*VIDEO* Redwings launch Christmas animation voiced by Dame Joanna Lumley Redwings Horse Sanctuary has launched its Christmas animation for 2023, which celebrates the life and legacy of Black Beauty author Anna Sewell, with a voiceover by Dame Joanna Lumley.

he actor, presenter, author and campaigner donated her services to the largest horse welfare charity in the UK for the project - which premiered on Redwings’ social media this morning (Saturday 25th November) following a private screening at The Priory in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk last night. The special event also celebrated Redwings’ new fundraising edition of Black Beauty, the world-famous novel, which has been produced in conjunction with the UEA Publishing Project and launched on the anniversary of its original publication date. Redwings is the custodian of Anna Sewell House, the birthplace of the author, on Church Plain in the town and has opened the historic building to the public, welcoming hundreds of visitors this year including Her Majesty the Queen! Nicola Knight, Head of Communications and Campaigns at Redwings and a lifelong fan of Black Beauty, said: “This year has been a whirlwind for us here at Redwings. We feel so honoured to have been given the opportunity to look after this special house and the wonderful partnerships we’ve developed because of it. “This is the first time Black Beauty has directly raised funds for the animals Anna Sewell loved so much and we are indebted to the UEA for the opportunity to work with them on this beautiful edition of the book – which we hope will make it into many a Christmas stocking. “Dame Joanna Lumley’s support on our animation is something we dreamed of and we’re so grateful for the generous gift of her time. “We have received some wonderful words from well-known fans of the book from the literary and animal welfare world for which we are so thrilled, and one of these, Master English Saddle Maker, presenter and author Suzie Fletcher, very kindly read a chapter for us at the event last night. “The shared legacy of Anna and us

I am Hopping Mad! Mistress is itching all over now too (physiological) but I don’t feel too sorry for her as unlike me she is not getting bitten a ‘zillion’ times. The vet gave me a flea pill and antibiotics adding to all the other medication I have to take for my liver problems. I badly need a groom but I can’t stand too long for the local groomer so we are having to wait until I get a bit stronger.

Miss Itchy, scratchy!

Dear Friends, While I’m writing my column I have to stop in between typing on my ‘paw top’ to have a good scratch all over my furry body. Mistress took me to the vets yesterday as I’d started to make areas on my skin very sore - particularly on my nether region!! And guess what!!! I HAVE FLEES! I am hopping mad! Never in all my years have I had these little pests before and since I don’t mix with other dogs and cats I don’t know how I caught them! Because my back legs don’t work properly now I am old and arthritic, they have become even weaker due to me trying to get into some very difficult positions to nibble my bottom.

In the meanwhile because I am so furry Mistress has been using a Groomi Deshedding Brush from www.groomi.co.uk You can see how much better I look (and feel) from my photo! Despite not being that well, I am still getting excited about Christmas because I always get new toys and treats and as Mistress has time off she can devote more time spoiling me. I also remind myself how lucky I am and think about other dogs who are looking for a place to call home. Hopefully the new year will bring them loving new owners. Keep warm and safe my furry and feathered friends and may all your wishes come true in 2024.

Brighton charity offers hope to people experiencing homelessness and their dogs A Brighton charity which supports people experiencing homelessness is celebrating being endorsed under the Dogs Trust Welcoming Dogs scheme. This endorsement is given to homelessness services that strive to keep people experiencing homelessness, and their dogs, together and work with Dogs Trust to do so safely and responsibly.

he Seagull Project offers a safe and stable temporary home for people experiencing homelessness. It has seven houses located across Brighton and Hove which provide shared accommodation for single adults. To allow more people to access this vital support, the charity offers pet-friendly temporary accommodation and welcomes owners experiencing homelessness to bring their dogs with them. The Seagull Project’s dog-friendly policies are great news for dog owners experiencing homelessness in Brighton. In a recent survey of professionals supporting those experiencing homelessness, 70% told Dogs Trust that their clients had experienced barriers for accessing homelessness services because they have a dog. To ensure its pet-friendly policies are implemented with due care and attention to both the owner and the animal, the Seagull Project has worked with the Welcoming Dogs endorsement scheme at Dogs Trust. The project works directly with homelessness services to support them to become dog-friendly by providing bespoke support and ongoing advice on everything; from dog-friendly policies to behaviour resources. The project also provides starter packs of dog items to help new dogs feel welcome at homelessness services.

Sarah Lobo, Seagull Project Manager, says: “We are delighted to be endorsed by Dogs Trust under their Welcoming Dogs scheme. Our team is committed to creating and providing a person-centred, supportive environment, and we appreciate that dogs can play a major role in the lives of people accessing our services. We are so appreciative to Dogs Trust for collaborating with us in this project and ensuring that our clients can maintain a special bond with their dogs.” Abigail Owens, from Dogs Trust’s Hope Project says: “It’s great news that Seagull Project is providing pet friendly accommodation for people experiencing homelessness. Many dog owners experiencing homelessness are forced to make the heart-breaking decision to give up their beloved pets just so they can have somewhere safe and secure to sleep. “We don’t think anyone should have to choose between a bed or their faithful

Tabby McTat lends a paw to help a children’s cat club The star of Magic Light Pictures’ heartwarming Christmas animation for the BBC this year, Tabby McTat, is helping launch a Cats Protection club for young children.

he much-loved picturebook character, created by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, is the furry face that will launch the Little Paws Club, which helps children aged between 5 to 7 years old to learn more about the wonderful world of felines through a fun and colourful mailing each month. Children who join the club in December will receive a welcome pack containing a Tabby McTat colouring sheet, a poster and six Cat Snaps cards including a Tabby McTat Special. Each month after they will get a minimagazine containing fun articles, puzzles and craft activities and the first issue will feature an exclusive interview with Julia Donaldson herself. Parents will need to sign their children up by 1 December to get this special edition magazine.

Tabby McTat’s Amazing Cat Facts will also feature in all 2024 mini-magazines and there will be three other Tabby McTat Special mini-mags throughout 2024. Dogs Trust Basildon issues advice to keep dogs warm and safe during cold spell As the temperature begins to drop, and with snow and freezing weather set to hit parts of the UK, Dogs Trust Basildon is urging owners to follow some simple steps to keep their dogs safe and warm this winter.

hile many people enjoy a winter stroll, the cold weather poses several risks to dogs and their owners. To help ensure dogs remain healthy and happy, the nation’s largest dog welfare charity has published some easy-to-follow guidance. 1. Stay warm - Dogs feel the cold just like we do, so it is important to keep them warm. Some breeds grow thick furry coats all year round, so, as the weather gets colder, consider letting your dog's fur grow longer to give them added protection. Some shorter-haired pooches and puppies may need a little bit of help staying warm, so consider buying them a sensible winter coat. Wearing a coat is a new experience for some dogs and needs to be introduced in a gradual and positive way. 2. Keep your dog on the lead - If it’s snowing, keep your dog on a lead to protect and prevent them from falling and hurting themselves. Snow can be disorientating for dogs, and they can become easily lost in it. Make sure your dog is wearing a collar, and their microchip details are up to date. 3. Wipe after walking - Make sure you wipe your dog’s legs, feet and stomach after a walk, as grit from the roads and dampness from rain or snow can irritate their skin. 4. Don’t let your dog walk on frozen ponds - The ice may not be thick enough to take their weight. If your dog does fall through the ice never be tempted to go in after them. If possible, encourage them to swim back to you and call the emergency services. 5. Avoid antifreeze – It is highly poisonous but tasty to dogs. Make sure you always keep antifreeze and other chemicals well out of reach and be sure to quickly mop up any spills. Always seek veterinary advice if you think your dog has ingested any. 8

Buster the German Shepherd enjoyng the snow 6. Increase visibility - Your own safety is important too. Before heading out for a walk, make sure that you are dressed appropriately for the weather with a suitable coat and shoes, and ensure you and your dog are visible. As the days grow shorter, consider wearing a high-vis jacket, and use a reflective collar, lead, high visibility coat or flashing collar for your dog. Coats and flashing collars should be introduced gradually to ensure dogs are comfortable wearing them. 7. Check your lead - Regularly check your dog's leads, collars and harnesses to make sure they’re all functioning safely and won’t get damaged by winter weather, as wet weather can cause metal clips to rust. It can be trickier to do up lead clips and carabiners and attach them to collars and harnesses when it's cold, so do this indoors if you can. 8. Consider indoor games - You might be spending more time indoors if the weather's very bad, so always make sure your dog has plenty to do. Indoor games like hide and seek, or 'find it', are fun and mentally stimulating for your dog. Hide a toy for them to search for and play with them as a reward when they

find them. Long-lasting tasty chews, or rubber food-releasing toys and enrichment games are useful for giving your dog something enjoyable to do that is mentally stimulating. Lisa Cooper, Manager at Dogs Trust Basildon, says: “Winter walks can be a lot of fun for both people and dogs alike, and many dogs love to run and play in the snow. Hampshire pet retailer takes a stand against XL Bully legislation and “welcomes all breeds” The managing director of a leading pet supermarket across the South Coast has said the new XL Bully legislation is “simply unfair” and another knee jerk response by the Government.

eborah Burrows of Healthy Pet Store in Totton said she was very saddened to hear that another breed is being unfairly punished under the Dangerous Dogs Act. The Government has also offered £200 in ‘compensation’ to dog guardians for euthanasia. The legislation outlines that from 31 December 2023, breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an American XL Bully dog to stray will be illegal. From 1st February 2024, it will become illegal to own an American XL Bully dog if they are not registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs. There has already been confusion surrounding the potential misunderstanding of the breed classifications. Concerns have been raised from police forces, charities and vets who will be responsible for enforcing the law and euthanizing healthy animals. Deborah said: “I am so sad for responsible caregivers of these dogs who have all been tarnished with the same brush. Despite renowned behaviourists advising the Government about this breed, the UK has added another type of dog to the Dangerous Dogs list. “This is a result of the Government

failing to enforce legislation surrounding breeding animals and responsible pet ownership. “A dog’s life is priceless. They are part of a family and it is appalling that anyone could think £200 could justify putting an animal to sleep. he UK’s growing litter problem is significantly impacting the way dog owners conduct their walks with over a quarter of owners (26%) fearful that their dog will die whilst out on their daily walk. A third (32%) of owners worry that their dog will come to serious harm, whilst 29% admit to changing their routes to avoid litter and a further 29% refusing to take their dog off their lead in certain areas. The new study by Agria Pet Insurance, which surveyed a diverse group of dog owners across the UK, delves into the concerns of dog owners regarding the UK's litter problem and its effects on their dogs. The respondents expressed several worries, including ingestion resulting in internal organ damage (54%), cuts and wounds (43%), ingestion resulting in choking (42%) and intoxication resulting from exposure to dangerous substances (37%). The study also identified the types of litter that owners fear the most in terms of posing a significant threat to both dogs and the environment. ● Sharp objects such as glass (68%) ● Discarded food items, such as meat bones (38%) ● Drug paraphernalia, such as syringes (35%) ● Plastic waste (34%) ● Vapes (31%) Respondents most frequently noticed litter on the street (52%), in parks/recreational grounds (44%) and in woodland areas (44%). The results of this research highlight the urgency of adopting sustainable practices to combat the litter problem in areas frequented by dog walkers to

create safer and more enjoyable environments for dogs and their owners. This includes increased public awareness, responsible disposal of litter, and improved waste management systems. To further awareness of this prominent issue, Agria has partnered with Paws On Plastic, a UK charity (no. SCO51306) dedicated to environmental stewardship, bringing invaluable expertise and a proven track record in fostering positive change. Paws on Plastic encourages dog owners to pick up a couple of pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, communities and the environment. It also educates on the consequences of littering. Furthermore, the collaboration extends to the involvement of internationally recognised animal rights activist and model, Jodie Kidd. Jodie's passion for the cause and her influential reach

Alarming Number of Pet Dental Issues Sparks Urgent Call to Action for Responsible Pet Owners Keeping your pet’s mouth clean and healthy is all part of being a responsible pet owner. Poor dental health and gum disease are so common that the British Veterinary Dental Association states that most dogs over three have gum disease requiring treatment.

ccording to The Royal Veterinary College, periodontal disease (ie dental disease) affects over 90% of adult dogs. According to a VetCompass study from the Royal Veterinary College that was supported by Agria Pet Insurance, dental disease is the most common disorder diagnosed by vets in dogs, affecting one in eight of every dog in the UK every year (O'Neill et al. 2021). Just like our own teeth, our pet's teeth can develop a build-up of plaque which, if left untreated, can become tartar - a 14

hard substance made up of bad bacteria. This builds up like concrete on the teeth and can eventually cause gum infection (gingivitis). You will know your pet has gingivitis if they have red, swollen gums that can sometimes bleed and may result in a bad odour from their mouth. Ask your vet about the health of your dog’s teeth and gums each time you visit the veterinary surgery. Gingivitis can lead to bacteria travelling through your dog’s bloodstream and, in extreme

cases, has been known to cause heart and kidney problems. If you notice a build of tartar on your pet’s teeth or would like advice on looking after their mouth, always contact your vet.

As always, prevention is better than cure and dental health in dogs is no exception. And the risk is not the same for all dogs. Another VetCompass study supported by Agria Pet Insurance examined what types of dogs are most at risk of dental disease. The breeds with the highest risk included Toy Poodle, King Charles, Greyhound, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Yorkshire Terrier, Cockapoo or Chihuahua, Lurcher, Border Terrier, miniature Dachshund, Whippet, Bichon Frise, and Cocker Spaniel. The risk was higher generally in smaller sizes of dogs and rose dramatically as dogs got older. So do pay extra care to your dog’s dental health if your dog is a high-risk breed or is no longer a puppy.

Brushing your dog’s teeth

To maintain good oral hygiene in your dog, start brushing early in their life and keep it simple. Begin by gently stroking your dog's cheek to get them used to mouth handling. Gradually introduce toothpaste by letting them lick it. Progress slowly up to full brushing of the teeth, respecting your dog’s comfort throughout the process. Only use an animal-friendly toothpaste as human toothpaste is toxic to dogs Once your dog is comfortable with toothpaste on their gums, transition to a soft toothbrush, starting at the front and moving to the back using gentle circular motions. Ensure you’re using animalfriendly toothpaste.

Robin Hargreaves, Senior Veterinary Adviser at Agria Pet Insurance, explains: “Our dogs should be with us into their teens, but the animals they evolved from didn’t live anything like to this age – and so their teeth are not designed for longevity. "Left uncared for, the likelihood is that they will deteriorate, giving your dog gum disease and mouth and gum pain. But by simply encouraging your dog to chew on something appropriate to use their teeth, that won't break or splinter, can really help to keep the surfaces clean. “Owners can also get into the habit of cleaning their dog’s teeth - which is not that daunting once you both get the hang of it. Start as early as you can so it’s not scary and they get used to it from a young age and reward them afterwards. Cleaning dogs’ teeth is effective and helps to keep the tartar down – which otherwise traps food against the gums, erodes them back and causes infections.”

Changing your pet’s diet to a dry biscuit kibble will also help in the fight against dental disease. Tinned meat and pouches of pet food can contribute to plaque build-up so adding in dry food or changing over to a complete dry diet can help a great deal.

When a lifesaving dog needs their own life saved Minnie, a beautiful 5 year old Newfoundland from Lancaster, is no stranger to helping to save lives. She has donated blood four times, which will have helped to save the lives of up to 16 other dogs. However, when Minnie was struck down by a life-threatening infection, she herself had to rely on the very service she was used to supporting: Pet Blood Bank UK, the nation’s blood bank charity for dogs.

t was being a donor that first alerted Minnie’s owner Victoria to the infection festering inside her. She had no symptoms but her annual blood screen, something Pet Blood Bank performs on all donor dogs, showed an increased level of white blood cells, indicating inflammation and possible infection. Minnie was treated immediately by Bay Vets for what was originally thought to be inflamed skin on her ears. However, Minnie’s condition continued to deteriorate, and an ultrasound revealed pyometra, a serious and potentially life-threatening infection which can cause kidney failure. Minnie underwent emergency surgery to remove her infected womb and initially recovered well from the operation. A few days later, though, Minnie was back in the vets where it was discovered that she was becoming anaemic due to a bleeding stomach ulcer. To treat this, Minnie needed two and a half units of blood, provided by the very service she had donated to herself. After her own blood had helped to save the lives of so many other dogs, she was now the one in need. Finally, Minnie was sent home to recover, her ordeal behind her. She slowly regained her strength and is getting back to her happy and bouncy self. Her owner, Victoria, said, ‘Pet Blood Bank found early warning signs at Minnie’s last donation and contacted me immediately, which meant she was treated early. It is entirely due to this quick response and the outstanding care received at Bay Vets during her illness and recovery that she is still with me, covering my house in hair, drool, and love. She acts as emotional

Titan’s owner, Rachel, said, ‘That is the best news, exactly why we do it! Titan is an excitable Labrador, he is hyper and ball obsessed. I'm always so surprised he can stay still and donate, but he impresses me every time. He always enjoys the fuss and being spoilt on days he donates. It’s so lovely to hear that he has been able to help another dog.’ Finch’s owner, Alex, told us ‘I genuinely started crying when I read your email, I’m so proud of my boy! I’m currently training to be a veterinary nurse and found out about Pet Blood Bank through a client before I even had Finch. I’d never forgotten about it though and he

went to his first donation session a few weeks after he turned one. He’s a great dog, the perfect mix of smart and goofy. He’s loved both sessions he’s been too and loves the fuss he gets from the team.’ Lynne, who owns Douglas, added ‘I must admit it did make me well up as I thought if it was one of my dogs having the unfortunate situation of needing blood how grateful I would be. Will Billy, Fergus and Luna get re-homed before Christmas to light up their lives? Billy is a 7yr old neutered tri coloured short coated collie cross

He came into our care as his owners partner was diagnosed with dementia meaning he couldn't care for Billy whilst the owner was at work. Billy is a little shy particularly around men. Once he knows a person he is very affectionate but requires an understanding owner who will give him space to build a bond. He is housetrained, ok when left alone for odd hours, travels well and knows basic commands. He wouldn't live with another dog. He is nervous of traffic and lunges at larger vehicles. In August 2022 when getting Billy out the car he nipped a male neighbour on the leg, as a result Billy's previous owner was served with a community resolution order which meant they had to keep him on a lead and muzzled when in a public place. Whilst this requirement was on the previous owner we would suggest this be followed by any new owner.

Dog Trust’s free Post Adoption Support Service celebrates ﬁve years thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery Since its launch in 2018, Dog Trust’s free Post Adoption Support service has been used over 300,000 times by dog owners across the UK. The free scheme, which can be used by anyone who has adopted a pup from Dogs Trust links dog owners with post adoption support officers and behaviorists to gain expert advice.

ver the past five years the Post Adoption Support service has helped with a variety of dogs, Collie Malinois cross, Bear is just one of these dogs who has been transformed through this service. When Alina and Tony met Bear at Dog Trust’s Evesham centre it was love at first sight. Aware of his behaviour challenges, they met him multiple times at the centre before they took him home. It’s believed that handsome Bear had never lived in a home before, having spent his life so far on a farm. Bear’s unconventional start in life left him nervous and unpredictable around other animals and people too. At first, Bear was very anxious around people and other dogs, even hiding behind the sofa when meeting his new owners for the first time. As Bear was struggling to adjust, adopters Alina and Tony contacted Dog Trust’s Post Adoption Support service. The team organised a visit from one of Dog Trust’s clinical animal behaviourists who worked with the new owners to build Bear’s confidence and create a training plan. “The session was very helpful, but the real support only just started,” recalls Tony. After the session, they had regular email support for a couple of years as they continued their training journey. “With Bear, there wasn’t going to be a ‘quick fix’; we had to take the journey to change together. We made a commitment to him, so giving him back was not an option. Bear is a completely different dog now, and we couldn’t imagine life without him. The three of us did it together.” The Post Adoption Support service has been generously supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, with over £600,000 of funds raised dedicated to the scheme over the past five years. This also funds the charity’s post adoption research projects which enables Dogs Trust to provide the best possible advice to adopters.

fter having him examined by vet, it became clear that the pup had suffered from malnutrition growing up, which had thwarted his bone development. RANA – Rescue Animals of North Africa (www.ra-na.com and www.fb.com/Rana.Rescues) first met Jako in December 2014, wondering how on earth they could ever help him. Enquiries with vets in the UK and Europe about what it would take to make him walk normally brought up such eye-watering quotes that they were unable to help, other than keeping him safe in the shelter. As Jako grew up into a beautiful adult GSD, his amazingly caring personality also developed. Jako started spending time with the puppies at the shelter, caring for them and keeping them at a 26

safe distance from the bigger dogs. He also befriended every human who cared to pass by, and this, in the end, is what gave him his chance to life in the real world … This June, RANA volunteer Wendy met Jako and fell head over heels in love with this sweet boy. She took a video and posted and shared him all around Facebook. That is when the Helpline stepped in to help. Jako arrived in the UK in November 2015 paid for by the GSD Helpline. Jako’s consultation on the 21st December 2015 at Fitzpatrick Referrals showed many problems and all consistent with trauma. It was estimated that this happened at around 4-5 months of age. He was kept in and operated on while remaining there over the Christmas period. He had both his front legs and ankles fused. This is usually done one at a time but as he is so disabled the surgeon felt that it wouldn’t be a problem for him. The left

one is very deformed and a small bone in his ankle that the ligaments run under had broken away and actually moved up into a completely wrong position further up the leg. Because of the damage to www.rescueandanimalcare.com

Jako now this foot, he has a problem with the left elbow. His right hip is completely dislocated and sits above his pelvis. He will need a hip replacement.

UPDATE MARCH 2016

Jako was suddenly taken ill with acute kidney failure. We rushed him to the Royal Veterinary College in Berkshire where he underwent extensive investigations. Tests revealed that he was suffering from Elrichia and Leishmania. Treatment was started and his kidneys are now functioning normally. He continues to improve and will be monitored regularly for Leishmania. He is one amazing little dog. He now lives with the founder Brenda Jojic. UPDATE January 2017, Jako has been having regular blood tests and treatment for Leishmania. We are hoping that as soon as he is in remission, we will be able to complete his surgery for a total hip replacement. UPDATE March 2017 Jako had a sore on his paw that wouldn’t fully heal. Tests for Leishmania came back negative so it was a trip back to Fitzpatrick’s for further investigations. X-rays showed that a screw had worked its way out, so it was decided to remove the whole plate and screws. He is now home and recovering well. www.rescueandanimalcare.com

September 2023 Jako had an emergency referral and MRI and CT scans revealed he had a slipped disc in his neck at C2-C3 which are located near his head. CT of Jako’s neck and thorax (chest) revealed bony malformations causing a kyphosis and scoliosis (twisting) but this is further down and doesn’t prevent an operation. It is something that he has had all his life. He now needs an operation to remove the bulge in the disc that is pressing on the spinal cord.

Arthritis in dogs: What is it and how to help your pup Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that causes stiff, painful, and swollen joints. In dogs, it mostly affects their hips and elbows, but can also occur in their back. While most common in older dogs, arthritis can affect pets of any age. If you suspect your furry friend is struggling with their joint health, the experts from Bob Martin have offered their tips for recognising and treating arthritis in dogs. Which breeds are more prone to arthritis?

Weight, activity levels, and age can all contribute to joint health. Some breeds are more prone to weight gain and high activity levels, which can put them at a higher risk of joint conditions like arthritis. Larger breeds tend to be more prone to joint problems like arthritis due to their increased body weight. These breeds include Labradors, German shepherds, golden retrievers, rottweilers, Bernese Mountain dogs, and Saint Bernards. Many large breeds are also particularly active, which can 28

put further strain on their joints. Other dog breeds, such as pugs, dachshunds, and French and English bulldogs, are more likely to develop arthritis due to their small build. These dogs can be prone to weight gain as well, which puts extra pressure on their joints. Bulldogs are also more likely to see wonkiness in their legs if their joints aren’t formed properly, which can lead to arthritis. While large and small dogs are more prone to arthritis, some medium-sized breeds can also be more likely to develop the condition due to high activity levels. Spaniels are a prime example of

this. Naturally active, spaniels' joints can become overused at an early age.

How to spot early signs of arthritis in dogs

While some dog breeds are more prone to getting the condition, this doesn't necessarily mean your dog will or won't get arthritis. If you're worried about your dog's joints, it's worth keeping an eye on their behaviour. How to treat arthritis in dogs

Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are some treatments you can try to help ease symptoms and make your dog more comfortable. These include:

Joint supplements

A healthy, balanced diet can contribute to your dog's overall health and wellbeing and ensuring your dog is eating well can help them shed a few pounds if their weight is affecting their joints. You could also add joint supplements containing adding omega-3 to your pet's diet as this is thought to help fight inflammation. Cat dumped like rubbish seeks new home in time for Christmas Overlooked moggy, whose care is being supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, needs a home to call her own

young black cat is seeking a home ahead of the festive season, after being found discarded like rubbish along with her two five-month-old kittens. The feline family was discovered tied up in a bag in a public park on 26 August and brought straight to Cats Protection’s Harrow Homing Centre. The one-year-old moggy, who was named Buttercup, and her kittens had a full health check by a vet, along with flea and worming treatment and vaccinations. The kittens were in fairly good health, but Buttercup’s skin and coat were in poor condition from living with fleas. With some treatment and TLC her skin healed up over the following four weeks. Buttercup’s kittens were adopted in September, but she has sadly been overlooked since being made available for homing. She has spent quite a lot of time in a foster home, to help rebuild her trust in humans and get her ready for adoption after her ordeal. After four months in the charity’s care, the team is keen to give her the gift of a loving new home in time for Christmas. Nicola Murray, Deputy Manager at Cats Protection’s Harrow Homing Centre, said: “We’d really love to find Buttercup a permanent home before Christmas. Her fosterer tells us that she's grown from a very nervous cat, who spent all day hidden away, to an affectionate girl. She has even jumped onto their lap a couple of times. “Being a young cat, Buttercup is also quite playful. She spends hours

entertaining herself with her various toys - mice, straws, and string. Given time to gain confidence, she will make a wonderful addition to someone’s household. “Sadly, Buttercup is one of 43 cats we’ve taken into the centre that have either been dumped in a public space or left outside our centre this year – about 10% of our admissions. It’s just lucky that she and her kittens were found in time and nothing more serious happened to them. “We understand that times are tough for people, with the current cost of living crisis. But we would ask people to please, please get in touch with us if they’re struggling, rather than dumping their cats. We won’t judge, and we will help as soon as we’re able to. “We’re incredibly grateful to players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Funds received thanks to their support help us care for hundreds of cats and kittens in need each year. We really can’t thank them enough.” To date, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £1.2 billion to support good causes across Britain. Cat presumed dead found ﬁve miles from home 11 years later A tabby-and-white cat named Toby who was believed to have been killed on a busy road in Nuneaton, has been reunited with his owners 11 years after going missing thanks to his microchip.

he 14-year-old moggy’s owners, Justine and Eric Allan, moved with their family and beloved cat from Galley Common to The Long Shoot in early December 2012. They kept Toby indoors for around six weeks after they first moved and then started letting him out in short bursts to grow accustomed to his new neighbourhood but sadly one day he did not return. Justine explains: “Toby was my son Charlie’s cat, he was about 12 when Toby went missing, and he was heartbroken when we realised he probably wasn’t coming back. The Long Shoot is a notoriously busy road, we just assumed the worst had happened and thought he had been run over.” Luckily, Wendy Harris, Coordinator for Cats Protection’s Coventry Branch had been contacted by a member of the public who had been feeding a cat in Bedworth on-and-off for around 18 months. The lady believed it was a female cat who had put weight on between visits and therefore might be pregnant. Having not seen the cat for a long period, when she spotted it around the bin stores at her flat she called the charity to arrange for them to visit and attempt to scan it for a microchip. Wendy says: “A lady rang us late on Saturday evening when the cat appeared and our volunteer Lorraine went out at 9pm to scan the cat and it turned out not only did it have a chip but that he was a neutered male named Toby, rather than female as originally believed. I checked the details on the chip database and called the registered owner, however there was no reply until the following morning when Charlie rang and said he did have a cat called Toby and he had been missing almost 12 years! “So, after a few phone calls back and forth Toby was collected and will no longer have to scavenge for food and sleep in a cold bin store. Thanks to the kind lady who asked for our help, to Lorraine for going out late at night to scan and most of all the power of the microchip.”

Justine says: “I can’t believe he survived all this time, the odds were stacked against him, but here he is! We now have a year-old King Charles Cavalier named Bernie. Toby is a typical cat and couldn’t care less but Bernie is not adjusting quite so well. We’re keeping them apart so that we can do slow introductions, but when my husband took Bernie out for the first time after Toby was back I let Toby out of his room and he made himself at right home on Bernie’s bed and even tried a bit of his food. “He doesn’t seem different at all, he’s obviously been cared for and fed by somebody, I just wish he could tell us what happened. I never thought in a million years I’d see him again. Think of all those things that have happened in that time. I’m so grateful to the lady who took him in and to Cats Protection for coming out on Saturday night especially as he wasn’t easy to catch! We’ll keep him in now for six to eight weeks and then hope for the best he stays.” Microchipping is a simple, effective way of reuniting cats with their owners should they be lost, injured or stolen. It involves a microchip the size of a grain of rice containing the cat’s owner’s contact details being implanted just

under the skin between a cat’s shoulder blades. Madison Rogers, Cats Protection’s Head of Advocacy, Campaigns & Government Relations says: “It is always wonderful to hear stories like Toby’s where a cat and owner have been reunited thanks to their microchip after so many years apart. We cannot know what happened to Toby before he was scanned but we encourage anybody who finds a cat who they believe to be lost or stray to take them to a vet or contact an animal rescue charity where they can be checked for a microchip. “Although this is a wonderful happy ending for Toby, if only he had been found and scanned when he first disappeared, he could have been back with his family all this time. Luckily Toby’s owner’s details were current and his story is a fantastic example of just how important it is to keep details up to date and how quickly a cat can be returned. He may have been missing for 11 years but because of his microchip he was back home within 24 hours of his owners being contacted!” Earlier this year, the government announced that compulsory microchipping for cats would become law in England from 10 June 2024, a move which Cats Protection has campaigned for over many years. The new rules mean cats must be microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age and owners’ contact details must be kept up to date in a microchipping database. MPs and peers join Cats Protection to ﬁnd out how charity is helping domestic abuse victims Cats Protection welcomed around 50 MPs and members of the House of Lords to discuss how the charity is supporting victim-survivors flee domestic abuse.

he UK’s biggest cat charity hosted the parliamentary reception to raise awareness among politicians of its Lifeline service, which provides free and confidential cat fostering to enable owners to escape domestic abuse. The charity used the event to highlight findings revealing that 78% of domestic abuse professionals surveyed had encountered cases where cats were targeted by abusers – often to control or coerce a partner or family member and to stop them leaving. Because most refuges are unable to take pets, cat owners face the agonising choice of remaining with their abuser or fleeing without their pet, knowing it may come to harm. Horrifyingly, the survey also revealed that 39% of domestic abuse professionals have encountered cases where a cat or kitten has been killed by a perpetrator of domestic abuse. Cats Protection’s Lifeline Manager, Amy Hyde said “We were pleased to welcome so many politicians to our reception to discuss this incredibly important issue. Sadly, far too many people feel trapped living with an abuser out of fear for the safety of their pet. “Perpetrators of domestic abuse will use their partner or family member’s love for their cat as a tool to coerce and control them. We’ve worked on cases where a perpetrator has physically abused the cat as well as controlling the owner’s access to finances and vet care, meaning that many cats are left with untreated injuries and health conditions. “Using a beloved cat as a tool for coercive control can have a huge impact on those experiencing domestic abuse and makes it even more challenging for them to leave if they are worried about what will happen to their cat if left behind.

Cats Protection Chief Executive John May at the event “This is especially the case for those who have experienced economic abuse and are financially dependent on the perpetrator, as well as those who have been isolated from friends and family and have limited other options to keep their cat safe.” Sarah Champion MP, who sponsored the event on the charity’s behalf, said: “I was delighted to sponsor this event and to support the work of Cats Protection’s important Lifeline service. It is vital that we do everything we can to help those experiencing domestic abuse to get to safety together with their pet. wo-year-old Jordan was handed in as unwanted at the vets so much of his background is unknown, but when he arrived at Cats Protection’s Ferndown Adoption Centre over 200 days ago he was suffering from painful skin sores. The team ensured he had immediate vet care, and the black and-white cat soon began to look healthier as his skin condition was resolved with the aid of antibiotics, steroids and a change of diet. Once out of discomfort, Jordan’s sociable and affectionate personality shone through. Centre Manager Michele says: “Jordan is an absolute sweetheart who just adores company. He is a confident super sociable lad who actively seeks attention, particularly liking to smooch your face! company and will want to sit on your lap and snuggle into your arms, often placing his paws on your shoulders for a proper cuddle which is just adorable. “He is also very playful and is partial to a game of chase with a fishing rod toy or the challenge of an enrichment feeder for his dry food. “We’re not quite sure what caused his skin to flare up but it’s not uncommon when cats have had a difficult time for their skin to show the effects of their stress. It may also be that he was fed a diet which did not suit him, so he’s now enjoying a hypo-allergenic diet which is helping soothe his itchy skin.” The team at the centre are keen to find an owner who is not concerned about managing Jordan’s occasional skin flare-ups which it is believed may subside when he is settled in a calm environment. He currently takes steroids once a day in his food which he will need

to continue, along with his prescription diet, in his new home. Jordan will need to be the only pet in his new home, so that he can enjoy as much affection as he wishes, and the team feels he would live well with a family because of his friendly nature. Like all Cats Protection cats, Jordan will arrive in his new home neutered, vaccinated, up-to-date with flea and worm treatments and with four weeks of free pet insurance. Charity pulls out the stops for cats suffering long-term skin trauma A cat charity is pulling out the stops for two felines who arrived at its adoption centre with skin conditions so severe that one needed both ears removed.

hite-and-tabby Jess and Jinx arrived at Cats Protection’s Cornwall Adoption Centre after their owner had become unable to care for them. They had scarring, severe scabbing and cancerous changes to their skin. The 14-year-old pair arrived at a time when the number of cats waiting for a space at the centre in Carnon Downs is 57% higher than this time last year, with six cats now waiting for every admissions pen. Libby Jepson, Cats Protection’s Operations Manager for the South West, says: “Poor Jess and Jinx were in a terrible state when they arrived, both with painful, infected and bleeding skin. It was clear they would both need a significant amount of veterinary treatment before they would be able to go to new homes. “Jinx was suffering from cancer of her ear tips, which is common in cats with white ears. She has now had surgery to remove the majority of both ears, which has removed the cancerous areas. She has recovered well and is back on track to looking her best! “Jess was suffering with allergic skin disease when she came into our care, with sore, itchy patches on her face. Thanks to the vital veterinary care, attention and medication she has received at the centre, these are slowly beginning to clear up, and we’re so pleased to see her beautiful white fur starting to grow back!” In addition to their skin treatment and tests for cancerous changes, both Jess and Jinx have needed dental treatment and will need further veterinary visits before they are ready to be re-homed. Their veterinary care has cost the centre over £1500 to-date and the team expects it to rise. They have therefore raised an appeal to help cover the costs 38

“My house is now a home again”, after adopting rescue dog Badger. Long-legged Lurcher ﬁnds lasting love A rescue dog who spent 21 months at Dogs Trust Darlington Rehoming Centre has landed on his paws by finding true love with his new owner.

acqui Dunn from Prudhoe in Northumberland feels she is the lucky one after adopting sevenyear-old Lurcher Badger in July, who she describes as “the sweetest, most adorable dog ever.” Badger came into Dogs Trust care from Ireland in November 2021 who no information about his past life. He found life in kennels stressful and sadly attracted little interest from anyone looking to adopt so was promoted as an ‘underdog’ - which is the term given to a dog that has been overlooked and spent more than six months in Dogs Trust care. In June this year Jacqui, who lost her beloved rescue dog Otis to cancer in March, completed an online application form for another dog at Darlington rehoming centre, but as they already had a new home lined up, Badger was suggested as a possible match. Jacqui wasn’t looking for a specific breed of dog so was very open to adopting a Lurcher. It was a gradual process getting to know Badger involving numerous visits to the centre which then progressed to short home visits with his canine carer Jacob. Badger then spent longer periods of time with Jacqui before having an overnight stay. During the home visits there were lots of little signs that Badger was comfortable and relaxed including when he first jumped on Jaqui’s bed and lay down which was an emotional moment for both Jacqui and Jacob, and it was when she knew that Badger was her boy. Jacqui said: “Badger is absolutely perfect in my eyes. He has his little quirks, including being uncomfortable when he sees other dogs, but I work around them as he works around mine. I am gobsmacked he was in kennels for so long and I feel it is my good fortune that nobody was interested in him as I couldn’t ask for a sweeter dog. “When Otis died earlier this year, I missed the companionship and routine

of dog ownership. I am 100 percent happier now having Badger by my side. He is brilliant with my grandchildren and we most enjoy walks and nights on the sofa together. Needs to be an only pet in an adult only household. He is full of energy. Once you’ve made friends he will love you to bits but this WILL take time.

He needs a job to do and to keep his mind busy aswell as the exercise hes going to require. No cats but would be ok with older children 13 years and up only.

She is still scared of new people so will need a very understanding new owner that is going to be prepared to give her time.

He is a sweet boy with people. He’s typical of the breed, very clever and would excel in some type of training ie obedience and will want an active home with lots of walks.

Bourbon is a very sweet and friendly little dog who loves to say hello to everyone he meets! He enjoys any kind of fuss and loves a cuddle

She has great recall off the lead and is very responsive to training with treats. She is a very affectionate dog and loves to be with you and demand cuddles.

She is a typical lurcher and loves a warm, soft, and comfy bed, and isn't particularly fond of the rain. Rainy enjoys playing with squeaky toys and bones.

Binny has 3 legs and no tail after being involved in a car accident in his previous home, but this doesn't slow him down in the slightest.
