. Carnelian can be included as an uplifting and energising crystal. BEDROOM – Placing a piece of black tourmaline in each of the four corners of your bedroom will help cleanse the room. A piece of amethyst on your bedside table or under your bed will promote good sleep. Rose quartz will help fill your room with romance, love, and joy.

OFFICE – Amethyst is recommended for a focused and open mind, while placing some citrine on your desk can help with concentration. Tourmaline will help block out negative energy. Placing shungite next to your computer can shield you and provide balance. BATHROOM – Clear Quartz will help clear the energy in your bathroom (not the smell, though, sorry).

WELLNESS SUPPORT FOR KIDS Supporting our children's immune systems has never been more topical, especially as many return to school after extended periods away, leaving some parents feeling a little exposed and nervous. Words Maryana Lishman

A resilient immune system doesn't mean never catching anything or ever getting sick - but rather helping to support a robust and complete recovery. While there are no guarantees, it certainly helps to build a stronger wellness foundation actively, so I'd love to share the strategies I incorporate myself. FOCUS ON WHOLE FOODS

Keeping blood sugar levels balanced has been shown to support immune system activity. Lunch boxes can be tricky to get right due to several factors, so focus on serving a nutrient-dense breakfast and dinner instead,

with easy-to-digest foods that are fun to eat and easy for the body to assimilate. Try a good range of (animal) protein and fats with fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and herbs. Zinc-rich foods are red meat, chicken, fish, peanuts, eggs, nuts, and raw dairy. Foods naturally high in Quercetin are onions, apples, broccoli, tomatoes, berries, and asparagus. In addition, mangos, pineapples, capsicums, and citrus for Vitamin C. Vitamin D from Cod Liver Oil, lard, salmon, sardines and egg yolks. Switch refined, bleached sugars for alternative sources of sweetness. Load up on chicken bone broth, ideally

daily and ensure you're using a good quality unrefined sea salt in your food. FEED THE MICROBIOME A large part of our immune response is connected to the health of our gut. Our digestive lining is covered with billions of both friendly and opportunistic bacteria, all of which play various roles to keep us well and fight pathogens, toxins, and bacteria so we can excrete them. Unfortunately, this microbiome is a symbiotic colony where our more helpful bugs can be depleted by stress, toxin overload, antibiotics, and high sugar/ pressed diets. The flow-on effect is that our immune response can become compromised,

so we want to try and support this and acknowledge the bacteria on our skin and in our mouths. Incorporate fermented foods such as sauerkraut (cabbage) - ideally daily. Or try coconut kefir, coconut/nut yoghurt, fermented carrots, and beet kvass. SUPPORT EFFICIENT ELIMINATION Staying hydrated helps improve digestion and absorption, helps carry oxygen to our cells, aids in removing toxins from the body, and more. Here are some things to consider to help to encourage your kids to drink more: Try some 'bubble' (sparkling mineral) water with a couple of frozen berries or a squeeze of lemon and lime juice!

natural detoxification pathways. Adequate sleep allows the body to recover and restore. Children need between 10 to 14 hours of sleep, depending on their age. Going outside for a walk gives you the chance to move your body as exercise helps produce more natural killer cells. In contrast, responsible sun exposure helps us produce Vitamin D, which is incredibly supportive for immunity. TAKE GOOD QUALITY SUPPLEMENTS DESIGNED FOR KIDS

While supplements can't take the place of a real food focus, there are times that they can help fill the gaps. These are the ones we've found that have made the most difference to us:

Pop a frozen bottle of water in their lunch box in the morning, buy a bag of oranges and squeeze them yourself.

• Daily Herbal Multi-Vitamin Drops

Make a nice warming tea before bed.

• Toddler Vitamin C Liquid Drops

REGULATE THE STRESS RESPONSE It's helpful to remember some kids may find returning to school quite difficult, even if they don't have the language to express this. So give them a safe space to express and work through their emotions. Epsom Salt baths help optimise our own

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MENTORS What stops us from making positive changes to reduce our waste at our workplaces and businesses? Why is it that when faced with a mega landfill being dumped on our doorstep, we still don’t make efforts to reduce the need for landfill by drastically cutting what we ‘throw out’ each week? Words Sarah Bray - Sustainable Kaipara

Well, it’s complex. Research shows that while many people recycle or reduce waste at home, the adoption of sustainable waste management in the workplace is often lower. Behaviour change in businesses needs leadership and consistency, so we need to drive changes from both the top-down and the bottom-up. Those running a small business know firsthand that the day-to-day running of the operations can be all-consuming. Implementing changes to operate more sustainably can seem complicated and too difficult. Then there’s the lack of information about what can be avoided and what can be recycled. Cost is definitely a barrier too, but this will change as the waste levy (the cost to send stuff to landfill) increases over time. Sustainable Kaipara thrives on overcoming these challenges! Our team of experts in resource recovery, compost, and communication provides a multidisciplinary

approach to help you piece together the complex puzzle of implementing real change in your business. We’ve worked with over 30 businesses and ten community groups in our fully funded (no cost to you!) Closing the Loop programme. We mentor businesses and community organisations to minimise waste. We assess your waste and look at what options are available to divert waste. We’ll then look at the waste that’s coming into your organisation and whether supplier engagement can reduce packaging or if there are alternatives such as reusable cups to reduce the amount of waste produced, to begin with. Kaipara can prove a difficult district to implement some services due to the geographical spread of the population and the cost inefficiencies for some waste and recycling service providers to start servicing this area. However, despite these challenges, we’ve seen some incredible businesses

taking on the challenge and showing authentic leadership in these spaces. From the local surf school that’s working to have a net positive impact on our environment to the builders who are going the extra mile to challenge the status quo in the industry with segregation of waste streams, there's plenty of inspiration in Kaipara. No matter what size or type of business you run or whether you have started on any sustainability initiatives, Sustainable Kaipara can help you tackle the challenge. Your customers expect responsible and sustainable practices from you. So it’s time to get on board or get left behind! With an exciting project in the pipeline for 2022 to shake up the way the building industry handles waste, there’s never been a better time to jump online and sign up to our newsletter. It will keep you in the loop to close the loop! www.sustainablekaipara.org

Eco Friendly, Self Sustainable, Matakana Lifestyle Indecision often costs opportunity. So back in mid-1990’s, when Geoff and Bridget had the opportunity to purchase just over 11 hectares of rolling pastural land nestled under Mt Tamahunga, the brave and bold decision was made to sell up in Devonport and move their expectant family north. A decision they say, has bought them the happiest 25 years of their lives. Their vision and dream - self-sustainable, eco-friendly living. It’s almost like they knew where the future was heading! “Unable to travel during the lockdowns, we couldn’t have been happier” Geoff says “hidden away from the world, not having to go anywhere” Avid skiers and with family in the South Island “The time has come for us to head South and leave our dream for someone else to continue” quickly adds Bridget. And that dream has produced something very unique and quite exceptional. Built of the earth from whence it came, natures earthing embrace

wraps you up in the large rustic-style, eco-friendly four-bedroom, 2-bathroom passive solar earth home. True north facing with clerestory windows, the house is designed to stay cool in the long hot summer days, then toasty and warm during the winter months. Bridget’s favourite aspect of the property she says “I have never lived in such a dry and comfortable living house, as I have this one” Ask Geoff the same question though and he quickly

points outside. “My green fingers get itchy if I can’t get out on my tractor” he laments with a cheeky grin. Whether its tending to the well-established olive and banana groves; tutu-ing away in the green houses, vege gardens and seed house; or shifting the hobby stock from one paddock to the next. “I know it’s always been work in progress” he admits “but it’s the progress I get to look out on each night, while eating the food I have helped nurture, that I get the biggest kick out of” the pride

evident as he continues. Built solidly from materials your eyes will want to see and your hands will need to feel. And perched overlooking land your soul can’t wait to explore. This truly is a property you won’t want to leave. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity though. So, what are you waiting for? Come meander up the driveway and start dreaming of what your next lifestyle could look like.

GRINGAS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN To judge the quality of a Mexican restaurant, a chef once said, order their corn chips and salsa first. He reasoned that if time and flair have gone into creating these humble dishes, the rest of the menu won’t disappoint. Words Jes Magill

That’s exactly what we found last month at Gringas’ new Mangawhai venue. The house-made red salsa and hand-cut, handfried corn chips were fresh, fragrant, and flavourful, so next, we ordered the coconut ceviche and Gringas crunch wrap. Again the dishes were stunning. That’s because proud co-owner/operators Deena and Maggie Reynolds will tell you, everything served at Gringas is made fresh each day, with love and only the best ingredients. Kiwi-born Deena and Texas-raised Maggie opened their 100-seat restaurant with its fun, vibrant décor and lively atmosphere in midDecember last year, and it’s no surprise they hit the ground running. They’d been selling their Tex-Mex cuisine with its unique Kiwi twist to local fans and visitors for nearly four years from Gringas food truck just around the corner. Now with a bigger venue, more people are

Then Deena had a vision, “A Mexican food truck. I had a strong hunch it was going to work,” she says, and after some persuasion, Maggie was on board too.

enjoying their fresh, exciting dishes, washed down with chilled beers, crisp wines, lively margaritas, and other cocktails. On busy nights each table is set five times, and in five days, Maggie says, 1000 tacos went out from the kitchen. Gringas transitioned from wheels to solid ground, taking over the former Sandbar restaurant behind the Wood Street shops. The venue might have changed, but the feedback is the same, they say. “We’ve simply created a cuisine that we like to eat,” says Maggie, Gringas’ chef. Maggie and Deena met in Australia in 2016, respectively, working as an au pair and a savvy property manager. The following year, holidaying in Mexico with family, the couple fell in love with the country’s honest, appealing cuisine. Moving to New Zealand soon after and settling in Mangawhai, they were keen for an opportunity to work together.

At their new venue, Deena loves seeing their food delivered, “from grill to table. Seeing our regulars and new customers stay to eat their meals with us is so satisfying. We love seeing the evolution of Gringas, and our menu has stepped up too.” Despite feeling a tad tired after working 100 hour weeks and walking 25,000 steps a day since opening, this couple is delighted they have manifested their dream, and you can taste the joy in their food. “We’re doing well,” says Maggie, “and we’re excited to see where this goes.” 7 Wood Street, Mangawhai admin@gringas.co.nz

GOLDIES FOR BREAKFAST Mum and Daughter duo taking on the world with their healthy breakfast and snack options, one delicious spoonful at a time! For the mother-daughter team behind Goldies Wholefoods, breakfast has earned its title as the most important meal of the day. Advocating for the famous Tim Ferriss phrase “If you win the morning, you win the day,” the Goldies team believes a good day begins with a good breakfast! Mama Rae raised her daughters on natural whole foods and health supplements from a young age. We’re talking about spirulina and echinacea before they were cool… it was the 90’s, baby! So it’s not surprising that this influenced the eldest daughter, Charlotte, to take an interest in nutrition from an early age. Fast forward 21 years and a shiny new business degree from AUT, she combined her passions and started a business selling Fruit Scoops (scoopable smoothies) at local markets.

“I started Goldies Wholefoods (then, Wild & Whipped) three years ago as a student with a passion for healthy food and a killer sweet tooth. Banana ice cream, essentially a very thick smoothie bowl, was my go-to student meal - a delicious and genuinely good for you frozen treat that is 100% plantbased and refined sugar-free. If I ran out of frozen bananas at home or was out and about, I was disappointed to find that this tasty and nutritious treat was nowhere to be found in stores. That’s when a lightbulb went off, and Goldies Fruit Scoops was born”, Charlotte said. After a year or two, things were looking good. Charlotte had completed her post-graduate studies while working a marketing job parttime and selling her Fruit Scoops online and

through a Ponsonby café. During this busy period, she was often popping into small coffee carts for a coffee and breakfast on the go but constantly feeling disappointed at the healthy food options that were on offer (choc chip muffins didn’t make the cut). That’s when she was hit with another lightbulb moment, and Goldies Porridge Pots were born. These convenient grab-and-go porridge tubs only take 60 seconds to prepare. Just add hot water, wait one minute, and voila... your warm, nutritious breakfast awaits! Unlike your standard oat sachets, Goldies adds freshly toasted nuts and chunks of dried fruit to their signature oat and chia seed blend to bring you a protein-packed and fiber-full breakfast that'll keep you going all morning. See you later, 10 am sugar cravings!

Hasta la vista, mid-day doughnuts! Charlotte also developed three keto/paleo flavours made from a blend of nuts and seeds, a great option for those looking for a low-carb snack. This expansion meant Charlotte needed some help getting her products out there. So, with an impressive sales background and an obsession with her daughter’s keto porridge, Mama Rae jumped on board, and the business gained momentum! Realising the popularity and potential of their keto/ paleo porridge, they started offering this mix in larger take-home bags with easy recipes for porridge and bircher and mug cakes and bliss balls smoothies. Today you’ll find their porridge pots dotted in cafés around the North Island; their keto Breakfast Mixes in a range of online and specialty stores, and their Fruit Scoops in Auckland’s Huckleberry stores. You can also catch these ladies in action every Saturday at the Matakana Village Farmer's Markets for a tasty porridge or bircher pot, topped with an abundance of goodies, including their famous spiced apple butter. This all-female, Spicegirls-jamming family business is taking on the world of breakfast, one delicious spoonful at a time! www.facebook.com/goldieswholefoodsnz

DRINK PINK THIS SUMMER Fresh, fruity, flirty. Rosé is the perfect summer wine. With NZ Rosé Day scheduled for Saturday 5 February, it’s a great time to look at the rise of Rosé and how you can best enjoy this popular style this summer. Words Caro Jensen - Sip NZ

We’re lucky that not only an increasing number of Kiwi wineries are now making Rosé, but there has also been a significant increase in the quality of the wines over the years, fuelling its ongoing success. HOW’S NEW ZEALAND ROSÉ MADE? The majority of New Zealand’s Rosé is made from Pinot Noir grapes, though many other varieties are used throughout the various wine regions. Cooler South Island regions such as Marlborough and Central Otago are well suited for Pinot Noir. Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon-based Rosé wines are often made from grapes grown in Hawke’s Bay, Waiheke and Matakana. Grapes are typically handled as gently as possible from vineyard to winery regardless of the variety being used. Most wines are then fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, fruit purity, and aromatic intensity. Oak is rarely used. The final shade of pink relates to the grape variety as well as the length of skin contact between juice and grape skins. Some Rosé, however, is made with the saignée (to bleed) method, which is when the juice is drawn off a red wine early in its fermentation. As a result, these wines can be quite rich in colour and robust in style.

CAN YOU AGE ROSÉ? The short answer is generally you wouldn’t want to, not that you could actually bring yourself to put away some of these beautiful pink-hued bottles. Generally, Rosé is made to be consumed young, similar to white wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. AT WHAT TEMPERATURE SHOULD YOU SERVE ROSÉ? Rosé should be refreshing, so the best thing is to always have a bottle on hand in your refrigerator. The technical definition for how cold it should be is between 5-6°C, but unless you have a wine fridge, simply pop it into your refrigerator a few hours before consumption. POPULAR FOOD MATCHES Rosé is one of the most versatile wines when it comes to food matching, as it can be easily paired with salty, savoury, sweet, and even spicy dishes. Light and dry Rosé wines pair well with light salads, sashimi, and grilled

fish, while medium-bodied Rosé complement antipasti platters, tapas, and smoked salmon. CELEBRATE NZ ROSÉ DAY NZ Rosé Day is set to kick-off the long Waitangi weekend on 5 February 2022. The collaborative initiative of Kiwi Rosé producers was established seven years ago by Sip NZ to raise awareness of New Zealandmade Rosé. “New Zealand Rosé wines are set to take centre stage across the country during this day. Wineries will be celebrating with Rosé lovers online, in their Cellar Doors, restaurants and in-store”, says Caro, founder of Sip NZ. Enjoy a rosé-liscious lunch, a glass of frosé poolside or wine o’clock with a sparkling Rosé on NZ Rosé Day - luckily the summer wine can be enjoyed in many different ways. ROSÉ WINES TO ENJOY

BRICK BAY ROSÉ Brick Bay’s popular Rosé is released every year in spring marking the start of those beautiful warm afternoons, shared with friends, that you wish would never end. This distinctive, offdry wine is evocative of summer berries, with generous layers of stone fruits, plums and citrus, an elegant minerality and a lingering, refreshing finish. As always, this celebrated Rosé has rated very highly and can be enjoyed on its own or paired with food.

BROOKELANE VINEYARD ROSÉ

Nestled in magical Mangawhai Valley, BrookeLane Vineyard is the home of the popular ’Tipsy Tui’ Rosé. A unique blend of our Syrah and Pinot Gris grapes grown on the vineyard, this Rosé is light in colour, beautifully balanced and provides fantastic seasonal berry flavours. Strawberries and Cream comes through strongly in this medium dry styled Rosé, which can be enjoyed as an anytime wine for any occasion.

HERON’S FLIGHT DOLCETTO ROSATO 2020 This rosato is vibrant and refreshing, but rich and soft on the palate.

Heron's Flight created it from their dolcetto grapes for their own enjoyment. They love it! And they're delighted that other folks appreciate it too.

Or for a Rosé experience unlike any other, enjoy a bottle with friends in the vineyard at Brick Bay Wines and Sculpture Trail in Snells Beach.

Tastings are available at BrookeLane Vineyard located at 52 Brooke Lane, Mangawhai between 11am-5pm. 'You may even get to meet Tui Tui'.

A CREATIVE LIFE When we moved from Auckland to Puhoi nearly four years ago after finding our dream home that we affectionately named Puhoi Farmhouse, we finally had the space we needed for having chickens, fruit trees, and a garden. Words + Photos Laura Tait

I had always loved flowers, but I had to forage for flowers to photograph as I never had the budget to buy the ones I really wanted, and now I had the opportunity to be able to grow my own. So with nothing much else to do during lockdown, I began building raised garden beds out of whatever I could get my hands on, learned how to use the drop saw, and friends donated rocks and timber.

there are days when the garden takes all of my time, and there is nothing left in the tank to be creative. But, after all, to connect to the garden instead of just looking at it is about getting your hands dirty. It can be a frustrating journey at times as nature brings its own unique challenges, but to take a bucket of water out to the garden and bring it back filled with cut flowers is a luxury I don’t ever take for granted.

The idea of growing flowers to cut, arrange, and then photograph is not easy. I’m not a florist, and I have no formal training in flower arranging - it’s all very experimental, and

The gardening world is a kind and giving community, with people that are happy to share their treasured flowers, cuttings, spare tubers, and knowledge. I regularly dive into

PRACTICAL BUT BEAUTIFUL Just a decade ago, the landscape reflected a different lifestyle at Baddleys Beach. The sleepy bay was surrounded by farmland and covered with sheep pens and four-legged bundles of wool. Words Kate Moore | Photos Dominey Flores

This 10-acre property, one back from the beach, was purchased by two couples whose friendship began during primary school days. Fast forward through a three-year build process, and there is now a dwelling that is a fortress in relaxation and statue. The 320 square metre build now stands proud towards the back end of the section, and it is a showstopper from a first glance. Justin Molloy, Director of Bungalow & Villa Renovation Specialists Ltd, stepped in 12 months after the first slab was poured. Not just as Project Manager and builder but also as the man to source all the unique pieces a bespoke build entails. Molloy says that "One of our most important areas

of the build is communication. Constant information helps clients understand just what goes into a build. Builds of these types are totally bespoke. Everyone in the team is encouraged to add expertise and ideas to the construction. Our expertise in sourcing and understanding depths and materials to create strong architectural lines was important. For example, we changed designs to accommodate a new square profile on all steel legs. Changes like this led to (us completing) further homework, and we proceeded to upgrade the claddings soffits and so on." Two seemingly simple pavilions create an outline reminiscent of the large hills on one

side, and ebony-stained Western Red Cedar ply covers the entire dwelling and allows this property to blend with the landscape. However, Molloy's favourite feature is the first to welcome you. The bespoke, oversized castle-like double doors are crafted out of African Hardwood with the nails hand-forged in the USA. As the doors were originally a bright red, a New Zealand artist painted them to match the rest of the property's aesthetic. The same artist created the awe-inspiring three-dimensional concrete, which is the first thing you see upon entering the house. These little intricacies are what Justin and his team strive for and are littered throughout the house. At first, they appear to be nothing, but

each assists with pulling the house together for a seamless, minimalist aesthetic. Some are just for beauty, such as the band sawed Western Hemlock that lines the interior walls. While others, such as the fly screens that magically appear and extend across the vast doors and windows, also provide practical elements. While the dwelling’s six metre high ceiling offers immediate grandeur, the interior design and layout invite you to relax. The open plan kitchen with suspended steel lighting, a large dining area, and a lounge allow everyone to sit together. The same room can be configured to create a cosy, intimate space; a large fireplace begs you to recline with a book and a glass of your favourite beverage. The separate entertaining area can be entirely or partially closed off using black aluminium louvre doors, making the space the epitome of indoor-outdoor flow. You can make the deck disappear like a party trick if the elements are not cooperating. As Justin says, we are "Shaping the client's dreams (when constructing a house). I love the ability to pass on my perspectives and help ensure the first time is the only time." www.facebook.com/ bungalowvillarestorationspecialists www.bungalowvilla.co.nz

SEASONAL GARDENING CALENDAR Your garden will be feeling summer’s heat. Some plants planted in spring will get the urge to flower and go to seed. This is a natural part of the garden cycle. It is good to leave a few of these plants to seed before you pull them out and add them to the compost heap. Beneficial insects love this kind of environment. It is all about balance, so let the whole growth process play out. Words Geoff Ledbrook

BENEFICIAL INSECTS FOR PEST CONTROL Many of the insects in your garden benefit from the plants you grow. Insects like parasitic wasps, ladybirds, hoverflies, and lacewings will actively predate on pests like aphids, mites, and whitefly. They are naturally present, but you can boost their numbers and effect with tactical planting of plant species they like as habitats. Phacelia, alyssum, borage, and nasturtiums are all good habitats. Letting garden plants run to flower before removing them is another good way to create predator habitats. Plants in the umbelliferae family-like parsley, carrots, and celery left to flower are good, as are all the brassicas when left to flower (broccoli, mustard, radish, and rocket). Next to or near your garden, wild spaces also act as reservoirs of beneficial insects. For example, dandelions and yarrow left to flower in the bordering grass, comfrey flowering under nearby fruit trees, and natives like hebes and pittosporums can all function as habitat species for beneficial insects.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Your garden is so much more than a place where plants grow. This microcosm of green that you tend has benefits that go way past your front gate. To grow your own food is undoubtedly good for your body. You can eat food grown by your hands, picked fresh, and using inputs chosen by you. For example, fresh salad greens or a sunripened tomato can easily make their way to your table just when you need them. This kind of food is usually of the best nutritional quality, being grown in living soil, ripened naturally, and eaten fresh. As well as the nutrition angle, the act of tending your garden gives exercise and time in nature. Some studies have shown a link between being in a green landscape and reductions in stress and anxiety and even better recovery

from surgery. The Japanese have an expression for this “shinrin-yoku,” which translates to “forest bathing.” How good is that? While we are surfing a wave of benefits, planetary health is one last benefit to add to your garden’s qualities. The food from your garden does not come on a plastic tray with cling wrap over it. There is no packaging to be made and recycled. The food in it does not need to be transported from a farm to a distribution centre to a shop. You can generally dig your garden by hand and transport your produce to your table using just your body. So not a lot of fossil fuel in the growing process either. All great positive contributions to our planet’s health. Sometimes small steps at a personal level are what really counts.

NATURALLY WILD Holly Attwood has always been artistic and creative. She has experimented with nature photography, art, and flowers throughout her life. However, it wasn't until Holly moved to Mangawhai in 2015, initially to experience a coastal lifestyle, that inspiration struck and has resulted in a new business and a new way of life. Initially gaining employment at a Native Tree nursey, she developed a true love and more profound respect for nature. Holly also became aware of how fragile our ecosystem is, so she began a personal mission to re-use and restore items she already had and live an ecofriendlier lifestyle. Being a stay-at-home mum, she wanted to keep the creative side of her brain active, so she started to make dried flower bouquets and arrangements for her enjoyment. As a result, a business called 'Wild Road' has evolved, specialising in wild, free-spirited, personalised dried arrangements for your home or events such as weddings. The beauty of using dried flowers is that they are everlasting, which reduces the need to worry about flowers wilting or not looking their best during a big day. If used as retail décor, they will stay immaculate for longer than fresh foliage. Holly focuses on using natural elements in her arrangements and neutral colour tones, which allows her to focus instead on texture and patterns to create her original collections. An added bonus is being

able to spend more time with her son River who is nearly two, and seeing his enjoyment in helping her forage for foliage. 2022 will see Wild Road expand as Holly looks to increase her range of wares to include a broader range of dried goods and hopes to offer wreaths, walls, retail space, and case arrangements. She has recently become a Registered Marriage and Civil Union Celebrant, so she is now very honoured to present "professional yet fun and meaningful bespoke ceremonies for the modern-day lovers" and has a dream to combine her two passions in the future. www.instagram.com/wildroad.nz 021 087 84088

GYPSEA SOL Surfing is no longer just a man’s game. With more and more surfer girls in the water, it’s about time they had the right products to support their needs and give them one less thing to worry about when they’re chasing the waves… Photos Christina Schmidt

A new local surf brand, Gypsea Sol, was created for the girls who want to spend all day in the ocean but don’t want the dry hair, the sun-damaged skin, and the ill-fitting wetsuit that often comes with it. Gypsea Sol founders, Matakana locals Danica and Mitch, saw a need for a female-orientated surfing brand after Danica decided to join the boys in the water over the last few years but couldn’t find surf products that were made with her needs in mind. In particular, Danica loved spending hours in the sun and salt but hated the damage it was doing to her hair. So from here, their first brand-new product was born: After-Ocean Hair Repair. Made in Auckland after a year of sampling and perfecting the formula, this ultra-nourishing hair spray is designed to save your knotty, dry surf hair. Simply spray through wet hair straight after the water and comb through to detangle, then leave to dry naturally. Enriched with Pro-Vitamin B5, Rosehip Oil, and superfood fruit extracts, your hair is left feeling smooth, clean and revived, all while protecting against further UV damage. Over time, After-Ocean Hair Repair strengthens damaged hair, reduces breakages, and restores shine, so you can finally have those luscious mermaid locks you’ve always wanted.

ART CURATION FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE Clare Mora and Julie Green are the founders of an art curation business with a difference. They take their clients on a bespoke journey where they emotively, intuitively, and evocatively connect art and objects with their clients. Photos Adrian Malloch

While many local Matakana residents know Clare from being a partner in Artform Gallery, it is the other side of her creativity they don’t know. Together with Julie, they bring years of national and international experience to the creative world. While they make sure that the right investments are made, it’s not only about the price – it’s also about the way it all comes together in your home – the curation and how it makes you feel. Have you ever experienced that daunting feeling when walking into a gallery and not

knowing where to look, what questions to ask, or just feeling intimidated by the art or the people who work there? The Artful Curation team is different; it starts the other way around. They find out what will suit you and your family, personality, and home and then match that with the options from over 20 galleries and numerous artists. Because they are independent, they can cherry-pick from all the galleries and their treasure-trove backrooms. The results will be a collection of visual art, sculpture,

objects, and installations that portray who you are. Matched with your budget and phased to honour an organic process, your art experience can be quickly executed or a meandering journey as you like. The journey is as important as the final selection and presentation in their clients’ homes. The client walks away feeling connected to their artwork. Where they see their point of difference is their transformational processes where masterful art curation is combined with

innovative technology. This unique approach where their technology helps the client visualise the art in their home, bringing the artworks to life in their house or garden before committing takes away the risk while being convinced that they are investing in something they love. It’s almost a “try before you buy” process, which is novel, and the whole family will get involved with the selection. "It’s one thing to imagine it in your home, it’s another thing to see it!" Says Clare. Working holistically, they visit their clients’ homes or work via photos and house plans with their offshore-based clients. A digital and then Augmented Reality (AR) presentation leads to the following steps before arranging the delivery, curation, and installation anywhere in the world. With over 30 years of experience in the artistic field, Julie and Clare are as passionate as ever about enriching people’s lives with art. LIFELIKE TECHNIQUES When Sisi Wei posted a picture of her extraordinary resin fish on a local buy and sell page, she received over a hundred comments, all asking the same thing "Are they real?" Sisi diligently replied to each one of the comments explaining that they were painted on and not photographs or decals – she sold out overnight. Words Kate Moore

Sisi moved to New Zealand eight years ago from China and immediately fell in love with "the colours surrounding her, especially the beautiful deep greens." She now resides in Wellsford with her partner Harley and her six-year-old daughter. The Resin Fish take approximately one week to make as there are between 5-7 layers that make up the piece, and each layer of resin takes at least one day to dry. Sisi explains that she spreads a thin layer of resin in the vessel she has chosen, paints one body part of the Koi, and then covers it with another thin layer of resin. The next day, she paints

the next body part, lays another layer, and so on until it is complete. The result is something extraordinarily unique and lifelike. Portraits, though, will always hold the favourite spot in Sisi's heart, and she leans towards Realism techniques and stays away from Abstract. Since 2018 Sisi has been using Prisms Oil Pencils which have lifted the pictures to a different dimension as she can now layer and provide more depth to her subject. Sisi loves watching how people move and how the slightest movement causes their facial muscles to change. She believes that the eyes "capture

the essence of the person’s soul" and that it doesn't matter if the rest of the portrait is not exact, "If I can get the eyes right, it is accurate." Creating lifelike portraits is a lengthy process, so Sisi requests numerous photographs to work from instead of having the subject directly in front of her. After a quick sketch of the overall face, she concentrates on the windows to the soul. Sisi's father recently sent her a photograph of the portrait she completed of him when she was four that he recently found in an old diary. Until this year, Sisi worked as a teacher

His goal was to complete the 3,000km bike ride to raise funds and further awareness for the Tara Iti Whānau Charitable Trust. The Tara Iti Whānau Charitable Trust was established by Ric and Suzanne Kayne, the visioners of Tara Iti, in 2020. The purpose of this Trust was to initiate, establish and administer financial support for the betterment and to overcome the financial hardship of employees, caddies, their families, and people in the wider community. In addition to this, the Trust also supports activities that promote literacy, education, and wellbeing in the area and numerous not-for-profit organisations. Riding between 100-170km a day, Matt reached the finish line in Bluff on 16 December 2021. After completing the epic journey across NZ’s most beautiful countryside, Matt smiled and said, “Some days were magic, some days were tragic,

and the rest, well they were somewhere in between!” No stranger to endurance sport, Matt has completed 56 marathons on seven continents and raised over $1.25 million for multiple charities.

This ride contributes to that count raising a significant amount for the Trust, which will continue to evolve. An employee of Tara Iti said, “Matt is a beacon of hope and inspiration to us all, he has not only cycled

COMMUNITY CREATING PROTECTION FOR KIWI Imagine walking through the forest of Tamahunga, you tread soft on the damp, cold ground, feeling the gentle stroke of ferns against your legs as the red light from your torch bathes the nearby bush in a fiery glow. Then in the undergrowth, the quiet shuffle of three-toed feet, a peep of movement, and suddenly you are in the presence of that increasingly rare phenomenon – a wild kiwi. Sadly, the Kiwi population continues to decline in number, with less than 5% of hatched kiwis making it to adulthood mainly due to predation. However, there are many projects now committed to providing safe, predator-controlled areas for kiwi that are making a significant difference to their survival rates. Through predator trapping by organisations like The Forest Bridge Trust, and with the assistance of local landowners joining together to form traplines on their own land in buffer zones around the central area, survival rates for kiwi chicks can jump to as high as 95%. Controlling predators for kiwi also has the knock-on effect of protecting other native species too – increasing birdsong and biodiversity in your own backyard.

Map prepared 05Nov21

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of a group of committed locals - the Tamahunga Trappers, alongside pest control work by the Department of Conservation (DOC), Auckland Council, and local iwi, Ngati Manuhiri, there is now a safe predatorcontrolled zone to enable a release of approximately 30 kiwis on Mount Tamahunga starting in 2022 – how exciting will it be to have kiwi in our backyards! To support the Tamahunga Trappers kiwi release, work is now underway by the local environmental group The Forest Bridge Trust (TFBT) to engage individuals in the communities around Tamahunga who would like to be a part of this exciting environmental project. Strategically placed Traplines to capture predators before they can reach the kiwi’s safe zone will be incredibly important lines of defence, and landowners keen to have mustelid (stoat, ferret and weasel) trapping on their land, will be an integral part of this. The map shows the primary areas of focus for the kiwi Buffer Zones, working from the central core zone outwards, providing rings of protection for the release site. TFBT Community Liaison team, Michelle and Tris will be out and about visiting properties in the buffer zone areas to engage residents

in early 2022 (as covid restrictions allow) offering training and equipment in consultation with landowners. Michelle and Tris comment: “Our community members will play a vital role in ensuring the success of this release, and the conservation of our native taonga. We are interested in talking to anyone in the area, interested in being a kiwi protector and making their community kiwi safe. We have an experienced and knowledgeable team fully equipped to enhance the excellent work already being done in the community and support you with the resources required to protect the kiwi from mustelids”.

We leave you with a powerful message on the fragility of our native species, and a call to action to save other species under threat. The poignant poem ‘Huia’ by Bill Manhire, about the now extinct Huia bird.

“Whilst our focus for the next six months is supporting the kiwi release, we haven’t lost sight of our wider vision; to create a connected landscape of healthy forests and flourishing indigenous wildlife from the Kaipara harbour to the Pacific Ocean. So, we are also interested to hear from people outside the kiwi buffer zone who are interested in getting involved in controlling these predators within their communities.”

and now a song of love

HUIA I was the first of birds to sing I sang to signal rain

the one I loved was singing and singing once again

My wings were made of sunlight my tail was made of frost

my song was now a warning I sang upon a postage stamp I sang upon your coins

but money courted beauty

you could not see the joins

Where are you when you vanish?

Where are you when you’re found? I’m made of greed and anguish a feather on the ground I lived among you once

Email The Forest Bridge Trust for more information or to be a part of this exciting conservation project.

and now I can’t be found

I’m made of things that vanish a feather on the ground.
