Celebrating 45 Years! Greetings Earthlings!

We here at Metra want to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude and love to all of our loyal fans and readers. 2024 marks Metra’s 45th Anniversary as a queer publication. In April of 1979, six months before the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in October of that year, the self-proclaimed Queen of the Fag-hags, Miss Mary Metra, embarked on a journey to unite MetroDetroit’s gay scene under one umbrella, to promote and foster growth in each others’ businesses. Our most die-hard readers will remember the days when Metra was printed as a newspaper, offering the day’s latest gay news from across the country, in a time when being gay was not just frowned upon, but illegal. So much has changed since those early days. The AIDS crisis that exploded in the

early 80s took so many of our friends and family that many lost count of the number of funerals attended. The brutal killing of Matthew Shepard in 1998 shed a national spotlight on the terrors and traumas so many young queer people experience on a regular basis. Then, with Lawrence V Texas in 2003, the landmark ruling that made gay sex no longer a crime. And in 2015 two Michigan parents sued all the way to the Supreme Court to pave the way for same-sex marriage legalization nationwide. Through the trials and tribulations, Metra has held strong and steady providing a sense of community and acceptance. We might not know what the future holds, but we do know one thing: Metra Magazine is here, we’re queer, and we’re looking forward to our next 45 years of the gayest debauchery you can think of!

Affirmations Spotlight

Sp ec

tion Edi ial

We wish our esteemed Executive Director, Dave Garcia, all the best as he moves on to his next great adventure. We look forward to seeing how he continues to bring light, love, and equality to our community.

Dave Garcia, Executive Director

How long have you been with Affirmations? I’ve been with Aff for over 8 years now over two different stints. What are you most proud of having accomplished as ED? The collaborations I have helped build. Whether that be the Michigan Community Center’s Network, the #HateWon’tWin Coalition, or the state-wide coalition that brought about a first-of-its-kind $10 million allocation to address queer health disparities across the state. No one organization can accomplish what we can all accomplish working together. How did Affirmations help you grow? Being an Executive Director of a queer non-profit is challenging and it comes with criticism from all corners. You need to have a thick skin to do this job. It’s safe to say that Affirmations has toughened me up. Is there a message you’d like to share with the community? President Obama once said, “The cynics may be the loudest voices – but I promise you, they will accomplish the least.” I completely agree with that statement and would add that cynicism is a poor substitute for intelligence and vision. Though, often, it pretends to be both. Do not let the cynics, the critics, the gossipers destroy what we have built.

Hook- up from hell

We all know New Year’s Eve is the night to let go of everything from the prior year, right? Well, you’re supposed to know that. That’s my motto. The reason that’s my motto is because this last New Year’s, at a work party, there were many things to forget. One of my coworkers is always putting themselves out there. The confidence they have is what attracted me to them. I always tried flirting with them to see if they’d maybe take the bait. At this Christmas party, they approached me and asked to speak with me in one of the conference rooms, Conference Room AB. He didn’t say what it was about, so I thought this may be him telling me

20 Metra Magazine, Issue #973

he has noticed me in and out of the office. He’s never talked to me out of the office before. So at 9:50 PM I headed to the conference room. Even though he told me to meet him at 10:00 PM, I wanted to be early. I got to the conference room and he was already waiting for me. It clearly wasn’t work related. He turned off the lights, started playing sensual music and then mysteriously was unclothed. Seconds later security came in. A laptop was in the conference room and the webcam was still on. Needless to say, we were caught red handed. We also got our bonuses taken away. Who would’ve thought to literally check your surroundings? Let’s hope this year comes with better luck.

Liberate yourself from masturbation shame In a recent Smart Sex, Smart Love podcast of mine, I talked with Alex de la Cruz about his personal and professional journey that has helped him find his true self and speak on behalf of bators. Bators are guys who prefer to masturbate over most other sexual and erotic interests. He created Bator Balm, a men’s edging lubricant that enhances the bating experience and has strengthened a sense of community among bators. He wanted men to overcome the shame he had been living with for many years as a bator (those who prefer masturbation over intercourse). “I was caught masturbating as a teenager. The person pointed at me, laughed at me and ran away. I assumed he was going to tell others. I was horrified and felt so much shame,” he retells his emotionally painful story. “I had no one to talk to; my parents weren’t around, I had no one to console me. I had to keep it all inside. It was very traumatic. It affects me to this day.” He found http://Batorworld.com , a social media site for men who enjoy masturbation. “It’s very affirming,” he finds. “We share stories, we video chat, we support each other; we help each other understand there is nothing to be ashamed of because we chose masturbation.” Through this group, Bator Balm was born. He learned men were using Abalone, a makeup remover for women, as a lubricant. “It’s great for edging, but as a product designer, I had issues with it. Abalone is very sticky, it is hard to wipe off and the packaging was not men-friendly,” he found. “I needed to create a product designed just for men, one that meets our needs. We

deserve something just for us,” he asserts, adding, “99 percent of men masturbate, whether they admit it or not.” When talking with me about edging, Alex shares that he finds it a type of meditation for him. When he is edging, he can focus on his body, his mind and his desires. He describes the experience as self-soothing, peaceful and fulfilling. “This is your erotic life, and no one should take that from you,” I said to Alex during the podcast. When I asked him about bator groups, he described them as a place to find camaraderie and enjoy the act of masturbation in a safe atmosphere. Each group has its own rules, he explains. In general, you must get consent if you want to be with someone. No touching is allowed without permission, and no intercourse or anal sex is permitted. When I asked him about some people liking it dry, Alex noted that he has “converted” some to Bator Balm because it feels so good. “It’s all about experimenting and finding what you like,” he points out. “Find the sensation you like.” In concluding the podcast, Alex shared a very emotional message: “no one can shame you with your truth. Those who are against masturbation shouldn’t change me or shame me. Bator Balm is my protest against people who shamed me! It has given me confidence. I am proud. No one is going to make me feel bad about what I do. I live my life with my husband the way I want,” he asserted with passion. Switch people around to enjoy each other’s hole, I mean role in this! Eliminate all the nonimportant positions to make it all work. Start before everyone else gets ideas. TAURUS: The Crazy Dick that you feel that you had lost want to attract back will reappear if you’re in search for it. Do not waste time on those that are not doing the 5 kings! They are Smoking, Drinking, Sucking, Fucking or Liking! Yes, even those that do not talk online and are ghost viewers on your social media that do not talk back got to go. GEMINI: This month May start off with blue balls but by the 3rd week you’re on top of your game. If you feel the need to get fresh air or sniff that little brown bottle to get through the day, then do it! You just have like this Need to Do what makes you feel Chill and relax VS Netflix & Dicks with your legs doing the splits. CANCER: Know your limits this month with everything to do with your goodies. Life is giving you this objectivity that is making your bussy pop! Keep things real, keep being you, see without any additives, see where things do not need to be & make sure that it’s long enough to tickle your tonsils.

LEO: Everything will be in a mix and shuffle mode. Sometimes sucking a good dick or even getting bred by the right guy can make everything cum together. Make sure you are a team player vs the person who is more the antagonist, while all you want is your ass ate like a cupcake. VIRGO: Life will feel like it is on Adderall but it’s just you are adding it all. You cock will feel like you took the little blue pill and you’re all ready to go. This extra energy uses it to tear that ass up that you been having your eye on. Do not be so serious this month but learn from situations. LIBRA: This will be sort of a challenging month, however, do not burn any bridges yet. Let what seems like a bad booty call gone bad now turn into something better than you expected. Turn sexual conflicts into something hot to warm up the nights. Do not let life get you that frustrated. SCORPIO: Make sure that Growlr Profile Matches the person by going Live to see them. Patience is better than having gonorrhea! Be around those that do not have the Clap and without Fucking up your body. The people that are clapping with only their hands for that applause for that peach are those you need to be around.

SAGITTARIUS: Life might need to slow down to have more feels or to enjoy each stage of that wonderous body that is making your toes curl. Keep that Pragmatic Beefcake or Daddy in check by taking longer and making him learn some patience. Twinks and Chicken must learn that it’s about what you do vs what your agenda is. CAPRICORN: If you do all the hard stuff first then all the easy pleasing can start faster. You feel like things are hitting the spot late then maybe change your position to make a different out cum. This is the time to do it all while you have extra energy. Save all your memorabilia from all that hot dick you acquired. AQUARIUS: You may feel like no one is wanting to play with your penis or your ass at this time, it is like error 404 and shit. Surround yourself with those that make that sundial hit high noon! Keep those throwing shade always in front of you so the shadow is behind you. Tea Bag them and throw them some Tea! PISCES: Feeling overwhelmed still? Have yourself feeling like you’re not getting enough? Use this month to build up some things that feeds your soul and your dick! Laugh and get off at the same time if you can. Times change a queen these days! Motivate yourself and others to do more.

Go Ahead..! Release your inhibitions in 2024 In a world that often encourages conformity and restraint, there is immense power in breaking free from the shackles of inhibition. Releasing your inhibitions is not just a whimsical notion; it is a transformative journey towards self-discovery, personal growth, and a fuller, more authentic life. We will explore the significance of shedding inhibitions and the myriad benefits it can bring to your overall well-being, as well as ways to make it all happen throughout 2024. Releasing inhibitions allows you to tap into your authentic self. Many people suppress their true thoughts, emotions, and desires due to fear of judgment or societal expectations. However, embracing your genuine self-expression fosters a deeper connection with your own thoughts and feelings, leading to increased self-awareness and a more fulfilling life. So go ahead- get crazy! Inhibitions often stem from fear—fear of failure, rejection, or simply the unknown. By consciously releasing these inhibitions, individuals can confront their fears head-on. This process not only builds resilience but also diminishes anxiety, opening up doors to new opportunities and experiences that were once deemed intimidating. So go ahead- get naked! Creative expression flourishes in an environment free from inhibitions. Whether it’s in art, writing, music, or any other form of creativity, allowing yourself to let go of self-imposed restrictions fosters innovation and originality. Breakthroughs and masterpieces often emerge when individuals feel

32 Metra Magazine, Issue #973

liberated to explore the depths of their imagination without fear of judgment. So go ahead, be like Madonna and express yourself! Releasing inhibitions is not only a personal endeavor but also greatly impacts interpersonal relationships. Open communication, vulnerability, and authenticity are the cornerstones of meaningful connections. By letting go of inhibitions, individuals can foster deeper and more genuine relationships, as they become more transparent and receptive to the emotions and needs of others. So go ahead- LOVE! Suppressing thoughts and emotions can take a toll on mental and emotional well-being. Releasing inhibitions is a cathartic process that allows for emotional release and stress reduction. Embracing vulnerability and openness enables individuals to confront and process their emotions in a healthier manner, contributing to improved mental health. So go ahead- take that trip! In a society that often places value on conformity, breaking free from inhibitions is a courageous act that can lead to a more authentic, fulfilling life. The journey towards selfdiscovery and personal growth involves shedding the layers of fear and self-doubt that hold us back. By embracing freedom and releasing inhibitions, individuals open themselves up to a world of possibilities, creativity, and genuine connections, ultimately paving the way for a richer and more meaningful existence in 2024 and beyond.
