Once again, on Monday, Canadians will go to the polls to elect our next Prime Minister.

The problem is that more than likely, not enough of us will exercise our right to vote.

Did you know that Steven Harper was elected as a result of only 22% of the eligible voters going to poles in the last elections? It was the lowest voters turnout and the lowest level of support of any winning party in Canadian history.

How can 22% of us make an informed decision for some 34 million of us?

And why exactly are we here today?

Harper's Conservative government was defeated in a no-confidence vote on March 25, after being found in contempt of Parliament, thus triggering a general election. This was the first occurrence in Commonwealth history of a government in the Westminster parliamentary tradition losing the confidence of the House of Commons on the grounds of contempt of Parliament. The noconfidence motion was carried with a vote of 156 in favor of the motion and 145 against. The government is not trustworthy. Really?

But it gets uglier Rumours abound that if Harper gets back in power, a coalition will form. A coalition government is a cabinet of a parliamentary government in which several parties cooperate. The usual reason given for this arrangement is that no party on its own can achieve a majority in the parliament. So the other leaders, the ones who are sitting as opposition, well they "might" join forces to obtain control of the majority, therefore tying the hands of a minority government. This can be used for good, but this can be used with malicious intent.

So I'm still for the taking. I challenge any candidate out there to come and tell me why I should vote for them. One thing is certain, I will vote. And so should everybody. It's our nation. Let your voice be heard. Let's not leave our fate in the hands of a mere 22%.

Last week, I covered the leaders debate held in Cornwall. It was a debate full of animosity. Citizens expressively pointed out their concerns, and for cause. Our little riding is often forgotten in the midst of all the big ones, and this needs to change. A great MP can do just that. So a lot is at stake and people are concerned with making the right choice. In the heat of all the commotion, however, one couldn't help it but feel sorry for Guy Lauzon, who seemed like a gold fish out of water, grasping for air, as all the other candidates gave us a sample of what a coalition government might look like. It was downright nasty. Wyatt Walsh was praising the Liberals so much, that he almost convinced me to vote for them. Only Wyatt Walsh works for the Green Party. That confused me. Darcy Neil Donnelly made absolutely no sense and offered off-the-wall solutions to traditional issues. And Mario Leclerc, well, nice guy, but not sure he's MP material. I would need a lot more than 2 hours to figure that one out.

For the month of April we are featuring the original 19th century architectural drawings of Cornwall's Post Office at Pitt and 2nd Streets Part II Since its founding in 1784, Cornwall and Eastern Ontario have been home to numerous important politicians on the federal scene, including one Prime Minister, Canada's Postmaster General, a Minister of Transport, a Minister of State for Trade, a Speaker of the House of Commons and two High Commissioners to London, to name just a few. With an upcoming federal election, this photomontage will highlight some of these colourful and important personages.

Stormont MP, the Honourable Lionel Chevrier Minister of Transport talking to a staff officer in the Canadian Forces in the late 1940s. Chevrier a Cornwall native, was first elected for the Liberals in 1935 and represented Cornwall and Stormont until 1954. He served as Minister of Transport from 1945 to 1954, when he retired to become President of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. He re entered politics a Member for Montreal-Laurier in 1957 and became President of the Privy Council and then Minister of Justice and Attorney-General. He retired again in 1964 when he was named High Commissioner to the United Kingdom a position he held until 1967, when he returned to Canada to oversee foreign dignitaries at Expo '67.

Progressive Conservative Grant Campbell was elected on his second try in 1958.

Four years later he was beaten by Lucien Lamoureux by 70 votes.

Liberal Candidate for Stormont Lucien Lamoureux left, and Prime Minister Lester Pearson centre in front of Cornwall's Royal Hotel with a well-wisher before the 1962 General Election. Lamoureux sat in the House of Commons for Stormont County from 1962 until 1974, he was Speaker of the House of Commons from 1966 to 1974.

A 1958 election ink blotter advertising Progressive Conservative Jean Casselman alongside Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. Jean Casselman won her seat, in Grenville-Dundas in the 1958 byelection caused by the death of her husband who died in office.

Casselman retained her seat until defeated by Liberal Gordon Blair in 1968. In 1979 she was named High Commissioner to the United Kingdom as Jean Casselman Wadds.

of the “Golden Boomer”

By Bob Sloan, Seaway DJ These boomers represent a huge demographic shift that has remodeled society by their sheer numbers alone. In their teens they rebelled, and it was the medium of music that had the greatest affect on change.

When you listen to their music you will discover incredible and powerful lyrics – mostly political, brilliant melodies, performed by extremely talented artists who gave their all.

The quality of stereo sound systems available today reverberate to such an amazing degree it brings you as close to a live performance as one can get. With this in mind it’s no wonder a “Boomer Party” has such great appeal as we remember our teenage years during the 60’s – 70’s. Most homes had a rec-room where we hung out with our friends and fed our turntables with a steady supply of 45’s and 33 rpms LPs – this was the focal point of our youth. These songs etched our feelings and emotions deep into our memories, and when you hear them 40 or 50 years later it sparks that sensation as if it was just yesterday.

We had so much fun with such a simple venue that just maybe, we’ll do it again – next year – down at the Blue, on Good Friday!

In order to relive some of the mind boggling past we decided to create a “Tribute to the Golden Boomers” down at the Blue Anchor on Good Friday. We promised the favourite tunes from Woodstock 69, along with so many other great songs of the 70’s, and posted a couple of flashy posters announcing our Boomer Bash was the place to be. Knowing that a true blue Baby Boomer couldn’t resist such an invitation, we knew the venue would be jammed packed, and we weren’t disappointed with our numbers, and neither were the boomers and their friends!

Now I knew eventually a Golden Boomer would reveal himself – where finally Jack Snoeks arrived announcing he was indeed officially a Golden Boomer the week before. With due respect to our distinguished guest we extended him the privilege of drink and song and he quickly replied pour me some Rickard’s Red, and put on some CCR, and turn up the volume!

The crowd cheered as now our party was complete with our very own real live”Golden Boomer” to mark the occasion. Jack is pictured here with his wife, Jo.

We had a 12 hour marathon featuring no shortage of hit songs as we sang and danced from tunes, form Elton John, Beatles, Abba, Queen, Zeppelin, on and on. If you were a Boomer, during your teens you lived with the best music of the century and there are statistics to back it up. The popularity has never wavered and you could argue that it still is as popular now as it was then. You might say the era will live on to the next generations as so many of the Boomer’s grandchildren enjoy these songs, and are quite familiar with all the tunes and their bands. Just quiz them and you will discover they may know more than you!

COFFEE GRINDS by Jason Setnyk

I spent time with family at the Fifth Wheel for Sunday Easter Brunch enjoying hot coffee, musing about everything that has happened in the past week in regards to hockey and politics. There were the local debates last week, including the Cornwall debate I attended at the Civic Complex hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. It was Bernadette Clement's night, she won the debate hands down, however winning the election will be much harder. Clement spoke with clarity and eloquence. She answered questions very well, and connected how Liberal policies will benefit the people of this riding. She received huge applause on numerous occasions. The Legal-Aid Lawyer and City Councillor seeks to be the first woman to ever represent this riding on Parliament Hill, and at the debates she built a lot of momentum for herself. On the other hand, Guy Lauzon has been having a rough time at the debates, getting booed, especially in regards to the bridge issue. Despite the unreceptive response, Lauzon has managed to keep his cool. Mario Leclerc stayed very close to the NDP script and had an okay night.

Wyatt Walsh provided comedy and entertainment for the evening, with some stinging and relevant criticisms about the current government.

The Green candidate however did upset some in the crowd who felt he was acting very unprofessional not focusing enough on platform policies. The Libertarian candidate Darcy Donnelly seemed out of touch and out of place, repeating his mantra that taxes should be voluntary and public schools should be abolished. If taxes are the price we pay for civilization, then that price is just too high for Donnelly.

A platform of voluntary taxes might appeal to some conservative minded people, and if that is the case, Donnelly might take dozens and dozens of votes away from Guy Lauzon. Which brings me to the topic of vote-splitting versus strategic voting. If you are partisan you might vote for the same party every election, however if you are not partisan, strategic voting might make a lot of sense. If your main concerns are lower taxes and being tough on crime, Guy Lauzon of the Conservative Party is probably your best choice in SDSG. If your main concerns are issues like public health care, affordable university, strong pensions, and a green environment, there are three progressive parties to choose from - The Liberals, NDP, and Greens.

Amongst the progressive parties here in SDSG, Bernadette Clement of the Liberals has the best chance of challenging the incumbent for his seat. However a strong third place showing by Mario Leclerc could make Guy Lauzon's job of winning this riding much easier.

A lot can change between now and election day, but some of the latest popularity polls suggest The Liberals might make gains in Ontario and BC, and The NDP might make significant gains in Quebec and gains in Atlantic Canada.

The Conservatives and Bloc are now projected to lose seats, however the Conservatives would still form a minority government. Some people are frustrated by the cost of running an election, especially now that this is the fourth Federal elections over the past seven years, but this is the price we pay for democracy. The so called inconvenience of casting a ballot is something people in other countries are literally dying to do.

Everyone is thinking about the Federal Election right now, but we just had a municipal election, and in October 2011 we are going to have a provincial election. I would like to congratulate South Glengarry Mayor Jim McDonell who has been chosen to represent the Progressive Conservatives in the next provincial election on October 6th 2011 in the riding of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry. There were talks about backlash for a Cornwall City Councillor running in this Federal Election. I wonder if there will be any sort of backlash in South Glengarry for Jim McDonell running this early into his Mayoral term? My feeling is any back lash would probably be minimal in both cases. The Provincial Liberals will be picking their candidate soon. Will it be former Executive Director of St. Lawrence College Pat Finucan, former Federal Candidate Denis Sabourin, or former firefighter and City Councillor Mark MacDonald? I haven't heard any news from the provincial NDP or Greens yet.

Also kudos to Bernadette Clement, because all five Federal candidates were invited to speak at Rock for Charity, but she was the only one who made it out.

The latest fundraiser was for the SD&G Coalition of Social Justice. There was a good turnout and $405 was raised for the worthy cause!

In the NHL playoffs, the defending Stanley Cup champions are not going to go away without a fight. After losing the first three games to Vancouver, Chicago has now won two in a row. Habs fans have to be disappointed about Montreal losing back to back over time games. Had Montreal scored goals in each of those two over time games, they would have won the series four games to one, instead they trail Boston three games to two now. I watched the over time game at Winners, a great spot to catch a hockey game! There are only two Canadian based teams in the 2011 playoffs, and I really hope one or both of them make it to the second round!

Earth Day was on Saturday April 23rd. In celebration I had my Geography and Civics students do an outdoor activity. My students learned Cornwall is full of trash. Three different classes cleaned garbage along a radius of about three city blocks. We collected 10 large bags of garbage! Much of it was found in ditches and along the railroad tracks. We sorted through it, and a lot of the stuff we found was recyclable! Littering is very disrespectful. I wish more people had pride in their community! My students learned about civic responsibility and environmental stewardship. It was a very productive lesson. Remember, we celebrate Earth Day once a year, but every day is earth day!

PRESENCE KAREN CARRIERE'S EXHIBIT EXTENDED UNTIL MAY 5 by: Lor Pelton Do No Harm In the academy award winning film Doubt, starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, there is a wonderful scene where Hoffman’s character, a priest named Father Flynn, delivers an impactful sermon regarding innuendo and mis-truth. He relates a story of a parishioner who confesses that she is guilty of gossiping about one of her neighbors. As penance, the priest instructs her to return home, to retrieve one of her feather pillows from her bedroom and to take this to the roof of her apartment building. She is then instructed to cut open the pillow and to release all the feathers, allowing them to scatter across her neighborhood. She does so, and returns to the confessional awaiting further instructions.

On her second visit Father Flynn tells her to return to the neighborhood and to find all the feathers that were dispersed the previous day. She is stunned and tells him that his request is an impossible one. To this he replies that gossip, like feathers, goes everywhere. It is impossible to track it once it is released. Gossip does harm.

When I was a younger woman, and perhaps slightly less wise, I engaged in gossip, just as my friends and colleagues did. I don’t think I gave any thought to how much harm might come from it or where it eventually ended. I, like so many of us, simply spoke without considering the consequences. As I matured, I became less interested in perpetuating the gossip chain. I often refused to go to lunch with colleagues as I did not want to participate in the conversations, which were mostly founded on news and views of others not seated at the table. Yes, I was accused of being antisocial at times but I was clear that this was no longer perfect for me. I was choosing to do no harm.

In his book The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz teaches the importance of being impeccable with your word. This means speaking with integrity and saying only what you truly mean. He highlights the importance of avoiding using words against yourself or gossip about others; using the power of your words in the direction of truth and love.

Here is what most people don’t understand about gossip. The person it harms the most is the person initiating the gossip. When you choose to be out of integrity with others by telling mis-truths or exaggerating circumstances, you are out of integrity with yourself. The chances are that if you are gossiping about others, it is an effort to demean them. You do this because you do not feel good about yourself.

I want to ask all of you to assist me in ending gossip and engaging in conversations that promote truth and love. Do it for yourself first, understanding that to speak words of kindness is a gift to yourself. Whatever energy you give to the world, in words, thought or deeds, returns to you tenfold. That is just how it works. Choose to do no harm.

In the window of the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery a garden grows, planted and nurtured by artist and environmentalist Karen Carriere. When the exhibit (which is being held over for an extra week due to unrestrained joy) first opened, the plants were as tender as newborns, but have since grown into teenagers wild with blooming, champing on the bit to leap Pitt Street and colonize the Ruins of Truffles. Not only are flowers and vegetables growing with great enthusiasm, but also the occasional dandelion, a flower too, but one we've deemed weed. This inclusivity speaks the language of postmodernism, with its questioning of hierarchies and blurring of boundaries, and walks the path toward biodiversity, with its essential valuing of all living things, their environments, and their cultures.

Attached to the ceiling above the garden is a delicate pale cloud constructed from a grid of light metal covered with the fine grid of an ordinary window screen. The cloud's grid casts a shadow of doubt on the seeming innocence of the garden. Why was it made this way? What is it telling us?

Before the Renaissance, precontact (pre-dandelions), Europe's navigational territories were restricted to the waters hugging the coast.

Not until longitude and latitude's conceptual grid wrapped our globe were ships able to venture into the unknown, ushering in the age of colonialism with all its negative repercussions. This is one interpretation, but the power of an art image is that it refuses to be pinned down by a single view. It asks the viewer to engage in an intimate conversation, back and forth, and back and forth, like the ocean and the shore.

Streaming down from the cloud are strings of blue hemp raining into the garden, while multi-coloured beads, meditatively strung by the artist and visitors to the gallery, crawl back up ... like dew, like resilience, like hope.

For this viewer, spending time with the garden enlivened all my senses, including my mind, positioning me within the interrelatedness of nature and all its creatures, as if I were one of the beads, moving and breathing in the space between earth and sky, witnessing and being witnessed. And this is just the beginning of the exhibit!

Give yourself a gift, and come be still with this exhibition. Allow yourself to sense the Presence that Carriere has so generously made tangible for us.

Drink in its tactile beauty, notice its contradictions and its shadows, cast not only by the sculptural installations, but also by our fears for our planet. I had a question posed by one of my readers that asked the following:

we find our way.

"I have a teacher who says making a painting is like going on a trip - if we don't know where we're going, it's easy to get discouraged and give up before Is she right?"

Thank you for this question, Elaine, it is a good one. I believe this can apply to all forms of Creativity and although I love spontaneous in the moment painting for the most part this Teacher is correct. One part of the process in creating a painting for example, is to start with some sketches or thumbnails of the idea you are formulating. This process starts the groundwork for where you want to go to create a design that works. Scribbling notes or ideas gets the creative juices flowing and through working and reworking the idea on a scrap paper we begin to form the Road Map we need to take us in the right direction. This is a time honoured process that we can see even in the works of Da Vinci and Michelangelo who are revered as the great ones of Art. By laying down the direction you are going to take you can see early the problems you may encounter and take time to rework those issues by practicing what you need to do before you take it on. Say for example your painting requires hands in the composition, and hands are one of your weak areas, by realizing this ahead you could spend time drawing the gesture you will be painting over and over before you hit the canvas. Now when you apply this to your painting you have already worked out the kinks and are more confident to paint them.

Looking at this from another point of view if you are learning to paint, play guitar, dance or act you must have a clear idea of where these lessons are going to take you and that this is a process that has it’s ups and downs; successes and failures and realizing that will keep you from throwing in the towel just before you make a breakthrough. If you ask anyone that you consider talented at their art they will tell you that this is a process of life long learning and doesn’t happen with one lesson. Even the naturally gifted must work at their Art. When people ask me how long it took me to do that painting my answer is “50 years“. This is because it took me up to this moment to have travelled far enough along my journey as an Artist to do what I do.

The Road Map to Creating

The Call of the Wild When I was a small child I was pretty quiet. As a matter of fact, I was downright shy. “You should have said something”, my parents would say to me after we would finish visiting an extended family member’s home. Of course I would not answer, and would sit quietly in the back seat, during what seemed to be the long drive home. Today I am not shy. I am quiet, soft spoken, a low talker (for all you Seinfeld fan’s) and laid back, but defiantly not shy. I am telling you this because the shy child eventually grew into the wild child. I am sure many of you can relate, and some of you may still hear the call. What I call the call of the wild. The call to do things that can be harmful to us. The urge or craving to do the things that brings a temporary “rush” but can bring long term pain. The inner “call” to go wild.

Many of us have had very wild times in our lives. Rather than struggle with the guilt that may accompany it; or the shame, focus on having survived those turbulent times, both physically and emotionally. Some of us may not have not survived these wild times as well. As a result, some of us are scared, some of us have issues and some of us still crave the wild life. We want what she’s having. What we have never seems to satisfy that craving for excitement, for fun and for adventure. We get bored easy. We are never satisfied, we are never happy. It can be an inner battle that lasts a lifetime.

Some of us would love to continue to party way too much, to drink way too much, to do drugs, to gamble, to have multiple sexual partners, etc, etc, etc.

How do you ever finish “sowing your wild oats?” What does that even mean? I don’t even like oats. But how do you get control of the continued or occasional craving to just “go wild?” To “let your hair down?” To “blow off some steam?”

One way is to learn how to be happy. Learn how to be happy with the other things in life; the important things; the things that make your heart sing. Happiness really is a choice, it can be that simple. But getting to that place, where you can make that decision, is not always as simple. Oh sure, things like being with the same partner for the rest of your life may sound boring, if not downright frightening to some of us, but....... in your last and final hours on this earth would you rather have a peaceful ending and be looking into the eyes of someone who loves you rather than be alone, because you choose to listen to the call of the wild. You may get the call, but you don’t have to answer.

A muffin is so versatile. It can be your breakfast, lunch or an after school snack. You can add lots of healthy ingredients into them. Try adding some chia seeds or ground flax seed.

Dried fruit, chopped nuts or fresh blueberries or raspberries, all add extra nutrition in each muffin. If you plan to freeze extra muffins after baking, they will stay freshest if you wrap each individual muffin in plastic wrap first, then store them in a ziploc bag or tupperware, etc. Muffins taste best if warmed slightly, just 30 seconds in your microwave will bring them back to that "just out of the oven taste".

These are some of my families favourite muffins. I hope your family will enjoy them as well. Enjoy a great week!

TIPS FOR THE BEST MUFFINS EVER; Never overmix your muffin batter or they will turn out tough. Try counting each time you stir the dry and wet ingredients together. Ten times should be enough to incorporate the dry into the wet. As soon as you see the dry ingredients disappear, even if a few lumps remain, you're ready to scoop the batter.

I love to use a scoop, like an ice cream scoop, to fill my muffin cups. Each muffin will be then be the same size and they all will start out with a rounded top. We sell all different sized stainless steel scoops in my store, Sharyn"s Pantry.

To stop the muffins from sticking to the muffin papers, try using 2 muffin paper liners for each muffin. That seems to work well. I don't know the reason why, I just know that it works.

Be sure that your oven is pre-heated before you bake your muffins. Bake you muffins on the middle rack of your oven.

The muffins will be done when they are rounded on the tops, firm to the touch of your fingertip and when a tester inserted in the centre of one comes out clean.

After baking, allow the muffins to sit in their tins for 5 minutes to firm up, then place the muffins on a wire cooling rack to cool properly, or right into a basket on your table to enjoy eating with your family.

CARROT PINEAPPLE AND COCONUT MUFFINS

These are just plain delicious! Moist and full of flavour! The recipe makes 22 large muffins.

4 eggs 3 cups unbleached all purpose flour 1- 1/3 cups Crisco canola oil 2 level tsp. baking soda 4 tsp. pure vanilla 2 slightly rounded tsp. baking powder 1- 1/2 cups white sugar less than 1/2 tsp. salt 2/3 cup sweetned flake coconut 2 rounded tsp. ground cinnamon 1- 19 oz. can crushed pineapple 3 large carrots, grated ( you need about 2 cups grated carrots)

METHOD;

• Preheat your oven to 350 degree F. Line your muffin tins with 2 paper liners per cup. You will make 22 large muffins with this recipe.

• Open the can of pineapple and tip it over a strainer or sieve placed over a bowl to catch the juice. You won't use the juice in this recipe, just the pineapple. I added the drained pineapple juice to a container of orange juice for our breakfast juice, it was delicious. Press out all the juice using the back of a spoon.

• Grate the carrots, measure out the 2 cups and set this aside for a moment.

• Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon together.

• Stir in the grated carrots into the dry ingredients.

• Using the bowl I had used for the grated carrots (less dishwashing ha ha), beat the eggs, then add the oil, sugar and vanilla, mixing well.

• Add the drained, crushed pineapple to the egg mixture.

• Combine the coconut, dry ingredients and wet ingredients together, stirring only to mix.

Don't overmix or the muffins will be tough.

• Use an scoop to fill paper lined muffin cups nearly full.

• Place the muffins in your oven with the baking rack in the middle position.

• Bake the muffins for 30 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the centre of a muffin will come out clean.

• Allow the muffins to cool in the baking pan for 5 minutes before removing them to cool on a wire cooling rack. ENJOY!

REFRIGERATOR BRAN MUFFINS This is a great recipe. The batter will keep for six weeks in your fridge. When you feel like some fresh, warm muffins, just bake some. You will get your bran cereal in a muffin instead of a bowl!

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. 6 cups all bran cereal, divided 2- 1/2 cups white sugar 1 cup canola margarine 4 eggs, beaten 1 litre of buttermilk ( or use our buttermilk powder, using a 4 cup or 1 litre measuring cup, just mix 1 cup of buttermilk powder and add enough water to measure l litre) 5 cups unbleached all purpose flour 5 level tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. salt 2 cups boiling water 1- 1/2 cups of any of the following: raisins, chopped dates, apricots, dried cranberries. Any fruit you wish to use or a combination of any of the above. If you want to use fresh fruit, just add it into your muffin batter as you bake them. Don't add the fresh fruit into the whole batch of batter.

METHOD;

• Pour the 2 cups of boiling water over just 2 cups of the all bran cereal. Set this aside to cool to room temperature.

• Cream the margarine and the sugar.

• Add the eggs and beat well.

• Sift the flour, baking soda and salt together.

• Add the buttermilk alternately with the remaining 4 cups of the dry all bran • • • • •

cereal and the bowl to dry ingredients into the creamed sugar, margarine and egg mixture.

Now stir in the room temperature all bran cereal and water mixture.

Add the dried fruit you wish to use now. Mix well.

I use a plastic 4 litre ice cream container to hold the batter.

When you want to bake your muffins, place 2 paper muffin liners in each muffin cup, fill 3/4 full with batter using a handy scoop Bake the muffins on the middle rack of your pre-heated 400 degree F. oven for 20 minutes or until they test done. ENJOY!

Coping…..

A theme that is often heard in times of tragedy, is how will I cope with what has happened to me?

Whether it is a new prognosis or someone has received news that they did not expect, even good news needs a response.

Naturally, uncertainty and newness brings about an emotional response. At times it can lead to anxiety, and for many this anxiety may come from ones ability or inability to cope.

In the Christian tradition of Easter recently celebrated, an example of coping is found in the life of Christ, lived in sacrifice for the betterment of others. His life of hope and forgiveness helped his followers cope with the reality, and uncertainty of their own lives.

With this example of coping found in the death, burial and resurrection, one learns a great deal about he positive coping strategies offered through Faith in God. Here are four points of reflection on effective coping: By cognitively restructuring ones situation it helps one to see their situation in a larger more meaningful framework. This helps to control and regulate your responses to stress.

Earth Matters Exhibit student submission by Trina M-P. Grade 4

Roxanne Carrière-Delage, Marc Carrière and Jacqueline Milner met at the beginning of the year to discuss putting together an Environmental Exhibit which would include Visual Artists, Performing Artists and Regional Students. The original plan was to host an Exhibit at one location over an approximate six week period with an opening and midexhibit open-house featuring regional musical/spoken word Artists performing environmental related cover or original scores. This original plan did not materialize, however four different locations in the Cornwall Downtown core were happy to host different portions of the Exhibit, which benefited the participating artists by giving us space to display the work, benefited the participating organizations and businesses by perhaps introducing new people to their organizations and finally benefiting the visiting public by introducing them to Regional Artists, their messages and perhaps introducing them to community businesses and people they may have never met without this opportunity.

CORNWALL SQUARE, 1 Water St. E., is hosting large canvases created by area children over the March Break in an event which partnered The Square with L'Association Focus Art Association. These canvases will be on display in the Administration Hallway upstairs until the end of May. THE CORNWALL PUBLIC LIBRARY is the host location for our Regional Student submissions. They can be found in two display cases in the hallway leading from the front of the library to the back, in a circular cabinet at the bottom of the stairs, at the top of the stairs and in the hallway leading to the children's library. Last but not least, the considerable talents of Regional Artists Ms. Charlotte King and Mr. Daniel Archibald will be featured in the South Reading Room of the library from May 7th to May 30th.

THE AMAZING STORY OF THE BIRTH OF THE PARADE OF NATIONS with and hopefully in the spring, she and Rudy Tabak, the master mind behind the construction of the project, will be able to erect the Administration Building/Warehouse. This building will store 30,000 items to be showcase in 12 buildings of their 8 to10 year’s project. When Marie passes away, she is donating the museum - whose name will soon be change to the Collector’s Village - as a not-for-profit organization to the people of Akwesasne, Cornwall and SD&G. Morrell’s other dream is that the citizens from the area will never be forgotten and there would be at least a page telling about their life and kept in her museum. Many people have already donated items to the museum. Every item is documented along with a brief of history about the person donating it.

To truly understand what the organization Parade of nations is all about, we need to look at all the pieces of the puzzle. This will take us back a century ago, on May 23rd, 1902, in Nigauwack New Brunswick, when Léandre Robichaud, Marie Morrell’s father was born. At the beginning of his life, Léandre’s mother, a native of the Tobique First Nation, had a nervous break down and was put in an asylum. The children were told their mother died and the father not being able to look after them decided to give them all away.

Léandre, age 10, ended up on a farm in Halifax. The farmer would beat him up every day to make him work faster and harder. Léandre, whose body could not take the pain any longer, escaped. He knocked on the Halifax jailer’s door to ask for refuge and help. The jailer who saw an opportunity to make a few coins sold Léandre, as a slave, to the Morning Star China Clipper’s Captain, who was in town. This sailing vessel of the mid-19th century, with tall masts, came to port every 18 months from Liverpool, England. Léandre was bought and branded.

In those days vessels’ owners tattooed the picture of the ship on the slaves’ arm to find them if they escaped.

Léandre sailed away with a broken heart.

From the “Morning Star” to the Barnum and Bailey Circus On the vessel, Léandre was ordered to go up the mats for look out duties and repairs and soon found out he was not scared of heights. Eighteen months had passed and the ship was back to Halifax. A huge commotion was taking place in town because the arrival of Barnum and Bailey Circus. Everyone was watching the floats going by.

Léandre, who was then 12, saw an opportunity to escape. He followed the circus until he found the cook and asked him to hide him in a potato bag. The cook who could use a helper did not hesitate to acquiesce to his request. Léandre once more was on his way to freedom.

Once with the circus, Léandre needed to earn his keep.

Even at this early age, he was extremely talented; he could carve and paint. Léandre asked the circus people to let him paint their advertisings signs and soon became their official artist, under the name Leon. As time went by, a circus entertainer talking to Léandre finds he worked on the mats of the Morning Star. On the spot, the entertainer asks him to consider being trained as a trapeze artist with his troop. Léandre never missed an opportunity to learn something new. He spent over 20 years with the circus; he just loved the people and the challenges.

After her first year living in Cornwall, Morrell wanted to do something to help the area’s multiculture and arts of all kinds, thank the people for what they were doing for their community, help small businesses, celebrate our people ancestral origins and above all do her share, like so many, to put Cornwall and area on the map.

Léandre Robichaud family. In those day, people who where physically challenged (people who were deformed), would join the circus to show themselves to the public to earn a living.

There were also all kinds of performers and artists following the circus to sell their products. Léandre loved every single person within his new family and always did everything he could to protect and help them. He also told them as often as he could he love them because no one had ever told him he was loved. He treated others the way he wished to be treated.

Finally in 1947, Léandre got married. He had only one child, a daughter, he called Marie. The lessons to his daughter: love everyone equally, including those developmentally challenged; develop a passion and learn to appreciate all art forms and history; never judge anyone, you will never be able to fully understand what he/she was exposed to or what he/she had been through; embrace everyone you meet as your new family no matter where they come from no matter the color of their skin; protect nature; learn through the wisdom of the elders, feel and imagine your dreams as they would have already happened; and above all, never be afraid to tell people you love them, they eventually will say it back to you.

Because she cared and loved her father so much, Marie, at age 12, promised him she would build a museum to display his art along with all the art forms of the people she would encounter, including a representation of their personal passions. She promised to let people know about our world through everyone’s ancestral origins.

The day came, in 2004, when after retiring from a career in the Government and as a private consultant; Marie finally found the perfect piece of land, in the Cornwall area, to fulfill her promise. The land is located across Guindon Park on Highway #2 (Vincent Massey Drive) just before entering Long Sault. Still after five years, because of the City of Cornwall and South Stormont bureaucratic delays, Marie Morrell is even more determine to fulfill her dream and promise.

Birth of the Parade of nations As a result on April 22nd, 2007, the Parade of nations was born to promote our area’s culture and multiculturalism. The first year, 65 country flags were displayed in addition to many floats. In 2008, the Parade organization proposed to help those developmentally challenged, of Akwesasne, Cornwall and SD&G, for the purpose of being understood and accepted within the community, through a program called “A Light in the Tunnel”.

In 2009, the parade evolved into a festival because food vendors, artists, artisans, small businesses and all types of organizations did not want to set up for only one afternoon. In 2010, through Elaine Macdonald, City of Cornwall Councillor, the Sunday Kite Festival was added to the celebration.

As everyone knows, it is hard to find volunteers and funds especially if you are the new kid on the block.

Every year, the Parade/Festival barely survives thanks to the $3000 donation of the City of Cornwall used to defrayed the cost of the liability insurance, as well as free services provided by X-Design, Mai-Liis the Graphic Designer, Visual Ads, The Local Seeker, Versacore and Sign First, the generosity of the citizens, the local newspapers, many ethic groups, volunteers, local businesses and the sponsors listed on the Parade of nations website.

In addition, the Festival of the Parade of Nations now requires over to 300 volunteers just to carry the country flags constituting the historical ancestral genetic make up (including the flags of countries that no longer exist).

For Marie Morrell, when schools reopen, it is a great opportunity to recruit volunteers and students who requires their 40 hours of community services.

In 2011, Morrell will be sending a request to the City of Cornwall to have the weekend of the Parade of nations dedicated to the Citizens of the community.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY IN CORNWALL The Holocaust, though a tragic event from not so long ago, is quickly fading from our collective memory.

by Gary Friedman There are only a few survivors left to relate their first-hand stories of bearing witness to the mass murder of over six million people. As the last of these now elderly survivors pass on, they are leaving no one to bear personal testimony to their nightmarish experiences during World War Two. Who in future generations will have the presence of mind to say "never again" and will remain vigilant against the threat of further genocides?

The Jews set aside in their calendar of observances a Holocaust Memorial Day, called Yom HaShoah, which this year is being observed on May 2nd. Yom HaShoah is the only observance in the Jewish calendar that brings together in a more formal manner both Jews and non-Jews.

Toward this objective, an eclectic group of six of us have decided in 2011 to organize in Cornwall our own public observance of Holocaust Memorial Day. There will be a solemn program of remembrance which includes reminiscences of survivors, multimedia presentations, and exhibits.

The event will be held between 4:00 and 6:00 P.M. this coming Monday afternoon, May 2nd, at Knox-St.Paul's United Church which is located at 800 12th Street East.

Just what was The Holocaust?

It was a systematic, planned program of genocide to exterminate all Jews. This government-based program was carried out

by Adolf Hitler and segments of German society in conjunction with other foreign nationals during World War Two. Approximately 6 million Jews were killed and, if you count the murder of the Romany, other European civilians and prisoners, the disabled, homosexuals, and individuals who opposed Hitler’s religious, political and social views, the mass murder would number anywhere from 11 to 17 million people.

In the aftermath of this mass murder, humanity said "never again". It extended empathy to large numbers of people previously considered to be less than human.

This included women, homosexuals, the disabled, people of colour, and ethnic and religious minorities. The Holocaust encoded our sensitivity in the form of social rights and policies, human rights laws, and now even statutes to protect animals. Our spirit of inclusivity for "the other", "the alien", and "the unrecognized" continues to be enhanced by our ability to remember events like the Holocaust.
