LIVING ON THE EDGE Fall 2022 USC Graduate Architecture Design II / Instructor: John Southern / Software: Rhino + Enscape

A co-living housing project that is inspired by the sport of rock climbing. The design blurs the boundaries between private and shared spaces in order to increase the interaction between the individuals and also the physical form of building tectonic.

The pods situated on the edge of the structure mimic the human body in relation to the mountain in the sport of rock climbing. The steel framing and the mesh surfaces allow the building to be semi see through, which creates a closer relationship between the interior and the exterior. By limiting each unit to 8’ x 10’, it is a way to encourage the occupants to spend less time in their isolated space and to socialize and connect with the community in the common areas located twoards the center of the whole structure.

MASS-TIMBER TOWER Spring 2023 USC Graduate Architecture Design / Instructor: Gesa Buttner-Dias, Alvin Huang, Olivier Touraine / Software: Rhino + Enscape

Loacted in Chinatown, Los Angeles, the 15-story mass timber tower serves as a social justice center for the community. With the intentional offset massing design, the tower orient towards the futre aerial rapid transit development, providing a clear view to North, East, and South.

OPTIMAL LIVING Fall 2022 USC Graduate Architecture Design II Instructor: John Southern / Software: Rhino + Enscape

This ADU is the new optimal living example.

The bathroom, which is typically seen as a private program and often times gets tucked in the corner when laying out the programs, is now being used as the main bridge to bring together the shared and the private.

On average, the time usage of bathrooms ranges from 1 to 2 hours every day; with a limited amout of space to design, why not optimize the space and make it not only as a bathroom but also the main circulation?

This dessign allows the residents and the visitors to fully utilize the spaces in the house and therefore creating a living space that is being used at its finest.

MOSAIC 2022 USC Architecture Guild Design Charrette Team members: Judy Hsieh, Kristin Garner, Reily Gibson

The goal of this project is to design a facility that initially serves as a community based temporary healthcare pop-up to provide access to Covid-19 testing or vaccination, then design for the ultimate goal for the building or landscape as it will be repurposed into a community amenity for the post-Covid world.

In a team of 3, we collaborated on the design concept, and I produced the modules in rhino while my teamates generated the diagrams and drawings.

JOSHUA TREE VISITOR CENTER Spring 2022 USC Graduate Architecture Design I / Instructor: Gary Paige / Software: Rhino + Photoshop

The visitor center is a pentagonal structure that is slightly elevated on the side that is directly facing the mountains. The building has a corten exterior; together with the pentagon shape, the building stands out in the open and deserted filed.

The interior circulation is limitless because of the fluid open-layout design. Consists of a courtyard, the visitor center is able to echo the oasis located in the near by area.

PARIS NOTRE DAME UNDERGROUND RECONSTRUCTION Summer 2022 USC Advanced Graduate Architecture Design - Topics / Instructor: Eric Haas, Olivier Touraine / Software: Rhino + Enscape + Photoshop Team members: Judy Hsieh, Naira Petrosian, Yushan He

The site area is limited to the west side of the parvis (historical plaza), to the river banks on the south side, and the “rue du Cloitre Notre Dame” on the north. As well as the Hotel Dieu and the public park on the south-east side of the Cathedral. The project consists of two public below-grade level with the first level connecting to the historical crypt and has a direct circulation to the nearest metro station. Both levels are open to public with versitile spaces such as exhibition space, cafe, bookstore, and many seating areas.

In a team of 3, we collaborated on the design concept and built the rhino model.

My teamates produced the renderings and floor plans, while I produced the section and elevation drawings.

Charles Onyari Nyakweba Foundation Hospital Corgan Internship Summer Design Competition / Software: Rhino + Enscape Team members: Bernard Elegado, Judy Hsieh, Kianna Armstrong, Yiting Chen

Our entry for the Charles Omyonga Nyaramba Foundation Hospital draws inspiration from the Acacia tree, offering a dual-purpose facility as both a fully functioning hospital and a community center.

The design maximizes space efficiency on the challenging site, featuring a rooftop community garden with solar canopies and emphasizing community engagement through experiential movement within the building. The hospital, akin to the sturdy Acacia, serves as a grounded yet uplifting canopy, providing healing and a gathering space for the community.

In a team of 4, we collaborated on the design concept and built the rhino model. I produced the sketches and 3 renderings, while my teammates produced the floor plans and the drawings.

60th anniversary jacket logo design for Te-Lung Trading Co., Ltd. in Taipei, Taiwan. 1.18 inch diameter with 0.4 inch openings.

The train symbolizes the high-speed rail, which is the prominent focus of the company.

The finished product is stitched on the upper left arm of the jacket.
