Graduation project from Piet Zwart Institute (Master Interior Architecture - Research and Design)

My name is Julia Woch, a spatial artist from Poland, currently based in Amsterdam.

I recently graduated with a Master’s in Interior Architecture Research and Design from Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, having previously completed my Bachelor’s in Architecture at Cracow University of Technology. I am reaching out to express my keen interest in joining Random Studio, as I appreciate the wide range of your creative concepts and I think I would a great fit fot the role of 3D Visualisation Artist.

During my architectural studies, I found myself gravitating toward visualization and image-making, where I developed a strong proficiency with 3D software, including Archicad, SketchUp, 3DS Max, Blender, Lumion, and Touch Designer. These skills, along with my hands-on experience with hand-drawing, designing, building weaving looms and creating the woven sculptures made me who I am, creatively.

My skills in visualisations were recognised and appreciated during my architectural internships and because of that I was responsible for visual content during my work at SeArch Architecture and Meesvisser.

One of my biggest facinations is textile art, particularly handweaving, two years ago I traveled to Poland to learn the endangered technique of weaving from Teresa Pryzmont, a 84 year oId master weaver. I became intrigued with the idea of the woven fabric as a structure that can shelter bodies, interiors and shape the architecture itself.

I would be really excited to advance my skills in creating digital environments and exploring new technologies like VR, AR, and animation—areas where Random Studio excels. My attention to textures, materials, and their ability to evoke atmosphere and emotions complements your project focus on experiential storytelling.

Additionally, I have experience with photogrammetry, 3D printing, and illustration which I believe will allow me to contribute in delivering innovative, detail-oriented solutions. I am highly motivated by your open and collaborative culture, and I am eager to contribute to your forward-thinking, experimental projects.

Thank you for considering my application

Sincerely, Julia Woch

Glitching the grid of the domestic space

In my practice I am interested in three-dimensional woven textiles - its space-making qualities and the possibilities of image-making and shaping narratives.

While thinking about the domestic space I notice a certain gridded model within which there are various patterns of everyday activities. The space of my own room has been glitched - its order interrupted by the activity of weaving. My table weaving loom became a pivotal point of the room - everything arranged in order to serve the weaving process - from the warping board hanging on the wall, tools - shuttles, to colourful threads collected over time.

Inspired both by the artistic practice of Magdalena Abakanowicz and the tradition of weaving furman gloves in Sądecczyzna – I started to explore possibilities of spatial weaving. Looking at the example of the spatial loom used to make gloves by highlanders in Poland I concluded that to alter the technique some new tools are necessary. I felt eager to create a new type of a loom that will allow for spatial seamless weaving.

I decided to create ‘Cosmic Pillar’ to relate to the beloved landscape of Polish forests, yet distorted by the vision of many trees being cut down for building material. This piece is a hybrid of a tree and an architectural column. It fascinated me to learn that Slavs had a sacred tree, the oak, which served as a cosmological model of understanding the world before Christianization. The tree was viewed in three parts: the roots, ‘Nawia,’ representing the realm of the past and the dead; the trunk, ‘Jawia,’ symbolising the realm of the living and earthly life; and the crown, ‘Prawia,’ dedicated to the divine and ruled by the god Perun.

I find it beautiful that, in Slavic culture, trees were not only significant gathering spaces and powerful symbols but also metaphors for understanding the world, life, and death. By merging the form of a tree with an architectural column, my work reflects both the destruction of these sacred spaces and their enduring significance. Through this work, I hope to raise awareness of the need to preserve our natural heritage and cultural traditions.

I have found that weaving has helped me to develop a colour pallette and deepened my appreciation of tactility, and my sensitivity of materials and textures. I believe that the making of physical sculptures has informed my practice of creating sceneries - both physical and digital.
