Long before her grandchildren stepped onto the stage for the Christmas Pageant, Holly Childs had already fallen in love with the traditions of St Timothy’s School Her connection to the school began decades ago when her daughters, Frazer Roche ’93, Ellie ’95, and Margot Stanley ’99 were students Today, that love has come full circle as Holly watches her grandchildren, Landon ’25, Harvey ’28, Elsie ’31, and Lucy ’31, delight in the very same traditions that shaped her family’s earliest memories at STS

Few moments bring Holly greater joy than sitting in the audience at the Christmas Pageant, her all-time favorite tradition Each year, she is struck by how little has changedthe familiar songs, the simple costumes, and the unmistakable sense of wonder that fills the room It is a rare tradition that bridges generations, linking Holly’s memories as a young parent to those now being created by her grandchildren When asked about favorite STS memories, each family member immediately named a beloved event: Margot fondly recalls Freddies, Frazer remembers the Pet Parade (Yes, STS used to have a pet parade), and Holly’s heart has always belonged to the Pumpkin Parade and the Pageant Yet when pressed to choose just one, there was no debate. The Christmas Pageant reigns supreme for them all

iin nttradition radition

Beyond these hallmark events, it is the everyday traditions that continue to make St Timothy’s feel so special to the Childs family Cupcake Days, the Hat Parade, the Pumpkin Parade, and Blue and White Day remain much as they were years ago. The campus, uniforms, and even the lunchroom spark a comforting nostalgia, offering a sense of continuity in an ever-changing world. While the school has grown and new buildings have been added, the heart of STS remains steadfast

When Frazer later returned to the area with a child of her own, she knew exactly where to turn She reached out to Admissions Director Cathy Clement, a beloved presence at St Timothy’s and the namesake of the main road through campus, to talk through school options Drawing on her own experiences, the decision was easy

There’s something truly special about watching your children have the same experiences you did,” Frazer shared. Margot echoed the sentiment, adding, “It really feels like home here. The school knows you and your children so well.

St Timothy’s really prepared her for high school,

Frazer said Though they miss the close-knit community where every child is deeply known, the family remains grateful for the strong foundation that made the transition seamless

Leadership Donor Celebration

Each fall, St Timothy’s School proudly gathers to honor the families and friends whose generosity makes an extraordinary difference in the life of the school. The annual Leadership Donor Celebration recognizes those who gave $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund in the previous year a remarkable group of supporters whose commitment helps shape the St Timothy’s experience for every student, every day

This special evening is both a celebration and a sincere expression of gratitude Parents, grandparents, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, former parents, and friends come together as one community, united by a shared belief in the mission and future of St Timothy’s School Their continued support strengthens every aspect of the school, from academic excellence to community life, ensuring students are inspired, supported, and challenged to thrive

At St Timothy’s, every tuition dollar is carefully invested in student success Tuition upholds the school’s 68-year tradition of excellence, but it is the Annual Fund that enables St Timothy’s to go further Annual Fund support fosters expanded professional growth opportunities for teachers, innovative and enriching classroom experiences, enhancements to campus and learning spaces, and the special moments that make St Timothy’s truly extraordinary

This year’s Leadership Donor Celebration was especially meaningful as it was held in the new Hale Hall Pavilion and Plaza, a space made possible by the generosity of Annual Fund supporters This transformative space reflects the spirit of St Timothy’s designed to adapt to the needs of the community as a gathering place for daily snacks and picnic lunches, an inspiring outdoor classroom setting, and a central hub for whole-school community events

The Leadership Donor Celebration serves as a powerful reminder that generosity fuels possibility St Timothy’s is deeply grateful for the leadership, loyalty, and vision of its donors

Through their leadership and generosity, these giving leaders demonstrate how philanthropy amplifies the impact of tuition sustaining excellence today while ensuring the brightest days of St Timothy’s School are still ahead

World Language Teachers often describe the end goals of their work as the “5 C’s” - Communications, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities

Here at St. Timothy’s, our World Language Teachers are dedicated to helping our students develop and deepen each of these aspects of their educational experience. Whether it’s living and learning with a host family in Costa Rica during an immersive Spanish language trip, learning through experience during a Junior Classical League club exercise, or simply increasing language fluency through discussion in our newly introduced High School French 1 class, our program and teachers aim to help our students develop perspectives and skills that will serve them far beyond the walls of St. Timothy’s School.

LOWRANCE

TITLE: Middle School Spanish Teacher

TIME AT STS: 14 years

FROM: Raleigh, North Carolina

-Tim Coleman | Associate Head of School

HIGHER ED: Appalachian State University (Undergrad) | North Carolina State University (Lateral Entry Teaching)

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN BEING AN EDUCATOR?

I have always wanted to teach Growing up, I had some great teachers whom I admired, and I wanted to be just like them I will never forget a 6th-grade science teacher who trusted me to help with the animals in her classroom and even sent me home with 2 baby opossums to raise and release I am not sure she knows the impact that had on me and that she is one of the main reasons I became a teacher

DESCRIBE YOUR CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT...

As much as I crave quiet sometimes, my ideal classroom is not quiet It has the sounds of (productive) conversation, laughter, and, of course, Spanish It looks orderly, but still fun, and is a place with a cool vibe that sparks curiosity and a motivation to learn My classroom has space to sit and work, space to stand up and move around, lots of windows and natural light, with plants (an aquarium with colorful fish would be an amazing addition), a GIANT world map, and wall space to put lots of useful Spanish words and phrases for students to use during class

WHAT DREW YOU TO

STS?

St Timothy’s has always felt like a warm, supportive community where both students and teachers are encouraged to grow academically and personally I was initially drawn to the school through friends and by its central location, but I did not fully understand how special it was until I became part of the faculty Two years later, enrolling my own children here deepened that understanding even more, giving me an even greater appreciation for the school’s mission and the unique care it shows every member of its community

WHAT SPECIAL PROGRAMS ARE YOU INVOLVED IN?

Immersion! Some of my favorite moments of student growth happen on immersion trips Occasionally, a student arrives feeling quiet, reserved, and nervous about the experience During the first few days, I often hear from their parents with understandable concerns: How are they doing? Who are they sitting with on the bus? What are they eating? Can you make sure they have what they need? At the same time, the student may be hesitant to reach out to others or to speak much Spanish In these moments, I have an honest conversation with both the parent and the student I remind parents that their child needs space to navigate challenges, build independence, and learn to self-advocate I also encourage the student to take small risks and trust themselves Almost always, the student rises to the occasion They end up having a wonderful experience and completing the program feeling confident and proud By stepping outside their comfort zone within a safe and supportive environment they discover that they truly have what it takes to succeed

WHY ARE WORLD LANGUAGES IMPORTANT IN SCHOOL?

There are many benefits to learning a second language Beyond strengthening cognitive development, studying another language opens the door to a broader understanding of the world and the people in it A world language course allows students to explore new ways of thinking about language, culture, and perspective As a world language teacher, I have the opportunity to bring grammar, culture, entertainment, history, and everyday vocabulary into a single lesson all in Spanish We often begin class with simple conversations about how we feel, the weather, our plans, or what we did over the weekend These moments enable students to connect while staying in the target language, supporting both communication skills and social-emotional learning in a meaningful way

FAVORITE STS TRADITION?

I love Halloween at STS! I am not sure who loves Halloween at school the most: faculty or students? The group costumes we come up with within the faculty kick off the fall and winter holiday season with a bang, and I look forward to that day every year Being able to celebrate and acknowledge seasons and holidays by decorating our classrooms with fun activities and annual traditions at school is such a fun and simple pleasure that I hope I never take for granted

LET US KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU!

I am a Raleigh native I met my husband when we were 6th graders at Martin Middle School We have two grown children who are both STS alumni and current students at NC State We have two beloved dogs and two cats who all follow me around everywhere at home They are my groupies I have lots of family in town, and my best friends are my 3 siblings. I love spending time with my friends and family, reading, yoga, walking, traveling, and singing with my band, The Circus. I have lots of activities that I love to do, but my most guilty pleasure after a very busy day is to watch a series on streaming TV

WHAT MUNDANE SUPERPOWER DO YOU WISH YOU HAD?

Instantly knowing where the remote is or never having wet socks I also really wish I could play the piano by ear!

Hayden

HOLT

TITLE: Middle School Spanish Teacher

TIME AT STS: 9 years

FROM: Connecticut

HIGHER ED: Rollins College (Undergrad) | Albertus Magnus College (Master’s)

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN BEING AN EDUCATOR?

I fell in love with the Spanish language and culture when I was 14 and spent the summer with a family in Morelia, Mexico I have since studied in Spain, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Panamá I read and watch everything I can in Spanish and love taking my family to Spanish-speaking countries For my first job, I was part of the line production of Naked Feet shoes that were being made in Spain, and when the company folded three months after I started, I began teaching Spanish at Vero Beach High School It was a huge learning curve since I did not have student teaching experience, but I absolutely loved it and connected with the students Since then, I became certified to teach grades 6-12 and earned double master’s degrees in Leadership and Liberal Studies I love a liberal arts education!

DESCRIBE YOUR CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT...

The ideal classroom experience is loud and pretty much organized chaos, with students taking risks and using the language There's joy, laughter, and brain breaks Language teachers don't always make the best neighbors!

WHAT DREW YOU TO STS?

I love that STS starts Spanish in Pre-K. It is so important to develop pronunciation, confidence, and growth at a young age. When students are accustomed to hearing and using Spanish early on, it does not seem "foreign" by the time they reach upper elementary We also have an amazing department, and I knew it would be a great place to teach since my children were also starting here when we moved from Connecticut nine years ago

WHAT SPECIAL PROGRAMS ARE YOU INVOLVED IN?

I love taking students into the community to bring Spanish alive It's so easy to tie field trips to Spanish curriculum as Raleigh has a ton to offer. For example, we sample pan dulce at Panadería La Espiga, a Mexican bakery, and search for Hispanic foods at International Foods We have also hosted Alejo, an exchange student from Guatemala

SHARE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR TITAN STUDENTS

FAVORITE STS TRADITION?

Greet the Week!! The entire school is together, and it's the best!

LET US KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU!

Married 21 years Mom to STS Alums Jack ‘22 and Reed ’24

They both speak Spanish and love to travel as well We have a 5-year-old English Golden Retriever named Mookie who is an absolute love

IF YOUR LIFE HAD A THEME SONG, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

When students communicate or understand Spanish in a real-world setting, they feel really proud They are usually scared or nervous, but once they realize it's ok to make mistakes and when they are understood, it encourages them to keep going. WHY ARE WORLD LANGUAGES IMPORTANT IN SCHOOL?

My Spanish theme song would be "Vivir Mi Vida" by Marc Anthony because it's a great anthem for loving life and teaching with passion.

Nelly

PALMER

TITLE: Lower School Spanish Teacher

TIME AT STS: Two years

FROM: Peru

HIGHER ED: Sacred Heart University (Undergrad) | Catholic University of Peru (Master’s Degree)

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN BEING AN EDUCATOR?

I was the third of five siblings, and I had two younger brothers I loved helping with my siblings' homework and checking their grades I organized theatrical performances with the neighborhood kids and tutored my neighbors and my brothers' friends I acted like the teacher of the younger kids in the neighborhood Working as a teacher for a year solidified my calling as an educator when I saw that my students learned and were grateful for my work as a teacher

DESCRIBE YOUR CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT...

My ideal classroom environment is one that engages students It is filled with students who are excited to learn and feel drawn to the activities that are being taught. It meshes education with fun so that the lessons truly create an atmosphere for learning.

WHAT DREW YOU TO STS?

St Timothy's is like a big family to me From the very first day I started working there, I felt a sense of warmth and was welcomed quickly Everyone cares about each other and is always willing to help when a colleague needs it Our leaders and supervisors are great examples of simplicity and humility The focus on values-based education and the small class sizes allows students to learn effectively and receive personalized instruction

WHAT SPECIAL PROGRAMMING DO YOU HOPE TO ADD?

An idea for a program would be a pen pal program between Peruvian Spanish young speakers and St Timothy’s students

Another idea is a Latin America club that teaches Latin American tradition, food, music, and places This club could also travel to different places in Latin America, including Spain and Brazil

SHARE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR TITAN STUDENTS...

I believe that my students are now comfortable communicating a little bit of Spanish during class They remember vocabulary that they learned in class, and they have successfully memorized songs for fun!

WHY ARE WORLD LANGUAGES IMPORTANT IN SCHOOL?

Teaching world languages is important in school because it is the cornerstone of communication Being able to talk with individuals who live in different countries around the world is paramount to building community and developing relationships with various cultures Developing world language skills also helps to strengthen the understanding of native

language learning by cultivating more neuron pathways in the brain

The struggle in world language learning builds compassion for others who are also learning new languages. Students can then understand these difficulties when people who are learning English are struggling to speak, and they can help them through these challenges

FAVORITE STS TRADITION?

My favorite STS tradition is the pie in the face at Greet the Week I think it is funny, and it is great to see that teachers aren’t afraid to participate in the voting at the Fall Festival to get pied in the face

LET US KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU!

I have been married for 23 years to my husband John Palmer, and I have a lovely daughter who finished college last May I also like to travel, I like to refinish furniture from old to new, and I like to take walks with my family

WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET?

I would have dinner with Franklin D Roosevelt The first thing I would ask is for tips to solve the economic problems for my country, Peru, and what economic programs would be helpful to increase economic progress in Peru

I was drawn to St Timothy’s commitment to small classes and academic excellence I have high expectations for my students, and I know that at STS, they will rise to the challenge

WHAT SPECIAL PROGRAMS ARE YOU INVOLVED IN?

I sponsor the STS chapter of the National Junior Classical League (NJCL), which is a club focused on classical civilization and language I am particularly enthusiastic about Certāmen, the academic competition league in NJCL

SHARE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR TITAN STUDENTS...

While there are many individual moments in teaching that fit this question, the most rewarding to me is when I see Latin and French students transfer skills from our class to their other classes. I am proud when they tell me that they recognized a word by its Latin root, were able to describe habeas corpus in their Civics class, or made their own flashcards when studying for a test

WHY ARE WORLD LANGUAGES IMPORTANT IN SCHOOL?

Learning another language offers more benefits than just being able to hold a conversation It expands our understanding of what it means to communicate and strengthens our problem-solving and critical-thinking skills

Learning another language also introduces us to the culture and history of other countries - even ancient civilizations

Sammy(15yearsold)

Through exposure to other cultures, language learners demonstrate higher levels of empathy. I believe that world languages are an intrinsic part of a young person’s education

FAVORITE STS TRADITION?

Not sure yet since this is my first year!

LET US KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU!

I have two cats, and I recently joined the North Carolina Master Chorale WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE WOULD YOU WANT TO MEET?

Lately, I’ve thought about how interesting it would have been to meet Pliny the Elder Unlike his uncommonly dull nephew (Pliny the Younger), Pliny the Elder led an utterly ridiculous life Amid his day job as a naval commander, he wrote the first encyclopedia He was so intrigued by the world around him that his days revolved around reading and learning I suppose that curiosity got him in the end, but what stories he could tell!

FAST FACTS

WHO: Eddy Davis

TITLE: Director of Auxiliary Programs

FROM: Providence, Rhode Island

HIGHER ED: Utica University

Why is the Director of Auxiliary Programs important for STS?

Ideally, to make ASC an extension of the school day. For the students and families to have a safe, nurturing place for community, learning, and engaging with others in a meaningful way!

What sparked your interest in this field of work?

I have had a lifelong obsession with working with youth. I was a basketball player, coach, and overall sports junkie from the time I can remember, and I started working basketball camps at age 15. From there, my interest in working with youth has not wavered. I was drawn to helping students in independent schools enjoy the whole day, realizing that after-school programming is sometimes overlooked, and trying to map out the best way(s) in which it can have a bigger and more meaningful effect on campus. I have made lifelong friends along the way and learned from some amazing people at each stop, but the goal has always remained the same; to give the students I work with the feeling of family and joy, wonder, adventure, and safety, all while learning how to navigate this world in a kind, nurturing way, so they feel confident to take on the world and know they have at least one person behin them who will always be there to help along the way!

What drew you specifically to St. Timothy’s mission and educational philosophy?

What drew me specifically to St. Timothy's mission and educational philosophy was the sense of community and acceptance. Since I arrived at STS, the community has welcomed me with open arms. The faculty, staff, parents, and students I have interacted with have reinforced my belief in this position and what it can bring to the STS community, making it stronger every day.

What excites you most about the After School Care (ASC) and Camps Programs?

I am excited about the opportunity for growth for the ASC and Camp programming. My goal is to take what ASC has already built within the community, fine-tune some things, create new programming, and ensure that all of our community is heard in what they would like us to bring to campus. For camps, expanding the brand by making the greater Raleigh community more aware of STS and all we bring to the community is another big focus of mine. I really like hitting the pavement and getting to know my community, so I am very excited to see what summer camps and summer programming will look like as we begin a brand refresh and expansion.

Timothy’s

Do you have a favorite STS tradition yet?

It is a toss-up for me. The Pumpkin Parade in the gym was amazing, and the Halloween costumes are all top-notch here, from students to faculty. The other would be the Christmas Pageant. The preparation, the joy, and the tradition shown to the STS community are wonderful! It was a joy to hear the students be so proud of their hard work and excited to show their families what they have done!

Any other information you want to share?

I would like to thank the STS community for really living the mission and the school's goals and values, and I am excited to be a small part of the school's growth and expansion.

What historical figure would you want to meet?

If I could have dinner with a historical figure, it would be Muhammad Ali. I think he is such a strong figure in the boxing ring and in life, and I hope to have a small bit of that in myself. The first thing I would ask him would be how he maintained his positivity when his world seemed to be crashing around him.

If your life had a theme song, what would it be and why?

My theme song would be I'm Dope by Tobe Nwigwe. When I was in the hospital with cancer, I had to have multiple surgeries, and this song was the only thing that calmed me down and made me feel confident enough that I would be alright before and after each one.

Personal Details:

I am a cancer survivor and an uncle of two My nephew Quincy, who is my best friend, is seven years old, and my niece Raegan, is one and a half years old She doesn't know it yet, but she is also my best friend. I love basketball, music, and cooking. When I am not on campus, I am watching, listening, or doing a combination of those things.

C L U S Journeys of self discovery B

"Our classrooms lay the groundwork for academic success, but our clubs are where students embark on journeys of self-discovery As students engage in these clubs, they not only pursue their passions but also cultivate essential soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, and effective communication The invaluable experience gained in these settings helps to prepare them for future challenges, both in and out of school

The success of our clubs is made possible by the unwavering commitment of our exceptional faculty, who go above and beyond to share their time, expertise, and personal passions with our students Their involvement enriches the club experience and strengthens the bonds between teachers and students We offer 16 different clubs, allowing students to choose a new club each trimester to explore different interests"

"I started the Dollars and Sense Club this year because I noticed a need for students to learn more about financial literacy in a practical and meaningful way In this club, students are learning how to budget and invest, understanding how the stock market works, and even thinking about what it takes to start a business Our students are participating in a stock market challenge where each student manages a $10,000 virtual portfolio. They are buying and selling up to five stocks each week using real-time values from the NYSE We've been very fortunate to have parent guest speakers join us to talk about careers in financial planning, leadership, marketing, and sales. These speakers have helped students connect these skills to real and future career opportunities! Each trimester, I really try to personalize our club topics around what students are most interested in learning about, and my hope is that we can continue to bring in more parents and alumni speakers in the future!"

Creating Zen Club was a response to what many of my middle school students expressed they wanted built into their school day: time away from the constant noise and stimulation of middle school, space for quiet and recentering, and opportunities for low-key fellowship and meaningful conversation Since then, Zen Club has grown into a community of students who value a tech-free environment where they can slow down and be fully present Together, we explore techniques that promote self-regulation, reduce stress, and foster new friendships Through breathing exercises, mindful meditation, yoga stretches, body scans, mandala coloring, watercolor painting, puzzles and, occasionally, warm tea and cookies students build a toolbox of strategies they can draw upon when they need calm and focus amid the everyday bustle of school life

When I first started Zen Club, I had no real clarity of what the outcome would be or how students might respond to the mindful practices we explored. What has become clear, however, is how deeply they value learning how to get “zen” This impact is especially evident in several 8th-grade Zen Club members who are dedicating their Genius Hour projects in Ms Saunders’ science class to creating a mini Zen Club for lower school students, where they share their own experiences with mindfulness and teach age-appropriate self-regulation strategies Their leadership speaks to the lasting influence of Zen Club, and the meaningful ripple effect occurs when students are given the time, space, and tools to care for themselves with intention and awareness

The Environmentalism Club at St Timothy’s is a student-led group rooted in hands-on learning, leadership, and care for the planet Members help steward the Learning Garden and Greenhouse growing plants while exploring conservation, innovation, and service in action Each year, club students mentor and teach lower school classes, planting seeds of stewardship and responsibility for the world around them Through research, sustainable practices, and creative problem-solving, the Environmentalism Club serves as a driving force in keeping St. Timothy’s at the forefront of environmentally friendly, forward-thinking education.

A Family Legacy A Community Impact

From building the first playground to running book fairs, from pioneering auctions to sustaining beloved traditions, the Lumpkin family’s impact on Friends of St Timothy’s School is woven into the fabric of the institution. Lynda’s leadership helped shape the foundation; Jennifer’s continues to build upon it.

Together, they exemplify what it means to lead with generosity, vision, and heart Their story is not just one of service, but of relationships formed over lunches, carpool rides, chapel pews, and countless volunteer hours that last a lifetime

That is the true legacy of leadership: when commitment spans generations, traditions endure, and a school community is forever stronger because of it

CALLED TO SERVE

THE REV. STEVEN MCCAIN

On November 15, 2025, I was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church It is difficult to put into words what I felt that day, but it was one of the most sacred and affirming moments of my life When I returned to school the following Monday, many well-meaning faculty, staff, students, and families offered an assortment of congratulatory phrases: “We’re proud of you,” “Congratulations on your promotion!” or even “How many more promotions until you’re the head of the church?” I have to admit that the last question caught me off guard!

As I’ve reflected on what a deacon is and our role in the church, I’ve come to realize that this isn’t a promotion at all Rather, it is a demotion of sorts where we vow to become servants of the church and the world

In the Episcopal Church, deacons are clergy with a very particular calling - to serve. This vocation is rooted deeply in the Bible The first example is Jesus himself, who “took the form of a servant,” humbled himself, and showed us what true love and service of God and neighbor look like (Philippians 2:1-11) Jesus plainly told his disciples that he didn’t come to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45) In following this

example, deacons are not elevated above others but are called to humility, service, and self-giving love

The second example is Stephen from Acts 6:1-6 As the early apostles devoted themselves to prayer and preaching the good news of Jesus Christ, the needs of the poor, sick, and vulnerable were being overlooked In response, the apostles appointed Stephen and others as deacons to ensure that no one was forgotten Their ministry was to tend to the physical and practical needs of their community, especially those who needed it most

At its core, the vocation of a deacon echoes one of the tenets in our Portrait of a Titan: Love and serve God and one another Day after day, our students, faculty, staff, and families show me what it means to live out this calling of compassion, love, and service

Lord willing, I will be ordained as a priest this summer This, too, is a call to a particular kind of service I am grateful to serve and be shaped by both St Timothy’s Episcopal Church and School, where loving and serving God and one another is not just a motto, but a lived reality each day

Sisters Ava Spencer ‘20 and Harper Spencer ‘21 have carried the spirit of leadership they first cultivated at St. Timothy’s School into their years at Saint Mary’s School with remarkable success Ava served as senior class president, guiding her class with confidence and heart then, in a true STS-style legacy moment, she passed the torch the very next year to her sister, Harper, who stepped into the same role. Their back-to-back presidencies reflect not only their individual strengths but also the foundation of character, service, and leadership built during their years at St. Timothy’s School.

Ava and Harper’s accomplishments are a proud reminder of the lasting impact of a St Timothy’s education Their journey from our hallways to becoming consecutive senior class high school presidents is a wonderful example of how St. Timothy’s students continue to shine, inspire, and lead wherever they go.
