Welcome to steamboat

ike Town USA by summer, Ski Town USA in the winter…a remarkable art town all year long.

Steamboat Springs was named one of the “100 Best Art Towns in America” for good reason. With more than a dozen galleries, 50-plus artist members in the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, an active dance community and a lively and diverse music scene, it’s no wonder it made the top-100 list. This summer, the community celebrates the 100th anniversary of PerryMansfield Performing Arts School and Camp, the 39th annual Art in the Park, the 12th annual Art on the Mountain, Strings Music Festival’s 26th summer season, Emerald City Opera’s second decade and so much more! The Arts Council sponsors its not-tobe-missed annual Artist Member Show this July at the Depot, which is on the National Historic Register. In August,

join us for the All Arts Festival, which brings top regional artists to town for the Art Stroll, along with culinary demonstrations, a street fair and performing arts events. The perfect Steamboat summer getaway is a blend of great outdoor activities like mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking, and the town’s amazing cultural and artistic opportunities. Follow the lead of the community’s talented plein air artists, who work every Tuesday at the Yampa River Botanic Park, a source of inspiration and a refreshing respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Steamboat in the summertime… cool, creative and energizing. The Steamboat Springs Arts Council welcomes you! Clark Davidson Executive Director, Steamboat Springs Arts Council

“I may answer that a particular piece is a photograph, mixed media, interpretive or abstract art. Creating artwork that conveys an emotion is a distinct element of my artistic vision,” Gmeiner says. “The observer’s impression goes beyond that which is embedded in a digital file or negative. Often, an inspirational work of art asks more questions than it answers. The completed piece invites each observer to have a unique response.” “Horizontal Divide” began as an image taken at the Yampa River Botanic Park in October 2011. Gmeiner moved his camera vertically and experimented with various shutter speeds until he achieved a vertically striking image, which he processed with Photoshop for proper exposure. “As I viewed the image, I visualized the usual occurrence of flocks of birds migrating in the fall. I decided to print it on canvas and then paint birds horizontally dividing the cattails,” he explains. Gmeiner’s formal training is in orthopedic surgery, but while he was

growing up, drawing and photography were his pastimes. In the 1970s, his orthopedic professor, who was an accomplished photographer, mentored Gmeiner in the art of image capture and darkroom techniques. From there, he continued on his self-taught creative journey. “Just as medicine evolves, so does the artistic process,” Gmeiner says. “Unlike medicine, art allows me freedom to play and be comfortable with a sense of ‘anything goes.” “From beginning to end, my artwork comes from my eyes and hands, including printing the final image. Contemplating the subject matter inspires me at times to print a pure photograph, where the image is simply the image. That same image may some day have a life of its own because of a dream, musical lyrics or a movie that orchestrates in my mind, a story waiting to be told.”

his is the hour of the crane: enveloped by the rising sun’s crimson hues, the sandhill crane flaunts its six-foot wingspan and embeds its beak in the marsh. Regular summertime encounters with the elegant bird have stimulated much creativity in the region. In honor of the iconic species, the second annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival is inviting artists to translate experiences with the sandhill crane into art of any medium.

Last year’s festival showcased approximately 30 pieces of art featuring the sandhill crane. Organizers, Lynn Kelley and Dona Steele, were impressed by the diversity in art forms, having received pieces including stained glass, photographs, a woodblock print, a quilt,

paintings, jewelry and a sculpture. The Steamboat Springs Arts Council Depot will once again serve as the venue for accepted artworks and any overflow will be displayed at the Center for Visual Arts, Images of Nature and the Wild Goose Coffee Shop at the Granary in Hayden. In anticipation of the cranes’ migration south in mid-September, the festival is slated for Friday-Monday, Sept. 6-9. In addition to the art show, the art portion of the festival will incorporate a talk by renowned wildlife photographer Michael Forsberg, a sketcha-crane workshop, a plein air painting workshop, a quick-draw contest as well as a coloring contest for kids. Through these festivities, the committee hopes to strengthen the community’s connection with the sandhill crane. Organizer Nancy Merrill hopes that a greater artistic presence for the cranes will make them more recognizable in the wild. She says, “Our purpose is to protect them and educate people about them. Art is a wonderful way to achieve that.”

hat better way to celebrate 100 years than through the art of dance? Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp heralds its centennial anniversary with an energetic schedule of special events. Dance the night away at the Tango Fest Sunday, July 14, when professional dancers Nick Jones and Diana Cruz join C Street Brass, Strings Music Festival artists and Colorado Mountain College to create a milonga at CMC. Learn to tango, watch the pros and join the dance party — all in one evening. “We’ll all get to tango,” says Perry-Mansfield Executive Director Joan Lazarus. “A milonga is a type of nightclub setting, a Buenos Aires atmosphere that we’ll be recreating in Colorado.” The cornerstone centennial event is slated for Saturday, July 20, when patrons gather at Charlotte Perry’s

historic house to tell stories, get a little wild and plot the future. “Everybody who has ever been involved is invited to share anecdotes and old pictures. We’ll have some ceremonies, and it’ll be really fun,” Lazarus says. “RSVP early if you’d like to attend, though, as we can’t have more than 200 people there.” Tour the authentic campus during Fantasies, Frolics and Faire, an open house and opportunity to draw, sing, dance, act and create on Sunday, July 21. This event is designed to demonstrate the beauty of the Perry-Mansfield campus. The Scene Crawl, Tuesday-Wednesday, July 23-24, offers another exciting chance to tour the Perry-Mansfield property. This roaming performance of important scenes from theater repertoire takes the audience from one studio and outdoor setting to the next. “I’m so excited about it,” Lazarus says. “I want

people to experience the campus. We’ll move from venue to venue — some of them will be outdoors. It’s a moveable feast.” An Evening of Dance, Friday-Sunday, July 26-28, brings some of Perry-Mansfield’s most famous performances to the Steamboat Springs High School stage. Scenes from “Rodeo,” the ballet Agnes DeMille wrote after her camp visit, plus an excerpt from “Esplanade” by Robert Taylor — “one of my favorites pieces,” Lazarus says — and the premiere performance of a new piece by Ailey Artistic Director Robert Battle are on the program. Young performers take center stage during YouthFest and Discovery Camp in early August. This combination of dance and theater is “really fun to watch,” Lazarus says. “It’s wonderful.” Perry-Mansfield’s packed calendar endeavors to make 2013 the summer of dance.

Cowgirl Up With Donna Howell-Sickles

lassic depictions of the Old American West typically entrust the cowboys and gunslingers with delivering the story, but Donna HowellSickles’ version stars the cowgirl. Works by the renowned cowgirl artist are on exhibit at the Helen Rehder Gallery in the Steamboat Art Museum through Sunday, Oct. 13. For more than 30 years, the Texas-born artist has made a living out of painting the cowgirl in her natural element. Bold color schemes and charcoal sketch lines characterize her artistic style. HowellSickles typically opts for a mixed media approach, using acrylics, pastels, charcoal

and colored pencils. This elegant blend of media, combined with the subjects’ old-fashioned attire, makes her work evocative of the 1930s. Howell-Sickles cites an early encounter with a vintage postcard as having a defining influence on her concentration as an artist. “My fascination with the cowgirl image began in my last year of college,” says Howell-Sickles. “I received an old postcard...of a cowgirl c. 1935 seated on a horse captioned, ‘Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from the Ole Southwest.’ The image spoke to me and I had no idea why. Although I had grown up on a farming and ranching

operation in Texas, we never really thought of ourselves as Western. I surrendered to the attraction and as I used the cowgirl in my art, I slowly filled in the blanks about my fascination with the imagery.” To supplement the cowgirl’s personal narrative, Howell-Sickles often incorporates allusions and symbolism pertaining to classical mythology. Though certain details in her images may be rooted in past eras, her works in their entireties will continue to be timeless representations of that exuberant cowgirl spirit.

Artist Member Show

ocal artist Cindy Wither leafs through a scrapbook containing images and 1970s newspaper clippings from a tumultuus time for Steamboat Springs’ Depot. In 1972, the building that would become the center of the Steamboat art world was on the brink of financial ruin. Thanks to the efforts of several patrons of the arts, the Depot rebounded the following year and launched what has become one of the biggest art shows in the Yampa Valley. The Artist Member Show is an annual event that showcases the works of Arts Council members. Artists are invited to submit up to three pieces in any medium. Because the

show attracts a vast array of artworks, the challenge for curators is to put together a smart arrangement. For artist Dona Steele, the show fulfills a yearly objective. As part of the inclusive nature of the show, the Visual Arts Committee welcomes submissions from both professionals and amateurs. “It’s good for people who don’t have time to be full-time artists, but still like to get their brushes wet,” says Steele. The show runs from Friday, July 5, through Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Depot, giving artists a two-month window to exhibit their works. In addition to providing artists with a public venue, the show also offers financial incentives.

Each featured piece is for sale. Artists also vye for the “People’s Choice Award” on opening night, when patrons cast their votes for their favorite creation. As one of the show’s requirements, each participating artist must contribute in some way to the production of the exhibit. This twofold investment in both the creative and business aspects of local art is perhaps part of the legacy that Steamboat’s “founding artists” have left for the community. The Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts at the Depot is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, noon-3 p.m. For more information about the Artist Member Show, visit www.steamboatspringsarts.com.
