A Message from the

Principal

Dear Judge Memorial – St. Mary’s Community, It is with great joy that we welcome a new set of students into the alumni ranks.

We take pride in honoring these students with a Judge Memorial Catholic High School diploma. As we conclude the year, there are many reasons to be joyous and thankful. Here are a few of the highlights: The Class of 2019 earned nearly $15 million in scholarships and renewable grants, were accepted by over 136 colleges and universities, and will attend 51 colleges or universities in 20 states. Two members of the Class of 2019 were National Merit Scholarship finalists.

The Judge Memorial Robotics Team finished #1 in the state and competed at both the regional and international levels. Our team led the international championships for much of the competition.

Judge Memorial’s girls’ tennis team and boys’ soccer team won back-to back 3A state championships. The boys’ lacrosse team won the state championship as well and the girls’ soccer team was the state runner up.

This was an exciting year in athletics.

Judge Memorial launched our Christ the King Service Day where we donated a day of service to over 40 non-profit organizations. Our students contributed over 27,000 hours of service this year.

Throughout the year we focused on the theme of Bulldog Living! For our students it was creating a home court advantage for them as they navigated their high school year. We took pride in providing a support system around our students that encouraged them to develop grit and resiliency. Students will rise to the expectations that are set and this year was no exception. They rose to the high level of academics we provided and thrived in the healthy learning environment.

Thank you to our incredible teachers that continue to foster a sense of belonging for our students. Over and over this year, students said that they felt loved by our faculty and staff. We take great pride in creating a safe and loving environment for our students. When they feel loved, they feel safe. When they feel safe, they allow themselves to be vulnerable towards learning. This is a unique priority to our school. One that we would say is a special gift, or charism.

Judge Memorial Catholic High School will continue to foster the growth of Cura Personalis within our student body. As we care for the whole person, we look to create a safe place for students to grow academically, socially, physically, and spiritually. We are grateful for our opportunity to positively impact so many lives.

Tom Bettin ‘67 Exhibit at Phllips Gallery In addition to teaching art at Judge Memorial for the last 35+ years, Tom Bettin ‘67 is also a ceramist, graphic designer, and painter. His professional works can be found on display in the main gallery at Phillips Gallery located at 444 E. 200 S. in Salt Lake City. Here are some of his favorite pieces:

First Judge Alumnus Drafted to the NFL Kaden Elliss ‘14 was drafted to the New Orleans Saints in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft. This makes Kaden the first Judge Memorial alumnus to be drafted to the NFL. CONGRATULATIONS! We look forward to watching you in the upcoming NFL season.

PAWPRINTS 1970’s Norm Allred ‘76 is being ordained to the Diaconate for the Diocese of Meath on June 12 at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, Italy.

Matthew L. Jimenez, MD ‘79 was the recent recipient of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Senior Achievement Award. This award recognizes his contributions to education, research, and advocacy in orthopedics.

1980’s Matt Becker ‘84 has joined the Hart Howerton Architectureal & Planning Firm as their Interior Design Leader, where he works the firm’s design teams as a resource and mentor on a variety of project types including Clubs, Hospitality, Institutional, and Residences.

David Dolowitz ‘87 is a professor of politics at the University of Liverpool and recently received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contribution to the field of Public Policy (by Marquis Who’s Who 2017).

Matt Wolfe ‘98 has a very successful real estate buisness and lives in Sandy with his wife of 11 years and four daughters.

He enjoys skiing at Alta Bird and surfing in Costa Rica where they have rental property.

Pete Oswald ‘99 illustrates children’s books in addition to providing character design and art direction in animated films such as The Angry Birds Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, ParaNorman, Hotel Transylvania, and Madagascar: Escape to Africa. Pete’s two children’s books, The Good Egg and The Bad Seed were ranked #1 and #2 this last March on the New York Times Best Seller list.

Nick Tyson ‘99 is a senior animator for Sony Imagesworks new movie SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse.

2000’s Riley Mackin ‘03 worked as a producer on the record “This Is America” by Childish Gambino, which won this year’s Grammy for “Record of the Year.”

James Hensleigh ‘04 married Heiti Sin on June 9, 2018 in Salt Lake City.

They now live in Flagstaff, Arizona. where James is a geographer for the Department of Interior (USGS).

Nick Frappier ‘06 married Kathryn Martinez ‘08 on August 4, 2018 at Wolf Creek Ranch in Utah.

Kristina Struthwolf-Leato ‘06 took first place in the U.S. Figure Skating Adult Nationals Championship where she scored 73.65 with second place being 57.21. This was her first competition since her son was born in January 2018.

Cort Dennison ‘07 was hired as the new Defensive Co-Coordinator for the University of Louisville.

Whitney Wolfe Herd ‘07 was featured in the New York Times article “Whitney Wolfe Herd’s Work Diary: Fighting Misogyny, One Bumble Brand at a Time.”

Matthew Jimenez ‘08 earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling in Colorado and is now a therapist in Salt Lake City. He also recently became engaged to Hillary Dunks from San Diego.

David May ’09 married Hannah Zabka on August 18, 2018 at Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City.

Rachel Gondrezick ’15 has been a member of the Saint Martin’s University Women’s Volleyball Team where she was selected to the 2018 GNAC AllAcademic Team her senior season. She ranks fifth in the school’s history for ‘kills’ (789).

Caroline Holyoak ’15 has been named valedictorian at University of Portland for the 2019 graduating class. Caroline is a double major in English and Spanish.

Connor Morgan ’15 is currently a senior at the University of Utah and was named finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship last fall.

Douglas Gosselin ’16 plays lacrosse for California Polytechnic State University and earned Commanding Performance of the Week for the MCLA Division 1. He scored 10 goals and had three assists in two games against ranked opponents.

Lexi Hoggan ’16 and her TV show “The View From the U” was runner-up for the Most Impact Award. The specific episode that received the award was called “Vote” which helped educate people on the proposed propositions and amendments during the midterm elections.

Danny O'Brien ‘16 has been admitted to the athletic training program at the University of Utah, which is highly selective, admitting only 24 persons from several hundred applicants each year.

Christian Elliss ’17 is a middle linebacker for the University of Idaho and was just selected for the All-Big Sky Conference third-team. He led the team in tackles (81) and recorded double-digit tackles in three games.

Two years ago, the Class of 1987 was able to give the largest class gift in Judge history by rallying their classmates to support Judge in honor of their 30th reunion and say thank you for their high school experience. Last year, the Class of 1988 was also able to give a class gift.
