A Message from the

Principal

Dear Judge Memorial – St. Mary’s Community As I write this, we are coming to the end of another successful year at Judge Memorial. I reflect over the year and find we have much for which to be thankful and those stories are shared with you throughout this Connections publication.

Utah welcomes the tenth bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake, The Most Reverend Bishop Oscar A. Solis. Bishop Solis is dedicated to the extraordinary mission of Catholic schools.

Our students’ successes in academics have been numerous and historical. We had a national merit finalist, who was accepted to the top universities in the nation and will be attending Yale, one student who accepted an appointment to the U.S. Navel Academy, and another student who receive the Daniels Fund Scholarship for Georgetown University, renewable for four years. The students’ hard work has paid off as college acceptances and scholarships were abundant!

Judge girls’ soccer spent time over their Christmas break serving the girls in India, and our Judge Student Reporting Lab for PBS NewsHour visited a national park over President’s Day weekend to report on the impact of tourism on National Parks. Both demonstrate our call to serve.

Alumni returned to Judge Memorial for Career Day where they passed along their knowledge, expertise, and support to inspire our young adults. An alumnus after facing overwhelming obstacles, finished ninth in the Boston Marathon.

The year has also brought with it moments that challenge us as a community. The recent loss of a Judge student and others in our Judge family, push us to the fragile limits of our own resilience. It is through moments like this where the strength of our community assists each of us and the children entrusted in our care to move productively forward.

We are saying goodbye to teachers that have made an impact on generations of students. Pat Clark, Linda Simpson, and Pam Oles will be retiring at the end of the school year. Pat Clark is completing his 48th year of teaching mathematics here at Judge Memorial. Linda Simpson will be retiring from fulltime teaching after 24 years. We are praying for Linda as she continues her valiant fight with cancer. These teachers will always have a home here at Judge Memorial.

I recently receive a letter from a parent, who is also a Judge Memorial alumni, whose kind thoughts during a most difficult time made me aware that through those bitter-sweet moments, we have the most important and wonderful job in the Catholic community: We are all partners building the next generation of future leaders.

Thank you for continuing to care for our Judge Memorial community and all the many ways you support the work we do.

Louise Pezel Hendrickson ‘83 received her master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Creighton University. She was the recipient of the Maurine Hamilton Award which recognizes a female graduate student with outstanding academic record and leadership potential.

Charlie Knuth ‘04 was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests on January 25th, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. The Right Reverend Scott B. Hayashi, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah, presided over the ordination at Trinity Episcopal Church in Folsom, CA, where Knuth serves as Assistant Rector.

Janet Jorgense ‘88 has been named as Publisher of SagaCity’s Park City and Salt Lake City properties, which in addition to Park City Magazine and Salt Lake City/Park City Bride & Groom Magazine, includes Park City Menu Guide, Things to Do, parkcitymag.com, and saltlakebrideandgroom.com.

Stephen Stahl ‘07 & Kelly Frappier ‘08 were married at Heritage Gardens in Sandy, Utah on December 31, 2016.

Kelly Frappier Stahl ‘08 graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine.

From there she will doing her General Surgery Residency at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

John Fassell ‘92 was named interim head coach of the Los Angeles Rams NFL team for the last part of the 2016 season.

Todd Paoletti ‘92 received the Alumni Achievement Award on April 12th from the University of Utah Department of Communication. He was one of two alumni who received this recoginition at the 62nd annual Communication Awards Banquet. Todd is currently the COO and General Manager of Cognizant Accelerator, a Fortune 500 Company. He is married to Jennifer Wilkoff of Brunswick, Maine and they live in Mill Valley, California with their two daughters, Ada, 7 & Hazel, 5.

2010’s Olivia Shaughnessey ‘10 is a student of the S.J Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah and the executive Articles Editor of the Utah law Review in addition to a recent finalist in the Traynor Moot Court Competition and a member of the national moot court team.

Anthony Oyler ‘11 graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in mechnical engineering and political science. He has been accepted to the Massachusetts Institute for Technology for his masters degree.

Aidan Larson ‘16, a freshman attackman for the University of Montana Grizzlies lacrosse team was second in total points and the recipient of the best offense award for the 2017 regular season.

Aidan had 34 goals, 19 assists and picked up 51 ground balls.

Kelsin Pupunu ‘16 and Ben Jones ‘16 are current members of the University of Utah Rugby Team.

Louis Francone ‘13 graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Anselm College in Theology.

Eric Larson ‘13 plays lacrosse for the University of Montana Grizzlies. At the end of the 2017 regular season, Eric received the team MVP award for the second consecutive year.

Eric is a four year starter and four year total points leader for the Grizzlies. In the 2017 regular season, Eric had 65 goals and 33 assists. His 98 total points was a record for a single season. In addition, Eric is the all time scoring leader in program history.

Kendrick Nafus ‘14 added the Inauguration to his list of adventures while at the United States Naval Academy.

CAREER DAY 2017 Judge Memorial hosted a Career Day event on Wednesday, April 5.

During the event, alumni and past parent business leaders were invited to discuss careers within their industry, future job growth and their educational path. Current juniors and seniors attended a variety of career sessions and learned more about what it takes to be an anesthesiologist, lawyer, engineer, physical therapist, architect, firefighter, psychologist, etc. We appreciate all those who took time out of their busy day to help our students consider a variety of career paths. Bishop Solis: The least favorite thing is the cold weather. I’m a fair-weather person, so I don’t like the cold. The cold was rough at first but now I’m enjoying it. I’ve been to Snowbird and Park City, and those places are much nicer to me now.

I’m enjoying the hospitality of the people, which is amazing. I feel so welcomed by the people of Utah.

And in the two months that I have been here I really do feel like I’m at home.

FD: What challenges do you see for the Catholic faith in Utah and what are your top priorities?

Bishop Solis: It’s too early for me to really say, but what I envision is trying to generate some sort of a revival or rebirth in the life of the people. That is why I wrote a pastoral letter during Easter pushing for a springtime in the New Evangelization. I would like to see the Catholic Church in Utah moving ahead from maintenance to where we become missionary disciples. In order to be able to do that we should generate enthusiasm and excitement about living our faith. That is what I envision: to be able to bring the joy of being Catholic and believing in God. Hopefully that will be infectious; it

- Judge Student Reporting Lab

Judge Memorial Catholic High School was selected to be a PBS NewsHour STEM Student Reporting Lab again for the 2016-17 school year.

This year, in honor of the National Park Service’s 100th Anniversary, all STEM Labs headed to their local National Parks to produce unique stories from America’s canyons, craters, and mountain peaks. Students in the New Media class at Judge collaborated on a series of stories about the impact that increased tourism is having on Zion National Park. Last year, the class produced stories for NewsHour about air quality in the Salt Lake Valley.

The PBS NewsHour’s STEM Student Reporting Lab program trains high school students in video journalism. The initiative is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Over President’s Day weekend, the Bulldog Press took a road trip to Zion National Park as part of their work as a Student Reporting Lab sponsored by PBS NewsHour. The staffers split up into teams that focused on the impact record-breaking attendance is having on the park. The group looked at park safety, flash floods, vandalism, pollution, and the notorious invasive species, cheatgrass.

Goals for Girls

- Judge Girls Soccer Players in India

This organization uses soccer to teach young women life skills on how to be agents of change in their lives and communities.
