Die Fledermaus (The Bat)

ACT I. At the Eisenstein apartment Through the windows of the Eisenstein home floats the serenade of Alfred, a tenor still in love with his old flame Rosalinde, Gabriel von Eisenstein’s wife. Eisenstein has been sentenced to eight days in prison for insulting an official, partially due to the incompetence of his attorney, Dr. Blind.

Eisenstein’s maid, Adele, receives a letter from her sister, inviting her to Prince Orlofsky’s ball. She pretends her aunt is ill and asks for a leave of absence. Falke, Eisenstein’s friend, invites him to the ball, and Eisenstein bids farewell to Adele and Rosalinde, pretending he’s going to prison.

Rosalinde is then visited by her lover, Alfred, who serenades her. Frank, the governor of the prison, arrives to take Eisenstein to jail, and instead finds Alfred and takes him to jail, thinking he is Eisenstein. (Finale, drinking song: “Happy is he who forgets” followed

by Rosalinde’s defense: “In tête-à-tête with me so late,” and Frank’s invitation: “My beautiful, large bird-cage.”)

Act 2 – Masquerade Ball at the Villa Orlofsky With Prince Orlofsky’s permission, Falke is orchestrating the ball to get revenge on Eisenstein. The previous winter, Eisenstein had abandoned a drunken Falke dressed as a bat in the center of town, exposing him to ridicule.

Falke has invited Frank, Adele and Rosalinde to the ball. Rosalinde pretends to be a Hungarian countess, Eisenstein goes by the name “Marquis Renard,” Frank is “Chevalier Chagrin,” and Adele pretends she is an actress. Eisenstein is confused because of 6 | Steamboat All Arts Festival

Falke introduces the disguised Rosalinde to Eisenstein. During an amorous tête-àtête, she succeeds in extracting a valuable watch from her husband’s pocket. Rosalinde agrees to sing a song about her “native” land, after which the guests move to a magnificent dining area. In a rousing finale, the company celebrates and the guests dance until dawn.

When the clock strikes six, Eisenstein staggers off to jail.

Act 3 - The prison offices of Governor Frank The next morning at the prison, the jailer, Frosch, has become gloriously drunk. He tries to keep order among the inmates, who are unable to sleep because of Alfred’s singing.

Frank arrives, still giddy with champagne, followed shortly by Ida and Adele, who, thinking him a theatrical agent, believes he might further her stage aspirations.

Frosch locks up Adele and her sister and admits Eisenstein. The new prisoner is surprised that his cell is already occupied by an imposter who was found supping with Rosalinde. To obtain an explanation, Eisenstein snatches a legal robe and wig from his astonished lawyer.

No sooner is he disguised than Rosalinde hurries in to secure Alfred’s release and press divorce charges against her errant husband. With her would-be paramour, she confides her flirtation to the “lawyer.”

Enraged, Eisenstein removes his disguise and accuses his wife of promiscuity, at which Rosalinde whips forth the watch she took from him at the ball.

The height of tumult arrives when Falke appears with guests from the ball and declares the whole thing an act of vengeance for the “Fledermaus.” They sing a final toast as Eisenstein is led away to jail.

Emerald City Opera Performs Hänsel & Gretel Sunday, Aug. 21, 3 p.m.

Act 1

When their mother finds them dancing around the house, Hånsel and Gretel are sent to the woods to pick strawberries.

After they leave, their father comes in and tells Mother that the evil Gingerbread Witch dwells in the forest. She lures children with cakes and sweets, pushes them into her oven, where they turn to gingerbread, and then eats them.

Act 2

An instrumental interlude connects act one to act two, so they are performed with no intermission.

Hänsel tries to find the way out of the forest, but he cannot. At dark, A little Sandman puts the children to sleep, with 14 angels protecting them.

Act 3

The children wake to an enormous gingerbread house. Unable to resist temptation, they nibble on it. The witch comes out, takes out her wand and freezes Hånsel and Gretel where they stand. The witch leads Hänsel to the cage and has him show her his finger, but he puts out a bone instead. Disappointed that he is so thin, the witch tries to feed Hänsel while Gretel steals her wand. The witch tells Gretel to peek inside the oven to see if the gingerbread is done. When the witch opens the oven and leans in, Hänsel and Gretel shove her in. They dance, and the gingerbread children turn back into humans.

Barrage unleashes Soundtrack of the World

Strings Music Pavilion “Barrage is too wow for words!”

– The Denver Post Barrage is a high-energy fiddle fest, weaving together musicianship and dance with traces of everything from country to heavy metal music. Five violinists are backed up with percussions, vocals, guitar, bagpipes and choreography. The result is a show in the genre of “Stomp” and “Riverdance.”

“Barrage is too wow for words!” says The Denver Post.

Created in Calgary in 1997, this violin-based, world-beat ensemble has released seven albums. The musicians’ backgrounds range from jazz, bluegrass and Celtic to swing, rock, classical and Middle Eastern fusion.

Barrage’s soundtrack has even dipped into contemporary versions of traditional material from China, Ukraine, and India. Everyone in the group sings.

For Strings Music Festival, Barrage unveils its new show, Soundtrack of the World. Fresh material highlights the group’s virtuoso cast of young musicians performing a mix of world music and dance with non-stop intensity.

The show’s play list ranges from Coldplay to musical theater filled with choreography and fast foot work.

“After an evening of performing jigs on rocket fuel, it’s no wonder that more than a few horsehairs snapped on their bows,” says the “Los Angeles Daily News.”

The group consists of Kristina Bauch (violin and tin whistle), Tim Harley (bass guitar), Phil Smyth (guitar), Taylor Morris (violin), Daniel Pentecost (violin and bagpipes), Kiana Weber (violin and mandolin), Charles Bullough (drums) and Lindy Donia (violin).

Dean Marshall is the artistic director.

Barrage has performed in at least 27 countries and conducts an ongoing educational program in schools. Some of the current Barrage members saw earlier versions of the group when they were in middle school and set their sights on joining the group one day.

“Many bands in the past half century have chosen strange names that don’t seem to mean anything,” says the St. Petersburg Times. “The name chosen for the musical group Barrage, on the other hand, is perfectly obvious: Eight high-powered musicians present a barrage of sound and sights when they take the stage.”

John Gorka came out of New York City’s Greenwich Village folk scene. He has recorded 11 solo albums, and Rolling Stone calls him “the preeminent male singer/songwriter of the new folk movement.”

Friday, Aug. 19, 8 p.m.

Strings Music Pavilion Red Horse is Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky – the trio that has united three major voices in contemporary American acoustic songwriting, coming together to create last year’s top-selling folk album.

Gilkyson is a politically minded singer-songwriter of roots, folk and Americana music. In

The New Yorker describes singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky as “a truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs.” She has recorded seven albums, two of which were awarded Best Pop Album of the Year by the Association for Independent Music.

Together, the Red Horse trio mixes new and old songs, traditional folk and contemporary Americana, landing on the “Billboard” charts.

Others chose different subject matter and media. “We’ve had more sculptural works than in the past, and some of the newer members are involved too,” Myers says.

Thursday, Aug. 18, 5-8 p.m.

The Depot Vibrant, colorful summer works are one element of the annual Steamboat Arts Council Members Show, which kicks off with an opening reception at the Depot on Thursday, Aug. 18, 5-8 p.m.

“We’ve really seen a lot of interest this year,” says Park Myers, artistic director of the Arts Council. More than 30 members are participating.

Although the show has no specific theme,

For example, long-time local Johnny Walker, who has not participated in the show in more than a decade, has created a “political statement” from found objects, including a replica AR-15 U.S. assault rifle. Walker, a retired shop teacher, works with local children to create art from found objects.

“As a kind of accidental artist,” Walker says, “at least in my shop, we don’t do art. Art does us. We have no idea where we’re going to go, we just let things happen and voila!”

And voila! A members’ show to remember.

Yampa River Art Stroll Zakary Pelaccio is the executive chef at 5 Ninth and Fatty Crab in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The two restaurants reflect the distinctive facets of his culinary education and experience. The eclectic European menu at 5 Ninth showcases Pelaccio’s classical training at the French Culinary Institute, where he graduated first in his class, followed by stints at The French Laundry with Thomas Keller and Daniel with Daniel Boulud. The menu also reflects his travels across western Europe.

At his more recent endeavor, Fatty Crab, located just around the corner, his Southeast Asian menu with a spotlight on Malay cuisine reflects Pelaccio’s time spent traveling and cooking in Asia before he even started culinary school. He worked as a cook for six months at Seri Melayu in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in the Thai kitchen of the Westin Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

and it’s just as important to know where your ideas come from as it is to know where your beef comes from. Because some states of Malaysia are former British colonies, it’s normal to find these British remnants in the form of fish and chips or beans on toast at Malaysian cafes. Historically, culturally, this sort of fusion makes sense and there’s a place for it on my menu.”

“I believe first in the quality of ingredients, local purchasing and in cooking seasonally,” Pelaccio says. “I also think it’s really important for food to make sense and have a sense of place. It’s clear when a dish went through an uninformed creative process, when it hasn’t really been inspired by original, nostalgic, congruent thought.

Signature spices in Pelaccio’s recipes include chin chalook, a salted, fermented Malaysian shrimp. “It comes in a jar, and it’s pretty intense. I like to use it for brining meat—it works the same way as regular brine, but it’s got more depth,” Pelaccio says. His dishes balance acidity, sweetness, fattiness, chili, and texture.

About the Workshop: A three-hour introduction to plein air painting, including equipment, set-up, subject and composition. After a half-hour demonstration, students will begin painting with personal direction from McGee. A handout provides definitions, illustrations and information. Some painting experience is helpful.

About the artist: Former high school teacher Bonnie McGee has studied with noted plein air artists and exhibited at galleries and events, including the Estes Park Plein Air Festival. Her work begins with dark oil washes and moves into light.
