WATERFRONT AT TI POINT – LEGACY PROPERTY

14 and 14A Tatham Road, Ti Point

Presented to the market for the first time since the early 1960’s, Tatham Estate at Ti Point is located on a quiet coastal peninsula within one hour of the Auckland CBD on the eastern coastline between Matakana and Matheson Bay. Divided into two freehold titles totalling over 12 hectares (30 acres) of stunning farm and lifestyle land it includes 190 metres of water frontage to Omaha Bay and has extraordinary views across Omaha Beach and Tawharanui Peninsula. Currently grazed, the land features impressive natural landscape qualities, numerous development destinations and attractive picnic and fishing spots. Adding to the beauty, the family’s original concrete boat ramp at the foot of the farm connects to deep crystal blue rock pools. A favoured location to push out the dinghy or cool off and snorkel in the clear calm water. This vested legacy property presents an opportunity to develop a luxury coastal estate. In the short term, both homes are fit for purpose and occupation while the planning is in process.

Existing improvements include;

14 Tatham Road; 2.7 hectares, two existing dwellings, double garaging with games room, tractor shed, bore, water frontage and two fenced paddocks.

14A Tatham Road; 9.7 hectares, hay barn, stock and holding yards and 9 fenced paddocks.

Tatham Estate presents as an aspirational waterfront land holding where the raw beauty of the landscape is faultless, and the natural privacy is paramount to its character setting. Our homeowner is retiring to a residential home and offers the two properties for sale individually or together. A remarkable opportunity for an astute purchaser.

Empowering artistic entrepreneurs

Tikitibu has been working with New Zealand artisans since 2011, connecting their diverse base of reputable retailers with New Zealand creatives. Their small but very dedicated team, based in the Matakana region, is passionate about supporting, growing and developing the creative sector.

A qualified marine scientist and dive instructor is the last person you’d expect to see behind Tikitibu, however, when you meet Anneliese Jozefek, the visionary behind the brand, you quickly understand that’s exactly why the business has gone from strength to strength - she’s anything but ordinary!

You only have to read a client testimonial to see how impactful she is: "Annaliese is to an artist what Dr Dre is to Eminem - she takes our raw talent and challenges us to crank it up. Her gift of asking the perfect question to bring clarity to a pinging creative brain has helped me focus on the pearls hidden underneath the waves."

This is a story of passion, perseverance, and the harmonious blend of artistry and entrepreneurship. At school Anneliese says her teachers didn’t know what to do with her, as she never fit into a box. Throughout her life, living in different countries and holding a variety of roles, it was her self awareness and lessons learnt that armed her with the driving force to build a business like no other.

A serendipitous moment of facing unemployment after the birth of her son Finlay, Anneliese decided it was time to create her own opportunities to experience the freedom and joy she craved. With little more than a passion for art and no concrete

plan, she embarked on a creative journey crafting wooden gift tags that featured the works of New Zealand artists. Within months she launched her range of products at gift fairs, securing partnerships with 60 retailers in three days! Like most other things in her life Anneliese took it all in her stride, quickly learning the ins and outs of busi ness ownership.

After the arrival of her daughter, Frankie, she knew moving north to Point Wells would offer prospects to grow the business and, more importantly, live in a community that enabled the family to find more balance. It was then that she saw the gap for a unique approach to supporting creative minds; resulting in a shift of focus towards distributing creative brands and helping artists and a growing community of talented creatives transform their artwork into unique merchandise a nd products.

In 2019 her husband Richard joined the business. It’s this partnership that has further strengthened the team, cemented the culture and brought fresh perspectives. And, perhaps more importantly it’s given Anneliese the space and freedom to play to her strengths and seek out growth both at home and beyond the New Zealand market. Her dedication to guiding artists in navigating the complex world of business, bridging the gap between their artistic vision and commercial success, is unquestionable. It was therefore a natural progression for Anneliese to provide more avenues for

Anneliese's captivating presence is underscored by her remarkable humility, while her ongoing journey, poised for both local and international expansion this year, continues to inspire. Her and Richard’s latest venture, One Hour North, is a lifestyle brand that collaborates with talented artists to produce playful, contemporary, and fashion-forward products that are not only stylish but built to last; and serves as further testament to their commitment to supporting artists from both New Zealand and overseas.

Today, Tikitibu boasts a portfolio of over 20 brands, all developed and distributed by Anneliese, Richard and their dedicated team. Their presence can be felt in over 600 stores across the country, with strong partnerships formed at a number of local establishments including Matakana Village Books, Unity, Summer Sessions, Matakana Pharmacy, Caravan Clothing, Caro with Love, Green with Envy, Tina’s Stationary, Kaiwaka Gifts & Wellne ss, Nomad and Home.

Singing the Blues – Kade Banks

Warkworth local, Kade Banks, is anything but blue about his first fulltime contract to play rugby for the Auckland Blues in 2024. “I’ve been in and around the environment for a couple of years, but it’s good to finally be locked in for the next year at least.”

Kade came through First XV rugby at Mahurangi College, but his real step towards a career in rugby began with his selection for the North Harbour Sevens team. From there, it was Under 19s for Mahurangi and North Harbour, and then on to represent North Harbour at National Provincial Championship (NPC) level. “That was my first year of semi-professional rugby and I’ve been doing that since 2020,” he says.

His route to the upper echelons of rugby has not been what Kade considers traditional. “A lot of the players go to one of the ‘big schools’ [for rugby], then straight into the academies or the NPC teams, and then on to the Blues. I came from a small school where you don’t get noticed as much so the Sevens and Under 19s helped me make it into the North Harbour NPC side.”

Having now fulfilled an important goal of getting signed to his favourite Super team, Kade shares his goals for the upcoming season. “I’d like to play a handful of games, but there are a few All Blacks in my position [wing or fullback] which doesn’t make it easy for me. The biggest goal is for the Blues to win the competition and, hopefully, I’ll get my opportunity. Then I just have to play as well a s I can.”

Kade works hard to not think about games during the week prior. “I need to know the moves, and our strategy, but I try not to put myself into the game in my mind. I just make sure that, come gameday, I’m 100% clear what my role is so I’m as confident as I can possibly be.” Once the game is underway, any nerves disappear, he says. “As soon as I carry the ball once or make my first tackle, I realise it’s just another game of rugby and I need to enjoy it.”

Understanding the opposing players is often deemed crucial for success but, as Kade has discovered, there’s a fine line between studying an opponent's tendencies and avoiding overanalysis. “I study my opposition so I know their tendencies, but if, for instance, they’ve got a good fend or step, I don’t want to study it too much because I might start to freak out about it. It’s important not to over - think it.”

Every rugby player dreams of becoming an All Black and Kade is no exception. “I’d love to get there as soon as possible, but, realistically, it’s hard. However, you only need one good season.”

The never-ending supply of new, talented players is also a challenge. “The younger guys are getting better and better, especially the ones from the top schools. From the age of 15, they train like full-time professionals.”

Kade speculates 70-80% of the professional players come from that small pool of specialist rugby schools. “There were a few more steps involved in my route to the Blues, but it makes me appreciate it even more.”

Kade has only one year remaining to complete an accounting/commercial law degree, but that’s on hold for now. He’s also sampled a career in real estate, working for his biggest supporters – mum, Nicole, and dad, Terence. Kade laughs, “I’ve had a taste of work life so I know how much better it is to be running around on a paddock with your mates.”

When it comes to young players coming up the ranks, hoping to fulfil their rugby dreams like Kade is doing, he has this message for them - “When things aren’t going your way, just keep working hard. Work on your game

From red carpet to red apples

Made with New Zealand apples and featuring some very special local apples, APPLETASTIC is introducing new products to our region with its delicious apple butter and applesauces. With apple season upon us, it’s time to celebrate!

If you haven’t heard of apple butter, you’re not alone. This slow cooked apple spread, while very popular in parts of the United States, is rarely found in New Zealand. Founder of APPLETASTIC, Kathy Toon, moved from California to Sn ells Bea ch over seven years ago with her kiwi husband. After a 16 year career as an award-nominated animation film editor she worked on locally made film, Mosley, before turning her hand to Apple-Saucery!

Craving the gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan spread for herself and her family that had been the perfect addition to pancakes, toast, granola or even ice cream throughout her childhood, Kathy decided to make it herself. “In the US applesauce is so much more than a sidekick for pork, it's a really big deal! In the summer and autumn, we ate it daily as a side dish. It's also used in baking and is a very popular, healthy lunchbox item or after school snack for kids of all ages with it being easy on the gut,” Kathy explains. “New Zealand grows a lot of apples, so I thought it was a win-win to put an extra spin on app les in Aotearoa!”

At the beginning of her applesauce journey, Kathy met another local parent while coaching her son’s touch rugby team, Bevan Morrison, who she later found out had grown up on an apple orchard. The Morrison Heritage Orchard in Warkworth is a local treasure where the family has been working the land since the early 1870s, now boasting an orchard with over 27 varieties of apples. Coming soon is a special collaboration with APPLETASTIC celebrating the orchard's rich local history and delicious apples with applesauce batches using their ‘Captain Kidd’ apples. Look out for the Morrison Heritage Orchard sticker for a taste of these delicious local apples!

APPLETASTIC is a purpose-founded business that makes choices that are good for both people and the planet at every step along the way. Choices such as using glass jars with easy to peel off labels, and sourcing local apples whenever possible. As a founding member of The Snells Beach Community Night, Kathy is passionate about connecting the local community and supporting public schools.

APPLETASTIC has been donating to schools from the sale of their very first jar and Kathy hopes as the business grows, more profits can be used to help fund community projects, schools and tree plantings.

APPLETASTIC is currently available to purchase at The Matakana Market, The Food Market in Snells Beach, Charlie's Gelato and The Matakana Smokehouse. Your tastebuds will thank you!

Organically shared

What began as a modest endeavour to coordinate organic produce purchases through a co-op quickly blossomed into a full-fledged organic haven.

Rem and Rose Organics is a symbol for community-driven change nestled in the heart of Matakana Country Park.

In an era where convenience often trumps sustainability and quality, Natalia's vision for Rem and Rose Organics embodies a commitment to local sourcing, community support, and sustainable living. From the charming rustic decor of the shop, featuring wicker baskets and wooden crates, to the thoughtfully curated selection of goods, every detail reflects Natalia's unwavering dedication to her ideals.

At its core, Rem and Rose Organics is a celebration of local craftsmanship and ingenuity. Natalia's own handcrafted balms, salves, oils, and tinctures share shelf space with products from other local makers, creating a vibrant tapestry of offerings.

But Natalia's impact extends beyond the confines of her shop. By prioritising partnerships with local growers and artisans, she not only ensures the freshest produce and goods for her customers but also fosters a sense of interconnectedness within the community. With 40% of produce currently coming from the Rodney and Kaipara region, Natalia’s goal is to get this to 90% by the end of this year.

Expanding her offerings to include essentials like bulk goods from Ceres Organics and, as of April, an Ecostore Refillery, Natalia ensures that waste is minimised and sustainability is prioritised. Each jar of jam, chutney, or pesto is made from surplus produce by Craig in Leigh, along with a range of dried produce crafted from excess fruit and vegetables, underscores Natalia's commitment to sustainability and affordability.

Indeed, affordability lies at the heart of Natalia's mission. In a world where the cost of organic living often feels prohibitive, she strives to make quality produce and goods accessible to all. By avoiding excessive margins in favour of fair pricing and by sourcing from smaller, local growers, whenever possible, Natalia is democratising organic living one sale at a time.

For Natalia, Rem and Rose Organics is more than just a business venture – it's a labour of love fuelled by a desire to provide her children and her community with the very best food. Nurturing relationships with local growers, producers and makers Natalia embodies the spirit of reciprocity and mutual support that enriches our community.

Rem and Rose Organics is located at the Matakana Country Park and open Friday to Sunday and offers weekly local orders with delivery or in-store collection.

Sowing seeds of restoration

Local horticulturist Rhonda Whitehead has dedicated her life to plants in our region, drawn to their allure since childhood. In both her professional and personal life, she immerses herself in cultivating, nurturing, and enjoying the world of plants.

“Growing native plants, especially for restoration purposes, is my passion. It’s amazing how quickly an area can be transformed by planting. The birds will arrive as soon as there is a tree for them to perch on and feed from,” Rhonda shares.

Her nursery, ReForest Native Plants, is a wholesale nursery based on Jones Road, Omaha, and is renowned for its healthy, strong and locally-suited specimens. “My focus is selling to others in the plant industry and to private customers requiring over 50 native plants,” Rhonda says.

“Restoring and enriching our local habitat through planting starts at the very beginning. Seeds are eco sourced, meaning they are collected from wild plants growing naturally in the area. I can trace each plant in the nursery back to its source,” Rhonda explains. “E co sourci ng our seeds helps ensure the cultivation of a vigorous plant that is well adapted to thrive locally.”

After three decades in the horticulture industry, Rhonda established ReForest Native Plants in 2019, enabling her to cover all aspects of the plant growing process, from seed collection, potting, plant care, dispatch, and deliveries.

Plants from ReForest are suited to a range of applications, including boundary and privacy plantings, streams and wetlands, drainage fields for sewage systems and large-scale land revegetation projects. “I love that by replanting these areas they can be transformed from degraded and broken land into beautiful areas and quickly these spaces become home to native birds, fungi, and insects,” Rh onda notes.

Rhonda specialises in growing smaller ready to plant sizes for quicker establishment and higher survival rates. “The benefits of a smaller plant are reduced costs and better adaptation,” she emphasises. As a commercial nursery Rhonda welcomes enquiries via email, extending her expertise to all plant enthusiasts.

Gardening calendar

As summer fades into autumn, it's time for our gardens to rest after a long hot summer. It’s also time to get out in your garden and prepare for the next planting season. Focus on gentle tasks like pruning and harvesting while getting the ground ready for winter crops. Nurture your garden with care and creativity and embrace the changing seasons! This months gardening calendar is brought to you by Warkworth Gardening Club; welcoming new members, they encourage you to get in touch.

Plant

Prepare your ground for planting stone and pip fruits by readying your holes, adding manure and fertiliser, and having stakes organised.

Consider planting:

• Strawberries

• Winter potatoes

• Brassicas

• Carrots

• Winter soup and stew vegetables

For vegetables that are still growing, keep them moist, manured, well-mulched and give them a foliar feed, such as liquid seaweed and blood and bone, every few weeks. Keep white butterflies at bay with derris dust.

Flowers

It’s all about spring bulbs at this time of year. Before planting, pop them in the fridge for 2-3 weeks to give them a false winter. Plant in well-drained, fertilised soil to the depth of the bulb, with that same amount of soil above it. Keep the area weeded and enjoy a colourful Spring!

Mass planting is always much more impactful than single, strategically placed bulbs. When they finish flowering let the leaves die off before cutting them back, this is what feeds the bulb for next year. Every two years dig up your bulbs and divide them.

Food

Winter potatoes are good to plant from late April. Make sure you use the winter variety, available from most garden centres, and that they’re sprouting. Your soil should be well worked and aerated.

Potatoes can be shallow planted in a bucket or tyre by using a combination of lawn clippings, mulch and manure. Potatoes grow off the main stalk so encourage that stalk growth by continually mounding it. After 2-3 months, your bucket or tyre will be full and you’ll have plenty of potatoes. Once the plant starts to yellow off, start harvesting and enjoy!

Top Tips

Feed your citrus plants every 3-4 months. Having endured heat and rain the last few months a lot of minerals have been washed out of the soil, so replenishment is key.

You’re the boss in your garden and if things aren’t producing or have had a poor year you make the call on how hard to prune or to remove - often that first loss is the best loss. Be ruthless!

Family legacy returns to Leigh Sawmill

Twenty eight years on, a bittersweet surprise has occurred in the little village of Leigh. The Guinness family have opened the doors of the Leigh Sawmill Café once again.

Established in 1996 under the arms of Grattan and Marguerite Guinness, spearheaded by chef daughter Annabelle Guinness, along with Edward, Benjamin, and Nicola Guinness, the Leigh Sawmill is known as a food destination and iconic national music venue. From humble beginnings as a roadside pop up, the Leigh Sawmill has been through many waves of success and trial, and as of December 2023 has made a strong comeback to its former status.

In 2018, Sawmill patriarch Grattan tragically drowned at Goat Island beach. Brothers and Managing Directors Ed and Ben Guinness

decided to take a break from hospitality and leased the restaurant to an external operator with the hopes of new energy and high-end management. Through the trials of Covid and the weather of 2022, the Leigh Sawmill was a long way from its previous operation. In an unanticipated forfeit of the lease, the keys were handed back to the brothers in November 2023, who quickly rallied a team to open the doors again in time for the su mmer season.

Former key staff members returned to execute the reopening, including Susan Kaiser, Tylah Watts, and Saffron and Ella Guinness

from the next generation of grandchildren. Matt Ross and Tristan Abbot of Auckland based Candela, supreme winner of the Metro Restaurant Awards 2023, designed a summer menu of light sharing style dishes alongside the favourite original Sawmill pizzas. The fresh, quality, kai moana centred menu has been celebrated once again by locals and summer beach goers. Alongside sold out gigs including Australian band Coterie and New Zealand favourites No Cigar, a slick rebrand and renovated accommodation, the Leigh Sawmill has the energy that it once had, again providing a thriving community hub as well as a prime north Auckland destination.

Preparing to buckle up for winter the Leigh Sawmill is streamlining its autumn menu and continuing to book gigs and events most weekends, with suites also available for weekend getaways. For those who have not yet returned, the Guinness family warmly welcomes you back. Open Thursday to Sunday, check online for opening hours, weekly specials and upcoming gigs or to enquire about weddings, events and corporate functions.

Black Swamp coastal oasis

When Maris and Logan Holt purchased land on the infamous Black Swamp Road in Mangawhai they knew they needed to design a home that would showcase and enhance the pristine beauty of the section's all-encompassing protected native bush.

24 LIFESTYLE
Keeping it clean. Pure and simple. Leaders in full-service wastewater treatment solutions 0800 SYSTEM | www.rwts.co.nz Let us enhance your new home with an environmentally Friendly, high quality water treatment system that allows you and your family to ‘Flush and forget’.

A true family affair, Logan is a structural engineer with RS Engineerin g and completed the mockup house designs himself using Cedreo (3D Home Design Software), while all the interior design was done by Maris. The build was completed by father and son, and was the last build by Logan’s dad, Murray Holt, before he retired. By working with Logan's dad, the couple were able to continually evolve their design plans, ensuring all the finer details were exactly right as the b uild progressed.

Creating easy visual flow and a soft, warm atmosphere, the Holts wanted to feature New Zealand grown timber details in the exterior and interior design of the house. The cladding is a combination of Ironsand Colorsteel as well as Northland grown Japanese Cedar. The Japanese Cedar was a budget and environmentally friendly choice, but visually-stunning option for the couple as an alternative to other premium cedar products. The framing and decking was also locally sourced and supplied by Garth Mortensen at North Sawn Lumber i n Ruakaka.

Going the extra mile the couple included a fully ducted and centralised heating and air-conditioning system, allowing temperatures to be set for each room in the house for ultimate comfort any time of year. This was an especially important feature given the significant role glass plays in the home. Large floor to ceiling windows frame and showcase the surrounding bush line while oversized sliding doors in the open lounge and dining area as well as the master and main guest room enhance the home's all important indoor-outdoor flow.

One of the couples favourite spaces in the house is the ensuite bathroom with its floor to ceiling views of the bush through a full height window. The ensuite also features French doors that open up to stairs leading to the couple's six-person Finnish style barrel sauna which Logan built from a kitset pack from Alpine Spas.

The home includes a deck that nearly matches the size of the house, kitted out with all teak furniture and a sunken fire pit to enjoy the cooler evenings in Mangawhai. Logan masterfully designed the deck shape with one thing in mind - ensuring their son, Mason, can one day skate the deck from end to end continuously without a single kick turn!

A testament to the meticulous design process, Logan built a scale model of the house with a beer box to plan the dimensions of the roof, hoping to maximise sunlight during the year while also keeping direct sunlight out of the bedrooms and off their timber floors. For several months the model would sit out in the sunlight at different times of the day, ensuring they had all the angles right. The couple still marvel at how well it works…rain, sun, cloud, winter, summer, spring or autumn, the roof design caters to all weathers.

The Holts have recently opened their home while they spend family time travelling in their 1978 Lightweight Chevron caravan, giving holiday goers the opportunity to enjoy their slice of paradise and sec luded oasis.

Making waves in fashion

Beloved local surf brand, Gypsea Sol, made waves earlier this year with the launch of their inaugural Capsule Collection. Danica shares her vision for the collection and the success of the brand's debut into clothing and accessories.

Gypsea Sol’s sole mission has always been to foster feeling as free by the sea as possible; which they’ve achieved with their world-first range of beach-beauty essentials, including the bestselling After-Ocean Hair Repair and Beach-Babe Body Butter, made locally in Aotearoa.

Now expanding the brand's repertoire to include ethically sourced and sustainable fashion items, lovingly handmade by a small family tailor in Indonesia, the Gypsea Sol Capsule Collection has been designed to offer seamless transitions from sandy shores to vibrant bars in me re moments.

Drawing inspiration from the ocean, sand, desert, and clay, the collection's textures and hues are intended as an ode to Mother Nature's untamed beauty. Designed for freespirited women who revel in barefoot adventures in the sand, each piece encapsulates a deep connection to the earth and the sea.

Comprising four summer-holiday staples, each with a unique twist - The Free by the Sea maxi has a flowing silhouette with a stunning low back and charming ruffle detail, eliminating the need for a bralette. The Coastal Cowgirl Hat is adorned with a hand-sewn rim of cowrie shells, intended to serve as a piece of the ocean that travels with the wearer. The Mermaid Treasure Necklace, a unique ensemble of shells and beads ensuring no two necklaces are alike, echoes the diversity of marine treasures. And finally the Coastal Crochet Bag, ideal for carrying Gypsea Sol's signature beach-beauty essentials, ensures a seamless transition from beachside to bar.

Designed with versatility in mind, the pieces can be worn individually or effortlessly mixed and matched for a myriad of occasions, promoting a minimalist approach to fashion without compromising on quality or style. And, of course, nothing complements these ensembles better than bare feet for the ultimate bohemian vibe!

Danica’s hope is that the Gypsea Sol Capsule Collection inspires a wardrobe of considered, high-quality pieces that will last, and ensures its wearers feel free by the sea.

Releasing to sell-out success, Gypsea Sol fans are eagerly awaiting the restock of several key pieces, including the Coastal Cowgirl Hat that sold out within sixteen minutes. Support local and check out the current range, plus stay tuned for all restock details.

A new era in dentistry

As clinicians, Lisa and Jelena have spent years working in a dental industry that prioritises treatment over prevention. These two pioneering dentists want to change that…

After working together on Auckland’s North Shore the duo built The Hygienists & Co based on the idea that a completely new patient experience could make ‘going to the dentist’ a more positive experience.

With a combined 35 years experience they’ve had plenty of time to listen to their patients and understand what’s most important to them. The outcome being to deliver affordability, simplicity and better outcomes, equalling bigger smiles!

Together, Lisa and Jelena provide a personalised approach to your dento-facial health, with a preventionfocused, value-based care model. Their goal is to help you look and feel great, catching issues early before they turn into big problems. Because they focus on preventative care, they don’t do restorative dentistry like fillings or extractions, so there’ll be no expen sive surprises.

Jelena moved to New Zealand from Serbia 20 years ago and graduated from Auckland University of Technology in 2009 as an oral health therapist. Her thorough, gentle approach combined with a touch of humour has resulted in a loyal following of clients. Her clinic has all the latest equipment you would expect to see along with some extras, including Airflow technology.

Nature’s Tribute: Weaving Red Poppies and Rosemary into the ANZAC Tapestry of Memory

In our New Zealand gardens, where the native flora paints a picture of tranquillity, a common herb carries a profound legacy far beyond its culinary use.

Rosemary, with its fragrant aroma, stands as a symbol of remembrance, intertwined with the iconic red poppy, in commemorating those who served and sacrificed in war. As ANZAC Day approaches, it is vital to explore the historical and emotional resonance of these symbols.

The red poppy, a poignant emblem of ANZAC Day, finds its origins in the bloodsoaked fields of Flanders during World War I. Amidst the devastation of war, red poppies flourished, creating a stark contrast against the backdrop of conflict. This imagery, captured in Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields”, resonated globally, leading to the adoption of the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope amidst sorrow.

In New Zealand, the red poppy is not just a symbol of the past but a living memory of the bravery and sacrifice of the ANZAC soldiers. Annually, as the nation commemorates ANZAC and Armistice Day, these red blooms are worn with a mix of pride and sorrow, serving as a poignant reminder of the cost of war.

Rosemary, commonly found in New Zealand gardens, has recently emerged as another significant emblem in these commemorations. Since ancient times, this aromatic herb has been associated with memory and remembrance. It’s an ancient symbol of fidelity and remembrance, making it a fitting commemorative symbol to remember those who served and those who died. The connection to ANZAC Day is both symbolic and historical. On the rugged hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula, where the ANZAC soldiers faced one of their most formidable battles, wild rosemary grew in abundance. As the soldiers entrenched themselves in the battle at Gallipoli, the scent of rosemary was a constant presence, intertwining with their experience of war.

In Australia, wearing rosemary has become a traditional symbol of remembrance and commemoration. On ANZAC Day, Australians often wear a small sprig of rosemary, usually pinned onto a coat lapel, near the heart, or held in place by medals. This act of remembrance connects people not only to the sacrifices of the ANZAC soldiers but also to a shared heritage of resilience and courage.

As we reflect on the significance of the red poppy and rosemary, it’s crucial to remember that these are not just relics of the past. They are living, breathing reminders of our history, woven into the fabric of our nations. In their vibrant beauty and fragrant aroma, they continue to serve as powerful symbols of remembrance, honouring those who have fallen and reminding us of the enduring spirit of resilience and hope that defines both New Zealand and Australia.

Matakana War Memorial ANZAC Day service starts at 10am.

Calendar Girls

26 April - 4 May | Warkworth Town Hall

Lee-Anne Scarth and the Warkworth Theatre Group are gearing up for an unconventional fundraiser, stripping down to raise vital funds for Harbour Hospice. They'll be staging Tim Firth’s beloved screenplay, Calendar Girls, inspired by a true story of Yorkshire women who posed nude for charity. Lee-Anne, playing ‘calendar girl’ Cora, notes parallels between the script and their lives, as many have been touched by hospice care. Funds raised will support local patient care equipment needs.

For most of the cast, including Lee-Anne who joined the group 21 year s ago, this will be the first time they’ve bared this much flesh in front of a live audience. So how comfortable do they feel about going nude – or at least down to flesh-coloured underwear – in the name of charity?

“We’re all a bit nervous,” Lee-Anne admits. “But we’re excited too, and we’ve got some beautiful props that will be strategically placed. Rehearsals are very much closed until we perfect the placement of those props!”

Despite nerves, the cast are committed to the cause. Director Richard Hutchinson praises the play's humour and poignant storytelling, resonating with audiences. Warkworth Theatre Group, active for 50 years, annually donates proceeds to charity. They'll contribute 10% of ticket sales and raffle earnings to Harbour Hospice. Puhoi-based spirits company, Batch10, is even crafting a special gin blend for the event, with proceeds benefitting the cause. Nathan Haines Solo DJ Live Set

Friday 5 April, 8pm

Leigh Sawmill Café

Nathan Haines, the innovative saxophonist and producer renowned for seamlessly blending jazz and dance music with his albums ‘Squire For Hire’ and ‘Sound Travels’, is coming to Leigh Sawmill with a club set that will have the dance floor pumping!

It's your first time playing at the Sawmill for over 10 years, what makes it such a special venue for you?

I have played the Sawmill many times over the last 20 years and it's always been very special. We try to get to Leigh or go snorkelling at Goat Island when visiting from London. It's amazing to bring overseas friends here!

We hear you have a special opening act for your live set at the Sawmill?

My wife, DJ Jaimie Webster Haines, will be doing a special warm-up set for me to set the vibe in the room! She's played many festivals and will serve up the perfect helping of dance music to get the crowd in the mood.

You have your 11th solo album coming out in August, can you tell us a bit about it?

I've been working on ‘Notes’ since 2014 so there is a lot of life in this album! I started with my dear friend, DJ and producer Phil Asher who produced ‘Squire For Hire’ and ‘Sound Travels’, about 4 years ago. We hadn't worked together since 2003 so it

was a great feeling. Sadly Phil passed away suddenly 3 years ago and I had to finish what we had started. I contacted friends, beat makers and musicians worldwide, and the result is ‘Notes’.

It's a continuation of what I started with Phil - a mix of dance music with proper songwriting, melody and production. We only ever wanted to emulate our heroes and be part of the wonderful community in the underground international dance music scene. I am continuing this story and honouring the massive legacy Phil left us with the work we did together and the influence he had on the scene.

As well as your new album, what else have you been working on lately?

I performed at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival in October last year, which was amazing! I will be performing with my band in London in August to release the album, which means I will be out of New Zealand for a while with my family. I run a recording studio in Auckland and am working with a lot of musicians on new projects...always writing and working. With this latest album I really applied myself to record and mix and the last 10 years has been a true journey of self discovery.

Tickets to Nathan Haines Solo DJ Live Set at Leigh Sawmill are on sale now.
