PROGRAM NOTE: A pilot study by Herndon, Washburn, and Fujioka (2016) showed that piano melodies can retain verbal content following speech-to-song transformation. In the EEG/twoalternative forced choice task, verbal phrase segments were repeated to participants in order to create the illusion of speech-to-song through repetition (Deutsch, 1995, 2003).

Afterwards, portions of the phrase were played back, followed by piano contours that either matched or mismatched the verbal segments. We found that overall, 80% of the time, participants correctly selected the matches, suggesting a successful translation from speech to melody.

This piece begins with a song stated as a sort of prime. It is then made unintelligible, stripped to its intervallic relationships, transposed, and, finally, silenced.

Can its verbal content be sensed through these transformations?

DURATION: approx. 8m 30s MATERIALS MIDI keyboard with minimum range of MIDI notes 63-76 and controller with 7 channels, Max patch (available upon request), and laptop to stereo PA. SETUP & NOTES Place speakers behind players so that the keyboardist can balance playback volume with cello. It may be necessary to amplify cello in large spaces.

MIDI CONTROLLER Korg NanoKontrol2 pictured (to be used in addition to MIDI keyboard)

K#: When number is given (ex. -1, -0.9), adjust K3 knob to display indicated number on patch (in yellow box). To micromodulate tuning, or for vibrato, twist knob back and forth in alternating directions about a quarter turn at a time such that the pitch is subtly, but audibly, affected. Vary speed and pitch range ad lib.

Set knobs to center before performance, with values reset (SET button).

S#: Each cue triggers a loop that continues until S# OFF cue. At OFF cues, samples play through to end.

Set all samples to OFF before performance (SET button).

F#: To microadjust, slowly raise or lower faders to bring desired samples to the foreground or fade out.

Set slider levels to balanced volume before performance (note that if controller is unplugged, all slider values reset to 0).
