A Message from the

Principal

To our Judge Memorial and Saint Mary’s family, How will we know we made a difference?

Early this year we gathered as a faculty and staff to focus on our mission and goals for the year. Through the lively discussion, our attention was brought to the last line of our Philosophy Statement. “In our safe, caring, respectful environment, students are empowered to become builders of a more just society.”

A Judge Memorial education is not merely learning academic and social lessons at the school but instead doing something with those lessons to make our society a better place. We lift our horizon from simply getting a great education to doing something positive with it. As current senior, Erica Strand stated in a recent interview, “Judge has always pushed me to think about those in the world around me, I have received the gift of a fantastic education, and I have no intention of letting it go to waste.”

We just recently completed our second annual Christ the King Service Day where we poured out into the community and volunteered at 30 different nonprofit organizations. The nonprofits told their stories and welcomed us into their mission. This is a wonderful day where we truly see faith in action. May we continue to foster the empathetic growth within our students that is so needed today.

On behalf of our students, we thank you for your support, your generosity, and your engagement.

Our community stretches beyond the simple confines of the four years of high school. The Judge Memorial community is before, during, and after high school. By volunteering at the school, attending our events, providing financial support, and offering of prayers, your support reinforces our faith in this beautiful mission. It is this backing, this connection, and this love from your home to our classrooms that we celebrate the great tradition that is Judge Memorial Catholic High School.

Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald ‘54, the diocese’s Vicar General Emeritus, was honored October 30 with the Lifetime of Services award during the Catholic Community Services annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Salt Lake City in 1962, Msgr. Fitzgerald has held every major administrative position in the local church.

James Merendino ‘85, who directed the cult classic film SLC Punk!, returned to Utah in September for the 20-year anniversary screening at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. This iconic punk film was an official selection at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

1970s Norm Allred '76 is now a Deacon for the Diocese of Meath in Mulligar, Ireland.

Sisters Judy Schovaers Green ‘78 and Barbara Schovaers ‘81 recently opened an exciting and fun art/gift gallery in Sugar House. Tallulah Gallery offers uncommon gifts of vast mediums by local artists and artisans around the world.

Paul Burke ‘89 is one the subjects depicted in a new Lifetime movie, Trapped. The Alex Cooper Story. Burke, who was the attorney representing Cooper, helped orchestrate her escape after she was trapped against her will in a conversion therapy home in Utah. Based on a harrowing true story, the teen was placed in conversion therapy after revealing she was gay to her devout Mormon parents. In addition, Burke was also named Lawyer of the Year by the Utah Bar Commission this year.

2nd Annual Christ the King Day of Service The second annual Christ the King Day of Service took place on Thursday, November 21. Nearly 700 students, faculty, staff and parents volunteered for a diverse variety of community projects. This year’s day of service was coordinated by the students in the Peer Ministry class, under the guidance of our Campus Minister, Mrs. Celina Poppe. Each student and faculty member worked together to brainstorm where they would like to serve, how they could further support that organization, and what the day would look like.
