Travelling in the war zones of Syria and Iraq as a Middle East correspondent, she has seen both horror and hope and tells the story of a Syrian couple in the midst of revolution. the middle of his usual hard-won morning nap, with his legs on the desk in the basement of police headquarters, Carl Mørck, head of Department Q, receives a call from a colleague from the Danish island of Bornholm. “Well, yes, I am sorry to bother you, but perhaps you have time to listen to me.” But Carl is dismissive when he realizes that a new case is being foisted on him, and in the other end the receiver is quietly put down. Only a few hours later, the consequences have become completely unpredictable and Carl’s headstrong assistant Rose is more furious than usually. Under much pressure he leads Department Q into a seventeen year old and extremely tragic case of a young, fun-loving woman who disappeared from her school and was found killed hanging in a tree. The very down-to-earth Carl is now facing a difficult and mysterious case, while a skilled manipulator with an iron will protects itself and those around it by all available means and refuses to let anyone or anything get in the way. Throughout the investigation, encountering uncompromising, alternative environments, Rose, Assad, Carl and newcomer Gordon are challenged in all sorts of ways, while old cases and secrets threaten to topple the foursome.

About the author: The first five volumes in the crime thriller series about Department Q: The Woman in the Cage, The Pheasant Killers, Message in a Bottle, Journal 64 and The Marco Effect have made Jussi Adler-Olsen one of the most popular and widely-read authors both in Denmark and internationally. To this day, the series have sold more than 2 million copies in Denmark alone. The series about Department Q are scheduled to be an ongoing story consisting of 10 very different individual novels. Together they tell a comprehensive story about the main characters. The series have been sold for publication in over 40 countries and in many places printed in astronomical numbers of copies. The film rights for the first four novels have been purchased by Zentropa. The first two are out now.

About the author:

Plus I wanted the story to be told from a completely different view. One of my life’s greatest reading experiences was Lawrence Durrell’s ‘Alexandria Quartet‘. I was 20, when I read it for the first time and I was fascinated at the way its point of view shifts: nothing is true; people’s motives are so varied that what is love to one person is cold calculation for the other and abuse to a third. Without comparison, I would like to tell the story of Axel Steen’s ex-wife Cecilie, who is a source of longing, desire, loss, anger and frustration to Axel in the first two books. I have had very differing reactions to her character and it made me want to explore her profile. She is certainly driven by something quite different than the reader is made to think in the first two books.

And then there is the missing murder. I have always loved classic crime stories where the main character receives a phone call in the ﬁrst chapter and has to go to the crime scene. But it was time for me to try something new. I do not want my books to be too alike. And Akrash is a mix between a crime novel and a thriller: there are one or three mysteries you have to ﬁgure out, but there is also a tension curve, where you are fully aware who the bad guys are and who the good guys are, and the struggle between those is what drives the story. And there are plenty of killings in the book – eventually.

Jesper Stein has spent ten years working as a crime reporter in Copenhagen. As a journalist, Jesper Stein has travelled the world, covering wars in the Balkans in the ’90s as well as famine in Africa.

he arson aboard the ship the Scandinavian Star the night of 7 April 1990 is Scandinavia’s biggest unsolved crime. 159 people lost their lives in the blaze. 24 years on it is still unclear who set fire to the ship and why. Was the conflagration started by a pyromaniac as claimed by the authorities? Or are the perpetrators to be found among unscrupulous ship owners and their cronies in the ship’s crew? The case has never been fully investigated, provoking endless theories and speculation. This book aims to tell the definitive story of the Scandinavian Star tragedy, as accurately as is possible in a documentary report. Scandinavian Star gives us the whole story from beginning to end.

Many survivors and relatives of victims have asked themselves whether the ship was set on fire in an attempt to pocket insurance money. $24 million was eventually paid out to the American company SeaEscape, who were the registered owners of the ship at the time of the fire, although a Danish company claimed that they had only recently bought the ship from the Americans. As a consequence, the Danish business man Henrik Johansen was convicted for negligence with regard to on-board safety procedures together with the ship’s captain, Hugo Larsen, and shipping director Ole B. Hansen, in 1993. For survivors and relatives it remains a mystery why the courts considered Henrik Johansen sole owner of the ship, when the insurance money was paid to the company SeaEscape. The truth is that the ownership issues surrounding the Scandinavian Star were never fully clarified.

The story regularly features in the media in all the Nordic countries, whenever new information that could help solve the mystery emerges. Former Norwegian police attorney Nicolai Bjønness, who conducted the original criminal investigation, and fire specialist Kjell Schmidt Pedersen, who headed the fire investigation team, support this quest, in view of the fact that the case was never solved and that new information, which seriously undermines the official explanation, has come to light. For many years, the authorities of Norway, Denmark and Sweden refused to reopen the case; however, Norway has recently decided to do so.

Lars Halskov, 50, is an author and journalist who has covered the mystery of the arson aboard the Scandinavian Star. Lars Halskov is the co-author of three critically acclaimed documentary titles: Condemned Spring – The War in Kosovo (Det fordømte forår: om krig i Kosova) (2000), The Ship that Disappeared (Skibet der forsvandt) (2009) and A Country at War (Et land i krig)(2012).

A summary of events Firm suspicions were cast on a Danish lorry driver, who died in the fire, at the early stages of the Norwegian police investigation. The case was duly closed and this remains the Norwegian police’s official explanation. Subsequently, independent fire safety studies have shown that there were at least four separate fires on the ship and that two of them were started several hours after the lorry driver had perished. These two fires were not included in the official investigation, which only covered the 90 minutes between 1.50 a.m. and 3.20 a.m., when the captain abandoned ship.

The book will be published in Denmark around 1 April 2015 in time for the 25th anniversary of the disaster.

1944 activists in occupied Norway and Denmark realized that their compatriots held in Nazi concentration camps faced extermination as the war was closing in on mainland Germany. Information was leaked that Hitler had issued orders for all prisoners to be executed and the concentration camps destroyed before Allied troops could seize them. Appalled by this prospect, activists sought ways to register and eventually evacuate Scandinavian prisoners from the camps. Despite orders from The Allied Supreme Command in September 1944 that no civilian prisoners held in

Germany was to be released before Allied forces had secured the entire country and established firm control, groups of civilian activist from Norway and Denmark continued their push for some kind of understanding with the Nazi leadership for a step-by-step release of prisoners. Eventually, in February and March 1945, through a concerted effort, a major rescue operation building on these advance initiatives was planned and launched by Swedish Red Cross under the leadership of Count Folke Bernadotte. The operation was a unique humanitarian action. During the course of few weeks and driving hundred of white buses

through the scattered roads of the collapsing Third Reich, volunteers managed to rescue more than 10,000 prisoners. The White Buses tracks the origins of this fascinating operation and reveals the details of the underlying diplomacy that made it possible. Based almost exclusively on contemporary accounts, the book gives a revealing insight into the SS-leadership in the last months, weeks and days of Nazi Germany.
