Oh Mary. Remembering the Icon.

The rainbows across the community are less bright today as we regretfully announce the passing of the founder of Metra Magazine, Mary Sappington (Mari Metra). For decades, Mary has been a champion and trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community. From starting one of the few gay publications of its day, to organizing the Midwest’s largest gay picnics, to simply being a friendly face to talk to, Mary was there. I met Mary many years ago when I was working reception in a doctor’s office. My co-worker, an older gay man, saw Mary come in and said to me “do you know who that is? That’s Mari Metra!”. I was only 18 or 19 and didn’t know much about the “gay-world” yet. Mary was so kind and funny, she made me feel like we had known each other for years. It was several years before I ran into Mary again, but she was quick to remember me. Finding the right words to describe what Mary meant to so many people

6 Metra Magazine, Issue #974

is difficult. She had a unique way of getting her point across and was always quick to jump in with a good zinger. As we transitioned ownership of Metra a few years ago, Mary was always available to offer her guidance. While she wasn’t involved in the business anymore, she gave her honest feedback (the good and the bad, trust me) and offered suggestions and ideas. She often referred to Metra as her baby and reminded us to be sure to take good care of her baby. While we mourn the passing of our dear friend, we do take solace in knowing that Mary’s legacy will continue. She touched the lives of so many over the years, that her memory and love will live on in each of us. 45 years ago this April, Metra launched because a brave, smart, funny girl had a pretty bold (and gay) idea. For that, we say thank you Mary. Thank you for the memories, the laughs, the tears, and everything in between. We promise to do our best to keep your baby going for another 45 years and beyond.

Affirmations Spotlight

How long have you been with Affirmations? My son Finn participated in the youth program from Spring 2016 - Fall 2019. I've been a board member since May 2020. What is Affirmations to you? Affirmations has been a place of growth, comfort and support for my family for the past 6 years. When Finn was part of the youth program we watched him find the confidence to be himself. The weekly drop-ins were something that he always looked forward to and he spoke so highly of his new friends. As his mom, I found some support from the staff that only grew stronger after his passing. I knew I wanted to be a part of this organization because it made such a difference with my family and I saw the impact it had on others. When you’re not working, what do you do for fun? I love spending time with my family and friends. I love kayaking, bike riding, pretty much anything outdoors. I love music and sunsets and being with the people I love.

Jamie Baker Board Member

What’s something you want everyone to know about Affirmations? I recommend Affirmations to anybody who is looking for support for themselves or a loved one. The support groups seems to be very helpful to members. I also recommend that people check it out if they have a loving and giving heart that wants to give back to their community.

Why Therapy is Essential for Healing

Other things may be therapeutic, but inadequate for deep work Oprah recently said “I had all my therapy on the show in front of everybody.” As a therapist for almost four decades I can tell you that deep healing won’t come from simply being a talk-show host. Nor will it come from reading self-help books, talking with your friends or the bartender, shopping, hiking, bicycling, playing music, or coaching. All these things may indeed help you with your healing and be therapeutic—that is they can reduce stress or put you in a better mental and emotional space in the short run. But none of these can compare to the healing and transformation one can experience under the guidance of a therapist who is specifically trained to help you heal from your wounds. What is therapy? Therapy is not about making you feel better about yourself in the immediate sense although, hopefully, you will in the end. It is not simply an intellectual process, a psychoeducation. Nor is it is just telling your secrets to a compassionate listener. Real therapy will deeply challenge your sense of self, force you to confront your fears and emotional wounds that have come from past relationships with parents, lovers, friends, or others. Therapy is never a comfortable process, and it isn’t meant to be. We all are designed to survive the traumas we experience in life and we do this by burying them in the subconscious and pushing on. But that doesn’t mean we will avoid the damage that is done. Trauma

accumulates in our mind and body and can negatively affect many aspects of how we interact with others and our environment. By employing therapeutic defenses such as those mentioned above, we can temporarily relieve negative feelings—put on a happy face, so to speak, and avoid confronting the deeper issues. But in doing so we run the very real risk of not ever living our fullest life, or even experiencing a devastating breakdown. People usually come to therapy when they sense they can no longer fully function in their daily life, when the pain of living with their wounds is greater than their fear of becoming vulnerable, of opening to recognizing and re-experiencing those wounds. And for the record, everyone has these fears, even therapists. Thus, I truly believe that almost everyone needs therapy, not just therapeutic Band-Aids. I often warn them that at some point in the process they are probably going to want to fire me when things become uncomfortable and painful. This is normal. As I said, therapy is not meant to be comfortable, but real growth and healing doesn’t happen in one’s comfort zone. However, one of the TikTok comments following Oprah’s statement did strike me as hopeful: “TikTok helped me get to therapy.” My response: “That’s awesome.” Joe Kort, Ph.D., LMSW AASECT Certified Sex Therapist & Supervisor of Sex Therapy

Go Ahead..! Release your inhibitions in 2024 In a world that often encourages conformity and restraint, there is immense power in breaking free from the shackles of inhibition. Releasing your inhibitions is not just a whimsical notion; it is a transformative journey towards self-discovery, personal growth, and a fuller, more authentic life. We will explore the significance of shedding inhibitions and the myriad benefits it can bring to your overall well-being, as well as ways to make it all happen throughout 2024. Releasing inhibitions allows you to tap into your authentic self. Many people suppress their true thoughts, emotions, and desires due to fear of judgment or societal expectations. However, embracing your genuine self-expression fosters a deeper connection with your own thoughts and feelings, leading to increased self-awareness and a more fulfilling life. So go ahead- get crazy! Inhibitions often stem from fear—fear of failure, rejection, or simply the unknown. By consciously releasing these inhibitions, individuals can confront their fears head-on. This process not only builds resilience but also diminishes anxiety, opening up doors to new opportunities and experiences that were once deemed intimidating. So go ahead- get naked! Creative expression flourishes in an environment free from inhibitions. Whether it’s in art, writing, music, or any other form of creativity, allowing yourself to let go of self-imposed restrictions fosters innovation and originality. Breakthroughs and masterpieces often emerge when individuals feel

32 Metra Magazine, Issue #974

liberated to explore the depths of their imagination without fear of judgment. So go ahead, be like Madonna and express yourself! Releasing inhibitions is not only a personal endeavor but also greatly impacts interpersonal relationships. Open communication, vulnerability, and authenticity are the cornerstones of meaningful connections. By letting go of inhibitions, individuals can foster deeper and more genuine relationships, as they become more transparent and receptive to the emotions and needs of others. So go ahead- LOVE! Suppressing thoughts and emotions can take a toll on mental and emotional well-being. Releasing inhibitions is a cathartic process that allows for emotional release and stress reduction. Embracing vulnerability and openness enables individuals to confront and process their emotions in a healthier manner, contributing to improved mental health. So go ahead- take that trip! In a society that often places value on conformity, breaking free from inhibitions is a courageous act that can lead to a more authentic, fulfilling life. The journey towards selfdiscovery and personal growth involves shedding the layers of fear and self-doubt that hold us back. By embracing freedom and releasing inhibitions, individuals open themselves up to a world of possibilities, creativity, and genuine connections, ultimately paving the way for a richer and more meaningful existence in 2024 and beyond.
