Barreteria Obach from Barcelona is an establishment founded

by Ramon Obach specialized in hats and berets since 1924. This craft business is located on the corner of Call street with Banys Nous street. It is an indissoluble part of the historic and social framework of the neighborhood with a traditional character currently run by the fourth generation of the family that stands out for its close and personalized treatment.

Obach needs, after so long, a new space in which to develop his business and change scenery. This space is located in the Barcelona neighborhood of GrĂ cia, specifically in Berga street number 40.

This is a neighborhood that opens its streets and squares to multiculturalism, to the most cosmopolitan artists, to music, theater and cinema but without losing the essence of a proud and different people who assert their past. This new location gives a second life to the business, which needs a re-launch of its brand, working graphic, product and space. This project unites these three fields to create a space tailored to its needs and the client’s ones to attract a new target that can revive the essence of this memorable establishment in Barcelona.

Hats have always been a constant baseline of the fashion industry. Headwear began in earnest during the Middle Ages when the church decreed that women’s hair must be covered, and throughout history, it has been a symbol of status.

The popularity of wearing hats decreased post war 1940’s and 1950’s. To preserve the market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Today we see a revival. The art of millinery has been redefined with wit and emotion; modern designs are the bold expression of a new generation.

Elegance remains, but has become colored with soul and vitality. The rich variety of styles available to the modern hat-lover is evidence of this.

There is a sense of practicality with hats; which can accentuate your face, hide a bad hair day or protect from the elements when it is cold or raining. The British designer, Harvy Santos, explains the appeal of the hats – “Can you imagine a martini without the olive or an ice cream sundae without that cherry?” No matter what imaginative style best brings out your own style, the contemporary hat is a great way to stand and find your own voice.

Elegance has to do with a way of facing the world, of acting, of showing oneself and making oneself seen. Obach building a new atmosphere that accomplices the glamor that Barcelona nights needed, creating a unique space for the most elegant and exclusive men and women. As benchmarks, the ones selected were no less than cocktail bars such as “il Giardinetto” in Barcelona or the Museo Chicote in Madrid.

But what do these spaces have in common? The answer lies in the etymology of the word Glamour.

This comes from the Scottish word <glamor>, which would mean “spell”. Whenever we choose a cocktail or a hat, not only a drink or a product is chosen; we are as well selecting an experience that defines our personality and how our experience is: elegant, wild, exclusive ...

For this reason, a space where the hats and cocktails are merged is designed, a unique space, Obach.

For the new redesign of obach, two concepts have been merged. The hats and the cocktails. It is interesting the connections of these two words, in terms of sensations come from the same language. They have mixed these two concepts to attract a specific audience and show hats in a more seductive way. In this way, we mix the best of both areas. We started with the sale and exhibition of hats and decided to link it with the mystery and elegance of a club.

Create a community It is the main objective of Obach, to create a club of the hat. People who wish may enter this establishment with a hat and exchange opinions as well as purchase this product.

We have thought of people who love hats and we want there to be a feeling of community, related to the hat.

The graphic of this project has a direct link between space, product and the main element, the hat.

The rounded shapes of the base pattern refer to the hat cup and the straight lines on the wing. It is joined to space following the same structure as the second exterior faรงade, and at the same time the product when playing with the linear forms. graphic 24

The chromatic range is extracted from the sensations and materials of space. The green bottle is the mystery and elegance, the red tile is the tranquility and nostalgia of the atmosphere, the palate is gentleness and delicacy, and the beige colour is warmth and comfort.

The logo was created using a “art decó” typography, this font is “Tropical Tourist”. The “o”, the “B” and the “C” have been adapted to better adjust the fullness and emptiness of the logo.

We have created a space that combines two activities: the sale of hats and a cocktail bar. It is a place with three different direct accesses to the street.

Obach is the name of this business. Obach is elegance, mystery, and delicacy. The space consists of a single floor where all the activity takes place. Upon entering we find chairs, tables, and sofas where customers can sit and have a good time. Just above this first part, we have hats that hang from the ceiling, modulating the space and creating a more comfortable and cozy area. Then we find a large bar where the waiters serve the drinks and also show you the hats you are interested in. Just behind the bar, there is a large wall as the central element of the space where the hats are exposed and a set of compositions is created with the light and hats exposed. In this way, both the customers who are seated at the tables and those who are in the tambourines of the bar can always see the hats representative of Obach.

A second facade is placed in the space, it is a lighter and structural than the existing one. In this case, an interesting effect has been achieved, from the outside, you perceive a lower height than there really is, when you enter the room you realize that the space is higher than it seems. On the other hand, we have achieved a small space between the facades, a small terrace so that customers can be before entering or a space for smokers.

In this space people are allowed to enter with a hat if they wish. The space is conditioned to it, the tables have lighting so that the brim of the hat does not provide shade. We have thought about the people who love hats and we want them to feel privileged.

Obach is a hat club, a place where people can wear a hat inside. A place to exchange opinions and drinks.

A place to be.

This wall, in addition to housing the hats, functions as storage of the products sold or simply cleaning products, etc. It also has three uses: to give visibility and monumentality to the hats, store products and a transition zone between the bathrooms and the club area. The bathrooms are located behind this module, accessed from the sides.

Starting from the imaginary of art deco, the elements of their language that we liked the most were chosen and investigated to find a code of their own that would be embodied in the atmosphere of the space.

Below are some referents that have been used throughout the design process of the furniture, each with different characteristics: on the one hand there is a big reference on bending tubes, on the other hand, the contrast of shapes, volumes and colors has been approached as well. In both cases, the geometry has been a key element to give continuity to the different elements of the space.

IN THE MAKING

For the realization of the models at scale 1:5, some molds were created to bend the aluminum (4mm in diameter). Due to the difficulty of achieving the desired radios, some other technical alternatives were looked at. We got a 10 mm diameter rod that created the inside radius of the piece. On the other hand, since the piece turned the radius in many directions, the rod was curved flat and finally, bent the piece in parts.

However, to look for alternatives to tube bending, printing in 3D was carried out on the same scale as the other models. All the pieces, both aluminum and 3D printed, were sanded, polished and painted afterwards.

MATERIALS

To understand the selection of materials we must go back to the moodboard of sensations that had been conceived at the beginning. It spread out ideas about the sensations that the place needed to capture and forms from which textures, volumes, colors and materials were extracted.

It was notorious that the velvet fabric was a key component for its texture and for what it says about the environment and thus, the seat of the stool is a cushion covered with this tile red fabric, which is part of our chromatic range and at the same time creates contrast with its environment. For the structure, a chromed stainless steel has been chosen in old gold since other types of metal would have given the design an unwanted industrial aspect and, specifically, the old gold transmits what Obach is looking for. Finally, the use of marble is closely linked to that gold color and its message. In this case, a thin layer is used as a light screen on the tables that accompany the stools.

MESA OBACH A hat shop and cocktail bar; Obach is a space where two enigmatic worlds meet together. In this place, light plays a very important role creating mystery in the shadows and discoveries in the light.Thus, Obach table will be another key element in this game of light and shadows.

Round coffee table with an illuminated polished marble board.

The board is wrapped in a golden chromed finish steel profile, similar to the tubular structure that forms the table’s legs.

Obach table is composed of two parts: a board and a tubular structure.

Board: the light system of LEDs that illuminates the white marble plate is located under the board. It can be divided into an internal and an external structure. In the internal part, there is the light system, consisting of a casing that contains the strip of LEDs and a screen that homogenizes the light projected on the marble plate. On the other hand, the external part is composed of a translucent marble board with a steel base.

Tubular structure: The legs of the table are composed of three steel tubular “L”s.

The stool is composed of two parts: the tubular structure and the seat.

Tubular structure: formed by a bent tube that shapes the legs of the stool and the backrest. In addition, the tubular structure has two horizontal rods that support the seat underneath.

Seat: The seat has three elements: Filling, cover, and base. The base is the part that is attached to the rods of the tubular structure. The filling which is inside the velvet cover provides comfort.

The stool is composed of three parts: the tubular structure, the footrest, and the seat.

Tubular structure: formed by a bent tube that shapes the legs of the stool and the backrest. In addition, the tubular structure has three rods: two horizontal ones that support the seat and one in the lower part of the structure.

Footrest: lowest rod on the stool created in order to support the feet and provide more stability.

The seat is the same as the one of the Obach stool.
