Nurturing canine connections Conscious Canines was founded in 2022 by Hannah whilst completing her Certificate in Animal Management - Canine Behaviour and Training. She has three dogs of her own, holds a certificate in pet first aid, and volunteers for a puppy rescue organisation. Kaipara Flats based, she covers the Rodney district from Silverdale to Te Hana, Port Albert to Kaukapakapa, and Te Arai to Omaha.

Berrylicious delights

Hannah’s canine journey began in 2019 when she got her first dog, sparking a journey to continually search for better ways to understand dogs and make their lives as enjoyable as possible. “I like to think of myself as a canine life coach, to convey the message that human-dog relationships aren’t simply about training, but about connection, emotional, mental and physical needs, and self-expression,” says Hannah. Pottery with heart Tucked away in Puhoi there is a new small batch potter, Stephmade. Steph began creating objects to display and use around her home; a new mug, dessert plates, a place to put olive pits, all of which she embossed with words or raised hearts. “An object needs to make me smile, even if it holds cotton buds; when I started out I made a lot of cotton bud containers,” says Steph. Her favourite creation to date is her Sunday Morning Mug, big and covered in hearts. Stephmade can be found at Puhoi’s Brook & Bridge and the Puhoi Village Market. www.instagram.com/StephMadeNZ StephMadeNZ@gmail.com

Welcome to your village Local parent, Christian Newman has been working on an app for parents to turn a stressful time into ‘me’ time, by connecting parents through Village. Newman says “the classic cliche of ‘It takes a village to raise a family’ is so true”, and because “parents are busier than ever, unfortunately we’ve lost that connectedness.” As parents, we feel guilty asking others to help. Village solves that by connecting parents together to remove that pressure of having to say “yes”, and the guilt of asking for help. A year of growth and support The Women's Centre Rodney, based in Warkworth, has been supporting women in the community since 1987. Dedicated to providing ways to inform, support, and empower women and their families, with a focus on connecting women with each other and with the Women’s Centre Team, 2023 saw increased and improved services offered under the leadership of Jo Nicholson in her first year as Centre Manager.

Floods and Cyclone Gabriel meant 2023 started for Women’s Centre Rodney with a focus on supporting whanau dealing with a difficult and unexpected start to the year. Fortunately this is what the centre does best and it was not long before women were able to access crisis support, pop in and use the shower, accept a food parcel or simply spend some time with a cup of tea and a friendly face. “We realised that the new year was going to be challenging for many women in our region,” says Jo. “We had to be adaptable and responsive from the outset”. The centre has continued to provide counselling, a regular legal clinic, personal

development, drop in centre support, navigation of local support services and advocacy for women at any stage of their journey. These services were well utilised in 2023 with many new faces coming in and a greatly expanded social media presence. Due to the pressures of the cost of living crisis, Jo made a commitment at the start of the year to offer a full program at the least amount of cost to women as possible. Courses were subsidised and sponsored so that price would not be a barrier to being involved, while local businesses and clubs offered women the chance to try new activities ranging from squash, golf, making

dog biscuits and learning how to make an Instagram reel. A huge part of the expansion of the Women’s Centre in 2023 was the consolidation of the Super Grans program. An expanded volunteer base has brought an exciting array of skills and mentoring opportunities to share with the community. Skill sharing was also expanded into the community with Connect Me, a series of workshops run outside of the centre. “We love having the centre in Warkworth and it is the heart of our organisation but we also have seen really positive benefits from taking some of our programs to the community” says Jo.

Another exciting addition to the Women’s Centre Rodney was the beginning of the Women of Worth program. This program centres around being future focused and offers strategies for women to thrive and value themselves, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. 2024 will see the continuation of this program both at the centre and in community locations. The Young Mums Group continued to offer a safe and supportive place for young women with children during 2023, and has been enriched with support from volunteers and community members. So too has the vibrant array of workshops and classes on offer which include crafty conversations, making dumplings, art therapy and working in the vegetable garden. Continuing the work it has been doing for over 30 years the Women’s Centre Rodney also managed to grow and build new programs and welcome many new women to their whanau in 2023. With a warm and bright start to this year, the Women’s Centre will continue to grow and respond to being a positive part of the lives of women in the community. www.WomensCentreRodney.org.nz www.facebook.com/WomensCentreRodney

Revved up with creativity – Chris Watson The driving force behind Tofu Auto Works in Kaiwaka, owner Chris Watson, discusses his latest winning creation and plans for the future.

Tell us about your background. How did you get started in the industry? I've always been interested in cars and so knew from an early age that my life was going to revolve around them in some form. I went to school planning on becoming a mechanic, so studied mechanical engineering at university as well as doing a few years in trade in the panel beating and spray painting industry. Eventually I figured out that what I was really passionate about was design and automotive composites. Growing up in New Zealand we always had limited availability when it came to automotive parts, especially exterior parts like aftermarket body panels. A lot of the time the only option was to buy cheap knock-off kits from local companies that steal designs from well-known brands overseas, then charge ridiculous prices for them. This never really sat right with me, so I started my business to fill this void and offer bespoke parts or original designs to kiwis that are 100% designed and made right here, while charging a reasonable price for them to try and keep the barrier for entry as low as possible.

What sets you apart from others in the industry? Before I started designing cars and body kits I actually had a background in art and graphic design. So my approach to vehicles is much closer to treating them like a canvas rather than most people in the industry who tend to focus on performance aspects. I think it's important to have both sides of the coin rather than everyone just focussing on the same thing.

What does Tofu Auto Works specialise in? Early on I did a bit of everything but these days I almost exclusively work with composites; making either fibreglass or carbon fibre parts for vehicles or just any strange little project that people have. These days most of my time goes into designing and testing new body kits that I then make moulds of to reproduce and sell around the world. However, when I have time I still like to take odd jobs to break up my larger projects - things like modifying a set of flares, remaking somebody a dashboard out of carbon fibre, or general fibreglass repairs.

What does a typical day look like for you? One thing I never anticipated when I started my career was the involvement of social media, particularly video platforms like YouTube. A couple of years ago I started filming my work and posting quick, un-narrated videos to try and share the knowledge and grow my business. But in the last two years my channel has gained over 140,000 subscribers and making videos has become a much larger part of my day. A typical day for me generally involves a few hours of computer administration, followed by a full day of work, usually filming the entire process, and then in the evening I spend a further few hours compiling and editing the footage from the day. Because

of this I'm left with very little time to work on other projects or jobs and have a waiting list of around a year for a large job; smaller jobs I always try to find the time to fit in on the side when I can.

Tell us about a memorable project you've worked on. My favourite projects are always my most recent ones or the ones that I'm planning for the future. I think it's important to keep pushing yourself and always work just outside your comfort zone. One of my latest and most well known builds is my cyberpunk themed Mazda Mx5 nicknamed ‘The Chimera’. In essence it’s a movie prop car that I've been building to look like it's set in some dystopian future - a cross between Blade Runner and Mad Max. This design recently won the Hot Wheels Legends global competition, beating entries from all over the world and judged by all sorts of automotive industry leaders. It’s a real honour and my design will now be made as a 1:64th scale Hot Wheels diecast, available to buy at any Warehouse store!

What’s next for Tofu Auto Works and what’s with the name? The nickname 'Tofu' actually comes from my name Christopher becoming ‘Christofu’ and eventually just Tofu. It started due to my interest in Asian culture, specifically Japanese culture, throughout my life. It’s always been a dream of mine to move to Japan so that’s in the pipeline in the next few years. I have a few collaborations with other builders and designers from overseas and then I intend to buy a workshop in Japan. I’ll be keeping up my social accounts so please follow my journey there! www.instagram.com/TofuAutoworks www.youtube.com/@TofuAutoWorks

Meet the team

As we celebrate the remarkable milestone of our 100th issue I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible journey Junction Magazine has undertaken over the past 8 years. From the local heroes and businesses we profile each month, the Junction Awards and Local Friday, to winning the Best Regional Magazine Award. None of this would be possible without the continued support from our community, readers, advertisers and followers; thank you for your unwavering support and being an integral part of our journey. Creating Junction Magazine has been a lifelong dream that would not be possible without our talented staff and contributors. Their dedication ensures the high-quality Junction is now recognised and awarded for. I am truly grateful for the contribution and inspiration they bring to Junction.

Susannah Marshall Art Director + Designer

Nikita Oliver Metcalfe Deputy Editor

In the past I would always seek out the latest issue of Junction Magazine when visiting the area; I loved learning about the many talented locals, new local businesses and unique events taking place. Having recently become a local myself I still find Junction such an inspiring read, but now I also have the privilege of being involved in creating the magazine I’ve appreciated for so long. The way Junction creates, promotes and celebrates community is something truly special for our region.

I love everything about Junction Magazine and feel lucky to have the job that I do. Working with such talented people within our direct team, as well as our many contributors, who all help make Junction the popular magazine it is today. I have so many fond memories across the years. One thing I will never tire of is seeing people in the community read our magazine each month. It's a special feeling to know your work is bringing people joy.

Contributing Writer

My first article for Junction appeared in Issue 3, January 2016. It’s been a pleasure to be a contributing writer for the last eight years. It’s amazing how many interesting people are doing interesting things in our community, and I feel privileged to have met so many of them through writing for Junction.

Mel Johnstone

When I first moved to the Matakana region, Junction Magazine quickly became my go-to guide for all things local. Now, as a writer for this brilliant publication, I feel so privileged to interview the many talented, creative and passionate individuals who proudly call this community home. Their endeavours undeniably enrich the region, and thanks to Junction, their stories get the spotlight they truly deserve.

The cover shoot by the pool was simply amazing (Issue 64). Local models from around Warkworth, Matakana, and surrounding areas looked gorgeous in their outfits. This is one of several shoots I’ve been involved in and all have left me with such wonderful memories. Junction has brought so many people together over the last 100 issues and it's been such a pleasure to help bring some of it to life for Bianca and her amazing talented team.

The first time I saw Junction I knew I wanted to be involved in the production of this fantastic magazine. After talking with Bianca about how Great Days could help and work alongside the Junction team, our working relationship took off. We produce and distribute Junction Magazine and I love every part of working with the amazing team and producing with pride such a beautiful magazine. The reward is certainly felt when I deliver copies hot off the press each month to excited distribution locations. I love interacting with the communities and talking about the current edition of the magazine and sharing in the feeling of sheer joy this beautiful magazine brings to us all.

My favourite cover shot features local Wendy Douglas on a tractor; wearing a tangerine top and afro, arms flung wide (Issue 3). The cover encapsulates what this area is all about; people with diverse backgrounds embracing a rural lifestyle, often with a side-order of fabulous. I’m constantly amazed by the creative innovation our locals bring, and it's great that Junction can showcase it.

My favourite memory shooting cover images for Junction is definitely the gorgeous Murphy the rescue dog photoshoot (Issue 93). What a star he was for us, so playful, sweet and of course finally sleepy. Junction is an amazing part of our lovely community and I'm so grateful to have worked with the team over the last five years.

Kelsi's culinary journey Recipe developer and entrepreneur, Kelsi Boocock, is back with her second cookbook. Inspired by her travels around the world, Healthy Kelsi Travel Kitchen, is set to influence a global menu in your home. P h o t o s Ta s h M e y e r s

Since starting Healthy Kelsi back in 2020 due to delayed travel plans, Kelsi has grown her collective social media following to over 315,000 followers, created a wellness app, published a best-selling cookbook, launched a protein powder and earned a diploma in plant-based culinary arts from cooking school, Le Cordon Bleu, in London. What started out as an Instagram account sharing plant-based recipes, wellness tips and her wholesome life in Mangawhai has become something much more! Kelsi’s second book, Healthy Kelsi Travel Kitchen, was released in December. Full of quick and easy plant-based recipes inspired from her travels around the world to exotic destinations such as Bali, Morocco, Italy, Turkey, Thailand and Japan, it’s packed with

colour, flavour and texture; making plantbased eating fun, delicious and fuss free. Offering delicious recipes but also incredible travel photography, Kelsi hopes, after a long period of people not being able to go anywhere, this cookbook will inspire readers’ creativity in the kitchen and a desire to eat healthier, and also to explore the world around them and go on a few adventures of their own. Drawing from the flavours of each city she visited, on what she’s calling a foodie’s dream trip, Kesli explored markets, learnt tips from local chefs and street food vendors, and fully indulged her passion for flavourful plant based food; bringing to you the best of what she discovered.

Including plenty of gluten and nut-free recipes, you'll find dozens of wholesome whole food dishes for every occasion that will fill you up and keep you sustained. Recipes cover everything from easy morning smoothies and portable lunches to irresistible snacks and meals for leisurely weekend brunches and family dinners. With both sweet and savoury meals, all of which are bursting with flavour, being healthy has never tasted so good. Baked Cheesecake Celebrate with us and indulge in the visually stunning and absolutely delicious baked cheesecake that graces the cover of our 100th issue! R e c i p e b y H e a l t h y K e l s i f r o m h e r n e w b o o k Tr av e l K i t c h e n

INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

Base

• • • • •

2 cups gluten-free oats 1 cup almond meal 1⁄2t salt 1⁄3 cup coconut oil, melted

3T coconut sugar

Filling • • • • •

300g silken tofu 300g plant-based cream cheese 3T cornflour 3⁄4 cup agave or brown rice syrup Zest of 1 lemon

Topping • •

Fresh berries Edible flowers (optional)

Preheat oven to 180°C and line a 20cm cake tin with baking paper. Add the oats to a blender or food processor and blend until it turns to a flour. Add in the almond meal, salt, coconut oil and coconut sugar. Pulse to combine. Tip into the lined cake tin and press down firmly. Poke a few holes in the base with a fork and bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside. (Keep the oven on 180°C for baking the cheesecake.) Make the filling by adding all of the ingredients to a blender or food processor and blending until completely smooth. Pour over the base and spread evenly. Place in the oven for 50 minutes until golden on top (don’t worry if it’s still runny in the middle). Put the cheesecake straight into the fridge for an hour to set and cool completely. Top with fresh berries and edible flowers if desired.

Mindful coaching Warkworth local, Bree Nicholls, founder of The Being Way, offers a blend of counselling, psychotherapy, and mindfulness practices through her unique coaching framework. Bree works one-on-one with clients, holds regular group sessions, and trains people to become certified in The Being Way Method. She has a Bachelor of Counselling, is a certified and accredited ICF Coach and meditates daily. Wo rd s Mi l ly No l a n | P h o t o s Mi c h e l l e Ho l t

What is The Being Way? The Being Way is a style of coaching that blends coaching and therapeutic techniques. My colleague Katharina and I work oneon-one with clients, and I run regular groups and train people to become certified in The Being Way Method.

What led you to found The Being Way? I started out in counselling as I wanted to get a thorough understanding of how to work with people safely. After I graduated with a Bachelor of Counselling I worked as a counsellor in a private practice and for Youthline and Epsom Girls Grammar School. Something wasn't feeling aligned in my work, so I pursued the corporate world instead, however, after five years, I returned to therapeutic work and set up a coaching practice. After gaining my certification in transformative coaching, I started incorporating the counselling techniques I had been trained in, and hence The Being Way Method was born.

Are there any life lessons that have helped you be where you are today? In my younger days, I gained confidence by throwing myself in the deep end and saying yes to things that both scared and excited me. This has helped with the confidence needed in running a business. Experiencing several significant losses in my life has taught me that loss is an inevitable part of living. It's grown my understanding of grief, and how to hold space for others in similar circumstances. Going through stressful times has led me to more internal growth. I have found that the bigger the discomfort, the bigger the growth - provided I put the work in, and this growth impacts on the way I work with clients.

Why would someone benefit from coaching? It is a different conversation than one you would have with a friend or a partner. Having a professional space just for you that is unbiased creates safety and supports people to explore what is right and resonant for them.

What can a client expect from a one-on-one session, and what outcomes may be achieved? Coaching mostly takes place online. In the first session, we (the coach) work on creating a safe environment while the client shares the background of what has brought them here and what they are wanting. After listening to the person's experience, we ask questions that expand their awareness of themselves and the issue, until new realisations come to the surface. The process helps people get clarity on their next steps. The client then decides how they want to proceed. Usually, we work with clients weekly until they are ready to reduce. I find that the internal metamorphosis of a client feeds into other areas of their lives. Outcomes that we see are: aligned decision-making, increased self-worth and life satisfaction, healthy communication and boundarysetting, fulfilling relationships, and career and salary advancements.

What daily motto do you live by? Live with your heart open.

Best advice you have ever received? I found this piece of writing years ago, and the words still reach me in the same way. “Love the battlefield of life, for joy is always breathing secretly and openly in both your victory and your defeat,” - Sri Chimnoy. www.TheBeingWay.co | www.instagram.com/TheBeingWay.Co

A journey of grounding and growth Coaching and mentoring women since 2015, Bridget Paddon’s ever-evolving body of work and services exist to serve women who are seeking a more spacious, aligned and grounded version of their lives and businesses. Photos Koa Photography + Ses & Jen

In 2019, Bridget, along with her partner Arlo and their huntaway Nami, traded the sheepfilled landscapes of Southland for the coastal allure of Mangawhai. Packing their cars to the brim they drove the length of the country to begin a new chapter of their lives. The couple have found solace in the vibrant community, pristine beaches, and abundance of top quality local produce; and they don’t miss scraping ice off their windscreens with

an eftpos card in winter! As parents to an energetic son, they are thrilled to be raising their family amidst the natural splendour of Mangawhai and Northland. Recognising the lasting effects of the last four years - struggles of disconnection, self-doubt, and comparison - Bridget guides her clients toward a more aligned and grounded life. Online coaching sessions provide a personalised approach,

helping women shed what no longer serves them and build strong foundations that foster presence, flow, and alignment. As a mother herself, Bridget now balances her coaching practice with the joys of parenting. Working two days a week from home, she brings a unique understanding to support those clients who are also on their journey through motherhood. “Being mama to our darling boy brings me an overflow

Inclusive vision, timeless threads Sustainable fashion brand, Remnants, founded by Kayla McGregor, comes from humble beginnings of selling second-hand and vintage clothing via Instagram to help pay her rent. Fast forward to what it is today - a brand that encapsulates the pillars it has been built around; Kayla’s passion for the environment, inclusivity and accessibility.

The name Remnants bears reference to ‘what remains’, an idea that can be applied to the vintage clothing Kayla re-sells, the dead stock and secondhand fabrics she uses, and the remains of our environment today. Alongside this reference Kayla uses her clothing to tell stories and create nostalgia. Popular themes include the tale of her parents' love story in 1970s Aotearoa, a stance against societal norms when it came to ‘being a girl’ and more recently, grief and healing through connections with nature. All of which are told by the use of bold colours, curved silhouettes and how you feel when you put a garment on. Whether it’s a poofy dress that makes you feel like a princess and heals your inner child, or a warm jumper made from vintage blankets that reminds you of a certain time, place or person; Kayla's designs reflect her uniquely bold and bright personality and her strong belief that fashion does not have to conform to traditional beauty standards and can be worn anywhere, any time, by anyone. Remnants offers a range of preloved and vintage clothing plus a New Zealand made

collection which includes one-of-a-kind and made-to-order pieces created using dead stock fabrics. Within this, Remnants also offers custom sizing and other customisations, meaning garments are made especially for you; made possible by having each piece made locally. These options are a clear indication of Remnants foundations of inclusivity and accessibility. Since her very first Instagram post five years ago as Remnants, Kayla has gone on to open multiple pop-up stores across Auckland, collaborate with and support local brands and create a loving community online. She has recently moved to the Matakana area following her pursuit of healing through connections with nature; setting her sights on a new store location as her bold and colourful coastal aesthetic roared inside her.

The baking yogi It was the prospect of adventure and new experience that brought an English girl to the southern hemisphere.

Lauren, with a gymnastic and dance background, has always loved moving the body. Missing movement in her life and never finding joy at the gym, she discovered vinyasa yoga, an exercise that felt fun, strong and kept her flexible. It wasn't until Lauren started experiencing intense anxiety that she turned to the yoga studio once again, this time for her mental health. After noticing an unbelievable shift in her overall wellbeing, this daily habit quickly became something Lauren couldn't live without. She was hooked and her need for knowledge grew. This desire led her to become a teacher, learning from some of Melbourne's finest who she now counts as friends and mentors. Once qualified, Lauren began holding regular classes in Melbourne almost immediately. Her classes quickly began to fill and Lauren realised that helping people manage their mental and physical health was something that felt natural to her. Moving to Mangawhai in 2020 with her young family, Lauren started sharing her classes on Instagram, which quickly began to gain a little following. It was then that she decided to share her practice in person with the Mangawhai community, building amongst it her own little vinyasa community. After the arrival of her second son, Lauren found it essential to reassess and adjust her own practice. Finding less time for movement meant more meditation and journaling alongside learning how to bake sourdough bread to keep her mind calm; and so the ‘Yogi Baker’ was born! Lauren offers weekly classes locally, indoors and outdoors. She believes feeling the elements on your skin, connecting with nature and breathing fresh air deep into your lungs creates a full mind, body, spirit experience. Vinyasa to Vino events are being held over summer at BrookeLane Vineyard, bringing a social and fun element to yoga. Lauren also offers mentoring and private classes alongside selling her beautiful sourdough bread. Get in touch for class bookings, general enquiries and sourdough orders. www.instagram.com/LaurenCrockerYoga | 027 378 5264

“Losing my corporate training business after the Global Financial Crisis, then my online coaching business due to Covid, was tricky, but builds resilience,” Janice says. After her first business loss, Janice committed to an idea she’d had for twenty years and began writing an interactive movie. “I had to believe in myself the whole journey,” she says. Travelling, working part-time, and writing, after ten-plus years of hard grind and her second business loss, she finished it. The movie’s goal - to entertain but also empower women globally via a fun, feel-good movie. Aimed at the same target market as Wonder Woman and Barbie, her producer is yet to arrive. Meanwhile, she has submitted seven books to a publisher that intertwine with the movie. With quizzes on a phone app and sing-along choruses, this is a new concept for the screens. “I’ve got the script done, the books coming and the rest stored in my head, ready,” Janice says. Aimed at filming in the area, the movie has several local scenes and Janice hopes it will bring more tourists with its production. While all of these endeavours are underway, Janice is creating events that align with her movie and book. Using a different model from her training business, she is collaborating with One Mahurangi members and locals to create fun learning events aimed at inspiring and empowering those who attend. Attitude Events have a number of opportunities for you to get involved in the coming month. Join a treasure mapping event with a wine at The Bridgehouse on Wednesday 7 February or opt to participate with a coffee at The Secret Café on Saturday 10 February. Plus stay tuned for workshops coming soon to Warkworth that cover topics such as women's empowerment and dealing with difficult people. Further details of all Attitude Events can be found on Facebook. Janice still speaks on soft skills for business, motivation, and coaches. Her most popular Difficult People workshop is being reinstated to help provide these vital skills of empowerment. 021 645 511 | janice@AttitudeSpecialist.co.nz

Daniel has spent the last 15 years in Auckland training and competing in Muay Thai and kickboxing. He recently made the move back to his hometown to fulfil a passion and start his own business, opening Connect Striking, a gym he wishes he’d had access to when growing up in the area. Situated at the Mahurangi East Shopping Centre, the 150 square metre gym has martial arts mats covering the floor, a variety of fairtex boxing bags, thai pads, skipping ropes, an office, a stocked fridge, a growing strength and conditioning area with squat rack, smith machine and assault bike, fans,

Built by Mangawhai-based builders, Green Build Projects and designed by Perry Architecture + Design, The Kokopu Lane project brief was for a refined, clean, robust dwelling. Design considerations included maximising the small building platform and elevated views towards Mangawhai Heads and Hen and Chicken Islands. Sheltered outdoor living spaces have been created around the dwelling which gives options depending on wind direction. The sleeping spaces are positioned to be calm and private, while the kitchen and living space maximise the rural and sea views. The resulting efficient plan and building size feels light and comfortable, a great place to relax. www.greenbuildprojects.co.nz Instagram: @greenbuildprojects

Back to school with The Simple Healthy Delicious Life

Raspberry compote

Feeding people is Sofia’s job and also her passion. After having children she realised how crucial our role as caregivers is, and her focus quickly went to creating nutritious meals that were also quick to make and enjoyable for the kids. Wo rd s S of í a G a l l a rd o

Swap commercial yoghurt pots for a reusable food pouch with dairy or non dairy yoghurt in it topped with this compote. Use any type of fruit you like (in season or frozen) and adjust amounts of sugar according to fruit sweetness. INGREDIENTS:

Lunchboxes are an important part of the daily food intake that school age children require.

1 pack (450g) frozen raspberries

1 orange, juice and finely grated zest

Five times a week, every week of the school year, we have to think of options to fill their tummies while they expand their knowledge. For every caregiver time is scarce and precious, making store bought options great for speed and efficiency. But, being the person who checks the charts at the back of the packaging at the supermarket, Sofia was not surprised to see that almost all snacks, bars, cereals and food marketed for children were full of sugars, additives and flavourings.

1/3 cup raw sugar or coconut sugar or brown rice syrup or maple syrup or honey (if using honey, reduce amount to 1/4 cup as it is sweeter than the rest)

2T chia seeds

This prompted her to make as much as she could of what goes into her children’s lunchboxes.

INSTRUCTIONS:

And she encourages you to do so too, because, yes, life is busy, but good food equals a healthy and happy kid; and what better legacy can you give them than health.

Add frozen raspberries, sugar (or sweetener of choice) and orange juice and zest to a saucepan on medium heat.

When it reaches boiling point, reduce heat and stir occasionally until raspberries are soft and cooked (10 to 12 minutes).

Once done, remove from the heat and stir in chia seeds making sure they are all mixed with the juices. This will help to thicken the compote. Blend using a stick blender or leave chunky.

Transfer to a glass jar, letting it cool before storing in the fridge for up to a week. Or freeze in ice cube moulds.

Healthy homemade lunchboxes don't have to be boring or time consuming to make. Here are Sofia’s tips to start the new school year ticking all the (lunch) boxes: healthy, easy and yummy!

Educate kids about healthy choices.

Keep it simple.

Leftovers are your friend.

Make it colourful.

Prepare ahead of time.

Don't be too strict, give kids the freedom to have occasional treats.

Use fruit and vegetables that are in season.

Read the labels; there are some good options out there, just look past the colourful packets and remember if it's too cheap it’s probably not real food.

Involve kids in the planning, grocery shopping or cooking; they’ll be more invested in trying new foods.

Be a role model; if your kids see you eating it they’re more likely to give it a go.

Monochrome mastery Philippa Murray-Aynsley, better known as Pip, lives with her husband in Mangawhai Heads and is a self taught photorealism portrait artist working in black and white oils.

Interest in art runs in the family as Pip’s mother, two sisters and paternal grandmother have all painted in various mediums. Dabbling in sculpture and pottery over time plus colour still-life paintings for a couple of years, Pip fell in love with working in black and white when she started painting portraits four years ago; firstly in acrylics then moving to alkyd oils. “[The oils] are lovely to work with and have a great blending ability with the added advantage of being quick drying,” says Pip.

46

LIFESTYLE

The decision to work in black and white stems from Pip’s feeling that it captures the real personality of the subject and enables her to create more depth within the painting. Pip paints people and animals on relatively small to quite large canvas, working on commission and from emailed photos. With each portrait taking approximately three weeks to complete, her favourite part is working on all the fine detail. “I always start with the eyes as that brings the subject to life and the more I progress the more I get

to know them. I often talk to them as I paint,” reflects Pip. Among her recent recognitions are receiving the People’s Choice Award for her entry into The Mangawhai Art Society Exhibition in 2020, and at the Kaipara Art Awards she was awarded runner up for 2D painting in 2021 plus the People’s Choice award for the same work. Pip also received the Kaipara Art Awards People’s Choice Award in 2022 for another of her portraits.

Reflecting on the nature of her work Pip notes that portraiture often means working with images of people or pets that have passed; making her process an emotional and stressful one as the importance that the portrait is painted as close as possible to the provided image is heightened. Despite this Pip appreciates the special and treasured memories these portraits always hold for the person commissioning the work. In Pip’s opinion the best portraits are the ones that are not posed; quick, casual photos often portray a look or angle that shows the real individual, and painting two people together means amazing interactions between the two can be captured. “Remember these paintings hang on your wall and you want to be able to see that personality jump out at you for years to come,” says Pip. “This can make the difference between just a photo image or an artwork.” For Pip painting is all-encompassing, she loses track of time when she’s painting and enjoys reproducing that moment in time that is so special to the receiver. www.facebook.com/PMAPortraits PMAPortraits@gmail.com

Brushstrokes of life Having recently relocated to reside in the heart of Matakana, meet the artist with a palette that echoes a life richly lived.

Jane Pierce, a seasoned painter of over 30 years, is a storyteller whose canvas unfolds the chapters of her remarkable journey. Having honed her craft at the prestigious Elam School of Fine Arts, Jane embarked on an adventure to Japan, where the vibrant tapestry of this enchanting country left an indelible mark on her artistic soul. After a decade-long stint in Japan, Jane returned home, her spirit brimming with fresh inspiration. A recent trip to visit her son became the catalyst for a new chapter in her artistic repertoire. Jane, translating her experiences onto canvas, created breathtaking works that encapsulate the essence of her adventures, capturing the allure of monochromatic blossoms and referencing traditional Japanese culture. Throughout the years, Jane's artistic evolution has mirrored the chapters of her life. For many years her creations exuded bold and expressive figurative elements, and now, as she embraces a new phase in life, so

48

too does her art transform. A recent revival of fashion-centric pieces reflects the huge role that fashion, both in its physical and graphic forms, has played in Jane’s art. Ranging from timeless vintage illustrations to pop art style street scenes, fashion adds a dynamic layer to her portfolio. For Jane, art is not merely a visual spectacle; it's a journey of introspection and meditation. Her recent move to Matakana has injected a renewed sense of vitality into her life, sparking a rediscovery of self through her artistic expressions. A recent small exhibition with her father Bill Harris – an esteemed architect and artist – became a poignant celebration, a tangible marker of Jane's rekindled artistic journey.

Abstract mastery in immersive canvases Having just completed his fourth successful exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, Roland Seibertz’s colours and shapes make people stop, make them look and feel uplifted.

Working from his studio in Waitoki, Roland Seibertz has always endeavoured to paint in the abstract form, where the fewer the ‘indications’, the better the result; knowing that when colour and shape harmonise well he has created a successful painting. People are attracted because, somehow, the colours speak to them. His works are soothing and relaxing both to the viewer and to Roland as the artist. That really is the point of them.

it; it’s high energy and concentrated. The paintings are large, ranging from 1.2 metres square to almost 3 metres by 2 metres. The size of the canvases, stretched over wooden frames, is part of capturing the feeling of the landscape. When Roland is outside in a landscape, he is surrounded and immersed by it, and his paintings are similar. The canvas becomes the landscape, and the viewer and artist are immersed and surrounded.

The abstract nature of his work gives him freedom, he eschews the limitations of a photo image or indication; rather he is creating abstracted versions of an interesting viewpoint. Roland doesn’t enter his studio intending to create a restful painting, that’s not what he is trying to achieve. He wants to interpret what he has seen and knows his colours will always reflect that evocative quality. Roland loves it when there is mystery or an inquisitiveness to look at in his paintings, as that’s what he is seeking to introduce.

Requiring a lot of energy, Roland has to work quickly using large brushes; the physical energy he uses to create transfers to energy within the painting. Using a mix of paints he is particularly fond of waterbased polymer – a plastic that mixes well with different oils. He paints very thin layers, often glaze-like, which suits his type of painting and creates the kind of elusive abstract landscapes he has become known for.

While his works are universally soothing and restful, the creation of the work is far from

Roland is inspired by the idea that there is an inner summer in all of us. It rings true for him, and his paintings reflect that joy. “There is a reservoir of light I seem

to tap into when I paint. I need to fill this reservoir. On bright days I don’t wear sunglasses, I love the light to pour back into me, clear and unshaded,” says Roland. Roland refers to the great Irish poet and philosopher John O’Donohue (1 January, 1956–4 January, 2008), with this passage one of great inspiration to him: “There is a quiet light that shines in every heart. It draws no attention to itself, though it is always secretly there. It is what illuminates our minds to see beauty, our desire to seek possibility, and our hearts to love life. Without this subtle quickening our days would be empty and wearisome, and no horizon would ever awaken our longing. Our passion for life is quietly sustained from somewhere in us that is wedded to the energy and excitement of life. This shy inner light is what enables us to recognise and receive our very presence here as a blessing.” www.RolandSeibertz.art | 027 444 4560

Gardening calendar This month there is sure to be something extra, whether it's beans, tomatoes, eggplants, capsicums or cucumbers. What a good time to dust off the preserving pans and get out your favourite recipes. It is particularly gratifying, and an honour to your garden, to be able to utilise all the less than perfect or excess produce. It all tastes great in the jar! Wo rd s G e of f L e d b r o o k

Honey bees and bumblebees are an essential component of a garden. Whilst most of you will not be able to keep honey bees yourself there is much you can do to attract them into your garden. A honey bee can travel up to 10 kilometres from its hive. If it likes what is on offer it will tell other bees at the hive to make the trip as well. A bumblebee stays local and nests in small groups in the earth. Bumblebees are nature's hardest workers. You will see them out and about from first light to dusk. They are particularly valuable as pollinators for crops like tomatoes. Both types of bees feed on pollen and nectar. Pollination is a side effect of them moving from flower to flower.

• • • •

There are several things you can do to help bees. Foremost, plant lots of flowering plants including annuals, perennials and natives. Simple annual flowers like calendula, cosmos, nasturtiums, flowering herbs like lavender or rosemary, borage and thyme as well as many native species are all favourites of bees. They very much need a variety of flowers to sustain them throughout the year.

• • •

• •

Tamarillos are quick growing subtropical trees that bear abundant crops in the second year from planting. Tamarillos produce fruit ready to harvest over the winter months from May to August. You will find big, ready to plant seedlings at most garden centres. However, if you are not in a hurry, tamarillos are easy and cheap to grow from seed. Sow seeds now for a plant ready to go into the soil late spring.

• • •

Tamarillos like to grow in a moderately fertile soil with good drainage and respond well to heavy mulching. Plant them in a sheltered position not prone to winter frosts. When planting, dig a generous hole at least twice as deep and wide as the root ball. Use plenty of compost if you can.

Last, but not least, use no chemicals, particularly pesticides in your garden. Some chemicals are harder on bees than others, but the best approach is to use none. That will have benefits for you and your family as well as the bees.

Also important is easy access to a water source. Use a shallow dish or bird bath with stones in it for the bees to land on and drink. This will keep them strong and happy.

Simple Fresh Peach Cobbler Indulge in the sweet simplicity of a classic peach cobbler, a timeless dessert that captures the essence of summer in every bite. This easy-to-follow recipe celebrates the natural sweetness of fresh peaches, creating a warm and comforting treat that's perfect for any occasion.

INGREDIENTS: For the Filling: •

4-5 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced

1T lemon juice

• •

1/2 cup granulated sugar 1T vanilla extract

For the Cobbler Topping: •

1 cup all-purpose flour

1t baking powder

• • • •

Peaches A peach tree in your home garden will reward you with ripefrom-the-tree fruit that is hard to match, except maybe from a roadside stall. Peaches grow best in a sunny low humidity climate, think Central Otago or Hawkes Bay. Having said that, with careful siting you can grow peaches in our area. Choose a low chill requirement variety for best results. Also consider whether a dwarf or standard variety will work best for your garden. A dwarf variety will grow to 1.5 metres tall and can be grown in a big container if needed. A standard variety will grow to 4 metres tall. Whatever variety you choose, plant in a sunny aspect with well drained, fertile soil. A good option is to plant a bare rooted tree in winter. Prune the branches back by one third when you plant. If I had to pick two varieties for my garden it would be Blackboy and Golden Queen. Both of these varieties are self fertile and have a low chill requirement. Blackboy is a fabulous peach with a rich purpled colour and heaps of flavour. Golden Queen is the old favourite most of us are familiar with. Consider planting a new tree every four or five years as you can get unexpected deaths. It is best to have an insurance policy and keep the fruit flowing!

1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4t salt

1/2 cup butter, melted 1/4 cup milk

INSTRUCTIONS: •

Preheat oven to 190 degrees celsius.

Peel and slice fresh peaches, and place them in a mixing bowl. Add sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract to the peaches. Gently toss to coat, allowing the flavours to meld.

Transfer the peach mixture to a greased 23cm baking dish, spreading it evenly.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Pour in melted butter and milk. Stir until just combined to form a thick batter.

Spoon the cobbler topping over the peaches, covering them as evenly as possible.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the peach filling is bubbly.

Allow the peach cobbler to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, either on its own or topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra decadent touch.

We built a house and ended up with a village What started as a quest for barefoot living culminated in the creation of Songbird Villa and Cottage - a breathtaking utopia in Matheson Bay that not only showcases stunning sea views but also exemplifies the warmth and generosity of the magical community in Leigh. When a new property appears on the horizon, people ask, ‘how did the house build go?’, to which the reply is often, ‘oh you know, ups and downs, touch and go, but we’re in now and that’s a relief’. What a short summing up of something so momentous in one’s life. It’s almost as if talking about the stress, the level of superpower endurance required, and the tears of despair, can’t really be expressed or talked about. When asked if they would do it all again, the response comes so rapidly, that you can almost feel the fear that goes with it, ‘No!’. Adam and Katherine emigrated from the UK in 2016 for a sunnier, healthier, more liberating lifestyle. Barefoot living and a beach down the road tugged on their parental heartstrings to ensure their then three year old daughter would have a carefree and happy childhood. So, they gathered up their two dogs and two cats to embark on a seven year adventure that has resulted in the creation of a stunning utopia, named Songbird. Ask them if they would do it all again and the answer is surprisingly, yes. When asked why, Katherine sums it up easily, “we came to New Zealand without any family or friends. Having built a lifestyle property in Matheson Bay, we now have everything to call this place home. Building from the ground up takes courage, skills and money (more money than you expect!), but it also takes good people. We employed locals wherever we could, from the builder, electrician, plumber, painter, landscaper and everyone in between, and in doing so we started to create our new friends and family. Matheson Bay in Leigh is a magical community with a generosity of heart and kindness that can be felt in all that the property is and represents. We didn’t just build a house, we ended up with a village.” Leaving is heart-breaking, but a new project calls and the Wooler’s are hoping this extraordinary property will capture the hearts of new custodians, not only with the stunning sea views from Songbird Villa and the idyllic Songbird Cottage in its own private valley and landscaped gardens, but also the welcoming community that exists right on its doorstep. www.Bayleys.co.nz/1170283 | Victoria Turner 021 795 099

A visionary trail Transcending far beyond a simple trail, we sat down with Meg Eriksen, Fundraising and Marketing Manager for The Matakana Coast Trail Trust, to give us an update on where things stand for this ambitious and inspiring project.

What is the vision behind The Matakana Coast Trail Trust and its significance to the local community? The Matakana Coast Trail Trust (MCTT) envisions creating a trail that showcases the beauty of our region, that connects people with nature, encourages outdoor activities, and fosters a sense of community pride. It's about preserving our environment while providing a space for locals and visitors to explore and enjoy our stunning coastal region. The trail will bring tremendous benefits to our community. It will connect our communities in the face of rapid urbanisation, and keep our children safe and healthy. Economically, it is estimated we will see $96 million of additional consumer spend, likely in tourism infrastructure, accommodation and hospitality industry throughout the wider region.

What challenges have you faced in garnering support for the project? The community support for this project is phenomenal and we have full endorsement from the local board and governing bodies. The biggest challenge that we face is securing funding from the public purse in this current economic climate. We are optimistic that the change in government will help our cause, but we understand we need to be patient and persistent.

Can you provide updates on the trail development? We're thrilled to share that we're making significant strides in the trail development. This summer marks the beginning of construction in two key areas: • Grange Street to Muncaster Road (Snells Beach) - This is approximately 350 metres in length and involves the establishment of trail surface, boardwalks, culverts, fences and a bridge. The entire project has been executed on a shoestring budget with amazing community support. We are very grateful to Matakana ITM for supplying the bridge materials and Hutchinson Consulting for all the Engineering requirements. • Matakana Country Park - Whilst we don't have the funding to build the entire 2.2 kilometre stretch from Point Wells to The Country Park, we have secured a grant that allows us to start construction within the Country Park boundary, which is approximately 300 metres of trail.

It's not every day that a local project partners with a renowned agency like Saatchi and Saatchi. Can you share more about this collaboration and what it means for the Matakana Coast Trail? Partnering with Saatchi and Saatchi is like having a creative powerhouse join our trail family. They're helping us on a pro bono basis to give the MCTT a fresh new look and feel. It's not just about creating a logo – it's capturing the spirit of our community, the essence of the trail, and telling its unique story to a wider audience. We can’t wait to reveal our fresh new look and identity, so stay tuned.

How can the local community get involved and contribute to the success of the Matakana Coast Trail? Well, if you have a million or two spare that would be super helpful! There are numerous ways for the community to get involved. We welcome volunteers for various tasks, from trail maintenance, construction, project management to event organisation. Individual donations, corporate sponsorships, or participating in our fundraising events. Every contribution, big or small, plays a vital role in bringing the Matakana Coast Trail to life. www.MCTT.org.nz | meg@MCTT.org.nz

Coming to live in the region has been a blessing for so many families, and starting Slow Water Sea Scouts has provided a safe place for its children to experience their environment safely. The group provides children with the opportunity to explore with vigour and learn new skills beyond their screens; not to mention encouraging good old fashioned values and fun.

Slow Water Sea Scouts The community in Puhoi, Ahuroa, Wenderholm and Waiwera is as diverse in its terrain as it is in its people. With beautiful hills and tributaries, beaches and a gentle river, there is much to admire, but it’s the people that set the area apart.

In the two years they have been in operation the kids have enjoyed camping, joining with other local troops to broaden their social ties, bush bashing at Swiss Farm, learning to fish for the first time and rowing a six person cutter together up the meandering Puhoi River. Other adventures cherished by the kids and leaders alike included, constructing rafts from local materials, making bush bivouacs and learning useful skills like how to be prepared in an emergency, first aid and how to tie more knots than you imagine! But most of all, everyone involved has oodles of fun – the Keas, Cubs and the amazing volunteer Leaders (thanks Mums and Dads). Currently there is space to grow and welcome new families to come and try it out for themselves. The first three sessions are free with no obligation to join, and the term fees are very reasonable after that. The families are genuine, friendly and supportive, not to mention inclusive. Slow Water Sea Scouts operate out of the Puhoi Sports & Community Club and are often seen out at Wenderholm, in the bush and on the river. Join them for adventures you and your kids will never forget! Head to their website below or get in touch with Group Leader Daniel directly.
