MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD 2019 April is designated as the Month of the Military Child. This is a time to honor sacrifices made by military families, with an emphasis on the experience of the dependent children of military members serving at home and overseas. Month of the Military Child is sponsored by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy and supported by many other organizations such as the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), Child and Youth Programs, Fleet and Family Support Centers, Airman and Family Readiness Centers and others.

Guam High School Student 2 Student (S2S) club continues to welcome new students to campus, culture and community by offering Welcome breakfast such as this one. So far this school year (Sep. – Jan.) 52 new students were welcomed and helped to feel connected and part of the school. S2S assists with tours for students, and sitting at lunch in the first few days when a student is new. During the welcome Breakfast new students are greeted and provided food, fun and facts. S2S students bring food to share, answer questions new students might have and then offer fun get to know each other games.

The S2S program at Guam High School has a wide variety of excellent members that really go out of their way to make the new students feel as welcome as possible. We asked S2S vicepresident Sam Franchino and S2S secretary Amber Guerrero a couple of questions on how they felt about our program.

One of the questions asked was, “What is your favorite thing about being a member of S2S?” Franchino responded with, “It would have to be being able to show around new students and

introducing them to their teachers and getting them slightly comfortable in this school.” Another question that was asked was “Can you name an experience in which you had a good time interacting with a new student?” Guerrero responded with, “I would say the S2S breakfasts we hold are where I have had a good experience interacting with the new students. Our ice breaker games allow the members and new students to let their walls down and open up to each other.” We also asked a fellow new student from Guam High School how her experience with S2S contributed to her smooth adjustment to a brand new high school. Charlize Samonte stated, “S2S helped me to not get lost every day and members would always help me out whenever I looked incredibly lost.” Samonte also commented,

“Since arriving, S2S has helped me to be introduced to people I never thought I would be close friends with and reintroduced to friends that I used to know.”

DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT AYUDU PARA I MAN APATTĂ O

The Guam National Guard currently has over 60 Airmen deployed to Southwest Asia and 71 Soldiers mobilized to the THAAD Security Forces Mission. There are preparations to deploy more Soldiers in May. During the March 2019 Yellow Ribbon Pre-Deployment Event to help service members and their families plan ahead for the deployment, Naval Base Guam and Andersen Child and Youth Programs, DoDEA Guam Schools, Military and Family Life Counselor, Navy Fleet and Family Support Center Guam and Andersen Airman and Family Readiness Center assisted by providing Resource Tables with information about programs and services.

NATIONAL GUARD YELLOW RIBBON REINTEGRATION PROGRAM Article and photos by Josephine Blas

The National Guard mandates its members to attend Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program (YRRP) events, and family members are strongly encouraged to attend, even children can participate in events where childcare is provided.

The mission of the YRRP is to assist, collaborate, and partner with Services, and agencies at the lowest level possible in order to provide Soldiers, Airmen, Veterans, and Family members with informational events and activities, referrals, and proactive outreach services throughout the phases of deployment or mobilization.

There are five training events: The Pre-Deployment Event helps service members and their families plan ahead for deployment and/or mobilization. Subject matter areas may include financial preparation, emotional health, household support, deployment 6

safety, and other strategies to help the service member and the family transition into the deployment phase.

The During Deployment Event focuses on addressing challenges and stressors associated with separation that National Guard Families may experience, while providing an opportunity for Families to connect with one another. This phase also prepares families for the service members’ return.

The 30-Day Post-Deployment Event helps Service members and their Families reconnect after deployment, provides information about resources that can help reduce the stressors associated with a long separation, and educates the Service member and his or her Family about the benefits they have earned as a result of their deployment and how to access those benefits. This is also an opportunity to welcome Service Members home!

Attendees can look forward to receiving marriage assessment and counseling information, Veterans Affairs information and enrollment assistance, education and training benefits, domestic violence awareness and prevention, suicide awareness and prevention, as well as vital health information on TBI and PTSD. Service Providers will be on hand to help you, representing such organizations as the Veterans Affairs Vet Center, TRICARE, Military OneSource, National Guard Bureau (NGB) Employer Support, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program, and others.

The 60-Day Post-Deployment Event usually involves discussion about communication issues, mental health awareness and referral, emotional fitness issues, and more. Additional services are available to assist with child and youth issues, single Service Member issues, domestic violence awareness, substance abuse awareness, financial management, driver safety, and legal matters.

Finally, the 90-Day Post-Deployment Event centers on the completion of the Post-Deployment Health Re-Assessment.

Marisol will now compete in the Oceania Regional Spelling Bee on March 2 against approximately 30 elementary and middle school students from the Guam and the rest of the Micronesian islands

He correctly answered all questions asked of him during the bee and qualified for the State qualifying test; if he does well on that test, he will compete at the State level against other elementary and middle school students in the DoDEA system

TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION MONTH CHALK ABOUT LOVE

Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) and the School Guidance Counselor worked collaboratively with Ms. Ogo to facilitate lunchtime chalk sessions throughout February.

In observance of February’s Teen Dating Awareness and Prevention Month, Andersen Middle School started the "Chalk About Love" project. Ms. Kayla G. Ogo Education Services Facilitator, Family Advocacy Program at Andersen AFB, Guam shared with the students a presentation on Love: Happy, Healthy, Safe.

"Chalk About Love," is an event in which students expressed themselves creatively on topics of self-love and self-respect, the importance of having healthy relationships, and staying safe in a digital world/practicing digital citizenship. Andersen Middle School provided students with colorful chalk, black paper, and a safe space, during their lunch sessions, to get creative on the topic of the day. Chalk Art is being hung around the campus.

Kirk Winger, sign the Teen Dating Violence Awareness Proclamation at Joint Region Marianas Headquarters Feb. 11. The proclamation called upon all Navy and Air Force personnel and their families to increase their participation in the efforts to prevent teen dating violence."

Teen dating violence is an issue too prevalent throughout the nation. According to Toni Latson, Family Advocacy Program (FAP) Educator, 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience teen dating violence in a single year.

The TDV proclamation is intended to recognize February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness month.

Leaders from both Guam’s Navy and Air Force bases came together on February 11th, 2019 to sign the Teen Dating Violence Awareness Proclamation at the Joint Region Marianas headquarters.

“Teen Dating Violence is an important topic for the military to address because it involves families. We each have teens in our families that we care about and we want to make sure that everybody is treated with respect especially when it comes

to teen dating,” Captain Hans Sholley, Joint Region Marianas Chief of Staff.

The military has collaborated with the DoDEA schools on Guam to address the issue of teen dating violence. Various systems of support are available to help and to educate the community of this issue. ”We have healthy relationship presentations during seminar and outreach during lunches at the Guam high school. We will also be having dating violence and healthy relationship presentations for young service members,” Kayla Ogo, Education Services Facilitator at Andersen “I want to get the word out. I want every teenager in the community to know that there is support mechanism available for them when it comes to teen dating,” said Sholley.

Since the signing of the 2018 TDV Proclamation, the military community has been very active in spreading awareness of teen dating violence.

“Getting the word out with some of the programs we have available for teens is the critical part of this Proclamation signing,” said Sholley.

The proclamation is renewed annually and there are high hopes for this year’s proclamation.

The school guidance counselors, school psychologist, Military and Family Life Counselor, Education Services Facilitator Family Advocacy Program at Andersen AFB and Navy’s Fleet and Family Support Center’s Family Advocacy Program Educator teamed up to offer presentations and activities to expand awareness and encourage teen talk.

PARTNERSHIPS IN EDUCATION DINAĂąA PARA I EDUKASIĂ“N I FAMGUON

Approximately 20 teens from Andersen Middle School, their families, the school guidance counselor, and the Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) participated in a community outreach to GAIN (Guam Animals In Need) Animal Shelter on January 19, 2018. Students represented various clubs including the Society of Teens That Care, Student Council (STUCO) and the

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Regardless of inclement weather conditions and muddy grounds, the children and their parents selflessly volunteered to walk, feed, and socialize with the stray/homeless/abandoned pets from the shelter. Shelter representatives expressed sincere appreciation in having the students there to help out, being that the facility is crowded with stray pets. One of the mothers that attended the outreach stated her children enjoyed walking the dogs and playing in the mud, "exactly what kids love to do." Students with a deployed parent also mentioned finding comfort in volunteering in the community and doing it as a family.

Activities, such as the GAIN community outreach, aim to help the teens develop compassion in helping others (including pets) and promote family involvement. It teaches students that helping the life of one person (even a pet) can make a meaningful difference in the community.

During McCool School’s 3rd Tree of Hope event, over 50 parents, teachers, students and CSS-15, CTF 75, U.S. Coast Guard personnel volunteered to wrap gifts donated by parents and students for more than 100 Inarajan Elementary students.

TREE OF HOPE

Tree of Hope is a project run by the school’s counselors, Mr. Camacho, Mrs. D-W, and Mrs. Shinohara. The program ran from November 16 thru December 5 and helped students at Inarajan Elementary School to fulfill their Christmas wishes.

Each participant choose an ornament and granted the wishes encased inside. They then deliver them to the counselors who gave them out to the chosen students of Inarajan School. This really showed that the spirit of Christmas is not only in receiving, but in giving.

Apply by APRIL 19, 2019 DoDEA Guam High School 11th graders with a 3.0 cumulative GPA are invited to apply for the Student Excellence Award.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Department of Defense (DoD) has granted a temporary exception to policy to allow select service members to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits to dependents until July 12, 2019.

USC PROVOST PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAM:

NAVADMIN 020/19, released Jan. 24, announces that for a limited time, Sailors with at least 10 years of service who are unable to serve four additional years, due to statute or standard policy, may transfer their education benefits to dependents if they agree to serve the maximum time authorized. For example, enlisted Sailors within four years of high year tenure or officers within four years of their statutory limit of service are eligible.

The policy exception is retroactive to July 12, 2018 and ends July 11, 2019, after which Sailors will need to commit to the full four years of service to transfer their benefits.

Sailors with at least 10 years of service whose transfer of education benefits applications were rejected due to the policy changes announced in NAVADMIN 170/18, and who are still serving on active duty or in the selected reserve (SELRES), must reapply for transfer of education benefits by following guidance in NAVADMIN 236/18, including completion of the new statement of understanding at https://myeducation.netc. navy.mil/webta/home.html#nbb.

Four (4) Guam High School students were selected for the University of Southern California Provost's Pre-College Summer Scholarship for Military High School students. High school students from military families earn full scholarships to attend one of USC’s highly-selective, rigorous four-week college credit summer programs. The scholarship covers the entire tuition and fees, airfare, room and board, and course materials for the student to attend the 4-week program in Los Angeles. Course offerings are broad, including architecture, business, pre-law, and performing arts.

The share session panel of 3 military homeschool parents opened a lively and informative discussion of topics such as why homeschool, approaches, resources, post-secondary, traditional school transition, etc. The discussion included information about the Guam Christian Homeschoolers CoOp and the Classical Conversations Guam as groups for homeschool families to come together. The January 12, 2019 Homeschool Support Group for military and DoD affiliated parents overflowed with rich and resourceful conversation among the 20 attendees. USO Tumon Guam with its helpful personnel served as an informal, comfortable and conducive environment for the participants and accompanying children. Through this second event, the School Liaison offered an opportunity for experienced homeschool parents and parents new to the homeschool scene to learn about resources, connect with other homeschoolers, and to share tips, tricks, ideas and questions.

CYP YOUTH SPORTS Submitted by Mr. Ronnie Sanchez, Youth Sports Coordinator, Andersen AFB

The NSA Andersen Youth Sports and Fitness Program in conjunction with the Naval Base Guam (NBG) Youth Sports and Fitness Program conducted a Youth Recreational Basketball and Youth Recreational Cheerleading from November 2018January 2019.

NSA Andersen had a total of ten basketball teams from various age divisions to include the U6, U8, and U11. Teams played for a total of 6 weeks against various Andersen and NBG teams.

The game is played similar to soccer, but uses a Frisbee instead of a ball. The Frisbee is kicked and passed as in soccer. Teams are smaller and based on the area allotted to play. For more info on Skizbee contact the Andresen AFB Teen Ctr. 366-7706.

This season’s cheerleading team was headed by returning coaches Mrs. Ieshia Spears and Mrs. La’Kendria Chambers. The coaches welcomed A1C Bailey Kromm who coached alongside the pair this season. This season’s cheerleading team consisted of youth ranging from ages 5-11 years old. All youth learned various cheers and dances throughout the season and cheered during basketball games.

At the end of the last game of the season, all youth and teams were presented with participation medals for their hard work and dedication.

The Youth Sports Program would like to thank all of the youth, parents and coaches for making another successful season!

ANDERSEN SCHOOL AGE CARE GUEST SPEAKER Submitted by: Vanessa Borja, Child and Youth Program SAC Lead, Andersen AFB

On January 25th, Mr. Hodge volunteered as a guest speaker at Andersen School Age Care (SAC) Program. Mr. Hodge’s daughter, who is enrolled in SAC, introduced her dad to her peers and gave a brief explanation of the topic. Mr. Hodge spoke about the biography of Martin Luther King JR. and asked open ended questions which the children were super excited to answer. Mr. Hodge also spoke about his career background that included his participation in Ironman and Transformers movies.

This sparked interest in our youth to seek further careers in movie production!

MINUTE TO WIN IT Naval Base Guam (NBG) School Age Care (SAC) youth participated in Minute to Win It Challenges during All Day Camp on January 25th. Challenges included, Cookie Face, Lego Toss, One-Handed Bracelet, Puddle Jumper, Balance the Balls, and Bite It. For more information about SAC Camps, contact 339-6130.
