Note from the Board Chair

As the new Board Chair of Palm Beach Dramaworks, it is an honor and a privilege to welcome you to Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men

PBD has been a second home to me since my wife and I moved to West Palm Beach following my retirement from a long and fulfilling career as an educator. Arts and education are my twin passions. My teaching career is what shaped me as an adult. It gave me insight. I learned as much from my students as they learned from me, and one of their greatest gifts was an appreciation for the arts. I learned that education is more than mathematics and history and science: to be a well-rounded individual, the arts are critical.

My appreciation was reinforced by my sister Lynne, who became a successful actress, and several of her esteemed colleagues. But that’s a story for another day.

As my career evolved and I took on leadership positions including superintendent of schools in one district and executive director in another, I made a commitment to only work in places that shared my values, meaning they offered a quality, integrated education that included the visual and performing arts. That was non-negotiable: there was no option for balancing the budget on the back of the arts.

With the arts so integral to my life, I was interested in learning about the culture in the area after moving here. A friend told me about Dramaworks, which was then a small theatre over on Banyan. Among the earliest plays I saw was Copenhagen, and I was enthralled: this was truly theatre to think about. You witness a play like that, and you’re changed by it. After seeing a few more productions, I knew I wanted to be part of this theatre. I started as a volunteer, because I knew how important PBD was to the community, and eventually I was asked to consider joining the board. It’s now been 10 wonderful years.

My goal as chair is that the theatre continues to thrive and grow, and we will do this by continuing to offer the exemplary productions we’re known for. Of course, the price of a ticket covers only half our costs, so donations are always welcome and needed. But it’s also important that those of us who love PBD become ambassadors of the theatre. Wherever I go, whether I’m in line at the post office or sitting next to someone on a plane, I talk about PBD and share what’s going on here. Hopefully those people talk to others, who talk to others. So, please help spread the word.

Note from the Managing Director

Thank you for joining us at this performance of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men, a classic work that has not only stood the test of time, but is as timely as ever. What makes this production particularly special for us is that everyone in the cast is a PBD veteran. This was by design: it’s a big ensemble play, and we thought it would be fun for our patrons to see so many actors onstage together who have played an integral part in our history and given all of us so much pleasure.

Twelve Angry Men will bring down the curtain on 2022, and as we look forward to the new year we have a lot to be grateful for at PBD. We were thrilled to be able to welcome you back last season after our delayed reopening. I’ll be honest: we had no idea whether we would get through the entire season because there was still so much uncertainty regarding how covid might evolve. Fortunately, once our first show was up and running it was smooth sailing for the rest of 2021-22. This season, another milestone: we’ve been able to relax our covid protocols – although, as we always remind people, we continue to monitor the situation in case we need to make any changes.

The fact that you are here, in our audience, means the world to us. But the truth is, our attendance numbers thus far are lower than they were pre-pandemic. Numerous long-time patrons have told us that although things are so much better now, they’re still not ready to take part in a group activity indoors.

This means that right now, we are relying on philanthropy more than usual. As this is the holiday season, we hope you’ll consider a gift to PBD. If you’re interested in increasing your annual donation, check out our Monthly Giving Circle on page 6 and our Sustainer Society on page 25. For more information, you can contact Development Manager Linda Berman at lberman@palmbeachdramaworks.org or 561-514-4042 x106. And please know how much we appreciate your support.

Wishing you very happy holidays and a very healthy year ahead.

The jury system, first established as a right in the Magna Carta, is one of the few ideas that is more important today in the 21st century than it was in the 13th century. When you are called, think not about how to avoid your service, but rather, the duty of every person to help achieve one of the most important goals of a civilized and democratic society: Equal justice for all under the law.

DID YOU KNOW

Reginald Rose was one of the seminal writers for the Golden Age of Television – the late 1940s through the early 1960s – when anthology series including Studio One, Kraft Theatre, and Playhouse 90 were presenting thoughtful, high-caliber teleplays, most of which were aired live, written by the likes of Paddy Chayefsky, Horton Foote, Arthur Hailey, Rod Serling, and Gore Vidal. Rose distinguished himself by tackling issues of social justice, a subject about which he was passionate.

Of all the writers mentioned above, Rose’s name is likely the least well-known. So here are some facts about him, about 12 Angry Men, and about the piece's impact. Unless otherwise noted, most of the information that follows is taken from an illuminating book by Phil Rosenzweig entitled Reginald Rose and the Journey of 12 Angry Men, published by Fordham University Press.

A native New Yorker, Rose was working as a copywriter at an ad agency when he began writing for television in 1951. After contributing five adaptations for the prestigious Studio One, he was offered the chance, in 1953, to write original plays for the series. He finally felt confident enough to quit his day job the following year, after his first two efforts, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners (about individual responsibility and collective guilt) and Thunder on Sycamore Street (prejudice), received both critical acclaim and public accolades.

Rose’s fourth original teleplay, 12 Angry Men, which was inspired by a summons for jury duty, opened Studio One’s 1954-55 season. The live 48-minute teleplay featured Robert Cummings as Juror 8, the role that Henry Fonda would go on to play in the movie. 12 Angry Men was called an “unusually powerful drama” in The New York Times, and earned Rose his first Emmy Award.

Over the next few years, Rose would tackle such subjects as juvenile delinquency, dysfunctional families, vigilantism, and torture. In a 1957 interview with The New York Times, Rose said, “Advertising agencies are always afraid of offending and try to avoid controversy. . . . I think that by shying away from controversy they are also making for less interest in their show. . . . I’ve had surprisingly good luck. There are battles . . . But you have to be prepared to get up and say that this is what has to be and that’s that. Then you might have to give in a little anyhow.”

Rose “gave a little” with Thunder on Sycamore Street, which was originally written as a story about racial prejudice and revolved around a Black family. He was told that a Black lead was unacceptable. He suggested a Jewish family or a Catholic family, and was again rebuffed. Ultimately, it became the story of an ex-convict and his family, and angry neighbors turning into a mob to try to force them out of town. The

response from the public suggested to Rose that viewers were well aware he wasn’t really writing about an ex-con. (Rose would continue to explore complex and controversial issues on TV in The Defenders, a highly acclaimed series about father and son lawyers that he created. It ran from 1961 to 1965 and won 14 Emmys.)

For the 90-minute, 1957 film of 12 Angry Men, Rose was able to flesh out the characters, restore sections that he’d cut from the much shorter teleplay, and add new material. He coproduced the movie with Fonda. The director was Sidney Lumet, a seasoned television director (he had previously worked with Rose three times) who, like Rose, was making his film debut. The movie launched Lumet’s Hollywood career.

Judith S. Kaye, the late chief judge of New York who was recognized for transforming the state’s court system, wrote an article titled “Why Every Chief Judge Should See 12 Angry Men,” in which she said, “I know no more powerful depiction of the genius of the American jury system than 12 Angry Men . . . . I have little doubt that even at its centennial, [it] will continue to excite audiences because . . . the quest for justice is timeless.”

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has said, “It was a very important film in terms of developing me both as a lawyer and subsequently as a judge.”

It’s not just the legal profession that holds the movie in high esteem. Rosenzweig points out that in the 1960s “many psychologists and management theorists came to see it as a rich source of material." The film also became – and remains – a staple at many business schools, as it is “studded with examples of group dynamics and interpersonal behavior.” That was something Rose understood. He wrote an article in The New York Times shortly before the film opened in 1957, and said, “Much of the intricate business of living is singled out and held up for scrutiny in this jury room, I feel. For instance, the alliances formed for purely intellectual reasons and those formed for emotional reasons alone remind us of larger and more important alliances that we can see at every turn in our newspapers, locally, nationally, internationally.”

The play has a convoluted history, and Rose was not involved with the first American version (it’s a long story). He wrote his first script for a 1964 British production, adhering closely to the film with a few additions. The play finally made it to Broadway 40 years later, but Rose didn’t live to see it; he died two years earlier, in 2002.

REGINALD ROSE (Playwright)

Born and raised in New York, Reginald Rose was one of the most sought-after writers in the Golden Age of Television. In 1951, he sold his first script, The Bus to Nowhere – a story about alien abduction – to CBS; the teleplay aired on a sci-fi anthology called Out There. But his passion was social justice, and within a few years he made a name for himself writing teleplays about important issues that were broadcast live by some of the era’s most prestigious anthology series. 12 Angry Men was produced by Studio One in 1954. Three years later, Rose would co-produce the film version with the movie’s star, Henry Fonda. Although he wrote numerous movies for the big and small screens – most notably 12 Angry Men and the film adaptation of Brian Clark’s play Whose Life Is It Anyway? – and a handful of plays, including his adaptation of 12 Angry Men – his preferred medium was TV. One of his greatest successes was the series The Defenders (1961-65), which he created and supervised. He also wrote 11 episodes of the show, and two earned him Emmy Awards. His first Emmy was for 12 Angry Men; he also received two Academy Award nominations for the film version. Rose died in 2002 at the age of 81.
