While this issue of PH features landscape photography from six talented artists, these are different than the cliché “calendar art” landscapes you may be used to seeing.

Here you’ll find a wonderful assortment of approaches, from crisp realism to etherial dreamscapes, vivid colors to muted tones. Long exposures transform sea and sky into impressionist scenes or completely smooth surfaces. Unusual perspectives frequently provide the viewer with a more direct connection to the images, as if actually standing in the scene experiencing it totally—as opposed to peering at an distant vista from behind a guard rail.

So, please explore this new landscape. In addition to these images, be sure to take time to visit the photoraphers’ individual websites to see more of their work and what other wonders they have to offer. (And please mention that you found them in PH Magazine!)

Speaking of exploring, have you visited the PH Magazine Gallery? It is a section of our website where you can see more work from selected PH artists, and purchase prints from almost any genre in a variety of styles, perfect for collectors and lovers of photography. Please visit http://www.phmag.ca/gallery/ and take a look around!

David Baker My photographic passions are sand, sea, stone and the forest. In November 2005 I started my photoblog milouvision.com. In January 2013, I was the winner of the Outdoor Photographer of the Year 2012 competition, and also in October 2012 the ‘Your View’ category winner in the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2012 competition. During the past year, my efforts have concentrated on the New Forest, in particular a project now called Ridge Trees. In essence this is governed by two ‘triangles’ - one geographical and one artistic. The former relates to three points of the Forest - Vinney Ridge, Puckpits and Bratley View - and all images have been made within this boundary. The artistic aspect is really concerned with light and time with the three points being dawn (or on the cusp thereof), mist and late autumn/winter. www.milouvision.com

Joerg Karrenbauer From the beginning, I’ve been fascinated by the way blackand-white photography provides us with another way of looking at our environment. I was born and grew up in Saarbruecken, Germany. As I got a Leica at the age of 16, I set off without delay for the neighboring state of Alsace. Today I still prefer to take blackand-white pictures of impressive landscapes, portraits and street life for my limited-edition fine art prints. I like the atmospheric moods at the French north coast, which provided me with the theme for these images—the charming the beach huts along this coast. Every place has its individual beach huts, which differ in shape and style. www.karrenbauers.com

John-Patrick Morarescu Ever since I can remember, I have been drawn to the sea. The endless view, the unique smell, and the sounds of the waves give me a feeling of universal belonging. What inspires me as a photographer is what inspires me in life. The camera becomes an extension of my sight and my mind. I just need to be awake and keep my eyes open, because in every moment something special can be happening. Openness is what brings me to surprise and inspiration. There is one basic element that is crucial to bring all the elements together: the light. Like a thread that creates structure and consistency, it’s the magical substance of photography. It is a physical condition that contains many extraordinary qualities. The photograph is a chemical reaction in which the light is captured on a surface, creating a code that suggest reality to the viewer. But photography is not reality itself, merely an abstraction of it. And this is the point that fascinates me; the possibility of recreating reality through a chemical process. I am a photographer based in Berlin and my series is named “My Home is the Sea” after the song by Bonnie “Prince” Billy. www.morarescu.de

|BOOKS|

This has to be a book of monumental proportions: the photographer’s ten year concept; ninety-nine stunning photos; just over fourteen by eleven inches; weighing over six pounds. In this wonderful book we see seven great portfolio works of a lens crafter extraordinaire. These pictures are a joy to our sense of sight. They are works of art to be treasured. 152 Pages / Paperback English Language Publisher: Ansel Adams 2006 ISBN-10: 0821258222 ISBN-13: 978-0821258224 9 x 0.4 x 10.4 inches

Justin Welch Photography has changed the way I look at our world. It has also changed what I look at! I’m a London and Paris based photographer whose two great passions in life are photography and travel. Born and brought up in South Africa, I decided to move to London to broaden my horizons and travel the world. I believe that through travel, ones views of the world are broadened—experiencing other cultures, meeting people from diverse communities and countries contribute to that growth. Seeing the beauty, and sometimes the ugliness of this world, has helped me to understand that we all have a small part to play in making this planet a better place for future generations to enjoy. I don’t like to pigeonhole myself into any single genre of photography, as I truly love capturing anything and everything that I feel I need to photograph. I strive to keep learning and evolving my photography. Through my photography I seek to create pieces of art that reflect my personal experiences, to capture scenes and events as I see them, and to share with others the beauty and diversity of the world, often in unexpected places. www.justinwelchphotography.com

Mindaugas Gabrenas Mindaugas Gabrenas is an amateur photographer from Lithuania currently based in New York. His initial encounter with photography was in late 1990, when his parents gave him his first film camera, a Zenit. But in those days this Soviet masterpiece was not so appealing and more resembled a vacuum cleaner rather than a photo camera. He began to seriously pursue photography in 2008 while living in Spain. He acquired his first digital camera which sparked his intense interest in photography. After his first personal photo exhibition “Fantasma” in 2010, he became increasingly interested in film photography. Currently he focuses on 6×6 black-and-white photography, working with ahisHasselblad 501CM, Kiev 88, Kodak Duaflex II, Holga and some homemade cameras. Landscapes, waterscapes, cityscapes, even melancholic dreamscapes are his primary interests. “My photographs are my way to show and express some of my feelings and my personal perception of what surrounds us. Using my mind, eyes and camera, I go through a maze of visions and see what I can discover for myself. Even if someone has been there before me, I will see it differently. But there’s no denying—someday I’d love to get into the room where no one has gone before.” www.gabrenas.com
