MENG JUNG HO Master of Architecture II

“

2018-2023

Southern California Institute of Architecture

[ STATEMENT ] Meng-Jung Ho is currently earned the Master of Architecture II degree at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Previously, she received a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from Feng Chia University. Shortly after, she worked as a project designer in the CHL Architect & Associate, a prestigious architectural firm in Taipei, Taiwan, and was primarily involved in residential housing and office buildings. As she constantly inputs time and energy into the discipline, she realized that the world ‘architecture’ has a much broader definition than she thought several years ago. It can be anything instead of the containers accommodating the flows of social actions. Thus, she has forayed into anthropology and visual arts, which is outside the field of architecture, to explore possibilities of architectural design.

To achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Company Bio, founded by the United Nations, aims to simulate a fungus that can find food in the shortest path between two points to collect excess carboon from the natural environment. The design method is chunk interation. Committed to promoting the integratioon of various functional blocks to connect human space and non-human space without barriers. The substantial spaces are mainly laboratories, research centers and exhibition hall, while void spaces are large

ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS Summary

Strategy

The solar radiation diagram represents that the radiation is mainly exposed in the South of the building throughout the average day. Most of the direct radiation can be found on the roof. The secondary region that receives sunlight is the East side of the site. It allows natural daylight into the space to reduce electric lighting and save energy. However, it may also produce excessive heat gains and losses, which increase the air-conditioning cooling or heating load. To avoid these problems, we have to consider the combined effect of daylight and energy.

The Low-E Glazing allow enough daylight inside the building and also helps block infrared light from penetrating the glass from the outside. In addition, Low E helps keep the heating/ cooling energy.

ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS Summary Average Wind Speed 4 m/s - 8 m/s The natural ventilation diagram shows that the prevailing wind comes from the West and WestSouth-West. This allows for naturally ventilated air to flow through the rooms. From the analysis, fenestration from the West and South elevation of the proposed design could be improved in order to benefit from the maximum natural ventilation possible. Also, the design could be structurally reinforced in preparation for the wind load applied during the windy season.

As time moved on, human civilization’s environment changed tremendously with their technology. Global warming and extreme climate make people put in all their effort to save their asses by developing AI technology.

earth, which ultimately turned it into a harsh environment that humans can’t survive. Because of reconstructing the environment, AI becomes the character to maintain the livable environment and climate suitable for humans to live.

2066 is the age of super-intelligent android (AI). Billions of machines span the world. Super-intelligent androids develop their mind and dominate the world. Since superior to humans in almost every aspect, AI brings enormous breakthroughs in technology and fixes most of the problems created by humans, such as the people’s damage to mother

In the end, it becomes a world of humans, and the androids’(AI) coexisted . Human’s commensalism relationship with their intellectually superior masters goes on for several generations.

“We Wear the Mask” is a lyrical poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar, about the lives of African Americans after the Civil War. The poet explains how the people had to pretend that everything is better and the mental torture they went through. The popularity of the poem lies in the fact that it reflects the miserable plight of African Americans forced to hide their painful realities and frustrations under the mask of happiness and contentment. In the poem, the mask is a metaphor for human duplicity and concealment. There is a suggestion

68

that the mask’s role in human life is inevitable. The mask is referred to as “this debt we pay to human guile,” indicating that the mask is inextricably connected to—and perhaps a product of—the human capacity for deceit and duplicity. The poet illustrates the effect of suffering endured by black people due to their race. As a result, they are compelled to learn the art of fake happiness. Not only did this art saves them from racial discrimination, but it also enables them to keep their real pain hidden from the world.

MASKED The masks we wear are a form of protection. We wear them to protect, not only ourselves, but people around us from our burdens. The helmet-style mask signifies the barrier of protection that we use in this manner. The helmet is made of two layers, a thinner under layer that is fragile to the dangers of the outside world. The thicker outer layer is a pretty flowery layer, meant to cover and protect the thinner layer of the mask. The mask we wear is easy for the eyes to digest; it's pretty and inviting. The snakes on the mask represent the intrusive thoughts we have sometimes, slithering to the back of our heads. The snakes are also a representation of other people's thought about us, infiltrating our minds. The hand on the mask, although pretty and decorative, is there to maintain silence among the mask-wearer. It's there as a preventative measure, to make sure the maskwearer's real feelings aren't accidentally spilled.

Terraforming or terraformation is the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying the atmosphere, temperature, surface topography, or ecology of a planet, moon, or other body to be similar to the environment of Earth to make it habitable by Earth-like life. As the final terrain to endure at the end of a lengthy journey, the beautifully familiar Violet Feel’ds tantalizes the exhausted and desperate hero with the feeling of comfort and delicious serenity. Before they prepare to meet with their most ferocious and vicious match, they lay their head on a

Challenging the smooth slickness of spline and polygon modeling of the 1990s and early 2000s, this project will operate within the current post-digital context, investigating ideas of precise and intentional unruliness, mixing rustication and delicacy, and how formal legibility is affected by layering, filtering, rips, wrinkles, peeling, and fuzz.

layered semi-opaque synthetic materials, murky reflections, and bundles of particles. At the same time, “overlaid” and “masked”, bring up issues of politics, postprocessing and applying filters to images and ideas.

It seems everything we do at the moment is overlaid, filtered and masked - once, twice or in many ways. Formally and texturally, “overlaid” elicits thoughts of many layers of fine detailed mesh, multi-
