Headmaster’s Letter I’ve been thinking a lot about milestones. It may be because this year marks my tenth year as Head of School at St. Timothy’s, or because my oldest son, Will, graduates this year after a journey that seems like it began only yesterday—with him toting his oversized red schoolbag as he walked into Marcia Hall for the first time.

Do you ever wonder where the concept of milestones comes from?

The Online Etymology Dictionary says it dates back to the stone markers along ancient Roman roads—also where our concept of “miles” first originated, from mille passus, Latin for 1,000 paces.

Milestones and journeys go hand in hand. Whether it’s a child’s graduation, a significant anniversary or 1,000 paces on an ancient Roman highway, there are certain points where we ought to stop for a moment to reflect on all that has come before and to consider what may lie ahead.

While we haven’t left COVID-19 behind us as quickly as we hoped and our community continues to navigate the many challenges associated with it, 2021 has nevertheless been a very good year for our school, with many milestones worth celebrating with gratitude.

As I found myself going further down the internet rabbit hole researching milestone trivia, I noticed that www.vocabulary.com notes, “Often a milestone marks the start of a new chapter.”

That idea resonates with me as I flip through the pages of this edition of the St. Timothy’s magazine—the story about our new middle school classes that came about after COVIDrelated protocols helped us reconsider scheduling possibilities. Or as we read about Milestones and our wonderful new colleagues this year. Or as we honor the journeys go hand graduating class of 2021...or in hand...there are read about the Class of 2017 certain points where beginning the next steps of we ought to stop for their journeys in college this fall...or celebrate the college a moment to reflect graduations, weddings and on all that has come even a new baby for our alumni before and to consider featured in our Class Notes.

Exciting new chapters abound!

This year has held many what may important milestones for St. Timothy’s School.

With the official opening of our new outdoor spaces, our campus has been transformed and grown by nearly a third to reach its full size for the first time in school history. Also, the school has reached maximum enrollment, with 580 students. This no doubt contributed to record RSVPs for the Back-to-School BBQ, held this fall by Friends of St. Timothy’s—a milestone for any STS community event ever. For the first time, we’ve been voted the “Best Private School in Raleigh” in the

lie ahead.

Whether you are an alum, a current or former parent, a current or former teacher, a grandparent or a friend of St. Timothy’s, I wish for you to have your own exciting new chapters in the time ahead.

Regardless of any particular individual milestone we might be approaching, each of our journeys has in some important way intersected with St. Timothy’s School… and if you’re anything like me, you’re all the better for it.

It’s a great day to be a Titan!

The Headmaster’s Cup is chosen by the Headmaster from a selection of students nominated by faculty.

This award is given to the eighth grader who “best exhibits the outstanding qualities of a St. Timothy’s student.” Leo received a trophy with his name inscribed on it.

The faculty choose the winner of the Faculty Cup each year. The award is given to a well-rounded eighth grader who embodies the Portrait of a Graduate statement.

Margaret received a trophy with her name inscribed on it.

Sponsored by the North Hills Chick-fil-A, operated by Rally de Leon ’78, this honor is given to the student-athlete who best displays humility, a positive attitude, good work ethic, good sportsmanship and great character. Clara’s name is inscribed on a plaque in the St. Timothy’s School trophy case – and she will receive a year of free Chick-fil-A sandwiches!

St. Timothy’s Wins Raleigh’s Best Award St. Timothy’s School has been voted the best school for private education in the 2021 Best of Raleigh competition, sponsored by the News & Observer.

Our school was one of five nominated for the award.

The St. Timothy’s community was invited to vote once per day from August 23 through September 5. We showed

our Titan spirit and won the sought-after award.

Since about 50,000 voters participated in the 2021 Best of Raleigh competition, this award is quite an honor for our school!

Welcome, New Faculty and Staff!

B

oth new and familiar faces joined the St. Timothy’s family this year as faculty and staff members. We are excited to start the year off with such stellar talent.

Peggy Todd returns to St. Timothy’s School, her teaching home of 12 years, as a middle school history teacher. She previously taught social studies and Writer’s Workshop classes at St. Timothy’s.

Shelley Bland and Kyla Brazel joined the STS Our newest faculty and staff members include: family last year. Bland was a second grade teaching Beth Barnard, Lower School Counselor assistant last year. She continues to work in lower Mohammad Eid, Network Administrator school this year as a fourth grade teacher. Formerly, Brazel supported our students, parents and faculty Sean Fowler, Middle School Social Studies as the lower school distance learning instructor.

Marian Godwin, Director of Individual Giving She is now a second grade teaching assistant and Phoebe Guice, Middle School Art provides lower school academic support.

Beth Holland, Lower School Support Team Gillian Boardman returns to St. Timothy’s as part Monty O’Brien, Lower School Support Team of the lower school learning support team. She previously worked as a third grade teacher.

Hiroko Reams, First Grade Teaching Assistant Kayla Roberts worked as a middle school auxiliary instructor and long-term substitute for lower school P.E. last year. Roberts is now taking on two positions, Assistant Athletic Director and middle school P.E. Teacher.

T

he arts program at St. Timothy’s gives students an opportunity to discover their creativity. Whether taking drama, visual arts or music, students learn to communicate in a whole new way.

actors on the stage to determine audience sight lines and stage movement. The process helps to direct the audience’s gaze and allows viewers to connect emotionally with the performance.

Lower school art teacher Laura Bierer is teaching her students about the importance of shapes and colors. Pre-kindergarteners recently completed the Big Fish project. Students used oil pastels to create lines on a fish drawing, then painted and cut the shape out. The image was glued onto a paper to create the finished artwork.

Drama students are practicing the art of conveying emotion in their classes. With the Christmas season quickly approaching, drama teacher Amy Murphy-Archer is working on holiday performances with her middle school students. Instead of drawing stick people, first graders learned how to use shapes to create people. They drew family portraits of parents, siblings and pets. Second graders used basic shapes to create portraits of endangered animals and third graders drew their home with simple shapes.

Fourth graders drew on their knowledge of shapes and colors to create designs inspired by Molas, an art form invented by the Kuna Indians using fabric and thread. First, the students drew a tropical animal realistically with shapes, then added design elements with color to make the image more abstract.

Middle school art teacher Phoebe Guice is expanding on the basic principles of art with her projects. Fifth graders used colors, shapes, values and lines to create their favorite foods. They also put a van Gogh-inspired twist on the fall season by creating multi-media pumpkins under a starry night. Sixth graders discovered the art of illustrating and writing comic strips.

After studying the “Mother of American modernism” Georgia O’Keeffe, seventh graders created their own skull and flower drawings.

Students also learned how to draw realistic hands while working on a sign language hand art project.

Throughout the first trimester, eighth graders drew album covers and created comic books.

Guice also introduced eighth graders to zentangles, which are structured patterns made up of dots, lines, curves and circles. Students developed their own zentangles featuring an animal.

In music classes, students in pre-kindergarten through first grade are working on self-control and movement. Jordan Shaw, who teaches pre-kindergarteners and kindergarteners, and Joe Farmer, who teaches first through fourth graders, show students how to dance to the beat by teaching dance routines and following directions in songs like “The Goldfish Song” by the Laurie Berkner Band. They also use desk bells to improve self control, as students have to wait

to play when they see the proper note.

Second graders are learning about meter by identifying strong and weak beats. Students use their names to create rhythm patterns and have started practicing the songs and dances for the Pumpkin Parade.

Third graders are performing rhythm patterns on percussion instruments, melodic patterns on xylophones and using their names to create rhythm patterns that are incorporated into chants and songs. They are also learning to perform 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 note rhythm patterns accurately and exploring vocal and instrumental timbres.

Introduced last year, the Rainbow Ukulele curriculum is still a big hit in fourth grade.

Students can collect colored beads as they demonstrate various knowledge and skills on the ukulele. They learn to play a basic set of chords which allows students to begin playing songs quickly. Fourth graders also learn how to read tablature, a special kind of music notation.

With thriving music, fine arts and drama programs, students are able to unleash their creativity and think outside the box. We are grateful to have such incredible arts programs at St. Timothy’s!

THE CLASS OF 2017 begins the next journey

It seems like we were celebrating the Class of 2017 graduating from St. Timothy’s only yesterday, and yet four years have passed. The sixty-five members of the Class of 2017 have finished their high school careers and are taking the next steps of their journeys. Read on to discover what our Titan alumni are up to!

Trevor Allison is in the Honors College at the University of South Carolina, where he plans to major in computer science. A Cardinal Gibbons High School alumnus, Trevor lettered in cross country and swimming, ran track all four years and was a Commended Student in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Trace Alphin graduated early from Crossroads FLEX High School, with magna cum laude honors, and enrolled at Wake Forest University last January. During high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society. Trace received a soccer scholarship to WFU and is studying Health and Exercise Science.

He hopes to become a physical therapist or attend medical school.

Amelia Aragona is a Belk Scholar at Davidson College, where she plans to major in studio art and be on the pre-med track. A Cardinal Gibbons High School alumna, she ran cross country, and was a member of mock trial, theater, debate and Gibbons Leadership Community.

Amelia received both the Bishop Burbidge Award, which is awarded to a student from each graduating class who embodies faith, service and leadership; and the Bishop Gossman Award, for excellence in English.

Amelia also founded the Cardinal Gibbons Humanities Project, a student-led initiative documenting the history of racial integration at Cardinal Gibbons through alumni interviews and research.

Paige Bastek is a member of the Honors College at the University of Delaware, and plans to major in chemical engineering. She graduated from Ravenscroft High School and was a National Honor Society member and Key Club officer.

Addison Bell graduated from Raleigh Charter High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, a student leader in the Choral program, a peer mentor and an advocate for mental health awareness.

Addison also sang in the Cantabile ensemble of the Capital City Girls Choir and performed throughout the country. Addison is attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ashley Brady, a Millbrook High School alumna, was a member of the National Honor Society and DECA. She also played on the school’s lacrosse team and volunteered for Raleigh’s chapter of the National Charity League.

Liam Bonfield attends Butler University, where he studies psychology and philosophy.

He received the Bulldog Achievement Award, a partial scholarship from Butler, and the McCabe Scholarship from Society of Cincinnati-Virginia chapter.

While at Ravenscroft School, Liam played JV basketball his freshman year and ran track during his freshman and sophomore years. He was an after-school counselor at the YMCA his junior year and was voted Homecoming King of Ravenscroft.

Hannah Brown is attending Wake Forest University and plans to major in business. At Cardinal Gibbons High School, she was a member of the student council for three years, a student council Executive Officer her senior year and a leader on retreats for middle school and high school. Hannah ranked in the top 4% of her graduating class, was a member of the Gibbons Leadership Conference/Community and spoke during the Baccalaureate Mass.

She was awarded a photography scholarship and plans to study photography.

Edward Helton, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumnus, is in the College of Sciences at East Carolina University. He plans to major in economics and is interested in pursuing a career in finance and politics.

Sarah Ann Hensley graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School. She was a National Honor Society member, the captain of the JV tennis team her sophomore year and a varsity tennis player her junior year. She volunteered with the National Charity League. Sarah Ann attends North Carolina State University.

Maddie Lemmon, a Broughton High School alumna, attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She plans to major in biology. In high school, Maddie was a member of the varsity basketball team, the track team and the service club.

Caroline Moore is studying in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University.

She graduated with honors from Cardinal Gibbons High School, and was a member of the drama department all four years. Outside of school, Caroline auditioned for and participated in musicals and community theatre productions.

Libby Horton is majoring in Computer Science at Boston College.

She graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where she was a Student Council Executive Officer and the Vice President of Serving Our Soldiers Club. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and played on the basketball team.

Wesley Major graduated magna cum laude from Athens Drive High School. He played in the marching band, the Triangle Youth Philharmonic and the Triangle Youth Brass Band. Wesley was selected as an all-state tuba player. He attends Wake Forest University.

Emory Pegram graduated with honors from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Medical and Biology Club. She was on the soccer team, swim team and cross country team. Emory is attending Auburn University and plans to major in biochemistry with a focus in pre-pharmacy. She hopes to attend the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn. Emory rushed before starting classes and is now a proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Aaron Kaczor graduated from Bedford High School. He was a founding member of the Operation Smile Club and played the trumpet in the marching band for two years. He also played midfielder on the varsity soccer team, which placed second in the state his senior year. Aaron is attending Pace University and plans to major in economics and public policy. He is excited about participating in the College Federal Reserve Challenge.

Amelia Kass, a Durham Academy alumna, is taking a gap year to study Mandarin in Taiwan. She plans to attend American University to major in Global Studies.

Ella McDonald is attending Belmont Abbey College, where she plays soccer and is on a pre-physician assistant track. At Sanderson High School, Ella was the Vice President and President of the DECA Club.

Mary Lawson Melichar is attending Appalachian State University with plans to major in Environmental Science and Sustainability and minor in Hospitality and Tourism. She graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School with honors.

Morgan Plentl plans to major in business at North Carolina State University. At Cardinal Gibbons High School, she was in the National Honor Society, the Franciscan Youth International Club and the Green Team, an environmental science club.

Morgan was an after-school care counselor at St. Timothy’s and worked at Drybar.

Julia Priu is attending Duke University. At Cardinal Gibbons High School, she won several state championships for track and cross country. In her free time, Julia plays the cello.

Colby Stone, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumnus, was in the National Honor Society, the Lancer Club and the Music Ministry.

William Tepper graduated magna cum laude from Millbrook High School. He was a varsity letter cross country runner all four years, a member of the National Honor Society and a North Carolina Academic Scholar. William received the President’s Award for Academic Excellence and graduated with honors from the Millbrook Digital Media Career Academy.

He also received the Tom Dimmock Music and Ministry Scholarship for his mission work and participation in the Trinity Baptist Church music program. William is a Presidential Scholar at High Point University.

Caroline Turley, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumna, is attending North Carolina State University.

She plans to major in engineering, with the intention of doing either biomedical or chemical engineering and working in medicine.

A HANDS-ON APPROACH TO LEARNING

D

isrupting the norm can lead to innovative ideas—and it has at St. Timothy’s. Middle school students are reaping the benefits from a change in schedule. While it sounds simple, the transition from a semester-based, five-day schedule to a trimester-based, seven-day rotation allows for greater flexibility with classes.

The two additional days make it easier to spread out core classes, like math and science courses, and add engaging enrichment classes.

All sixth through eighth graders are now taking an additional enrichment course each trimester, and they will participate in three separate

enrichment classes by the end of the year.

Sixth graders take Community Connections, CREATE and STEM; seventh graders attend Life Skills, Debate and Make; and eighth graders have Genius Hour, Road Across the USA and Robotics. While some of these classes have existed in years past, students typically chose just one elective each year. Now, sixth through eighth graders attend one enrichment class per trimester.

Science teacher Chrissy Saunders took a page from Google’s book and created a Genius Hour for eighth graders.

Google encourages its employees to spend 20 percent of their time working on passion projects. Giving employees time to explore their creative ideas led to an increase in productivity.

Many aspects of Google, including Gmail and Google News, were developed when engineers created their 20-time projects. Saunders worked with Brandon Bogumil, Imagination Lab teacher, to develop a problem-based learning curriculum geared toward eighth grade students.

To begin, Saunders asked students to create brackets of their passions. They each started with four ideas, narrowed it down to two, then chose the subject they would focus on for the trimester.

They watched episodes of Shark Tank to learn about elevator pitches and then had to pitch their winning idea to Saunders.

Students came up with a myriad of projects, including building a computer from scratch, developing ways to deal with stress, learning calligraphy and building a rabbit hutch. Twice a rotation, students meet to research, write about their progress and reflect on what worked and what did not.

Todd started by grouping students together and assigning them different regions of the United States. She also gave students a large, medium or small budget and a timeline.

Throughout the trimester, the students have to figure out a way to visit the cultural attractions in each state in the region within their budget and timeline.

When an idea fails, Saunders encourages her students to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. She maintains that it is okay to fail and make mistakes because that is how you learn and improve.

Eighth graders start by researching historic locations, nature preserves and fun activities unique to their assigned states. They choose three options for each category, then determine the three most interesting places to visit in each state.

Based on their budget, students have to figure out how to get to those places—whether by flying, renting an RV, driving a car or using public transportation. n 2020, the golf industry saw a surge in popularity as people searched for outdoor, socially-distant activities. The trend extended to the St. Timothy’s community as the annual spring fundraiser was re-imagined into the Titan Golf Classic.

More than 170 golfers participated in the tournament on Monday, May 24, 2021. Teams of parents, grandparents, friends of the school, alumni and teachers were excited to play on the courses at North Ridge Country Club. Many came early to practice their swings, enjoy the boxed lunch and check out the raffles.

Although rain threatened at times, it held off until the very end of the tournament. After finishing the 18 holes, golfers were invited to take part in the Scoreboard Party. Many participated in the raffle, with prizes including rounds of golf at local golf courses, a pair of David Yurman earrings and various items from the Titan Spirit Store.

Before the Titan Golf Classic began, players could purchase extra raffle tickets, one additional mulligan and the chance to play Challenge Course games. These friendly contests were placed throughout the two courses and included games such as a putting contest, the longest drive, the

Pffiefer was impressed with their answers, saying, “I was so surprised when some of the kids used the language that I use throughout the day, like ‘exercise patience.’”

Sydney Shack added, “you should treat people kindly and you should always be helpful in any way you can. Interrupting people is not respectful.”

This award is given to students nominated as outstanding students by their professors. Leila was on the Chancellor’s List for achieving a GPA of 3.8 or above for six semesters.

Faculty Alumni Spotlight Jordan Shaw ’99, who attended St. Timothy’s School then graduated from Hale High School, has come back to St. Timothy’s as the prekindergarten and kindergarten music teacher.

Her family has a long history with St. Timothy’s—her mom, Mrs. Brown, was a much-loved kindergarten teacher for over 20 years! Now a third generation is attending St. Timothy’s: Mrs. Shaw’s eldest daughter is a kindergartener at STS. Mrs. Shaw has countless fond memories of going to school here. She loved the traditions, like the Biggles and Littles program, the Christmas pageant and Blue and White Day. Mrs. Shaw also remembers enjoying After School Care and doing artwork with Ms. Bierer.

Mrs. Shaw said, “There’s definitely a comfort that comes along with having attended St. Timothy’s and now working here. I remember the impact the teachers had on my life and I hope I can make the same impact on my students. This school is one of a kind, from the campus to the community, the education and the spiritual development. I’m honored to work here.”
