About the Cover:

Legendary Steamboat Springs’ photographer Rod Hanna took this photograph of the Milky Way over the Sleeping Giant at 3:30 a.m. one morning last October.

He captured the image during a quarter-moon, when the mountain was illuminated but moonlight did not overpower the stars. Although this moon cycle occurs twice a month, Hanna also had to wait for the Milky Way to line up over the Sleeping Giant. “This took a bit of research and trial-and-error,” Hanna notes.

If you’ve been reading “Steamboat Magazine” for the last 34 years, you have Eleanor Bliss and Carol Finnoff, founders of the met these people on our Steamboat Springs Arts Council pages. We’re proud of our role in chronicling the stories of Routt County residents.

This is our annual Locals’ Edition, but as our former sales rep, Dave Lawler, is famous for saying, “Every issue is a locals’ issue.”

A community that does not honor the contributions of its members becomes a town without memory. If we don’t pay tribute to those who have given their hearts to us, who will do so in the future?

Yet I sometimes wonder: can a resort town, with its constant influx of newcomers, have a collective memory?

In a difficult economy, putting revenue ahead of investment in our heritage is the easy route. But hanging on to the spirit on which this town is founded will get us through the tough times.

Take, for instance, Eleanor Bliss. Her campaign to “Save the Depot” resulted in the preservation of this historic landmark as a home for the Steamboat Springs Arts Council.

Eleanor was the first female member of the Explorers Club, headquartered in New York and populated by people like Robert Perry (arguably the first to the North Pole), Roald Amundsen (South Pole), Sir Edmund Hillary, Neil Armstrong and Steamboat’s own Eugene Buchanan. Eleanor could have devoted her resources to building a monastery in Tibet or a research station in Antarctica, but instead, she fought tooth and nail to save Steamboat Springs’ train depot as a home for the Arts Council.

Today the arts flourish here. So do sports, agriculture and community spirit. In this edition, we meet “the stars of summer” in these four dynamic arenas. Some are already legendary; as for the others, it’s only a matter of time.

Also in this edition is Dr. Dale Miquelle, the coordinator of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Russia Program, which is working to protect large carnivores and their ecosystems. Miquelle will join “New York Times” bestselling author John Vaillant (“The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival,” 2010), in Steamboat Springs this summer to discuss the future of Siberian tigers.

This summer also marks the debut of writer Susan Cunningham on our pages. Cunningham has traveled to the bottom of the ocean as a researcher, covered mountain town news as a reporter, and helped manufacture cozy wool socks as a sourcing manager. Her life has changed since the birth of her children. Readers gain insight into the (mis) adventures of life in the outdoors with a young family in her all-too-true tale, “Family Camping — the Unvarnished Truth.”

Rod Hanna, whose work first appeared in “Steamboat Magazine” in its second edition, Summer 1979, returns to the publication in honor of his 50th anniversary as a photographer. We’ve devoted our opening pages, “Genuine Steamboat,” to the man whose portfolio honors the town that so loves his work. Rod’s career began as a reporter in Davenport, Iowa, and includes tenure at the Topeka, Kan., “CapitalJournal,” the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos and finally, the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp.

His work has appeared in “Sports Illustrated,” “People,” “National Geographic,” “Time,” “Newsweek” and “Travel & Leisure.” He has published two books, “Seasons of Light – Impressions of Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley” and “Seasons of Gold.”

Dear Deb, Hats off to “Steamboat Magazine” for its article in the Spring 2012 issue on the subject of fossil fuel drilling and fracking. It objectively addresses this “hot button” issue in our county, state and nation. The story accurately pointed out the concerns and the need for proper regulation. The article also cited a preliminary draft EPA report linking fracking to a ground water problem at one site in Wyoming. This association has not been verified by the final report. This issue was put into context by relating that over 1 million wells have been fracked, in some form, in the United States over the last 50-plus years with as many as 35,000 wells being fracked annually.

Our society can benefit by keeping this issue in proper perspective. We need a balanced energy approach consisting of appropriately regulated fossil fuel and alternative energy sources, while protecting the environment. Hopefully, we can all agree that the goal is to minimize importing $100-plus-a-barrel oil from regions that aren’t exactly our “best friends.”

Steamboat Magazine, “I just returned home to Maine from a fabulous vacation visiting my daughter (who attends and appreciates Colorado Mountain College) in Steamboat Springs. I stayed at the Bear Claw II Condominiums, where everything was perfect...the view of the mountains (and the Sleeping Giant), the accommodations, the hot tub and pool, and most importantly the people who work there are so personable, from the front desk to the shuttle drivers and bartender! I enjoyed walking, shopping and all of the art downtown, dancing at the free concert at the base of the mountain to Keller Williams and to the South by South Africa band at the Old Town Pub & Restaurant (where we also had a mighty fine bison burger with elk sausage!), hiking, spring skiing, a dunk in the Strawberry Park Hot Springs under the stars, an incredible raindrop massage by Sarah Braat of Sage Healing Arts (mmmm), a qigong class and a chakra balancing dance class at the Yoga Center of Steamboat (beautiful location on the river) watching people play in kayaks on the river and...

Word spreads quickly in a small town like Steamboat Springs. And when the buzz reached us about the incredible work photographer Karen Schulman is producing — with an iPhone — and that she’s teaching those skills, we wanted to hear the story for ourselves.

Steamboat Magazine: Karen, you’ve been a professional photographer for more than 30 years. Why the iPhone?

Karen Schulman: First of all, I almost always have the iPhone with me, so when I see something that would make a great photo, the camera is there. The quality on my 4S is amazing, sharp, clear and bright. It brings back the excitement I felt when I first got into photography. Now it’s possible to adjust and manipulate images immediately after shooting.

SM: We’ve been hearing a lot about your iPhone photo classes. Are you planning to continue them through the summer?

KS: Absolutely! It’s been a blast. I’ve been leading photo workshops and tours for close to 30 years and these have been some of the most fun. In addition to incorporating iPhone photo instruction into our annual summer workshops, and continuing our multi-week iPhoneography classes, we’ll be offering some 2- to 3-hour mini iPhoneography workshops.

SM: Most users are aware that smart phones can be used to take basic photos, but what you’re doing goes beyond pointand-shoot. Are smart phones smarter than most of us know?

KS: The iPhone 4S has an 8mp camera that is very high quality, with features like built-in HDR (high dynamic range), a lens that actually focuses, face recognition, built-in flash and simple editing capabilities. But the real power comes from the hundreds of photo apps that are available for the newer iPhones.

SM: Can images be manipulated or altered on the iPhone?

KS: Certainly! That’s where the fun begins. I have about 100 photo apps on my iPhone — about a dozen that are my regular “go-to” apps. With apps, you can do just about anything you can do in Photoshop, only easier and for much less money. Additionally, apps can give your photos vintage looks, grunge looks; they can add textures, vignettes, borders and frames and lighting effects. There are even apps that can change your photos to look like a sketch, a pen-andink drawing or a painting.

SM: Can you give us some examples?

KS: I do have a few favorites: Snapseed, for iPad and iPhone, is great for image adjustments and varied effects, and it’s easy to use. I’m a big fan of Hipstamatic because it brings back the look, feel, unpredictability and fun of old-time and plastic cameras with its combinations of “lenses” and “films” (really filters).

Touch Retouch is a great app — easy to use. No more telephone poles growing out of your friends’ heads.

Autostitch is an amazing tool for creating panoramas.

I also really like TrueHDR, which allows me to get the best exposure in tough lighting situations.

SM: Do iPhone images have high-resolution options?

KS: Definitely. My husband, Joel, a fine-art printer, has been printing images from the iPhone 4S as large as 20”X30”. Many photographers won’t need to go this large, but it’s nice to know you can. (Most photo apps give you a choice of output resolution size, so if you’re planning on doing anything with your photos other than posting to social networking sites or emailing them, choose the highest resolution.) Of course, just like any camera, the iPhone is only a tool, and it’s still up to the user to create quality photography.

SM: Tell us about the imagery your students have created.

KS: My students’ images are everything imaginable, including scenic panoramas, close-ups, family portraits, night shots, artistic abstracts and wild creative composites.

SM: So, do you still use your other cameras?

KS: That’s a good question. Not much. It depends on where I am. On some of my international photo tours, where there is abundant wildlife, for instance, I may still need the capabilities of my trusty Nikon and its lenses, but add-on lenses, tripod adapters and other cool accessories for the iPhone give you more flexibility. So, don’t be surprised if you see me around town toting my tripod and rolling bag full of iPhone photo accessories!

Zirkel Treks Combine Discovery With Art

Art and exploration intersect in the life of Michael Charron. Since 2006, he has been hiking and painting in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area.

“I think I have painted more pictures of the Zirkels than some people have taken photos,” Charron says. “It’s a large wilderness, so it’s a time commitment to explore it – I still haven’t seen it all.”

The Denver-based artist usually enters the wilderness in early July. For the past five years, he has spent at least four weeks there each summer.

The results are contemporary realistic paintings of the wilderness area that spans 160,000-plus acres in Northwest Colorado. The headwaters of the Elk, Encampment and North Platte rivers lie within the area, which straddles the

Charron paints alla prima plein air, which means he paints outdoors and develops each work from start to finish in one session using a wet-on-wet technique. He also sketches and takes photos along his journey, then spends winters developing them into full-scale studio oil paintings.

Charron likens his work to that of the Hudson River School, a group of 19th century painters whose themes included discovery, exploration and settlement. “I’ve always viewed what I do as exploration,” he says.

Charron treks with four llamas and moves his camp about every five or six days. He seeks hot springs and occasionally finds old encampments while moving through the wilderness.

Charron encounters wildlife ranging from countless birds, elk and deer to bear. He has heard a mountain lion roaring, but has yet to see one. The most frightening aspect of the wilderness

is the lightning, Charron says. Sometimes storms force him into his tent for extended periods, which he spends reading, meditating or praying.

Recently, Charron made a foray into the realm of abstract art. Inspired by the light falling across rock formations in the wilderness, he created a series he calls “Geoextractions,” which form a subset of his exhibit this summer at the Artistica Art Gallery in Denver.

Charron harkens back to a centuries-old form of funding his enterprises. He creates a syndicate, wherein patrons pay a set fee for a predetermined number of paintings from a particular trek.

Andrés Cárdenes and Monique Mead Directing Strings’ Silver Anniversary

Andrés Cárdenes appeared early on at Steamboat Springs’ 25-year-old Strings Music Festival. The Cuban-born violinist arrived in 1992 for a two-week stint as a festival musician and hasn’t skipped a season since. From the first time he brought along violinist Monique Mead, then his soon-to-be bride, the two were destined for a long tenure in Steamboat.

“I have never felt better than in the atmosphere right here,” Mead says. “The festival just struck me immediately as a place where I could definitely hang my hat.” The couple married in 2003, never missing a beat as devoted Strings musicians while they had two kids and managed high-profile music careers.

This year, Strings’ silver anniversary season marks Cárdenes and Mead’s third as the festival’s music directors.

Their work is collaborative – Cárdenes is the mastermind behind the programming while Mead acts as artistic adviser in seeking out pieces that fit and musicians to play them.

Since Strings Music Festival founders Kay Clagett and Betse Grassby first sat outside the Steamboat Athletic Club praying a few folks would come for a small chamber music performance in 1988, Strings has grown into a premier destination festival.

Over 25 years, the venue has evolved from a deck to a tent to the permanent architectural marvel that is the Strings Music Pavilion.

Clagett says bringing Cárdenes and Mead to the helm at Strings was the next logical step in keeping the festival musically significant.

While each music director has put a personal stamp on Strings’ repertoire, Cárdenes and Mead have ushered in an era of growth and prominence on the national radar that includes more contemporary music and a devotion to cultivating future audiences.

“You can never replace an audience, but you can augment them,” says Cárdenes, who has focused on bringing accessible, meaningful, diverse music to Steamboat via living composers – including several world premieres along with the classics people love.

“The world premieres have put Strings on the map culturally,” Cárdenes says. And those premieres have stemmed directly from Cárdenes’ personal connections honed while playing as a soloist with more than 100 orchestras, leading 21 seasons as concertmaster of the Pittsburgh

They bring us a lot of attention and notoriety. It puts on a very brave face for other organizations.”

Cárdenes and Mead are based in Pittsburg, but their work for Strings is a year-round job. Lining up artists often takes years. The couple travels incessantly, sometimes passing off parental duties in mid-airport exchanges. Since ending his Pittsburg Symphony tenure, Cárdenes travels more than ever as a guest conductor, soloist and master teacher.

Mead is acclaimed for her ability to speak about music and frequents Germany as a soloist and youth concert presenter.

She built a strong fan base there when she launched a program bridging music and soccer, which included professional athletes.

Both Cárdenes and Mead are affiliated with Carnegie Mellon, where Cárdenes is a full tenured professor and Mead teaches at the preparatory school. Mead also manages a Pittsburg Symphony program for children.

An early career tour with Leonard Bernstein influenced Mead immensely. “I realized that communication is the key. If you play music and it doesn’t mean anything to people and if people aren’t coming to concerts because they feel like it is far from them to grasp, then we are doing something wrong,” she says.

Cárdenes invests tremendous thought in how to grow Strings’ audience while challenging visiting musicians. “They need to feel, when they’re playing, like it’s more than being rehashed. We give our musicians something to look forward to so they can also grow and can have good experiences musically,” he says.

Cárdenes has fond memories of Strings’ “tent” era, but he applauds the pavilion as the advance of a quarter-century from small town to culturally significant community. He says

musicians he hopes to lure to Steamboat are “flabbergasted” at the venue: “It’s a great attraction. Now, there’s nothing to keep them from coming.”

For its 25th anniversary season, Strings is hosting heritage concerts that honor the old and bring in the new — a jazzaccompanied dance choreography collaboration with PerryMansfield; a show of Yampa Valley photography by Rod Hanna, Judy Jones and Jim Steinberg set to “Appalachian Spring” and a side-by-side concert featuring local teachers and their students playing Mozart’s 40th symphony. While audiences can expect to see long-time favorite festival musicians on stage this summer, Cárdenes and Mead have also started looking toward the future by bringing in young, exciting and talented musicians that are up-and-coming, newly-established but unfamiliar to Steamboat.

In their own home, the pair is unfailingly devoted to the future of music. Cárdenes’ and Mead’s children, Isabel, 8, and Tino, 7, both play the piano. They live amid a variety of instruments to experiment with – although neither has yet clamored for the violin. Fortunately there are two pianos in the pavilion, so the kids practice early each day in opposing dressing rooms before the festival musicians arrive. Both children celebrate their birthdays in Steamboat, and last year they played in the opening concert, making their Strings debut.

Clagett expresses deep appreciation for Cárdenes’ sense of humor and the working relationship Strings has fostered with the directing duo. “They are creative, responsive to the community, and they have connections with people who love to work together,” she says. “We’re constantly trying to figure out what the next pocket of music is in Steamboat. You’ve got to evolve.”

Steamboat wife and mom Krysta MacGray, whose blog, “My Life In Food,” gets more than 30,000 hits per month.

Krysta MacGray makes all of her recipes at least twice: once following the recipe, and a second time to improve it.

When she finds the perfect mix of flavor, texture, color and smell, she blogs about it, adding her layers of engaging stories and vivid photographs.

MacGray’s blog, “My Life in Food,” gets more than 30,000 hits a month from across the world — Australia to the Philippines, and from Canada to the UK. It’s admittedly hard work: MacGray’s cooking and blogging schedule revolves around natural light for photos and nap schedules of her two youngest children.

But she makes it fun. She pours a glass of wine, turns on music, and relaxes as she chops and sautés. Then she writes, talking to her computer as if it’s a friend.

She was inspired to blog when she read a chronicle of a week of cooking. “I found myself wanting to cook everything she

Life in Food and Words had mentioned,” MacGray says, even cranberry-bean soup. “I thought about the power of words – being able to tell somebody what it’s going to taste like, what you’re going to encounter.”

Through her blog, MacGray does just that. She captivates readers with funny and honest stories, and describes spinach berry smoothies, chickpea tacos and chocolate cobblers with such relish that even non-cooks will want to hustle to the kitchen.

She has a soft spot for stews and soups, but her all-time favorite is roasting a chicken: it takes about five minutes to get everything together, and then in 10 minutes, when the lemons, garlic and thyme start heating up, “the smell is insane.”

Kind of like her lime-coconut-macadamia nut cookies — crisp edges, soft middles, with a tart-sweet flavor and tropical flair. Coconut-Lime Macadamia Nut Cookies adapted from “Our Best Bites” / makes 16 cookies 2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 12 tbsp. (1 1/2 sticks) butter, softened 3/4 c. brown sugar, packed 3/4 c. granulated sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 c. sweetened shredded coconut 1 c. macadamia nuts, roughly chopped 2 tbsp. lime zest Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Either by hand or using an electric mixer with a paddle attachment, cream the softened butter and sugars together for 2 minutes. With the machine running, add eggs one at a time until combined, then add vanilla. Turn the machine off. Add flour, salt and baking soda and mix on low just until combined. Turn the machine off again, then add lime zest, nuts, coconut and white chocolate chips. Mix on low until just combined.

Scoop cookie dough into balls about the size of a golf ball onto a baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment paper. Bake until cookies are set and slightly browned around the outer edges, yet still soft and puffy in the centers, and appear slightly underbaked, about 12-14 minutes (all ovens are different so keep an eye on them! Mine took exactly 13 minutes.)

Cool cookies on cookie sheets for a few minutes and then transfer them to a cooling rack or cool granite countertop until set. *You can make this cookie dough in advance and store in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to three days before baking. Just add a minute to the total baking time. You can also freeze it. Once you have made your dough, shape it into golf ball-sized portions and line them up next to each other in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag. Store in the freezer until ready to bake. They can go into the oven frozen, but you’ll need to add about 5-6 minutes to the total baking time.

Filling gardens with flavor Jill Waldman moved to her “third-of-an-acre suburban lot” in Steamboat Springs with the aim of filling up the dirt with plants she could use.

A friend brought potted herbs and Waldman planted them, then waited to see what would happen. The herbs flourished.

“I can run out in the backyard and pick some fresh herbs for dinner,” she says. At summer’s end, she dries the herbs to use all winter and pass along as gifts.

Herbs can grow anywhere: the cracks in rock walls or flagstone walkways, the pockets of hanging fabric shoe organizers, wooden shipping pallets, and even old Crocs or cowboy boots.

“You can put seeds in little cracks and crooks and crannies, and get them to grow,” says Kristen Pappas, certified nursery professional and co-owner of Little Shop of Growers.

The trick in Steamboat, Pappas says, is to create good soil and protect plants from cold. If herbs are outside, soil should be fluffed with peat moss for better drainage and mixed with compost to improve nutrients. If frost is expected, herbs should be covered – or if the garden is portable, moved inside.

“Container gardening is huge here,” Pappas says. “(You can) move the container in and out depending on weather so

you don’t lose crops.”

Susan Larson’s introduction to gardening was planting a wagon wheel herb garden with her mother in Maine. They placed the wheel on the ground and filled each section with a different herb.

Larson now tends expansive gardens at her home just outside Steamboat. Herbs border her vegetable garden and are decorative – and tasty – additions to her flowerbeds. Her gardens are featured in this summer’s Strings in the Mountain Kitchen and Garden Tour.

“If you don’t have your green thumb yet, (herbs are) a good way to start growing because they’re very forgiving,” Larson says. “They’ll stick with you even if you forget to water them.”

A good herb to try is chives, which “are tough and easy, and they’re back with a vengeance every year,” Larson says.

To use, simply snip some off and sprinkle on scrambled eggs, potatoes and soups.

Other herbs that can grow well in Steamboat are mint, tarragon, thyme, oregano, parsley, lavender and basil.

It doesn’t take long for herbs to start pleasing the senses.

“When I walk through my garden, I always rub my hands against lemon thyme,” Waldman says. “It’s an awesome scent.”

Wagon wheel herb gardens combine a classic Western flair with fragrant flavors.

To purchase a wagon wheel, auctioneer Cookie Lockhart recommends scouring auction houses and antique stores. Even then, finding one can take time. “It isn’t like a store can call and order more,” she says. Expect to pay $200 and up for a buggy or wagon wheel.

For planting in a wheel, choose herbs that require similar amounts of water and sunlight.

Herbs like oregano, thyme, rosemary, lavender and marjoram like it dry, says Lisa Godbolt of Windemere Landscape & Garden Center.

Combine them with nasturtiums, lemon gem or tangerine gem marigolds to add color to the wheel.

Situate the wagon wheel in sun or shade, depending on how the herbs you choose grow best, says Susannah Lusk, owner/grower of Hilton Gulch Herbs. Herbs that can tolerate partial shade include parsley, chives, basil, mint and lemon balm — these would be good to plant with the pansies.

Beware of mint, Godbolt cautions, as it is an aggressive plant that can easily overtake other herbs in close proximity. Basil, parsley and rosemary, while wonderfully flavorful, will likely only last one season in Steamboat’s high-altitude climate, she says.

Assuming you’d like the wheel’s spokes to remain visible for at least part of the summer, select herbs that remain low to the ground. Filling the space between each spoke with tiny plants in spring is tempting, but be sure to leave room for them to grow. The wheel will fill in nicely.

Keep an eye on the weather and if a hard frost is expected, cover the wagon wheel with a sheet or frost-protector. With a little work, you’ll have a beautiful and delicious herb garden.

Then it’s time to cook. “Try it until you find what you like,” Lusk says. “Keep experimenting.

Maybe that flavor doesn’t go well with that food.

(Eventually) the eyes widen and the eyebrows go up and you say, ‘Hey, I like that.’”n

Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Simply stated, “aerobic” means with oxygen, and “anaerobic” means without oxygen.

By training aerobically, you are able to maintain an activity for longer periods of time and control your breath while your body is using the oxygen to convert carbohydrates into energy.

Anaerobic activity is a quick burst of energy that makes you breathe hard and that can only be maintained for a few minutes. Due to the lack of oxygen, your body draws on stores called ATP for energy. The byproduct of this ATP is lactic acid, which prevents you from continuing the exertion at its highest level. It’s that nasty feeling you get when you feel like you’ve pushed yourself to the limit. If you don’t have the ability to test these specifics in your blood, you use your heart rate levels to monitor these two methods.

Long summer days make us eager to be outdoors. Whether you’re training for one of our many physically demanding events like the Steamboat Marathon, Triathlon, Tour de Steamboat, Run Rabbit Run or the Town Challenge, you can achieve optimal conditioning with the help of these tips.

This is an important starting point. After a long winter, our bodies have become accustomed to certain activities, often skiing/snowboarding. Allow yourself a couple weeks within each of these steps for the best results.

Phase 1 Build your base

Winter activities generally lean more toward anaerobic.

Regardless of your regimen, building a strong aerobic base is key to success. This allows you to recover quicker, keep your heart rate lower and be more efficient.

Quick Tips:

Keep your heart rate low and build into longer periods of activity while keeping your intensity low. Target heart rate (HR) should be A1 Zone. Ideal length is 1-2 hours of slow, easy activity.

Phase 2 Incorporate power

Begin to increase the level of difficulty. At first, keep the time of higher intensity short, and then as you build tolerance, you can increase the duration. If you’re on a bike, increase the resistance or include more climbs in your ride. If you’re running or hiking, increase your speed and climbs.

Quick Tips:

Continuing your aerobic blocks, implement two harder sessions a week with increased intensity. Here your target heart rate should be A2, with short periods at the higher end of A2. These spurts start at 30 seconds and build to 1-3 minutes.

Intervals are a perfect example of this training method.

Important: Continue with at least one slow, easy activity per week. This allows for recovery as well as a continuation of your training base.

Phase 3 Train for tolerance, endurance

Importance of Recovery In our quest for being strong and healthy, we often neglect the important element of rest. Every elite athlete knows you cannot underestimate its importance. Without this time, your body is never able to rebuild or regenerate. The term “recovery” includes two different and equally important phases.

First is simple recovery, which includes, sleep, rest and zero to little activity. Second is active recovery, which includes light activity that helps to flush toxins out of the body.

This recovery includes light, easy exercise or activity, which increases blood flow. Don’t skimp on either, they are a key to success.

Start to train your body to tolerate harder, longer activity.

This step is intermixed with the previous two steps, allowing your body to recover and continue to build power. These hard sessions should be once/twice a week. Important: Within this phase, allow yourself an easier week every twothree weeks of training.

Quick Tips:

Challenge yourself to go for a harder session for a longer period of time. Here your target heart rate is your A2 zone. These sessions are ideally at least 30 minutes. A perfect example would be to run uphill, ride your bike up Emerald Mountain, or go for an intense swim. After these sessions, allow yourself time to cool down and recover with an easy jog, spin or swim for at least 20 minutes.

Phase 4 Sport Specific

Finally, if you’re training for a specific event or distance, start to include these exact parameters. If your goal is to run a marathon, the last thing you want to do is jump from running 5 miles to 26.2 miles.

Work toward your desired distance time. This is important so you don’t shock your system. Make a plan and stick to it.

Remember, this is a general idea for summer training. Whether your goal is to compete or simply whip yourself into shape, these guidelines will help you make healthy improvements.

Most importantly, check with your physician to make sure you are ready for these activities. n

Qigong cultivates healing energy Life pulls at us from many directions. Family, work, finances, illness, loss and even joy can put us on a stressfueled, emotional teeter-totter. Exercise and healthy eating help, but sometimes we need to re-center our minds and spirits to do the things we know are good for us.

Many people are finding renewed clarity through Qigong, a health maintenance practice that aligns breath and movement to cultivate healing energy or “chi.”

“When you really understand Qigong and start to practice it, it’s empowering,” says Cheri Trousil, who began learning Qigong four years ago while caring for her terminally ill mother.

Grounded in ancient China, Qigong is the foundation of martial arts and health exercises such as T’ai Chi Ch’uan.

Qigong can take a variety of forms but generally helps tame “monkey minds” (minds that jump from thought to thought like a monkey jumps between trees) by channeling awareness and breath toward chi. This clears stagnant energy, which can

manifest into stress and disease.

“It’s helped slow me down on the inside so I can multi-task with focus rather than chaos,” Trousil says. “That’s been a great reward for me.”

With time and regular practice, Qigong students become more sensitive to their own energy balance and learn how to protect it from negative influences.

“It’s about recognizing our energetic boundaries as being permeable and taking in what we want and leaving what we don’t,” explains Sarah Braat, who teaches Qigong at the Yoga Center of Steamboat and through her business, Sage Healing Arts.

Daily Qigong practice can improve pain, sleep, stamina and efficiency in our daily lives. It grounds us so we can take advantage of the present and catch life’s curve balls without falling, she says.

“Qigong is great for helping us see the things that don’t serve us so we can break out of those patterns and habits.” Trousil says.

Family Camping As we drive up Rabbit Ears Pass, I look out the window at the green valley below and feel adventure: that thrill of hiking into the wild, everything you need on your back, not seeing a computer screen or your own face for days.

Then someone cries, and I turn: our 1-year-old frantically searches for her pacifier, and our 3-year-old pleads for a treat.

And I remember. We aren’t backpacking. We are camping for one night with kids. Our car is crammed with so much stuff, I can’t see the dog. As if on cue, he joins in, howling.

My husband, worried about mosquitoes, didn’t want to come. But I insisted, hungry to sleep outside after our threeyear hiatus brought on by pregnancies and cranky babies. The growing chorus of cries makes me wonder if it will be worth it.

We pull into Dumont Lake Campground. I’m secretly relieved to find it’s full – now we have an excuse to go home and watch a movie. But we spent so much time packing, and people camp with kids all the time, right? So we drive onward.

And find it. A perfect campsite on U.S. Forest Service land: million-dollar views of Rabbit Ears, flat ground, and no one nearby to hear the inevitable whining of children.

We set up our tents and I practically skip around the site.

The girls play in a large puddle and I smile at my husband.

“Aren’t you glad we came?” I ask, but he’s caught in a dark cloud of mosquitoes. We spray everyone with natural, kid-friendly repellant, which doesn’t work, then pull out unadulterated Deet.

The Unvarnished Truth The tents are finally in place and I start thinking about happy hour when I see the girls drinking. Only I haven’t given them water. I watch long enough to see the youngest scoop up brown puddle water and slurp it down, smacking her lips and reaching for more.

“No!” I shout, throwing both girls into a tent and watching for signs of giardia. Then, like magic, the girls discover the air mattresses. They jump for hours, safe from mosquitoes and nasty puddles, stopping only for a dinner of hot dogs and couscous.

Fueled by this success, we set off for the Ears, swatting mosquitoes with every step. We somehow make it to the top of the four-wheeler road, one kid on each back. We look over the other side, washed in golden light from the setting sun. My husband takes my hand.

Then, to the rhythm of the baby’s cries, we hike down into pink air. Even if I end up with West Nile, the views might just be worth it.

Back at camp, we get ready for bed. But the thing is, no one wants to sleep.

“Aren’t you glad we came?” my husband asks around 3 a.m. I have no answer.

By sunrise, we’re enjoying a hot meal at a local restaurant and re-telling our camping stories, which already sound better. Then we go home, take baths and sleep, dreaming of our next adventure. n

Our snares were set when we awoke at midnight on Jan. 28 – a transmitter was signaling that a tiger had been caught. Since it was too cold (-15F) to wait until dawn — her paws could freeze while in our snare — we would have to immobilize her immediately. After a short approach, we left the safety of the truck and, while I held a spotlight that blinded the tiger to our presence, John Goodrich, field director of the Siberian Tiger Project, fired darts.

We were here, standing in the cold of a Siberian night, as part of a joint American-Russian effort to save the last of the Siberian tigers. This female represented one of only approximately 400 individuals that remain in the Russian Far East. If this was our target animal, she was a problem – a female that had been roaming local villages for two winters, eating dogs tied up outside at night. Why was she coming into these places, causing considerable consternation among the inhabitants, when most tigers are able to make an “honest” living in the forest on deer and wild boar populations? We hoped getting our hands on her would provide answers.

Her head slowly lowered as the drugs took their effect, and in 10 minutes, we learned that indeed she was our culprit – an old female with teeth in terrible condition. Were her broken teeth preventing her from killing natural prey? In the frigid cold, we debated what to do. Under different circumstances, we might have translocated her, or perhaps even brought her into captivity. But from snow-tracking, we were armed with another fact — she had a cub out there, about 3 months old, awaiting her return. To move or remove her would ensure the end of her cub.

There was little we could do but put a radio-collar on her and release her. Our plan would be to follow her closely, scaring her away from farms and settlements whenever possible. Hopefully, she and her cub would survive the winter.

In talking with local people, we learned more. They told of the deep snows of the previous winter, when stranded deer were tracked down and nearly eradicated by hunters. The problem, it appeared, was not just an old tigress with failing teeth – there was nothing left to prey upon in the forest. While it is easy to blame the local people, their condition is also critical – unemployment rates in these small forest villages often reach 50%. How do we meet the needs of local people and ensure a future for the world’s tigers? That is the question conservationists are facing across tiger range in Asia. Answers vary in each country, but in Russia we are working with local hunting groups to improve management of game species so that both hunters and tigers will benefit.

In the meantime, we know this female survived the winter, and we are hopeful her cub is still out there, carrying on, and staying away from villages. n

The Steamboat Connection

While Siberia and Steamboat Springs are literally a world apart, they share a common interest in preserving endangered species. Recognizing the need for worldwide support of these efforts, Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation, a Routt Countybased nonprofit organization dedicated to rehabilitating wild animals, is helping to raise awareness of the tigers’ plight and funding for the Siberian Tiger Project by sponsoring a weekend of special events.

Across the Fifth Street bridge in Old Town Steamboat Springs is the historic Brooklyn neighborhood. Close to downtown but hardly recognizable from its earlier days, Brooklyn was Steamboat’s very own notorious “red light district.”

A consumptive and alcoholic artist living in the small hamlet dubbed the neighborhood “Brooklyn,” reported historian/author John R. Burroughs. The moniker’s roots can probably be traced to the fact that most residents were working class people and immigrants as well. Many of the businesses were saloons, much like the artist’s home in Brooklyn, N.Y. The neighborhood of Brooklyn was originally part of the Woolery homestead, which was subdivided into building lots as the town of Steamboat started to grow. After the news that the Moffat Railroad would be building through town and tracks would be laid on the south side of the river, a boom in construction took place especially in Brooklyn. Private homes as well as businesses were built, including a law office, barbershop, livery stable, lime kiln, tobacco shops and cafés. However the businesses that made it notorious were the saloons and bawdy houses.

The town of Steamboat was originally organized as a “dry” community, which meant that no alcohol could be sold in the town proper. Brooklyn, however, was across the river and just outside of the restrictive zoning. Businesses there flourished, since not everyone was as temperance-minded as Steamboat’s founders.

“This red light district provided a recreational outlet for railroad workers and for cowboys driving cattle to and from Wolcott and other areas,” notes an application for the historic preservation of one of the homes in the area. “Although there were those folks who ran a consistent campaign to close down the saloons, for the most part the arrangement supported the best of both worlds. Peace and sobriety reigned in Steamboat Springs while there remained in close proximity, a way and a means for those who wished to let loose.”

The saloons in Brooklyn offered a wide array of entertainment, from live music to boxing matches and, of course, whiskey, gambling and female companionship. Except for being closed on Sundays, the saloons didn’t adhere to many rules of operation; day or night a patron could get a drink or find a game of cards. The bawdy houses or brothels also catered to anyone, anytime. There were the small shacks with their obvious redlight lanterns that hung by the women’s doors,

Let Steamboat do the entertaining while you enjoy your special day... advertising their availability. There were also fancier “rooming house” brothels that were associated with the saloons.

A number of colorful characters lived and worked in Brooklyn during its heyday. One saloon owner, Anton Kline, was considered the “good guy” in Brooklyn because he didn’t allow women or children in his saloon. Gus Durbin, another saloon proprietor, had a considerable sense of humor and named one of his saloons The Carrie Nation after the fiery temperance leader who was known for hatcheting her way through saloons.

Ollie Patterson and Hazel McGuire owned the two leading brothels, aka “boarding houses for girls.” Patterson was known for advertising her latest roomers by parading them through town in their best clothing in order to drum up business, while McGuire was constantly enmeshed in public scandals.

There were others like Andy Black, a Texan cowboy/gambler who supposedly brought McGuire to Steamboat. Black liked to cause a stir with the respectable people of Steamboat by escorting various women who worked for McGuire as his “wife” at rodeo events. And then there was the entrepreneurial barkeep Oscar Walker, who took a wagonload of booze and a few ‘Brooklyn girls’ into the Routt National Forest during a large sheep roundup to try to make his fortune; ultimately he was run off by the district forest ranger.

Of course, no saloon district would be complete without outlaws and some form of a shootout. Butch Cassidy and his gang supposedly frequented the Brooklyn saloons and bawdy houses, but they avoided getting into any trouble with the law while they visited. Brooklyn had a few stories of violence.

One such incident occurred over a game of cards in Durbin’s saloon and ended with one man shooting both his opponent and himself, accidentally.

Brooklyn’s demise finally came about on Jan. 1, 1916, when Colorado passed a law prohibiting alcohol, making the entire state “dry.” This ended the Wild West era for the red light districts, including Brooklyn. Eventually its notoriety, as well as its inhabitants, slipped into obscurity. n

Jackie Kuusinen’s dreams come true. Her dreams are of granite and sandstone, rock faces reaching into the sky, and hanging out on tiny ledges high above horizontal ground.

Her dreams are also her job.

Kuusinen is a climber. A good climber. Her imagination was first captured by the thought of climbing as a middle school student here in Steamboat Springs. It was at school, on an artificial climbing wall, that she first tied into a harness, grabbed a hold, and stepped up onto the wall. She began thinking of bigger climbs, steeper cliffs, and what might be next.

All through high school and college, as she earned her master’s degree in library science, Kuusinen found her next climbing goals and worked hard at achieving them. As each goal was met, others were set. This is climbing at its core.

Internships, guiding professionally, earning her single-pitch accreditation from the American Mountain Guides Association, and assisting lead instructors at Colorado Mountain College all led to her current job of teaching and leading rock climbing courses back home at CMC. (As if that weren’t enough, Kuusinen is also the reference librarian at Bud Werner Memorial Library.)

“Working as a climbing instructor for CMC is a dream come true. We have incredible students and it’s the best job in the world,” says Kuusinen. The excitement in her voice is contagious. It is no wonder her students are equally excited to learn.

Teaching at CMC, while a dream come true, doesn’t mean Kuusinen has stopped setting goals for herself.

This summer she plans to earn full rock-guide certification from the AMGA. She also has her sites on climbing the Diamond, Longs Peak’s massive east face.

Worthy and powerful dreams.

Everything has changed and nothing has changed since Dan Piano dipped a kayak paddle blade into wild water for the first time. Piano was in grade school.

What has changed over the years is Piano’s exceptional gain of river experience, knowledge and kayaking skill. The one thing that has stayed the same is his passion for the sport he immediately fell in love with as a boy.

Piano, now 31, doesn’t emphasize the accolades he has earned via kayaking. “To be honest, I focus on having fun with my friends, in our boats, on a river,” he says. “That’s what’s important.”

Piano’s focus led him to Gore Canyon on the Colorado River last spring. A very tough section of river, even during an average runoff. Piano and his friends kayaked it at an incredible heart-pounding 8,250 cubic feet/second. Nearly eight times bigger than an average runoff and an all-time record water flow.

“It just takes the mental ability to rationalize it. You break the river down one rapid at a time. Run it. Get out and scout the next one. Do it slowly. If we had thought about running the entire canyon as a whole, it wouldn’t have been possible,” he says.

Piano’s passion for kayaking doesn’t stop at just having fun with his buddies. He teaches Swiftwater Rescue with Down Stream Edge. He also teaches kayaking skills at the local community college.

“I love running class 5 rapids but just as much I love teaching people how to be good people on the water and teaching them good river skills. Adversity Only Makes Her Stronger Tammy Jacques

Tammy Jaques is tiny. At 5’2 and 98 pounds, she only gets smaller and smaller as she opens a gap, pedals away from the main field in a bike race and slowly disappears off the front to another podium finish.

It hasn’t always been this way. For about 11 years, Jacques didn’t train, ride, ski, or do much of anything as she battled back from a serious crash she suffered as a professional mountain biker.

She was riding fast, testing a new bike, when the front fork failed, jamming the front wheel, and physics took care of the rest. As a consequence of her injuries, serious illness resulted making her recovery arduous and slow.

With improving health, Jacques, her husband and their two children moved to Steamboat Springs in 2008. She took up Nordic skiing. That felt good, so in 2009 she thought it would be fun to race mountain bikes again in the local town challenge.

In 2010 she won the competitive women’s division in theTown Challenge. In 2011, she won the local women’s road bike series, tied for first in the Town Challenge, placed fifth at the Leadville 100, finished second for elite women in the Steamboat Triathlon (an Olympic distance triathlon and Jacques’ first ever).

Let’s just say Jacques is feeling good these days.

“The racing is fun and I enjoy the camaraderie and all the friendships I’ve made, but I’m a full-time mom. I work full-time, training and racing aren’t my focus anymore.

The time I share with my kids and husband are my priority,” says Jacques.

Accidents happen, times change, priorities shift — for Jacques, professional racing was once a measure of success. Now her success is measured in family time.

Oh, but get used to the idea of a smaller Jacques – that’s her riding you off her rear wheel. She’s in a hurry to get back to her kids.

Jacques is also a spokesperson/ambassador for the National Pancreatic Association.

Steamboat Springs’ unusually long and snowy winters are ideal training conditions for skiers and riders. Not so much if your sport happens to be swimming.

And yet the newest Olympian to qualify for his own flag in the Howelsen Hill lodge is Blake Worsley, whose sport is the 200-meter freestyle event in swimming. The 24-year-old local man, who has dual U.S./Canadian citizenship, made the Canadian Olympic swim team on the first day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials, held in Montreal March 27 – April 1. In an exciting finish, Worsley edged out Chad Bobrosky by less than a ½ second. “ I was so glad to get my best finish on the first day,” Worsley says.

“It was a close race, but he put it out to the end and he got it!” says his mom, Patti, who doubled as his coach while he was growing up. Worsley competed for Steamboat’s Team Lightning before going on to college at the University of Denver.

Blake smiles when he talks about swimming in the outdoor lap pool at the Old Town Hot Springs throughout the winter. “Yeah, it gets a little bit tough,” he says.

The hot springs pool has 25-yard laps, vs. a regulation Olympic pool, where the laps are 50 meters. With Worsley’s lanky 6’6” frame, the shallow end of the Steamboat pool could pose challenges, too, although his efficient stroke minimizes that concern.

A former pitcher for the Steamboat Springs High School Sailors, Worsley also played hockey while growing up. But his Olympic dreams center around swimming. He’s counting the days until the London Games begin on Friday, July 27. ke

Let The Pickin’ Begin Old Town P i c k e rs

Four years, nine years, twelve years, forever. That’s how long the members of Old Town Pickers have lived in Steamboat Springs, although the acoustic bluegrass quartet has only been playing together for a year. They call themselves a family already, and their chemistry is electric.

Guitarist Jay Roemer and upright bassist Denton Turner have been playing together since Turner moved here four years ago; they started on Turner’s deep-south-looking lawn behind the Old Town Pub. There are chickens in a coop, three small gardens, an old white school bus and logs to sit on; what better place for a bluegrass band to be born?

It was there that mandolinist Eric Baker met the boys at a July Fourth party in 2010, and the pickin’ began. Eight months later when their original banjo player left town, the band reached out to Yampa Valley native Von Wilson, and everything clicked for the group — Jason Edinburg 60 | O N L INE AT WWW. Old Town Pickers was born.

The band is staying busy this summer; you can find them at a plethora of local venues including Sweetwater Grill, sunset happy hour atop the gondola, The Roadhouse, Music on the Green with Strings at the Botanic Park, Fourth of July Parade and headlining Friday night at Wes Fest. They also have plans to travel far and wide for gigs, from the bluegrass festivals in Palisade to Telluride, as well as to a July show in Turner’s native North Carolina.

Their high energy is what keeps them going, despite their no-drums traditional format. “We’re not JamGrass,” Baker explains. “Colorado has a reputation for its jammin’ bluegrass. But we stick to the traditional ensemble and have high energy anyway.”

“It’s all about supporting local live music and bringing the community together for us,” Turner adds. The band just loves to share their grooves, and you can feel that from the way they pluck their strings.

From Juilliard to Rustic Cabins L i n da K e n t

It is unquestionably joy and pride in Linda Kent’s voice when she talks about the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp’s summer programming. Despite having to leave her position at Juilliard for eight rugged weeks in the camp’s rustic cabins, she does it for the benefits it brings her students.

“Why I do this,” she explains, “is because I can truly see what the time out here gives to the students – confidence and a unique experience.”

For the past decade, along with a full schedule of choreography and teaching in New York, Kent has spent each year preparing for summers in Steamboat, recruiting far and wide across the country to enlist top-notch instructors for the program’s 200 students ages 10 to 22. From Janet Taisey Craft’s popular aerial dance workshops to Thang Dao’s choreography that has won him two Princess Grace Awards, Kent’s drive for success packs in the best of the best for the summer camp.

Kent started her career in dance in 1969, working for two dance companies before taking on a teaching role at Juilliard in 1984. With nearly four decades of experience under her belt, she brings a wealth of knowledge to Perry-Mansfield.

With programming that continues to spark innovation every season in Steamboat, Kent’s lineup promises nothing short of what her supporters have come to expect. A highlight is the first-ever collaboration with Strings Music Festival for one of the 25th anniversary “Heritage Concerts” in July. In addition, the camp’s New Works Festival, in its 15th year of professional mentoring, takes place in early June, and is followed by a talent-rich series of events that always packs in crowds from far and wide.

“What Steamboat and Perry-Mansfield have to offer just can’t be matched,” she says. Neither can Kent’s additions to both.

Kiwi-SteamboatS t u art Connections Ha n d l off The vortex of small-town community theater drew Stuart Handloff into Steamboat Springs 40 years ago. He moved from Delaware and connected with the old Cameo Playhouse above the Old Town Pub. As with most locals, Handloff stayed here because of Steamboat’s quality of life and outdoor activities, but the theater has always been his anchor.

Handloff started teaching theater at Steamboat Springs High School in 1999, and then at Colorado Mountain College in 2008 after earning his master’s degree from the New Zealand National Drama School. In addition to teaching, he is the catalyst behind a unique addition to the area – PikNik Theater Festival, which he started in 2005 as a way to join two communities that are half a world apart. PikNik brings professional Kiwi actors to work alongside locals in the annual three-week summer festival.

New Zealand’s similarities to Steamboat are what attracted Handloff originally. He describes the Kiwi mentality as relaxed, laid-back and on “island time.” He says the theater festival is “a way of looking at Steamboat through another lens: ourselves reflected in another culture. What we value here has international worth.”

What’s new this summer is the addition of music; most of the Kiwi actors have a strong musical background that will be infused into both shows. The principal work is Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” and the second piece was created by New Zealand actors and adapted by local performers. The result will be an original, creative play for all ages.

Both plays will open Friday, July 6, and continue for three weeks on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at the Yampa River Botanic Garden’s Community Park.

Handloff’s dream is to model Steamboat’s PikNik Theater after Crede Repertory Theater in southwestern Colorado. It has attracted statewide attention and draws audiences from throughout the country. “If Crede can do it,” Handloff urges, “so can Steamboat.”

Handloff’s community-first attitude is what makes PikNik Theater special.

For a self-described “Zero Hero,” Andy Kennedy racks up impressive numbers. That includes diverting 55,000 pounds of trash, collected at 50 community events, from the dump.

The entrepreneur, photographer, calligrapher, writer and holistic teacher/healer has a passion for sustainable living and joined the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council board. Kennedy then stepped up to manage the growing Zero Waste program at community events. Along with hundreds of volunteers, “Zero Heroes,” she helped divert 97% of the waste to recycling and compost that would otherwise have gone into the landfill.

“It takes an army to do Zero Waste,” Kennedy says, noting that the effort also takes sponsorship dollars.

Kennedy says education makes the biggest impact on people’s behavior. Local schools have initiated the program, and the kids influence their parents.

“Seeing us at events and in schools makes people think about what they can do to reduce and reuse,” Kennedy says.

This summer, bike and running events, concerts, farmers’ markets and business socials will use the Zero Waste service. “Our biggest challenge is the Fourth of July parade because we don’t have enough volunteers, bins, or funding,” she says.

Kennedy is passing the Zero Waste “scepter” to her intern, but says she will always be involved. She and her husband, Craig, have a travel-consulting business for people with disabilities and have published two books on the subject. She also teaches website design, photography and personal growth workshops to sustain her passions. Always doing “a million things at once,” Kennedy’s goal is simple: “I want to sustain a happy, healthy life and lifestyle.”

A light shines brightly in west Steamboat Springs that is helping others shine, too. Buck and Tara Chavarria are beacons for kids through Sk8 Church, a nonprofit organization that reaches out to youth.

Their own dark struggles were a catalyst for change, the couple says, and their faith helped them see the light to help others. While playing with his son at a skate park, Buck saw other kids who needed a father figure. He recognized the opportunity to teach his son to meet that need. Sk8 Church became the common ground to make a connection. While it does have an awesome indoor skate park, many kids there don’t skateboard. The “church” aspect brings together people of every faith for a common cause.

“It’s for anyone who wants to fit in and find community,” Tara says. “It’s a safe place where you can lay down other identities and just hang out, do homework, or online school.”

Investing in people is their purpose, Buck says. “The kids have an overall sense of being welcome, loved. Here we are — an open family you can be part of it and plug in, or be disconnected.”

To connect, everyone pitches in with cooking, cleaning and maintaining the space. Everything at Sk8 Church – lumber for the park, game tables, computers, media center with projection screen, kitchen and food – comes from generous donations and volunteers.

“This place has changed a ton of kids’ lives and is a light in this community – like a lighthouse,” Buck beams. “There’s room for others to shine with us.”

Fourth-Generation Rancher Tackles Ag Challenges T odd Ha g e n b u c h

As a rancher and Routt County’s new agricultural extension agent, Todd Hagenbuch has his hands full.

Fortunately, he has both education and heritage on his side.

Though he grew up in Denver, Hagenbuch spent the vacations of his youth on his grandparents’ Green Creek Ranch, which they purchased in the 1940s. Soon after earning his degree from CSU in farm and ranch management, Hagenbuch returned to work at the South Routt ranch, where today, hereford-angus cattle and quarter horses are raised.

In 1898, Hagenbuch’s great-grandparents, Emile and Percide Gay, emigrants from Switzerland, settled in Pleasant Valley, so named in 1886 by Mrs. Henry C. Monson when she viewed the valley from Yellow Jacket Pass. Hagenbuch’s grandmother, Elaine Gay, is legendary in Northwest Colorado for her diplomatic advocacy of agriculture in the face of encroaching development.

As was true for the Gays, the challenges today for Routt County agriculture center on the question: given the rapid land development in the valley, is agriculture economically sustainable? Despite the vigor and magnitude of that challenge, Hagenbuch is encouraged. The community has made strong statements recently in support of large working landscapes, he explains. “Our Routt County Master Plan, Vision 2020 and Vision 2030 demonstrate that this community values agriculture and open space.”

Prior to becoming CSU’s extension agent for Routt County, Hagenbuch worked for three years as Sen. Michael Bennet’s (D-Colo) Northwest Colorado community liaison. With his agricultural background and ranching passions, Hagenbuch is a natural fit for his new role, which was vacated last fall by C.J. Mucklow, who held the post for 22 years.

Along with encouraging awareness of the value of local food products and the economic viability of agriculture in the region, Hagenbuch is passionate about keeping Routt County youth in ranching. He is now in a position to help drive all of those conversations.

Building Community One Chapter at a Time Wanda

Open any chapter of Wanda Gumprecht Redmond’s life story and you will want to read the whole book. Redmond’s family has been a part of the South Routt County landscape for more than 100 years and Redmond, herself, has created a legacy that stretches far beyond the south valley.

As a rancher, farmer and educator, Redmond has traveled from her Colorado roots to learn and teach as far away as California, Washington, D.C., and Japan. But her involvement with local nonprofits has been her quiet bequest.

Chairing the Community Agriculture Alliance during its formative years, being a charter member of Routt County Purchase of Development Rights and acting as a steward for Historic Routt County are highlights of her volunteer efforts. Her longtime involvement with those organizations, plus the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, 4-H and others earned her the prestigious Hazie Werner Award for Excellence in 2005.

“It’s important to get involved in constructive community groups,” Redmond says. “I’ve tried to be a good representative. I’m able to contribute in a way that gives me satisfaction rather than recognition.”

Still, working the ranch and riding four-yearold horses at age 83, Redmond says she’s most proud of her good health and perspective. “I still maintain an interest in everything.”

She and her husband, Jack, live in the home near Yampa where Jack was born. One son, John, continues the heritage of Redmond’s family and will one day will take over the ranch, which is on the Colorado Register of Historic Places.

If you find your way to the end of Redmond’s county road, she’ll happily share another chapter.

In a mountain town where – let’s face it – most people would rather be outdoors than at work, having a great office environment is especially prized.

From the west end of town, where Excel Gymnastics anchors the Riverfront Industrial Park, to the east side, where Millennium Bank and Vertical Arts offer opportunities for employees to relax and unwind, Steamboat’s commercial architectural portfolio is impressive.

Vertical Arts Sleek, hip, fun and award-winning, Vertical Arts is an office in transition, evolving along with the diverse personnel who inhabit it.

The loft-like environment utilizes a material palette of raw steel, resin panels and bamboo cabinets.

The space includes a hidden room, steel ladders and a strategically placed ping pong table, where Monday morning staff meetings are held. These are just a few of the cool design touches that make this a creative environment for 11 employees. “We work hard, and we put in some long hours,” says Vertical Arts founding principal Brandt Vanderbosch, “so we wanted to create a space that inspires and makes our time here more enjoyable. We also wanted a space that serves as an example of our work for clients to check out. And where we could continue to expand and grow.”

Centered around a raw steel and glass staircase that glows at night, the office is staffed by people who do everything from landscape to interior design, from architecture to furniture design, for clients all over the country.

That’s not to say that work doesn’t stop for an occasional ping pong game. “This ping pong table is used daily, actually several times a day,” Vanderbosch says. “We want to promote a healthy lifestyle for our staff.

Centennial Hall

Kevin Bennett had a vision one day when he walked out of the old city hall in the late mid-1990s. Across the street was an old brick garage, and in his mind, he could see it transformed into part of a campus where city offices would reside and function efficiently. “This idea came to me, and all I had to do was convince the people of Steamboat that this was a good idea — and also the family whose house and garage were on the lot,” says Bennett, who was City Council president at the time.

Fifteen years later, Bennett’s vision is reality; the family who lived in the historic home relocated, and Centennial Hall is bustling with employees as it serves as the hub of local government. The old garage, which was actually the original power plant for Steamboat, is preserved and now serves as a large meeting room, offices and the City Café, the campus’s social meeting ground and a great place to grab a quick lunch.

Careful consideration was taken in the design to reflect the past, while not trying to duplicate it, Bennett says. “We used distinctly different building styles on the addition, as we wanted to reflect the old and showcase the new.” The addition includes a greeting gallery, board room and additional offices and meeting spaces, all with state-of-the art technology.

City employee Mary Schuette, whose office is located in what was once the attic of the historic building, says working there is really cool. Pegs on her office wall once served as a place where customers’ electric bills hung until they were paid. “It’s nice to able to work in an office that is part of Steamboat’s history. It has really unique features, like the pegs and an old original light fixture. It’s really neat,” she says.

When Moots factory opened in 2001, it was one of the first live-work buildings, or “warehomes” in Steamboat Springs.

— Amy Decastro A bike-crazed community is a natural fit for one of the world’s top custom cycling companies. So it’s not surprising that Moots’ highperformance, titanium bicycle frames are built in their Steamboat Springs factory.

Moots started out in the back of a little bike shop some 30 years ago, and is now pumping out more than 1,000 handmade bikes every year for riders around the globe. Depending on the client’s wish list, the custom bikes range from $6,000 to $10,000.

Located west of town in a cube-shaped building, this place is a biker’s dream. Walk through the front door and you might think you’ve actually gone to biking heaven, as sky blue walls rise to painted clouds on the third level, where three apartments are located.

A true bike factory, everything on a Moots bike comes out of this place. Starting out as a titanium tube, the bike-to-be journeys through a construct maze of work areas until it is transformed into what is virtually a piece of art. The process takes about six to eight weeks to complete.

Moots employs about 25 people, from welders to designers to a marketing staff that travels around the country in the Moots van.

Amy Decastro, the lone female welder at Moots, says it’s a great place to be. “It’s super fun, and we’re all really close. Everyone here is cycleoriented, we have Friday rides and there’s a ride-to-work program where we earn $1 a day that we donate to charity. Everyone here is committed to their job and I get to use a giant hammer. It’s pretty much the best job ever.”

Millennium Bank

“I’m grateful that I have such beautiful surroundings.”

— Mary Simmins Routt County’s mining and agricultural heritage influenced the design of the new Millennium Bank in Wildhorse Marketplace. “This is the neatest community bank building I’ve ever seen in my 37 years of banking,” says bank president Paul Clavadetscher.

Dry-stack stone walls and solid black metal ceiling struts lend a feel of the local mining culture.

Warm chocolate brown walls, abstract sculpture that may or may not represent a lasso (art is, after all, in the eye of the beholder) and parchment-like light fixtures allude to Routt County’s ranching heritage.

The focal point of the bank is a large textured-glass wall that is interspersed with hand-carved wooden panels, painted to look like metal. Each panel illustrates a familiar scene. The center one features the Yampa River with Mount Werner in the background; pinecones, aspen leaves, aspen trees and a ranch fence are also featured. Individual panels can be swapped out to add variety to the montage.

Designed by Eric Smith and Associates, with Don Brinkman as the lead architect, Millennium opened the doors at its permanent location in July 2010. Kimberly Timmons Interiors designed the interiors, and Holmquist-Lorenz Construction Company built the facility.

Clavadetscher credits Millennium employees Mary Simmins and Joan Ihrig for shaping the vision for the new bank. “It’s really cool to work in a building where people come in and notice it,” Simmins says. “I’m grateful that I have such beautiful surroundings.”

Employees also enjoy a shower, full kitchen and break room, exercise space and lounge.

“We have a staff shower so employees can ride their bikes to work or work out at noon and clean up before coming back to work. We wanted to make this a great place for our employees to work, and of course a great place for our community to bank as well,” Clavadetscher says.

purchased the building in 2010. He added Western accents to the space, which was originally constructed in 1928 as a car dealership.

“Rumor has it that the reason a floor here is elevated is because an old car lift is underneath,” laughs Labor.

One of Labor’s accents is a lifestyle sculpture that greets visitors.

“We have an old chair from the Burgess Creek lift, a rodeo rider’s saddle, a Winter Sports ski bib as well as an old canoe. These are all things that reflect the Steamboat lifestyle,” says Labor.

Ulrich Salzgeber, a broker associate at Buyer’s Resource, says it’s a comfortable place to work. “This is a great environment, it’s real relaxing. And it reflects our personalities, and that’s how we treat our clients.”

Gymnastics When Steamboat Springs’ gymnastics center closed its doors in 2007, local parent Mike Smith opened Excel Gymnastics so his two young children could continue their favorite sport. Today it’s a thriving sports center where as many as 450 gymnasts practice back flips and handsprings throughout the year.

The studio is located in Riverfront Industrial Park along the Yampa River in west Steamboat.

Architect Benjie Amsden designed the colorful complex, which houses live-work units as well as industrial space.

“When I first saw it, I thought, ‘This was meant to be a gym,’” Smith says. “It has a lot of natural light — the fact it had windows was important to me. So many industrial spaces don’t offer that.”

At more than 11,000 square feet, the gym offers plenty of space to jump and spin through the air. A ring tower, trampolines and high bars are all accommodated due to the high ceilings.

“The ring tower alone is 20 feet tall,” Smith says. Excel also offers an obstacle course for the gym’s youngest students, and more than 150 students are enrolled in classes at the adjacent dance studio.

“It’s a fun time here,” says Smith. “And our kids are moving up. We have a junior Olympic training program here and our kids are winning

Eight coaches work at Excel, and Smith says most of them enjoy playing around on the equipment when they’re not coaching. As for Smith himself, a former high school gymnast, he prefers an occasional handstand. “But I can’t do one very long though,” he laughs. “They make my face turn pretty red.”

When baby boomers were growing up, the commercial version of the idyllic life comprised a house in suburbia, a station wagon, two kids and a dog in the yard.

“You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile; you may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife. And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?” wrote the Talking Heads in 1984.

In the 21st century, Steamboat Springs is, indeed, asking itself: How did we get here, when gas is $4/gallon and a house in suburbia costs more than a half-million dollars? Should we build more houses on the hillsides surrounding town? Should we fill in the empty lots (and Ski Time Square) on the mountain? Should we allow more growth on the valley floor? Should everything new happen west of Steamboat?

Local residents had a chance to ponder those questions this spring at workshops intended to help shape revisions to the community master plan. City planner Jason Peasley devised a board game in which groups of four people worked together to plan future growth. Each player was given poker chips of various colors, representing single-family homes, multiple family dwellings and commercial development. The idea was to play your chips on a map of Steamboat Springs in the places you’d like to see growth. If you ran out of one color chip, you could trade with another player for more.

While city planners were open to new ideas from the workshops, the real goal was to get people talking and working together on a vision for Steamboat’s future.

Planning director Tyler Gibbs and Peasley acknowledge that the revisions of the master plan were

necessitated partly as a result of the failure of the proposed Steamboat 700 development in west Steamboat at the polls two years ago.

The question now isn’t what happened then, but what will work going forward?

One proposed answer is called “the new urbanism,” a term defined by author Christopher Leinberger in his book, “The Option of Urbanism.” The phrase may be an unfortunate one in a small town like Steamboat, where “urban” is something residents hoped to leave behind when they came here.

More neutral terminology for this emerging land-use trend is “walkability,” where pedestrians, rather than cars, come first.

Patrick Phillips, CEO for the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C., defines walkable urbanism as an environment where most of a resident’s daily needs are met within a 1/4-1/2 mile radius of their home.

“Cities above all are about people,” Phillips says. “It’s about making their everyday lives better. It’s also a commitment to create a more sustainable world. An urban environment is more energy-efficient. It gets people out of their cars.”

Phillips, who has a second home in Steamboat Springs, points to Old Town as a neighborhood with great potential in terms of walkability. When Howelsen Place (a high-end, mixed-use, residential/ commercial complex) opened at Seventh Street and Lincoln Avenue, “there were suddenly new options for Steamboat,” Phillips says. He cites the public investment in the Core Trail, accessibility to Emerald Mountain and the riverfront as major downtown assets.

and creating public spaces,” says city engineer Janet Hruby.

Leinberger charges most planning departments with failing to facilitate walkability in their zoning restrictions. In many communities, zones are separated by use, with retail/commercial isolated from residential properties. This old-school thinking was driven by the move to suburbia and has changed slowly, Leinberger contends.

Hruby says that’s not the case in Steamboat. “We’re taking steps to get there,” Hruby says. “Our community plan talks about a lot of the elements: walkability, connecting things and creating public space.”

Focus on Yampa Street Corey Kopischke

Last spring council members began consideration of moving the city’s emergency services from Yampa Street in Old Town to west Steamboat, and they decided to ask voters to fund a new public safety campus. If the ballot measure passes this fall, the door to possible revitalization of this riverside street will be open.

“There have been some great ideas and plans for Yampa Street over the last 20 years, but we haven’t figured out how to accomplish them,” Hruby says.

More people began to see possibilities when the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association closed the street for the Yampa River Art Walk, a part of the annual All Arts Festival, which began four years ago. But one limiting factor has been emergency access.

The juxtaposition of ambulances and fire trucks heading out with lights flashing and pedestrians wandering down a road without sidewalks is hair-raising.

The planning department has been meeting with Yampa Street businesses and other shareholders to ponder various ideas, from limiting access to pedestrians only to mimicking Europe’s approach, in which roadways are designed to be closed for events or during certain hours of the day.

“As a business owner, I support commercial revitalization,” says Tim Kirkpatrick, owner of Steamboat Flyfisher on Fifth Street and Yampa Avenue. At the same time, he has concerns about parking, infrastructure and the lack of public restrooms.

The proposed Riverwalk development at Fourth and Yampa, which includes public space and walkways, could potentially anchor the revitalized avenue.

“The riverfront is an amazing amenity. How do we best capture the value of that for the benefit of the property owners, downtown and the community as a whole?” Gibbs wonders.

The Urban Land Institute may help Steamboat to answer that question. Prior to its annual meeting in Denver this fall, it plans to convene a panel locally to examine options for Yampa Street and Old Town.

“Old Town is pretty walkable,” Phillips says.

“It’s easy to navigate on foot; there aren’t a lot of dead ends. The key is for pedestrians to feel safe. Old Town is adaptable to these trends. It’s got such good basic bones.”

“Steamboat needs to keep the middle class option open. It’s part of Steamboat Springs’ charm for a variety of income levels to live so close. People really value the character of the place.”

What does the future hold? Phillips predicts that walkability will be part of the solution, but that it will likely be supplemented with residential development on the edge of town and infill on the mountain.

Dance That’s Worth the Drive Vail International Dance Festival A tantalizing dance festival has grown up not far from Steamboat Springs over the past two decades. You’ll bypass cow towns like Phippsburg, Bond and McCoy en route to performances that regularly grace iconic theaters from New York to Chicago, Moscow and Paris.

But this is still ballet in Vail, so settle in on the lawn (maybe even with a picnic) and absorb the awe-inspiring beauty of some of the world’s most spectacular dancers and cutting-edge choreography.

The dance festival got an auspicious start in 1989 when Vail stood in as the last-minute replacement for a canceled Texas tour stop for Russia’s famous 235-year-old Bolshoi Ballet Academy. The Rockies appealed to the Russians, and the relationship grew into a four-week residency for young ballet dancers. By 1993 the first International Evenings of Dance emerged, with mixed casts of dancers from the world’s most prestigious companies, including the Bolshoi Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, performing together al fresco on the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater stage.

By 1998, notable choreographers began premiering new works at the festival, setting their pieces for dancers ranging from the Atlanta Ballet to the Trey McIntyre Project. Former New York City Ballet star Damian Woetzel took the festival’s reigns in 2006, upping the ante with even more prestigious lineups of visiting companies, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company and a world debut for Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company.

All of this year’s performances take place at the Ford Amphitheater, except for one special rehearsal-style Up Close

evening with New York City Ballet Moves (Tuesday, July 31).

They’ll be performing excerpts of legendary choreographer George Balanchine’s works to Igor Stravinsky’s music at the Vilar Center in Beaver Creek. With fair warning, based on last year’s intimate Up Close performance featuring the men of New York City Ballet, this promises to be an outstanding piece of ballet history (and a sold-out show), but this is a dancer’s dance performance.

Great colorado Bear Stories

By Laura Pritchett Riverbend Publishing, 2012 Soft cover $14.95, 246 pages

Laura Pritchett, author/editor of six books, writes about the West and her home state of Colorado. Her work has received the PEN USA Award, the Colorado Book Award, and the Milkweed National Fiction Prize.

Laura Pritchett admits that when she was asked to write this book, she knew little about bears. By the time she wrote the final chapter, the author came to the clear recognition that “this great state has the great gift of bears — and the deep responsibility of keeping them safe and their habitat wild.”

The stories Pritchett discovered prompt a freshened awareness of the creatures that have roamed the Rockies for thousands of years. Now, having lost 90 percent of their original range, bears are meeting the people who have covered that land with structures.

Meetings between man and bear transport author and reader alike through history. At the Southern Ute Indian Reservation on a Memorial Day weekend, tribal elder Matthew Box explains the sacred Bear Dance, one of North America’s oldest known continuous dancing traditions. The bear’s repeated return to the world each spring speaks to the belief in its spiritual aspects and the cultural teachings that can sustain future generations.

Zebulon Pike’s gift of a pair of grizzly bears to Thomas Jefferson in 1807 became the first to be on public display in the world. In 1834 trapper Osborne Russell wrote of personal encounters with grizzlies and black bears. The “Routt County Sentinel” of Sept. 6, 1901, reported that President Grover Cleveland would soon embark on a hunting expedition in Colorado’s Glen Beulah Park. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt wrote of his Colorado bear hunt.

Pritchett relates the stories that others have shared with her. Standing in the cabin of Enos Mills, she experiences the love of grizzlies felt by the man called by many the “father of Rocky Mountain National Park” With great success, the author passes along what she has received from those who welcomed her into “bear savvy lives.”

Borneman The Colorado Mountain Club Press, Golden 2011 Soft cover $24.95, 176 pages Colorado’s mountains have been the walkways of humans for some 12,000 years, but Americans first found out about North America’s “Snowy Mountains” in 1910 through the words of Zebulon Pike. Now, 100 years later, five members of the Colorado Mountain Club join their predecessor in the desire to ascend the great peaks. What is it that draws humans to the mountaintops?

Ancient peoples discovered the pathways. Spanish soldiers, explorers and adventurers learned the passes from the Utes, then created the first maps of the Spanish empire’s northern limits. Fur trappers followed rivers to their sources. When the land became part of the United States, government explorers Fremont and Gunnison drew more accurate maps. 1858’s gold discoveries in what was then the Kansas Territory boomed into the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, and “modern mountaineering” began.

Men and women began traveling to Colorado for the pleasure of climbing. The Colorado Mountain Club, in 1912, and the federal government, in 1915, initiated a joint history and began an environmental timeline with the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. “Climbing for fun” brought together the politics and philosophy of the 20th century. “Preservation, protection, and access” divided and united at the same time.

Familiar names connect Steamboat to recreational climbing’s growing excitement as “14’ers” captured the imagination. The Stettner brothers pioneered a direct route on the east face of Longs Peak. Skiing for sport grew when Carl Howelsen moved to Steamboat Springs and established a ski-jumping center. WWII’s Camp Hale became the seed of a new skiing industry in Colorado, and Steamboat’s home-grown Buddy Werner, midway in the century, became its iconic image.

In a final chapter, the authors provide an outstanding visual journey into the Rocky Mountains through the scenes painted during the last century, leaving the reader inspired to look higher, reach for something more. n

Most people who live in the Yampa Valley are responding to the call of a mountain life filled with activities, healthy living and the promise of an incredible community.

Families, single adults and young couples are making the effort and choice to live here.

As I’ve transitioned from a teenager whose parents moved here on such a quest to an adult, I continue to appreciate Steamboat Springs.

Chris and Wendy Puckett had what they described as an ideal life in Boulder. Chris had recently retired from World Cup skiing and was eager to start his new chapter in life. Wendy, a sports marketing manager for Powerbar, had reached an established and coveted place in her career. But 2001 brought big changes with the birth of their first son, Cole, and the sudden desire for an even better life for their new family. “We realized that we really wanted to live in the mountains. We wanted a sense of community and a place where Cole could experience all the opportunities that came with living in such an amazing place.”

The Pucketts knew they had to make the leap of faith.

“We literally sold our place in Boulder. I quit my job and we packed our car and moved to Steamboat. With a few months of savings, I worried how we would ever make it work,” Wendy says. Arriving jobless and without much idea of what the future entailed, they held fast to the hope for a bright tomorrow. “Focusing on our growing family, we knew we wanted to be involved in this community.” Shortly after their move, Wendy put into motion her dream of owning a Pilates studio. People who confused the new-found fitness trend with a type of Italian food were quick to learn the incredible depth and knowledge that she brought.

A different story unfolded in 1992, as a young Pat Stefanek was driving back to Flagstaff, Ariz., where he had

been working as a wildlife biologist. “I’d been working up in Alaska and was headed back to Arizona when I got the the word that the government had a hiring freeze. I was left without a job..” This sudden reality changed his immediate plans. With an invitation from a friend to come visit Steamboat, Pat turned to his sister in their hometown of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., for the final word. “Jill told me, ‘Don’t come back here! Head to Steamboat. I want to move there this spring anyway.’”

Pat took his sister’s advice and started down a path that changed his life forever. “I drove into town with no idea of what was next. I lived at Rabbit Ears Motel for the first couple weeks before finding a place to rent,” Pat says. More than 10 years later, Pat achieved his dream of owning a business when he started the North Park Fishing Club. His sister, Jill, followed suit and became a part of Steamboat’s business community when she opened Kali’s Boutique, which has a strong local following today.

The common thread in these stories is belief in our community and the opportunity for collectively better life. It doesn’t come easy, but the dream is alive and well.
