A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, In 2021 The Source celebrated 26 years of service to our community. While we began as a place that offered emergency meals to those in need, we’ve grown to take a broader view of ending homelessness in our community. Through expanded services, a wider reach and an unwavering commitment to developing and operating programs and services with greater impact, we now offer life-changing opportunities to homeless individuals in Indian River County and beyond. This year we have added a second Dignity Bus to serve individuals in Brevard County, Dignity Smiles Dental Restoration, Dignity Job Opportunities with Sic Sac, a second food truck, and lastly Dignity Village. In the pages that follow you will read about important programs and services, as well as plans for the future and the impact we are having on individuals whose lives have unraveled resulting in homelessness. This impact could not have been accomplished without you, our generous donors, partners and volunteers. As you read through this report we hope you will feel good about, and take pride in the work we are doing to help the homeless and poor get back on their feet. Our Impact Twenty-six years ago The Source, a trusted symbol of hope for the poor and homeless, was created in response to the area’s growing homeless population. Today, with an expanded mission and progressive programs, we are an innovator in transforming lives. Our programs help clients become more selfsufficient and lead productive lives. The Source is committed to providing hope for individuals who are in need of a wide range of support services. We assist individuals to achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency and lead more fulfilling lives.

Dignity Food Trucks offers students hands-on experience to use their culinary training skills. The food trucks are geared to selling award-winning food at community events, in response to natural disasters (food relief) with madeto-order foods at specific locations and routine stops. With two food trucks in operation, culinary students receive additional training and gain confidence working with the public.
Dignity Catering provides a catering service to local businesses, schools, churches and/or events. A daily menu is available, or one can be created specifically for private functions or event planning. Culinary students gain first-hand training while interacting with the public.
Dignity Smiles provides free dental restoration to eligible Dining with Dignity graduates. Proper dentistry makes a difference with their confidence and employability. The Source partners with Dr. Sadesh Kumar, founder of Wickham Dental Care in Melbourne, FL. Dignity Smiles allows our members to smile again.
G R O A R MS P Dining with Dignity is a 6-, 12- or 18-week professional program, recognized by The American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF) for delivering high standards in culinary arts education. This program offers students the opportunity to learn culinary skills and prepare them for employment in the food serve industry
Dignity Bus is the first-of-its-kind in the country, an overnight emergency shelter available 365 days a year. The Vero Beach bus offers 20 climate-controlled sleeping pods. A second bus located in Brevard County (Palm Bay) offers 16 sleeping pods. The buses are available 7 nights a week. The buses provide security, comfort, and a safe environment for individuals to get a restful night’s sleep.
Dignity Jobs offer members the opportunity to gain employment experience and a dignified income. With the guidance of our employment specialist, The Source partners with B.E. Princess, Inc. a private and corporate aviation supplier, who provides on board supplies and accessories to aviation companies around the country. Our members assemble Sic Sac® Motion Sickness Bags and earn a dignified income while feeling productive and appreciated.
Dignity Village was purchased in December 2021 and is currently under renovation. Once the village is operational, 19 units will be available to individuals and families. The village will be a self-contained community offering housing, a chapel, outdoor dining, and activities.

Two Lives Changed With A New Smile • Brigette now has a full-time job at a local restaurant. • Scott was able to confidently smile again for the first time in 40+ years.
150 Lives Uplifted With Free Mental Health Care • Low barrier service model through Harm Reduction and Trauma Informed Care • Placed 2 members in sober living facilities. • Referred 25 members to community agencies for intensive outpatient services, senior housing and medication management.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS For some their struggles began years ago while others are more recent, but all found it difficult to change without help from The Source. Now self-destructive thoughts are turned into plans for the future. Looking back on their days of living on the streets they recall, “It’s wretched. You disconnect from everything.” The Source became a foundation for these individuals and others as staff members worked together to stabilize their condition and change the trajectory of their lives. We aggressively advocated on their behalf for ID’s, birth certificates, health care, jobs, housing, dental care and other community services. The road ahead for these individuals will be challenging, but they remain highly motivated and confident that they will succeed at their goals of building a healthier, sober and fulfilling life.
Meet Antonio Antonio went from a happy childhood to a rocky period in his life when he fathered a child with a girlfriend and then dropped out of school to support them. Subsequently he got involved with the wrong crowd that led him to using drugs and becoming homeless. Once he discovered The Source, he began training as a student in the Dignity Foods program, cooking on the Dignity Food Truck and obtaining skills necessary for finding a job. He has now reunited with his Alabama family and has obtained a job as a manager at a local food chain.
Meet Krystal With her mother on drugs and her dad deceased, Krystal grew up in foster care and after high school, Krystal gave birth to a daughter, now seven. She never stopped dreaming of becoming educated and bettering herself, thus moved to Orlando to attend college and obtain a job to support them both. When COVID forced her to lose it all and she became homeless, she found The Source. Following her tenure in the Dining with Dignity program and working on the food truck, The Source guided her to a qualified job that has enabled her to work full time, find a home and enjoy her new car gifted from a Source benefactor!
Meet Jason In the case of Dining with Dignity student Jason Spiegel, the third time, is truly the charm. Jason joined the Dining with Dignity Culinary Training program two times before and was not able to see it through until now. He overcame his struggles with addiction and graduated with his state required ServSave Food Handler Certificate, a job as a cook at a local Vero Beach restaurant, and has since been housed. Jason stays busy as one of the top cooks at his place of employment. After 44 years of life lessons, 8 of which he has been homeless, Jason is finally learning to put himself first. He believes that if it weren’t for the support of the staff and volunteers at The Source believing in him every time he joined, without judgement, he probably wouldn’t have made this transformation on his own.

Night OF Hope
Summary of Major Accomplishments 2020-2021 The Source was a recipient of an IMPACT 100 Grant Award. Amid Covid-19 The Source implemented new Dignity programs such as our Dignity Food Truck and Dignity Bus. The Dignity Catering program obtained a State of Florida catering license. We received recognition from The American Culinary Federation Education Foundation highlighting The Source’s Dining with Dignity program for delivering high stands in culinary arts education. The Source received a proclamation by Indian River County Commissioners for the positive and untiring work contributed for homeless awareness and services provided. The Dignity Bus provided 3,600 safe sleeps with the ability to provide overnight shelter for 7,300 individuals Our new Dignity Baking program offers additional training for our culinary students; desserts are provided for our catering and food truck events. The Source teamed up with prominent dentist Dr. Sadesh Kumar, in Melbourne, offering our members dental procedures free of charge Dignified Income hired members of The Source to assemble Sic Sac Motion Sickness Bags, each member is paid according to how many boxes are completed and this provides steady income for our participants.
