The Electrification Revolution
Powering
a Sustainable Future
W
e care deeply about a more sustainable future. Innovation can certainly come from an individual moment of genius, but we also believe that collective intelligence (much like AI…)/decision-making is a fantastic indicator of what the best choice may really be. A democracy of science, if you will. To demonstrate the point: If 10,000 people estimated how many jellybeans were in a jar at a fairground, very few would guess correctly. The average, however, would likely be very precise. The world would appear – for now – to have chosen electrification of industry to be the best route forwards. Understanding this, we thought it would be prudent to begin issue 54 with a deeper dive into the topic. In an era where the world is grappling with the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, electrification has emerged as a key strategy in the quest for a more sustainable future. Electrification, the process of transitioning from fossil fuels to electricity as the primary source of power, holds the promise of reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and transforming various sectors of our economy. Here, we delve into the electrification revolution and its far-reaching implications for a cleaner, more sustainable world.

I FALL 2023
The Electrification Revolution
The drive towards electrification is rooted in the recognition that our current reliance on fossil fuels for energy is unsustainable. The burning of fossil fuels for electricity generation, transportation, and heating is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, which are the primary drivers of climate change. As a result, governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide are increasingly turning to electricity as a cleaner and more efficient alternative. Transport One of the most visible and impactful aspects of electrification is the transformation of the transportation sector. Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained tremendous popularity in recent years, thanks to advances in battery technology, improved charging infrastructure, and a growing awareness of environmental issues. EVs are not only quieter and smoother to drive, but they also produce zero tailpipe emissions. This makes them a vital tool in reducing air pollution and mitigating the effects of climate change. Major automakers are investing heavily in EV technology, with an ever-expanding range of electric cars and trucks hitting the market. Furthermore, the electrification of public transportation, such as buses and trains, is on the rise. Cities around the world are electrifying their public transit fleets to reduce pollution and improve urban air quality. Electric buses are not only more environmentally friendly but also quieter, contributing to a more pleasant urban environment. Buildings The electrification of buildings involves replacing traditional fossil fuel-based heating systems with electric alternatives, such as heat pumps and 8
electric furnaces. This shift is driven by the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the residential and commercial sectors, which account for a significant portion of global energy consumption. Heat pumps, in particular, are a game-changer in building electrification. They use electricity to move heat from one place to another, providing efficient heating and cooling. Heat pumps are highly versatile and can be used for space heating, water heating, and even dehumidification, making them a versatile and sustainable solution for various climate control needs. Additionally, smart building technologies, powered by electricity, are enhancing energy efficiency and reducing consumption. These technologies include advanced lighting systems, automated HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, and energy management systems that optimize energy usage based on real-time data. Industry itself The industrial sector is also experiencing a shift towards electrification, as businesses seek to decarbonize their operations. Electrifying industrial processes can significantly reduce emissions associated with manufacturing and production, making it an essential component of a sustainable future. Electrification in industry involves replacing fossil fuel-powered machinery with electric equipment and harnessing renewable energy sources like solar and wind to power these processes. This transition not only reduces carbon emissions but also enhances efficiency and lowers operating costs. In some cases, electrification is combined with innovations like green hydrogen production, where excess electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, creating a clean energy source for industrial processes and other applications.
FALL 2023 I EXECUTIVE INSIGHT MAGAZINE
The Benefits of Electrification The electrification revolution brings with it a multitude of benefits that extend beyond environmental considerations: 1. Reduced Carbon Emissions: Electrification helps cut greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change. This reduction in carbon emissions is particularly significant in sectors that are challenging to decarbonize, such as heavy industry and long-haul transportation. 2. Energy Efficiency: Electric technologies are often more energy-efficient than their fossil fuel counterparts. Electric motors, for example, can convert a higher percentage of energy into useful work, reducing waste and energy consumption. 3. Improved Air Quality: Electrifying transportation and buildings reduces harmful air pollutants, improving air quality in urban areas and reducing the health risks associated with air pollution. 4. Energy Independence: As renewable energy sources like solar and wind become more integrated into the grid, electrification can lead to greater energy independence by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. 5. Innovation and Economic Growth: The electrification revolution is driving innovation and economic growth. It has created a burgeoning market for electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and smart grid solutions, leading to job creation and economic opportunities. But…: Challenges and Considerations While electrification holds great promise, it also presents challenges and considerations: 1. Energy Storage: The intermittency of renewable energy sources like wind and solar requires advances in energy storage technologies, such as
better batteries, to ensure a reliable and resilient energy supply. 2. Grid Modernization: To accommodate increased electricity demand from electrification, power grids must be upgraded and modernized. This includes enhancing grid reliability, capacity, and flexibility. 3. Equity and Affordability: Policymakers and stakeholders must ensure that electrification benefits are accessible to all, addressing issues of equity and affordability in the transition. 4. Supply Chain Challenges: The production of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies relies on the availability of critical minerals and materials, which can pose supply chain challenges. In conclusion The electrification revolution is a pivotal moment in our journey toward a more sustainable future. It offers the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and transform key sectors of our economy. As the world faces the urgent need to combat climate change and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, electrification stands as a beacon of hope, offering a cleaner, more sustainable path forward. Embracing this revolution requires collaboration among governments, businesses, and individuals to drive innovation, improve infrastructure, and ensure an equitable transition to a brighter, electrified future. Companies in this issue have all done something special. In many ways, thanks to the collective thoughts of people like you who have helped shape the world. We all do. We hope you enjoy issue 53 and look forward to a fantastic final quarter! 9

Liebherr Solutions for the Mining Industry Mining operations require a variety of machines and special equipment to keep mines running efficiently, safely, and profitably. Liebherr has supported the mining industry for over 50 years through the design and manufacturing of advanced equipment solutions and by working closely with customers to provide options that add value and can be adapted to specific requirements. Quality, reliability and innovative technologies ensure that mining operations are not only safe but also time and cost-efficient at all times. A strong partner for the mining industry Liebherr offers a wide range of mining equipment and assistance systems designed to maximize the output of the operations, as well as a range of auxiliary cranes and components used to maintain and support critical infrastructure. Mining Trucks Hydraulic Excavator and Shovels Hydraulic Dozers Large Wheel Loaders Rotary Drill Rigs
Draglines Rough Terrain Cranes Tower Cranes Components: Slewing bearings, shock absorbers, engines or gearboxes
As each mine site presents a new set of challenges, both to the workforce and the equipment used on the site, Liebherr has adapted various product segments including mining, mobile cranes, tower cranes, and components to meet these evolving geographical and performance needs as demonstrated below. Mining Trucks, Excavators and Dozers in Mining Liebherr offers a full range of digging, hauling, and dozing equipment for the mining industry. These machines include excavators ranging from 100 t – 800 t, haul trucks configured for payloads of up to 375 t, and hydrostatic dozers up to 70 t. Customers can expect high levels of performance, power, and efficiency from each machine as well as spec options that add value and can be adapted to the site-specific requirements. Zero emission mining Not only does Liebherr offer a wide variety of equipment for the mining industry, but as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Liebherr takes its environmental responsibilities incredibly seriously. Liebherr has an energy and powertrain agnostic approach to decarbonizing mining equipment to help as many customers along their emissions reduction journey as possible. When customers couple Liebherr’s electric mining excavators with renewable electricity sources, these machines can become a zero-emission solution on site. For mining trucks, Liebherr offers trolley solutions – a system that powers diesel-electric trucks by connecting them to overhead electric powerlines. When trucks are operating under trolley, they can achieve higher speed on grade and faster acceleration which can in turn lead to increased productivity, decreased energy costs per ton, and a reduced carbon footprint of the mine. Further, Liebherr is working with industry partners to integrate battery technology into mining trucks, offering a zero-emission solution. Liebherr is also working on providing engines that will run on renewable fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen. At present, Liebherr’s engines can already use hydrotreated vegetable oil as a low emission alternative to diesel. Liebherr also offers technology such as Liebherr Power Efficiency, a proprietary engine and hydraulic management system, that allows customers to significantly reduce emissions without major mine infrastructure changes. Tower cranes in mining Another adaptation developed and implemented by Liebherr includes the use of tower cranes in mining applications as the most effective solution for building and maintaining open pit mines. The advantage of Liebherr’s tower cranes is that the crane covers two cycles with one machine. First, it is installed to build an industrial structure, e.g. flotation cells, and then stays at least 30+ years in place to do the maintenance work on these cells. This concept has proven to be an economical alternative in regards to monthly operational costs, low energy, spare parts consumption, and long-term safe, reliable and emission-free operation. In most cases the mine sites are also located in harsh environments with extreme temperature fluctuations, sand storms, high altitudes, and earthquake zones. Liebherr tower cranes are adapted to perform in wind speeds up to 20m/sec and are designed to withstand earthquakes with a 30-40-year life cycle. Today, Liebherr tower cranes are successfully operating in several open-pit mines throughout the Americas including continuous tower crane service for TECK in the Quebrada Blanca mine. Liebherr is confident in repeating this success with additional tower cranes in the upcoming Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 project extension with TECK. Rough Terrain cranes in mining Liebherr rough terrain mobile cranes are also used in mining applications due to their easy transport, maneuverability, and standard safety features. The LRT 1130-2.1 mobile crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 130 t (140 USt) and was designed for high performance on rocky terrain, economical transport, and safe crane operation. The crane features very high lifting capacities and the longest telescopic boom of any 2-axle rough terrain crane in the world. The mobile crane has the most economical transport dimensions of its class and can be transported on conventional low loaders anywhere in the world, as well as easily maneuver on rocky terrain within a quarry. High safety levels were the main priority for the design of the new LRT 1130-2.1, which features such a standard outrigger monitoring system. The outrigger status, on tires or supports, is detected automatically and saved to the crane controller. The attachment of the ballast to the slewing platform and the installation of the optional double folding jib, including its angle adjustment system, are also recorded and monitored. Components for the mining industry Liebherr strives to meet the high expectations of customers by providing exceptional service and high-quality customer support as well as aftermarket sales and service of spare parts. Liebherr develops and manufactures resilient components with high availability for deployment in surface mining and deep mining. Work in stone quarries and pits is usually performed with very large machines that require particularly powerful and resilient components, whereas equipment used in mines typically requires machines with compact dimensions. In this case, Liebherr components withstand dust and dirt as well as extreme temperatures. At the same time, Liebherr components comply with the strict safety regulations that apply to deep mining. In Chile, the company currently has operations in Quebrada Blanca (QB) and Carmen de Andacollo (CDA) but its prime high-quality asset is the development at Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 (QB2), Teck’s flagship copper growth project. With the completion of QB2, Teck will double its consolidated copper production and has the potential to become one of the top 10 copper producers in the world. The QB2 project is one of the largest undeveloped copper resources in the world. QB2 has an initial mine life of 27 years with significant potential for future growth. The project incorporates extensive environmental measures, including the first large-scale use of desalinated seawater for mining in Chile’s Tarapacá Region and stringent protection of flora and fauna in the Andes. Teck holds a direct 60% interest in Quebrada Blanca, while Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. And Sumitomo Corporation together have a collective 30% indirect interest in the mine, and ENAMI, a Chilean state agency, has a 10% non-funding interest. The Quebrada Blanca mine is located in the Tarapacá Region of northern Chile at an elevation of 4,400 metres, approximately 240 kilometres south-east of the city of Iquique and 1,800 kilometres from Santiago. Quebrada Blanca is currently an open pit operation, which leaches the ore to produce copper cathodes via processing in an SX-EW plant. Copper cathode is trucked to Iquique for shipment to purchasers. Some mine personnel live in
a camp facility, with the majority commuting from large population centres, including Iquique, Concepción, Arica, and Santiago. Teck sanctioned the start of construction for QB2 in late 2018 and since then has faced and successfully handled numerous challenges to move the project into production in 2023. Committed to succeed Varinia Aranguren who has been in QB2 since early 2019, was personally involved in making sure that the project withstands the challenges of both the global pandemic and local specifics. “It is important to mention that no owner in Chile has ever built a project the size of QB2 including all its infrastructure, i.e., a desalination plant, 154 kms. of water and concentrate pipelines from the coast all the way up to the Andes, high voltage powerlines, a tailings management facility, a concentrator, and other major infrastructure, all at once. Teck decided to move forward with the construction, as part of the company strategy to significantly increase its copper production given the metal’s critical role in the low-carbon transition. A highly successful and driven executive with extensive international experience in commercial, contracting, materials management, and procurement strategic planning, development, execution, and delivery of multi-billion mining megaprojects in Canada, Chile, Peru, Australia, Russia, Dominican Republic, amongst others. me to be creative in solving problems in a way that would move the project forward.” Challenge turned opportunity Having moved to Vancouver in 2010, joining Teck in 2016 was a natural move, she stated. In 2019, a year before the pandemic, Varinia was seconded to QB2 in Chile, put in charge of contracts and procurement, accountable for all the contracting, purchasing and material management, traffic logistics, importing, as well as warehousing across the multiple sites. The global pandemic was challenging for
the mining industry, among others. “The virus clearly brought challenges of a different nature and magnitude. In 2020, we had 15,000 workers hired at the site and social distancing was difficult. We had to reduce the workforce down to maintain critical services, but with the aim of retaining most of the employees and contractors previously engaged. We developed robust COVID management protocols to protect employee health and safety while at the same being able to safely ramp up the workforce once it was safe to do so.” There was another
challenge that Varinia managed to handle extremely well during the pandemic, a challenge on a personal level. Before moving to Chile, she had undergone the process of enrolling herself in a very demanding Executive MBA program with the Queen’s University in Canada and Cornell University in the US. “My fear was that I would not be able to finish the courses because of the type of intense work I was doing. Still, despite all the difficult times, I managed to complete the program during the Covid-19 pandemic with support from colleagues,
friends, and family. Another achievement I am personally very proud of.” Social and environmental policies Post-pandemic, Teck has continued to drive the completion of the QB2 project, with a peak of 14,000 people working on site, per shift. But it is not all about progression and profits, says Varinia. The company stays true to its reputation as a responsible employer, with sustainability and environmental protection high on the company’s agenda. Last year, Teck was named among global 100 most sustainable corporations for the

fifth consecutive year and was the first mining company globally to set a goal of becoming nature positive. “For Teck, working to become nature-positive means that by 2030, our conservation, protection and restoration of land and biodiversity will exceed the disturbance caused by our mining activities from a 2020 baseline.” The company announced that some 5,800 ha of a unique and high-value wetland ecosystem near Teck’s Quebrada Blanca Operations will be protected in partnership with the Ollagüe Quechua community. The initiative is the first of its kind in Chile. QB2 project had a peak of 33,000 people working during its manufacturing and construction phases alone and will create quite a large number of permanent jobs once in production. Now that we’re ramping down, the expectation remains that Quebrada Blanca operations will be creating some 3500 permanent direct and undirect jobs in the industry.” “Teck´s Social Management and HR teams have also implemented a number of programmes and projects with our communities, such as the ‘Choose to Grow’ plan, aimed at empowering talent within the area to train 22

them and attract them to work for us.” Furthermore, the operations team has recently reached 28% of female employees. Ramping up to production Summarising her 7 years working for the company, Varinia affirms that she feels very proud to belong to Teck and super proud to be part of the QB2 project. “I’m also very proud of the team that I basically built from scratch. They have been really hard-working, achieving excellent results, and we are creating wonderful career opportunities for them in our copper pipeline of projects.” She further pointed out that Chile is a very special place in terms of human resources, with its skills in mining. “Very few people realise for just how many years Chile has been building mine sites. Chile is one of the countries with a long history in copper mining, one that started in 1870. Obviously, the pool of professionals in this field is huge and highly qualified. On the other hand, we are not the only company mining here, and our peers in the industry are numerous. We have, of course, locals working in QB2 but our teams are very diverse, with a lot of other nationalities as well.” Going forward, she reflected that Teck has an industry-leading corporate copper growth pipeline of unrivalled suite of growth projects, not only in Chile, but also in other well-established mining countries around the world where the company is working. “In terms of QB2, the expectation is that we will be fully ramped up this year. “QB2 really takes us to the next level. It is a deposit that has the potential for future growth for generations.” In concluding, she emphasises that the credit for the construction of this mega-project goes to the people, who work tirelessly on shift at 4,400 metres above sea level (and some 50m underwater). “Our workers deserve all credit and in terms of dedication we respect each and every one of them. Working remotely on shift, away from their families, they have been absolutely amazing, making the QB2 project a global success.” 26

TECO 2030 has been active in several areas, including emission reduction systems such as exhaust gas cleaning systems for ships, but its biggest focus is currently on developing hydrogen fuel cells, a breakthrough technology for the shipping industry. Fuel cells generate electricity through a mechanism that doesn’t require combustion. 31

This means they produce fewer pollutants than conventional, combustion-based power generation technologies. In addition, they are also highly efficient, producing more power per unit of fuel when comparing them to

fossil fuels. As such, they offer an alternative to traditional power generation with significant health, reliability, and environmental benefits. Right now, TECO 2030 is in the process of building Europe’s first giga factory for hydro-
gen proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel-cell stacks and modules at its Innovation Centre in Narvik in northern Norway. The production capacity will be built up through 2023 and early 2024, targeting an output capacity of up to 120 MW
of fuel cells in 2024, 400 MW in 2025 and 1.6 GW in 2030. Into production In May 2023 TECO 2030 achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the first manual production of hydrogen fuel-cell

stacks. Tore Enger affirms that the ambitious project has progressed according to plan. “We spent a lot of time immaculately planning all aspects of the project. Completing this stage is a major achievement, attributable to all our employees, experienced in both the fuel-cell development and production.” “I am grateful for what the team has achieved together with our strong partners. Today we can offer the first bottom-up developed marine and heavy-duty PEM fuel-cell technology. This brings us one step closer to cleaner operations in energy-intensive industries such as marine shipping, and mobile and stationary heavy-duty applications with a scalable plug and play solution from 400kWs and upwards.” He explained that work on completing the production facility, which should be up and running 34

next summer, is in full swing. TECO 2030 has chosen leading global companies to supply the equipment as well as participate in the design and development, such as thyssenkrupp, which is now installing the production line; and AVL, a forerunner in hydrogen powertrain application development, which will validate the stack technology for heavy-duty applications. “We wanted to have the best of the best working together, to create the best product with minimum risk,” he affirms. Pioneering technology Mr Enger explains that the projects TECO 2030 is implementing reflect the changes in industry in general and address both landbased and offshore needs for clean, renewable energy. The first TECO 2030 fuel-cell stacks to be deployed include the 800kW HydroPilot
container set to be in operation at the end of 2023. Hydropilot, a fuel-cell power generator, has been designed to provide a zero-emission power supply at construction sites. The HydroPilot container is funded by the Norwegian-state owned funding company ENOVA SF with approx. EUR 1.5 million. Following the production of the container, TECO 2030’s Narvik team will start the production of the fuel-cell stacks for the EU-funded Horizon Europe HyEkoTank project. HyEkoTank will demonstrate the world’s first and largest 2.4 MW marine fuel-cell system for a retrofit installation onboard a product tanker owned by Tarbit Shipping AB sailing on charter to a Shell plc subsidiary. “We are thrilled to continue to showcase how hydrogen can contribute to the reduction of harmful emissions within the marine
industry. This project has the potential to enable seaborne transport without any emissions,” says Mr Enger. “Our fuel cells are the first purpose-developed marine fuel cells, with an industry-leading footprint and without compromising efficiency.” The technology has attracted considerable interest in other sectors, as indicated by the latest Memorandum of Understanding signed in August 2023 with a European motor company, interested in the FCM400 modules for their development of an integrated skid/ containerized fuel-cell system for their market segments. The agreement also includes utilizing the FCM400 module within their ongoing projects to ensure a solid partnership and collaboration platform in the years to come. For future generations “Everything is changing, everyone is looking

These developments have a profound impact across industries and the whole supply chain is moving in a new direction. We have 200 suppliers in our value chain, all of them lined up to work with us in the years to come. The suppliers will be an integral part of our growth, as this emerging industry opens many new opportunities.”
Mr Enger does not hide his passion for the environment and the green transition, specifically in the marine industry that continues to be a significant polluter. “For us, sustainability and efficient use of marine technology are at the heart of everything we do. There is a growing demand in the industry for green marine technology; providing sustainable high-quality
products to the market is the main goal for TECO 2030.” He points out that in the coming months the company will focus on completing its production facility in Narvik, as well as working with clients, pushing for increased demand. “We will strive to continue to have strong relationships with all our stakeholders – our dedicated and committed work force and
our partners.” “We can see many projects coming up in the fuel-cell space, many are already active and there are more to come. As a company, we are proud to participate in changing the world. Hopefully in 20 years’ time we can sit and relax, and say that we did something good for the generations to come,” he reflects in concluding. 35

accomplished at just the right time, at the onset of the global pandemic. “Although we were still in the middle of learning to work under a new system, it was a great help as many of our people were able to work from home and business continued.” “Now we are installing a new CRM system that integrates perfectly with Cloud Suite, our ERP system. We’ll never walk away from a customer – if they are not happy with something we’ll never walk away until they are fully satisfied.” Responsible business He reflects that any investment is done with a view to further promoting the idea of a responsible business. “We don’t manufacture anything, so we don’t have a negative environmental footprint from operations. As far as the recycling portion of our activity is concerned, we do it diligently – we recycle all cardboard and pallets and even plastics and batteries are now being handled through certified recycling specialists.” Jorge Smith affirms that going forward, the com44

And we are adding another engineer/ technician to the team to further improve the technical support,” he says, adding that Silmar is also aware of its wider, social role for the community and supports a facility for lone children and one of the Miami shelters for the homeless. In concluding, he reflects that over the decades of its existence, Silmar has differentiated itself from other distributors by going beyond what other wholesalers typically provide, able to provide teams with resources such as technical training and complete system support, whether they are looking for full integrated solutions or specific products. He will make sure that this commitment, embedded into the company’s approach since 1963, continues. “I’ve stepped back some, allowing Carlos and the leadership team to run the day-to-day operations and develop plans on future direction. When at home, I still go to the company each morning, speak with the staff, primarily those on the leadership committee - they mostly bounce thoughts and ideas they may have and it’s important we all stay informed. Silmar is still my passion, I enjoy going to work. And I will for the foreseeable future.”
From the Employees... Marcel Van Brackel – Intl General Manager I started with the company in 2006 as an engineer for everything related to Internet Protocol or IP. From the very getgo, the company has let me do things my way without ever trying to micromanage how I went about doing my job. This is something that has really helped me grow into the job and make it my own. As someone who moved here from Colombia, I received a lot of support from Silmar to help me settle into my new life here in the U.S. Jorge is an amazingly supportive boss and he treats everyone with respect. My relationship with him is not just related to work, he has given me a lot of advice about many different aspects of life, and even helped me out during the housing crisis. Jorge is also just so fun to talk to, because he knows a lot about so many different things. It reminds me a lot about Colombia, where it’s very common to discuss a lot of historical and political and other different issues with your friends and family. Since Carlos started with the company, he has brought a lot of fresh ideas into the company, and he has a very different way of doing things, which I think is great. Both he and Jorge are extremely considerate people, and go out of their way to understand and help us on a human level. It’s because of this that I have always felt that working at Silmar is like working for your family and that’s why every year on the anniversary of me joining Silmar, I go up to Jorge and thank him for letting me be a part of this. Janet Duenas – Assistant Sales Manager My story with Silmar begins in the year 1986. I was working for a manufacturer that Silmar now distributes. A sudden opportunity came about and looking back, I am so glad I took this opportunity. Jorge took a lot of time to train me regarding the right values with how to approach the job. Over the years I have seen Silmar grow from one store to the 9 stores and 1 international hub that we now have. So, I have seen the whole journey. My time here has taught me that you are constantly learning, given technology changes all the time so you are learning something new about the products all the time. All these years later, I still love this business because Jorge and the family have created a family environment that makes it easy for people to stay on for so long. It’s no surprise that more than half the people have been here for 10 years or longer. You are not just a cog in the machine here, you are treated like an extremely valued member of the people, and that’s because Jorge has been a very fair person. Carlos is also following suit, always team-oriented, always promoting the family culture. I don’t think you see a work culture like that in most places. Watching the growth of the company has been fantastic, at the beginning I handled a lot of the international customers myself until the company grew to the point that we added an international division entirely. Throughout this whole period, Jorge has been an extremely fair, even keel person and Carlos has taken after that as well. This has translated onto all of the staff, and as a result everyone makes everyone else feel valued, and you really enjoy coming to work. I also had the privilege of meeting Jorge’s mom, and she was an inspirational lady, so I know where these values come from. Moving forward, I plan to stick around with Silmar for as long as possible. I was very young when I joined, and I have gotten to grow with the company. It has been a great experience. Vince Henderson - Sales Associate I started with Silmar in 1991 but even before that I knew Jorge, because I lived in Miami and bought equipment from him when he worked the counter. Since then, I have worked in a number of branches and worked in different roles, including managerial ones at different branches, so this company means a lot to me. Even when I was sick for a prolonged period, Silmar took care of me and stood by my side. I’m not even the only person they have helped, they have helped so many people with so many different problems. It is really a family, and I am thankful to God for giving me a chance to work here for so long. It has always been a learning experience, especially when we were building new branches. I got to be very involved when we set up branches in places like Clearwater and Jacksonville. It really has been a family ethos and much like a family, when there is a problem, everyone jumps in to help solve it and get it done. The family environment also fosters a certain sense of confidence. I remember in the early days when Janet taught me a lot about certain products, and this was at a time when women participated in the trades in much lower numbers. So, the company has always been ahead of its time and created an environment that lets everyone shine.

Sunna, who was born and bred in Iceland and has worked in operational roles since she completed her studies, moving to her current role at HS Orka three years ago, noted that HS Orka started to participate in the energy transition very early on, ahead of others, and continues to push for greater progress. The company can well be proud of its achievements during 2022, the best-ever year in the company’s history in terms of performance and financial results. Following immaculate planning and well-prepared and closely managed implementation, the expansion of the Reykjanes power station was successfully completed – a task achieved during the global pandemic with all its restrictions. Construction started at the beginning of 2021 and the facility was completed within budget, and ahead of schedule. Globally unique The project is unique globally in the sense that instead of drilling new boreholes, HS Orka, in collaboration with other Icelandic experts, has developed a new way to further utilise the resource, relying on capturing the waste heat from the power plant. As such,
the environmental impact of the project is almost zero, since the concept is to make full use of the energy and fluids that are already being extracted from the ground. Sunna Björg Helgadóttir who led the project throughout the preparation, construction and commissioning phase, recalls: “ We started in the middle of a pandemic, and while the pandemic itself didn’t significantly affect the construction, Covid and the war in Ukraine, as well as harsh weather caused delays in the supply chain and created challenges, which however were managed and controlled.” She highlighted the aspects that have contributed to successful project completion: “We had a strong and experienced project team, experts in every position, the planning process and preparations were good, as well as the risk management. Good communication and collaboration between the project team and key contractors was also crucial.” Yngvi Gudmundsson, her colleague and Chief Engineer at HS Orka, adds that the highly proactive approach also made a difference: “We didn’t rely on what the contractors promised, we actively 51

made them deliver; we cooperated with them to make sure all went as planned. Good relationships are key and we were lucky in selecting the right suppliers.” The benefit of the expansion is not only in making use of previously underutilised streams but also in increased output to meet the high demand for renewable energy in Iceland. The next in line Sunna explains that a proactive approach is not new to HS Orka: “Iceland has been leading the energy transition not only because we have this resource but also because of people who are used to thinking outside the box. This mindset is also reflected in our company culture.” As in the global field of energy utilisation, greater emphasis is now being put on solutions to make better use of power from the resources that are already being harnessed, new options are being investigated. To this end, HS Orka has already started its next major project – increasing the capacity and utilisation of the resource in its second facility, Svartsengi, a project similar in size to the expansion of the Reykjanes power plant. 52
The expansion of Svartsengi will increase the power plant’s total output from 75 MW to 85 MW, and involve the installation of new turbines that will replace several older pieces of equipment. “Svartsengi is a very promising project that is now in the procurement prepa-
ration phase, with negotiations taking place with key contractors,” explained Yngvi. “We will be installing newer, larger, more efficient equipment, which will help optimise production and make use of steam that would be wasted due to the limitations of the old technology.”
Society without a waste It is not only energy and heat production that is the sole focus of the company. HS Orka has a wider role in the community. Innovation and multi-use of resources are in the ethos of HS Orka’s operations and are the basis of the Resource Park that the company

Built around HS Orka’s geothermal power plants, the Resource Park is a leading cluster for green and sustainable businesses, benefiting from the electricity generated as well as from by-products of the geothermal process, including water, heat, geothermal fluids and gases. So far, the Resource Park has attracted industries including biotechnology, agriculture, leisure and tourism, generating investment and creating new employment in Iceland. Through the Resource Park, HS Orka aims to create a “society without waste”. More recently, the company has started to offer charging stations for cars. Within the Resource Park, projects related to the production of e-fuel are being developed, revolving around the utilisation of carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released from the company’s geothermal power plants. There are currently 11 businesses in the Resource Park, all of which began as small start-ups and all have grown rapidly since, affirmed Sunna, and the view is to gradually establish a circular
economy where no resource is wasted. Serving homes and industries The company has ambitious plans for the future and is set to continue to invest in its assets, focusing on further expansion of its generation capabilities. “In addition to expanding Svartsengi, we have several other projects in the pipeline regarding both hydro- and thermo-power generation as well as enhancing partnerships within the Resource Park. We are also investigating wind power.” Speaking about her personal goals for the future, Sunna reflects that she will continue to focus on doing a good job to help the company and its people prosper. “I love working in the energy sector and I believe we have an extremely good team here at HS Orka. I look forward to working with the team on our upcoming projects, moving the company forward.” This will be in line with HS Orka’s mission to serve homes and industries through the multiple and sustainable utilisation of resources for the generation of energy and other products for the benefit of customers, society and the company. 53

Íslensk verkmiðlun For the past 10 years, Íslensk verkmiðlun ehf. has been the one-stop shop for all the recruitment needs of contractors doing business in Iceland. The Iceland-based company has offices in Norway, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, which allows it to tap into a huge pool of qualified skilled and unskilled laborers that are willing to travel for assignments all over Europe. During its time of operation, Íslensk verkmiðlun has been involved with numerous undertakings in Iceland – ranging from the construction of a hydro/geothermal power plant in Þeistareikir, to turbine related projects for HD. The foundations of Íslensk verkmiðlun were constructed during a time of extreme economic hard-
ship in Iceland. In 2008, when the subprime mortgage crisis rocked the financial world. But every cloud has a silver lining. The devaluation of the Icelandic krona led to a dramatic increase in tourism in Iceland, that in return strengthened the economy and the construction business went into overdrive. Consequently, construction and production companies found it hard or impossible to hire local talent. It was at this point that Íslensk verkmiðlun was founded, drawing upon years of experience from its owners in the construction market, a strong international network of professionals, and a desire to always do better and go the extra mile for its clients.
The new shareholder’s vision was to acquire more companies to be consolidated under a single hat, which would permit a raising of technical standards – as a result, a strong business emerged that started to operate under the name of HD. HD today offers a wide range of products and services including technical condition analysis of machines and continuous monitoring of hardware, design, production and service of pump and piping systems, maintenance of natural steam turbines and generators of power plants, as well as importing mechanical

I need to motivate my team members to do great work foundation for further growth.” HD is not only a leading industrial service company in Iceland that has established a strong position within all of the nation’s basic industries; it is also a sought-after workplace for well-educated experts and craftsmen. “Today we have well over 200 employees and the most important part of my role as a CEO is that of a motivator, communicator, and uniter,” reflects Árni. “I need to motivate my team members to do great work; clearly and consistently communicate expectations and the organisation’s cultural norms to them; and unite them with a shared sense of purpose to achieve the vision that has been laid out to all employees. We have a very flat structure in HD and all communication channels are very short. I have a lot of contact with most of the employees and they have good access to me.” Trust and honesty The company is set to further reinforce 60
its position in Iceland. Last year HD started with the innovation of one of its facilities serving the green energy and environmental industries, with a focus on rebuilding steam turbine rotors. “This was a considerable investment that has been extremely successful, and the service is now fully booked until 2025,” says Árni. “As I mentioned before, we are also building a sixth establishment in the vicinity of one of the Rio Tinto aluminium smelters in Iceland, where we have high hopes of being able to further improve our service to that particular customer.” He affirms that HD is working towards sustainability and monitors consumption of water, oil and electricity as well as staff travel, and aims to decrease the CO2 emissions from its operations. “Project management takes sustainability into account in all decision-making regarding the selection of sub-contractors,
materials and equipment. We have a code of conduct in place for all subcontractors, reflecting the UN Global Compact principles.” Speaking about business relationships, he points out that almost all of HD’s operations are based on longterm partnerships with customers and suppliers. “In these relationships, we don’t think about quick profits, but about building a relationship based on trust and honesty. We define ourselves as a service company and put a lot of effort into working according to our values ‘Safety – Honesty – Service and Professionalism’. As such, our client base includes most of the major players in Icelandic industry.” Focus on internal growth Following the consolidation of the business over the last two years, HD’s focus today is on internal growth and further service improvement, in line with both customers’ and employees’ interests and expectations. “We have started to imple-
ment a CRM system, and are set to analyse the level of our customers’ satisfaction. We also have regular job satisfaction surveys among employees to find out where we can further improve internally. Last year, we experienced strong internal growth that now continues – this year to-date HD has grown internally by 20%.” Although HD is the largest service company in Iceland in the metal and machine industry with a substantial market share, it has not been spared the challenge of labour shortages. “Iceland has a very tight labour market with a lot of competition for human resources, so ensuring a good working environment has been one of our priorities.” An enjoyable workplace and interesting projects will surely be a sound basis for ensuring sufficient human capacity to proceed towards HD’s goal – to be the first choice of customers as a nationwide service provider in hardware, technical services and steel fabrication.

to rapidly increase total ore sales from current levels of approximately 3.5 million tonnes per year to a targeted 10 million tonnes per year which is expected to be achieved by the end of 2023. In addition to business growth, Nickel Industries has become a showpiece for sustainable and responsible mining in Indonesia. In 2022, the Hengjaya Mine was awarded a Green PROPER rating by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, becoming the sole mining entity from Central Sulawesi Province to achieve this rank and one of the only two nickel companies nationally to earn this accolade in 2022. The company is also the only nickel company to receive 7 trophies at the Environmental and Social innovation awards; earning a silver award at the Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating. “We are very proud of these awards and are now striving to achieve the gold rating. Our sustainability efforts have been reflected in the interest of numerous EV and battery makers that have come to Indonesia looking for environmentally responsible companies.” In this context, Justin explains that more than 50% of global nickel production last year took place in Indonesia. By the end of this year, the figure is forecast to rise to around 75%. Nickel Industries operations thus have a significant impact on the local economy. “In the last months

we have commissioned more rotary kiln electric furnaces at the Oracle Nickel and Ranger Nickel facility, adding another 3,000 to our workforce. So we continue to grow, and continue to expand and increase our footprint in the local community.” Staying at the forefront In concluding, Justin emphasises that over a very short period of time, Nickel Industries has grown into a global top 10 nickel producer, and is now moving into the top five. “We will be the only truly diversified company in the sector, and our ESG record and rating continues to improve.” The recent developments have opened the door for NIC to materially expand its battery nickel strategy and lay the foundation for it to become the only producer of a diversified range of nickel products, including low carbon intensity Mixed Hydroxide Product. “The diversification of the company has been the biggest achievement of the last 12 months. From historical production of Class 2 nickel mainly for the Chinese market, we have moved to becoming a producer of Class 1 nickel, meaning higher margins, lower carbon intensity, and a more diversified customer base. The company was founded in 2011 by Phil Marsh, the company President and Chief Technology Officer, a former Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and the inventor of BC Biocarbon’s core intellectual property. He was passionate about pyrolysis,
the process of heating an organic material, such as biomass, in the absence of oxygen, resulting in biological charcoal (biochar), a charcoal-like material that is safe to be re-used in a variety of climate-positive ways. This includes land and
water treatment, and helping soils to retain nutrients and water. Biochar is an effective method of sequestering carbon and storing it for centuries, driving meaningful CO2 reductions critical in the fight against climate change. Two business models
In 2018, the company developed its first continuous-flow production unit designed to operate at a processing rate of one metric tonne of biomass per hour and with a conversion ratio of four tonnes of biomass to one tonne of biochar. 75
Our initial focus was on producing biocoal out of residuals
FALL 2023 I EXECUTIVE INSIGHT MAGAZINE
Through its patented process, the company combines a substance called “glassy tar” with biochar and then presses it into a high-quality bio-coal that is waterproof and can be easily transported by train, a major advantage. The process is completely auto thermal - the bulk of the energy for the process comes from the biomass, which is backed by Puro. earth certification. Peter Popplewell explains that the company has further refined the IP. “Our initial focus was on producing bio-coal out of residuals — any hydrocarbon that can be obtained from municipal solid waste, garbage wood, crop and lumber residuals, etc, but we also process, decant, and distil the condensate (the gases released through pyrolysis) into creosote oils or chemical compounds such as wood vinegar, which can be used as a biostimulant, dedusting agent and de-icer.”
77

I FALL 2023
He reflects that as carbon markets have evolved, biochar has actually become more valuable and more in demand for agricultural use than bio-coal. “If a company uses biochar in an application that goes into the ground, it is eligible for carbon credits. At this point, the company really took on a new direction and focused on making biochar for horticulture and agricultural uses and carbon credits under the certification of Puro.earth.” The biorefinery Peter Popplewell, who joined BC Biocarbon in 2022, has a true passion for the business. With a PhD in electrical engineering and a long career in the electronics industry, he was attracted to BC Biocarbon by its climate change impact, and fascinated by the potential of biochar and its dual purpose as both a removal and as a highly useful output product benefiting multiple downstream industries. “I want to tell my grandchildren that I tried to apply my skills where it could help to address climate change,” he says. Needless to say, the potential is huge. The company has recently set up a joint venture with Dunkley Lumber, one of Canada’s largest private lumber companies, under which a 78
new bio refinery will be constructed in northern Saskatchewan. The biorefinery will utilize BC Biocarbon’s proprietary processes to convert residual biomass from forest operations into four initial products: biochar, bio-oil, wood vinegar and pyrolysis gas. These materials can be further refined into value-added products such as soil additives, filtration media, electrodes and speciality chemicals. The clean wood-residue biochar is always produced at high temperature, ranging from 600 to 800 °C. This ensures very low bio-oil residues and makes the organic biochar highly stable, and excellent for long-term carbon removal. Screens supplied by South African company Debmar are used for screening the input materials, while USbased BE&E provides screens for the biochar, sorting it into different particle sizes to suit different needs. The 2-6 mm particle sizes are for gardening and horticulture applications, and those smaller than 6 mm are recommended for water filtration applications. Because biochar is used as a soil amendment rather than combusted like bio-coal, this process also allows the generation of carbon credits. “The target capacity of the bio refinery is ten tonnes an hour, taking wood resid-

uals right on the site of one of the lumber mills, further saving carbon footprint by eliminating transportation. Our plan is to expand our processing rate from two and a half tonnes to ten tonnes of biomass per hour by 2025.” The potential “We have pre-sold the first five years’ worth of carbon credits to come from the first of four lines that are being installed in the Saskatchewan facility,” says Peter, pointing out that the company has now been approached by other
players, and not only lumber companies. “We can really carbonise just about any hydrocarbon such as municipal solid waste, landfill diverted, construction debris and similar. The process can be applied to any type of material as long as the moisture content is around 15% but even that is under our control. We have designed a special drying unit for the Saskatchewan facility to reduce the moisture of the wood residues.” Peter Popplewell states that in line with increasing demand
the company is set to double its employee headcount next year to be able to take on several projects in parallel. “Our strategy for the time being is to grow within partnerships like the one we set up with Dunkley Lumber.” “While we are building the Saskatchewan installation right now, which is focused on biochar and carbon credits, we are in discussions with different players, such as municipalities, about the ability to leverage our technology to make bio-coal out of
municipal solid waste, which can be used in the cement and steel industries, which both have significant carbon footprints, and need bio-coal to decarbonize quickly.” He affirms that while biochar used for agricultural purposes is currently more lucrative, the company will also stay focused on its original mission to produce bio-coal, as pressure to decarbonise heavy industries increases. In any event, BC Biocarbon’s potential is clearly promising and its future development will be fascinating. 79

The company has a strong commitment to investing in projects that help mitigate climate change and that support the UN’s sustainability goals. It has a project portfolio in Norway and Sweden at various development phases, with plans for an installed capacity of 2,000 MWp by the end of 2030. Collaborative model Speaking about the company’s beginnings, Managing Director Kristin Melsnes explains that the owners, who had experience in photovoltaic plants
in the southern part in Europe, decided a few years ago that the time had come to apply that experience in the Nordics. In 2020 Solgrid was established with just 3 people, Melsnes being one of them. With 20 years of executive experience from high-competence and technology-based environments, including as a board member of various companies within the power and renewable energy, telecommunications and other technology industries, she was the right person to lead the company forward.
“I believe in solar power. Right now, there is a massive gap between supply and demand for energy and much more must be invested in renewables,” she affirms, adding that Solgrid’s fundamental belief is that energy and natural values can coexist, which is why the company offers a collaborative model. Its approach to projects is to create energy for society, while at the same time giving municipalities and landowners added value. The typical area that the solar power company is looking for is so-
called ‘grey land’, i.e. barren soil with poor growing conditions of 150 to 200 hectares and larger. This can be used exclusively for solar power, or by combined use where e.g. grazing areas and other land use coexist with solar power. Solar power in Norway Over the company’s short history, much has been achieved. Its first solar power plant, Varberg Norra located on the west coast of Sweden, connected to the grid on 1 October 2021, having become one of Sweden’s larg83

est solar power plants, with an annual output of over 5,500 MWh of clean solar power. Following its success in Sweden, Solgrid shifted its focus to Norway. Solar power currently accounts for only a small portion of Norway’s overall power output. However, this is about to change, as the sector has developed significantly in recent years and Norway offers considerable solar power potential. 84
I FALL 2023
Solgrid clearly saw the opportunity and obtained a licence last year for a solar plant projected to be built in eastern Norway, close to the existing power grid. Furuseth Solkraftverk will be the first Norwegian solar power plant on an industrial scale, stretching over 170 acres, with a capacity of around 6.4 GWh of new renewable energy output per year. The project is progressing as planned
also thanks to a solid and good relationship with Solcellespesialisten, Norway’s largest supplier and installer of solar energy systems. Solcellespesialisten provides a full value chain link from sourcing to installation and aftermarket support, and is a trusted partner to large real-estate owners, construction companies and private consumers. Kristin Melsnes explains that the Fu-
ruseth solar plant is expected to be connected to the grid in winter 2023/2024, with others to follow. “Solar power is an absolutely necessary part of the energy mix if we are to reach our climate targets. Solar power, in combination with other renewable energy sources, helps to create balanced energy production and better security of supply in local power grids. During the next dec-

ade, we will implement solar power equivalent to the consumption of 150,000 households.” Swedish opportunity She admits that fast, successful progress can only be achieved in partnerships. “Collaboration is the way we want to work going forward.” In line with this strategy, Solgrid has recently signed an agreement with Soltech Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of Soltech Group, to construct a 300MW solar portfolio in Sweden, where Solgrid becomes an investor and owner in several solar park projects that Soltech Energy Solutions will develop, install and operate. The agreement will represent around SEK2 billion ($185 million) in investment if all of the projects are
approved. The portfolio will predominantly be in the south of the country and the projects will be carefully evaluated based on existing infrastructure and where the solar power plants can harmonize with natural and cultural values. Kristin Melsnes speaks highly positively about the long-term agreement with Soltech. “This agreement lays the foundation for a fruitful collaboration which we believe will strengthen both parties’ position in Sweden. Solar energy conditions in southern Sweden are good, and the local need for energy is substantial. Therefore, we are happy that Soltech Energy Solutions has become our partner for developing solar
power plants at a level that will contribute greatly to the local electricity supply.” The right expertise Solgrid currently employs 20 people and makes sure that its projects meet the requirements for sustainability. “Our expertise gives us an advantage in that we can more easily combine solar power with other land use. Sustainability is part of our DNA, and our building process is very sustainable, fully in line with nature. We are even looking into ways that would enable us to give more than we take when it comes to climate and nature.” As the solar power sector is relatively new in the Nordics, the company is using its acquired experience and capabilities,
as well as suppliers, in international markets. “As we grow, we would like to help develop a local supply chain. Having a supply chain and production lines closer to where we are building solar plants would further reduce our environmental footprint.” The company is growing rapidly, she confirms, saying that with solid owners who think long-term, Solgrid will be an important factor in the further development of solar power in the Nordics. “Ground-mounted solar power can become a significant part of the energy mix, in northern Europe also. High electricity prices are a signal that we need more energy; this also makes it profitable to expand,” concludes Kristin Melsnes. 85

Serving as a client’s single point of responsibility, adi Group offers full support across the spectrum – from the smallest expert installation or maintenance contract to large-scale capital projects, in other words an endto-end, full lifecycle support. With its new Life Sciences division, a specialist multi-disciplinary design and engineering business, the Group is branching out into new exciting territories of the Pharma, Healthcare and Life Science technological sectors, set to provide a bespoke service for its new clients at every step of the way. “We offer full project management services from feasibility and concept, through detail and technical design, to construction, commissioning, and validation, using cutting-edge digital technology,” Darren Lewis summarises the division’s core business. Providing a more general background to the new business, he explained that adi was established in 1990 by Alan Lusty, CEO, who wished to create a self-delivered ‘one-stop-shop’ for engineering services to the manufacturing sector. Over the years, he developed the business, based on a divisional approach to project delivery. Today, adi Group has more than 23 specialist divisions and nearly 750 employees, self-delivering most of the key engineering requirements of the manufacturing and build environment. “Alan, together with our COO Paul Smith, has had expansion plans into the Life Science sector for several years and has finally been able to engage a skilled team that can deliver their vision. Paul has been at the helm of several major pharmaceutical consultant companies
in the past and has been instrumental in the formation of adi Life Sciences.” “His knowledge and insight within the industry, coupled with his vast experience, will be invaluable to our progression within the adi Group, while helping us consolidate our position in our specialist sector,” Darren affirms. “The Group sees the creation of its new division as a pivotal point in its own history.” The right expertise Set up only a few months ago, the division’s team consists of experts with over 30 years of experience and younger inhouse trained and mentored staff. Darren himself has worked in pharma since 1998. Coming from a design background originally, he has been involved in multi-million-pound design and build contracts for key players in the UK pharma market, providing a range of fit-for-purpose facilities for their operations. “Ultimately, we want to offer all of our clients and stakeholders best value for their investment in us. And that comes with the consideration of what their requirements are, understanding their needs, and providing cost certainty as early as we can in the process,” says Darren. We offer clients our best intuitive advice to develop and define their needs, work with them to deliver, and be efficient and effective in our delivery. Compliance is an extremely important factor in our specialist field, and in many cases is just as important as time, cost and quality.” “Of course, we are also harnessing the sustainability aspects of our project commissions - lean manufacturing, intelligent buildings. Our ad89

vantage is this multifaceted approach, which I don’t think many companies have. Our own focus is in synergy with our parent group’s objectives and values to provide an end-to-end approach and a single point of contact.” He further points out that traditionally, capital expenditure has been a key consideration in the Pharma industry, but as the sector moves through sustainability, other elements have come to the forefront, such as the life-cycle cost, and making operations more sustainable and future-proof. “We have significant expertise with sustainable and LZC technologies and processes, which we include into scheme designs efficiently. This approach ensures that 90

the full measure of true innovation is embedded into our best practice project delivery ethic.” Holistic approach The division’s team possesses extensive expertise in designing and engineering complex and sophisticated facilities. In the vast majority of projects, delivery is subject to stringent standards that must be adhered to for regulatory compliance. The team’s specialist capabilities will be used to deliver controlled cleanroom environments for clients in the pharmaceutical manufacturing of drugs and medicines, viral containment facilities and laboratories of all classifications. “The credibility of our team is important.
Over the coming year (and beyond), I will have a strong focus on promoting our talented team to a wide but targeted audience. Our collective goal and ambitions are to have a market-leading reputation and recognition as ‘the best team to collaborate and partner with’. Our strong in-house design capabilities along with our wider Group’s far-ranging capability and excellence will provide an unrivalled dynamic offering to our clients.” “Where required, we can also harness the additional knowledge and experience of the Group to deliver the solutions effectively and efficiently. Speed to market is important in the Pharma industry, so we
will strive to make the whole process as fast as we can, while ensuring it is holistically considered, trying to avoid any pitfalls that a less-experienced company might fall for, so that we can provide a fit-for-purpose solution.” Darren affirms that constructability and maintainability are at the forefront of the team’s design philosophy. “I believe we have all the components and skillsets to deliver unparalleled excellence for our clients, from project inception, right through to construction, validation, commissioning, as well as after-care. In other words, we can provide fully integrated project execution and ongoing facility maintenance,
FALL 2023 I EXECUTIVE INSIGHT MAGAZINE
giving our clients a true turnkey solution across the life cycle of their project.” Building on the strengths With adi having a wide array of divisions specialised in a variety of sectors, the Group has a unique ability to use its know-how to implement any project from start to finish, with a view to establish long-standing relation-
ships with clients. The same applies to suppliers. “Suppliers are fundamental to our success, and we can draw on longterm relationships within the adi Group. When providing sophisticated environments, we may need to bring in new expertise to supplement adi’s existing supplier base. The key is to deliver exactly what the customer wants.”
To this end, the division is also embracing digitisation and complies with ISO 19 650, the standard related to the organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works. “The client can use all data collected for the life cycle of the building. That is also a key differentiator,” says Darren. Still, the division’s success will be primar-
ily based on the expertise of the team. “As their leader, I empower my people to deliver to the best of their ability. We know the strengths that individuals have, and we will trade on those moving forward to ensure the best performance. The start-up has 10 members now, but I’m hoping that within the next 12 months that number will double,” he concludes. 91

The
Egg Solution
Granjazul, a Guatemalan company with more than 50 years of experience in the production and marketing of eggs and egg products, aims to be the preferred alternative in Latin America for delivering world-class comprehensive nutritional solutions.
G
ranjazul’s story is one of continued growth and expansion. “The company was founded by my grandfather in 1953, focusing on producing animal feed, and later on expanded into chicken, breeding and egg production under my father’s management,” says Jose Manuel Segovia, the company’s Managing Director. “Since then, the business has never stopped growing.”

Mr Segovia knows the business inside out, starting to come to the company with his father as a child, later working there throughout his school and university days. Speaking about the business’s development, he points out that what started with some 4,000 chickens in the late 1,960s is today an integrated business employing 700 people, with over one million chickens, that includes a breeder farm, hatchery, pullet farm and two production farms, one of which includes a feed mill. 94
I FALL 2023
Passion for the business He explains that there have been several milestones in the company’s history that have promoted rapid business development – the first was the acquisition of quality certificates that paved the way to becoming a long-term partner to local food chains, including Mc Donald’s. Granjazul was the first poultry company in Central and South America to obtain certification of the FSSC 22000 food safety scheme (Food Safety Management Systems). The second was
placing the product in supermarkets in 1,998, introducing brand packaging and high standards of presentation, with each egg having an expiration date printed on its shell and properly graded. This was something new in Guatemala, and soon Granjazul won 25% of the supermarket share. Today, 50% of output is sold to the food industry and Mr Segovia insists that Granjazul sells not only products but solutions, working with its strategic partners to meet their needs, even participat-
ing in their marketing. “We do things together, we are allies, not just suppliers.” This philosophy has enabled the company to expand to export markets – today the company has a major position in El Salvador, providing the right solution to the industry. “Granjazul is not just my work but also my passion,” he says. “And I’m fortunate to have the right team of people; people with open, innovative minds, ready to accept change, ready to learn. The challenge is to change people’s mindsets for

them; to see that we do more than just sell eggs. Much more. We provide a solution for the industry.” The product He further explains that unlike in Europe, where most people shop in supermarkets whenever and whatever they fancy, Guatemala has a different environment. “Our products are focused on fighting hunger. Our very focus is to educate our customers about the value of a Granjazul egg, and how that egg can make a difference for their family, from the smallest
person to the oldest.” Granjazul’s key purpose is to eradicate hunger with an accessible and nutritious product, through a brand following the best practices aimed at sustainability and the circular economy. “The value chain begins with providing quality food to our birds, applying the strictest controls to ensure their well-being and health, followed by the use of technology through automated processes that guarantee quality egg products.” Modern technology plays an important part
in the quality achieved. Each Granjazul egg is collected and graded using specific equipment, preventing human hands from coming into contact with the product, in order to eliminate contaminants throughout the process. The Granjazul brand is segmented by value channels and the regions that each value channel serves, through a specialised sales force which reflects the needs of clients. At the B2B industry level, the company serves the food service and hotel sector, delivering pasteurized
liquid eggs in industrial quantities as well as 360 whole eggs boxes. Using direct and centralized distribution, the supermarkets are supplied with blister packs with final consumer denominations, from 6 to 180 eggs, and the retail channel is then supplied with egg cartons allowing eggs to be sold individually or in bulk. “We have our own fleet that delivers directly to each centralized point of sale, and we plan to have between 4,000 – 6,000 points of sale within two years. We also 95

have our export channel directly to El Salvador, a country where we have a good market share of the bakery and confectionery industry.” Innovative thinking Granjazul has a research and development department that works with clients to come up with new ideas and innovations. For example, the company sells Granjazul Plus, the first Central American egg recognized by the UN, a product enriched through feed with iron, zinc, selenium and vitamins A and D, aiming to provide the most complete source of protein in Central America to fight the hunger that affects the region. In recent months the company has developed Duritos (ready-to-eat hard-boiled eggs) with the aim of being able to provide a practical, nutritious and economical solution as an alternative to fried food and unhealthy snacks, and is now developing a ready-to-prepare egg-based pancake mix, in order to deliver a nutritious and practical solution to the consumer to reduce their time in the kitchen. To be better prepared for the future and in order to grow its market share, the company has invested in a market study to better understand each value channel and define strategies for innovation and growth. The objective for the coming months will be to stabilise the business and consolidate innovative products such as Duritos, farmed eggs, blue eggs and egg products, and to grow the brand value through trade market-
ing in supermarkets and the retail channel. For Guatemala and beyond Technology will continue to play an important part in the business’s development, just as it did when Mr Segovia’s father first invested in it. “Technology drives us to do different things, to the next level, motivates us to do new things. However, the company is not only technology driven but also sustainability driven. “ “We are focused on the UN Development Goals - Zero Hunger, Health and Well-being, and Responsible Production and Consumption. We have chosen these goals because they are the ones with the greatest significance for our actions, and we are set to achieve them through our products, our technology, our people.” In line with its social responsibility, Granjazul supports a local women’s football team in the Amatiltán region, and sponsors foundations and organizations that fight cancer and children’s malnourishment. “We also help re-forestation by planting over 4,000 trees a year,” notes Mr Segovia. “However, simply being such a highly integrated business, from feed production and hatchery to manure processing and product delivery, in itself supports sustainability and the circular economy. We control all the elements of the value chain, with a clear objective – to have a sustainable business and to guarantee top quality to all our customers, in Guatemala and beyond.” 97
