Puhoi + Mahurangi West Puhoi, a charming village, serves as the gateway to the region, offering a tantalising glimpse of the delights that lie ahead. Settled in 1863 by Bohemian immigrants, Puhoi has preserved its Bohemian atmosphere and culture from its origins in the Czech Republic. Nestled amidst rolling farmland, native bush, and the Puhoi River, the village showcases its pioneering history through the iconic Puhoi Pub and local museum, displaying fascinating artefacts and photographs spanning 150 years. Just a short distance north, Mahurangi West boasts three stunning Pohutukawafringed bays – Sullivans Bay, Mita Bay, and Te Muri Bay – perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply unwinding. Paired with open pastures and historical sites, this offers the ultimate Kiwi experience.

Photo: Puhoi Town Library

10

Puhoi River The serene and sheltered Puhoi River stretches for 8km until it reaches Wenderholm Regional Park. Its gentle meandering towards the ocean makes it an ideal setting for a leisurely day out on the water. If you’re looking to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, you can rent kayaks from Puhoi village. The convenient arrangement allows you to paddle down the river and, upon reaching Wenderholm, be transported back to Puhoi just in time for a well-deserved drink. The best part is that for a significant portion of the journey, you’ll be travelling with the tide, minimising the effort required until you approach Wenderholm.

Bike & walking tracks

In Mahurangi West’s regional park, you’ll find three fantastic walks that explore various corners of the area. These walks lead you to the remote beaches of the peninsula, providing stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf and the Coromandel. Each track takes around two to three hours, and you can even combine them for an extra-long adventure. PU H O I +MMAATH AU KR AA NN A G I WE S T

The Puhoi Track, part of the Te Araroa Trail that runs through the country, spans 5km (one way). This trail meanders through native bush and along the ridgeline, offering glimpses of the Puhoi Valley. After your hike, we recommend finishing at the Puhoi Domain end, where you can conveniently head to the pub for some refreshing beverages. For off-road mountain biking enthusiasts, there’s an 85km loop starting from Puhoi village. This challenging route, with over 1000m of elevation, ventures through rural farmland and natural bush as it takes you towards the West Coast, ultimately reaching the beautiful Kaipara Harbour.

Beaches, parks & camping

Mahurangi West is renowned for its stunning remote beaches, which are worth the trek to get there. Te Muri Beach, which is located at the southern tip of Mahurangi Regional Park, is perfect for those seeking solitude and a break from the summer crowds. Reaching Te Muri Beach requires either a boat trip or a hike from Otarawao Bay (Sullivans Bay) during low tide. Although a basic campground is available for tents near the beach, it’s important to ensure you have all your necessities with you, as forgetting something would entail a 1.3km trek back to your car. Otuawao Bay (Mita Bay) is another beach accessible only by foot or boat. This peaceful haven is a 1.8km walk from Sullivans Bay car park. Upon reaching Tungutu Point, you can traverse the rocky path, accessible only two hours before and after low tide. On arrival you’ll discover a breathtaking and secluded cove adorned with white sand and native bush, and the very basic campsite ensures a quiet and often exclusive camping experience.

Holidaying with families Kayaking along the Puhoi River offers the perfect family adventure. Whether you prefer single or double kayaks, there’s an option to suit everyone. For families, a Canadian canoe is available, accommodating two adults and two children. Upon reaching Wenderholm, the kids can have a blast swimming and playing amidst the beautiful Pohutukawa trees.

Shopping

In this area, there are limited options for purchasing your essentials. Puhoi has a well-stocked general store, but for most necessities, you’ll need to head to Warkworth. However, there’s a delightful opportunity to explore local offerings at the Puhoi village market day, held on the last Sunday of the month during the warmer seasons. Here, you can indulge in local arts and crafts, artisanal food, and fresh produce from the region.

Otarawao Bay (Sullivans Bay) is the only beach in Mahurangi West accessible by vehicles, and offers picturesque views of Lagoon Bay in Mahurangi East across the water. Booking in advance during the summer season is crucial as the number of sites is limited and they fill up rapidly.

Shopping With its perfect blend of popular retail chains and charming independent boutiques and galleries, Warkworth serves as the central hub of the area with a comprehensive array of businesses and services, including branches of major national banks, a post office, an information centre, and three large supermarkets. Beyond the necessities lie numerous inviting cafes, chic boutiques, and captivating galleries. Events

Every year in spring, the Kowhai Festival comes alive for a month, coinciding with the blooming of vibrant yellow Kowhai Trees that grace the town and river. This lively event, organised by volunteers, offers a plethora of exciting activities throughout October. From the Family Day Out, Mahurangi Riverside Vibes, Great Debate, to an enchanting outdoor movie night extravaganza, there’s something for everyone. Mahurangi Riverside Vibes, set along the river, entices visitors with delectable artisan food and wine while a lively stage showcases live music throughout the day. The family day out promises a fantastic experience for families and kids, brimming with games, rides, and the much-anticipated return of the famous Kowhai Festival Raft Race. The relatively new Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights has quickly gained popularity on the Warkworth social calendar. During the day, the Warkworth wharf transforms into a wonderland for children, featuring amusements, rides, face painting, an ice skating rink, and tempting food trucks. As the sun sets, the town centre becomes illuminated with mesmerising laser lights and music shows that continue into the evening. Another event cherished in the local community is the Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show, held annually at the local showgrounds. Showcasing local music, delightful cuisine, and a free Fun Zone for children, the A&P Show offers a fun-filled day for the entire family and an opportunity to gain insight into the local farming way of life.

Parks + walking tracks Located just south of Warkworth, Parry Kauri Park is a fantastic destination for a delightful picnic lunch. Just a short detour from State Highway One, this park boasts the distinction of being home to the two tallest kauri trees on the east coast of New Zealand. Encompassing 8.5 hectares, the park features dense native bush that has thrived for thousands of years. Visitors can explore a variety of loop tracks, ranging from 10 to 45 minutes in duration, weaving through the enchanting landscape. These walks are suitable for the entire family, enhanced by informative signs that enlighten guests about the native trees and birdlife inhabiting the grounds. For those with an inclination for history, the Warkworth and District Museum can also be found within the park. Here, you’ll find captivating historical displays, photographs, and artefacts harkening back to the kauri gum-digging days of the region, including impressive pieces of kauri gum.

Kowhai Park, situated at the southern end of Warkworth near Hill Street, offers picturesque trails with some elevated boardwalks and paths to protect against kauri dieback, allowing visitors to explore the mossy kilns dating back to 1884. The track features abundant native flora, including the area’s largest matai trees, and showcases weta houses built by the local community. Finish your gentle walk at Heritage Lane, where you can choose to return through the bush or exit onto Matakana Road.

Cement Works Although not near the beach, Warkworth has a freshwater swimming hole at the Warkworth Cement Works, which is located a short drive from the town centre on Wilson Road. A sunny day can be spent picnicking on the water’s edge surrounded by the historic ruins of what was once the Southern Hemisphere’s first Portland cement manufacturer. However, a word of warning to those with small children, the swimming hole gets deep straight away, so be sure to pack the floaties.

Sandspit/Brick Bay The first hidden gem on your journey awaits at Brick Bay, accessible via the road to Sandspit. As you make your way to this tranquil spot, you’ll pass through the bustling marina of Sandspit, where you have the option to hop on a ferry and cruise over to Kawau Island. Additionally, Sandspit offers an excellent playground, catering to kids of all ages, and vast green grassy areas to frolic around. Should you wish to prolong your stay, there’s a beachfront holiday park in the vicinity. Venture further along Brick Bay Drive and you’ll be rewarded with a tranquil bay featuring expansive green spaces, ideal for leisurely picnics as well as a rope swing for the kids. Brick Bay is equipped with public toilets.

Snells Beach

Snells Beach is a long curved beach with views out to Kawau, and kids can scoot or bike on the path that runs along the waterfront from playground to playground. There are public toilets in a few spots along the way. High-tide swimming is best, but low tide reveals plenty of rock pools to explore. There are a few eateries, a pub, a small convenience store, and a garage.

Algies Bay Algies Bay awaits at our next destination. It’s renowned for its spectacular sunrise views, with its eastward orientation offering the perfect vantage point. For the ultimate sunrise experience, head to the summit of Highfield Garden Reserve. After greeting the new day, make your way down to visit the friendly resident donkeys – don’t forget to bring them a wholesome treat to enjoy such as carrots and apples. Highfield Reserve offers several pathways leading to the tranquil shores of Algies Bay, ensuring safe and easy access. The bay is at its finest approximately two hours before and after high tide, making it the ideal time to fully savour its beauty and serenity.

Scandrett Regional Park

Only 3km beyond Algies Bay, you’ll find the enchanting Scandrett Regional Park, offering a captivating glimpse into Kiwi history. The park not only houses Maori pa sites but also features meticulously-restored original homestead and farm buildings dating back to the late 1800s, providing a delightful experience for visitors.

Martins Bay

Martins Bay attracts a large number of boating enthusiasts due to the convenience of launching directly from the beach, as well as a water-ski lane located at the northern end. The bay also offers ample shade thanks to the majestic Pohutukawa trees, providing a perfect setting for a day of relaxation. Additionally, there is a wonderful holiday park situated by the beach, equipped with a wide range of amenities catering to both boating enthusiasts and families alike. 36

Scotts Landing

Scotts Landing’s charm begins right at the entrance, where a picturesque boardwalk leads you to the historic Scott Homestead, offering a delightful glimpse of the past. This sheltered bay provides a serene view of Mahurangi West. If you plan your visit during low tide, you can even take a walk to the quaint Casnell Island and enjoy some exploration. However, be mindful of the tide’s timing to avoid getting stranded on the island.

Beaches, parks and camping

The Mahurangi Peninsula boasts an abundance of beaches and parks, offering a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Just a brief drive past Snells Beach lies Algies Bay. This charming bay benefits from the protective embrace of the Tawharanui Peninsula and Kawau Island, providing a sheltered environment with calm and crystal-clear waters. Swimmers can safely enjoy the waters for three hours on either side of high tide, making it an idyllic spot for aquatic adventures. Martins Bay, popular for its boat launch straight from the beach, has a holiday park enjoyed by boating enthusiasts and families alike. Scandrett Regional Park is ideal for those seeking a unique experience. Auckland Regional Council offers three beautifully-restored Kiwi baches for rental, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the quintessential Kiwi summer holiday. There are also four self-contained vehicle spots, allowing one-night stays each. So whether you choose a bach or vehicle spot, Scandrett Regional Park promises an unforgettable journey into New Zealand’s rich heritage and natural beauty. With the sparkling waters just steps away from your doorstep and the serene farm landscape behind you, it’s a perfect retreat.

Families

The Highfield Garden Reserve, situated in Algies Bay, serves as a donkey sanctuary and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Kawau Bay and the Hauraki Gulf. While the little ones might not be as captivated by the scenery, they will undoubtedly enjoy feeding the donkeys. Don’t forget to bring along some carrots and green vegetables for this delightful experience. At Snells Beach, the waterfront is a fantastic spot for children. The beach boasts a convenient walkway that stretches along its length, providing an ideal path for scooters and bikes to add to the fun. 37

Sandspit is home to a family-friendly holiday park right on the beachfront and safe waters of the tidal bay – complete with pontoon for the kids. As you venture further along the peninsula, you come to Snells Beach. Here, you can enjoy excellent swimming during a few hours around high tide. Moreover, when the tide recedes, the shallow waters create a perfect playground for young ones. Along the beach, you’ll find a couple of designated areas where self-contained vehicles can camp, adding to the allure of this picturesque location.

Kawau Island Kawau Island, one of Hauraki Gulf ’s largest isles, sits a short boat ride from Sandspit Wharf. Its charm lies in being close enough for a day trip from Auckland, yet distant enough to feel removed from the city’s bustle. Formerly abandoned by Maori tribes, it transformed into a bustling mining settlement and later served as the private residence of Sir George Grey, one of New Zealand’s first Governors. Today, a small population of permanent residents and vacation homes grace the historic island. With a unique microclimate and an abundance of activities, Kawau is ideal for a memorable day trip or an extended week away.

Photo: North Cove - by Gary Woolf

Mansion House The Department of Conservation manages the Kawau Island Historic Reserve, which encompasses 10 percent of the island. It was established to safeguard the grand home and sub-tropical gardens that once belonged to Sir George Grey. Acquired by Grey in 1862, the Mansion House was created by expanding the former mine manager’s dwelling. Now splendidly restored with an array of antique furnishings, the stately home sits gracefully on the waterfront of Mansion House Bay, drawing numerous visitors. The gardens surrounding the building offer a lunch spot and are inhabited by wallabies, weka, and peacocks. 42

Royal Mail Run

A fantastic way to explore and discover Kawau Island is through the Royal Mail Run, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest mail-run by water. It offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about the island and its inhabitants. Departing from Sandspit at 10:30am daily, the ferry circumnavigates the island, delivering mail to local residents. Following this, you can opt for a BBQ lunch on board or bring a picnic to savour on dry land. It’s a delightful way to immerse yourself in the island’s charm and get to know its vibrant community.

Walking

Kawau Island offers a delightful opportunity for exploring on foot, with numerous tracks meandering through the landscape, leading to historical sites and secluded beaches. Many of the most favoured walks conveniently commence at Mansion House Bay. These trails vary in length, ranging from a quick 10 to 20 minute stroll to neighbouring beaches and scenic lookouts, to a more extensive 2.5-hour round trip to the captivating historic coppermine. The path to the coppermine will guide you through shaded tracks and past tranquil, remote beaches, eventually arriving at the intriguing remains of the old engine house, a fascinating piece of history to behold. Beaches, parks and camping

Kawau Island is adorned with numerous beaches and coves, each with its unique charm, though accessibility varies. While most of the island is privately owned, beaches within the historic reserve can be reached through public walking tracks. For more secluded spots, one must explore by boat or kayak. Vivian Bay, situated at the northern tip of Kawau Island, boasts a pristine white sandy beach and is a popular destination, especially during the summer season. The bay is graced by a waterfront restaurant, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely day. As one of the scheduled ferry stops from Sandspit, it offers convenient access. Moreover, it provides a safe haven during southerly winds, making it suitable for anchoring boats. The only conventional campsite on Kawau is Camp Bentzon, located in North Cove. Primarily used for school camps during weekdays, it is open for group bookings on weekends. The camp offers accommodation for up to 120 people in bunk beds and provides various amenities such as kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, and a fitness trail. A well-equipped commercial-sized kitchen and BBQ facilities are also available. K AMWA A TUA KI SALNAAN D

For an extended stay on Kawau, renting one of the many privately-owned holiday homes scattered across the island is recommended. These holiday homes provide a cosy and comfortable retreat amidst the island’s natural beauty.

Savour On Kawau, the dining-out scene offers just three charming options. Before planning your visit, we recommend checking the restaurant opening hours, as they may vary depending on the time of year.

Shopping Kawau Island has no supermarket, so if you plan to stay for more than a day, it’s a good idea to ensure you have enough groceries before departing from the mainland. In case you forget anything or run out of essentials, you can find general store items at the Kawau Boating Club in Bon Accord Harbour.

Matakana Matakana Village has long been a vibrant and bustling hub. Back in the mid-1800s, it made a name for itself through timber milling and shipbuilding, harnessing the resources of the Matakana River. Over the years, the town flourished into a thriving rural community with a focus on agriculture and dairy farming. Today, the site of the old timber yard has transformed into the renowned Saturday Farmers’ Markets and charming village shops. Spring is an especially enchanting time to visit, as the cherry trees proudly display their magnificent cascading blossoms, adding a touch of natural splendour to this delightful area.

Omaha Omaha stands as one of the country’s most beloved beaches, boasting a 3km stretch of flawless white quartz sand, clear waters, and breathtaking vistas. Just a short drive past Matakana, it’s the ideal destination for a day of exploration. Lifeguards are present only during the summer months, making it a haven for surfers, kitesurfers, windsurfers, and boogie board enthusiasts. The beach’s northern end harbours endangered dotterel and fairy terns, their nests protected by roped-off areas from dogs and children. For a quieter escape, venture to the beach’s southern end during low tide and discover the enchanting ‘Pink Beach,’ a 200m bay adorned with crushed pink wheel shells blending with the white sand.

Tawharanui Tawharanui Peninsula feels like stepping into paradise. Spanning 588 hectares, this park embraces stunning white sandy beaches, picturesque farmlands, native coastal forest, and rejuvenating wetlands. As an integrated public open sanctuary, it combines farming and conservation within a predator-proof fence to protect wildlife – dogs are not permitted. The gate automatically operates but locks at night, so be mindful of the time. Inside the perimeter are four beaches, with Anchor Bay being the main one. Relax on the 360m expanse of white sand and enjoy the serene surroundings. Surfers also flock here, and the marine reserve offers an underwater wonderland for snorkellers, revealing the graceful presence of stingrays and eagle rays gliding beneath the waves.

48

Families When the sun is shining, entertaining the kids is a breeze. Omaha Beach offers a variety of activities for them to enjoy. If they tire of playing in the surf, bikefriendly tracks stretch along the beach, passing playgrounds and tennis courts. Tawharanui provides a natural playground during low tide, with rock pools and caves to explore. For more fun, head to Matakana Country Park. The kids can enjoy with a petting zoo, pony rides, miniature train ride, and a playground. Action Ninja World is perfect for older children and young-at-heart adults. There are also retail shops, an art gallery, a restaurant, café, and bar. On less sunny days or for a break from the beach, consider Matakana Cinemas. This boutique cinema has three theatres showing a wide selection of films.

Cruising and kayaking The Matakana River, which used to be the sole entry and exit point for the small township, has hour-long cruises that set off from Matakana Wharf during full tide, offering passengers an entertaining and enlightening journey through the region’s history. While onboard, guests can enjoy a glass of local beer or wine. Matakana Wharf also offers kayak rentals, allowing visitors to explore the river at their own pace.

49

Walking and biking The Matakana Cycle Trail stretches from Matakana to Omaha Beach, with a detour to Point Wells. Perfect for families, this two-way track accommodates runners, walkers, and cyclists, featuring delightful stops for coffee, ice cream, or even wine tasting. Embark on a rewarding challenge with the Quarry Loop, nestled at the southern end of Omaha Beach. Ascend 130 steps to the summit, where breathtaking views of Omaha Bay and beyond await. At Tawharanui, you’ll discover seven signposted walks commencing from either Anchor Bay or the Lagoon, catering to various energy levels – for details visit the Information site near Anchor Bay. Among the favourites is the Ecology track, a loop walk starting from Anchor Bay, taking around 40 minutes to an hour. Immerse yourself in ancient native bush and be captivated by stunning sea views over the lively marine reserve, often visited by bottlenose dolphins joyfully playing and surfing in the waves. There are also around 9km of mountain bike trails to explore.

Fishing Omaha Bay and its adjacent coves and islands are a popular destination among fishing enthusiasts, owing to the plentiful snapper, kingfish, and kahawai found in the area. For boat owners eager to venture towards Little Barrier and Great Barrier Islands, the Omaha Beach Boat Ramp stands as the nearest option, especially during weekends and the summer season. For those who prefer staying on solid ground, the coast offers an array of rock structures to explore. At the southern end of Omaha Beach, locals often frequent the rocks to try their luck at catching kahawai. Similarly, the groynes at the beach’s northern end are popular spots where keen anglers enjoy perching on the rocks to cast their lines – just be cautious of the tides before settling in though.

M A TA K A N A , M OM A TAAHKAA+ N AT A WH ARA NU I

Tawharanui Regional Park is another sought-after spot for rock fishing enthusiasts. While the northern coastline of the park is a designated marine reserve where fishing is prohibited, beyond the markers on either side of the reserve, fishing is permitted. Accessing some of the more secluded fishing spots may pose a challenge, so it’s wise to leave the kids at home and carefully monitor the tides for a safe and rewarding experience.

Beaches, parks and camping With its breathtaking vistas of Little Barrier Island, Omaha Beach is patrolled from Labour Weekend to Easter, and receives daily supervision during the bustling summer school holidays. Omaha Beach boasts one of New Zealand’s top-rated golf courses – the Omaha Beach Golf Club. This 18-hole, par 70 links course offers an exceptional waterfront setting, complete with a clubhouse and community centre that enjoys immense popularity among members and locals alike. Tawharanui Regional Park holds a few hidden gems along the Peninsula, often overlooked by many visitors. With picturesque views across the Hauraki Gulf, these charming little bays attract boating enthusiasts who can easily launch their boats directly from the beach. Anchor Bay Beach on Tawharanui Regional Park is the favoured spot for daytrippers within the park, offering amenities such as toilets and changing facilities. Remember to pack a picnic as there are no food outlets at the beach. Tawharanui is a haven for nature lovers, now housing numerous endemic and native bird species, released as part of the Open Sanctuary initiative. Visitors can observe the bird colonies scattered throughout the park or join guided native birdspotting tours in the evening, with high chances of spotting a kiwi. To secure a spot at the basic DOC campsite during the summer months, it is advisable to book in advance due to limited availability. 51

Shopping

Matakana Village offers a delightful range of boutiques with ceramics, books, flowers, and designer clothing, open daily. Continuing along Matakana Valley Road leads to more shops selling homewares, gifts, and apparel. At Omaha Beach, near the Surf Life Saving Club, you’ll find shops for last-minute holiday essentials, including a Superette, café, gift store, homeware shop, and a real estate agent. For longer stays, Matakana has a local Four Square with a post office. Don’t miss the popular Matakana Village Farmers’ Markets every Saturday, featuring live music, artisan food, fresh produce, flowers, and locally roasted coffee.

Savour

The Matakana Coast is renowned for its Tuscany-like climate, providing an ideal environment for cultivating a diverse range of wine varieties. Local wineries, most of which offer tastings (some requiring appointments), showcase the region’s rich wine selection. Additionally, guided wine tours by local businesses are available for those seeking a curated experience. For beer enthusiasts, the area now boasts a couple of craft breweries, each offering a unique ‘cellar door’ experience. Driving from Warkworth to Omaha, you’ll be surrounded by orchards and crops, yielding a bounty of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables. To make the most of this abundance, it’s recommended you keep some change handy, as you’ll encounter numerous roadside stalls along the way to indulge in the region’s fresh produce.

Leigh, Goat Island + Pakiri Leigh village, a charming and close-knit community, is deeply committed to preserving its stunning environment. Local residents can often be found catching waves at Daniel’s Reef before enjoying a delicious meal at Leigh Eats. Goat Island, New Zealand’s first Marine Reserve, provides an educational experience at the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre, managed by the University of Auckland. Visitors can also dive into immersive encounters with diverse marine life within the reserve. Pakiri Beach, a short drive from Leigh, offers a serene and expansive white sandy beach, where activities such as fishing, surfing, swimming, and beachcombing top the list of things to do.

Whangateau

Whangateau is known for its picturesque sports fields, playground, and ample space for kids to play. The narrow harbour between Omaha and Ti Point is ideal for swimming, boating, and kayaking. The waterfront holiday park provides a fantastic range of accommodations and abundant family activities, such as kayak, paddleboard, and bike rentals, plus a TV and games room.

Mathesons Bay Mathesons Bay is a small cove just a 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive from Leigh Village. The beach offers a large playground and numerous rock pools for exploration. While there are no camping facilities, certified self-contained vehicles can stay for up to two nights.

Goat Island

Pakiri

LEI G H , G OMAATTIASKLA AN NA D + P A KI RI

Goat Island Marine Reserve was established in 1975 to protect marine life and offers excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities. You can easily snorkel and dive right from the beach, and encounter schools of fish and fascinating reefs. Snorkel gear and scuba equipment are available for hire, while clear kayaks and a Glass Bottom Boat offer unique ways to explore the reserve. The Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre provides interactive displays for learning about the marine environment.

Photo: Pakiri Beach - by Dominey Flores

Pakiri offers 14km of pristine beach, extending to Te Arai Point in the north. While it’s popular with surfers, its remote location keeps it less crowded than other surf beaches in the area. During summer, the beach is patrolled, but for a more tranquil experience, head to the estuary at the southern end, ideal for families with young children. A holiday park, just a 2-minute walk from the beach, offers various accommodation options and excellent facilities for the whole family. 81

Fishing

Before fishing, familiarise yourself with the boundaries of the Goat Island Marine Reserve, where fishing is prohibited between Okakari Point and Cape Rodney. The coastline from Big Omaha to Pakiri offers excellent fishing spots on wharves and rocky points, as long as you stay outside the marine reserve boundary. Fishing from Pakiri Beach near the river mouth at dusk is popular among locals seeking snapper or kahawai. For a sea fishing adventure, launch your boat from Leigh Harbour, Big Omaha, or Ti Point. Reefs just offshore from Leigh are ideal for catching snapper, kingfish, tarakihi, and John Dory.

Walking

Begin your Goat Island Coastal Walk at the Auckland University Marine Laboratory. Depending on your chosen route, it takes about an hour each way. This scenic trail leads to Tabletop Reef, offering phenomenal views of the Hen and Chicken Islands, Pakiri, and the Hauraki Gulf. You can return or take the Farm Loop back to the starting point for a memorable hike. The Matheson Bay Bush is a relatively easy trail which connects to Leigh Road through native bush, and features Kohuroa Stream waterfalls. Some parts have boardwalks, but it’s not stroller-friendly due to steps. For a fantastic coastal adventure, try the Leigh Coastal Path along the beautiful Pohutukawa-fringed coastline. With stunning views of Omaha, Tawharanui, Goat Island, and even the Coromandel Peninsula on clear days, this one-hour trip offers diverse terrain with paved, gravel, boardwalk, and grass sections. Rest stops with seats are available along the way, starting at Lax Crescent and ending at Cotterell Street.

Families

Goat Island offers a unique experience for marine lovers of all ages. Snorkelling just a short distance from the shore reveals an abundance of marine life, unlike anywhere else on the coast. Bring your own gear or rent from nearby shops. Certified divers can also hire equipment and opt for a guided tour. Due to its popularity, arriving early is essential during summer. For those preferring to observe marine life without getting wet, the Glass Bottom Boat provides an informative 45-minute tour. Alternatively, transparent kayaks offer a captivating view of the clear waters and various fish species. Visit the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre, featuring state-of-the-art interactive displays, a touch tank, and a sound tunnel.

Shopping Planning an extended stay in Whangateau, Leigh, or Pakiri? Stock up on supplies in nearby Warkworth during your journey. If you need essentials after arriving and prefer not to travel far, the Leigh General Store is a convenient option, open daily from 7am to 6pm, providing postal services and an ATM. While in Leigh, enjoy fantastic local bars and a café, serving pizza, coffee, cabinet food, and, of course, delicious fish and chips. 82

Mangawhai Heads During the summer, a local surf life-saving team ensures safety at Mangawhai Heads, a favoured family-friendly beach for both swimmers and surfers. Don’t miss out on the fun; bring your boogie board, even if you don’t intend to swim, as riding down the magnificent dunes is an epic experience. Mangawhai’s charm on a summer’s day is unparalleled, so despite the seemingly ample car park, we recommend arriving early as it fills up fast.

Mangawhai Harbour

With its protective dunes overlooking the rugged coastline, Mangawhai Harbour is an ideal spot for a family day out with swimming, diving, and boating activities. The lagoon-style harbour offers calm waters, perfect for children to splash around safely. It also provides a sheltered haven for kayaking and paddleboarding enthusiasts. Additionally, there’s a fantastic family-friendly holiday park right by the water’s edge, offering powered and unpowered sites, as well as cabins and units for rent.

Te Arai Regional Park

The pristine Te Arai Beach extends 10km northward to Mangawhai’s mouth. When the north-east swell comes in, it creates excellent beach breaks, perfect for surfing. If you’re eager to learn, there are fantastic surf schools nearby that can have you riding the waves in no time. For those seeking calmer waters, an old quarry hole near the car park offers a sheltered spot for swimming, ideal for little ones who may find the waves a bit challenging.

Tomarata Lake

Nestled in the Mangawhai Forest, Tomarata Lake is a hidden gem among three dune lakes, cherished by locals. Encircled by lush forest and picturesque farmland, this shallow lake offers an ideal setting for swimming, waterskiing, and kayaking, with the convenience of a boat ramp for easy launching. Although camping is prohibited at Tomarata Lake, it still makes for an unforgettable day trip destination.

Surf Mangawhai Heads Beach and Te Arai Beach are renowned destinations for aspiring surfers. With a few surf schools in the vicinity, they enthusiastically support and guide beginners in mastering the sport. Photo: Mangawhai Heads - by Robinsons Studios

Kayak and paddleboarding Mangawhai Harbour’s tranquil waters offer an ideal setting for kayaking and paddleboarding. Whether you venture to the spit or the estuary, it’s a delightful and relaxing way to experience the water. Just ensure to check the protected areas.

Fishing The Mangawhai Harbour and estuary offer fantastic fishing spots and sheltered swimming areas. While most visitors come for swimming and surfing, the park also features scenic tracks with breathtaking panoramic views from Bream Head to Pakiri. For those seeking a snapper or kahawhai, two boat ramps at the harbour offer convenient launching and ample trailer parking. Fishing charters are available for open ocean adventures, and both Mangawhai Heads and Te Arai are excellent beach fishing spots.

Undoubtedly, the most renowned walk in the region is the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway, spanning 5km (round trip) along the coastal clifftops, providing the ultimate experience of the rugged coast. Regarded as one of New Zealand’s top short walks, the trail offers breathtaking views from Bream Head in the North to the Hauraki Gulf. Commencing at Mangawhai Heads Surf Life Saving Club, the path initially leads north along the beach for about 20 minutes before turning inland. As you ascend along the elevated ridgeline, you’ll be captivated by the spectacular vistas. Upon reaching the end, you can choose to return along the cliff tops or walk along the beach (during low tide, three hours on either side).

Tanekaha walking tracks Located on the southern slopes of the Brynderwyn Hills, a series of diverse loop tracks await. Accessible from Kings Road, just before Mangawhai Heads, the trails offer two options after crossing the swing bridge: the Tanekaha Forest Track and the Tanekaha Falls Track. The Forest Track rewards you with stunning views of Mangawhai and the rural landscape below. On the Falls Track, you’ll encounter three waterfalls, each more spectacular than the last. For those with time and a sense of adventure, combining several tracks allows you to enjoy both the falls and breathtaking vistas, forming a thrilling 4.5-hour loop.

Mangawhai Activity Zone Situated adjacent to the golf club in Mangawhai Heads, the Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) serves as a one-stop destination for children’s entertainment. It’s the perfect place to let the kids burn off their energy, offering a spacious playground, a skatepark, pump track, and sports fields. The area is also enveloped by scenic walking and mountain bike trails. Additionally, parents can relax and enjoy a coffee at the on-site café. 95

Shopping Held every Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm, the Mangawhai Tavern Markets at Mangawhai Village, located by the water’s edge, offer a delightful array of artisan food, crafts, and local produce, perfect for stocking up your picnic basket. For essential services, you can find a Four Square supermarket in Mangawhai Village. If you’re driving to Mangawhai via Warkworth, consider stopping at one of the larger supermarkets along the way to cater to your needs before arriving at the markets.

Savour

Indulge in the abundance of local food and wine during your Mangawhai stay. Savour award-winning chocolate, olive oil, and coffee from various producers. What’s even better, the wineries and olive oil producers are conveniently clustered, making them easily accessible via a short bike ride. Local businesses offer bike rentals tailored for this purpose, allowing you to explore the culinary delights of Mangawhai at your leisure.

Events

Mangawhai boasts a thriving art scene, with several local artists open by appointment. However, during the annual Mangawhai Art Trail on the last weekend of February, many artists welcome the public to explore their studios free of charge. The town is renowned for its scenic walks, and you can experience them during the Mangawhai Walking Weekend. Additionally, MAZ hosts the impressive Mangawhai Bowl Jam at its skatepark, a significant skateboarding event attracting top skaters from all over New Zealand.

Waipu + Langs Beach Waipu is a charming coastal town that proudly embraces its Scottish heritage. For nearly 150 years, the town has celebrated its roots through the annual Waipu Highland Games, where participants adorned in tartan compete in traditional Highland Games. Nearby walking tracks and the Waipu Caves provide opportunities for exploration. Waipu Cove, the larger of the two beaches, is patrolled during the summer and offers fantastic swimming, surfing, and fishing opportunities. Langs Beach is a smaller, crescent-shaped beach that is not patrolled. It provides a serene and peaceful atmosphere, with Pohutukawa trees lining the shore, offering natural play areas for children and shade for visitors during the hot summer months.

Beaches, parks & camping The Waipu Coast, situated at the southern end of Bream Bay, boasts two main beaches – Waipu Cove and Langs Beach, each with its own allure, drawing both locals and visitors alike. Waipu Cove, the larger of the two, enjoys lifeguard patrols every weekend between Labour weekend and Easter, and daily during peak holiday times. It is renowned for swimming, surfing, and fishing, offering excellent facilities, including a popular café and well-stocked general store nearby. Langs Beach, a serene crescent-shaped beach, is favoured by holiday-goers. Although still suitable for swimming, it has fewer amenities than Waipu Cove and lacks lifeguard patrols throughout the year. The beach is adorned with beautiful Pohutukawa trees, providing a natural playground for children and welcome shade for beach lovers during the hot summer months. A short stroll over the dunes from Waipu Cove leads to the local campground, offering various accommodation options, family-friendly amenities, and complimentary BBQs for cooking the day’s catch. For those seeking a more rustic experience, free camping facilities are available at Waipu Caves for both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles, with a maximum stay limit of one night. Near Langs Beach, a hidden gem called Ding Bay lies just to the north. Accessible only during low tide, it feels like one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Remember to monitor the tides closely to avoid any inconvenience.

Waipu Town The quaint coastal communities of Waipu Cove and Langs Beach are wellserved by the neighbouring town of Waipu, famous for its Scottish heritage and dairy farming. Nestled alongside the picturesque Waihoihoi River, Waipu is only a 10-minute drive from the beaches and offers an excellent array of cafés and boutiques. The monthly Boutique Markets, held inside the Coronation Hall on the second Sunday of every month, showcase over 50 stalls featuring a diverse range of goods, from homemade pickles and artisan food to local arts and crafts. Waipu is also home to the acclaimed Waipu Scottish Migration Museum, a mustvisit for history enthusiasts. Renowned internationally for its modern and innovative exhibits, the museum delves into the area’s fascinating past. Additionally, the museum offers a captivating Heritage Trail, leading visitors through the early settlement of Waipu, exploring historic buildings and landmarks along the way.

Surf Famed among the surfing community, Waipu Cove Beach is a well-known spot. It attracts both seasoned surfers and newcomers eager to learn, thanks to the presence of local surf schools. Whether you’re a veteran or a newbie, this beach offers an excellent surfing experience for all. 108

Fishing and diving The Waipu Coast is a paradise for seafood lovers, and Bream Bay lives up to its name with an abundance of fish. Whether you want to venture out to sea or cast from the beach, there’s a high chance of enjoying fresh fish for dinner. While locals tend to keep their favourite spots secret, fishing and diving charter companies are more than willing to share their knowledge. For boat owners, there’s a convenient boat ramp near the local café at the southern end of Waipu Cove, and tractors or 4WD vehicles can launch at the southern end of Langs Beach. The Waipu Boat and Fishing Club also has a ramp on the banks of the Waipu River. Just 21km away from Waipu Cove are the Hen and Chicken Islands, with a diving depth of around 25m, making them suitable for all divers. While the islands themselves are protected sanctuaries, the surrounding waters offer fantastic opportunities for diving, fishing, and snorkelling. You’ll discover a wide variety of marine life, including blue maomao, snapper, trevally, crayfish, and scallops. WA I P UM+A L TA N KA GN S AB E A C H

For those who prefer to fish from the shore, both the beaches and rocky foreshores are popular spots among the locals.

Waterfall chasing A mere 20-minute drive inland from Waipu Town Centre, Piroa Falls awaits. A short walk through the gorge and across the Ahuroa River leads to the falls. Along the way, you’ll encounter small, shallow water holes, and upon arrival, you’ll be rewarded with a deeper waterhole at the base of the falls.

Biking and walking tracks The Waipu Coastal Walkway is the top-rated hike in the Waipu region, stretching from Waipu Cove to Langs Beach, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Hen and Chicken Islands. The southern end of the 3km trail is accessible to all, but as you approach Waipu Cove, some challenges arise in the form of rocks, steps, and ladders. Embark on the Waipu Caves Walkway, a scenic 2km trail starting at the Waipu Caves carpark. Perfect for complementing your exploration of the caves, this track leads you past impressive limestone formations and concludes on the ridgeline, treating you to captivating coastal views extending to the northern point of Bream Head. The Langsview Track is a 6.5km (one-way) trail starting from Cove Road, just south of Langs Beach. You have the option to be picked up at Cullen Road or return the way you came. The track leads you along an undulating ridgeline, passing through regenerating bush. Upon reaching the trig point, you’ll enjoy stunning views over Langs Beach, encompassing the surrounding islands and the majestic Brynderwyn Range inland. 109
