2023 Annual Report

Dear Hopeland Family,

When we sat down in a coffee shop and started imagining what Hopeland could be, we spoke of a possibility that we had not seen amongst many other nonprofits, of collaboration and not competition, of innovation and not inertia, and of best practice and not of the same practice. It is exciting to see that vision become reality in the pages of this Annual Report and to demonstrate how we really can see positive and meaningful change in the lives of vulnerable children through collaboration and innovation.

We are achieving this vision in various ways. Firstly, in partnership with Walk Free, the first ever spotlight on Orphanage Trafficking was included in the latest Global Slavery Index, launched in London this past May. We are so pleased to have collaborated with the Global Slavery Index to highlight the striking and confronting connection between orphanages and human trafficking. This work will influence decision makers across the planet, it was truly a groundbreaking moment for an issue that does not usually get this level of global recognition.

This year was historic for Hopeland as we ran our largest campaign to date that included a petition receiving over 40,000 signatures to bring an end to orphanage trafficking. The petition was submitted to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, urging them to criminalize orphanage trafficking, adopt model legislation to tackle the practice, prioritize family-based care and protection policies and strengthen deinstitutionalization programs and phase out orphanages and other forms of institutional care. Senator Linda Reynolds of Western Australia, presented the resolution in Angola and we’re thrilled it passed - which means 180 countries have agreed to make the changes we petitioned for. Senator Reynolds stated that this petition was some of the most impactful advocacy on this issue worldwide.

2

Complementing our advocacy work Hopeland has also taken strides forwards in our on the ground work, including our partnership with Medair in South Sudan to ensure families can be protected together by the newly designed emergency shelters provided during flood season.

The Hopeland team has also been working closely with Safe Families For Children and their wonderful team to develop the expansion of their services to Australia and we are thrilled to see the positive outcomes from our work with Save Ukraine of rescuing children in Ukraine who were trapped in conflict zones.

We are thankful for you and your wonderful support as we work to find better ways to support the most vulnerable children and ensure they have a safe and nurturing family.

Best wishes,

Nicholas Evans Co-Founder and CEO of Hopeland

Our Mission

A safe and loving family for every child.

Every year there are millions of children separated from their family. Today there are 25 million children waking up every day facing life alone. There are also 333 million children living in extreme poverty, not yet separated from their parents but at high risk of it. These are the children Hopeland is working for.

There are five key causes of this family separation: poverty, lack of education, abuse, conflict, and environmental disaster. These factors create a complex and challenging environment for families, forcing them into crisis, often leading to the separation of parents and children.

Hopeland believes innovative solutions are vital to support families to stay together and provide the best chance for their children.

Every program and campaign that we launch brings a new approach and impacts families facing at least one of these five challenges, as well as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Together we can create a world where every child has a safe, loving family.

In the pages of this report you will learn more about how we’re taking new approaches to prevent family crisis.

In 2023 Hopeland delivered some big wins - especially in our ongoing campaign to end orphanage trafficking. We also had direct impact with our on the ground programs, including the rescue of 353 children from the conflict in Ukraine who were returned safely to their families.

Action 2023 Snapshot

Protecting Families from Flooding

We are on track to expand a pilot of a shelter program in South Sudan. This intervention will protect families during seasonal flooding that routinely uproots around a million people, often separating children from their parents.

Reuniting Children with their Families in Ukraine

This year we have learnt more about the direct impact of the conflict in Ukraine on children, many of whom have been illegally transferred out of Ukraine into Russia. Thanks to the generosity of our donors 353 children have been rescued from this fate and are now reunited with their families and receiving the support they need.

Disrupting the Foster Care System in Australia

Australia has a special connection with Hopeland, so we are excited to be launching Safe Families for Children, a unique family support program. It is expected to transform thousands of families in crisis like it has in the US, Canada and UK.

Advocacy

Shining a Spotlight on Orphanage Trafficking

The Global Slavery Index is the leading authority on human trafficking and worldwide efforts to counter this wicked crime, it is read by world leaders and truly influences global policy. Hopeland was honored to have the opportunity to spotlight the issue of orphanage trafficking in the pages of this year’s publication - the first time this issue has been featured.

Global Change for Orphans

Building on the impact of our spotlight in the Global Slavery Index, Hopeland delivered a petition with over 40,000 signatures to the InterParliamentary Union calling on them to end orphanage trafficking in their 180 member countries. Supported by Hopeland Ambassadors NERVO and many other artists including Paris Hilton, Coldplay, Armin Van Buuren, Like Mike, Lil John, For King and Country and others, our petition had the needed impact as the Resolution passed unanimously.

Keeping Children and Families In Focus

Hopeland promoted our achievements and spread further awareness of our mission through various events during 2023, including a UNGA side event highlighting our petition on orphanage trafficking.

Protecting Families from Flooding

Every year around 1 million people in South Sudan are displaced due to significant flooding. These families are already living in severe poverty and many have fled conflict – adding the devastating threat of flooding has a deeply detrimental impact on the wellbeing of families. Floods put many children at greater risk of abduction and recruitment. Families impacted by flooding in South Sudan are

doing everything they can to keep their families together and provide what their children need – but without help the challenge might prove too much.

That is why Hopeland has partnered with a Swiss-based humanitarian organization, Medair, to support the production and distribution of a brand new approach for South Sudanese families.

“This shelter innovation prioritizes sustainability and resilience, empowering communities with safety and protection, in order to rebuild and recover from crises. By integrating advanced design ideas with local expertise, we are proud to support a project that not only saves lives but also fosters self-reliance and community empowerment.”

This solution provides greater protection for families during environmental crises. The shelters will enable families to be more resilient to the seasonal floods preventing displacement and the separation of children from their parents. Designed to be durable and long-lasting, they offer stability and protection to families repeatedly affected by flooding.

This year the testing phase was completed successfully and the project is on track to continue the roll out in time for the next flooding season.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Juba, and Swiss Technical University EPFL, the shelter kit is a response to worsening seasonal flooding in South Sudan. High costs of imported materials, limited shelter assistance funding, and frequent displacements further exacerbate the situation and jeopardize the adoption of generic shelter solutions seen worldwide. These factors make this intervention especially valuable – this is why Hopeland is working directly with Medair’s Innovation Lab to support this life-saving solution.

The shelter kit is manufactured inside South Sudan by local workers using recycled materials including the re-use of used rubber tires which are turned into the ropes that

A distinguishing feature of the solution is its commitment to sourcing the materials locally and sustainably. The rubber rope utilized in the kit ensures sustainability and locally-sourced bamboo is used in a non-traditional manner removing the need for nails or twine.

The first phase of the project aims to provide flood-resistant homes to 250 families, which will benefit over 1500 people in South Sudan during the two years of the project.

Reuniting Children with their Families in Ukraine ACTION

Earlier this year Hopeland partnered with Save Ukraine to rescue over 350 children from the conflict there.

Too many children have been separated from their families, including children who have been taken across international borders, constituting alleged war crimes. The trauma of witnessing war up close will have a terrible toll on the children of Ukraine for years to come - this is why Save Ukraine’s trauma-informed response to the conflict is so important.

16

Here is just one of the stories of the children rescued through this program:

Thanks to Hopeland’s support, Save Ukraine rescued 20 Ukrainian children in one day from Russian captivity! This is just one rescue out of many totaling 353 children saved with Hopeland’s support.

Save Ukraine learned in August 2023 that Russia manipulated parents into sending their children to a summer camp for vacation. However, they deported these Ukrainian children from Izium, Kupiansk and some villages of Kharkiv oblast, including orphans from foster families to Russia. The children were sent to Gelendzhik in Russia under the pretext of “rehabilitation and care.”

After 2 weeks, the children were supposed to be returned to their families, but this did not happen. The management of the institution where the children were refused to return the children. Parents were simply told, “No” when they asked if they would be returned.

Mothers of these children turned to Save Ukraine for help, as this is not the first experience of such special operations to return children from Russia. The process is full of difficulties, many consultations and coordinated, complicated processes. But, plans succeeded and these precious children are home with their families.

It was later learned that the Russians told the children that they would be taken to orphanages in remote regions of Russia.

2023 Annual Report 17

“It is extremely important for us to save every Ukrainian child,” Nikolai Kuleba, leader of Save Ukraine said. “This is an incredibly emotional moment for everyone, including our team. We will continue taking care of these children and mothers and do our best to return all Ukrainian children home!”

Disrupting the Foster Care System in Australia

Innovation also includes breaking up centuries old assumptions - perhaps we assume that if the state intervenes to separate a child from their parents that it is unsafe for a child to be at home.

What if that parent just needed a break, or some help at home they can’t get from their own family. This premise is the key assumption behind Safe Families

for Children (SFFC) - an evidence-based program that provides support to families in crisis by offering a safe, temporary home for their children, as well as a network of caring volunteers to help parents get back on their feet.

We are designing the pilot to launch in Australia. Following the UK model we expect to have a significant impact in Australia like it has in the US, UK and Canada.

OBJECTIVES:

1

Child Welfare Deflection

Safe Families provides a safe alternative to child welfare custody, significantly reducing the number of children entering foster care.

2 Child Abuse Prevention

Safe Families provides an overwhelmed and resource limited parent with a safe, temporary place for their child without threat of losing custody. By offering support, the goal is to avert potential abuse/neglect episodes.

3 Family Support and Stabilization

Many parents struggle because of limited social support and unavailable extended family. Safe Families volunteers often become the extended family and support system.

Shining a Spotlight on Orphanage Trafficking

Hopeland has partnered with Walk Free to coauthor a spotlight on Orphanage Trafficking, the first time ever this issue has featured in the Global Slavery Index (GSI) – bringing much needed global attention to an issue that rarely receives this level of global acknowledgment.

The GSI has recognized the connection between institutionalized care and human trafficking, identifying orphanages as being deeply connected to exploitation.

This success builds on our work from 2019 which led to the United Nations General Assembly passing a resolution calling for the progressive phasing out of orphanages, moving towards family-based care, and highlighting the urgent need for action.

This major achievement emphasizes the importance for the biggest global players including leading Governments, the United Nations, and major NGOs to solve the crisis of Orphanage Trafficking.

Thank you to our key supporter doTERRA who have helped us achieve this significant milestone.

Together we must ensure our leaders take action to tackle Orphanage Trafficking and end Modern Slavery!

“As the world’s most comprehensive dataset on modern slavery, it was essential that Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index covered the persistent issue of child trafficking through orphanages.

“Orphanages, paradoxically intended as safe spaces, often serve as hotspots for child exploitation and modern slavery. Orphanages can often incentivise unscrupulous actors to traffic vulnerable children for profit and expose them to additional protection risks. Alongside Hopeland’s expertise, Walk Free spotlighted these issues and their pervasive nature.

“Our collaborative work on the Global Slavery Index has brought these egregious practices to the forefront.

“Our joint advocacy demands that no leader can ignore the urgent calls for action to combat the extreme exploitation of children.”

Hopeland’s Petition: Behind The Scenes

What does it take to create a petition and gather over 40,000 signatures in just a few months? When the stakes are this high and we are focused on delivering change for millions of children worldwide growing up in orphanages, it’s always worth the extra work. We’re thankful for the UBS Optimus Foundation who supported the campaign.

Over the summer we worked with our awesome Ambassadors NERVO on how we could build on last year’s anti child labor campaign at Tomorrowland in Belgium. After the success of launching

a campaign in front of 100,000 people in 2022, we knew we wanted to bring more global impact. So this year we launched our Orphanage Trafficking campaign outside the EU Parliament in Belgium during the Tomorrowland weekend and received support from countless artists like Paris Hilton, Coldplay, Armin Van Buuren, Like Mike, Lil John, For King and Country and others.

We also collaborated with our long-time partners Global Citizen to be the platform partner for the campaign to help raise

awareness on the issue of orphanage trafficking to a whole new level and get the signatures we needed to really pile the pressure on the world leaders who can make a difference for children in their countries. In less than 3 months we were able to get over 40,000 signatures on the petition to then share with long time friend, Senator Linda Reynolds of Western Australia, who presented the Resolution in Angola to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

We are so proud of our partnership with Hopeland and delighted that the petition we launched at the EU Parliament in Belgium had such a huge global impact! We are deeply committed to Hopeland’s mission and will keep going until every child has a safe, loving family. It makes us so happy to know that children all over the world will benefit from this victory!

Global Change for Orphans

At a historic meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on October 27th, 2023 a groundbreaking Resolution was passed at the 147th Assembly of that body which calls on all 180 member states of the organization to:

1 Criminalize orphanage trafficking

2 Adopt model legislation to tackle the practice

3 Prioritize family-based care in all child care and protection policies

4 Strengthen deinstitutionalization programs and phase out orphanages and other forms of institutional care

The support and pressure of thousands of Hopeland supporters around the world made a huge difference in delivering this Resolution. With your support we will impact millions of children around the world who have been trafficked into orphanages.

This vital resolution was supported by the signatures of over 40,000 Hopeland supporters who signed our petition calling on the IPU to pass this resolution. Thank you so much for your support!

During the week-long debate on the resolution 30 nations spoke – all of whom were in support of this important action that will mean significant action will be taken by the IPU’s member states to end orphanage trafficking.

Addressing the committee, Senator Linda Reynolds of Western Australia, who introduced the Resolution, said “This is a comprehensive and practical resolution that is focused on supporting parliamentarians to take meaningful action to stop this form of child trafficking, through education, legislation and advocacy.”

“In this resolution,” she continued, “we have much to be proud of. In fact, we have 8 million reasons to be proud. That is because 8 million vulnerable children have been transferred into orphanages or residential care settings for the purpose of exploitation or profit.”

Now, thanks to the tireless work of Senator Reynolds and all of you who signed our petition – these children who have been exploited are one step closer to growing up in a safe, loving family.

“I am so proud to have witnessed the passage of this resolution because I know how important it will be for the millions of vulnerable children worldwide who have been trafficked into and out of orphanages worldwide,” said Nicholas Evans, Hopeland Co-Founder & CEO.
“I am also so thankful to every single person who signed our petition”, Evans continued, “by demanding change you put the pressure on members of the IPU to pass this Resolution and ensure every child can grow up in a safe, loving family.”

Orphanage Trafficking is the recruitment or transfer of children into orphanages, for the purpose of exploitation or profit. Orphanage traffickers prey upon children who are vulnerable to exploitation due to poverty, lack of access to education, and other causes. Children trafficked into orphanages may be subject to labor or sexual exploitation, servitude, or slaverylike practices, or harbored in orphanages to generate profit. It also results in the unnecessary separation of children from their families and exposes children to the devastatingly harmful developmental impacts associated with institutionalization.

It has also been shown that not only are children trafficked into orphanages – they have also been trafficked out of orphanages and into the sex trade and other exploitative practices. We must take action together to stop this.

We will continue to work with Senator Reynolds to keep the pressure on the IPU member states and to make sure they live up to their commitments to tackle orphanage trafficking and protect vulnerable children all over the world from this wicked practice.

Advocating for Children Globally

Hopeland’s Co-Founder and CEO, Nicholas Evans, was invited to London to speak at the Global Leader Summit on Human Trafficking.

This was a great opportunity for Nicholas to bring attention to orphanage trafficking in front of an international audience where 40 nations were represented by over 150 decision makers, including Members of Parliament from around the world.

After the event, Evans said, “I was delighted to have the opportunity to address this important gathering of global leaders. Taking action to prevent and end orphanage trafficking is so important. Today has been a key step in gathering support for our petition calling on the Inter-Parliamentary Union to put an end to this heinous practice immediately.”

Anne Basham, Founder and Chair of the Interparliamentary Taskforce on Human Trafficking celebrated the event and added “I was grateful for Nick’s leadership and insightful contributions at the Interparliamentary Taskforce on Human Trafficking Global Leader Summit in London. His ability to guide the discussion while providing subject matter expertise brought out the best from each panelist and added immense value.”

Keeping Children and Families In Focus

Hopeland focuses on action and advocacy.

Our work has a vital impact for children all over the world.

This is why we host multiple events every year to raise awareness of the fate of children around the world. This year we hosted a UNGA side event to promote the importance of all sectors uniting together to solve the issue of Orphanage

Trafficking. We shared our petition with the group as well as our spotlight in the Global Slavery Index. It was attended by leaders in business, politics, design, faith and other sectors. It is always inspiring to bring together people from different backgrounds to make a difference in the world.

ADVOCACY

“Too many children around the world are living in orphanages when they have loving families that are able to care for them. Hopeland are doing brilliant work helping children to grow up in families by busting some of the myths around orphanages. It was a privilege to partner with Hopeland during

the United Nations General Assembly. “

—Dr Krish Kandiah speaking after our UNGA side event. We ended the year with a celebration to thank our supporters in NYC for all the work we have achieved together. We would be nowhere without our friends and supporters!

We are excited to have joined the Transform Collective, funded by UBS Optimus Foundation, a global coalition of organizations working together to transform childcare for vulnerable families.

We are delighted to be a part of this group of organizations working hard together to change the world. Many of our upcoming events will be as part of the Transform Collective as we aim to better inform world leaders and others interested in improving the world for children .

The issue: more important than ever, how do we innovate?

Hopeland was founded to help the millions of children worldwide growing up separated from their families. When a child grows up away from a safe, loving home we know that it has a direct impact on their physical and mental development leaving them vulnerable to a wide range of negative outcomes in life.

So why focus on innovation - if the issue is so big surely any solution is worth it?

Today there are at least 25 million children living separated from parents by poverty, conflict, or other causes of separation. 5.4 million of these children are living in orphanages, and an incredible 333 million are at risk of separation.

There’s a simple answer, we’ve been doing things the old way for centuries and getting the same results - the number of children in orphanages has barely changed, the number of children living in extreme poverty has barely changed, the number of children engaged in child labor has even gone up!

We can’t do the same thing and expect better results, that’s why Hopeland is focused on delivering innovative solutions. Every program we support has to either connect people, organizations, or sectors that have historically not collaborated or be a new way of addressing an issue.

We are proud of our programs that change the lives of children and families and our advocacy work that calls for the global change they need. Together we can continue to make sure that one day soon every child will live in a safe, loving family.

Dear Hopeland Family,

As we publish the latest Annual Report, I am writing to thank you for your incredible support over the past year and to say how grateful I am and how committed I will continue to be in 2024.

As we lean into the coming year, we know the world is more unsettled and increasingly dangerous, and that vulnerable children will bear the brunt. I am hopeful however because of the difference Hopeland has already made and is positioned now more than ever to be an influential and impactful force to help vulnerable children well into the future.

We are excited about what’s possible for the children we support because of our commitment to innovation and best practice in this sector. Throughout my decades of business experience I have seen every day how you cannot simply keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. The world has failed children for too long with more than 5 million children living in awful conditions in orphanages, more than 25 million separated from their families, and another 330 million at risk of separation due to extreme poverty.

Your support has meant the world to us and has helped us deliver some incredible achievements this year. I am astounded by the impact of our work on Orphanage Trafficking. You, our supporters, joined us as over 40,000 of you signed our petition calling on the Inter- Parliamentary Union to finally take action to curb this wicked practice that profits from vulnerable children.

This campaign was a great example of how we prioritize collaboration over competition as we partnered with Senator Linda Reynolds and Global Citizen to deliver true positive impact for millions of children worldwide.

This is why we support new innovative programs like our roof shelter project with Medair in South Sudan. By supporting groundbreaking initiatives, we can work together to deliver real change for children. I can’t wait to see the impact we can have together in 2024.

Thank you again for your support of Hopeland. We truly couldn’t do what we do without you by our sides and it is so gratifying to see so much support for the children we seek to protect.

With my best regards,
