C.R.E.W. CULTURAL REVIVAL & ENHANCEMENT WORKSHOP I FALL 2021

C.R.E.W. After identifying that gentrification has caused a divide in the neigborhood of Francisville, a mission to create a cultural workshop was set in place. Focusing on cultural revival and amplification, the workshop serves to enhance the community that once was close-knit by providing a space for cultural artwork and neighborhood storytelling to take place. C.R.E.W. is a space where exploration, discussion, and community enhancement can happen, ultimately bringing together both long-term and new residents despite the negative effects of gentrification.

NEIGHBORHOOD EQUITY UNIQUE COMMUNITIES OF PHILADELPHIA I FALL 2021 Within a three week journey of identifying, analyzing, and documenting the equity of Rittenhouse, Manayunk, and Kensington, it became clear that although the city celebrates diverse culture and inclusion, there is a vast difference in equity between neighborhoods. The research helped to brand this idea that equity does not stop a community from growing, but betters it. For example, looking back at Kensington, the community was close-knit despite the circumstances of inequity, but the services and programs to build the neighborhood up could give it a quality to that of Rittenhouse and Manayunk. These hypotheses and conclusions were made by analyzing and comparing the amounts and types of people, smells, noises, wind, trash, landscape, and buildings among the individual neighborhoods.

HOUSE OF PEACE MENDING THE CRACK OF STRAWBERRY MANSION I SPRING 2021
14
15
HOUSE OF PEACE The mission for the House of Peace was to create a space for members of Strawberry Mansion to come together and worship, socialize, or just relax. After researching George Nakashima’s Alter of Peace Table, similarities between the site and the crack in the table were seen. The idea of “mending the crack” was then proposed and initiated the push for the structure to connect the two roads between the knuckle site at Edgley Field. Additionally, the pre-existing patio space pushed the foal that visitors would interact with the site deeper and materials used would respond to natural resources.

DOX THRASH HOUSE HYBRID PRESERVATION I FALL 2020
20
21
DOX THRASH HOUSE Sharswood, Philadelphia is filled with architecture that speaks of the past. The Dox Thrash House was home to one of the first African American printmakers who was an icon to the community. Almost forty years later, the only thing left of the house is its front facade. The mission for this design was to keep the original facades of Dox Thrash and its neighboring rowhouses while making a completely new structure behind it. Since jazz music was popular in Thrash’s time, it felt right to create a space dedicated to music. For the benefit of the community, the building centered around an outdoor performance space that had multiple entrances and was accessible from the highly used library.
