about the cover From Entra nce t o Fina le Every wedding has a beginning, middle and finale, notes photographer Jessica Maynard, whose work graces the cover of the premiere edition Jessica Maynard of the Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide. “It’s my job to make sure I don’t leave out important parts of that story. I try to picture the day as it will be in the wedding album,” Jessica says. In her 10 years as a wedding photographer, she has told many great stories through her imagery. One of her favorites is about Ashley Thayer, the bride on our cover. “She’s just a gorgeous bride,” Jessica says. “She was really relaxed and happy. She had the kind of beauty that starts deep inside.” The bride and her groom, Austin, met when Ashley was living in Minneapolis; Austin was in Anchorage. On her way to visit him in Alaska for the first time, Mount Redout erupted, and volcanic ash caused last-minute changes to her flight plans. An avalanche added further complications, and in the end, Austin’s friend picked her up at the airport. “After all that, there was no romantic airport scene,” Ashley jokes. 4
Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2011
She posed for the cover shot at her wedding atop the gondola, with the valley sprawling below her. “It was one of those days when everything comes together,” Jessica recalls. “The clouds, the lighting: the sun fell right on her.” The venue is one of Jessica’s favorites. “The staff at the mountain really does a great job.” She also loves shooting weddings at Catamount Ranch & Club, south of Steamboat. “The lake, the hills, the lawn and the fence all make great backdrops for shooting. And the managers there make things flow easily for the bride.” Jessica’s background in fine arts photography and photojournalism add to her artistic style. “I like fun. One couple climbed a tree in their wedding attire. I love it when they’re interacting with each other and they forget I’m even there,” Jessica says. Choosing a wedding photographer “is about more than the bottom line,” she advises brides. “Look into the photographer’s style and see if it meshes with yours. Get references from previous brides – that’s really important.” Jessica is traveling this winter to India and Nepal. She will be booking weddings for the 2011 wedding season via her website while traveling in Asia. For more information, visit www.jessica-maynard.com.

Sa lsa Adds Spice t o Ceremony The Proposal Fred proposed while the couple was sitting on the beach in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Fred had to wait several extra months to propose after the trip to Mexico was postponed due to the swine flu outbreak. 16 Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2011

Why Steamboat? Fred owns a vacation property in Steamboat, where the family frequently visits from Denver. “It’s where our relationship grew,” Claudia said.

Pre-Wedding The couple hosted a Latin-themed party at Hazie’s. With many international guests, the couple wanted to make sure everyone got to have a top-of-the-ski-mountain experience.

The wedding took place at Catamount Lodge. The couple personalized their vows and friend John Hickenlooper, mayor of Denver, married them.
The Reception
www.AndrewClarkPhotography.com
About 160 people attended the reception, held in a tent at Catamount. There was a lively band, a huge liquor selection and toasts from family members. “When Fred’s son stood up and toasted my daughter, it was incredibly meaningful,” Claudia said. “The toasts were to us as a family.”
Food & Cake The buffet-style dinner had seafood, pasta and meat stations. Instead of having a wedding cake, Claudia and Fred opted for cupcakes.

Personal Touches As part of the ceremony, Claudia, Fred and their children, ages 11, 19 and 22, poured different colors of sand into a single container to symbolize the uniting of their two families.
Memorable Moment During the reception, Claudia’s young daughter Isabella played a song on the piano for the couple while Fred’s children stood with her. “It was incredibly touching because it was unplanned,” Claudia said.
First Dance Claudia and Fred performed a salsa dance they had worked on for months. “It was half a year of practice!” Claudia said.

Steamboat Surprise Pouring rain. Though the foul weather was unexpected and they missed out on the scenery of an outdoor wedding, Claudia reports no regrets about being crowded into the Catamount Lodge. “The weather just changed the dynamics and made it incredibly intimate,” she said.

Anna Stark & John Mancuso

A Most A ma zin g Event By Deborah Olsen Photography by Corey Kopischke
The Proposal
The Ceremony
One year before their wedding, Anna and John rode the gondola during a visit to Steamboat. When Anna turned around outside Thunderhead, there was John, on his knee. “We were married in the same place, on the same date,” Anna says.
The groom’s family’s priest read the couple’s vows, in the form of letters they had written to each other. Anna walked down the aisle to “Pachelbel’s Canon,” and “Signed, Sealed and Delivered” was the recessional.
Why Steamboat? Anna grew up in Fort Collins and visited Steamboat often with her parents, who eventually bought a place here. “I’ve always known since I was a little girl that I wanted to get married in Steamboat.”
Cocktails and hors d ‘oeuvres were on the patio, and dinner was served on the third floor of Thunderhead, with dance music provided by Funkiphino, a 14-piece band from Denver. The party continued at the Grand after the gondola closed at midnight.
Pre-wedding Activities
Food & Wine
Rainbow Weekend entertained the 130 guests who came to town for their wedding. Welcome bags contained visitor information and the bridal couple’s schedule for the week. Shannon Ford at the Grand was instrumental in planning activities, Anna says.
Anna chose Colorado grass-fed beef and Rocky Mountain trout for the entrées, and had tableside wine service for the elegant dinner. The Steamboat Cake Lady prepared two flavors of cupcakes, with a traditional wedding cake topper.

Wedding party atop the gondola. Bridesmaids each chose their own black cocktail dress.
Personal Touches
Most Memorable Moment
Anna’s mother grew wheatgrass to fill wine crates for the placecard holders, and she collected decorative hand towels and cosmetics to enhance the bathrooms.
“My favorite memory is walking down the steps from the gondola building.” Against the spectacular mountain backdrop, Anna’s friends and family, John and John’s family priest were all gathered, smiling.
A family friend created unique, gold menu placecards and Anna’s dad, brother, maid of honor and the best man added their own touches with humorous, touching and personal speeches. 28 Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2011
First Dance John surprised his bride by asking the band to play “Drifting” by Trey Anastasio of Phish, a song that had special meaning for the couple.
Steamboat Surprise Threatening clouds stopped the groom and his men from boarding the gondola, after the bride and her party were already atop. But a small patch of blue provided hope. The wedding went ahead as planned, with an incredible sunset following the ceremony. “It was really unbelievable,” Anna says. “We were so lucky.”

A Steamboat Honeymoon
Unwind after the wedding with a couple’s massage.
Three Ma g ica l Days in Pa radise By Gena Fischer
DAY 1: A honeymoon in Steamboat Springs can be simply magical. Summer or winter, sunlight is likely to shine on your days. Soaking in a natural hot springs or floating through Steamboat’s legendary powder are just two of the many ways to spend those precious honeymoon days. With so many choices, we mapped out a perfect Steamboat honeymoon.
30 Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2011
After an exhausting but wonderful wedding, wake up refreshed in your suite at one of Steamboat’s premier resorts: the Sheraton, Steamboat Grand, Highmark or Holiday Inn. Pick up a Euro-style lunch to go at Drunken Onion in Wildhorse Marketplace for your drive to Fish Creek Falls trail, four miles from downtown. A beautiful waterfall is just minutes from the parking lot, perfect for photographs whether cascading in springtime or frozen in the winter.
Take an afternoon soak at the “Heart Spring” at Old Town Hot Springs, then enjoy a wonderful dinner at Cottonwood Grill, with its delicious Pacific Rim cuisine and romantic ambience.
DAY 2: A relaxing couples’ massage at All Seasons Wellness Spa is a great way to begin Day 2, followed by an authentic Texas-style BBQ lunch at the Smokehouse downtown. Nearby Emerald Mountain is your destination this afternoon, whether it’s hiking, biking or horseback riding in summer or snowshoeing and cross country skiing in winter. Either way, end the day with fine wine and mouthwatering Italian entrées at Riggio’s, then take a stroll down the block to
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for homemade fudge for dessert.
DAY 3: Rise early for a morning of fishing or skiing Steamboat’s trademark Champagne Powder®, followed by a late lunch at Rex’s American Bar & Grill – the buffalo burger is Colorado’s finest. Then head downtown to enjoy souvenir shopping – check out F.M. Light and Sons, a western wear store that has been in Steamboat for more than 100 years. For a fitting finale to your Steamboat honeymoon, enjoy a romantic dinner atop the mountain at Hazie’s, with elegant food and the incredible views. Watching the gorgeous sunset over the valley is a magical end to your Steamboat honeymoon.

#1 Piece of Advice:

Don’t . . . . . . invite everyone you know – keep it to the people who matter. . . . let the wedding be the only time you see your guests – we had a rehearsal dinner and barbecue to take advantage of time with people we don’t see often.

For Grooms Only
Spring Kayaking & Whitewater Rafting Local kayakers have worked closely with the city parks & recreation department to create a kayaker’s paradise on the Yampa River as it flows through the city. Carefully placed rocks form play holes, and the city hosts a river festival each June. The whitewater runs high in spring, but settles into a relaxing flow for tubers by July. Nearby sections of the Elk and Yampa rivers, plus other streams, offer Class IV & V runs in spring. Rock Climbing Routt County has great beginner to intermediate rock climbing, where never-evers or those with indoor wall experience can enjoy the thrill of several single-pitch or multi-pitch climbs near Steamboat. Check with local guide services and outdoor shops. 46 Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2011

From flowers and lace to hairdos and shoes, weddings seem to be oriented toward the ladies. But when the ceremony is set in Steamboat Springs, the groom and his men find their days filled with adventure, regardless of the season.
Summer Mountain, Road and Downhill Biking A designated “bike-friendly” community, Steamboat boasts literally hundreds of miles of mountain-bike trails, several inviting road loops and new downhill trails constructed in summer 2010, with more planned for 2011. Stop by the Chamber Visitors Center for a map of trails, or take a tour with a local guide. Alpine Slide The 2,400-foot Howler Alpine Slide
Andrew Jacoby arrives for his wedding via float boat.
lets you turn faster than an Olympian as you zoom down Howelsen Hill on your own sled. Twin tracks feature six 90째 turns and eight 180째 turns.
Fall Hunting With one of the largest elk herds in North America, Routt National Forest offers prime hunting from September (archery & muzzle-loaders) through November. Deer are abundant too. Limited moose, bear and pronghorn licenses are also issued. Local shooting ranges are open to the public, as is a sporting clay range.
For more information, contact the Forest Service or a local outfitter.
Winter Powder Skiing The mountains around Steamboat are renowned for abundant, light powder. Nowhere more so than Buffalo Pass, which is famous for creating its own weather patterns and setting snowfall records. Steamboat Powdercats take guests into the backcountry in comfortable, warm 12passenger snowcats. Ski with people at the same skill level, set first tracks all day and savor a gourmet lunch. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com

Snowmobiling While the Steamboat Ski Area has long garnered attention for its legendary powder, Routt National Forest has become equally well known for its miles and miles of snowmobile trails. From gentle hills to steep pitches guaranteed to start the adrenalin flowing, the terrain is both expansive and exciting. Rent equipment and tour the high country with a reputable guide.
Year-round Fly Fishing Rivers, lakes and streams around Steamboat are well-known for fly fishing, specifically rainbow, brook,
brown and cutthroat trout. A record pike was caught at Stagecoach Reservoir in 2006 (30 lbs., 11 oz.; 46.5 inches). Guide services take guests on private waters; fishing is generally excellent on the Yampa River within the city itself. The fishing is great, winter and summer alike. Microbrewery Mahogany Ridge, Steamboat’s only microbrewery, makes beer on-site. Beers rotate seasonally, but the ‘Hog generally offers six to eight beers of varying styles on any given night. A tip for the guys: The ladies might like to join you on these outings; if they don’t, bragging about what a perfect day you had might not be the best idea…
