Note from the Editor

As the third trimester draws to a close, everyone is gearing up for end-of-year celebrations. These last few months have offered an opportunity for us to reflect on the obstacles our community has overcome and the many successes we have celebrated.

One word that sums up the 2020-2021 school year is reimagine.

We have found creative solutions for teaching in-person during a pandemic. Our traditions—including Blue and White Day, the Christmas Pageant and Balloon Day—continued in different formats than in years past. We have even reimagined the way our campus looks with the opening of the new field, West Family Court, Diab Ampitheatre and the reinvented Lisa Permar Ham Playground.

Playing the long game often means taking it one day at a time—which, incidentally, is the single phrase I’ve used most in the last year. In the 2020-21 school year, we’ve faced some difficult moments. Members of our STS community have been ill with COVID-19—some with lingering effects still today. Some have lost loved ones to this pandemic. Well over 100 students, teachers and parents have had to navigate 14-day quarantines (sometimes more than once)—the cost of safe and successful inperson schooling this year.

I cannot imagine being prouder of, or more grateful for, our St. Timothy’s community of colleagues, students, families, alumni and friends near and far for all that we’ve accomplished in this extraordinary year. Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do. Our students, our school and, certainly, our headmaster are all the better for it.

Third Graders Design Mars Rovers

P

erseverance, the fifth rover from the Earth sent to Mars, landed on February 18, 2021, almost seven months after it left Earth. Inspired by this feat of scientific ingenuity, the third grade teachers revamped the annual Mars rover project to teach the students about the engineering design process.

Third graders study space as a part of their curriculum. After learning about the basics of space and our planetary system, the students watched a recording of NASA landing their new rover on Mars. The footage shows the heat shield protecting the rover as it entered the atmosphere, then a parachute opening to slow its decent.

The students were tasked with designing two objects: a rover attached to the parachute and a rover carrying cargo. The aim for the first project was to protect the rover, or glass ornament, as it was dropped down a staircase.

Third graders used recycled materials, such as plastic bags for parachutes and cotton balls and bubble sheeting for protective gear for their rovers.

The second project was to create a cardboard rover that could travel a long distance over rough terrain while protecting its “cargo,”or a penny and an astronaut figurine. After making models, the students tested them in the hallway by letting the rovers go down a ramp and roll across the floor.

That’s when the engineering design process came into play. Once they tried the experiment, students could rethink and tinker with their models to improve the design. The third graders tested the models again, then went back to make more improvements. This circular process teaches students how to keep refining the original idea to create an improved product.

The hands-on experiments were a huge hit— and the third grade teachers may have inspired future aerospace engineers!

Sixth Graders Share Their Stories “Write what you know” is a common mantra among writers. During literature class, sixth grade students put the saying to the test by writing their own personal narratives. COVID-19 Is Real

I sit upon my cozy chair traveling to different worlds all while being right there. In my hands I hold a book. All tattered and scarred it may be, but really it is all I need. I let the words upon the page consume me as they take me to different places. Places I never knew. I read the words upon the page, sitting on the edge of my seat, as I wait to see what will happen next.

Excitement gushes through me like the water of the stream. My mind is full of curiosity as I wonder what the next event will be.

Many people even to this day don’t think COVID-19 is a big deal. They don’t wear masks when they are supposed to, get close up to everyone and don’t realize how deadly this pandemic is. My uncle Grant is an ER doctor that has three young children and a wife named Melissa. About seven months ago we got a call that he was diagnosed with COVID-19. He was in the hospital and couldn’t breathe. He got a bit better and then he got worse.

There were waves of good and bad days.

I solve the mysteries and fight the battles with Harry and Hermione by my side. I let adventure take me with Edward Tulane on his crazy, wild ride. I walk with Salva and feel his pain as if we are one. I play with Jacob the boy who appeared and watch him have his fun. The words I read are the adventures I have. The characters I meet are the friends I will always keep.

The character references in “The Company of a Good Book” are from the following: the Harry Potter series, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” “A Long Walk to Water” and “The Boy on the Porch.”

My eyes dance across the pages scattered by letters. Comprehending the words as I go. My mind is an ocean of imagination. The chapters of the book are like the waves at the beach—through my brain, they flow. In my mind’s movie, I see the characters pout and the characters plea.

My book is the perfect companion. I laugh, and I cry. The characters and me, we see eye to eye. I grow more knowledgeable, my feet in their shoes. By reading a book, I have got nothing to lose. The life of the book adds to the life within me. When you’ve got a good book, it truly is all you need.

Soon after he had to get intubated. This was hard for their entire family. The children were miserable and Melissa was trying to get him the best care since she is a doctor, too, and has many connections. He was intubated for 70 days and was in the hospital for 100 days. We were in the mountains when we heard my dad’s phone say “Grant Lashley.” We got a call from him, we first thought we misunderstood and it was my brother Graham who was calling us. “Hello?” “Hello,” Grant said. I remember my mom and I were looking at each other silently and just smiling from ear to ear.

During the time he was in the hospital he also self-diagnosed a kidney stone. The doctors then realized he had a stroke while being in a coma and he couldn’t move the left side of his body. He got moved to a really good rehab facility in Houston, Texas. His day came! He walked out of the hospital with a walker and an oxygen tank but he was walking out and he saw his family. He was on the news and he talked about how people need to wear masks and wash their hands. COVID-19 is real. Please do all of your safety measures.

A Family Reunion from a Dog’s Point of View

By Margaret Roberson Drat, I thought as I put my head on my paws and looked out the window. They’re always outside. Why is it, whenever my humans have an event, I have to stay locked up inside the house with almost-deaf cat, Willis? I decided after 20 minutes of moping to terrorize Edwardo the hamster. I then had second thoughts about it. Too bad he’s in a cage. Maybe talk to Willis? Nah, he’ll yell when he wants to tell me something. I could go talk to that pretty dog, Winnie. Yeah, I’ll do that. I walked along the narrow little hallway to find her. Then I saw a flash of creamish-yellow glide past the window outside.

THAT’S WINNIE!!! Gosh, this was so unfair. The kitty door was too tiny to get through to go outside. Unfortunately, the humans got Willis years before they got me and Winnie. They got us three whole years ago and still haven’t put a doggy door in.

I shook the ridiculous get-up off and bolted away as soon as I could while Willis sat there and chewed on the bathrobe’s sash. I squeezed my little Jack Russell body through Willis’s door (I am so amazed at how that behemoth of a cat can fit through it) and ran to jump on all the guests.

“BAXTER! COME PLAY DWESS-UP WITH ME!” Eliza yelled. She was the youngest of the family. The tall humans, Jane and Peter, had Eliza three years ago. The oldest kid-human was Sam. He was 12 and quite surly.

All he wanted to do is play on that I-Box or whatever.

There was another boy named Ricky, who was five, and Kate, who was nine. Kate was the best. I always curled up in her bed and she read books to me at night. She took me on walks with her friend, Caroline, and her dog, Rudy. I imagined walking on a beautiful beach, sand between my paws, the salty breeze hitting my fuzzy face. I felt a giant yank on my collar and my lovely daydream melted away. Oh, goody. Eliza.

“How was Eliza?” She asked.

“Baxter, you’re gonna be a pwince and I’m gonna be a faiwy pwincess. You hafta come up and wescue me fwom Wiwwis the evil wizawd.” She held up Willis who had an old party hat and an Eliza-sized bathrobe on. He did not look happy. Willis was at least 15 pounds, so I was absolutely astonished that Eliza could pick him up.

“Eliza, come on, bring Baxter up. We can play with him for ten minutes and then you need to go down for a nap.” called Jane from upstairs. I sighed as Eliza dragged me up the stairs. By the time she had finished dressing me up, I had a beret with a feather on my head. I had a crown in front of it. I felt stupid.

I looked stupid. I looked even worse than Willis did in the Cinderella and Snow White bathrobe and party hat. Oh, how I longed to be outside with the humans and all those hotdogs. And fried chicken. And hush puppies. And all the Southern food you can think of. All. On. That. One. Table. All I had to do was to get out of Eliza’s sickeningly pink room and go see the humans.

“Ack! Peter! Baxter got out!” I heard Jane yell as I got iced tea spilled on my head by Great-Aunt Mildred.

I’ve never cared for her. Peter tried to grab me but I was too fast. I ate half my weight in hot dogs then threw up all over Grandma Jo’s shoes. That was a perk. Then, you know what I saw? Huh? Huh? Huh? Canyaguesscanyaguess??? Alright, I’ll give you a hint…

WINNIE!!!!!! I went up and “hugged” her (or tried to) and we started talking.

“The usual,” I grimaced, “I don’t think that kid’s ever gonna change. Wait, how’d you know I was upstairs with the pint-sized terror?”

“Give her time! I knew you were upstairs because I heard some growling and some incredibly imaginative dialogue, with something about Willis turning her into a mushroom?” Winnie snorted. I laughed.

“I sometimes feel like Willis is gonna turn everyone into a mushroom. Anyway, you wanna pig out on this stuff?”

“Ugh, no. I was told to stay on the porch because I ruined the chicken and hot dog table. I’m too full, anyway.” Winnie sniffed.

“Ok. Hey, there’s Aunt Delilah’s dog! Come on, Winnie!” I tugged on her tail.

“Nah, I’ve always thought Blossom was kind of a snob.

Anyway, I’m getting cold. I’m gonna go lay down in the sun.” Winnie slunk over to a sunny spot in the backyard.

I sighed. Winnie was getting older, I guessed. I went over and ate what was left of the hot dogs, fried chicken, and tried some iced tea for the first time. Yuck. When I started feeling sluggish after eating all that food and running around, chasing Blossom, one of my humans picked me up and put me in my crate inside. Winnie came in soon after and lay down right next to me. She licked me to sleep. My eyelids dropped and I went straight into a wonderful dream. About biting Great-Aunt Mildred.

ne of the most important things we’ve learned over the past year is that community is invaluable. And not just our St. Timothy’s family, but also our neighbors, extended families and essential workers that are keeping our society running during the pandemic. Throughout the second and third trimesters, students have participated in various projects to give back to our local community.

tudents at St. Timothy’s are letting their imaginations run wild. During fine and performing arts classes, children are encouraged to express their creativity through visual arts, drama and music.

First graders began the third trimester by studying the very first artists: cave dwellers. Laura Bierer, who teaches pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, showed students how to use dried clay as crayons to create paintings.

After learning color theory, first graders created Aboriginal Australian art.

Third graders worked on various projects throughout the year, including their own renditions of The Starry Night

by Vincent van Gogh, colorful drawings of their houses and intricate sarcophagi.

To make a realistic dinosaur landscape, second graders learned various techniques. Bierer said, “I taught them many artist ‘tricks’ to make their artwork look more sophisticated and realistic. They began by practicedrawing their dinosaur out of shapes.

After studying art by famous abstract artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, fourth graders harnessed their creativity to create abstract portraits with imaginative shapes and colors.

They also discovered Mola—colorful, geometric textile designs created by the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands.

Bierer took the fifth graders all across the world during their art classes.

Students drew inspiration from African relief art to create foil relief mask images. After looking at ancient Egyptian art, students created selfportaits in a similar style. They also looked at American artists Eric Carle, known for writing and illustrating The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Andy Warhol, a famous pop artist.

Since the students were unable to show off their masterpieces like they usually do during the art fair at the Open House, Bierer created a virtual art show.

Parents were able to see their children’s favorite works of art.

Moving to an online format spurred Balentine to think of new ways to teach the principles of art. Sixth graders played with color theory to create works of art using only warm or cool colors.

The students were also introduced to the basics of graphic design. During class, sixth graders learned about the process behind designing a brand logo.

Then, they were tasked with creating a logo for a fictional business.

Balentine expanded on the principles of color theory and graphic design for her seventh grade students. After studying how the use of color can affect a composition, the young artists created monochromatic digital art. They also designed their own movie posters using everything they learned about color, design and character placement. In addition, seventh graders learned about American artist Wayne Thiebaud, who is known for creating paintings of cakes, ice cream sundaes, pies and other sweet treats.

The projects for eighth graders are designed to show that the students understand several art concepts before they move on to high school. Students demonstrate their proficency with perspective, color, shape and value by creating watercolors, pen and ink drawings and other artwork.

A New Chapter After dedicating a combined total of 30 years of teaching St. Timothy’s School students, three beloved teachers are taking the next step—retirement. We will miss seeing them in the classrooms every day and we wish them long, healthy and happy retirements!

Kim Balentine ’77 has taught middle school art at STS for the past 18 years. After inspiring creativity in countless STS students, Balentine is turning over a new leaf.

Balentine has no plans to slow down—she will still create art for her company, KimB Originals.

Her work is on display at 311 Gallery and For Your Convenience in Raleigh; Mattie King Davis Art Gallery in Beaufort; and Z and Z Designs in Morehead City.

Balentine was the feature artist in the Tall Ship Race in Cowes, Isle of Wight in 2003, was recognized in the September 2016 issue of Southwest Art Magazine and was featured in the April 2021 issue of Raleigh Magazine.

Balentine leaves behind a lasting legacy at STS. She began debate, film, drama and social-emotional learning (previously called game of life) classes for the middle school, as well as teaching art.

When not painting, Balentine will be down at the coast in Morehead City with her family.

After nine years of teaching middle school Latin at St. Timothy’s, Mary Cerrato is beginning a new chapter in her life.

She will be moving to Ohio after the school year to be with her husband, Reverend John Cerrato.

During her time at St. Timothy’s, Cerrato turned Latin class into a hands-on experience. By reading books, drawing a centurion helmet, hosting a Roman-inspired banquet, baking a traditional Roman cake for the 2773rd birthday celebration of the city and taking several former St. Timothy’s students and parents on an immersive trip across England, Cerrato has made the Latin curriculum come to life each year.

Cerrato says, “I would like to thank the STS community and to wish everyone the best in the future.”

After completing her 36th year in education, Janice Hemric will be retiring from her position as a prekindergarten assistant and moving to Southport, NC, where she and her husband have been building a house.

Hemric doesn’t have plans to stop working—she will take over the accounting department in the family’s safety supply distribution business. Hemric will also help plan her two daughters’ weddings.

She says, “It has been my great pleasure to be a part of St. Timothy’s over the past three years. There is no other administration under whom I have worked that has communicated so well with or been so attentive to the needs of their faculty, students and families. I am proud to have become an STS Titan, and I will be taking a piece of St. Timothy’s with me in my heart when I move on to the next purpose God is placing in my life. Thank you, St. Timothy’s, for welcoming me three years ago and for helping me make the closing of this school year one filled with special memories.”

Remembering a Legend

“

I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew.”

One of Carolyn Hale’s favorite hymns was sung during every Chapel service at St. Timothy’s School before the pandemic. When we return to in-person services and hear the St. Timothy’s School students joyously singing “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God,” we’ll remember the life and legacy of Carolyn Hale.

In 1956, Carolyn Hale and her husband, Father George Hale, moved to Raleigh from Memphis, Tennessee when Fr. Hale agreed to became the rector at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church—with a condition. Fr. Hale wanted to sell the building, located downtown, and build a new church in a developing part of town. The vestry found a five-acre plot on Six Forks Road and decided that location would be ideal for the newly renamed St. Timothy’s Church.

By 1957, the church was up and running and the Hales were ready to expand. Carolyn Hale knocked on doors in the Drewry Hills neighborhood to tell folks of the new church school in the area. She taught the first kindergarten class of 16 students at St. Timothy’s

School the following September.

For the next 18 years, Carolyn Hale remained at the school as a kindergarten teacher. She became the Director of Admissions in 1978, a position that she held until her retirement in 1993.

Carolyn and Fr. Hale both loved gardening, and they dove into the passion during retirement. In the wooded area of their home, they created a beautiful natural garden bursting with azaleas and perennials. The pair also enjoyed traveling, and visited countries all over the world.

Following her retirement, she remained a steadfast supporter of St. Timothy’s School.

When the school celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2003, Carolyn and Fr. Hale were honored and awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the Governor of NC, given for extraordinary service to the state of North Carolina.

During the Founders’ Day 60th Anniversary Celebration, Carolyn Hale entertained the crowd with stories about the founding and early days at St. Timothy’s School.

Carla Pasi, parent of two St. Timothy’s School alumnae and a personal friend of the Hales, said, “Carolyn was a true Southern Magnolia, a terrific bridge player and loved by so many friends.”

Head of School Tim Tinnesz fondly remembered the co-founder of St. Timothy’s School: “There are few people in this world that I genuinely admire as much as Carolyn Hale. She was wise, faithful, strong, caring, and she had a wonderful sense of humor that I always enjoyed in our visits and conversations over the years. Most importantly, we all benefit from her legacy today. Without Carolyn Hale, there would be no St. Timothy’s School.”

Carolyn Hale passed away on March 3, 2021 and was laid to rest during a private ceremony at St. Timothy’s Church.

From Vision to Reality

T

he wait is finally over: after announcing the long-range campus master plan in the spring of 2017, the new multi-use field is open for students to enjoy.

The expansion of St. Timothy’s has been a project more than two decades in the making. The Board of Trustees, with former Head of School Mike Bailey, began the process in 2000, when he acquired a property on Gates Street. By 2003, St. Timothy’s owned two properties. The Board of Trustees, with current Head of School Tim Tinnesz, continued the acquisition process by purchasing a third property in 2014.

Plans began to be finalized during 2018, when we received preliminary approval for the expansion from the City of Raleigh and initial demolition started. The construction team removed trees from the lots, surveyed the land, disconnected utilities and performed an asbestos abatement.

To celebrate the momentous occasion that was years in the making, the entire school attended an informal groundbreaking ceremony. After Tinnesz addressed the crowd, Father Allen Waller led the school community in prayer and began the ceremonious shoveling of the dirt. Student Council President John Michael Waite, Vice President Dugan Stewart, and Secretary Joe Swain followed suit with Board members Joseph Diab, Steve Dixon and Webster West close behind.

Tinnesz closed the ceremony by shoveling dirt and taking a selfie with the gathered community.

Before heading back to class, the Lower School and Middle School filled two time capsules with small items that represented today’s generation.

The time capsules will be buried at a later date and will be opened in 25 years.

Construction hit a few snags, namely the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and poor weather.

However, those obstacles were overcome and on Monday, April 12, 2021, St. Timothy’s School celebrated the completion of the outdoor space which includes the reimagined Lisa Permar Ham Memorial Playground, the West Family Court, the Diab Amphitheatre, a multi-use field, a loop trail and a field house with restrooms and storage.

The eighth graders were among the first to enjoy the field, spending the time allotted for Advisory exploring the new outdoor area. Other grades followed their normal snack or recess schedule to play on the structures, field and track.

This 1.5 acres of new outdoor space would not have been possible without the support of our generous community: parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, Board members, neighbors and friends of the school. Thank you all for helping to make this vision come to life.

Everyone is enjoying the campus expansion: eighth grader Lola Holderness said, “I love how it opens up the campus and it will make outside learning a lot easier. I also love the new amphitheatre so drama classes can finally perform outside on a real stage. The field will make an excellent place for outdoor gym class with the running track, the basketball goal and the green, grassy field. Overall, I absolutely love the new field and I am looking forward to enjoying the outdoor space!”

Eighth grader Leo Molinoff said, “Although the field and playground took quite a while to build, the result was absolutely worth the wait. I am so excited to be able to play on the new setup!”

Tinnesz said, “These expansive new outdoor spaces have not only transformed our campus, but—even more importantly—they’ve made a huge impact on the daily experience for our students. Every day, students of all ages are enjoying recesses, P.E. classes, picnic lunches, after-school sports practices and more. They’ve been thrilled…and so have we!”

Helping Along the Way:

Teaching & Learning Coordinators

E

very child at St. Timothy’s School is known and loved. That concept isn’t just something that we talk about—the school actively promotes individualized learning at all grade levels.

O’Keefe makes sure every Lower School student gets the support they need.

Some children learn best through seeing the material, others learn by listening to the information. Some enjoy learning in a group setting and others prefer to study alone. During lessons, teachers implement various methods to engage their students. To help teachers meet the many needs of their students, the Teaching and

Learning Coordinators—affectionately referred to as TLCs—offer support to students who need it.

Caitlin O’Keefe and Mary Margaret Roy, the respective Lower School and Middle School TLCs, share an office on the first floor of the main building. The office is a hive of activity; during most of the school day, O’Keefe and Roy are working with students, meeting with teachers, speaking with parents over the phone and coordinating with off-campus specialists.

The job title is apt—both O’Keefe and Roy coordinate support so that every student can

be successful in a school that is known for its rigorous curriculum.

O’Keefe joined St. Timothy’s in the fall of 2019 after working in Jacksonville, Florida as the Director of Education and Curriculum at a small Episcopal school. During her time there, O’Keefe worked towards an endorsement in gifted education. When she moved to the Raleigh area and found St. Timothy’s, she knew it would be a great fit.

At St. Timothy’s, we work to identify and honor those gifts while still keeping to a rigorous and structured curriculum. While working on sets, Blair and JT witnessed the amount of waste that the commercial film industry produces. They created Boot Scraps in early 2020 to decrease waste during production— including single-use utensils, food waste and high energy comsumption—while also telling stories of how local partners implement sustainable practices.

Based in Wilmington, Boot Scraps specializes in social media shorts, culture documentaries and music videos.

2011 Lt. Nico Hillmann (5), a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, completed a rigorous Air Force pilot training course at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas.

The Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training leads students through three phases over 52 weeks: flying training, ground training and officer development training.

While taking the course, Nico received the Order of Daedalians AETC Commander’s Trophy, which goes to the graduate with the best overall flying, academics and officership. He also received the Flying Training Award, which is awarded to the graduate with the best flying scores in the class.

The goal is to develop a non-destructive testing method that is able to determine a structure’s breaking point in these conditions. Chip said, “the main trade-off with any sort of spacecraft material is strength and weight. You can always use a strong material, but this almost always means a lot more added weight. Since we are trying to limit excess weight in these vehicles, a method to better determine the strength capabilities of a material in these conditions is needed.”

2019 Hayden Stanley (9) completed his expansive Eagle Scout project after more than a year and a half of work.

With help from other Scouts in Troop 334 and their parents, Hayden gave new life to various areas of St. Timothy’s Church. The restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic made it more difficult to finish the projects, but Hayden found a way to make it work.

He painted the hallway from the Church to the parish hall, transformed the nursery space to an area for youth and children’s ministry and installed new lighting and ceiling tiles in the parlor.

Hayden said, “I enjoyed knowing that my project would benefit people that need it done, and that those people were part of a community I was familiar with.”

Staff Alumni Spotlight Abby and Amy Rinehard ’17 enjoyed their time at St. Timothy’s so much that they didn’t want to leave when they graduated.

Abby and Amy started working at After School Care and STS summer camps during their eighth grade year. At Cardinal Gibbons High School, they both juggled jobs, academics and extracurricular activities like hosting the annual Middle School Leadership Conference, working as co-managing editors of the yearbook staff their junior and senior years and being Junior Class Marshals, chosen for ranking among the 15 students

with the highest GPA of their class.

Abby said, “One of my absolute favorite parts of St. Timothy’s has always been the way that the faculty and staff care for every single student in any way necessary. At St. Timothy’s, I felt (and feel) loved, cared for, supported, and heard. With so many wonderful memories of these feelings as a student, I wanted to find a way to help continue spreading this message to St. Timothy’s students and really give back to an incredible community that has given—and continues to give—me so much!”

Amy said, “To me, it’s not work—I love being, playing and learning with our students. I love that whenever I see someone I know from St. Timothy’s, whether that be fellow alumni or a current teacher, we take a second to catch up. The care of our community extends beyond school grounds, but into the lives of every St. Timothy’s family.”

In the fall, Abby and Amy will join the honors program at North Carolina State University. Abby plans to major in Elementary Education and Amy will study Middle Grades English Language Arts and Social Studies.
