HEADMASTER’S LETTER Friends, Every October, St. Timothy’s Church and School join with Episcopal schools and churches around the nation for Episcopal Schools Celebration. The theme for the 2019 celebration comes from Philippians 2:13:“For God is at work in You.” Rev. Dan Heischman, Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, shared these thoughts as he reflected on the importance of community related to God’s work in each of us: As natural as it can be, in our contemporary world, to view education in individualistic terms, Episcopal schools stand for something more. The best education comes within a community … be it the coming together of our community on a regular basis in chapel, the communities and groups that we are called to serve beyond our walls, the encounter with difference that makes learning truly complete, or the daily life lessons we teach through the interaction that takes place between self and others.

There are many things at St. Timothy’s School for which I am proud and grateful, as both the headmaster and a parent of three St. Timothy’s Titans. However, I am most proud of, and grateful for, our STS community.

That community starts with our students—the fourth graders and kindergarteners reading together as Biggles and Littles; the young musicians, angels, shepherds, wise men and children of the world participating in the Christmas Pageant; the middle schoolers opening car doors at morning drop-off; the eighth graders leading kindness and inclusion activities in our lower school classrooms and so much more.

The community includes parents and grandparents, serving on more than 30 different Friends of St. Timothy’s committees; volunteering as parent ambassadors, giving campus tours and welcoming our new families; meeting regularly as a prayer group to pray for our school community and supporting the School with their financial gifts.

Certainly, our alumni and their families are part of this special STS community.

We love the many graduates who come back to visit and remain connected with their former teachers. I’m thrilled when I see alumni as after-school care counselors, athletic coaches, teachers and parents. Our alumni, living across the U.S. and throughout the world, prove that the STS community isn’t confined to any particular locale.

The heart and soul of our community is and always has been the teachers and staff—both past and present—who give their all in the hopes of positively shaping lives and instilling the knowledge, skills and values that prepare children for their lifetimes. Both my current colleagues and those who came before us have forever shaped this wonderful community we’re so fortunate to call our own.

Our Spirit magazine may at first glance seem to be a celebration of school events, programs and accomplishments. However, I hope you read it as a celebration of community. It’s a community of faith, hope and love—especially love—where I am certain that God is very much at work.

It’s a great day to be a Titan!

From Across the Pond to St. Timothy’s: Welcome Father Allen

T

o Father Allen Waller, family is everything. The need to be close to family inspired him to leave England after living overseas for 15 years and return to North Carolina to serve as rector of St. Timothy’s Church.

Born in Goldsboro, NC, Waller moved to Knightdale when he was four years old. He spent his early childhood there, before his family moved to Virginia. Waller attended James Madison University (JMU) in Virginia.

It is there that his faith journey began.

Waller didn’t grow up going to church every Sunday. It wasn’t until he was at JMU that he became curious about religion. His freshman year, Waller became close friends with a Bible study leader in his dorm. They were very similar, but Waller noticed that his friend’s strong faith served as an anchor in his life. Waller had always had multiple extracurricular activities—drama, tennis and choir were among them—but he felt that his interests were disconnected. Inviting God into his life gave Waller a greater sense of purpose and direction.

Embracing his faith led Waller on a transformative journey after college. Like many, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after graduation. Waller discovered Time for God, a Christian charity that connects people with volunteer opportunities in England. Waller planned on living in England for one year, but he ended up staying for 15. He first volunteered at Fernhead Road Methodist Church in Kilburn, London, and subsequently joined

Time for God as a supervisor. In this role, he traveled across the country to mentor volunteers and facilitate new placement opportunities. After eight years with Time for God, in 2013, Waller became a youth minister at St. James Church in Muswell Hill, London. There, he met and married his wife, Angelica.

daughter, Arielle, closer to family in the United States. Waller learned of the open rector position at St. Timothy’s Church and the rest is history.

Waller enjoyed his lay service, but felt called to do more. He realized that priests help people through every stage of their lives, from beginning to end, in good times and bad. Waller says “it is a great privilege to walk alongside people in these moments and the first moment I saw for myself that this was what ministry was, I was sold.” He enrolled in seminary at the University of Oxford. Upon completing the program, Waller performed his curacy at St. Saviour’s Church in Oxton.

St. Timothy’s made a lasting impression: “What I read about STS told me that this school was a place of excellence. But when I began to meet the actual people that make STS what it is, then I was really impressed.

Though I do have an important role as the spiritual head of STS, what I value most about it, I value as a father—one who wants to see his daughter learn and engage with the vast beauty of God’s world. For that reason, St. Timothy’s School is a gift to us, a place we would not otherwise know of if we lived elsewhere. I feel privileged to be a priest here and proud to be a parent.”

9/11 Day of Service The STS Class of 2020, none of whom had been born yet in 2001, observed September 11th and learned more about what occurred that day. For years, 8th grade students have participated in a day of service on this occasion. This year they volunteered at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, where they helped clean and bag sweet potatoes.

Afterward, students used virtual reality headsets to tour the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City and reflected on their experiences during a Writers’ Workshop class.

Sarah Growney reflects, “Our 9/11 Day of Service was rewarding and engaging.

It gave our class a fantastic opportunity to give back in the spirit of supporting others.”

Headmaster’s Awards Head of School Tim Tinnesz recognized Ava Palmgren (L) and Alex Kilani (R) for their hard work and character during the annual eighth grade awards ceremony last spring. Ava won the 2019 Headmaster’s Cup, given to an eighth grader who encompasses the outstanding qualities of a St. Timothy’s School student. Alex received the 2019 Faculty Cup for also embodying the core characteristics of an STS student.

Once a month, Biggles and Littles meet for a fun, educational activity facilitated by teachers.

Another Generation of Biggles & Littles Every fall, a new generation of Biggles and Littles is formed at St. Timothy’s.

Fourth grade students act as mentors, Biggles, to Littles, our students in kindergarten. They met in September and got to know one another a bit using interview questions.

This year, the first Biggles and Littles meeting coincided with another STS tradition—Friends T-Shirt Day.

Popular Children’s Author Visits STS St. Timothy’s fourth and fifth graders kicked off the new school year with a visit from Scott Reintgen, author of the popular children’s trilogy Nyxia. Reintgen gave students a sneak peek of the then forthcoming Saving Fable, his middle-grade debut novel. The fourth and fifth graders left the event eager to read the book and contemplating Reintgen’s encouragement to “dream big, but be willing to work hard.”

The Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team was ranked number one both in the regular season and the conference tournament.

or the first time since the 2014 inception of the Capital Area Middle School Conference, St. Timothy’s School won the coveted Capital Cup for the 2018-2019 school year. This award goes to the school with the strongest athletic program, determined by the win/loss record across all sports and seasons.

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball and Varsity Girls’ Tennis teams can take credit for boosting the STS win record. Both teams were unstoppable this past season.

Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team is Stronger Than Ever After a one-point loss to Magellan during the 2017-2018 conference championships, the girls on the varsity basketball team were motivated to work hard during the 2018-2019 season.

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team and Head Coach Brian Russell celebrate their conference win.

They won 12 out of their 16 regular season games, earning them a number two seed in the conference. Head Coach Brian Russell attributes their strong performance to effective communication and exceptional technical skills on the court.

Players maintained their high-level performance during the conference, rolling through the first two rounds of tournament play and advancing to the conference championship game after defeating Grace Christian in the semi-finals.

Like in 2018, the Titans faced off against Magellan. An ambitious threepointer at the last second sent the game into overtime. The Titans took advantage of the extra time and earned a victory. This historic win was the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team’s first conference championship win in more than a decade.

These talented athletes, led by coaches Joy Denney and John Markham, competed with consistency and ambition. At the end of the season, the 11 eighth grade students celebrated another year of being undefeated in the conference championship.

The 2019 Varsity Girls’ Tennis team continued the winning streak. On October 10, 2019, the team of 14 seventh and eighth grade girls finished their undefeated season strong with a championship win Congratulations to these outstanding student athletes!

new school year is always an exciting time, but this fall has been bittersweet as two of our long-serving colleagues retired last spring.

Karen Campbell was St. Timothy’s Development Assistant for the past 13 years. In this role, Karen acted as editor of the Spirit magazine, sharing school news with our community of parents and grandparents, alumni and friends.

Many of our beloved traditions, like the Veterans’ Day celebration, alumni homecoming dinner and goodie boxes for college students, came to life under Karen’s thoughtful leadership.

We wish Karen a happy and healthy retirement!

St. Timothy’s inside and out. During her four decades at the School, Cathy met with each student and parent who came through our doors and importantly gave shape to each class of students and the overall school community. In June, the School dedicated the main campus road Cathy Clement Drive in recognition of Cathy’s legacy.

Taylor Lord ’10 returned to STS this summer as the Advancement Assistant and Arrin Dutton, who had been Associate Director of Admissions since 2014, has assumed the position of Director of Admissions.

Graduation 2019 This past June, the largest class to go through St. Timothy’s School gathered for a final ceremony. Twenty-five of the members of the graduating class are Alpha Omegas—students who have attended St. Timothy’s from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Dry eyes were hard to find as family members, faculty and staff watched the 76 members of the STS Class of 2019 come together for the last time.

The Bishop of North Carolina, Rt. Rev. Samuel Rodman, addressed the graduates, imparting an inspiring message for their futures. He also gave each of the graduates a Bible.

These recent graduates may now be scattered among 17 area high schools (and further!), but they’ve left a lasting impression at STS.

Keeping Up with the STS Class of 2015 This past June, members of the STS Class of 2015 graduated high school.

We reached out for updates about their high school achievements and post-graduation plans.

Ella Caroline Asebes, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumna, was accepted into the Honors College at High Point University, where she was awarded a four-year Presidential Fellowship.

Chris Bain graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he was an active participant and leader in Marching Band, member of the Robotics team, and National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

He plans to study aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University.

Felicity Baker graduated from Leesville Road High School. She is attending Santa Clara University, where she plays goalkeeper on the women’s soccer team.

Evan Bartle has enrolled at North Carolina State University, where he plans to study engineering, play club soccer and participate in an undergraduate research program. A graduate of Ravenscroft School, Evan was a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society and the Computer Science National Honor Society. He was named the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A AllRegion Soccer Player and the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference All-Conference Soccer Player.

Carly Bierer graduated from Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, where she played volleyball and was a manager of the team for two years. She discovered a passion for special education and was a Teacher Cadet in a special education classroom at Wake Forest-Rolesville, where she actively taught the students. A member of the Physical Education Pupil Instructor program, Carly worked with special education students in a gym setting. After school, Carly tutored children in beginning math, reading and writing. She is attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with plans to major in Special Education.

Brandon Buckley graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he ran cross country and track, was on the Note in the Pocket Teen Board and was a National Honor Society member. He plans to major in International Studies at American University.

Emily Burroughs graduated from Broughton High School, where she was on both the varsity golf team and the junior varsity volleyball team.

She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Service Club, a class advisor, and member of the Principal Student Advisory Council. She received the BHS Outstanding Record of Community Service Award and the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States Volleyball Academic All-American Award. Emily is majoring in Psychology at North Carolina State University, where she is on the pre-physician assistant track.

Katie Burroughs is on the pre-health track at North Carolina State University, where she is majoring in Psychology. Katie was on the varsity tennis team at Broughton High School and in the top six singles all four years. She received the Allan Head Coach’s Award, the Academic & Athletic All-Conference awards and the Raleigh Tennis Association Spirit of Tennis Scholarship. Katie also was on the Principal Student Advisory Council, was a class advisor, served as the vice president of the CAPS in the Community Club and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Service Club.

Anna Carrigan was on the Leesville Road High School swim team; her relay team won the state competition and was ranked sixth in the country for All-American swimming. She will continue to swim at East Carolina University, where she has joined the club swimming team and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Anna plans to major in Psychology.

Maggie Duffy is attending Sarah Lawrence College to study journalism, politics and film. While at Sanderson High School, she edited the Features section of The Sandscript, participated in the awardwinning theater production of 26 Pebbles and organized the North Carolina Town Hall for School Safety—a forum to inspire discussions of school shootings and gun violence. She plans on participating in the student-written newspaper, the radio station and social justice groups at Sarah Lawrence.

Warren Fusco graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School. He is attending East Carolina University and plans to major in Architectural Design.

Sam Futch is attending Penn State to major in Cybersecurity Analytics and Operations. A graduate of Cary Academy, he directed a 24-person broadcast crew to air live varsity football games on a local NBC affiliate.

He also played varsity golf and designed and programmed light shows for Cary Academy’s technical theater.

Trace Futrell, a graduate of Broughton High School, played with the honors jazz band, was on the varsity swim team and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a Capstone Scholar and an Academic Scholar at the University of South Carolina. Trace plans on majoring in Physics.

Brandon Gugenheim, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumnus, is attending the University of South Carolina.

Kody Haglund is studying business finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He played soccer at St. Thomas More Academy and won all-conference in 2018.

Jake Hamilton graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he performed in 10 different drama productions. He has enrolled in the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University, where he plans on studying computer science.

Collin Holder plans on studying communications at Appalachian State University. While at Cardinal Gibbons, he participated in percussion all four years and was on the wrestling team for three.

Collin received the Most Improved Wrestler award in the 2016-2017 season.

Carter Holjes graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School. He is attending the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a baseball scholarship.

Peter Lane, a graduate of Raleigh Charter High School, is attending Sewanee.

Rom Lewis plans to major in Government at Wofford College, where he received a Benjamin Wofford Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement and service. A Cardinal Gibbons High School alumnus, Rom participated in student council all four years and received the Outstanding Service award his freshman and senior years. Rom directed the rollout of new computers for incoming freshman classes and solved one-to-one technology issues for students and teachers.

He is an Eagle Scout from St. Timothy’s Boy Scout Troop 334.

Grace Patton, a graduate of Saint Mary’s School, is attending Wake Technical Community College.

Katherine Priu was a 3200-meter State Champion in track at Cardinal Gibbons High School. She also ran with the cross country team, which won four state championships, and qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals. She will continue to run cross country and track at Johns Hopkins University.

Grace Raphun, a Broughton High School alumna, is studying music education at Meredith College.

Shelby Reaugh, a graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School, was the lead scorer on the hockey team her junior and senior years. She also volunteered with girls’ hockey teams, was on the honor roll all four years and won the Honey Baker Award in 2019. Shelby is majoring in veterinary medicine at Becker College, where she plays NCAA Division 3 hockey.

Elizabeth Riddick is attending the University of Virginia to study architecture. She plans to add English or art history as a double major.

A graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School, Elizabeth ran cross country and track for four years and participated on the Academic Team during her senior year. She was a junior marshal and graduated in the top ten percent of her class.

Lilly Roth graduated from Broughton High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.

She played varsity tennis all four years and helped fight food insecurity in the Raleigh area SPIRIT FALL 2019 / 11

with Food Ark. Lilly is studying business administration at North Carolina State University, where she plans to volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House.

Kate Sabiston plans to major in Environmental Studies at Sarah Lawrence College. A graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School, she was president of the Green Team, the co-captain of Mock Trial and the social media director for Humans for Justice. She was also a member of Students Demand Action and the Green Rights Organization for the World.

Marianna Schantz is studying international relations at Tufts University. While at Ravenscroft School, she started the Speech and Debate Club, received the Academic Achievement Award for World Languages in 2016 and 2019 and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Cum Laude Society. Marianna played first seed on the tennis team all four years. She was on the All-Conference team for three years and played for the All-State Tennis Team her senior year. Marianna also coached for the Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina.

Rollie Tillman graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he ran cross country and track, participated in fishing club and was a member of the National Honor Society. Rollie earned the rank of Eagle Scout the summer before his senior year and was active at Christ Episcopal Church throughout high school. He plans to major in Environmental Science at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Rob Treadway graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he played for three years on the soccer team. He was also an Eagle Scout, a Pope Scholarship recipient and the president of the Serving Our Soldiers club. Rob is on the pre-med track at Wake Forest University, where he plans to get involved in Reformed University Fellowship, an oncampus Christian ministry group.

Sydney Tucker is attending Barnard College of Columbia University, where she plans to study English with a concentration in creative writing.

A graduate of Leesville Road High School, Sydney participated in the Executive Council for three years and was the senior editor for The

Mycenaean, Leesville’s student newspaper. She was a National Honor Society member, a North Carolina Scholar and a junior marshal.

Sydney received the 2019 PTSA Academic Scholarship and was a 2019 National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Once a week, she volunteered as a math tutor at Leesville Road Elementary School through the National Math Honor Society.

TJ Walch was a four-year varsity baseball player, an Eagle Scout and a member of the Future Farmers of America at Saint Thomas More Academy. He is attending Elon University to double major in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.

Ruth Anne Warner graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She participated in the dance program all four years and was a member of the FYI Club, where she volunteered to tutor children at Beginnings and Beyond. Her senior year, Ruth Anne volunteered behind the scenes in costumes for the drama performances of Hairspray and Spelling Bee. She is attending North Carolina State University, where she plans to major in Fashion and Textile Management and minor in Business.

Mimi Wayne is studying communications at the University of Denver. She graduated from Ravenscroft School, where she ran varsity cross country and played varsity lacrosse.

Duncan Wegner, a Crossroads Flex alumnus, was recruited to play soccer at Hofstra University.

He is enrolled in the Honors College and is considering majoring in Sustainability Studies.

Cynthia Woodward graduated from Ravenscroft School, where she earned 12 varsity letters for the tennis, basketball and track teams. Cynthia was awarded the Raleigh Sports Club student-athlete scholarship, was a member of the National Honor Society and the Cum Laude Society.

Outside of school, Cynthia worked with an organization that empowered middle school girls and prepared them for high school.

She also planned and led youth group retreats for her church.

Cynthia attends Wake Forest University.

LETTER FROM THE RECTOR I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 2 Timothy 1:5 (New International Version) The first gift I received when I started at St. Timothy’s School was a magnet. You know the ones: those round magnets you find on the back of almost every car going through the carpool lines. I’ve seen a few different versions, some with a school crest and others with the mascot.

The one feature they share is “St. Timothy’s School,” printed in large, uppercase letters.

But who was Saint Timothy? Who was this man with whom we are proud to associate our school? Timothy was an apprentice of the Apostle Paul. They met through Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, and mother, Eunice. Both women were Christians, dedicated followers of a relatively new faith. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul praises Lois and Eunice—not for their accomplishments, inheritance or status, but rather for their “sincere faith.”

In Timothy’s grandmother and mother, Paul saw a deep trust in God. Their strong faith didn’t come about by living in the Bible Belt or going to church once a year at Christmas. These women truly walked the walk—trusting God to lead them, teach them, provide for them and sustain them through all of life’s twists and turns.

hat better way to celebrate graduating middle school than ziplining through a tropical jungle or touring an ancient castle? Two groups of St. Timothy’s students enjoyed these adventures during the annual postgraduation trips. For more than a week, nine students explored Costa Rica with middle school Spanish teacher Lisa Lowrance and six students accompanied Latin teacher Mary Cerrato to uncover the past in Roman Britain.

Lowrance designed the trip to Costa Rica to be both educational and fun. Students lived with host families, attended 20 hours of Spanish language classes and shadowed local high school students.

Students had plenty of opportunities to practice their Spanish, speaking to one another and locals while hiking through the jungle in Manual Antonio, taking surfing lessons at the beach and shopping at local stores.

The initial adjustment was difficult for students, but they soon became comfortable in their new environment. Lowrance recalls that at the start of the trip, “the students

r STS Graduates were very nervous about staying with host families. Yet, each one of them survived and greatly improved their Spanish language skills. At first, I had to help everyone in stores and restaurants. After a few days, they didn’t need me because they could communicate by themselves.”

The group experienced a wide range of activities during their visit: they explored the traditions and sights of Costa Rica by preparing local dishes during a cooking class, dancing along with a Zumba class and swimming in hot springs heated by the thermal energy of a volcano.

The entire trip, Lowrance admired the way students conducted themselves: “they unfailingly impressed me and filled me with pride with the way they represented the School, their families, our country and, especially, themselves.”

While trekking through the rainforest, STS student Emma Claire Broome remarked to Lowrance, “I wish that I had realized how much I would actually use what you taught us. It makes so much more sense now and I see why it was important.”

On the Roman Britain trip, the St. Timothy’s group didn’t just fly over 3,700 miles—they traveled back in time.

Cerrato was first inspired to visit the old Roman stomping grounds when she realized that “Minimus,” the book she uses in her sixth-grade classes, is based on an actual family who lived in Vindolanda around 100 AD. She began to research the area and discovered that the Robin Birley Archaeology Centre offers adults a two-week volunteer program at an active archaelogical site.

Cerrato received a Diab Grant from STS to participate in the program, and she so thoroughly enjoyed her time in Vindolanda that she connected with The Paideia Institute to develop a student-centered excursion to the Great British cities that are steeped in Roman history.

Hiking the remains of Hadrian’s Wall, creating pottery using ancient Roman techniques and watching an archeologist unearth a 2,000-year-old shoe brought to life all that the STS graduates had learned through their coursework in Latin.

When they visited the Chesterholm

Museum, the students immediately noticed the wooden tablets that are among the first artifacts showing a woman’s writing in Latin. The students recalled passages from “Minimus” that described how ancient Romans inscribed messages on wax-covered wooden tablets using a stylus and ink.

The group didn’t spend the entire trip chasing down the past—while in Northumberland, Cerrato took her students to Alnwick Castle, featured in the first two Harry Potter films as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students were transported into the magical world as they soared about on broomsticks, saw where Harry and Ron famously crashed the Weasley car and walked under the archway that serves as the entrance of the school.

This inaugural trip to Roman Britain was a great success for both the students and the adults. Cerrato said, “I was thrilled by how well this trip went. No matter what we were doing, everyone was engaged—they had positive attitudes and were eager to try new things.”

The group hung ten at Jaco Beach, a popular destination for surfers.

Bringing Creativity to the Classroom:

Project Zero Inspires Faculty

W

hat is the difference between knowledge and understanding? This compelling question is one of many posed to first-grade lead teacher Angie Austin and second-grade teacher Annabel Pfeiffer when they attended Project Zero’s Classroom Institute at Harvard University in July.

At Project Zero, Austin and Pfeiffer considered questions at the core of teaching and learning: What experiences and practices will best prepare students for the changing landscape they inhabit? How can teachers foster critical and creative thinking? And how can teachers make sure that all students are learning? Exploring frameworks and tools developed and tested across grade levels, disciplines and learning styles, they discovered new ways to deepen student engagement, to support students in building their critical and creative thinking skills and to make more visible their students’ thinking and learning.

Founded in 1967 by Nelson Goodman, a philosopher at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Project Zero is recognized as the premiere experience for teachers worldwide who want to explore innovative teaching methods that are designed to prepare students for the world in which they will develop, live and work.

Austin and Pfeiffer were two of only three educators from North Carolina at the institute; the other participants traveled from other states in the U.S. and countries as far away as South Africa and Spain.

According to Austin and Pfeiffer, the week was exciting and intense.

Each morning, Project Zero instructors presented participants a question to consider or situation to resolve. Group discussions, lectures and workshops introduced ways faculty could explore that day’s topic.

The conference was a hands-on experience: Austin and a team of five other teachers performed a dramatic interpretation of a poem, using only body motions. Pfeiffer and her group attempted to create a paper airplane that could hold five pennies and still fly.

Thanks to Annual Fund gifts, Pfeiffer and Austin attended the 2019 Classroom Institute, where they met David Perkins, a founding member of Project Zero.

Being in the role of learner made them feel like kids again—they were excited and engaged. Pfeiffer commented “as a teacher, it was great to be a student again.”

Both returned to school inspired and eager to incorporate the tools and strategies they developed at Project Zero into their classrooms.

Pfeiffer shared an example of a potential classroom exercise. She reflected that when most people need something, they think “where can I buy this?” rather than attempting to make it themselves. Pfeiffer intends to challenge this reflex through academic lessons and playtime.

Pfeiffer was also struck by the importance of introducing things at a reasonable pace: “One of the biggest takeaways was to start small and do one thing really well.” It’s tempting to bring all the new teaching strategies into the classroom at once, but taking on such a huge project can lead to confusing lessons. Gradual incorporation of Project Zero techniques will help Pfeiffer foster a culture of deeper thinking within the classroom.

Austin was eager for the school year to start so she could teach her first-graders new ways to interact with each other. On Friday afternoons, she brings the three first-grade classes together to work on an activity. This intermixing gives students the opportunity to collaborate with peers that they don’t see on a day-to-day basis and to make new friends.

After learning about the value of reflection, both Austin and Pfeiffer decided to model it actively for their students. If a lesson doesn’t go as planned, Pfeiffer explained that she will acknowledge that with her students. By demonstrating the belief that there is always room for improvement, Pfeiffer hopes to reinforce with students both the possibility and value of learning from your mistakes.

Austin explained: “It is important for students to learn to reflect and to have time to do so. When students reflect on their work, they have the opportunity to not only produce higher quality work but to gain a deeper understanding through the process. Reflection helps students practice having a growth mindset, recognizing that there are always ways to grow and improve.”

Austin and Pfeiffer aren’t the only ones from St. Timothy’s to benefit from Project Zero. Lindsay Behrens, the Head of Lower School, attended the institute last year. She says: “I left the program with a renewed sense of educational purpose and a focus on how we ensure that we teach for true understanding and not just for collection of knowledge.”

Tim Coleman, the Head of Middle School, participated in the Future of Learning Conference at Harvard University in 2016. He explains: “All Project Zero work really aims to ensure that we are developing thinking and understanding in our day-to-day work with our students.

That particular conference examined civic responsibility and global education.”

Coleman revisited those ideas this year with Maureen Ramey, a middle school teacher. They worked together to develop curriculum for Community Connections, a new weekly course that teaches fifth and sixth graders to strengthen their community by slowing down, observing their surroundings, listening to others and sharing stories.

As part of the class, students will participate in Out of Eden Learn, a collaboration between Project Zero and National Geographic.

Out of Eden Learn started in 2013, when Paul Salopek, a journalist and National Geographic Fellow, embarked on an ambitious slow journalism project called the Out of Eden Walk.

Salopek retraced the human migratory pattern on foot. Starting in Ethiopia, he spent months walking through Asia and North America and ending at the tip of South America.

His observations inspired Project Zero to develop a program that encourages students from across the world to exchange perspectives and connect with the worldwide community. When Ramey learned about the program, she was eager to bring it to St. Timothy’s School.

Students in her Community Connections class are getting to know the Raleigh community by walking around, photographing the neighborhood and creating a map. The class is matched with other fifth and sixth grade Out of Eden classrooms in Switzerland, Indonesia, Zambia and other countries to swap stories, discover different viewpoints and bond over common interests.

Through this cultural exchange, Ramey hopes her students will learn that “we are more alike than we are different.”

Project Zero strategies are inspiring creativity in both lower and middle school classrooms at St. Timothy’s School. Austin, Pfeiffer and Ramey teach a range of grades, they share the same goal: to teach for understanding.

Austin reflects on her experience: “Project Zero has truly inspired me to teach for understanding. I want my students to connect to what they are learning in a personal and significant way in order to be able to use what they have learned well beyond my first-grade classroom. When my students have regular opportunities to ‘see, think, and wonder’ and collaborate creatively with their peers, they are curious, engaged, challenged and connected to the learning at hand, increasing the likelihood of a deeper understanding.”

Yasmeen Mustafa ’10 has had a pretty hectic year and a half.

After graduating from North Carolina State University in May 2018, she moved to Cincinnati for work and to be closer to her then fiancé, Nazmi Albadawi. The couple married on December 29, 2018 in Raleigh at the North Ridge Country Club. Soon afterwards, they moved back to Raleigh and learned they are expecting a baby boy in December. Currently, Yasmeen is earning her master’s degree in Healthcare Administration at Liberty University.

She currently lives in D.C., working as a financial planner and strategy analyst for Walmart eCommerce. Caitlin forecasts financial and operational metrics for corporate planning and does data analytics for retail strategy.

Mary Copeland Cain ’09 recently started a job with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team in Park City, Utah.

As an Account Executive on the Marketing team, she works with many partners and suppliers to support the teams and athletes.

In this position, Mary Copeland has opportunities to travel around the world to a wide variety of sponsored events, including the VISA City Big Air Competition.

The competition will take place at the Atlanta Braves Stadium on a 15-story tall steel scaffold jump structure—consisting of approximately 29,000 unique parts and covered with around 800 tons of snow—where the world’s best freeskiers and snowboarders will perform.

Mary Copeland says, “The ‘one team’ mentality runs strong with this group, and to capitalize on that we all work in one building in Park City at the Center of Excellence. From the first floor athlete training center to the third floor marketing, communications and foundation teams, the Center of Excellence is a hub for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team. I have been so impressed by the humble nature of all of the athletes and coaches.”

Kayla Gwaltney ’11 was thrilled to learn that she had been named a Fulbright Fellow. This January she heads to Malaysia to work as an English teaching assistant in a rural high school.

She plans to create an after-school mentorship program for girls at the school. Teach for America offered Kayla a two-year teaching position in eastern North Carolina, which she plans to begin following her fellowship.

Kayla shares that she included her St. Timothy’s education when she applied for both the Fulbright and the teaching position: “I referenced St. Timothy’s in my Teach for America interview and in my personal statement for the Fulbright as an example of the type of education I want ALL children to experience. I gained a comprehensive education at St. Timothy’s—one that instilled in me a life-long love of learning, fostered meaningful friendships and provided mentors who still check on me nearly eight years after graduation!”

Alumna Catherine Carter Turns a Dream into a Reality

Catherine Carter ’09 always aspired to own and run a clothing store, but she didn’t expect her dream to become a reality so quickly.

January 2019 brought cold weather to the North Carolina coast— and an opportunity for Catherine. A family friend told her of a vacant storefront in Atlantic Beach, where Catherine had spent her summers growing up. After much deliberation and with support from family and friends, Catherine took the plunge and launched Gatorbug, an upscale women’s clothing boutique, which celebrated its grand opening in August.

A graduate of the textiles program at NC State, Catherine acquired the skills necessary to run Gatorbug through college courses and internships. One of her most significant internships began in 2017, when Catherine moved to Atlanta, GA to work at a boutique for the summer. By the end of the internship, she had been named manager and co-buyer for the store. Catherine wanted to extend her hands-on education, so she negotiated staying in Atlanta while taking online classes from State. Balancing school and a full-time job was difficult for Catherine, but she is grateful to have been able to continue her training: “It was more work than I would have ever imagined, but I realized that despite how grueling the work can be, having my own boutique one day was my goal.”

Now she and her Chief Operating Officer, cousin Sydney Jarrell, oversee every aspect of business at Gatorbug. In addition to dayto-day operations, Catherine is the boutique’s buyer and stylist.

She and Sydney attend a few buying markets annually to discover new trends and order stock. “To me,” Catherine says, “the best part of owning my own store is getting to pick one-of-a-kind pieces that I know my customers will love. I feel very rewarded when I see how excited my customers get over a beautiful piece I helped them select.”

The challenges that come with operating a small business made Catherine realize that it’s “not for the faint of heart,” but she believes the opportunities balance the challenges. To those thinking about starting their own business, Catherine offers this advice: “Don’t listen to the criticisms; if you have the skill set, in due time you’ll bring your plan to fruition.”

Virtual Reality Comes to STS Each year, the St. Timothy’s School Annual Fund provides resources for faculty “Wish List” items outside the operating budget. One example are the new virtual reality headsets and associated equipment being used across grades and disciplines.

Students are now exploring the world in a whole new way. They’re traveling to international art museums, Grecian ruins and even the depths of the ocean, all without leaving campus.

These innovative, virtual field trips are possible with the new virtual reality headsets. Teachers use an iPad to control what the students see and can tailor the visual experience to their particular learning objectives.

Virtual reality headsets are bringing lessons to life: third graders have explored Hangzhou, China where their penpals live; seventh graders attended festivals around the world to gain inspiration for the setting of realistic fiction stories and eighth graders have viewed exhibitions at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City.

Our Children, Our Future THANK YOU!!!

Over the past two years, countless members of the St. Timothy’s School community have been at work generating enthusiasm, garnering support and raising money for Our Children, Our Future: The Campaign for St. Timothy’s School. Thanks to the generosity of nearly 400 parents, grandparents, alumni and friends, we raised more than $2.4 million in this campaign.

2018-2019 Financial Information

Construction began in late October and already the corner of Rowan and Gates Streets is being transformed. This project expands the School’s campus by 30% in ways that will impact every community member— whether Pre-K, third or eighth grade student, teacher, parent, or visitor.

By the close of spring, St. Timothy’s students—and faculty—will enjoy new outdoor green spaces for learning and for play, including a practice field, loop trail, amphitheater and a brand new Lisa Permar Ham Memorial Playground. Students will assemble at the amphitheater for outdoor classes and performances. All ages will enjoy daily kickball and soccer games, as well as after-school athletic practices, on our field. And recess will occur in a quiet, safe and beautiful setting with new and imaginative equipment.

A Special Dedication Head of School Tim Tinnesz recognizes Karen Campbell for her dedication to and support of the School.

In this issue’s Headmaster’s Letter, I wrote about celebrating our STS community. Alongside this, I must acknowledge someone who, in her 25 years as a parent, an alumni parent and a colleague, contributed in countless ways to keep that community connected—from sending hundreds of college alumni goodie boxes over the years to authoring nearly every Spirit magazine article as far back as most of us can remember.

For all that she has done for and meant to St. Timothy’s School, we dedicate this issue of the Spirit magazine to former Development Assistant Karen Campbell. We are immensely grateful that Karen has experienced a miraculous recovery from a critical head injury she suffered just prior to her retirement last spring and commend her legacy of the deepest commitment to everyone in our community.
