Sankofa Sanctuary is rooted on a history of the Sankofa bird and its importance to African communities. Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana meaning “to retrieve" represented by a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth. The Sankofa image has been adopted by numerous afrocentric organizations in North America to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. Situated on the site of “The Weeping Time” (one of the largest slave sales in US History), Sankofa Santuary is a place of learning about the past in order to build a successful and better future. It emphasizes the need for understanding and listening to stories in order to learn about all of human history.
