PROFILE

MR ENVIRONMENT AND ADVENTURE: WINSTON COWIE

Winston Cowie, son of Matakana locals Mike and Sue Cowie, grew up at Campbells Beach, Tawharanui Peninsula, before embarking on a successful career in environmental policy, film, writing, rugby and adventure that has taken him to over 40 countries. He currently works as the Marine Policy Manager at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, where he is settled with his wife, Lucy, and four children.

It was during his upbringing in the Kawau Bay region that his love for the environment really developed - sailing and fishing on the Kawau Bay side of Tawharanui and surfing at Anchor Bay and at Pakiri and Mangawhai further up the coast. Winston completed a law degree

from Otago University, before being awarded a law scholarship to work at New Zealand law firm Russell McVeagh. Wanting to have a positive impact on society and the environment, Winston applied and was awarded academic and sporting scholarships to complete an MSc in Environmental Policy at Oxford University.

He has spent the past ten years in the Middle East where he works as the Marine Policy Manager at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. To give this context, his portfolio covers a marine area nearly half the size of the North Island, a population of 9.7 million people interacting with it and covers the sustainable use, environmental management and conservation of

fisheries, protected areas, endangered species and habitats, biodiversity, eco-tourism, climate change, and development of the aquaculture sector.

But life isn’t all high level meetings with Ministers and the like, he still gets to do grass roots conservation - this involves tackling gently Green Turtles which weighs 100kg and putting satellite tags on them.

Winston is considered a thought leader in the international environmental policy and climate change field where he has been awarded two Al Dana Pearl awards by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan of Abu Dhabi for his contributions to the Emirate, and more widely his work won ‘best

Lights’ won a World Medal at the prestigious New York Festivals TV and Film awards.

Winston’s interest in film goes back to his time in New Zealand where his first documentary – Mystery at Midge Bay – premiered at Matakana Cinema. He also worked as the Dive Supervisor on the New Zealand underwater series ‘Our Big Blue Backyard’ with locals Brady Doak, Dave Abbott and Steve Hathaway, finding a Maori taonga whilst underwater at Tawharanui which he gifted back to local Maori. It was found under the same reef he had grown up surfing on.

His innovative approach of using film in marine policy and to drive environmental outcomes and behavioural change has won international acclaim. In 2018, he was chosen as an Ambassador of the Environment Agency

- Abu Dhabi and environmental champion Dr Jane Goodall to complete the Sir Robert Swan Leadership and Climate Change Course on the International Antarctic Expedition. Sir Robert Swan was the first person to walk to both the north and south poles. From 90 international leaders in government, private practice and entrepreneurship from 20 countries, Winston was awarded the supreme Sir Robert Swan Leadership Award for his contributions to the expedition, notably for his use of solar energy to deliver a message of unity, hope and action to the world in solar lights from Antarctica.

Liking to keep busy, over the course of his journey, Winston has authored two New Zealand history books. The first is a historical fiction set during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, 'A Flame Flickers in the Darkness'. It has been praised by the descendants of the Maori and Pakeha heroes he wrote about. His second book entitled Conquistador Puzzle Trail proposes that the Portuguese and Spanish were the first Europeans to discover New Zealand. After sparking a national debate, it has been added to the encyclopedia of New Zealand as the key source on this subject, translated into Spanish, and with the support of the Spanish Embassy in New Zealand over 300 copies were sent to all secondary schools and universities in New Zealand.

In addition to leading a good will charity rugby mission to Seychelles and Madagascar, which screened on World Rugby TV, Winston represented the UAE Rugby National Team at the World Cup Qualifiers in 2017. The team is ranked 62nd in the world and he is one of the Mahurangi region’s most recent rugby internationals.

ECO FUNERALS – THE NATURAL WAY TO GO WORDS

Jason Morrison Funeral Services in Warkworth has been operating for 28 years, and one of the secrets to their longevity is being open to new ideas.

“Lately, people have been enquiring about ecofunerals,” says Funeral Director and Celebrant Nicola Morrison. “Which suits us well, since we’re always aiming to have as low impact on the environment as possible.”

“For some people it’s being buried in a cardboard or wicker casket, maybe avoiding embalming or using eco-friendly embalming products. For others it’s being cremated and the ashes being scattered or kept in an eco-friendly way.”

A sustainable or natural funeral means different things to different people.

“Personally, I think our wooden caskets are a wonderful option. We are mindful of using wood from renewable resources, held together with wooden plugs as opposed to metal. We recommend lining the casket with sheepskin to ensure every part is biodegradable,” Nicola says.

“It’s open for interpretation, and the wishes of the family are always our priority,” says Nicola.

natural materials. If the ashes are being scattered or interred, the family can then keep the box for photographs and keepsakes of their loved one.

Also popular is the biodegradable Deep Ocean Earth Urn, made from paper with a water-soluble Bio Ash Bag inside. It is typically placed in the water from a boat and will sink after a while, leaving no lasting impact on the environment.

“We’re mindful of other parts of the service as well. So if the family wants to release balloons, we always use eco-balloons with biodegradable strings, to ensure no animals get hurt,” says Nicola.

Nicola knew she wanted to become a funeral celebrant after going to a funeral with a ‘quite prickly’ friend whose mother had passed away.

When she heard the story of this woman’s life, it gave her a renewed understanding and compassion towards her friend.

Apart from being a qualified celebrant, Nicola also studied public speaking and grief counselling. She loves sitting down with family and talking about the person they’ve lost, to write up their eulogy.

“Often when you tell a story about a person, it enables people to see them from the outside for the first time. It can give people a new clarity and

understanding about why they were the way they were. I find it often helps people in their grieving process, with forgiveness and moving on,” she says.

“I eventually came knocking at Jason's door and told him why he needed me in the company.”

Naturally, Nicola got the job and ended up falling in love with Jason too. And the rest is history.

The firm was started by Jason Morrison, who grew up in Snells Beach, went to Warkworth School and Mahurangi College.

Nicola’s work as a rep for The Herald brought her to Warkworth around 30 years ago and she fell in love with the town.

“It just felt right. I immediately knew that I wanted to live here one day and five years later the opportunity came up,” Nicola says.

NEW & NOTED WINTER WRITING WORKSHOPS COMING TO MANGAWHAI Award-winning author Michael Botur is bringing some creative warmth to Mangawhai this winter with a course of creative writing workshops.

Held in the Mangawhai Pioneer Village church hall on all Saturdays during August, the course is focused on fiction, primarily short stories. The course will help new and emerging writers to learn about plot, characterisation, prose, point-of-view and other literary essentials with a focus on ‘keeping it real’ and staying on top of digital publishing trends. The course will emphasise empowerment and confidence, with beginners warmly welcomed.

Local author Judy Tindill (pen-name Jude Thomas) brought the course together and says “artists will be provided with a positive creative, learning environment.”

A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER

Sculptureum opened in April 2017 and since then it’s become a major asset for Matakana.

It’s a unique attraction with Art Galleries, Gardens, animals and other features. It employs about 33 local staff: gardeners, cleaners, maintenance staff, a zoo keeper, restaurant and vineyard staff, events and marketing managers, social media and business managers, all of whom bring their different talents to the business to drive the vision of the owner.

Its creator, Anthony Grant, thinks that in general, New Zealanders aren’t exposed to the diversity of many art forms and the skills of many artists, and he wants people to see how interesting and inspiring their work can be. Works on display come from Australia, the USA, South Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, England, Japan, Greece and other countries. Although Anthony still works long hours as a Barrister, he finds time to travel and new works arrive regularly at his office.

He considers it important that new works are introduced into the project and particular into the Galleries. He says there are now almost twice as many works on display in the Galleries as there were when Sculptureum opened.

He decided to create the venture in June 2005. At that time he was focussed on an Art Gallery that would feature glass art but a lack of funding held him back, and, having a vineyard on the property, together with vineyard staff, he arranged for them to build gardens under his direction.

As the project progressed, he realised he would need hundreds of art works and he ended up buying factories to store them. He has many works that haven’t yet been displayed, some of which haven’t even been taken out of their packaging in 13 years.

The major work in the collection is a huge chandelier made by the famous American glass artist, Dale Chihuly, which has a Gallery all to itself.

Although Anthony originally intended to focus on glass art, as time went on, he decided to display a much wider variety of art forms.

Even so, he says that the glass art on display at Sculptureum is the best display of international glass art in the southern hemisphere.

The Gardens are designed to have seasonal flowerings. At present, daffodils are beginning to emerge and the stream will soon be lined with them. Masses of freesias are also beginning to

emerge. Anthony says, “It’s surprising how, in a city of 1.5m people, there are so few opportunities to see masses of daffodils, freesias, irises, bluebells and other flowers that will be emerging at Sculptureum in the next few weeks”.

Overall he is pleased with the success that the venture has enjoyed to date. It’s now rated as the Second Best Thing To Do in Auckland on Trip Advisor’s list of traveller ranked Attractions (the Sky Tower is number 1). Another rating business – the New Zealand Guide – has recently ranked Sculptureum as the fourth best Art Gallery in the country, ahead of the Wellington and Dunedin Art Galleries and all the provincial Art Galleries.

To top it all, Sculptureum’s restaurant, Rothko, was recently ranked by Metro Magazine as one of the top 50 restaurants in Auckland alongside New Zealand Beef and Lamb’s Award for achieving the highest culinary standard in New Zealand.

Anthony says the rankings reflect the continual drive that is being made to enhance the project by making it a leading tourism destination for Auckland and New Zealand.

THE BRICK BAY SCULPTURE TRAIL The Brick Bay Sculpture Trail is an ever-changing exhibition of over 60 sculptures by leading New Zealand artists, set in the celebrated Brick Bay landscape.

Artworks range in size from pieces suited to the suburban garden through to major works appropriate for urban renewal projects. The Trail is an easy 2km walk suitable for most ages and abilities. Perched above Bennetts of Mangawhai is Scarlet Art Gallery, owned by Johnnie Daley and Becky Burton. “We’ve always been those people who would take a risk to achieve the life we wanted,” Johnnie tells me. “We don’t want to be left regretting a missed chance.”

Scarlet is light and airy with a diverse range of artwork on offer. “Our vision was 20 people could come in and everyone could find something they liked,” Johnnie laughs. “We were also determined to maintain the quality. People are surprised at the standard of work we have here with prints by artists like Michael Smither, Dick Frizzell, Fatu Feu’u and Para Matchitt. We’re also about one third local artists which we’re proud of.”

got in touch to say they were ready to sell. “It wasn’t quite the right timing for us – we had a one-year-old girl, house renovations to do and I was still establishing myself as a full-time artist.”

However, the opportunity to fulfil a dream and use the beautiful gallery space as his studio convinced the couple to launch into this adventure. The first thing they did was rename it in honour of their daughter, Scarlet.

Johnnie is adamant everyone deserves good artwork so he always has something for under $100. “A young boy saved up his pocket money and bought one of my small animal prints. That made me feel so good.”

Art has always been in Johnnie’s blood, right from when his mother first allowed him to draw on his bedroom walls as a boy, but six months at art school was enough for him. “I don’t like analysing every square inch of my work, it’s about just being from the heart.” Instead, he gained a degree in psychology and sociology and worked as a probation officer and counsellor in South Auckland. “I did that for five or six years, but I got a bit desensitised to what was going on and decided it was time to get out.”

After travelling overseas with Becky for five months, Johnnie worked as a coffee roaster for the next four years. Seeing friends who were

achieving their ambitions reawakened the urge to be an artist. “I said to Becky, I want to be an artist. She asked if I could even draw!” He laughs and explains, “I hadn’t done any artwork since I left university.”

With Becky’s support, Johnnie cut down on the coffee roasting work and filled his spare time with art. Johnnie now has twelve thousand followers on Instagram which has provided a healthy source of commissions. “I get asked to draw all sorts of things – planes, plants, hands, dogs, chickens. It’s really nice and keeps me very busy.”

Their goal for the near future is to just do the best they can – with Johnnie’s art, the gallery and the family – and have no regrets. “We hope it will grow and be successful, and it would be awesome if Scarlet could grow up to work at Scarlet Art Gallery one day,” Johnnie smiles.

The high levels of NCEA success is well established, with many students each year gaining well above the national level across all levels of endorsements and many students continuing to study Arts at tertiary level. The College recognises that the study of Art is an integral part of their students’ lives. Students are nurtured to build personal attributes including perseverance, resilience and determination. They learn the process of making and examining art and through this, students can realise the power to inspire change through imagination, creativity and innovation. Students are well catered for with specialist teachers in the Arts from the time they enter the college at year seven through to year thirteen. At both year twelve and thirteen, Art students can select to undertake study in each individual area of the Visual Arts. Whereby, the students are encouraged to develop artistic practices and skills useful for tertiary study and work directly relating to Visual Arts careers or skills transferable to other curriculum areas.

Students in senior Photography are working on many varying thematic areas. “This year we have students looking at the banality of consumerism, through to a visual history of Scandrett Regional Park,” she says.

It is the department’s vision to ensure the delivery of exciting, fresh and relevant programmes and events. One of the events annually is the ‘Top Art Exhibition’ which showcases the top folio boards in the country at Level Three. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience ‘hands on’, the best in New Zealand. “We have been thrilled to have three students picked for this national exhibition: Ellie Young in 2011, Madeleine Cheeseman was featured in 2012 and Lucy Twigg in the 2017 Top Art Folio Exhibition,” says Art Faculty Head, Nyree Norrington.

This year the department has continued to focus on individualised learning pathways linked to each student's interests and strengths.

Students in Level Two Design are exploring campaigns based on Ocean Environmental Awareness. “They visited the beaches in the area, capturing the essence of the environment and now they are creating visual designs for a business to support ecological awareness in the area.”

“Senior Painting has continued to produce amazing and beautiful artworks in which the technical skill just blows you away. Some of the work looks like you are looking at a photo.”

NEW ARTWORKS EMERGING OVER WINTER Brick Bay has some significant new works on the Sculpture Trail this winter that are waiting for you to visit and enjoy! Firstly, the magnificently tall sculpture by Canterbury and Melbourne based artist Phil Price, ‘Chrysalid’.

This work is a feat of engineering, standing 10.8 metres tall, slender as a light post and standing on sloping farmland just before you enter the native bush. Phil Price is a kinetic artist, his sculptures have movement and motion in them. ‘Chrysalid’ has over 21 moving parts which are activated by the wind, these fond-like arms twist and turn in the sky. Price has painted the sculpture the colours of the Hydrangea, the tonal variation of the petals move from blues to violet. Because of Chrysalid’s great height, it can be viewed from different viewpoints on the Brick Bay farm, and looks like something from Dr Seuss, a beautiful whimsical fantasy tree!

The second recent work is a sculpture by Rohan Wealleans, ‘The Psychosis Chamber of the Oracle’. On first view as you enter Brick Bay on Arabella Lane and you make your way down the driveway, you will see a giant hollowed head of Ares, a character in Xena: Warrior Princess. Rohan has repainted the skin a silvery blue tone and the golden hair like a giant walnut. The door is hexagon shaped and has a crystal glass peephole. This work is over two metres high and wide and made from polystyrene, wood, fibreglass, found objects, sheepskin, crystals and paint.

Rohan is known mostly as a painter, who builds up his paintings to a threedimensional sculptural level. You can see his celebrated painting technique inside the sculpture, where he builds up the surface of the paint creating stalactites or little pyramids and volcanoes, then carving into the paint. This is the largest work the artist has ever made, an interactive sculpture evoking fantasy and science-fiction. Brick Bay will be unveiling it after winter and trail walkers will be invited to enter through the porthole door and hang out with ‘The Oracle’.

The new Folly will be officially opened in early September when the winning team of young architects will be announced and featured in Architecture New Zealand. Anyone in the audience who thought they had to go to Wellington to see a stunning array of Wearable Art were proved wrong on the weekend of 19 and 20 July when the Waipu Museum held their annual Art’nTartan Wearable Art Contest and Show in the Celtic Barn.

versatility and vocal range delighted the audience with numbers ranging from Abba to a capella to oratorio. The popular local band Number 8 Wire, joined for the evening by Delwyn Rust-Franklin, provided live music throughout the evening, enhancing many of the design presentations.

The three performances were a sell out and Director Stuart Devenie and his team more than fulfilled their promise to surprise, delight and entertain. ‘Mistress’ of Ceremonies for the evening was local celebrity, Dame Coira McWillie (played by Johnny Givins) who made sure everything went without a hitch. Dame Coira’s interaction with the audience in her inimitable Scottishs accent, assisted by her ‘boys’, Hamish and Fergus, provided a hilarious link between the runway parades of the amazing creations and excellent entertainment from a variety of local performers. These included Emma Couper and Alisa Dodds, whose astonishing performance

The bagpipes were there too, of course, with local bagpipe virtuosos Bain McGregor and David Picketts and the young highland dancers bringing the all important Celtic flavour to the proceedings.

This year designers had a free hand to interpret ‘Wearable Art’ and this inspired an amazing number of stunning entries. Carole Hebberd’s ‘Sakura Metallica’ was a particular favourite drawing gasps of delight from the audience, while Tania Patterson’s sombre and mechanical ‘Hope’ was greeted with loud applause at each performance.

The children, of course, were not forgotten as

seventeen ‘Canny Celtic Creature’ masks paraded in front of proud parents, grandparents and caregivers. Ms Couper’s primary school singing group also appeared to sing ‘The Ghost Of John’.

Competition was fierce for the $16,000 prize money which was shared between the Supreme winner, and section winners together with a host of special prizes including a state-of-the art sewing machine for the best sewn garment.

by Aimee Tomes, was being presented with the large wooden button awarded in memory of Waipu designer, the late Alison Turner, and a glass trophy depicting the unique Waipu Tartan created by glass artist Justin Culina of Parua Bay. WILLING PRISONERS AT TE HĪNAKI WORDS

Mary Chamberlain opens her front door with a warm smile. “Come in, you’re just in time for pancakes!” A minute later I’m at their dining table, bathed in winter sunshine, with her partner Michael Absolum and two of their grandchildren, Oscar and Evie. As Mary makes me an excellent flat white, the kids crack jokes and Michael manages both to laugh at them and fix me with a keenly appraising eye.

That look is the only thing in this bucolic scene which reminds me that I’m sitting with two of the most highly regarded and formidably qualified educational professionals in the country. These two have written curriculums at national and even OECD level; Mary is a member of the NZ Order of Merit for Services to Education.

They’re directors of Evaluation Associates, the company Michael founded in 1999 to provide professional development support to schools and kura. The company now works with a large proportion of those within New Zealand, and they provide support to all our beginning principals.

Michael and Mary have a staff of 90, and they travel a lot, so it’s important to have a peaceful and restorative home.

design concept was based on an ancient pā tauremu or eel weir – two fences of upright posts which led in a V-shape towards a woven hīnaki (eel pot), where the eels were trapped.

“Those posts are my favourite bit of the house I think,” says Michael. Cut from South American purpleheart hardwood, they form majestic twin colonnades and create spectacular perspective.

in the master ensuite at two different levels accommodate Michael’s two metre stature. This is design that’s intelligent and fun.

The ‘hīnaki’ at the narrow end of the house is a screen snug and music room with sleek curves clad, like the living area, in a repeating pattern of irregular vertical cedar strips, which work well with the narrow horizontal windows. It houses a grand piano, played by Mary. She points out a neat detail thought up by one of builders – vertical strip lights concealed within the uprights of the wall. “The shadows they create at night are gorgeous.”

The pair can’t speak highly enough of the main build team: Ken Crosson, Hicks Construction and Inger Electrical. Mary and Michael agree that the 18-month build was remarkably relaxed and problem solving was creative and collaborative.

Other playful features include a loft space for the grandchildren above the kitchen (reached via a beautiful, built-in ladder) and a brutal, doubleangled granite island in the kitchen. “It’s meant to be a fish or eel heading towards the trap at the end – the round sink is its eye,” explains Mary.

The island’s geometric mass is juxtaposed with the sleek David Trubridge light shade floating above it. There’s storage under the stairs accessed by a secret sliding bookshelf. And double sinks

The north-facing site includes sustainable features including a solar array for hot water and concrete under the wide American oak floorboards, which combines with double glazing to ensure the heat pump is rarely used.

But Te Hīnaki wasn’t the house the couple imagined they’d have. “We were very clear with Ken,” says Michael, deadpan. “The one thing we definitely didn’t want was a wooden house. Ken just smiled and said it was his job to ‘stretch clients’ thinking.’ And here we are.”

“What do I love most?” Mary looks down the long, lovely length of her home. “All of it! Every time we come home I pinch myself. I can’t believe we live here.”

Pip has taken the helm in the Mill kitchen – having worked all over the world (including at iconic restaurants like The River Café, First Floor and French House Dining Rooms in London) and her own place, Tabac, in Notting-Hill Gate. Upon returning to Aotearoa and a “life” Pip started her own bespoke catering company. She brings a wealth of experience, creativity and a life-long passion for food with her - lucky us!

Pip’s fresh menu easily spans lunch and dinner, with plates to share or delicious main offerings, finishing with a mouth-watering selection of desserts.

They take bookings for groups of 10+ during the day and any number at night. The café is open Thursday and Friday 12pm-late, and Saturday and Sunday 10am-late, from now until late December.

Late December until March they will open seven days a week.

There will be an update to the pizza menu, and gearing up towards the summer months they will be adding more easy-to-eat gig fare too.

CRAFTING THE 2019 J AWARD

The Annual Junction Awards held in June 2019 allows the community to vote for their favourite organisations, artists, service providers and purveyors of great food and dining experiences.

The 2019 Awards culminated in a gala evening with top local businesses recognised as winners in their categories and a Grand Prize winner taking home the trophy: ‘The J Award’.

That task of crafting the J Award fell to the Head Potter at Morris & James, Ian Foote, who many of you will know for his quirky Tiny Houses and other fabulous one-off creations. Ian has been at Morris & James since 1989 when he originally came on board to work with founder, Ant Morris.

Over the years Ian has thrown thousands of pots and continues to enjoy exploring new ideas and glazes in his design studio. He’s a fundamental part of the Morris & James’ team and an expert when it comes to working the Matakana clay, so he was the perfect choice for this unique and interesting project.

Ian took the Junction’s logo, a striking ‘J’ as the base for his work. Stencilled onto Morris & James clay, which they extract from their own clay field in Matakana, he hand carved the icon from a single block. As he carved, he brought the flat design to life in three dimensions, highlighting the serif crown and gentle curve of the design.

The cut design was then further hand shaped before glazing in matt black for a sophisticated finish appropriate for the awards.

The fired, finished J Award was the highlight of the night for the Grand Prize winner Bammas Surf allowing them to take home a slice of local, handcrafted art as a lasting momento to acknowledge their outstanding business efforts.

WARKWORTH QUILTERS CLUB workforce, leaving them with less time to make things at home. As inexpensive, commercially made clothes and soft furnishings were imported into New Zealand, particularly from the 1980s, there was a further decline in home crafts. However, in the early 2000s a handcraft revival began, and greater numbers of women took up these activities again.

At the Warkworth Quilters’ monthly meetings, enthusiasm for quilting is evident with many beautiful quilts being made for grandchildren and other family members. Every two or three years the group holds an Exhibition of their quilts, the most recent being in April this year. Following this event, the Quilters were able to make financial donations to two local charities, Springboard and AIM (Adults In Motion).

President Glenys Wild said that in addition to making quilts for their own personal use, members donate many quilts each year to such organisations as Homebuilders, Warkworth Hospice, the Birthing Units in Warkworth and Wellsford, and the Maternity Unit at North Shore Hospital. For the first time this year they also gave quilts to Give A Kid A Blanket.

The age-old craft of quilting and patchwork is continuing in Warkworth in the capable hands of the Warkworth Quilters Club. The history of quilts began long before European settlers arrived in the New World. People in nearly every part of the world had used padded fabrics for clothing, bedding, and even armour. With the arrival of the English and Dutch settlers in North America, quilting took on a new life and flourished.

Nineteenth-century British settlers brought domestic textile crafts to New Zealand, including sewing, quilting, spinning and knitting. Historically many women were unpaid housewives and whether it was mending old items or making new ones, sewing and knitting were vital day-to-day tasks.

In the last quarter of the 20th century many women entered the paid

The Oyster Festival Matakana makes its annual return, after two successful years, on Sunday the 6 October, 2019.
