Bad hair day, said no one ever! Tabby Roux, founder of Scrunch Me hair accessories, gifts and more, is a lover of scrunchies herself. She started this ever growing little boutique business just a few months ago, thinking what's better than having a scrunchie or two and then getting to share that love for them with others.

Hospice shop comes to Mangawhai North Haven Hospice is excited to open their new charity shop in Mangawhai, mid-December. The region has long been supported by the generous communities of Whangārei and Waipu through their charity shops. North Haven Hospice provides care for people in these communities every day, supporting them through some very challenging times. The shop takes donated second-hand goods and from their sale, turns this into first class care. They are currently looking for volunteers to help run the shop through summer and welcome locals to contribute to the donation of goods. Contact Murray Annear 027 622 0991 or Guy Barton 027 222 0731 for more information. www.NorthHavenHospice.org.nz

With a variety of different scrunchies, hair accessories and more available, Tabby believes, as ladies, we can never have a bad hair day when we start the day off with one of her scrunchies. Find Tabby in the Maungaturoto/Mangawhai area, often doing markets and also via the Scrunch Me Facebook page. 022 383 0107

Let the spirit take you Tucked away on the shores of the sparkling Kaipara Harbour, are two ex-dairy farms that are in the process of being regenerated and repurposed into a biodiverse region with organic market gardens, native forest, a concert and festival venue, and an off-grid eco village. The project is being directed by Franko Heke, one of the team behind music and wellness festivals, NZ Spirit Festival and Resolution. Wo rd s L u ke Wi l l i a m s o n

After six years of steady growth and success, the festivals have found their spiritual homes at Ariki Estate and neighbouring property, Tūmanako. “I put together a bunch of friends I had met through running the festivals and bought Tūmanako two-and-a-half years ago,” says Franko. Work began on converting the 120-acre goat milking farm into a property of food plants and native forest. For Franko and the team, it's about healing the land and opening it back up to its natural purposes, and working with local iwi as well. Ngāti Whātua are big supporters of what they're doing, and representatives have blessed the land and helped open the festivals.

“The festivals are awesome little ecosystems, but they only last four days and I wanted to actually live this way,” explains Franko. “NZ Spirit creates such an amazing environment where everyone coexists with a feeling of trust, empathy and consistent safety. It gives me hope for humanity again.” While the early success of regenerating Tūmanako was pleasing, Franko found himself coveting the neighbouring property. “Every day, I was sitting on my yoga mat doing my practice and I could see the adjacent farm with its beautiful mountain, and I knew we needed that extra bit of land. It was calling to me,” he laughs. “We bought that farm with another group of friends and called it Ariki Estate.”

Ariki Estate will serve as car parking and camping space for the festivals, and Tūmanako will be where the festivities take place. “They complement each other beautifully,” says Franko. “Ariki has an incredible original native forest with a mountain, a spring, rockpools and little waterfalls.” The project has attracted the attention of Suzy Cameron, wife of director James Cameron. “Suzy has come on as executive producer of a documentary we are making called Regeneration,” says Franko. “It’s going to be shot for another year so we can show how we’ve come from nothing to something, and should be out worldwide at the end of 2024.”

The Apple Basket is a textile store that sells 100% cotton and linen fabrics, yarn (wool, alpaca, possum, linen and cotton yarns), embroidery threads and haberdashery. I run classes quilting/ patchwork, hand embroidery, dress making, textile gift card making, bag making, knitting, Pfaff sewing machine classes on site and we have a website with most items in the online store.

Having just added a Christchurch Spirit Festival to the program, Franko’s schedule is fairly full. “Three festivals a year is a massive undertaking,” says Franko. “But I love galvanising people and bringing them together in these incredible environments.” The next step in Franko’s big plan is to create a large retreat centre and holistic health clinic. There are also discussions around creating a marae and Māori education centre. However, the near future is all about preparing Ariki and Tūmanako for this summer’s festivals. “Kaipara Moana Trust gave us 20,000 trees and we’re really grateful to them. So we’re planting those, building composting toilets and doing general farm clean up. It’s massive, but we’ve got an amazing crew of people making it happen.” Franko is looking forward to seeing everyone at Resolution and NZ Spirit Festival. “Come and learn some things about yourself, take a workshop, celebrate with excellent Kiwi music, try the amazing food selection, and just connect with this beautiful environment.” www.NZSpirit.com | www.ArikiEstate.nz

Through the lens If you've flipped through magazines featuring the stunning landscapes of New Zealand's golf courses, chances are you've seen the work of Mangawhai resident Ricky Robinson. His work with golf courses throughout the country has earned him recognition as a leading figure in the world of golf course photography. Photos Ricky Robinson

Ricky, tell us about your work with the new golf course, Te Arai Links, where you are the resident photographer. What is it like capturing the beauty of what is now a top 100 golf course in the world? "For me, I'm incredibly lucky to have what I think is the best job on earth with Te Arai Links. I’m usually out photographing the courses very early in the mornings and late in the evenings so I often find myself with the course to myself, and with the combination of a world-class golf course and the views that the Te Arai beach provides - it’s super special. I use a combination of handheld cameras and drones when photographing golf courses, a drone really helps to showcase a different perspective and golf courses typically look great from a higher vantage point. It’s also a very weather dependent job, so I sometimes can wait hours for the right light or scene to unfold for just a matter of minutes before getting a particular photo - which only makes it a lot more rewarding once I get that shot.”

You’ve been involved in the golfing world for over 10 years now, starting out as a greenkeeper in Australia and then Canada before making the move to New Zealand. How has that shaped your golf course photography?

especially when the light falls across them, it can produce some beautiful shadowing.”

“Greenkeeping definitely helped my ‘eye’ for golf course photography. There are so many elements that go into a golf course, which I think has given me a good understanding of the intricate details, which inevitably reflects in the photos. Te Arai has a lot of great contours throughout the course which make for great framing elements in photos,

“It’s a very diverse job as some days I can be shooting content for leading golf brands all over the world, whether it be clothing or golf products, and then I could be photographing a golf course’s accommodation and doing more architecture style photos. As you can imagine in this day and age there is a huge need for online marketing content and to

I’ve been incredibly lucky to have now worked with a lot of New Zealand’s top golf courses and see my work on the cover of golf magazines which is always a humble and surreal feeling.” Your work throughout New Zealand has garnered attention from golf courses around the world, so what’s next? “I have some exciting overseas trips planned next year to photograph some great golf courses in the USA and Australia, however I’m really excited to continue working with Te Arai Links and also promoting golf travel and tourism here to New Zealand. There are so many amazing golfing locations from the smaller countryside courses right through to the best courses New Zealand has to offer. A win for your wallet and the earth with Sustainable Kaipara As the festive season hurtles towards us with the usual promises of excess and expense, this year we can stop and take a beat. Not only can we choose to have a Christmas that has a lower impact on the earth, but it can also be a less costly one. Often being mindful of our environmental impact at Christmas also results in saving money. Wo rd s S a ra h Bray

Christmas decorations Buying new decorations is costly and has a high impact in terms of resources used. It takes the shine off decorations when you consider that tinsel and baubles are non-recyclable and made from non-renewable materials, often only lasting one season. Get crafty and make your own or check out second hand options at your local opportunity stores.

Give the gift of experiences One of the most significant sources of holiday overspending is the exchange of traditional gifts. These often lead to a pile of items that might not be wanted or appreciated by the recipients. This year, consider giving the gift of experiences. Instead of physical objects, offer your loved ones memories they can cherish. Experience gifts can range from cooking classes and spa days to concert tickets and adventure activities. Not only are these presents often more memorable and meaningful, but they also save you from overspending on items that may end up collecting dust or in the landfill. Plus, planning experiences can be done within your budget, making it a wallet-friendly option.

Eco-friendly wrapping options The act of giving and receiving gifts during the holiday season often involves excessive wrapping paper and plastic bows. This year, you can choose a more sustainable and wallet-friendly option by using ecofriendly wrapping materials. Consider using reusable fabric gift wraps or bags, which can be used year after year. You can also opt for recycled or recyclable wrapping paper and compostable twine. This not only reduces waste but also saves you money by avoiding the need to purchase new wrapping materials each year. Add a twig or sprig of greenery and it adds a unique and thoughtful element to your gift. This year, create a memorable and relaxing celebration with thoughtful spending and earth conscious choices, leaving lasting memories rather than excessive consumption. www.SustainableKaipara.org

Crafting Christmas gifts from the heart and pantry With the holiday season just around the corner, many of us are seeking meaning ful and budgetfriendly gift ideas that are sustainable.

One innovative way to accomplish all of these goals is by creating Christmas gifts using ingredients you already have in your home. Not only does this help reduce food waste, but it also adds a personal touch to gifts that your loved ones will cherish. The pantry and spice drawer are the best place to start when seeking out elements for edible gifts as both hold a treasure trove of ingredients that can be transformed into seasonal delights. From bliss balls to Christmas crackers, Mangawhai local and mother of two, Juno Scott-Kelly from Love Food Hate Waste NZ has pulled together a selection of gift ideas to get you started on DIY presents.

Homemade Infused Oils: Take olive or grapeseed oil from

your kitchen, and infuse it with herbs, spices, or citrus peels to create unique flavoured oils. Present them in decorative bottles with handwritten labels for a gourmet touch.

Jarred Cookie Mixes: Layer the dry ingredients for your

favourite cookie recipe in a mason jar, add a festive ribbon and a recipe card, and you have an instant DIY cookie mix ready to gift.

Spice Blends: Most of us have pantries that are full of spices

that have only been used once or twice. A great way to use them up is to mix them all together to make spice mixes that can be used for a range of things. Package them in small, attractive containers and include a recipe card with suggestions for use.

Hot Chocolate Kits: Layer cocoa powder, sugar, and

marshmallows in a mason jar. Attach a tag with instructions for making a cozy cup of hot chocolate.

Herb Planters: If you have fresh herbs growing in your

garden, transplant them into decorative pots or mugs. These make delightful, long-lasting gifts for fellow foodies.

Homemade Sauces and Jams: Turn surplus fruits or

vegetables into flavourful jams, chutneys, or sauces. Put them in jars and label them with love.

Bread Bliss Balls: If you have leftover bread, you can

make scrumptious homemade bread bliss balls with stale bread (breadcrumbs), cocoa powder, coconut oil, sugar or date puree, vanilla extract and walnuts. Coat in dark melted chocolate for an extra wow factor. www.LoveFoodHateWaste.co.nz

Tips for Success • Personalise each gift by considering the recipient's tastes and preferences. • Use recycled or reusable packaging for an eco-friendly touch. • Include handwritten notes or cards to add a personal touch to your gifts. • Get creative with your presentation; think of ribbons, labels, and festive decorations.

Award-winning gelato in Waipu Award-winning brand, Little ‘Lato, are making their debut in Waipu, launching a summer pop-up for the summer ahead!

Being little is a surprisingly big deal when it comes to making gelato. It means this little brand can hand select ingredients, hand make the gelato with love, and be hands-on in inventing all kinds of delicious new flavours. At the heart of the Little ‘Lato flavour philosophy is curiosity and surprise, and the imaginative fusion of ingredients. Think spiced gelato loaded up with chunks of Christmas pudding, pink champagne paired with pink macarons, voluptuous Hawkes Bay plums meeting gin and buttery pastry. Their

extraordinary gelato flavours for those on gluten free, nut free, or vegan diets are also out-of-this-world delicious, made with as much imagination as the other creations. Behind the Little ‘Lato brand is Chief Gelato Creator and Founder, Hannah Wood. Like most kids, Hannah grew up adoring gelato, from her very first lick of the frozen delight. But unlike almost anyone else in New Zealand, she won a scholarship to Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy (yes, there is such a place), to pursue her tasty passion and master the art of making gelato.

Upon her return to New Zealand, Hannah created Little ‘Lato, and the rest is awardwinning history. Originally launched in December 2017 out of Crave Café in Morningside, the brand grew organically to now include Little ‘Lato partnership parlours throughout Auckland, Coromandel, Rotorua, Taupo, and Timaru. The artisan range of pre-packaged tubs, all hand-labelled by the small team of gelato artisans, are also stocked in boutique grocers, delis and vineyards throughout the country.

Hannah is excited to launch this summer pop-up, commenting “it will be a great chance to showcase the very best of the Little ‘Lato brand and to bring a little joy to locals and holidaymakers in Waipu.” So, are you ready to experience the fresh flavours you love, like espresso, pistachio, or deep dark chocolate? Or will you dare to try a curious twist? How about fresh summer blackberry sorbet infused with a burst of fresh basil? Raspberry Lamington unlike you have ever tasted before? No matter what you decide, each and every batch of Little ‘Lato is handcrafted in small batches and churned to velvety, silky perfection. So, if you’re not already totally sold, or even if you are; grab your spoon and come taste for yourself! Guardian of New Zealand wine launches Cuvar Winery With his inspiring energy and lifelong dedication to pioneering progression in the wine industry, Cuvar is the vision of legendary wine entrepreneur, Sir George Fistonich. Sir George founded Cuvar Winery to help preserve and nurture the essence of New Zealand fine wine. Sir George Fistonich

“To honour this, our name, Čuvar, (pronounced chuvar) translates to guardian in Croatian. Čuvar pays homage to the Croatian wine pioneers and many others, who played an important part in shaping what New Zealand’s wine story is today,” says Sir George. Sir George’s identity as part of an immigrant family contributed to his own spirit of determination, tenacity and good humour. The principles that drove him to push boundaries then - hard work, high standards, foresight and progress - are the values he seeks to instill in new generations of wine industry custodians, makers and hospitality leaders. George Fistonich was just 21 when he decided carpentry wasn’t his future. Instead, in 1961, he began to lease 1 hectare of family vineyard in Mangere, making wines under the name Villa Maria. What started with one hectare of leased family vineyard, became a globally recognised brand, with accolades and distinctions including a knighthood for services to New Zealand wine.

including Moët and Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Cloudy Bay and Villa Maria, Ali was keen to join Sir George again on his journey to create Čuvar from the ground up. Passionate about sustainability and the circular economy, Ali also supports Sir George’s sustainability strategy, aiming to bridge the gap between business success and environmental responsibility. Through Ali’s work for Sir George, Ali has worked with a number of Kaipara locals, including Pip White who designed another of Sir George’s labels, Obliix, released earlier this year. Sir George and his family have been holidaying in Waipu Cove for over fifty years, eventually building a house in 1999. The family holiday house sits high in the hills surrounded by native bush, vegetable gardens and fruit trees and has always been a haven of peace and quiet for the Fistonich family. Sir George can often be seen walking on the beach with his black labradoodle, Sir William, before calling into The Cove Café for a glass of wine with the owner, Lloyd. The Cove Café in Waipu has always been a fan of Sir George’s wines and will be one of the first to have the new range of wines available to taste this summer. So call in and enjoy a glass of one of Sir George’s new wines! www.CuvarWinery.com www.instagram.com/CuvarWinery

Local charm and coastal flair If you’ve ever lived in or visited Snells Beach in summer it’s not hard to see where owners, Andrew and Amy Algie, got their inspiration from when naming Crimson Coast Café.

In fact, all the neighbouring bays and beachfronts, from Brick Bay to Martins Bay, are emblazoned by the crimson canopies of pohutukawa flowers when the sun shines hot. Centrally located within the Mahurangi Shopping Centre at 280 Mahurangi East Road, Snells Beach, Crimson Coast Café is ready to serve its namesake coast. A newly concreted outdoor dining area welcomes visitors into the café; revitalised and primed to host that summer hustle and embrace the holiday vibe. The same can be said for inside ‘Crimson’; from pohutukawa decals on the wall, to tree shaped table numbers, Crimson's decor reflects attention to detail and is appropriately themed to bring the local coastal districts friendly lifestyle and serenity of summer indoors, no matter the weather or time of year! Amy is well-known to locals having run and owned the Roast and Chinese Takeaways next door to the café for the last eight years. Prior to that she managed and cooked for a café in Warkworth, so she is not short of knowledge and experience when it comes to providing fine food, great coffee and cheerful customer service. Crimson's entire staff adhere to the house rule that customer service is another way of saying, “enjoyably memorable experience”. Firmly believing that if you enjoy something you’re more likely to be good at it, Amy and Andrew strive to create an environment where everyone enjoys coming to work

and are equipped with the care and skills required to do their work well, directly reflecting the enjoyment for and care given to the customer. Crimson's menu provides the classic Kiwi café culture favourites and includes a range of vegetarian and vegan options such as falafel soft tacos and halloumi salad. From pancakes or waffles with all the toppings to

eggs benedict or the Crimson big breakfast, sweet and savoury options are covered. A choice of scones, sweet desserts and cakes are always available and change from time to time to offer customers something a little bit different, while large workers' rolls are sure to fill even the hungriest of our workforce. A comprehensive drinks menu offers all of the hot and cold coffee mainstays like flat white,

long or short black, mocha, cappuccino and sweet or spice chai. Fluffy’s will keep the littlest of customers happy and hot chocolates are available for young and old alike. Then there’s the extensive tea options from iced to green, English and more. Not daring to forget the range of tasty and fruity smoothies, Crimson's blends have to be tried to truly appreciate how yummy they are. From the very beginning of the build, Crimson Coast Café’s goal has not necessarily been to be different, just to be better. Their determination to be better is not aimed at any competition or similar locally owned businesses, but rather an internal challenge meant to continually enhance the time spent at Crimson for everyone involved in the café's future, including and most importantly the experience for the customer. Crimson is so happy to be able to provide a much missed and needed café in the area and they are looking forward to support from locals and visitors alike. Understanding Relationship Property. C RA F T ED L EGAL ADVICE FOR PEACE OF M IN D.

The protection of assets that we have all worked so hard to acquire is an important consideration for most people. Income, property, Kiwisaver, intermingled inheritances and gifts from third parties are all considered relationship property when in a de facto relationship — unless both parties have entered into a Contracting Out Agreement. Without one, relationship property would be shared equally upon separation, or even the death of one party, regardless of what anyone’s will said. Know when your relationship is considered a de facto relationship under New Zealand legislation and protect your assets with a Contracting Out Agreement. A journey of quality, community, and convenience The Superette team, under the guidance of new owner Gretchen Young, is on a mission to elevate the beachside grocery shopping experience at Omaha Beach. Their vision is to offer the local community a compact supermarket experience, with a focus on local suppliers and fresh produce. Wo rd s D e b b i e H a r r i s o n | P h o t o Amy H a m b l e tt

As the daughter of supermarket owners, Gretchen spent much of her childhood on the shop floor, learning the business from the ground up. From university she pursued an international corporate career in communications before returning to New Zealand in 2019 to complete her supermarket-owner training. Her journey included roles across various departments – including managing a seafood department, learning the skills of the trade from a talented female fishmonger – and extensive leadership and management training, all of which helped clarify the kind of supermarket she’d be proud to run one day. “I always knew I wanted to own a supermarket because I love food and I love the way that food connects people. As a supermarket owner you get the opportunity to help people every day and make their day better through this connection to food. I don’t take that for granted,” she says. With Gretchen at the helm, The Superette has undergone many changes over the past 12 months; a revamped interior, exterior tables for people to rest and relax, an in-store gelato shop, and a bountiful fresh produce area. Regular customers will also notice an increase of local products for sale, including meat, produce, salmon and cheese. Many artisans from the Matakana neighbourhood are stocked at The Superette, including Matakana Smokehouse, Matakana Coffee, Matakana Butchery, Salty River Farm, Daily Organics, Charlie’s Gelato, Wildly Delicious,

Perfectly Imperfect Pizzas, Honey by the Sea and Mummy’s Yummys, which tend to sell out every weekend! The Superette's team is a mix of friendly young people, passionate about providing a great experience for their customers. The team recently established an on-site commercial kitchen that produces convenient food-to-go options like tasty hot chickens and sandwiches, ideal for easy afternoons at the beach or bach. “We feel so lucky to be a part of this community and really want to do what we can to give people what they want, whether that’s stocking a specific product, running informative wine-tasting evenings, or giving back to good causes, like sponsoring the recent Omaha Beach Golf Club and Matakana Volunteer Fire Brigade golf day to help raise funds for a first-response vehicle,” Gretchen says. June’s inaugural Omaha Mid-Winter Swim was conceptualised by Gretchen as a way to bring the community together and to fundraise for Omaha Beach Surf Life Saving. “We were blessed with a magical mid-winter’s day and the community really got behind it. There were over 100 people that came along for the swim and we hope to have even more people come down next year,” she says. The Superette opens its doors from 7am to 7pm all summer, catering to the needs of beachgoers and locals. The store offers a fully stocked bait freezer, a purpose-built

ice freezer, and even gas bottle swaps. With daily fresh bread and a gelato bar, it's a onestop destination for everything you need. Pop by and say hi to Gretchen and the team next time you’re in Omaha! www.instagram.com/TheSuperette_ www.facebook.com/TheSuperetteOmahaBeach

Gardening calendar To keep your summer favourites producing as long as possible into autumn, plant additional tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants from December into January. Take extra care of the young plants to establish them well. As the heat of summer entrenches, think about planting crops prone to bolting like lettuce and parsley in partial shade. Nurture your sun lovers like basil and tomatoes too. Keep them growing well with periodic deep watering. With your tomatoes keep the water off the leaves if possible.

Okra Maybe this vegetable has not popped up in your garden or on your table yet. Okra is a plant in the mallow family which includes hibiscus and cotton. It produces edible seed pods 7 to 10cm long. Give it a thought though as it can grow in our region, and embraces hot dry summers. Thought to originate in Africa, okra is widely used in many cuisines, including Southern USA gumbos, Indian and many Southeast Asian dishes. Nutritionally, okra has quite a few virtues. It is high in fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It has a positive influence on digestive health due to the mix of fibre, polysaccharides, pectin, and mucilage it contains. The mucilage also helps thicken dishes it is used in. Plant okra seedlings in December or sow seed indoors four to six weeks in advance. Make sure you transplant a good strong seedling into warm soil above 20 degrees celsius. Choose a growing position in full sun. Treat okra similarly to tomatoes or capsicums. Allow plenty of room in your okra patch. The plants will require a moderate level of fertiliser and a friable free draining soil. Okra plants will start to produce their edible green pods four to six weeks from transplant. Pods will develop on the bush from flowers which are a creamy yellow with a magenta centre. Harvest the pods at between seven and ten centimeters long. They will keep producing throughout summer into autumn. The attractive bushy plants will grow to a height of between 1 and 1.5 metres. Staking may be needed as the plants grow.

Classic Christmas BBQ Potato Salad This classic potato salad is a comforting and traditional side dish, perfect for your Christmas barbecue. The combination of creamy potatoes, sweet peas, and the tangy dressing is a crowd-pleaser. The fresh dill and sliced radishes add a festive flair, making it a great addition to your holiday spread. INGREDIENTS: For the Salad: • • • • • •

Basil December is a good time to get your basil planted. Basil will happily grow in a garden bed or in pots. Make progressive plantings over summer to keep you picking this aromatic herb well into autumn. We are all familiar with the common Genovese sweet basil variety, but you can also try Greek basil, Cinnamon basil, Lemon basil, Sacred basil and Thai basil. These varieties all have different flavour profiles. Maybe you have room to give all of them a try?

Potatoes

1kg white or russet potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 cup frozen peas, blanched and cooled 1/2 cup red capsicum, finely diced 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped 3 hard-boiled eggs, chopped 1/4 cup fresh chives, chopped

For the Dressing:

For Garnish:

• • • • • •

• •

1 cup mayonnaise 2T Dijon mustard 2T apple cider vinegar 1T honey 1/2t garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh dill sprigs Sliced radishes

A favourite for the Christmas table, potatoes are a must have in a home garden. Freshly dug they have a flavour that cannot be beaten. Despite their reputation as not the healthiest of vegetables, they are a good source of vitamin B, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium plus a range of phytonutrients (many in the skin). They are around 2% protein and a good source of dietary fibre. A native of South America, they are ranked the fourth most important food crop in the world.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For a late December harvest plant early varieties like Swift, Rocket, Jersey Bennes and Cliffs Kidney in early September. When you see fully open flowers (except Rocket which doesn’t flower) you can expect to have potatoes under the plant ready to harvest. It is fine to rob a few potatoes from the growing plant as you need them. Have a feel around in the soil for a good sized spud, give it a twist and pull it out leaving the plant intact. This is easier to do if you mound up your potato plants as they grow.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the boiled and cubed potatoes, blanched peas, diced red bell pepper, finely chopped red onion, chopped hard-boiled eggs, and fresh chives.

December is a good time to plant main crop varieties like Agria, Rua, Karaka, Moonlight and Desiree as well as Taewa (Maori potatoes) like Kowiniwini, Moemoe and Urenika. Main crop potatoes will be ready to harvest in mid to late autumn.

Boil potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are forktender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and let them cool, then cut them into bite-sized cubes. Prepare the dressing in a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, honey, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.

Pour the dressing over the salad ingredients and gently toss to coat everything evenly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the potato salad for at least 2 hours to allow the flavours to meld. Before serving, decorate your Christmas BBQ Potato Salad with fresh dill sprigs and sliced radishes for a festive touch and an extra pop of colour.

Hidden beauty Nestled discreetly behind a lush, ivy-covered fence on Matakana Valley Road, is a charming cottage that has recently undergone a stunning transformation. Wo r d s Mi l l y N o l a n | P h o t o s Mi c h e l l e We i r, S t u d i o : We i r

Well-acquainted with the nuances of the property market, Heather Walton and her husband, Mark Bycroft – owners of Ray White Matakana and Omaha – serendipitously stumbled upon a golden opportunity while heading to their bach in Omaha a couple of years ago. As they drove, a “for sale” sign at the top of the hill on Matakana Valley Road piqued their interest. “We immediately pulled over, rang the agent and next minute we were buying the property. We just had to have it,” remarks Heather.

Initially, Heather and Mark’s primary intention when acquiring the property was to house their Ray White offices in the building adjacent to the main house, a 1940s cottage. For a year, the cottage sat vacant, serving as storage for the couple's excess furniture and occasionally to house guests. However, when Heather and Mark decided to sell both their Remuera home in Auckland and their Omaha bach, their plans took a different turn, and they decided to transform the cottage into their new home.

“While the cottage has always had charm,

we wanted to modernise it and also make it

more functional,” says Heather. “Moving to a smaller house has been a big adjustment for us, as we are used to living in larger, more modern houses.”

To achieve the level of luxury they were

accustomed to, albeit on a smaller scale,

Heather engaged Jordy Cochrane, Director of Board & Batten Interior Design Studio, to breathe new life into the property. “Jordy

understood the brief immediately. Our motto with the house is “small and gorgeous” and that’s precisely what she has delivered. I have a penchant for things that are a bit over-the-top so although the house is old, I wanted to add touches of contemporary luxury wherever possible.” Careful to retain the beauty and integrity of the original cottage, Jordy opted for a fresh, neutral colour palette throughout the home, incorporating natural materials such as wood and stone. “Heather and Mark brought a lot of their own furniture with them so our goal was to complement these pieces by introducing contemporary products and materials that would infuse a touch of glamour into their home,” says Jordy. While the footprint of the original house remains the same, every interior inch was rejuvenated. A fresh lick of paint was applied inside and out, the windows were all upgraded with double-glazed glass, along with new blinds and shutters. The once-dark wooden floors were replaced with a lighter, grey-washed European Oak from Forte Flooring. Bedrooms were adorned with Chelsea Row carpet to soften the space, while designer pendant and wall lights from ECC provided the finishing touches throughout. Given the existing kitchen was in good condition, all that was needed was a new stone benchtop, new cabinet fronts and an exquisite ECC Yanzi suspension light which hangs proudly over the kitchen bar. The laundry area was completely redone with a soft fluted backsplash tile, cabinetry

with mesh frontage, shoe drawers and ample storage for linen. What was once an indoor porch, used for drying clothes, has been ingeniously repurposed by Jordy into a multifunctional space, doubling as a scullery for kitchen storage and also a bar. It boasts a large gas-lift window that opens onto the loggia, creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, perfect for serving cocktails on warm summer days. “With limited kitchen storage, we needed this space to feel like an extension of the kitchen,” Jordy remarked. “We added push-to-open cupboards for glassware, a Fisher & Paykel Cool Drawer for beer and wine, and installed a hidden storage bin for bottles, making every inch of this new space highly functional.” The main bathroom stands out as the pièce de résistance, with large porcelain tiles gracing the floors and walls of the bathroom, arched mirrors hanging above the double vanity, aged iron vertical heated towel rails, and a generously proportioned double shower with a beautiful, fluted glass door. “The first thing that everyone says when they see the bathroom is ‘oh my god’. It really is simply breathtaking,” marvels Heather. Originally a three-bedroom house, one of the smaller bedrooms was converted into a wardrobe for Heather – an impressive space (and every woman’s dream) with floor-toceiling shelves, wardrobes, and a drop-down ironing board. “Personally, that room is all I really need”, laughs Heather. “That, and my fabulous bathroom.” Additionally, Heather and Mark have added a two-bedroom Tiny Home on the property to

accommodate their son when he visits from university. Future plans include installing a louvre tech system over the outdoor deck area to create a year-round entertainment space, as well as constructing a garage, which Heather affectionately dubs a “man shed” for Mark. “We also have aspirations of connecting the house with the office area, perhaps with a gallery hallway, but that’s a project for the future,” says Heather. “I couldn’t live here until I loved it, and now I truly do. Due to the nature of our profession, we don’t often linger in our homes for long, but perhaps this one will be the exception. www.RWMatakana.co.nz www.BoardAndBatten.co.nz

Beata Kelly on her work and experience at 5R Studio As of mid this year, one of the owners of 5R Studio, an interior design and styling company, made the move to the charming town of Waipu.

Beata and her husband, Dean, opted to leave the bustling city life behind, embracing a more picturesque and tranquil existence. This relocation has brought about some challenges, particularly in maintaining the continuity of her ongoing design projects. While she still undertakes some work in Auckland, Beata’s ultimate goal is to fully integrate into the local community and focus all her efforts on projects within the Northland area. Beata embarked on her interior design journey 12 years ago, guided by the belief in evolution rather than revolution when it comes to good design. This philosophy led her to the core principles of 5R Studio. “Knowing that we’ve rescued numerous pieces of home décor from ending up in landfills is a deeply gratifying aspect of my work,” she remarks. Whenever possible, Beata is committed to reusing and repurposing sentimental and

timeless furniture pieces, creating a stylish and eclectic mix that narrates the client’s life journey and infuses the home with character. None of her designs resemble staged showpieces; instead, they exude a lived-in quality, evoking a sense of curated elegance developed over time. Beata’s designs transcend the boundaries of mere aesthetics, aiming to craft homes that emanate serenity and relaxation. These are spaces that facilitate daily rejuvenation, contributing to overall well-being. Her primary objective is to create homes where clients can completely recharge. “I aspire to

illustrate to my clients the art of balancing perfect, beautiful, and functional design with environmental responsibility. I want them to be active participants in the process, shaping a home they adore and are proud of,” says Beata. Beata’s signature designs magnify the essence of the homeowner, leveraging her expertise to edit and curate various design styles. Her work is tailored to meet clients budget constraints and specific needs. and installers, art galleries, antique dealers, and reputable furniture suppliers. She places equal emphasis on design excellence and exceptional customer service. Her background in the corporate world equips her with superior project management skills, an indispensable asset in the contemporary world of design. When addressing the topic of money and budgeting, Beata acknowledges the current economic climate, which has seen price increases across various sectors, often making people hesitant to venture into the unknown. Beata frequently encounters clients who believe they cannot afford professional interior design services. Her experience, however, reveals a different reality. In times like these, Beata believes expert guidance is more valuable than ever. Design professionals understand the intricacies of the field, saving both time and money in the long run. Selecting the right suppliers is imperative. Partnering with those who have consistently demonstrated their expertise and ethical standards ensures that staying on budget while achieving high-quality results is not only feasible but an assurance for your most precious investment – your home. beata@5RStudio.co.nz | 021 020 23631

Balancing timelessness with fresh ideas Interior design and styling company, 5R Studio, discusses interior design trends for 2024. With over 50 trends to explore worldwide, here they cover a few of their favourites.

Jovial Colours Take inspiration from the Barbie aesthetic and introduce playful pinks to your decor. You can easily switch them out when you're ready for a change. A touch of pink on an entryway wall or some vibrant cushions in the bedroom can keep your decor fresh and fun.

Oversized Accents Add a touch of sophistication with oversized decor elements. Think large vases, sculptural furniture, and quirky pieces with a hint of retro charm. These oversized accents can infuse a sense of playfulness into your space.

Curvilinear Designs It's essential to remember that trends evolve and change over time. While some trends may be fleeting, it's crucial to strike a balance between staying current and maintaining a sense of timelessness in your interior design. Furthermore, the sustainability of our choices in home decor is a pivotal concern in 2024, emphasising the need for eco-friendly, enduring designs.

Sustainability In 2024, one of the most prominent trends is the emphasis on sustainability in our choices for interior decor. The "cheap-buytwice" philosophy is no longer in vogue. Instead, people are seeking products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also built to last for decades. The intention is to invest in pieces that will stand the test of time, making our homes more eco-friendly and reducing waste. Very often this trend is called Quiet Luxury.

Timeless Mid-Century Furniture A prime example of a long-lasting trend is the enduring popularity of mid-century furniture. This design style, which we fell in love with a decade ago, continues to feel fresh and timeless. It seamlessly combines sleek lines, organic shapes, and functional design. These pieces not only exude aesthetic charm but also tell a story of an era that valued nature, simplicity, and innovation.

Curvilinear furniture is all the rage in 2024. Furniture with organic shapes and flowing designs, such as round sofas, sweeping chaises, or Art Nouveau-inspired lamps, are perfect for creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere in your home.

Indoor Greenery The trend of incorporating greenery indoors is gaining momentum, and for good reason. It not only enhances the aesthetics of your space but also benefits your physical and mental well-being. Indoor plants promote better air quality, harmony, and add a delightful touch of green to your surroundings.

Multi-Purpose Curtains In 2024, curtains are no longer limited to covering windows. They can be used creatively to hide a home office in your living room, for instance. Curtains offer a stylish solution to create defined spaces while adding texture, warmth, and a pop of colour to your room. In conclusion, as we step into 2024, it's time to blend timeless elements with fresh, sustainable trends in interior design. Whether it's the enduring appeal of mid-century furniture or the contemporary ideas mentioned above, 2024 promises to be a year of creative and conscious interior design. So, awaken your creativity and embark on a journey of interior decor in 2024. Wishing you a year filled with exciting DIY projects and innovative design choices! beata@5RStudio | 021 020 23631

From olives to artistry David Sullivan’s journey from the corporate world to olives and pottery tells a unique tale of artistic transformation and dedication to his passion. Wo rd s Mi l ly No l a n

A decade ago, David Sullivan and his wife, Isabella, made a life-altering decision. They bid farewell to their corporate careers in Devonport and decided to move to the country where they bought a property with sweeping views of the Mahurangi Harbour, complete with a 20-year-old olive grove. Their venture was twofold: to dive into something entirely new that they could both learn together – which turned out to be the creation of their renowned and awardwinning Matakana Extra Virgin Olive Oil – and to create a pottery studio for David to indulge his passion for clay. “Leaving the corporate world was our opportunity to dedicate ourselves to more meaningful pursuits,” says David. “I first fell in love with pottery when I lived in England in the 1990’s, but my passion was reignited when I joined Auckland Studio Potters and attended classes in 2010.” David's love for wood-firing, a unique method in the pottery world, was a driving force behind setting up a pottery studio on their sprawling acreage. With dedication

and the guidance of some pottery friends, he set about designing and building his own wood-fired kiln during the Pandemic. Using reclaimed bricks with rich histories – some from a local kiln dating back to the 1970’s, once owned by local potter Judy Woods, and others from the old Auckland gasworks building – crafting the kiln became a labour of love. "It was a real passion project,” says David. “It took many months to build, with every brick requiring grinding and shaping to fit.” Unlike electric kilns, the wood-fired kiln’s process and the exceptional results it yields are truly one-of-a-kind. Operating at scorching temperatures, the wood-fired kiln reaches up to 1,300 degrees Celsius, employing wood, oxygen, natural chemicals, ash and other elements to create distinct glazes and forms through a process known as reduction firing. The organic and unpredictable nature of wood-firing excites David, who relishes the element of surprise. “My love for pottery encompasses the entire process and that it all comes from my own hands - from starting with something that is

essentially dirt and water and then shaping and creating it into something beautiful. With a wood-fired kiln, the firing can last from 14 to 18 hours, requiring constant attention to stoke the fire. It creates a real sense of anticipation due to the process’s organic nature. The kiln is only lit about four times a year, and can hold around a hundred pieces.” With no intention of mass production, David’s pottery harmonises functionality with beauty. He emphasises, “Everything is bespoke and unique. Items may have a common theme, but no two pieces are the same.” Having attracted buyers from around the world who appreciate the stunning uniqueness of his pottery, David specialises in creating mugs, jugs, platters, bowls, and vases. “I’m looking for form and function whenever I create a piece, so that they can either be used as an ornamental piece, or as an everyday object,” he says. While earthy tones predominantly grace David’s work, he enjoys experimenting with different colours, textures, and glaze effects.

While he is committed to following his own creative instincts, he credits the remarkable tutors and potters at Auckland Potters Studio for their influence, along with the work of 1970s potters, such as Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew. Recently David and Isabella have resolved their olive oil business to free up their time and commitments, and of course, for David, this means more time pursuing what he loves best. “Moving out of the city and embracing my passion for pottery has been the best decision I ever made. I have never looked back. I believe it’s so important to follow your heart in life and to lead a balanced lifestyle. Life is too short to not live it how you want to.” The studio is open by appointment. www.MahurangiOlives.co.nz | 021 952 636

Meet the artist on Gumfield Drive Having recently exhibited his series ‘Lov’in Lisbon’ at elemento Coffee x Gallery and with works permanently displayed for sale at Art Matakana Gallery, Simon Payton is saying, “Hello Warkworth.”

In the serene and artistic journey of life, one finds themselves led down a path of love and development, especially when it comes to an art career. The next chapter in this personal adventure belongs to the artist who has traversed a remarkable path – from the bustling streets of Allen Street and a quaint Greengrocers shop in Island Bay, Wellington, to the vibrant locales of Britomart and Mount Wellington in Auckland, and even as far as Brixton and Saint Leonards in the UK. A selfdescribed wandering gypsy, Simon Payton has found a resting place in Warkworth, until the north wind blows to move him on.

50

LIFESTYLE

Between that junction is a period of time for reflection, hard work, and the pursuit of dreams.

“Being an artist isn't just a career; it is in

fact a possession of spirit and being”, says Simon. He believes art is not something you can simply pick up, manipulate, or

play with – it's the very essence of one’s

soul. His art is a heartfelt response to the

ever-shifting currents of the world around us. “We live, we experience, and we

create, not because it needs to be done, but because there is no alternative.”

Over the past decade, Simon Payton's work has evolved through the metaphysical presence of 'O’s and X’s,' serving as the foundational meaning behind his art. Series in his portfolio include thought-provoking works such as 'Talking to the moon,' 'Wildfires’ I, and II, 'Crossroads,' 'Financial Chaos,' 'Standing on Pedestals,' and 'Lov'in Lisbon.' As Simon looks ahead, new series are waiting to be born – a beautiful fusion of his two greatest passions: art and cricket. In a mere fortnight, he’s off to face our old adversaries, the Australians, representing our beloved country in the sport at a senior level. Back

in the early days of Simon’s cricket journey, fortune smiled upon him as he was selected for the Ambassadors tour; taking him to various exotic destinations, from North and South America to the West Indies, Lisbon, Madrid, Tangiers, Gibraltar, Paris, and the UK. An amazing and inspiring chapter of Simon’s life. Although cricket occasionally took a backseat over the years, it remained an integral part of his existence. This year, in a flash of inspiration, the cricket series has emerged, waiting to be explored and captured on canvas. So now, Warkworth has transformed into Simon Payton’s resting place, his studio, and showcase; soon to be proudly signed with his 'O’s & X’s' insignia, the trusty Renault camper parked outside, marking the arrival of a quintessential artist on Gumfield Drive. www.SimonPayton.co.nz www.instagram.com/SimonPaytonArt

It's her way of contributing to the community she loves. Beyond financial contributions, Jodi actively engages with the community. She sponsors the annual Point Wells letterbox competition, an event that fosters creativity and neighbourly connections; along with stiff competition! She also plays a part in organizing Halloween festivities in the village and supports the annual Pink Ribbon fundraiser at the Point Wells Club. Giant spotted in Mangawhai When you hear ‘giant skateboard’ you no doubt think of something fairly large, but think bigger again and you’ll be getting closer to the 12 metre long behemoth that is currently undergoing refurbishment before being installed as a permanent sculpture at the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) skate park.

When asked why anyone would build such a thing, MAZ trustee Simon Bennett responded, “The New Zealand Olympic Committee wanted to promote the inclusion of skateboarding in the Tokyo Olympics and they toured the country with this giant skateboard, but they didn’t know what to do with it afterwards.” Eventually, MAZ was approached to see if they were interested. “The committee was thinking about the giant carrot in Ohakune and the L&P bottle in Paeroa, and decided, why not be the town with the world’s largest skateboard?” says Simon. “So we brought it back to Mangawhai – which was a mission in itself because it’s so huge.” Before being claimed by MAZ, the board spent nearly two years outdoors, under a not-very-waterproof cover and some water damage occurred. The board is now under shelter at Limitless Scaffolding in Mangawhai, and a lot of work has gone into repairs and refurbishment. “We’ve had a dehumidifier going for at least six weeks now,” says Simon, “and we’re very grateful to Mangawhai Hire for letting us have that.” Grants from Kaipara District Council and the Mangawhai Opportunity Shop have allowed repairs to proceed, and most of the work on the board has been done by volunteers. “RS

Engineering and Mangawhai Engineering have also been very kind with their time and materials,” says Simon. The team is now in the process of putting the board back together so that it matches the original build. On completion, it will be taken to MAZ and mounted on a frame designed by RS Engineering and built by Mangawhai Engineering. “It will be extraordinary when it’s done,” says Simon. “Because it’ll be up in the air, tilted towards the viewer, it’s going to look dynamic.” The board is rideable, in that it rolls along the ground, but the trucks aren’t functional so it can’t turn. “It’s the biggest skateboard in the world,” explains Simon, “but it wasn’t recognised as a Guinness World Record because the bushings (the large rubber washers in the middle of skateboard trucks) aren’t made of rubber and it can’t turn, so it’s not a ‘real’ skateboard.” Simon is hoping the board will be installed by Christmas, but, if not, it might make an appearance in the Santa parade. “Our goal is to have it sit up on its stand at MAZ for 20 years,” says Simon. He adds with a laugh, “We don’t want to have to take it down again.” www.MangawhaiActivityZone.co.nz

Dorothy the bus awaits your visit Long standing readers of Junction may remember a feature on Harthouse Cabins which were being built in Mangawhai Heads, back in 2017. After building these cabins for other people, Cliff and Angela decided to keep a couple for themselves to offer the experience of staying in them on their property; and thus Harthouse Haven was created. P h o t o s L a u r e n Ky l i e Mu r r a y

Initially this setup consisted of two cabins, each with queen beds, a separate kitchen and bathroom. After some time they added another unusual accommodation option to their property - a 1968 Bedford house bus called Dorothy. Dorothy started life as a school bus before being converted for full time living and travelling around the country for several years, eventually coming to rest in the Waikato. Following an adventure packed journey up to Mangawhai she was remodelled and repainted to become part of Harthouse Haven. Dorothy is ideally suited for short or medium term stays for a single person or a couple. She has a very comfortable bed with electric blankets and great quality ironed cotton sheets, a kitchen with gas hob and cooking equipment (including of course a stove top coffee percolator). Cliff and Angela like guests to make the most of the tranquil environment and so have plenty of books and games on board to be enjoyed. For many people the downside of bus living is the limited bathroom space, but they have found a way around that by providing a totally separate shower and toilet with great water pressure and plenty of room. The jewel in the crown though is the bush bath set amongst the trees, with instant gas hot water and the most tranquil surroundings.

Dorothy sleeps two, however with the two cabins on the same property able to accommodate a couple each, Harthouse Haven can offer accommodation for up to six adults. The location is ideal for offering a rural retreat while only being a few minutes drive from the beach and the main town centre. All of the options above - one cabin, two cabins or Dorothy the bus - can be booked through Riparide and Airbnb; search for 'Harthouse Cabins' or 'Dorothy the bus at Harthouse Haven'. www.facebook.com/HarthouseCabins

Glamping on the Mahurangi Harbour Beth and Roger Harper vividly remember the first time that they saw the stunning beauty of the Mahurangi Harbour from their boat, over 20 years ago now. It was magical then, and it is no less magical now. Years later, they decided to escape the madding crowd and move North. Recalling that first encounter, they took a drive down Mahurangi West Road to see if their memories were accurate. It wasn’t long until they fell in love! How could a place this beautiful, relatively untouched, and less than 40 minutes from Auckland exist? They literally had driven past this road hundreds of times over the years and never realised the beauty that lay in wait. Fast forward another three years and they had purchased part of a lovely farm right on the water overlooking Pukapuka Inlet. Confirming that they weren’t the only ones to think this was the most beautiful place they had ever seen, they spotted the farm in a very popular painting in the Matakana Gallery and were also pleasantly surprised one day to come through Auckland Domestic Airport and see a large mural of the farm being used as a hoarding. From the outset they thought a luxury glamping business would be an amazing venture to set up for the farm, given the breathtaking views, proximity to Auckland, and the privacy. And so, Waha Ridge Glamping was born and commenced taking guests in 2023. Waha Ridge Glamping is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is no compromise on comfort in this true luxe glamping experience. Stunning, spacious, and luxuriously appointed safari tents are set into the landscape. In the East, Oyster Cove, and in the West, The Forest. Relax in the deep comfort of the king size bed, watch the sunrise or sunset from an outdoor bath or sink into bean bags, stargaze and roast marshmallows over the fire pit. Situated next to Sullivans Bay, Mahurangi Regional Park and Te Muri Beach, and just minutes away from all that Matakana, Puhoi, Warkworth and Orewa have to offer, there is so much to see and do in our stunning backyard. From walks to wineries, beautiful beaches, markets, galleries, and eateries there is literally something for everyone. On the other hand, just sink into luxury; relax, unwind, refresh and breathe. World-class handcrafted lures Designed and tested for successfully targeting big aggressive pelagic fish, Mike and his family live in the small seaside town of Waipu, where they run their successful business, On Top Lures.

With sea salt running through their veins they have a huge passion for the environment and ocean. It was only natural for Mike, who is a well-known builder and carpenter in the area, to combine the two together. Fishing his home waters a lot with mates led to them peer pressuring Mike into making lures. It wasn’t long until he gave in to the pressure and started making prototypes. “My mates and I had been fishing with $30 lures straight out of the packet and had been catching amazing fish. One of my good mates upped the ante by picking up a couple of well-known Japanese lures which I’d never seen in person before with a price tag of NZ$500.00 for two lures! It blew my mind

that people actually buy these to potentially tie on their line and lose in the first cast or take. Being a builder by trade, it gave me the urge to see if I could make something similar. I kept trying to make better ones and giving them to mates to use and they loved them, so I just kept on making them and never stopped!” From that moment on, in between building, fishing, or surfing Mike was in his shed improving and perfecting his creations. Eventually sending a few fine tuned models to some well-known fishing legends and in return getting a world-class name for his craftsmanship. The business has gone from strength to strength with the brand becoming

a common sight in lure boxes worldwide, selling in shops from Dubai to Australia, Japan and New Zealand. The love and care they have for the environment is reflected in everything they do at On Top Lures. No plastic is used in the packaging and sending of lures. Caring for the environment and getting others to jump on the bandwagon is a huge goal for the brand. They are a true family business, Mike on the tools, Rita in the office and their two girls, Lila and Indi, their biggest cheerleaders! www.instagram.com/OnTopLures www.facebook.com/OnTopLuresNewZealand

The chilling benefits of ocean plunging It was a tough start to the year in Mangawhai, hit hard by the destructive deluge of Cyclone Gabrielle, followed by ongoing unseasonal rainfall and flooding. As the weather eventually settled, and the local community worked to repair damage and stay grounded, a seed of an idea was floated as a way to get through winter with greater resilience, to strengthen the community, and support mental health and well-being. At the same time rebuilding a connection to the stunning natural environment.

Mangawhai Cold Water Plungers was created in April with a small core pod, and the Facebook group steadily swelled to over 80 members. Many locals and weekend residents seem keen to have a go at cold water therapy, and having the support of a group gave newbies the confidence to brave the ocean together. Core pod members started a challenge renamed ‘Wet July’; instead of giving up alcohol, which they'd already done, they committed to cold water swims daily throughout July. The joyful benefits of this daily discipline in July spilled over into August, September, and continued for well over 100 consecutive days. The pod delighted in sharing plunges with orcas, dolphins, seals, and each other throughout the depths of winter. Courage, playfulness and camaraderie grew exponentially. There are so many perks of living in magical Mangawhai, but there’s one in particular that draws both locals and tourists to this special little town; the beauty of its majestic coastline. Stunning sandy beaches aren’t just a staple of weekend summer fun, they can also greatly benefit your health. Here are five wonderful side effects of year-round plunging in the ocean:

Increases White Bloods Cells

Did you know that swimming in the ocean can boost your immune system and make you less susceptible to common colds and illnesses? Studies have found that cold saltwater swimmers have increased white blood cell counts, which is what our body uses to fight off infections.

Boosts Endorphins

Jumping into cold water can release a cocktail of chemicals in your brain such as endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin which all help our bodies feel relief from pain and also make us happier. Swimming in the ocean even just twice a week has been proven to help people suffering from the effects of Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Anxiety and Depression.

Better Circulation

When a swim in the ocean is followed by a warm shower, the change in temperature causes your body to quickly circulate your blood from close to your organs to closer to the surface of your skin. Healthy blood and oxygen flow allows your vital organs, such as your lungs and heart, to function efficiently.

THINKING OF BUILDING? LET'S WORK TOGETHER!

62

ON THE WATER

Burns Twice as Many Calories

Swimming in cold water works your body twice as hard because of a hormone called irisin which creates heat production from fat. Ditch your heated gym pool and take advantage of Mangawhai's beautiful beaches for your next workout!

Great For Your Skin

Seawater can provide some great health benefits, particularly for your largest organ, your skin. Seawater is also high in minerals, including magnesium, which is naturally exfoliating and can help keep your skin baby smooth. Newcomers are welcome to join Mangawhai Cold Water Plungers, it's free, and they meet once a week on Sunday mornings at Mangawhai Heads Beach. No fancy equipment or experience is required, just curiosity, togs, towel and plenty of warm clothes for afterwards. Plunge joyfully, safely and mindfully with buddies, for around 5-10 minutes, depending on the water temperature. Contact the group through their Facebook page to join.

After mulling over various business approaches, the final result was the purchase of Alta Surf Co, a fledgling company set up by a keen surfer in Raglan with a similar vision. From its beginning Alta Surf’s primary mission aligned with Zac’s outlook; to provide customers with top-notch surf fins and accessories at prices that don't break the bank.

Driver Series, which is selling well, comes in a thruster setup in a smoky matt black colour and is a performance fin with plenty of drive, hence the name Driver Series. Development for an Alta Surf leg rope range is underway and future opportunities for designing a tail pad and board bag range are being explored.

While the company has moved from Raglan to Mangawhai, the focus continues to remain on the end product. Because of the critical role that high-quality fins play in enhancing a surfer's performance their fins are carefully sourced from reputable manufacturers known for their innovation, durability, and hydrodynamic design. Recognising that every surfer has unique preferences and faces different surfing conditions, their diverse range of fins ensure that surfers of all skill levels can find the perfect fit for their boards. Their extensive range, designed for performance characteristics, includes Thrusters, Five Fin, Quads, Longboard, and Twin Fins, meaning fins can be customised for individual requirements.

With all products affordability is a key factor. By keeping their overheads low and reducing packaging costs they are able to pass the savings on to their customers. The business's success is built on satisfied customers who return time and again for their surfboard fin needs. While initially an online-only store, and although they still sell direct via their website, Zac recognises that many customers prefer a hands-on look at their selection. As a consequence, to help customers achieve their optimal fin setup, selected retail outlets have now been taken on to fill this market gap. This is in line with the company’s longer-term plan to engage with more retailers throughout New Zealand that can provide a service and back-up that is consistent with the Alta Surf ethos.

Alta Surf have recently released new products, including the Driver series, Twin fins and Longboard fin ranges. The

Infusing optimal health in the comfort of your own home Louise, a Registered Nurse, kick-started her nursing career in 2014 in Melbourne, before embarking on a transformative journey, redirecting her nursing path towards more holistic approaches. Since 2019, Louise has worked in Integrative Medicine, collaborating with Dr. Tim Ewer in Mapua, before establishing her mobile IV nutrient infusion service, available Auckland wide.

Known as ‘The Nutrient Nurse,’ Louise addresses a pertinent question: “How healthy do you feel right now?” In today's rapidpaced world, where individuals grapple with daily life demands, prioritising wholesome nutrition often takes a back seat. The scarcity of nutrient-rich fresh produce and compromised gut absorption leaves many individuals lacking essential raw materials for optimal bodily function. Louise emphasises the significance of absorption over consumption, highlighting that one is not merely defined by what they eat, but by what they absorb. Having witnessed a disconcerting pattern in hospitals where patients were overwhelmed with an array of pills at every meal, followed by a meal that consisted of jelly and white bread, Louise recognised the shortcomings of traditional approaches in achieving lasting health outcomes. “It was clear that symptoms were suppressed with meds but the underlying root cause of their disease continued to wreak havoc in the background,” says Louise. This realisation fuelled her determination to advocate for better health outcomes through a holistic approach. Louise's journey into Integrative Medicine commenced during her studies in Biomedical Science at Monash University, Victoria. The deep-seated understanding of the critical role nutrients play in cellular function and overall health guided her to shift her nursing focus toward holistic treatments. She strives to empower others to comprehend their bodies' innate healing capacities, urging them to fuel their bodies with the necessary raw materials for optimal function.

WELLNESS

Drawing on the principles of epigenetics, Louise emphasises the body's remarkable ability to heal when provided with a conducive environment. Prioritising health by providing the body with the essential raw materials it needs to function and minimising exposure to toxins and harmful foods, allows the body to thrive and do what it does best - heal. IV nutrient infusions offer a rapid means to boost nutrient levels, circumventing the digestive system and going directly into the bloodstream for optimal absorption. ‘The Nutrient Nurse’ ensures that health remains accessible, bringing the clinic to the individual's doorstep. The infusion process typically lasts 30-60 minutes, occasionally extending to 2 hours for specific cases. Louise skilfully inserts a line into the vein to facilitate the gentle infusion of nutrients. During the appointment, individuals can engage in various activities, such as working, sleeping, or discussing their lifestyle and dietary habits in depth with Louise. Her ultimate goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge that they possess the capacity to lead optimally healthy lives by aligning with their bodies. Louise possesses full certification to administer injectable nutrients and boasts exceptional proficiency in IV insertion. www.TheNutrientNurse.nz www.instagram.com/TheNutrientNurse.NZ

HAPPENINGS Making Room for Rivers

Monday 4 December, 7pm - 9pm, Matakana Hall Tom Kay, freshwater advocate, is coming to Matakana to talk about how river management in New Zealand has worsened the impacts of flooding and degraded the health of New Zealand’s rivers. “Many stop banks and other flood mitigation infrastructures need expensive improvements to cope with the increased risk to communities,” says Tom. “The way these defences are currently constructed can actually increase the risk of flooding during large rainfall events.” Giving rivers room and other nature-based solutions can reduce the problems seen during recent extreme weather events. The impact is made worse by the loss of wetlands and forests and Tom advocates a ‘new’ way of thinking about responding to climate change. The event is free but please reserve your seat at Eventfinda - Tom Kay on Making Room for Rivers Friends. Hosted by Awa Matakanakana (FOAM) and Forest & Bird Warkworth Area. www.AwaMatakanakana.home.blog | FoamFacilitator@gmail.com
