JUICY ESCAPE FINALLY OPENS! After almost a decade in the making, Jason’s incredible new retreat, Juicy Escape, finally opened its doors and welcomed the first guests on 9 May for an amazing inaugural week.

The finishing touches ran to the last minute before more than 100 guests arrived, the first to experience Europe’s Healthiest Playground where everyBODY is welcome!

Those lucky enough to have

secured a stay at the sellout week were blown away by the vast health village, nestled in a secluded valley in the eastern Algarve.

Jason’s vision for the 70room retreat has been fully realised and he expressed relief and gratitude on social media that the first two weeks at Juicy Escape sold out within 48 hours, affirming his belief, ‘If you build it, they will come’.

Come they certainly did, and what a week it was! Guests got to experience every aspect of the 40-acre village’s Sports Zone which includes padel, pickleball, tennis and volleyball courts, a 200m running track, state-of-theart gym with boxing ring, Spin Studio, mini Olympics, and outdoor Santa Monica Beach gym. With an upper and lower beach, 25-metre pool and lake, there are plenty of spots to cool off.

But perhaps the biggest story of the opening week was the people. What began with introductions and a little nervous excitement quickly became a genuine sense of community. Jason led the retreat with talks, walks, games and tons of fun – something Juicy Escape delivers in spades! – and described the last two days as, “Up there with the best I have ever had at any of our retreats in 23 years”.

JUICY ESCAPE A DREAM COME TRUE… As the dust settled on the opening weeks at Juicy Escape, we caught up with Jason to see how he feels about the brand-new retreat You made it! How did it feel to finally welcome the first guests to Juicy Escape?

“Frightening! The builders left 30 minutes before the first guests arrived! The first three days were challenging as the generators weren’t supplying enough power, so we had TVs coming on at midnight! There was plenty of fire-fighting as we figured out what ran smoothly and what needed tweaking, but the team was AMAZING and the guests were FANTASTIC. In particular, I want to publicly thank my Katie, without whom Juicy

supply chains and the spa cost four times more than we had budgeted.

The worst part was when the company creating our accommodation went into liquidation owing £1m and then, three months before we opened, Storm Kristin hit Portugal which caused some damage and our building team had to stop work to take care of their own homes and families.”

How was the first week?

“Having seen Juicy Escape as a building project for seven years, I was unsure how it would work in practice, but

Escape would NEVER have opened. I may have had the vision, but she was instrumental in turning that dream into reality and worked tirelessly to bring everything together. Quite simply, without her, Juicy Escape wouldn’t be what it is today.”

What have the challenges been along the way?

“Well, there have certainly been a few. We started building a year before the pandemic, then the war in Ukraine affected Page 02 | JUICY NEWS

the minute you bring likeminded people together, it becomes a community, a genuine village where everybody connects. There were a couple of standout moments. Setting off at 6.30am with a group to cycle to the beach; seeing 100 people rebounding with energy flowing from everyone; and having fun playing racket sports and volleyball was fantastic.

The scale quickly became apparent – with 100 people, it was like there was nobody there, there’s so much space to do your own thing

and then come together as a group when you want to. On the first week, 90 per cent of the guests had been to Juicy Oasis. They are amazing humans who were bold enough to take a gamble and put up with our teething troubles. People were nothing but positive and saw past it all, which was brilliant. We raised our game and put on a disco diva dance on the last night, which was incredible.”

What changes have you already made?

“We quickly learned what needed refining by seeing it first-hand. For example, the bowl food went down really well, but we’ve tweaked the menu and now have an

Ayurvedic chef coming in to explain what’s in each dish and why it’s been selected for its health benefits.”

Now it’s open, what’s your favourite part of Juicy Escape?

“That’s like asking someone their favourite movie!

What’s so wonderful is that the different areas are carved out to fit the site’s topography and each has its own unique vibe. Watching the sun go down as you chill out on the beach is a real ‘woh!’ moment, and walking into the spa, you could be in Dubai, while the hub has a real village feel. Each zone is different, but they combine into an incredible place that feels truly special.”

SOPHIE’S’ STORY: BACK ON TRACK Sophie explains how a Juicy Escape retreat helped her recover from burnout “I’ve recently had exams, and I was really stressed and quite burnt out. I came here for a reset, to get back into fitness and healthy nutrition, as well as to relax and to start to feel like myself again.

“I’ve done a couple of juice cleanses, but the maximum is three or four days. I’ve not done a full six or seven.

I think what surprised me most is that on day two or three, you do get a little bit hungry, but then on days four and five, you actually wake up with loads of energy. I feel so much better now than when I was at home, not juicing and eating less healthy foods.

“It’s definitely given me more energy, and I prefer doing my fitness and exercise when I feel like this, because everything just moves better.

morning we went on a bike ride to the beach and had a dip. That was one of the highlights of my trip.

“Being here is such a great atmosphere. It’s so enjoyable. I also spent time in the gym, just to keep up with my own fitness, and I swam. It just feels so free, and it’s so fun to play and not think about anything.

It reminds me of when I was young, which I really like.

“I used to do competitive trampolining, and that’s where my love of fitness stems from. I did rebounding every day at Juicy Escape, which was so much fun and definitely something I would like to continue doing, so maybe I’ll have to buy a mini trampoline back at home.

“It’s such an easy exercise that you don’t feel like you’re doing a lot, but you actually are. I’ll rave about it to all of my friends and family and try to get everyone involved.

“I’ve also tried new things like padel and pickleball, which have been really fun and something I want to pursue at home too.

“I’ve learned a lot from the talks this week, and one of the main things is consistency. Going forward, I’m going to keep doing things for myself, for example, running or fitness. When I’m revising really hard, I’m going to have juices during the day.

I really enjoy them, and it takes away the need to think about food and preparing a nutritious meal.

“I would highly recommend Juicy Escape to anyone thinking about trying a retreat. Before coming, I felt like I’d lost myself, but coming here has put me back on the right track.

“I feel a lot more like myself now and I’m going to continue with the good routines that I used to have and had lost. It’s been a fantastic experience.”

GUT FEELING

INSIDE THE RETREATS COLONIC EXPERIENCE If you’ve stayed at a Juice Master Retreat, you’ll have heard about the benefits of colonics as part of the experience. Therapist Paula Atkinson explains why health, harmony and happiness really do all stem from our gut!

For many guests arriving at a Juice Master Retreat, a colonic hydrotherapy treatment can be one of the more unfamiliar experiences of the programme. But, according to Paula Atkinson, who has been a colonic hydrotherapist at Juice Master Retreats since 2015, it can become one of the most talked-about parts of the week.

“Many people who come on retreat are quite burnt out in life,” she explains.

“They’re already here with an open mind and ready to change.

When you’re cleaning up your body’s system, juice and colonics go hand in hand. It’s not just about what you consume as food and fluid that impacts our body, it’s about the whole environment.”

COMFORT ZONE For anyone who has never experienced colonic hydrotherapy, the treatment may sound a bit daunting.

Paula’s approach is deliberately gentle, beginning with conversation rather than immediately starting the treatment.

“It takes a few minutes to get used to the sensation,” she says, explaining that her role is to make sure guests feel relaxed and in control throughout the session.

The treatment takes around 50 minutes, with approximately

examining a person’s body language to see how they are feeling.”

If someone does becomes anxious, she will pause the treatment, use light abdominal massage or simply talk things through until they are comfortable to proceed. “Everything is about working to their comfort level. It’s completely personalised to the individual.”

“A colonic helps the whole body, rather than just clearing the bowel” 30 minutes spent on the colonic itself and at least 10 minutes for a guest to relax, in private, afterwards.

Paula says every treatment is tailored to the individual, with the pace and pressure adjusted according to how a guest is responding.

“I want to make people aware that a colonic helps the whole body, rather than just clearing the bowel,” she says.

One of the biggest misconceptions Paula says she frequently encounters, is that colonics are only for people experiencing constipation or bloating.

Another is that a colonic is an aggressive or uncomfortable procedure. “People might have had an enema or colonoscopy in the past, which can be quite an uncomfortable procedure, and they think it’s going to be the same,” she explains, “but a colonic is a very, very gentle process.”

She adds that some guests worry that the treatment will disrupt their gut microbiome, although the procedure does not reach the small intestine, where much of the body’s absorption of nutrients and good bacteria takes place.

THE BOTTOM LINE So, what do guests say after having a colonic?

Paula regularly hears that people feel ‘lighter and brighter’, while some report feeling less bloated and far more aware of their digestive habits.

Ultimately, however, she believes the biggest benefit of a colonic as part of the retreat experience is giving people permission to focus on themselves, both inside and out.

“Many of us are good at putting make-up on, doing our hair and ensuring that when we look in the mirror we’re happy with what we see,” she says.

“But few of us look at what’s going on inside.

Ironically, the bloating and inflammation we may feel, but ignore, is affecting how we look and feel most.”
