Hi

there, my name is Jules Vandewalle. I’m a 23 y/o student at the University of Antwerp, more specific the faculty of Design Sciences.

Currently I’m in the 3rd bachelor of Product Development, in which I intend to achieve a master degree.

In this portfolio I will introduce myself. I hope to present my professional side and my personal side aswell.

I’m interested in a broad variety of things: design, engineering, sports, music,… but the thing I’m the most interested in is experience new things, new places, new faces.

On a daily basis I’m occupied trying to understand the world and try to inspire myself by doing research on all the topics I’m interested in.

I would describe myself as an enjoyable, social, empathic and inquisitive person. But I’m also a dreamer, preoccupied by thoughts, sometimes even absent. My main goal in life is to find a way to develop these dreams into experiences.

In the following pages I will present my personal side by a collection of images taken the last year. Altough it is hard to choose which images define me the most, I’m sure these will make a good impression of what defines me or what I think is important now and in the future.

Project 01 Hyperbrace is a project I worked on during a topic on Inclusive Design. Together with my friend and colleague Bart Bleys, we developed a knee brace that empowers heavy duty workers.

The main goal of this project is to develop an aid, that suits the user, that is attractive to use and eliminates any forthcoming stigma.

Project 02 A multifunctional seating furniture that respects the free space of the rooftop when desired. This is possible due to the built-in folding furniture. There are two different modules; a seat module and a module with table top. These can be configured as desired and are movable due to their light weight. This is due to the ingeniously folded pieces of steel, which significantly improves the strength of the 2 mm thick steel plate.

The furniture fulfills three functions. In the first place, it is a seating area, where the user can relax on the rooftop with all comfort. Secondly, this module serves as a planter, something that often appears as an ornamental element on a roof terrace. Finally, the module is an excellent windshield while protecting the privacy of the users.

Project 03 Advanced CAD modelling.

Design an animation figure or dinosaurus in SolidWorks, using splines and surfaces. Render the figure in high resolution and use fitting materials and sceneries.

Design a portable beamer in three varieties: starting from a basic model, derive into a model based on an animal and one ‘pro’ version.

The goal is to become a ‘smart’adjustable cad model, using SolidWorks configuration.

Project 04 Up2Mate is a project I worked on during the classes of User Experience.

The challenge of this topic was to design a device that enhances rich interaction for communication between a sick pupil and the classroom. Making a prototype with ‘working’ interface was the main goal of this project.

Additional to this assignment we had to deliver an annimated video, composed in After Effects and Premiere Pro.

UP 2 MATE

Project 05 This report was written in response to the design brief for the subject Structural Design. The purpose of the assignment is to analyse and structurally improve an elaborated product concept designed during the bachelor thesis in the previous year.

In the first phase, an analysis was made of the existing product concept. From this conclusions were drawn and summarized in a set of requirements. The intention was not to rethink the entire concept, but rather to identify and tackle the weak points. The new product concept will also be analysed and verified against the requirements made.

Project 06 In the following paper the structural integrity of a workshop crane is examined, measured and evaluated.

The study that will be described in this paper consists of two calculations. First, a basic verification is performed in which both the components and the connecting pins are calculated. Then a check for convergence is performed. Finally, adjustments are carried out.

In order to calculate the crane, SolidWorks Simulation, Student Engineering Kit 2019-2020 (http://solidworks.com) was utilised. The aim of this paper is to verify the chosen dimensions and materials that define the product, through virtual calculations. The 3D model that will be used is downloaded from the site Grabcad (www.grabcad.com). A workshop crane is a kind of mobile crane used to lift heavy parts, such as an engine block from a car. Because of the versatility of such a type of crane, in this paper a load of 9810 N is set on the crane, which corresponds to a mass of 1 ton, and a safety factor of 1.5 is taken into account.

Project 07 Digital Concept Drawing extends the knowledge and skills of sketching, and visual and spatial thinking. The knowledge and use of new media and digital techniques, such as working with a drawing tablet and specific sketching software, are taught and practised through short exercises. Special attention is granted to making quick digital concept drawings and representing human figures in performance drawings and user scenarios.
