Use Your IRA to Support Causes Important to You Your individual retirement account (IRA) is an excellent tool for saving for your retirement yearts. Even better it’s an extremely easy way to support the causes that matter most to you. And once you are retired, your IRA is an easy, worry-free way to support Judge Memorial.

If you are between 59 1/2 and 70 1/2 Once you hit 59 1/2, you may begin taking money out of your IRA without paying a penalty. You’ll pay income tax on the amount you decide to withdraw, even if you use this money to make a gift to Judge Memorial. But if you itemize your tax deductions, you are eligible to take an income tax charitable deduction for the full value of the gift, reducing your overall tax bill.

If you are 70 1/2 or older Now you must begin taking the required minimum distribution from your IRA. Principal

Dear Judge Memorial - St. Mary’s Community, It is with great joy that we continue to foster the connection between our alumni and our current faculty, staff, and students here at Judge Memorial Catholic High School. These connections to our alumni are a healthy reminder of the importance of Catholic education. We will continue to carry the banner as we open doors for our students and foster growth in their spirits and minds.

As we drive forward we are reminded of the vision and knowledge of the past. Let us reminisce of the vision that Mary Judge had when she created the Miner’s hospital in honor of her husband, John, and his coworkers. She then transformed the hospital into a school that would affect hundreds of thousands of lives. Both Mary and John are beautiful examples of servant leadership. This type of leadership is one that demonstrates faith in action. As we continue to keep the vision of the Judge family alive, let us lead through example as we provide the best education for the students entrusted in our care.

We continue to focus on the why? Why is it that Catholic education is so important to a developing child?

Why is Judge Memorial worth the investment? Judge Memorial Catholic High School was created as a place to welcome students of all backgrounds. It was created to empower students and unlock doors. By focusing on the Cura Personalis, or care for the whole person, we challenge our students to lead with their hearts along with their minds. The development of a child’s conscience is as important as the development of their academic skills. By focusing on the whole child we are able to help in the development of conscientious responsible world citizens that are empowered to be the change they want to see in the world.

Alumni Alliance Advisory Board Become a Member...It’s FREE! We are looking for new members for our Alumni Alliance Advisory Board. Becoming a member is easy and free - there are no dues for joining – although we won’t mind if you decide to make a voluntary donation.

The only requirement is that you must be an alumnus of St. Mary of the Wasatch or Judge Memorial. Elizabeth is the Patient Outreach Coordinator at the University of Utah Hospital.

Rosie Banchero ‘88 of Wofa Afro-fusion Dance, Fara Tolno from Kissidugu Foundation, and drummer David Hermann, visited Judge and taught current students the Soko rhythm of Guiean African dance.

Paul Burke ‘89 was featured in a recent article in the Intermountain Catholic: “Utah Catholic Schools alumni: Parochial education gives solid foundation for careers, life.”

1990’s Todd Paoletti ‘92, COO and General Manager of Cognizant Accelerator Company, was recently shown on a billboard in New York’s Times Square to celebrate his company’s 20th anniversary.

Luis Lovato ‘94, a Sargent with the Unified Police Department, was named the Robert J. O’Neil Outstanding Police Officer of the Year by Footprinters. As part of his award Luis was recognized for his special relationship with his canine police partner, Aldo, who tragically died in the line of duty last April.

Nicholas Pope ‘99 received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812).

2000’s Cort Dennison ‘07 was featured in an online article from 247Sports titled “Louisville’s Dennison on the fast track.” Cort, who is now Louisville’s linebackers coach, led the Pac 12 in tackles his senior year at Washington State. He is also currently the recruiting coordinator and one of the special teams coordinators for the Cardinals.

Annie Paul ‘07 married Christopher Murphy on September 16 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Whitney Wolfe ’07 married Michael Herd on September 2 in Positano, Italy. She is the founder and CEO of Bumble and the cofounder of Tinder.

Luke Puskedra ‘08 finished 11th overall in the QuadCity Times Bix 7 run in Davenport, Iowa with a time of 34:26. He was featured in the article in the Quad-City Times, “Puskedra Stands Tall Despite the Obstacles.”

2010’s Christian Barbiero ‘10 graduated from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law and recently passed the Utah State Bar Exam. He was sworn into the Utah State Bar and the Utah Supreme Court this last October.

Jake Winter ‘11 was recognized as the Guadalupe School’s volunteer of the year last August. The announcement was made at the Rio Tinto Stadium during a REAL Salt Lake game. Since 2012, Jake has volunteered each week with the Guadalupe School’s Adult Education Program teaching English to adults.

Megan O’Brien ‘13 signed her first professional dance contract as a guest artist with Salt Lake City’s Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT).

Grace Nakamura ‘16 played on the 2016-17 Westminster College Women’s Golf Team and recently aced a hole-inone at Mountain Dell Lake course, Hole #9, 164 yds with a 5-hybrid.

Will Ryan ‘16 was inducted into the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis on June 29.

Amelia Wright ‘13 graduated Magna Cum Laude from Gonzaga University in May. She has recently accepted a position with the Pacific Northwest Ballet Company in Seattle, working in the Marketing /Customer and Patron Relations Department.

Kaden Elliss ‘14, a member of the Idaho State Vandals Football team, has been recognized for his outstanding work both on and off the field as a member for the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

The Wuerffel Trophy is known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service.”

Mary Oliver ‘17 was featured in a PBS Student Reporting Lab video: “Students Share Why SRL Matters,” where SRL students reflect on their experience with Student Reporting Labs. Mary was one of 20 nationally selected students who traveled to Washington, D.C. over the summer to attend PBS NewsHour’s annual Student Reporting Labs Academy.

2018 National Merit Scholarship Program The National Merit® Scholarship Program began in 1955. Approximately 1.6 million high school students annually enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT ®). Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. These high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. THREE Judge Memorial students have qualified for this honor.

Eric Hall ‘18 has qualified as a Semifinalist and will advance in the competition. Semifinalists account for about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers. Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements to be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship. In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. Good luck Eric as you advance through this competition.

Logan Seat ‘18 and Alexander Junkins ‘18 were recognized as Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students, account for more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT ® and were presented with Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Congratulations to the Class of 2017 for EXCEEDING both the national and state average ACT Composite Scores.

Fall Sports Wrap Up Boys and Girls Cross Country teams competed in the UHSAA State Championship meet. The girls’ team finished in 3rd place and the boys’ team finished in 11th place. First Team All-State Honors were given to Madi Tartaro ‘20, who finished in 4th place overall. Second Team All-State Honors were given to Maddie Bossarte ‘20 who finished in 11th place overall.

Girls Soccer was seeking its fourth state title and first since 2007. The Bulldogs took second place when Morgan defeated them 4-1 to win the 3A title.

Girls Volleyball qualified for the UHSAA State Tournament and advanced to the Quarterfinals.

Football finished their season 4-6 and advanced to the first round of the playoffs and where they fell to Manti.

Boys Golf qualified for the second day of the State Tournament for the first time in eight years.

Girls Tennis UHSAA 3A State Championship! Judge finished with a total of 17 points beating Grantsville by ONE point.

Girls Volleyball Giving Back

The 2017 Judge Volleyball team was doing a lot more than working on their sets and spikes this season. At one of the home games in early October, the team raised money to help families in Houston who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. ​The team was able to connect with two other Catholic schools in the Houston area, St. Pius X High School and St. John Paul II School. Over 50 families from the two schools suffered great losses during the Houston floods. A number of the students and parents were displaced, and most were in need of money for clothing, food, and tuition assistance.
