The Second Annual All Arts Festival Welcome to the second annual Steamboat Springs All Arts Festival! While Steamboat was becoming famous as a breeding ground for Olympians, the town quietly started attracting visual and performing artists of all genres.

Emerald City Opera Performs Carmen Carmen

by Georges Bizet ACT I. Corporal Morales and the soldiers while away the time watching the passers-by, among whom is Micaela, a peasant girl from Navarre.

She asks Morales if he knows Don Jose, and is told that he is a corporal in another platoon, expected shortly. A trumpet call heralds the approach of the relief guard and a gang of street urchins imitating their drill. As the guards change, Morales tells Jose that a girl is looking for him.

Zuniga, the lieutenant in command, questions Corporal Jose about the tobacco factory. A stranger in Seville, Zuniga is apprehensive of the dangerous atmosphere.

The factory bell rings and the men of Seville gather ‘round the female workers as they return after their lunch break. The gypsy Carmen is awaited with anticipation. When the men gather ‘round her, she tells them love obeys no known laws. Only one man pays no attention to her – Jose. Carmen throws a flower at him.

Micaela returns, bringing news of Jose’s mother. She has sent Micaela to give him a letter.

When he starts to read her letter, Micaela runs off in embarrassment since it suggests that he marry her. At the moment that he decides to obey, a fight is heard from within the factory.

Carmen and one of her fellow workers quarreled and the other girl was wounded. Carmen refuses to answer questions and Jose is ordered to tie her up and take her to prison. Carmen entices him to go dancing at Lillas Pastia’s tavern outside the walls of Seville. Mesmerized, Jose agrees to help her escape. He unties the rope and Carmen slips away. Jose is arrested.

ACT II. Carmen and her friends Frasquita and Mercedes entertain Zuniga and the other officers. Zuniga tells Carmen that Jose has been released. A torchlight procession in honor of the bullfighter Escamillo is heard, and the officers invite him in. He describes the excitements of his profession, in particular the amorous rewards that follow a successful bullfight. Escamillo propositions Carmen, but she replies that she is engaged for the moment. He says he will wait.

accomplices. Frasquita and Mercedes are game, but Carmen refuses to leave Seville: she is in love. Her friends are incredulous. The smugglers withdraw. Carmen tells Jose that she has been dancing for his officers. When he reacts jealously, she agrees to entertain him alone. Jose says he must return to the barracks. Stupefied, Carmen mocks him, but he answers by producing the flower she threw and telling her how its faded scent sustained his love during the long weeks in prison. But she replies that if he loved her he would desert and join her in a life of freedom in the mountains. When he refuses, she dismisses him contemptuously. As he leaves, Zuniga bursts in. In jealous rage Jose attacks him. The smugglers return, separate them, and put Zuniga under temporary constraint. Jose now has no choice but to desert and join the smugglers.

ACT III. The gang enters with contraband.

Carmen and Jose quarrel, and Jose gazes regretfully down to the valley where his mother is living. Carmen advises him to join her. The women turn the cards to tell their fortunes: Frasquita and Mercedes foresee rich and gallant lovers, but Carmen’s cards spell death for her and for Jose.

She accepts the prophecy. All depart.

Micaela appears. She says she fears nothing so much as meeting the woman who has turned the man she once loved into a criminal. But she hides in fear when a shot rings out. It is Jose firing at an intruder, who turns out to be Escamillo, transporting bulls to Seville. When he refers to the soldier whom Carmen once loved, Jose reveals himself and they fight. Carmen and the smugglers return and separate them.

Escamillo invites everyone, especially Carmen, to be his guests at the next bullfight in Seville.

Micaela begs Jose to go with her to his mother but he refuses. Micaela reveals that his mother is dying. Jose promises Carmen they will meet again.

ACT IV Carmen enters the bullfight on Escamillo’s arm. Jose enters and implores Carmen to forget the past and start a new life with him. She says everything between them is over: She was born free and free she will die. While the crowd cheers Escamillo, Jose tries to prevent Carmen from joining her new lover. Carmen loses her temper, removes the ring that Jose once gave her and throws it at his feet. Jose stabs her, then confesses to murdering the woman he loved.

Asleep At The Wheel

Asleep at the Wheel turns 40 this year, and the legendary Western swing band shows no symptoms of slowing down. They’ve recently been awarded the Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award and nominated for the Best Americana Album Grammy for Willie and the Wheel, their newest collaboration with Willie Nelson. Asleep at the Wheel has nine Grammy Awards under its belt.

Asleep at the Wheel has been going strong since Rolling Stone anointed them America’s best country and western band in 1977.

Recently they’ve drawn record crowds by adapting their repertoire for pops symphony performances. But the band has never strayed from the lively mix of big band, country and dance music that was popularized in the 30s and 40s by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

Golden Dragon Acrobats

This is a performance filled with astounding feats and incalculable skill. The Golden Dragons Acrobats blend acrobatics with an eclectic score and dazzling costumes. Precision athletes teeter atop precarious stacks of chairs and twirl parasols with their toes. The performers, many of whom started training as young as four years old, are as limber as rubber bands, agile as cats and strong enough to accomplish unfathomable balancing feats.

With mesmerizing spins, balancing, contortionism and seemingly impossible tricks, the ancient art of Chinese acrobatics earned its first fans when powerful emperors took interest 2,500 years ago.

Bone Fire: reading, interview and book signing, Friday, Aug. 20, 5:30-7 p.m.

Off the Beaten Path Wyoming-based author Mark Spragg writes about the people, ranching and land of the West. His acclaimed third novel An Unfinished Life was made into a movie starring Morgan Freeman and Robert Redford.

Now the main characters return in Spragg’s new novel Bone Fire, a mysterious and dark story of renewal. Spragg’s memoir, Where Rivers Change Direction, won the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association Award.

During Spragg’s writer’s workshop he will lecture on the art of writing, including topics ranging from mechanics to the writing “life.” Writers, active and aspiring, will find this workshop a wonderful opportunity to explore the written art of expression.

The Depot

Join the Steamboat Springs Arts Council at their Depot Block Party to celebrate the arts. Complete your All Arts Festival weekend with live music by Steamboat Swings Big Band, view the Summer Art exhibit, and delight yourself in food and libation.

Over a century ago, the Depot opened its doors to become one of the major cattle shipping points in the West. It served passenger rail traffic until 1968. Fallen into disuse, the Depot was resurrected in 1980 by a group of citizens, headed

by Eleanor Bliss, as a community art center and home of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council.

The Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Steamboat Swings is a big band made up of musicians from across the Yampa Valley playing music from the swing era to the present. During the Depot Block Party, the Arts Council’s Member Artists’ Show will be on exhibit throughout the galleries. The party is free, and a cash bar and food will be available.

Thursday, Aug.19 Intro to Watercolor Painting Art Medium: Watercolor Painting Instructor: Mary Levingston Time: 9 a.m.- noon Where: The Depot About the Artist: Mary Levingston is a watercolor instructor at Colorado Mountain College. She has won numerous awards for her work.

About the Workshop: Learn watercolor techniques for creating visual texture. Each participant will leave with technique samples and small vignettes of trees and rocks using combined techniques.

Art Medium: Photography Instructor: Paula Jo Jaconetta Time: noon-2 p.m.

Where: The Depot About the Artist: Paula Jo Jaconetta attended Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and earned her photography degree in Madison, Wis. She started Natural Light Images eight years ago and joined the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat in February 2008.

About the Workshop: After a brief overview in the classroom, head outdoors with cameras for on-site instructions involving depth of field, macro and landscape images.

Capturing Light in Your Paintings

Art Medium: Oil Painting Instructor: Jean Perry Time: 2-5 p.m.

Where: The Depot About the Artist: Jean Perry’s style is impressionistic and she works mainly in oil. Landscapes dominate her work but she enjoys painting animals, still lifes and portraits.

About the Workshop: Use composition, color temperature and value to achieve light and drama in your paintings. After an introduction the workshop continues outside to capture the essence of plein air painting (weather permitting).

Art Medium: Art Appreciation Instructor: Sandra Sherrod Time: 3 p.m.

Where: The Depot About the Artist: Sandra Sherrod studied art at Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat and with Polly Hammett in Houston, Texas. She has showed art at Archway Gallery in Houston, and currently displays works at the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat.

About the Workshop: Examine art movements that influence current painting styles and how artists uses color, pattern and design to create a painting.

Bring: A notebook for note taking

Writer’s Workshop: Finding Your Voice Art Medium: Writing Instructor: Mark Spragg Time: 3-5 p.m.

Where: The Depot About the Artist: Award-winning Wyoming author Mark Spragg writes about the West. His new novel is Bone Fire.

About the Workshop: Mark Spragg will lecture on the art of writing followed by a conversation about everything from writing mechanics to the “writing life.”

Introduction to Plein Air Painting

Art Medium: Watercolor Painting Instructor: Mary Levingston Time: 9 a.m.-noon Where: The Depot About the Artist: Mary Levingston is a watercolor instructor at Colorado Mountain College. She has won numerous awards for her work.

About the Workshop: Beginner and intermediate painters will learn to use a six-way wash to enhance the light source, and how to use it as an under base on which to paint a scene. Other experimental techniques will also be demonstrated.

Bring: Painting supplies.

Art Medium: Oil Painting Instructor: Susan Gill Jackson Time: 3-6 p.m.

Where: Art Tent About the Artist: Susan Gill Jackson is an oil painter with a focus on plein air painting using a limited pallet and limited time. Her award-winning work is exhibited throughout the country and locally at the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat.

About the Workshop: Learn basic principles for creating perspective with color, shapes and values. Susan will demonstrate how plein air painting is an exercise in capturing the moment, the place and most importantly, the light.

Where: The Depot About the Artist: Jen Lowe was first introduced to African Dance in Boulder in 1991 and has been teaching and choreographing locally for Steamboat’s West African performance troupe since 2000.

About the Workshop: This all-levels West African dance class includes a warm-up, isolations and an introduction to movement theory, culminating with learning steps to a traditional West African dance with live drumming.

Where: The Depot About the Artist: Stuart Handloff, artistic director for the Great American Laughing Stock Company, has been an actor, director, instructor and producer for community and educational theater for more than 38 years.

About the Workshop: Geared toward the beginner/intermediate actor (or aspiring actor) 12 years or older, this workshop covers basic acting techniques and approaches using improvisation, theatre games and brief scene work – even if you’ve never been on stage.

Bring: Prepare a one-minute or shorter memorized scene. If not possible, bring any theatrical scenes you wish to be coached on.

Sunday, Aug. 22 Going Deeper With Your Camera Art Medium: Photography Instructor: Paula Jo Jaconetta Time: 10 a.m.-noon Where: The Depot About the Artist: Paula Jo Jaconetta attended Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and earned her photography degree in Madison, Wis. She started Natural Light Images eight years ago and joined the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat in February 2008.

Foreign Film, Alamar Free Foreign Film: Alamar Friday Aug. 20, 7 p.m.

The Depot Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Steamboat Springs Arts Council present Alamar, a 2009 Mexican family-drama in Spanish and Italian with English subtitles, directed by Pedro GonzalezRubio. Jorge has only a few weeks with his five-year-old son, Natan, before he leaves to live with his mother in Rome. Intent on teaching Natan about their Mayan heritage, Jorge takes him to the pristine Chinchorro reef and eases him into the rhythms of a fisherman’s life. As the bond between father and son grows stronger, Natan learns to live in harmony with life above and below the surface of the sea. The screening includes an award-winning short film, fresh popcorn and a cash bar.

The Steamboat Springs Arts Council presents Dirty Deeds at The Depot a full-length melodrama set in a Western railroad town at a beautiful train depot. Enjoy an interactive theater experience as Lacie Camisole, the innocent and somewhat naive sweetheart of San Juan Capistrano and lone heiress to the Camisole ranch, is betrothed to marry Dusty Rhodes when she discovers her childhood love (Justin Tyme) is back in town. An old flame is rekindled, but is it too late? Laugh as the cast mingles with the crowd while you boo and hiss the villain and cheer on the hero. This is a family-friendly show and if you are lucky, you will be on stage too! Tickets cost $25.
