Judge Memorial Catholic High School 2019-2020 SNAPSHOT (compiled in early April results from Spring Performing Arts/Sports Season pending)
• One senior was named a National Merit Finalist. • The Robotics Team was a quarterfinalist at the Utah Regional FIRST Robotics Competition and received the Utah Regional Woodie Flowers Award.
• School-wide service day on November 21st, Christ the King Service Day, students and faculty volunteered at 35 organizations. • Girls’ Tennis Team won the 3A Region Championship and took second in the State Tournament.
• Literary Magazine received an ‘Superior’ ranking from the National Council of Teachers of English.
• Girls Soccer finished second place in the 3A State Tournament.
• Judge Dance raised $750 from their Winter Dance Concert proceeds to benefit Utah veterans.
• Boys Golf won the 3A Region Championship and took second in the State Tournament.
• Judge Theatre and Performing Arts’ production of Side Show had the privilege to be remounted and performed for the Utah Theatre Association conference in January where students from across the state were able to see it.
• Boys Basketball won the 3A Region Championship and finished fourth in the State Tournament.
• The Judge Jazz Band performed in the Region Jazz Band Festival and earned an Superior rating and qualified for state.
• Girls Swimming won the 3A Region Championship and finished fifth in the State Championship.
• One student received a Superior rating at the Region Solo and Ensemble Festival for their harp performance.
• Boys Swimming took second in the 3A Region Championship and second place in the State Tournament.
• Two seniors were named Salt Lake Exchange Club’s “Youth of the Year.” One of them won the Rocky Mountain District competition and is going to nationals.
• Six student athletes were awarded with Academic All-State honors.
• The Interact Club and Campus Ministry together raised $3,900 for St. Vincent de Paul - Vinnie’s of Australia to help with the cost of wildfire relief. • Students donated over 25,700 hours of service completing service projects and fundraisers locally for over 150 organizations and agencies.
• Girls Basketball won the 3A Region Championship and finished second in the State Tournament.
• Over 24 student athletes have been honored by the media (Salt LakeTribune & Deseret News)

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Judge Memorial Catholic High School, it is our great pleasure to have you join us as we recognize outstanding achievements in academics, activities, athletics, and service by our students for the 2019-2020 school year. Our students are incredibly gifted in and out of the classroom, and events such as the Annual Awards Celebration provide the opportunity to celebrate the talents, skills, creativity, and generosity they exhibit every day. Excellence. Tradition. Service. Faith. All of those combine to make Judge Memorial a remarkable school. From the opening of its doors in 1921, Judge Memorial has exemplified academic excellence. Our graduates go on to matriculate at many of the country’s most respected colleges and universities each year. Our tradition is evident as you walk through our halls and speak with members of our community. It is important for our alumni to know that Judge Memorial students of today do have a sense of the significance of what it means to be part of the Judge Community, a part of the continuity and tradition that has gone before them. And one of our great traditions is that of service to others. The Judge Memorial faculty and staff encourage a spirit of volunteerism ~ of giving back ~ among the students. As you would expect from our student body, they have embraced that spirit by their volunteer work within the school, throughout the Diocese, across the Salt Lake Valley, and stretching all over the country and the world. Excellence. Tradition. Service. Faith. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate our students for embracing these ideals.

At Judge Memorial, we value our activities and athletics program as an extension of our formal curriculum, providing students with opportunities to pursue their interests while interacting with other students who share those same interests. We believe strongly that involvement in activities, athletics, and service teaches self-respect and respect for others. This involvement builds self-confidence, helps students recognize and develop their God-given talents, and opens their eyes to the greater world around them. As a faculty and staff, we work tirelessly to provide experiences and opportunities for our students that challenge them, as we believe it is our responsibility to build champions both in and out of the classroom. This unique Judge experience gives students the chance to develop integrity, sportsmanship, and compassion. We are very proud of our students, and we thank you for joining us as we gather as a community to celebrate their accomplishments.

THE DEMI CANDELARIA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Demi Candelaria Scholarship Award was created in memory of Demi Candelaria, who died tragically in December 2003. An alumna of Kearns-Saint Ann Catholic School, Demi was a sophomore at Judge Memorial at the time of her passing. Demi excelled in academics as an honor student at Judge, and was a member of the two-time state championship soccer team and captain of the Lady Bulldog basketball team. She exemplified outstanding student-athlete traits while attending Judge, including dedication, perseverance and spirit. The Demi Candelaria Scholarship supports Judge Memorial female student-athletes, basketball and/or soccer, for equipment purchase, attendance at camps, team trips or to help pay for their education while attending Judge.
THE ALUMNI ALLIANCE SCHOLARSHIP Following the 20th reunion of the Judge Memorial Catholic High School Class of 1984, three alumni – Jesse Stuart ‘84, Liz Lockette ‘84, and Dan Beck (Eichwald) ‘85 – teamed up to launch a permanent scholarship endowment fund for future Judge students. The trio considered giving an obligation, based on the value of a Judge education. The Alumni Alliance Scholarship is awarded each year in the late spring. The selection team considers the academic promise and financial needs of qualified students in selecting a recipient.
MONSIGNOR J. TERRENCE FITZGERALD ’54 CHAMPION OF YOUTH AWARD Outstanding Contribution to the Youth of Judge Memorial This award is presented in honor of Monsignor Fitzgerald’s lifelong support of the Catholic youth of the Diocese of Salt Lake City and his immeasurable support of Judge Memorial Catholic High School. The naming of this award recognizes his outstanding and valuable contributions to Judge Memorial and to the greater community. Much like Monsignor Fitzgerald, countless supporters have contributed in myriad ways over the decades to hundreds of students, allowing them the opportunity to attend and succeed at Judge Memorial. While their efforts go largely unheralded, at their wish, the only concern of these contributors is the young people they can help. This award honors those who give of their time, talent and treasure, and from the heart, to make a difference in the lives of young people. The Champion of Youth Award is presented to remind future generations of Bulldogs of the value so many place on a Catholic education … a Judge education. This award has been known by numerous names over the decades, most recently as the Richard Schubach Champion of Youth Award.
CONGREGATION OF THE SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS AWARD Most Inspirational Participants in Activities and in Athletics This award is presented in appreciation and honor of the inspirational work the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross have done past and present for the Catholic Church throughout the world and, in Utah, through Holy Cross Ministries and in Utah Catholic Schools. The Holy Cross Sisters are an integral part of St. Mary of the Wasatch-Judge Memorial history. Indeed, we are who we are because of the Holy Cross Sisters. This Most Inspirational Award honors those students who exemplify the Sisters’ gifts to us of perseverance, unselfishness, and love for Judge Memorial. This award has been known by numerous names over the decades, most recently as the Sister Louise Marie and the Sonny Tangaro Most Inspirational Awards.
VICAR GENERAL OF THE DIOCESE OF SALT LAKE CITY AWARD Most Valuable Participants in Activities and in Athletics
This award is presented to recognize the valuable work done by the Office of the Vicar General of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. The vicar general is appointed by the diocesan bishop to assist in the governance of the faithful entrusted to his care. The duties of this office are large in scope, requiring someone who is a person of integrity and prudence, committed to advancing the mission of the diocese. Likewise, this Most Valuable Participant Award honors those students who exemplify exceptional initiative, teamwork, and enthusiasm for Judge Memorial. This award has been known by numerous names over the decades, most recently as the Gary Barber and the Monsignor J. Terrence Fitzgerald Most Valuable Awards.
THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AWARDS YERKOVICH AWARD: Basketball & Commitment to “WE” In 1980, when the Bulldogs won the 3A basketball title, the first of three State titles Coach Jim Yerkovich would earn, the Knights of Columbus decided to present a member of the boys’ basketball team with an award named in his honor. Coach Yerk coached for 44 years, amassed 634 wins, led his team to 38 State tournaments and 16 Region championships, and was invited to participate in the prestigious national ACIT tourney 13 times. In 2017, Judge Memorial’s gym was named the Coach Yerkovich Gymnasium. The Yerkovich Award is presented to that player who symbolizes total excellence as a basketball player and a student athlete, characterized by a commitment to the team philosophy of “WE.”
PIERCE AWARD: Outstanding Female Athlete Marjorie Pierce taught at Judge Memorial and St. Mary’s of the Wasatch for over 20 years. Ma Pierce, as her students affectionately called her, was a great teacher. She also initiated and sponsored many women’s sports in the Catholic Schools system. Marjorie Pierce was a champion for women’s sports long before it was fashionable to be one. She recognized the importance of sports and fitness for all girls, knowing that sports participation would led to increased academic performance and self-confidence and, ultimately, give girls the tools needed to become tomorrow’s leaders. Because of her extraordinary, forward-thinking commitment to excellence in women’s athletics, the Knights of Columbus chose to name this award in her honor.
THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AWARDS - Continued MORAN AWARD: Football Bill Moran was a coach of football at Judge Memorial for only three years; however, his commitment to his players and his love and dedication to them made him a legend in the Judge athletic tradition. By winning the 1948 state football title, he put Judge Memorial on the map. Following his tragic death in 1949, the Knights of Columbus initiated this award to honor a member of the football team who exemplified the character, leadership, and sportsmanship that Bill Moran loved. A plaque in the football locker rooms states simply, “In Memory of Bill Moran. Builder of Judge Memorial’s First Championship Team – Builder of Judge Memorial Men.” The Knight’s Moran Award is the oldest award given to a student at Judge Memorial.
FRANK KLEKAS AWARD: Outstanding Male Athlete Through the decades of the 1950s and 1960s, Frank Klekas was simply the “Coach.” Frank coached six different sports (baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis and track) during this era. He won numerous Region titles and several State football championships. He was respected by his colleagues for his work ethic and loved by his players for his concern for them as people. Coach understood the value of the “coachable moment,” working always to emphasis the “love of the game” and the value of team competition. Judge Memorial honors the positive impact Coach Klekas, and the countless outstanding Bulldog coaches through the decades, have had on thousands of student-athletes, by naming this award for the man known as “Coach.”
LINDA SIMPSON “BULLDOG OF THE YEAR” AWARD Outstanding Dedication to Extra-Curricular Life at Judge
The Bulldog of the Year Award is presented to that student who exemplifies the “Bulldog Spirit,” a perfect description of our very own Linda Simpson. Mrs. Simpson taught English at Judge for 24 years, played in the orchestra, served as an advisor to our nationally-recognized literary magazine, and cheered on our student and alumni, whatever their endeavor. The recipient is acknowledged as someone who is genuine, selfless, and supportive of others, in and out of the classroom. The individual selected for this award exhibits commitment, dedication, and school spirit, and has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the extra-curricular life of Judge Memorial. This award has been known by numerous names over the decades, most recently as the Roy and Teru Okamoto Awards.
THE LINDA SIMPSON SCHOLARSHIP The Linda Simpson Scholarship was created in 2017 in honor of Mrs. Simpson who taught English at Judge Memorial for 24 years and changed countless students’ lives. It is awarded each spring to deserving Judge Memorial rising junior(s) and/or rising senior(s) to assist with tuition costs for the upcoming school year. Recipients are chosen based on character, integrity, and financial need.
TRIPLE ‘A’ AWARD Outstanding Achievement in Arts, Academics & Athletics Judge Memorial encourages and champions students to be well-rounded in academics and also an active participant in the life of the school through involvement in activities, athletics, and service. This award was created in 2004 to honor an individual extremely involved in school activities and dedicated to their school, and one who has achieved a high level of success in arts, academics, and athletics. This award has been known in the past as the Jeanette Sawaya Award.
THE BLESSED OSCAR ROMERO SCHOLARSHIP Judge Memorial Catholic High School is privileged to annually award a post-high school scholarship given in honor of Blessed Oscar Romero. The donation and source of this scholarship is anonymous, and designed to provide an opportunity for students to continue their education at a college or university of their choice. The seniors selected for this award embody the ideals that Oscar Romero cherished: a strong spiritual direction, a deep interest in eradicating social injustice and poverty, and a belief that education leads to a brighter future
THE TIM KELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Tim Kelly Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends to recognize the Class of 1964 Judge Memorial alumnus Tim Kelly for his excellence in journalism and purity of heart, to provide financial support for journalism and media scholarships for students. It is awarded each year in the late spring to a deserving Judge Memorial new media/journalism rising junior or senior to assist with tuition costs for the upcoming school year. The selection team considers the character, integrity, and financial needs of the qualified students.
EQUITABLE EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP The Equitable Excellence Scholarships are awarded to students across the country who make a positive and lasting impact in their communities and beyond. Students who are selected to receive these scholarships demonstrate the ability to set and reach goals, as shown by outstanding achievement in school, community or work-related activities—especially those that lessen risk to health, safety, the environment, or financial security. Equitable Excellence Scholarship recipients come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, but are united by their drive, determination, and strong character.
ROTARY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP Rotary is a worldwide service organization whose members are volunteers from the local to international level. The mission of Rotary Club is to encourage service as a worthy endeavor on a daily basis and the organization fosters cultural understanding and friendly relations between people of different countries. Students are selected for scholarships based on civic and compassionate service, financial need, knowledge of Rotary, and accomplishment in academics.
PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE AWARDS The President’s Volunteer Service Award is a presidential honor that recognizes the valuable contributions of volunteers nationwide who are answering the call to serve others through their current volunteer activities. We recognize students who have demonstrated a commitment to service, logging anywhere from 50 to 250-plus hours of volunteer work for qualifying organizations. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities and inspires those around them to take action.
NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Approximately 1.6 million high school students enter the program each year. Winners of the scholarship are selected based on their academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the student’s own essay.
AP CAPSTONE AP Capstone, perhaps Judge’s most rigorous academic program, helps distinguish students for college admissions boards and build a foundation for lifelong success. AP Capstone candidates must demonstrate solid study habits, self-discipline, vigilance and intellectual curiosity. We recognize students who have passed AP Seminar, AP Research, and at least four AP classes with a score of three or higher.
PRESENTATION OF ACADEMIC AWARDS Judge Memorial Catholic High School annually honors students with the presentation of academic awards, representing excellence in the classroom. For this honor, academic departments select a student who has proven themselves exemplary in their respective discipline. These • • • •

HONORS GRADUATES - Class of 2020 Students of the Judge Memorial Catholic High School graduating class with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher are distinguished by wearing Gold Honor Cords at the commencement ceremony. The Judge Memorial faculty and staff are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize these students at the Annual Awards Celebration.
FIRST HONORS GRADUATES - Class of 2020 Judge Memorial Catholic High School annually recognizes the Top Ten graduates for achievement in AP and Honor courses as First Honor Graduates.
BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF SALT LAKE CITY AWARD Outstanding Scholar-Participant in Activities and in Athletics This award is presented to recognize the outstanding and multi-faceted work done by the Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. Diocesan bishops exemplify the philosophy of whole person development, installing that spirit in those they encounter. This philosophy and spirit is at the heart of Judge Memorial Catholic High School. The faculty, staff, coaches, and advisors at Judge are committed to building a co-curricular program that prioritizes academic excellence. This award is presented annually to those scholar-participants who have been outstanding in their respective sport or activity and consistently demonstrated a commitment to both academic excellence and school involvement. The award is presented to a male and female student in both activities and athletics and recognizes academic achievement, leadership, and service to the school and community. This award has been known by numerous names over the decades, most recently as the Tony Sheeran and Monsignor James T. Kenny Awards.
