A&G G Welcome to Steamboat Hello and welcome to our wonderful community of Steamboat Springs, where arts and skiing flow hand-inhand like the waters from our magical hot springs. We live in a community that values all that is beautiful, whether it be the river and creeks running through our town, the golden aspen leaves in fall, the green of summer or the white of winter. The art and cultural venues in our community also add to this beauty, and welcome visitors who want to become part of our local color. As you explore our wonderful town, please

visit our art galleries and support our visual artists by taking home a piece of art to remind you of your visit. Don’t forget to enjoy our performing artists, too, by catching a local band at one of our bars or taverns, or by attending a performance by one of our many outstanding musicians, singers, dancers or actors. From classical music to cabaret, the variety of talent here is remarkable. I hope you enjoy your time in Steamboat and come to realize that we are more than just a ski town, a ranching town, or a friendly little town in Northwest Colorado. Steamboat is an amazing place to live and visit. Maybe I’ll see you on the slopes or at the Depot! Kelly Anzalone President • Steamboat Springs Arts Council

Cover Artist - Denise Bohart Brown Denise Bohart Brown was snowshoeing along the Uranium Mine Trail late last year when she was struck by the contrasting shadows and patterns that surrounded her. “I immediately knew it would make a beautiful quilt,” says the artist, whose media range from fibers to fused glass. The resulting quilt, “Early Snow on the Uranium Mine Trail,” is the winning entry in this edition’s cover art contest. To create this stunning design, Denise first photographed the setting, then transferred the image to the computer and designed the quilt from there. She used a technique called “paper piecing,” which employs creating a paper template. The finished piece, 15 inches by 24 inches, features white-on-white and silver-on-white cotton fabric and tiny gold beads that add glimmer and shine. “I have been creating things as long as I can remember,” Denise says. She grew up in a ranching family on the eastern plains of 2 • Winter 2009/10

Colorado. After graduating from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1990, she moved to San Francisco to pursue a commercial photography career. Denise then moved to Davis, Calif., and worked at the UC Davis Craft Center, managing the ceramics and photography labs there. She moved with her husband and daughter in June 2005 to Steamboat Springs and says she is happy to be home, and also to be in “such a rich, diverse and inspirational artistic environment.”

A&G G Visual Arts On Display In addition to the many commercial galleries in Steamboat Springs, compelling art exhibits and sales are hosted in two historic venues.

The Depot, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, hosts monthly exhibits in its galleries. “Local Colors,” the December/January show, features oil, acrylic and watercolor by 10 women “who love to paint,” explains Mary Levingston, chair of the visual arts for the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. The exhibit features a variety of styles and genres and fills the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts with color. In February, new work by local artist Greg Effinger will be showcased. Renowned for his watercolors of Yampa Valley settings, Greg’s portfolio also includes architectural renderings, family portraits and still lifes. Watercolorist and pen-and-ink artist Carol Jean is featured in March. In addition to traditional florals, Carol Jean also creates fanciful commentaries that are expressions of various life stages and events. May marks the return of the annual Routt County Youth Show, a longstanding annual exhibit of works by students in grade, middle and high school. The depth of talent in the county continually amazes viewers.

For more information about The Depot shows, call 970-879-9008. Meanwhile, Steamboat Art Museum’s winter exhibit features masterpieces by Ken Carlson, considered by many to be the foremost wildlife artist alive today. His work is in public and private collections as well as the National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta, Genesee Country Museum in Mumford, N.Y., and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisc. He has been profiled in Wildlife Art, Southwest Art, Art of the West, Sporting Classics, Field and Stream, Sports Afield, the Prix de West, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. A&G G Performing Arts Scene Big band sounds, rock’n’roll, a community band and a jazz brunch…the performing arts in Steamboat Springs are flourishing. In an effort to revitalize the Steamboat Springs Arts Council in the wake of the economic recession, performing arts are becoming an integral part of the arts scene. The Steamboat Swing Band is one of the new additions. Founded by Henry Savage, the group usually features five sax players, three trombones, four trumpets, piano, bass, drums and guitars. They play at community events, and have quickly found an audience for the classic big-band sounds of artists like Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. “We do it because people want to play this kind of music,” says lead tenor saxophonist Mike Lewis.

The Steamboat Swing Band performs on the Fourth of July.

The Yampa Valley Community Band, another newcomer to the local scene, is conducted by Mark Rasmussen. The amateur organization, consisting of middle and high school

The old train station, now home to the Arts Council, is the venue of choice for many local performers. “It’s fun to play there,” says Andy Pratt, an accomplished musician in several genres. “It has so many memories, and the acoustics are good.” Having recently played at The Depot with Trouble or Nothing, a rock band, for its CD release party, Andy hopes to present a brunch with his jazz trio, featuring a special guests, food and coffee. Arts Council president Kelly Anzalone is helping to organize a Singer/Songwriter Series at the Depot, which also provides rehearsal space to dance groups and the Steamboat Springs Orchestra, which has its offices there. Even as the coal train rumbles by, The Depot is alive with melodic harmonies of its own.

A&G G First Friday Artwalk

Steamboat Springs First Friday Artwalk is an art and cultural district with more than 26 downtown galleries, restaurants, businesses and shops.

The Artwalk is held the first Friday of every month, 5 to 8 p.m., and is free. For current information and specific stops on any given Friday, visit www.steamboatspringsartwalk.com. Images courtesy Deborah Olsen

The Artwalk, which began in 2008 with a mission to foster appreciation of the visual arts and support the growth of the local art community, often attracts hundreds of locals and visitors.

including beauty salons, real estate offices and restaurants.

Exhibits encompass contemporary, emerging and traditional art including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, graphic art and textiles, combined with hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Musical performances often add to the experience at various venues. No two Artwalks are alike, featuring the latest work by the local art community and entertainment ranging from classical music to rock’n’roll. The stops may vary from month to month but in general, most downtown galleries participate regularly, along with a handful of less conventional art venues, 8 • Winter 2009/10
