MR. WILLIAM

SUTTON We, the senior class and Calciid staff of 1986, are very proud and honored to dedicate this year's annual to Mr. William Sutton. Since he joined us in 1967, Mr. Sutton has become a major force in making Limestone a nice place to be. Some of his involvements include being the Director of Financial Aid (76-79), working with the school's audio-visual and printing equipment, chairman of the commencement committee, and being a widely respected and well-liked associate professor of chemistry and mathematics. We deeply appreciate Mr. Sutton's extreme loyalty and dedication to us and to our college, his overwhelming concern for the students and his colleagues, and his eagerness and willingness to help anyone in any way he can. We graciously bestow upon Mr. Sutton the well deserved dedication of the 1986 Calciid.

DR. FRANCIS W. BONNER INTERIM PRESIDENT

The life of Dr. Francis Wesley Bonner has been dedicated to liberal learning primarily at Furman University, but since June 17, 1985, at Limestone College. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Alabama, Dr. Bonner earned his Ph.D. degree in English at the University of North Carolina and joined Furman's faculty as Associate Professor of English in 1949.

In September 1953 he became Dean of the Men's College at Furman; and for a third of a century, he has applied his considerable talents to teaching, academic administration, campus planning and development, and regional and national organizations to improve collegiate education. In a succession of positions, as Dean of the University, as Vice-President and Provost, he has been the chief academic officer of Furman University for two decades, serving three presiden ts as Furman took its merited place among the finest liberal arts colleges in America.

Dr. Bonner has been active in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Southern Conference.

His presence at Limestone College has indeed m.ade a positive impact, and the College's Trustees, Faculty and Administration are grateful for his guidance and leadership.

ATHLETICS AT LIMESTONE Athletics at Limestone College is synonomous with the word "successful." The Saints captured the inaugural Palmetto Cup, signifying the best composite won-loss record for all four-year colleges and universities in the state. To top that, Limestone, in 1984, defended the Spartanburg Herald-Journal's prestigious award. Highlighting the 1984 sports campaign was the acquisition of the school's first NAIA National Championship (golf).

The trophy cases in the lobby of the Timken Physical Education Center are filled with awards from all seven sports (volleyball, soccer, men's and women's basketball, tennis, softball and golf). A retired jersey of Anthony McPhaul, Limestone's most celebrated basketball player, rests in one case. On the walls of the 1,800-seat, multi-purpose facility, are momen t um commemorating the various sports' accomplishments, providing national rankings and top records. Additionally, all-American performers from the school, which encompasses three sports, grace the walls. Along side of the commemorative marking of the Palmetto Cups, is a sign which reminds all of the golf team's 1984 masterpiece.

While Limestone athletes are far fro m being fancy, they are, wi thou t question, quite successful. The hardware, the banners, the recognition-all of which serves as a reminder of Limestone's accomplishments-are very nice.

However, they serve as reminders for the athletes that past traditions are wonderful, and that the traditions are being carried on . It is only the beginning of a most successful area of the College.

IN MEMORY OF MRS. WHEELER

For more than two decades (1949-72), Lucy Glasson W heeler (Mrs. H arold P.), served Limestone College devotedly as a member of the English faculty. During those years Mrs. Wheeler, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University taught a variety of courses ranging from advanced grammar to modern poetry, acted for a time as head librarian, and later chaired the English department. The trustees of Limestone showed their appreciation of her many years of service and loyalty by naming her Professor Emerita of English upon her retirement in 1972.

Retirement, however, did not end Mrs. Wheeler's service to Limestone. By altruistically volunteering her time, ability and knowledge, she continued her extraordinary contributions to the college as research assistant for the alumni office until hospitalized by an automobile accident.

On October 25, 1985, Mrs. Wheeler died in Cherokee Memorial Hospital from complications following the accident.
