Every year as the summer season starts to fade, there is excitement in the air for the upcoming school year. There was even more anticipation this fall, as many of our St. Timothy’s students had not seen each other in person since that fateful day in March when we transitioned to distance learning. We are happy to welcome returning students back to campus and delighted to get to know the newest members of our Titan family.

This issue of the magazine focuses on transitions—the Class of 2020 has graduated from our halls, the Class of 2016 has moved on to college and the St. Timothy’s community has adapted to the new way of life during the pandemic.

School looks different, but many aspects remain the same.

Teachers are still teaching, students are still expanding their horizons and all are still making lifelong relationships at St. Timothy’s.

When St. Timothy’s School transitioned to distance learning last spring, many items hanging on our bulletin boards and walls remained unchanged for the rest of the year— including a sign just outside my office reminding us of our March Character Trait of the Month: perseverance. I don’t know that I ever reflected on that sign as much as I did this past spring…and it wasn’t just because it was there for four months.

and taught in each classroom for younger students and via Zoom for older students. Fourth graders are learning in the gymnasium, while gym classes are outdoors. With Jamboards, middle schoolers learn simultaneously with peers in both the classroom down the hall and those connecting from home.

Ukulele lessons are taught in the music tent in our courtyard while students eat picnic lunches nearby.

Religious Studies Returns to STS Wherever you stand on the “America is a melting pot or salad bowl” controversy, you can agree that it is made up of many different cultures. In a typical year, there are countless festivals in Raleigh, like the Greek Festival, CaribMask Carnival and La Fiesta Del Pueblo, to celebrate various cultures.

And what exactly is “culture?” Any history teacher will tell you that culture is made up of the traditions, beliefs, arts and social institutions of a particular group of people. Students at St. Timothy’s always study the many aspects that make up a culture, but this year, fifth and sixth graders are looking through a different lens: religion.

During the first trimester, students learn necessary vocabulary—for example, one can be religious, atheist, agnostic or polytheist—and the history of the Christian religion and its traditions.

Reverend Brittany Edwards, assistant chaplain, teaches every fifth- and sixth-grade student during Religious Studies, which is held once during the six-day rotation. They are learning about more than the Christian faith; the curriculum touches on religions practiced around the world.

Edwards says, “for many fifth and sixth graders—and indeed, for some adults—the Christian tradition they know is the only ‘real’ way to be a Christian. Exposing students to a wide variety of traditions is crucial to a

Student Honors and Awards Congratulations to Margaret Raynal, the recipient of the 2020 Headmaster’s Cup, Maggie Scheer, the recipient of the 2020 Faculty Cup, and Derek Fusco, the recipient of the 2020 Chick-Fil-A Second Mile ServantLeadership Award.

The Headmaster’s Cup is given to the eighth grader who “best exhibits the outstanding qualities of a St. Timothy’s student.” The runner-up to the Headmaster’s Cup is awarded the Faculty Cup.

The 2020 Chick-fil-A Second Mile ServantLeadership Award is given to the student-athlete who displays humility, a positive attitude, good work ethic, good sportsmanship and great character.

thletic programs at St. Timothy’s started later than usual this year, but participating students are excited to be a part of a team again.

Over the summer and into the beginning of the school year, logistics about athletics at STS were still being worked out. Athletic Director Mike McConoughey spent hours talking to the athletic heads of other schools, researching the best ways to play socially distant sports and contacting various locations about practice spaces.

In late August, parents of middle schoolers were invited to fill out an interest form for various athletic teams. By mid-October, athletic programs were up and running.

There are still classic fall options such as Girls’ Tennis and Co-ed Cross Country. We have also added Girls’ Beach Volleyball, Strength Training Club and Kickball!

Titan Athletics is keeping grade levels separate in their athletic activities, just as St. Timothy’s does during the school day this year. Transportation is not provided; parents are encouraged to drive theier own students or find a ride within their child’s class.

Although the teams were formed later in the year, students can still have a full fall sports experience— since we are not competing with other schools, we are not limited by a fall sports calendar.

A Graduation to Remember

A

lthough graduation occurred almost two months after the graduates of 2020 had their last class, the ceremony was just as memorable as in years past—and perhaps even more so.

Many students and families had not seen each other in-person since March, when St. Timothy’s transitioned to distance learning. Usually graduation occurs in June on the first Saturday after the last exam, but this year the ceremony was postponed to August. Families were seated farther apart than in years past and graduates didn’t process. Despite the differences, important things remained the same: Head of School Tim Tinnesz opened the ceremony; Father Allen Waller and Board of Trustees Chair Joe Diab gave the graduates Bibles and diplomas; and, thanks to music teacher Joe Farmer and his video creation skills, the middle school choir made a virtual appearance.

years she attended St. Timothy’s: “by the time I was sitting where you are now, St. Timothy’s felt more like home than it did school. To me, graduation was a reminder I was having to leave the community I was so used to being a part of. But in that moment I didn’t realize how much this community would follow and support me after I crossed the stage.”

She also gave the graduates advice: “St. Timothy’s has gone beyond simply providing you with an education—they have laid the roots for who you will become. You may not know it now, but I promise one day, you will. So when you leave here today, don’t forget this place. Don’t forget the lessons you learned, the friends you made, the teachers you had and, lastly, remember to never settle for anything....”

T H E C L A S S O F 2 0 16 H E A D S T O C O L L E G E The four years since the Class of 2016 graduated from St. Timothy’s seem to have flown by! Now, this class is starting a new chapter: college. Although many are attending classes virtually, these STS alumni are still taking a big step and discovering their passions. Read on to see what the members of the Class of 2016 are up to.

Christopher Adams graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he was on the swim team and served as the secretary for National Spanish Honors Society. Outside of school, he volunteered regularly at Beginning and Beyond Daycare Center. Christopher studies political science, English and comparative literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Max Barbour graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he was on the A/B Honor Roll. Max spent his high school years playing both school and recreational basketball and baseball. He is currently attending North Carolina State University and plans to major in business.

Hanna Barrett is attending North Carolina State Sterling Adams, University and a North Raleigh plans to major in Christian Academy biology and minor alumna, is in environmental attending the science and zoology. Logan also interned with a veterinarian during high school and plans to pursue a career working with animals.

Adger Lewis graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where she participated in student council and the dance program for all four years.

She now attends Elon University and intends to major in sports management.

Trey Lewis graduated with honors from Cardinal Gibbons High School. Outside the classroom, he played on the men’s varsity soccer team. Trey is attending the University of South Carolina and majoring in business.

Emma Lias studies theater and literature at the University of California, San Diego. While at Saint Mary’s School, she wrote two full-length literary works. Emma hopes to continue molding this passion into a career as a playwright.

Anne Mangum graduated with honors from Raleigh Charter High School. She will attend North Carolina State University in the spring to study

industrial animal science with a minor in Agribusiness.

Anne competed on MacNair’s Country Acre Interscholastic Equestrian Team for three years and was co-president last year with another STS alumna, Rachel Smith.

This winter, she qualified for the Southern Regionals where she was also awarded a scholarship. Anne has been an active member of the Wake County Horse Council, and served this past year as Vice President. She has volunteered at MacNair’s since the start of the pandemic, doing well checks, exercising horses, assisting trainers and helping with NC State’s equestrian team which she will join in the spring. Anne hopes to spend next summer traveling throughout Europe, particularly Prague and London.

Madison Mitchell, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumna, is attending North Carolina State University to study biomedical engineering. She is grateful for her years at St. Timothy’s where she was inspired academically and formed lifelong friendships.

Aiden Moody was accepted at the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University, where he plans to study finance. He played basketball all four years at Sanderson High School.

His senior year, Aiden was voted captain of the basketball team, received the Raleigh Sports Club Athlete of the Week award and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Maddox Morgan is attending North Carolina State University and will start

in January as a Spring Connect student. While at Cardinal Gibbons High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society and the leader of the Fishing Club. Maddox was on the A/B Honor Roll every year. He continued playing tennis throughout high school and has worked for the past two years as an assistant coach and a tennis camp leader at RDU Tennis.

Monica Powell, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumna, made the A/B Honor Roll every semester during her high school career. Monica is attending Florida State University, with plans to continue her passion for music in college. She is double majoring in commercial music and entrepreneurship and hopes to work in the music industry in Nashville.

Shane Morse is attending East Carolina University and is majoring in computer science.

He graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he was on the drum line.

Auburn Robertson is attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is majoring in business and minoring in sustainability and Spanish. At Cardinal Gibbons High School, she was voted Homecoming Queen, was the President of I Cube Business Club and was the captain of the girls’ varsity tennis team.

Auburn graduated in the top ten percent of her class at Cardinal Gibbons.

Turon Murray graduated from St. David’s School, where he played football all four years and was the captain his senior year. He is studying chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Zach Naylor, a Cardinal Gibbons High School alumnus, is a first-year mechanical engineering student at Purdue University.

Andy Plyler graduated from St. David’s School, where he was the MVP and All-Conference athlete in baseball during his junior year. Andy is now in the Honors College at Clemson University, majoring in prebusiness and construction science.

Mollie Ruinsky graduated magna cum laude from Broughton High School. She was in the Chinese Language Honor Society, helped run the campus food pantry and worked at Hayes Barton Pharmacy. Mollie is attending North Carolina State University and is majoring in food science. She is in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Honors program and received the David J. She was co-captain of the International Equestrian Association team all four years of high school and recently joined the North Carolina State Intercollegiate Horse Show Association team.

Hayden Stephens is studying marine biology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She graduated from Leesville Road High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the National Latin Honor Society, and the National Journalism Honor Society. Hayden was the Student Council Historian her sophomore year and Vice President her junior year. She played volleyball both freshman and sophomore years then coached the JV volleyball team at St. Timothy’s during her senior year.

Hayden also interned at North Carolina Sea Grant her senior year.

Cole Thompson graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School, where he played baseball all four years and received the Defensive Player of the Year award as a sophomore. He is attending William Peace University to play baseball and study environmental science.

Cole Whitford is attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and plans to major in business administration. At St. David’s School, he played on the varsity golf team, earned Eagle Scout status, was a member of the National Honor Society and was an Admissions Prefect.

Lindsay Woodard is applying for admission to the United States Coast Guard Academy. In high school, she was on the Cardinal Gibbons High School cross country and track teams and was a member of the history club and the National Honor Society. She also participated in competitive gymnastics during all four years of high school.

t is a blessing to see the St. Timothy’s campus as a hive of activity once again.

Walking down the hall, you can’t help but smile as you see the commotion going on behind the scenes. Students stay in their classrooms during class changes; however, there is still plenty of activity going on throughout the day. Teachers plan for their next lessons at mobile lecterns parked in the hallways, administrative staff members go all across campus to proctor simulcast classes and, although everyone is wearing a mask, you can still sense their smiles.

There’s no doubt that this year is overwhelming.

But there are also pockets of joy that are the silver lining to this pandemic. After transitioning to distance learning last March, many of the faculty, staff, parents and students wondered whether St. Timothy’s would return to in-person classes for the 2020-2021 school year.

f you Google “mental heath and the church,” you’ll discover more than 200 million hits. However, if you search for churches that have a mental health program, you’ll get far fewer results.

A reason for the lack of mental health awareness and acceptance in the church could be the complicated history between the two. In ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures, people with mental illness were seen as being possessed by the devil. The stigma continued for hundreds of years; mental health advocates in the late 1800s began to speak up about the deplorable conditions of mental health hospitals.

2008 Caid Kirven (4a, 4b) graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016 with a degree in kinesiology.

While there, he was a walk-on for the Cavaliers, the school’s Division 1 basketball team.

Caid currently is in his third year at Ohio State University in the College of Medicine and is interested in orthopedic surgery.

He is recently engaged to a fellow UVA graduate, Rachel Marsh, who is in her first year of dermatology residency at OSU. This year, Caid will participate in his second

Caid says, “My favorite memory from St. Timothy’s is when we used to have Saturday morning basketball practices. After practice ended, we would hang out on campus before walking with the team to North Hills for breakfast at Chick-Fil-A.”

2009 Shelby Bassett works at the University of Melbourne in the Connected Cities Lab as a research assistant in urban policy.

Currently, she is researching the connection between philanthropy and urban policy outcomes and how to better plan cities to address night time inequalities.

Shelby is also completing a master’s of public policy at Australian National University.

2011 Ellery Newell (5) graduated from Guilford Technical Community College in May and moved back to the area.

She recently accepted a job at Triangle Family Dentistry in Apex after completing the fifth and final clinical board exam for a dental hygiene license.

Ellery says, “I am so excited for what the future holds! I can’t wait to help people feel more confident in their smiles.” In her free time, Ellery enjoys doing portrait photography.

Sarah Messick (6) graduated magna cum laude from the College of Nursing at East Carolina University on May 8, 2020. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and held many leadership positions. Sarah now works as a nurse in the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit at WakeMed Health & Hospitals in Raleigh.

Sharon Carlson (9) is the proud new grandmother of Holland Quinn Carrier, born weighing six pounds, seven ounces on September 25, 2020 to parents Emilee and Lance Carrier.

2013 John Kirven (7) will graduate from the University of Virginia in the spring of 2021 with a major in economics and a minor in astronomy. He has been working as a data analyst for the UVA football team and, this past summer, for an agronomy company. John intends to pursue a career in strategy consulting.

During college, he started playing guitar and now is part of a band.

2014 Ashley Badin (8) has accepted a summer internship at Bank of America in New York City within their investment banking division.

These recruiting processes are very selective, some with more than 15,000 applicants for 200 spots.

In Memoriam Judy Todd (10), who worked as our office administrator for 25 years before retiring in 2016, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

While at St. Timothy’s, she did any job that was ever needed, and always did so with dedication, meticulousness and with a special wit and humor that would bring a smile to us all, regardless of circumstance or challenge.

Judy was an ordained member of Wendell Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Samaritan’s class and served on numerous committees.

We will forever remember our colleague and dear friend for her kindness and unwavering faith.

Faculty Alumni Spotlight Erin Spalinski (’96), the Registrar and Photography teacher, felt at home at St. Timothy’s School from the second she saw it.

She visited STS on MLK Day, which was not yet a school holiday, and loved it immediately. She started the following week and attended school at our current campus through fifth grade then went to St. Timothy’s-Hale on Lassiter Mill Road for high school.

She says, “I always loved Blue-White Days. Some of the races and games we play today are still the same, like Koosh in the Can and Sit on the Balloon to Pop. And at the time, we celebrated by everyone getting a Pepsi afterward, with the winning team getting theirs first!”

Mrs. Spalinski enjoys working where she went to school: “I’ve worked at several different independent and public schools and have loved them all, but working with some people I’ve known since I was in school and getting to participate in many of the same traditions I did as a child is really special.”

During her time here, Mrs. Spalinski has had many roles. She was a third grade teacher for five years, then moved into her current role as the registrar. This year in addition to her registrar duties, she’s back in the classroom as a sixth-grade advisor and teacher for the fifth-grade photography class.

St. Timothy’s School and St. Timothee’s School in Boucan-Carré, Haiti have been partners since 2016. Over the past four years, faculty from both schools have visited each others’ campuses to share lessons, learn about each others’ way of life and connect with the students. Letter from the Rector In considering what to share in this fall edition of the St. Timothy’s magazine, I was greatly encouraged to read about Marshall Taylor’s process of discernment to the Episcopal priesthood. Regardless of the denomination, becoming a church leader is a big deal and sobering responsibility. Indeed, there is much honor that comes with dawning the black suit and white collar; however, the challenge is not letting such worldly honor be what drives you. Instead it is serving Christ that we seek, using what little we bring to the role for his service.

But, this should not be an excuse to not do all we can to serve Christ. That is because what we are in need of most of all is a willing heart for God to use us for his sake and his glory.

Don’t believe me? Try it and you’ll see. Often the saints of old were not the greatest thinkers, executives, politicians. Rather they were people marked with a heartfelt desire to please God above all else. And it will be the same for you if you ask God to use you in a powerful way.
