MR. LES GREGORY

In dedicating this 1987-88 edition of THE CALCIID, we, the senior class and the editors, had only one nomination for consideration. The recipient of the dedication is truly dedicated to his position. We purposely did not select the word "job," for we honestly believe that LES GREGORY enjoys his position, and doesn't work a "job."

His responsibilities are those of the Student Activities Coordinator, which means he works with us, the students, to coordinate activities for us. He does this well and we are very appreciative of his work. However, we are quite certain that his job description does not call for his being our friend.

Les Gregory is more than a Limestone employee. He is our true friend. He is dependable. He is courteous and he is concerned. We are indeed grateful that LES GREGORY has the position at Limestone that he does.

Whether it be "Monday Night Football," SGA activities, training room needs, or just needing a friend, LES GREGORY has always been there, is continually there and, hopefully for Limestone's sake, will always be there.

He has proven to be a loyal worker for the College, the Student Affairs Office, and for us. And in our special way of dedicating the 1987-88 edition of THE CALCIID, we humbly say "thanks" to our friend, LES GREGORY.

"Limestone College" -is the first thing that catches your eyes as you enter the College. Anyone can look at the school and see our good qualities, but it takes an insider to really appreciate the beauty of the College. Have you ever watched the changing of the leaves in autumn, or just taken a walk on a warm spring night?

Limestone not only is one of the most beautiful colleges in the South, it is also the m ost unique ... It is a college with pink dogwoods, blooming azaleas, lawns shaded by old oak trees, and stately buildings. The tradition, heritage, look, and feel of Limestone has remained constant and will remain because of the love and PULL ING TOGETHER of each student, faculty, and staff member.

History of Limestone College The original site of Limestone College was developed in 1835 as a luxury resort attracting southern aristocrats to its famous natural springs.

Unfortunately, this famous southern resort went bankrupt and, in 1845, Dr. William Curtis purchased the property and established Limestone Springs Female High School.

During the pre-dawn of the Civil War, William Curtis loaned $75,000 to assist with the funding of the Confederacy. This loan, due to the eventual failure of the Confederacy, caused Curtis' and the school's bankruptcy. At that point, the property was sold to four men who continued the girls' high school, but they also fell into financial difficulty. In 1878, Peter Cooper pumped funds into the school, and assisted in its revitalization. In 1880, the Spartanburg Baptist Association acquired the property and elected the first board of trustees, renaming the school the Cooper-Limestone Institute for young ladies. The school continued to struggle financially, but community interest, trustees, and alumni, along with the sale of some property owned by the school, kept it operating.

Ine The Limestone College Fine Arts Department helps to sharpen the creative skills of many talented students and to develop talent in students who are taking fine arts classes for the first time as an elective. Through these classes and outside activities, the students become closer to each other. They begin to not only sharpen their talents but they also begin to make new friends. The friends one makes through the fine arts program or the best friends a person could make at college. They help PULL TOGETHER that special feeling that one finds at Limestone College and creates a bond that will last for years to come.

Wake Up Quarry!!

------------------------~~

For years the quarry was just a pretty lake to look at. On June 26, to everyones surprise the pretty lake woke up. During its brief moment of power the quarry displayed a huge appetite for an acre of the schools parking lot. After the incident many people believed the quarry holds many mysteries, and could soon wake up again to eat more of Limestone College. Well until that time comes the faculty and staff alone with the students carry on with classes and daily routine.

THE PRESIDENT

"My goal is to lead Limestone to recognition as one of America's outstanding small independent Christian liberal arts colleges.

In order to achieve that I believe we need to: - aim for excellence in academics and extracurricular activities; - uphold the traditional Judeo-Christian values of the college; and - foster positive attitude and leadership qualities.

As we achieve national recognition, each student's diploma will be more valuable with each passing year.

"My thoughts about this year are very positive. I am encouraged by the fact that new students enrollment is up 40 percent and total students on the campus are up 18 percent.

Also, the academic skills and test scores of the new students seem to indicate that they are better prepared for college. More students have demonstrated a special interest in extracurricular activities and the special events for this year are outstanding. If we can continue these trends Limestone can be recognized as one of America's outstanding colleges."
