y life isn’t perfect. Yours probably isn’t either. If it is, I want to know your secret! Trouble shouldn’t surprise us. God promised us we’d have our share of it in our mortal lifetime. But I’m thankful Jesus didn’t end His thought with “In this world you will have trouble.” He went on to say, in John 16:33b, “But take heart! I have overcome the world.” I try to remember that when life’s difficulties are looming large and casting dark shadows. I also try to remember all God’s wonderful promises. He promised we can be reconciled to Him by putting our faith in the finished work of Christ’s sin sacrifice. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. – Colossians 11:19-20 He promised that He will never abandon us, if we are truly His children. “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5 And He promised to prepare a place in heaven for us, a place beyond all imagining, where we will live in His presence eternally. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them. – Hebrews 11:16 Can I get an “amen?” Through this thanksgiving season, I’d like to challenge us all to watch for God’s little blessings sprinkled in with the trials and sorrows; a remarkable sunset, little words of encouragement, baby steps toward greater godliness, or just having food on the table. May God bless you with moments of hope and joy, no matter your circumstances. One day, we will finally be freed from life’s difficulties and know God’s perfect peace. Until then, let’s endeavor to be grateful servants of the King of Kings. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire. – Hebrews 12:28-29

er grandpa was a deacon. Her grandma played the piano. Her aunts sang in the church choir. And her mom was her Sunday School teacher. From her earliest memory, Barb Roose says the small Baptist church where she grew up “framed her childhood.” It was there she first decided to follow Christ. In their evangelistic enthusiasm, her church decided to show the 1972 film series, “A Thief in the Night.” Because of the
films’ messages, many people did surrender their lives to Christ. However, the adults didn’t give due consideration to the impact it would have on the children. Barb was only eight years old when she watched the movies. And she did submit her life to Christ, fearing she’d be left behind at the rapture. She also had nightmares for months. Thankfully, her Sunday school teacher explained Barb’s secure place in Christ and put her fears to rest. She was baptized the following year. TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG

“ God, I can’ t, but You can, and I will let You. ”
Through those formative years, God gave Barb “one of the greatest gifts”; a deep-seated conviction of His unconditional love for her. Her understanding that, as Romans 8:38 tells us, “nothing can separate us from the love of God” is her anchor, no matter what storms blow into her life. Not that she was expecting any big storms. Barb recalls working through Blackaby’s Experiencing God Bible Study when she was in her twenties. She was on board until she reached Unit 7, which discusses the “crisis of belief” we all face when God calls us to something unexpected. She threw the book in a drawer and never looked at it again. She couldn’t imagine ever facing a faith crisis. She was a happy wife, the mom of three young children, living in a nice home, and enjoying a successful career in pharmaceutical sales. Furthermore, she was secure in her walk with God. Any outsider looking in would have agreed she “had it all.” What could possibly shake her?
A New Direction
When Barb was first offered a staff position at CedarCreek Church in Ohio, she was reluctant to accept it. Though it had been her home church for many years, Barb knew being part of a church leadership team had its own set of challenges. During her teen years, she’d witnessed some serious conflict in the church, and the hurt it caused members of her church family. She was afraid of being hurt, too. Once again, God sent someone to allay her fears. Her head pastor and mentor, Lee Powell, addressed her concerns, and she stepped into full-time ministry. Barb served her church faithfully for twelve years. But toward the end of her tenure, she began to feel “a holy discontent for more.” She wasn’t discontent in her work; she knew what she did honored God and was valuable to the church. She wasn’t looking for more recognition or independence. She just had a “hard yearning” for more of what God had in store. She sensed God stirring her, preparing her for something different, something new. Just when we think we have everything in our lives under control, God will often send us a reminder of His sovereignty and our desperate need to rest in it. From 2014-2015, God was guiding Barb through some challenges she could not control. Addiction issues began impacting her family. In the midst of the upheaval, God made it clear He was taking Barb in a new direction. In July of 2015, she began fasting once a week, to earnestly seek God’s guidance and to 6

intercede for her family. In August, she gave her notice at work. It was time for her to move into the ministry He’d prepared for her, and that He’d prepared her for. On January 1, 2016, Barb Roose stepped out on her own, in faith.

Shortly after launching her ministry, Barb left for Nashville to make her first studio recording which coincided with her then recently-published book, Beautiful Already: Reclaiming God’s Perspective on Beauty. She returned home to a marriage crisis. A few years later, her husband decided he no longer wanted to be married. By God’s strength, Barb had already weathered a couple of tough years. Now, she felt the full weight of her new situation. She was self-employed. Though she had some savings, she had no income. She was suddenly the only parent at home, doing her best to care for her traumatized kids. She found herself right in the middle of that “crisis of belief” she never expected to face. During those dark days, Barb struggled with depression and anxiety. Though she persisted in prayer, it often seemed the answers weren’t coming fast enough. As Barb “waited upon the Lord” she found herself crying out, with David, “How long, O God?” Still, no matter how she felt, she knew God would never forsake her. After a long season of watching everything fall apart, Barb remembers praying, “I will trust that whatever you give me, Lord, it will be enough.” Barb knew she had obediently followed God to this place. She was confident in His unconditional love. So, she surrendered her now and her future to God and His faithful provision. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19 Her ministry grew slowly, at first. But, before long, Barb was getting invitations to speak at women’s conferences and events. She went on to write more books and Bible studies, books and studies to encourage other women working through the life lessons she had learned herself. Once she’d walked a difficult path, she eagerly turned around and led others through the rough terrain to the hidden blessings ahead. Each time she creates a new Bible study, Barb has a team of women who work through it with her. They provide valuable insights and feedback along the way. When she began work-

ing on her Surrendered study, she recruited the help of Dena, a volunteer she’d met at a speaking event. Dena’s son was addicted to drugs, homeless, distant from his family, and far from God. She was dying inside every day because of her son’s battle. As she worked through Barb’s study, she recognized her need to surrender her son to God. It wasn’t easy turning over her son, and the burden she carried for him. But she did it. Repeatedly. Each time Dena reclaimed her son, God reminded her to give him back to his Heavenly Father. Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.” – Psalm 50:15 God heard the cries of this mother’s heart. Her son is no longer a homeless addict. He is now following Christ - attending and serving his church. He and his girlfriend are getting married soon. Dena’s difficult surrender invited God’s healing and light into a dark situation.
Strength and Courage
It’s impossible to know how many other dark circumstances Barb’s ministry has helped others face and overcome by God’s power. When asked what one thing she would like to tell everyone, she said it would be “to live the surrendered life.” Someone taught her this one-line prayer many years ago. She continues praying it and teaching it to others. “God, I can’t, but You can, and I will let You.” The words are simple, but living by them day-to-day can be difficult. It takes strength and courage to relinquish control, and to continue relinquishing control time and time again – even when we know it’s the best thing to do. Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:6-7

t thirteen, my first job was delivering the newspaper, The Dallas Morning News. That meant being up at predawn, folding a couple bundles of papers and delivering them door to door. Little was stirring on those quiet mornings and there was ample time to think. Even as a young teen, I frequently pondered the vastness of the universe, as I considered its billions of stars. This led to thoughts of eternity—and I was very afraid. There is a name for that kind of fear, and it’s not uncommon—especially in this chaotic world. It is called Apeirophobia and is the fear of infinity or eternity. It can cause extreme fear and even panic attacks. Though I was going through a period of rebellion, I was raised in church. I believed in God, and in heaven and hell, so the thought of eternity was especially concerning. Two years later at a small Dallas church, my life was transformed when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. That night as I stepped out of church, I looked at the sky and for the first time I had no twinge of fear. I now had a personal relationship with Christ, the Creator of the universe, and the question of where I would spend eternity was settled. There is growing concern in our world about the future. It is an understandable fear. Climate alarmists say that without radical life- altering changes the planet will be uninhabitable within a few years. Scientists, including Stephen Hawking, have sounded the alarm that Artificial Intelligence could actually “spell doom for the human race.” As prophesied, there is a rapid increase of wickedness, knowledge, earthquakes, and famine. There is clearly pestilence, disease, rejection of God, and multiple wars being waged concurrently. None of it should be a surprise to students of the Bible, but it can be frightening. The pages of Daniel and Revelation would make a great, scary Spielberg cliff hanger. However, remember this: The Second Coming of Christ is not a horror story, it is a rescue mission—a love story for those who put their hope in Jesus who has promised to return in victory. We should look forward to God’s promises about the future with hopeful anticipation. The new world God will establish here on earth will be in perfect order, as He had intended. Though we clearly see signs of the end times, those who have tried to guess the exact time of Christ’s return are invariably wrong!
“No one knows the day or the hour when these things will happen, not even the angels of heaven or the Son Himself. Only the Father knows.” – Matthew 24:36 The most important takeaway of any study of end times (including this article) is to be ready. We must live as though Christ’s return could be at any moment. Are you ready? Here are some important steps to take to be certain: • Know you are a born-again child of God through accepting Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Then, commit yourself daily to spiritual growth. • Close any doors to the enemy. Satan is real and his goal is to destroy us for eternity. Don’t hold on to bitterness. Don’t become desensitized to evil. Hold firmly to biblical truth and learn to wage spiritual warfare. • Tell your family and friends about Christ, including His second coming. Let the Holy Spirit direct you to those who need to hear the message. Our prayer is that this message be firmly embedded in your heart each day as you live your life. Be ready for Christ’s return and commit to taking others with you on the extraordinary journey to God’s ultimate eternity. If you would like to study end time events, there are great books out there to help. However, why not begin by studying all the Bible has to say? Start with the book of Daniel, some of the earliest and most important prophesies about the end of the age. Next, study Jesus’ own words about his return in Matthew, chapters 24 and 25. Then, prayerfully study the book of Revelation. Remember, you don’t have to understand everything you read. Much of John’s writings are symbolic and many things are intended to remain a mystery. However, Revelation 1:3 promises that anyone who reads the prophecies in the book will be blessed. When we know the end of the story there is no need to fear the future, or the universe, or eternity. Revelation tells us that God will create a new heaven and a new earth. Everything Satan and sin has destroyed through the ages will come back together in perfect order. That is indeed a happy ending. Ministry with Eastern European Mission
D
By Tamika Rybinski
uring my freshman year of college, I found myself questioning whether I really believed in God for myself, or if my faith was just inherited. I didn’t want to believe something just because my parents did. So, I prayed. I asked God to reveal Himself personally to me. To this point in my life, all I had were personal stories of others that were passed down; I wanted to have my own story and path with Him. Just a few days later, I was on my way back to college after spending a weekend at a friend’s house. We were in a terrible car accident. I am not sure what caused it, but the car flew off the road and wrapped around a tree. My head had actually come to rest in the tree’s fork. I remember looking at the ants going up and down the tree bark. I didn’t feel pain, so I thought I was dead. After they pulled us out of the car and I realized my life had been spared, everything changed. I claimed my beliefs as my own. I was converted. I found new life in Christ. Since then, trees have been a symbol of my faith in God and God’s faithfulness to me. No one should have survived that wreck. That particular spot had seen many fatal accidents, so the ambulance following us called it in as wreckage and kept going. They were certain no one could have survived. Thankfully, a car traveling next to us stopped to check on us. They recognized us, from an earlier rest stop, as fellow students from the same school. Without that “coincidence,” the ambulance would not have turned back. God made it clear to me that this devastating wreck was the answer to my prayer. There is no denying God saved us from death that day. He was faithful to bring me to a place of certainty, confirming He wanted an intimate relationship with me. This gave me a new desire to follow Him with my life. I felt a more personal sense of His calling for me to serve in ministry and mission work. Subsequently, I went on to teach in Christian schools, work with youth and write devotionals. I also saw God’s hand in the fact that I had to take a break from college to recover from the accident. When I returned 10

to a different school as a slightly older student, I met my husband, Bartosz, who was also a non-traditional student. He was in the U.S. on a temporary visa from his native country, Poland. We met through a mutual friend who had ministered in Poland with my husband, and in Colorado with me. We were part of the same ministry outreach for three years, doing mission trips and other group activities together. During this time, my dad was promoted and transferred to the same town where I attended school. Over Thanksgiving break in our senior year, when everyone else went home for the holiday, Bartosz and I made plans to do something together. But first, I wanted to stop by my parents’ house. This was the first time all of my extended family was gathered to celebrate. Once Bartosz and my grandfather met, we never left. My grandfather was a war veteran, and because Bartosz was from Poland and a military family, they were fascinated by each other. They shared stories for hours, late into the night. Bartosz and I had to reschedule our plans for later that weekend. By that time, we realized we were ready to call it a “date.” We were engaged by Christmas.
God’s Redirection
My plan was to move to Honduras after graduation to help open an orphanage. Bartosz planned to return to Poland when his student visa expired. Once we became engaged, he was able to obtain a fiancé visa and continue to work and study here in the United States. We both became interns at the same church. After our wedding in 2001, Bartosz continued working for the same Oklahoma church. We had our first child while serving there. I became pregnant with our second as we started putting together a team to go plant a church in Warsaw. I lost the baby, and the doctors discovered I had cancer. While I was receiving treatment and participating in a medical trial, our plans were up in the air. The church planting team disbanded. It was at this crossroads in our lives, Bartosz received a call from Eastern European Mission. It was the answer to his prayers about his future ministry direction. They were looking for someone with an Eastern European background, who had

experience working with churches and who also understood the business side of things. Bartosz had a business degree from Poland and a Master of Ministry degree. He was their perfect fit. We had been through some times of heartache and questioning, but it was clear this was God’s path for us. We are so grateful for His faithfulness and guidance in our lives.
God’s Perfect Plan
When we first moved to Austria, we lived in an apartment above the print shop where EEM (Eastern European Mission) printed its Bibles for distribution in the region. Art was one of my hobbies, but there was no space for my easel upstairs. So Scott Hayes, who manages the printing for EEM, let me put my easel in his office. He noticed my artwork and started asking me to consult on the design, color schemes and cover art for some of the Bible printing projects. Even after we moved into a separate building, Scott kept asking me to come into the office and review designs. He eventually hired me on as an assistant in his department. As EEM grew, I refined what I did beyond helping select colors and design layouts. I now create the actual artwork. It’s an unexpected blessing to use one of my hobbies and passions at work every single day. I never expected to see my artwork in kids’ Bibles distributed to different countries. This role with EEM is very exciting and humbling. My favorite thing about being a part of EEM is getting to know God in a variety of ways, because we get to see the many different avenues in which He operates throughout the world. How far will God go for just one person? What does that look like? For me, it was a car Tamika and Bartosz Rybinski, wreck in college that should serving with Eastern European Mission in Austria. have been fatal.
Each week, while preparing for social media posts, I read through our reports and stories from the war between Russia and Ukraine. I am amazed that, in the midst of all this trauma, the thing people hunger for most is the word of God. Regardless of how much they are suffering, people are braving the frontlines to deliver Bibles and humanitarian aid to others in Ukraine. People are living through the unthinkable, and hope arrives in a Bible with a sunflower on the cover. They need food, but they are desperate for what only the Word of God can give. No matter how devastating the world feels, it is amazing to see - over and over again - how far God will go for just one person. EEM’s emphasis on providing Bibles, free of charge, for anyone who needs one, has touched an untold number of lives. It means so much to me to be a tiny part of getting God’s Word into someone’s hands - someone He is drawing to Himself - and doing it in partnership and unity with other ministries working to spread the Gospel. I am eternally grateful God spared my life and called me to serve through this ministry. I invite others to join me in this work through their prayers and donations, as we continue to receive many requests for Bibles. God’s Spirit is moving in Eastern Europe. Tamika Rybinski serves as a graphic designer and illustrator for EEM, designing layout and providing artwork for many of the ministry’s projects, including teen and children’s Bibles. A co-author of Liturgies and Laments for the Sojourner, she is based in Vienna, Austria, alongside her husband Bartosz, EEM’s European Director, and their three children.
Bibles For Eastern Europe
Eastern European Mission has been providing Bibles
and Bible-based literature to people in Eastern Europe and beyond, free of charge, since 1961. During the Cold War, when Eastern Europe was in communism’s tight grip, a small band of missionaries bravely answered God’s call to smuggle Bibles behind the Iron Curtain. It wasn’t until the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, that missionaries could freely distribute Bibles and literature without risking their lives. That year, 50,000 Bibles were openly handed out in Russia. Through the years, their ministry has continued expanding. EEM currently distributes Bibles in 30 countries, printed in 21 different languages. The ministry’s Fall Hope Campaign is going on right now. You can learn more about the ministry and how to support it at www.eem.org. You can also access their prayer guide at https://www.eem.org/prayer-guide/.

man was accused of murder and brought before a judge. The man admitted his guilt, the jury found him guilty, and the judge pronounced his sentence with deep sorrow: the death penalty. The guilty man was his own son. Despite the judge’s deep love for him, he could not dismiss the charges or avert the penalty. He must uphold the law or be a corrupt, unjust judge. He was caught in a heart-wrenching dilemma. Then he thought of a solution. The judge stepped down, removed his robe, and exchanged places with his son. He was executed in his son’s place. That’s what Jesus, in His grace and mercy, did for us when he died on the cross. He was not guilty but paid the penalty for our guilt; he was sinless but paid the price for our sin.

God’s forgiveness is available to anyone who will own, ask forgiveness for, and turn away from their sin (repent) and put their hope, faith, and trust in Christ alone. Only His blood, shed on the cross, can wash away the guilt of our sin so we can forever enjoy God’s forgiveness and fellowship. The question is, will you accept God’s free gift? It’s only a sincere prayer away. If you’d like to find new life in Christ, tell God you are sorry for your past wrongs and want Him to be your Lord and Savior. He’ll send the Holy Spirit to live in you, guide you, and change you from the inside out. “It is by grace you have been saved through faith — and this is not through yourselves, it is the gift of God — not of works, so that no one can boast” —Ephesians 2:8-9.

DAVE SAYS

Dear Dave,

Dave Ramsey is a seven-time #1 national best-selling author, personal finance expert, and host of The Ramsey Show, heard by more than 18 million listeners each week. He has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Today Show, Fox News, CNN, Fox Business, and many more. Since 1992, Dave has helped people regain control of their money, build wealth, and enhance their lives. He also serves as CEO for Ramsey Solutions.
Is it even worth it to buy a house these days? I’ve always been told buying a house is the adult thing to do and that it’s a great investment, but I can’t find anything decent and livable in my area for less than $350,000. My wife and I are debt-free, and we’re expecting our first baby in January. I was hoping to get your advice. —Craig
Dear Dave, I lost my job a couple of years ago. As a result, I ended up in about $25,000 of debt through credit cards and a consolidation loan. Now I have a great job making more than I’ve ever made before, plus a car loan for about $13,000. The older debts went to collections, but I’m not being hounded by collectors at this point. I want to get control of my money and do things the right way, so how should I handle things? —Mike Dear Mike, Well, being hounded isn’t the issue. Morally, you owe the money. You took money under agreements that you’d pay it back, and that means you need to pay it—both the old and new debts. I’d start by running two debt snowballs. Let’s do one for the car and any other active debts you have first since the collectors aren’t after you about the old, dead debt. Then, smallest to largest, start knocking out the debt that’s in collections. When it comes to these guys, reach out and get an agreement in writing detailing exactly how much you owe and the monthly payment amounts. Remember, do not give any of these folks direct access to your bank accounts. There’s no upside to not paying what you owe. It’s an integrity issue, it’s a legal issue, and it’s a credit issue. Did I mention it’s an integrity issue, Mike? You want this stuff out of your life. If you don’t take care of it, I guarantee it’ll come back to haunt you somewhere down the road! — Dave
TODAY’S CHRISTIAN LIVING
NOVEMBER 2023
Dear Craig, I can understand how things might feel a little hopeless in your current situation. You’re probably feeling the weight of the responsibility a new life brings to the picture. Things are getting real really fast, aren’t they? Believe me, I get it. The truth is you may not be ready to buy a house today. And that’s okay. Having a new baby on the horizon doesn’t mean you have to run out and buy a home. That little boy or girl isn’t going to know the difference between a house and an apartment for a long time. Right now, giving your child a safe, loving environment is the most important thing. Now, looking down the road, is owning a house worth it? Yes. But it’s not worth doing it at the wrong time or in a stupid way. You first need to make sure the income is there. Then, you need an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place along with a strong down payment. So, what if you don’t buy a home for another two or three years? Home buying should always be done with patience and wisdom. There are two or three things that make buying a home a great long-term investment versus renting your whole life: • Rents go up every year. If you lock in a good, fixed-rate mortgage, that payment will stay the same. • The value of your home will increase. When you rent, you don’t own your residence, and you won’t benefit from the value of it going up. • Our study of 10,000 millionaires showed that most say two things were integral parts of their ability to build wealth: Good retirement investments and a paid-off home. A house is a great wealth-building tool, and it can also stabilize the biggest line item in your budget—housing. God bless you guys, Craig! — Dave
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
Our next-door neighbor was an older single man with no family, and my wife and I always tried to look out for him and help with things. He died recently, and in his will, he left us his home, his car and the money he had in his bank account. The will was handwritten, and it said the house was worth around $350,000, with $150,000 left on the mortgage. The car is worth about $10,000. Officials at our county office building said the money in the bank account wouldn’t have to go into probate since I was listed as the beneficiary, and I was given a check for that amount. We’ve just never handled anything like this before, and my wife and I were hoping you would help us navigate things.
Earlier this month, my husband and I were both laid off from our jobs within a few days of each other. The layoffs were not our fault. The company is letting several people go as a cost-cutting measure. We cashed in an annuity because our finances have been tight, but the good news is my husband began training for a new job last week. We don’t have children, so I am interviewing or filling out applications every day. Should we use the cash from the annuity to live on until things are stable again, or should we use it to pay off debt?
—Steven
Dear Anjanette, If you haven’t done so already, contact your creditors and explain what happened. Let them know the layoffs weren’t because either of you did anything wrong, and that you’ll get current with them as soon as possible. This is a scary situation you’re facing, so make sure you two keep the lines of communication wide open and encourage each other while you’re solving this problem. The good news, though, is it sounds like things may be looking up. Support your husband all you can as he takes on his new job, and make sure you continue looking for work, too. A little extra money never hurts, so temporarily taking on a parttime gig while you’re looking for a permanent position isn’t a bad idea, either. Of course, you need to be honorable and pay your debts if possible. But that may have to be put on hold for a while. Right now, the important thing is keeping food in the house and the lights and heat on. Hug on each other, stay determined and keep each other’s spirits up. You’re a team, and you’ll get through this. Always remember, too, that prayer’s a good thing. — Dave
Dear Steven, There are a couple hundred thousand dollars in equity involved here. The fact that the will is handwritten doesn’t necessarily invalidate it, but it does increase the possibility of encountering some bumps down the road. I’m not a lawyer, so the first thing I’d do is talk to a couple of probate attorneys in your county. Find out what they’d charge to handle things. I wouldn’t spend thousands of dollars to get this done, but I would pay $500, maybe $1,000, to let someone who knows what they’re doing handle things. If your county affairs people are right and everything’s easy and straightforward, it’s not a lot of legal work for an attorney. On top of that, if the attorney you work with knows folks at the courthouse and is familiar with how things work there, then it’s kind of like traffic court, you know? It’s almost automatic. I mean, we’re only talking about three assets here—a bank account that’s already been handed off, a car and a house that’s mortgaged. For me, it’d be worth a little money to have someone on my side who knows the path through the woods. I’m sorry to hear your friend and neighbor passed on, Steven. But I hope I’ve been able to help. — Dave

oung Jin Ghun knew something was wrong when he was awakened by his mother’s shrill screams. Sprinting upstairs, he saw his brother lying on the floor. Young frantically administered CPR while his mom called 911, but from the moment he walked into the room, Young knew his brother had died from a drug overdose. When paramedics arrived, they found Young bent over his dead brother’s body, praying loudly. He didn’t pay any attention to the commotion around him as he cried out to God. But Young’s spiritual journey began long before that tragic day. When Young was 8, his father went to prison, a trial that spurred his family to attend church regularly. Although Young made a profession of faith at age 11, the second-generation Korean-American now believes he wasn’t genuinely saved until much later in life. At age 13, Young abandoned Christianity in favor of agnosticism because of mounting doubts. Those doubts led Young to turn to increasingly addictive substances, an attempt to stave off the emptiness he felt. “I was someone who continued to struggle with feeling less than, like I just wasn’t enough,” Young said. Starting with alcohol and marijuana, Young’s downward slide resulted in his expulsion from high school. The following two decades were a blur of drug-induced comas and jail time. It wasn’t until his younger brother saved him from an overdose that Young began earnestly fighting his addictions. But everything changed when his brother died. Young’s prayer, as he huddled over his brother’s body, was the first in years. He asked God to take his brother to heaven. “In that moment, the biggest shift was I knew that there was a Creator,” Young said. He remembered Jonah’s prayer from the belly of the fish. “In that moment of brokenness, I was just like, ‘Thank you, God,’ which I knew the Lord could work with.” But knowing God existed didn’t yet lead Young to repent. Reeling from the loss of his brother and, later that year, his grandmother, Young gave up on his first attempt to fight his addiction. His life began to fall apart again. He was facing charges carrying hefty prison sentences when he turned to Miracle Hill Ministries, a Christian nonprofit in Greenville,

South Carolina. Its addiction recovery program, Overcomers, was recommended by friends, who also paid his air fare. As Young meditated on and learned to apply Scripture, he became sober for the first time in years. Overcomers, however, gave Young an even more important gift. While studying the account of Nicodemus in John 3 about three weeks into the program, Young realized that although he believed God existed, he’d never obeyed Christ’s command to be born again. Suddenly, the world began to make sense. “The Bible, for me, felt a lot like coming home to my first language,” Young said. “For the first time I realized that Jesus was a real person who actually existed.” Coming to grips with his broken soul and genuinely repenting of his sins for the first time, Young poured out his heart to God. His life radically changed. He never touched drugs again. He earned his GED and began attending Bob Jones University. Young was spending time in God’s Word, serving God’s people as a youth group leader, and helping lead worship at his church. He then decided to work as a counselor with Overcomers, to help others with their battles. Back in Colorado, Young still had 20 days he needed to serve in jail. Even then, Young recognized that God was working through this difficult situation. God answered his prayers not to allow COVID restrictions to interfere with his plans to return to Miracle Hill. During his sentence, which Young called “a mission trip,” he was also able to lead some fellow inmates to the Lord. “That was the first time I’d ever been able to witness to somebody, … and they came to salvation.” Encouraging letters and phone calls from believers at his church, work, and college gave Young the faith to persevere while he was in jail. He finished his prison sentence only three days before the beginning of his sophomore year. Reflecting on God’s goodness to Him throughout his life, Young said, “His plan is just so much greater than I could have ever imagined.”

Phantom in the Foyer
I
By Michael C. Coon
arrived a little early, they arrived late. My boss and his wife invited me to their church for a Christmas pageant. I didn’t have any plans, and since I was alone – I hated not having anything to do on a Saturday night - I chose to accept the invitation. “Better than watching reruns with the dog,” I thought. We agreed to meet about ten minutes before the 7:00 p.m. starting time. I was there around 6:40 p.m., a member of another church in a different part of the city. I had been a Christian for several years. Visiting other churches had never been a problem for me. Tonight was different. I was alone, sorting through feelings of low esteem and shame after a divorce. I felt a tinge of apprehension walking up to open the doors, but rested in the idea my friends were waiting for me inside the foyer. I walked into an undercurrent of voices coming from pockets of people filling the room. All of them were strangers to me. Still, I assumed most of them were people I belonged with. “Where are they?” I didn’t see my friends. Being head and shoulders above many, I had the natural advantage of a higher perch, a better view for scanning the horizon. This was a backdrop of contradiction: feeling awkward and conspicuous walking through the surrounding crowd yet feeling alone weaving through gaps in the clusters of people. Panning the room with eagerness, I hoped my search would end quickly, that my eyes would catch the welcome sight of their faces. I turned, looking back at the front doors. “Maybe they just got here,” I thought bouncing my eyes to the left and right of the foyer. My friends were still not here. 18

I wanted relief from my discomforting feelings of being an alien. I noticed darting eyes looking away from me. From many of the groups I passed, a head would turn. Sometimes the entire group looked at me for a moment, before returning to conversations my presence interrupted. “C’mon you guys. Where are you?” I felt like a phantom in the foyer, a shadowy, transparent image passing unnoticed. My presence was heard, but the fearful apprehension left me banished, as a lonely soul wandering in this unfamiliar church setting. “Isn’t anyone going to extend a hand of welcome? So, this is what it feels like to be a visitor. Man, I wish someone would talk to me. What time is it?” Looking at my watch provided a brief interruption from my concern: “I’ve only been here for seven minutes?” The area near the welcome center had less people standing in it. I felt comfortable there. From that vantage point, I could see the front doors across the foyer. “Hi. Are you looking for someone?” she asked. “So, these aren’t mannequins after all,” I thought. She was in a group of four, all standing in silence, one smiling while this lady asked her question with folded arms. “Hi. My name is Michael, I was invited here by some friends of mine, Jerry, and Marcy.” “I know them,” she said as she started scouting for them in the foyer. “I don’t see them here yet. We still have a few minutes, hopefully they’ll be here soon. Welcome,” she said, returning to her conversation. “Thanks,” I said. I resumed my walk toward the visitor center. “Did something
happen? What if they don’t show up? I am not staying, that’s for sure. This church isn’t very friendly.” The sound of their voices never sounded better: “Hey Michael-san! Sorry we’re late. You been here long?” I gave Marcy a hug and shook Jerry’s hand. “Eh, about fifteen minutes. I was hoping you were still coming” I said. “Did you find the church alright?” “Yes, I did. Where do you guys like to sit?” I said as we joined people meandering into the sanctuary. The Christmas pageant was enjoyable. Children singing off key, at times missing a queue, yawning or occasionally picking their noses, put a smile on my face. The pageant ended with the pastor delivering a message of Christmas hope. Jerry and Marcy had to get home to their dogs, leaving no time to go for a bite to eat. Driving home I wondered, “Why did I feel uncomfortable in a church – in that church? Has my appearance become hard or unfriendly? People weren’t too friendly until Jerry and Marcy started introducing me to their other friends.” Three weeks later, I was with friends and acquaintances at my home church. He came through the front door alone. He was an intimidating figure at first glance: a younger man than me, with a shaved head and thick mustache. He was dressed in jeans and his arms filled his tan T-shirt. His stature made him look like he could hold his own in a fight. Yet contrary to his appearance, he was traveling through the foyer with reservation. I saw the same apprehension in him that I felt the night of the Christmas pageant. I looked away before he noticed me. “Remember what it was like?” You need to go introduce yourself,” I thought.
Tension to respond was building in me. Three weeks ago, I was living his experience of today. Was it now my duty to respond? I didn’t want him to feel like I did, like a phantom in our foyer. My intimidation caused me to delay. While I was mentally wrestling over what to do, he saw me, which triggered an instant response in me. I walked up to him, stuck out my hand and said, “Hey, my name is Michael. What’s yours? I don’t believe I’ve seen you before,” I said. We continued getting acquainted until the Sunday morning worship service started. Before he left, a few more of us were talking – thanking him for visiting with us. A few Sundays later, our church became his church home. “Should I say something?” While it can be a little scary introducing myself to a visitor, my feelings are more than likely magnified in the mind and heart of the visitor. Visiting a church where I didn’t know anyone, and no one offered to get to know me, left an indelible impression. If greeting a visitor and offering a handshake can encourage someone looking for a church home, or someone who is curious about the claims of the gospel, stepping out of my shell is a small sacrifice. Besides, it gets a little easier each time I do it. Michael Coon is both a student and an enrollment counselor in the online College of Adult and Graduate Studies, at Colorado Christian University. He will soon complete a BA in Creative Writing. He served as chaplain at the Denver Rescue Mission for 27 years. Michael and his wife currently live in North Carolina, where he works as a freelance writer, preacher and speaker. In his spare time, Michael enjoys music (playing trumpet), history, travel, and the outdoors. TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG

o not be afraid. It is the most often repeated command in all of Scripture. God must have known how quickly fear and anxiety slip into our hearts. Our minds so readily begin to spiral into worry, and before we know it, we are in a deep abyss of what-ifs and what-abouts. I am often surprised by how frequently I have to learn, again, not to be afraid and by how quickly, just when I think I’ve got it mastered, I forget yet again. Last week, we read about how Abram gave up his right to the riches he plundered from the four Eastern kings while saving Lot. He rejected the offer of instant wealth because he wanted God alone to receive all the glory when he finally inherits the land God has promised and becomes a great nation.
NOVEMBER 2023
I have a lot to learn here. Often when I don’t understand what God is doing or when I feel that He is taking too long to come through on His promises, I’m inclined to take things into my own hands, to look for sufficiency and a solution elsewhere. But not Abram. He’s far from home, he’s getting old, he still has no children, but he trusts fully in the promise of God. And in reply to this faith, this clear show of trust, God says to Abram, “Do not be afraid. . . I am . . . your very great reward” Genesis 15:1.
Fall in Love This Christmas
Not your land. Not your financial security. Not your job, not your wife, not your family. I am your shield. I will protect you. I am your great reward. I will be all you need. No amount of riches, no amount of land, no number of descendants could be a better reward than God Himself. In your own life, in mine, no amount of success, no amount of financial security, no amount of happiness can rival the reward that is found in relationship with and dependence on our almighty Father. God Himself is what we are seeking. God Himself is what we are longing for. God Himself is what we need above all else. He may still give the other things, sure. I look around my own life and it is abundantly clear that God has given me good things. He eventually gives Abram a son in his old age and the land of Canaan to his descendants. He rescues His people out of slavery in Egypt and, much later, out of slavery from sin when He sends His Son to die for our ransom. But among all these blessings that God gives, the very greatest reward He gives to Abram, and to you and me, is Himself. God gives us more of Himself. It has been many years since God asked Abram to leave his home in Ur, where He first promised Abram that He would make him a great nation. Abram is still waiting on God to fulfill this promise that he will one day have a child. Similarly, today, it has been a great many years since God promised, through Jesus, that He was preparing a place for us to live eternally in heaven. Oh, how I long for the fulfillment of that promise. This broken world seems to get darker by the day, as hatred, disease, and destruction fill the headlines. I long for the promised day when Jesus will restore us to Himself and wipe away every tear from every eye. Yet, in Abram’s waiting and in our own, this is God’s promise: He will be our shield. Our exceedingly great reward. No matter how long we wait. No matter what comes. No matter what sorrow or loss or heartache this world throws at us. God will still be God, and He will still be good, and He is enough for us. Life with Him here and now, and life with Him eternal, is our greatest hope, our greatest reward. • What are you looking to for comfort and protection? • What would it look like to long for God’s presence and nearness above all other tangible rewards the world offers? • How can you practice appreciating His presence as your great reward in your everyday life?

Beautiful Brokenness Lessons from the Gifts of the Three Kings
By Jessica Burchfield “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.”
E
— Matthew 2:10-11
piphany; the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi in Matthew 2:1-12. In many churches, the Season of Epiphany runs from the Twelfth Day of Christmas to Ash Wednesday. It honors the three wise men from the East who followed the Christmas star to Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn Christ child. Epiphany is a beautiful story of devotion and dedication… but it is so much more than that. In a recent Sunday sermon about the Seven Churches of Revelations, my pastor briefly described the process of harvesting myrrh, the chief export from the coastal city, Smyrna. It stayed with me for days. Upon studying myrrh and its extraction, I was awed to find a truth buried in the story I’ve known my entire life. Myrrh; the fragrant resin extracted from the thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora. It was used in perfume, medicine, incense, and embalming. Its fragrance is intensely warm and aromatic, and when burned as incense, was believed to cleanse the air of harmful particles causing contagious diseases. Both myrrh and frankincense were known to be burned in temples across the ancient world. Frankincense; harvested from a tree from the genus Boswellia. In contrast to myrrh, frankincense gives off a cit-

rusy, sweet aroma known to ward off insects. It also brings antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties to healing oils and is commonly used in perfumes and incense. Frankincense and myrrh are often referenced together in ancient texts as their healing properties worked in unison. Gold; highly prized precious metal that bestowed upon its owner status, wealth and social standing. Gold has held its value since biblical times. Mentioned over 400 times in the Bible, gold is frequently compared to faith and the acquisition of knowledge. But why did the Three Kings bring these three specific gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh? Did they hold some magical, ancient mysteries when combined? They were beautiful gifts, but the hidden message found within these ancient elements is profound.
Broken & Bled
Myrrh and Frankincense are harvested in similar ways. The trees are cut, bled, and left alone to cure. Where the bark is cut, a sap-like substance called resin bleeds in and creates a type of scab over the wound. Harvesters scrape the hardened resin from the tree and distill it through a steam process to extract the oil, which is used for apothecary purposes. Gold is purified by placing it in temperatures of almost 2000oF. It is melted down to liquid, then remolded into the desired shape of the artist. Essentially, its very physical structure is broken, reduced to liquid, and recreated. Is this not a picture of the Christian walk? Gold, frankincense, and myrrh did not just signify wealth and beauty. These three elements foreshadowed the life of Jesus, and through His life and sacrifice, the lives of every Christian.
cutting and purging of being broken before God, the fragrance of our Christianity will never permeate the darkness. Brokenness brings forth the aroma of strengthening faith. Just as with gold, frankincense, and myrrh, there is overwhelming beauty in being broken!
Blessed Brokenness
Life is hard. We struggle daily with living a Christian walk that is pleasing to God. We wrestle with job pressures, family conflicts, and internal battles, all while trying to keep our heads above water as we take life one day at a time. Sometimes we are so broken, even daily tasks can be overwhelming. Life can be unforgiving and brutal. Sometimes it feels like the darkness of brokenness will win.
Beauty in Being Broken
Mirriam Webster defines the word break as: “to separate into parts with suddenness or violence; to cut into or turn over the surface of; to crush the spirit of; and, to exhaust in health, strength, or capacity.” To be broken is to be rendered inoperable, to be wounded to the point that repair is needed to continue use. Have you ever considered the Sermon on the Mount? Really stopped and considered it? Why did Jesus say so much about suffering and hardships during one of His most public sermons? Within this famous sermon, Jesus gives us nine examples of how we gain the favor of God; of those nine, five remind us that the Christian life is not easy. Jesus said that the poor in spirit, the mourners, the hungry, the persecuted, and the reviled are those that receive the greatest of blessings. “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” – Matthew 5:12 ESV Brokenness is guttural. It is pain, depression, and grief. To be broken is to live in a constant state of darkness, disillusionment, and despair. It is bleak and melancholy. Time has no meaning when you’re broken; days turn to weeks, weeks turn to months, and months turn to years as we attempt to tread the turbulent seas of heartache and pain. But without the
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18 In the song “New Wine” by Hillsong Worship, we are reminded that the crushing and breaking of grapes brings forth wine. By comparison, in our crushing and breaking, God creates the promise of new wine springing forth from our suffering. Our brokenness brings forth blessings far beyond anything we could ever imagine. If you’re anything like me, crushing and breaking isn’t exactly my cup of tea. I am not a fan of pain and suffering; rather, I avoid it at all costs. But, if I avoid the challenge of growth, albeit painful, I will become stagnant, not producing any good fruit… and that’s no way to live. Go deeper into the brokenness. Lay your heart out before God. Tell Him your heartaches. Rely on His strength to help you persevere through the brokenness. Share your troubles with friends and let them support you. Give loved ones a chance to share your burdens. To be pressed and crushed is the sign of a healthy Christian walk. Be confident that the brokenness in which you find yourself will yield the fragrance of growth. During Epiphany, when we remember the gifts brought to Jesus by the three kings from the East, let’s embrace the trials and testing that are ultimately designed for our good and the glory of God. Let’s make 2024 the year of embracing the beautiful brokenness at the heart of Christianity. Jessica Burchfield is a high school teacher, photographer, and writer from Florida. After earning her Masters of Ministry, she spent two years teaching English in China, followed by 20+ years in education, from communications to curriculum development and back to the classroom. and teach family medicine residents. Increasingly our patients and colleagues tell us of growing numbers of patients who really feel like CBD is helping them for a wide variety of common conditions. I’d be interested in your thoughts medically.
Answer: Let me break your question into sev-
eral questions that I’m sure will be of interest to our readers.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive constituent of the plant Cannabis sativa – the two best known forms of which are marijuana and hemp. Over 80 different chemicals, known as cannabinoids, have been identified from Cannabis sativa, of which delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the major psychoactive compound. CBD makes up around 40% of cannabis extracts. Although it is typically derived from marijuana or hemp, these products may contain traces of THC or other impurities. This is not at all uncommon with CBD products. The Doctors of Pharmacology (PharmDs) at NaturalMedicinesTM (formerly Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database) warn, “Various commercially available cannabidiol dietary supplements have been shown to be contaminated with THC or synthetic cannabinoids.” Fortunately, CBD can also be derived from other sources such as orange peels through a process that produces CBD with no THC or other impurities.
How popular is CBD and for what conditions do people use CBD?
CBD is growing wildly in popularity. The market size is soaring and could reach $1.3 billion in the U.S. by 2024. The New York Times reports, “We are bombarded by a dizzying variety of CBDinfused products: beers, gummies, chocolates, and marshmallows; lotions to rub on aching joints; oils to swallow … Even CVS and Walgreens have announced plans to sell CBD products in certain states.” The Times adds, “Many of these products

are vague about what exactly CBD can do. … Yet promises abound on the Internet, where numerous articles and testimonials suggest that CBD can effectively treat not just epilepsy but also anxiety, pain, sleeplessness, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, and even anger.” But has CBD been shown to be effective for anything? The experts at NaturalMedicinesTM have concluded that there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate CBD as even possibly effective for a wide variety of indications – including anxiety, athletic performance, cancer, cognitive function, COVID-19, Crohn disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia, hypertension, insomnia, IBS, neuropathy, obesity, pain (acute or chronic), PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis, TMD, or for many other disorders for which it has been studied. ConsumerLab.com notes, “Preliminary evidence suggests [CBD] may help with anxiety, schizophrenia, and other conditions. However, most of these effects have involved large doses of CBD – hundreds of milligrams per day, which is more than in many marketed CBD supplements and products. CBD applied to the skin (such as CBD creams, gels, and lotions) may modestly reduce some forms of pain and might promote hair regrowth).”
Has CBD been proven to work for anything?
There is one condition in which CBD has been proven effective. A specific prescription cannabidiol product, Epidiolex®, is FDA-approved for use in several forms of epilepsy, including Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, Dravet Syndrome, and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. However, it is unclear if other CBD products are beneficial for these conditions. And Epidiolex is very expensive. Drugs. com quotes a cost “of around $1000 for a supply of 60 milliliters.” No wonder people wanting to try CBD choose over-the-counter products. But this can be risky.
What side effects does CBD have?
NaturalMedicinesTM rates CBD as “possibly safe” when used orally and appropriately in adults; however, they do not give CBD their “probably safe” or “safe” rating. They write that CBD doses up to 200 mg daily have been used with apparent safety for up to 13 weeks, while higher doses of 700 mg daily for up to 6 weeks and 1200 mg daily for up to 4 weeks have also been used with “apparent safety,” concluding that oral CBD “seems to be well tolerated.”
amount of CBD from each product ranged more than 10-fold, from just 24 cents to $2.67 per 10 mg. Interestingly, there were many better, lower-cost products available on the market than CL found in its 2018 review. Levels of THC also tended to be much lower, with THC not detectable in most products.” Based on quality and value, ConsumerLab selected several Top Picks for oral and topical use – as well as a Top Pick for pets (tinyurl.com/54hbab9j).
Other cautions and warnings But like every prescription or over the counter medicine, there are potential common adverse effects. Prescription CBD causes sleepiness in up to 30% of patients and diarrhea in up to 24%. It can also cause decreased appetite, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, fever, and vomiting. The higher the dose, the more likely are side effects. Fortunately, serious adverse effects, such as hepatitis, respiratory depression, and pneumonia, have been rare.
How do I choose a CBD to purchase if I want to try it?
In 2015, the FDA reported it found that many CBD-labeled products contained very little CBD. Two years later, another study published in JAMA found that in eighty-four CBD products sold online, 43 (51%) had significantly more CBD than advertised, and 26 (31%) had significantly less. Also, 18 of the 84 products (21%) contained THC, with no THC listed on the label. Tests of CBD oil products purchased at stores in Kentucky and online in 2021 found THC present in 5 of 21 (24%) products labeled as “THC-Free.” Among all 80 products tested, 51 (64%) contained THC at levels that could potentially cause people to test positive for marijuana. A 2022 analysis from LeafReport (tinyurl.com/mwx3kfum) analyzed 4,384 products made by 188 different CBD brands. The results were discouraging – 20% of brands do not test their products for pesticides, heavy metals, or microbes (28% did not test for pesticides, 26% did not test for heavy metals, and 24% did not test for microbes). In fact, only 7% of the brands tested for all 3 contaminants. Only 42% of brands test the potency of almost all their products and only 12% of brands had all their products tested within 10% of the stated potency. 88% of all brands had at least one product that tested outside the acceptable potency variance. What’s a consumer to do? According to LeafReport, “Thirdparty lab testing is the only tool at a consumer’s disposal to determine the safety and purity of a CBD product they are considering using.” They add, “It is more important than ever before to choose your CBD products with an abundance of caution.” My favorite independent testing lab is ConsumerLab.com. In their August 2023 CBD report, they reported finding, “CBD in all of the [tested] products (ranging from 2.5 mg to 51.3 mg per serving). However, the cost to obtain an equal
ConsumerLab.com also advises, “Look for CBD products that list the amount of CBD or cannabidiol per serving, and don’t confuse that with the amount per entire bottle. If a product lists only ‘cannabinoids’ it may contain some CBD, but you won’t know how much. Products may still have significant amounts of CBD if they list ‘hemp extract’ as an ingredient, but don’t expect much CBD if ‘hemp oil’ is the only ingredient. Hemp extracts are more likely to contain a range of cannabinoids in addition to CBD (although it’s not clear if this provides added benefit) … If you want to avoid THC, look for products [that] had no detectable THC in our tests. Note that CBD does not appear to be converted to THC in the body.” ConsumerLab.com adds, “CBD cannot be legally sold in the U.S. as a dietary supplement, [however] many CBD products are available. Although it does not appear that individuals have been prosecuted for purchasing these products for their own use, the FDA has issued many warning letters to companies selling products claiming to contain CBD and/or promoting such products as treatments. Warning letters from the FDA in November 2022 indicated that CBD is not permitted to be sold in forms that resemble conventional foods, such as gummies, tea, cookies, lollipops, fruit snacks, hard candies, and pet treats, emphasizing that CBD is not approved for use as a food additive, and expressing particular concern that such forms may appeal to children.” Many states now have medical marijuana laws that permit products with CBD to be sold by approved dispensaries and used for medical purposes recommended by a healthcare professional. In addition, some states without medical marijuana laws allow products that are high in CBD (at least 5%, 10%, or 15% CBD) and low in THC (typically less than 0.3% to 0.9%) to be used for specific medical purposes as approved or recommended by a healthcare professional (see a list of states on ProCon.org).
The bottom line about CBD
Buyer beware. Discuss taking CBD with your family physician and your pharmacist. Be aware that CBD may interact with quite a number of prescriptions, over the counter, or other natural (herb or supplement) medications. There are any number of medication interaction checking sites on the Internet. If you decide to try CBD, start at very low doses, and increase the dose very slowly. Finally, CBD supplements can contain enough THC to cause a positive drug test for marijuana and some branches of the U.S. military forbid the use of any hempbased products. TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG

I
f I close my eyes, I can still see Howida raising herself up off her hospital bed, screaming out her daughter’s name. “Mariam! Oh, God — why did you take her from me?” Howida cried out, then collapsed back into her sheets, mumbling, “Thank you, God. Please forgive me, God. I can’t take any more of this.” On Oct. 20, 2013, two masked militants, armed with a machine gun, rode up to a church in greater Cairo on a motorcycle and attacked a group of Christians waiting outside for a wedding to begin. In the five-minute attack, Howida Azer’s daughter, Mariam Nabil Fahmy Azer, 12, was killed along with her cousin, 8-year-old Mariam Ashraf Mesiha and two adults — one of them the mother of the groom. Several others were wounded. Howida spent roughly a week in a military hospital slipping in and out of a drug-induced delirium while doctors fought to save her legs and life. When she finally came to, her family told her what she already suspected. Her eldest daughter was dead. As a reporter, I have seen death and loss in all their myriad permutations. But even so, I cannot unsee Howida with her head thrown back, screaming at the ceiling of her hospital room begging for an audience with God. I cannot begin to comprehend the depths of Howida’s pain. But what Howida did with her pain in the months that followed the attack was nothing short of miraculous. While still confined to a wheelchair, Howida got on a nationally broadcast television show in Egypt and publicly forgave the men who murdered her daughter. Then she asked other Christians to pray for the killers, “If they used a machine gun or whatever it was to kill my daughter, I want to tell the Egyptian people that we have an even stronger weapon,” she said. “Our weapon is to fast and pray that God would bring these terrorists to repentance.” Wael El-Ebrashy, a venerated Egyptian journalist who conducted the interview, was clearly shaken by her comments. They stood out dramatically in a country full of people, he said, “who know nothing about forgiveness.” “Most people whose kids are killed say they won’t feel better till vengeance is taken, until they kill them with their own hands,” he said, obviously taken aback. “But you have utter forgiveness.”
TODAY’S CHRISTIAN LIVING
NOVEMBER 2023
CAIRO – Hundreds of mourners gather at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in April 2013 at the funeral service of four Coptic Christians killed in Khusus. Two days prior, an imam in Khusus incited villagers to attack Copts. The attack was one of many committed by Islamists around the time Mohamed Morsi, then the president of Egypt, was ousted from power by the military. (Photos provided by and used with permission from Will Morris.)
Ten years have passed since militants killed Howida’s daughter. No one has even been punished for the attack. The Giza church shooting was one of scores of attacks that took place against Christians in a wave of religiously and politically motivated violence that swept over Egypt in 2013. Since that time, in spite of all manner of promises made to the contrary, next to nothing has been done to establish more than the most basic religious rights for Egyptian Christians or to provide them with meaningful protections from the government or radical elements in Egyptian society. In June 2012, Mohamed Morsi, an ardent Islamist, became Egypt’s first democratically elected president, but his term was short-lived. Morsi came to power when Egypt’s long-standing military ruler, President Hosni Mubarak, left office in 2011 after millions of Egyptians took to the streets in protest and demanded an end to the abuses of his almost 30-year regime. Although Mubarak was out, the military junta he belonged to was waiting in the wings, plotting its return to power. In July 2013, after a series of unpopular and undemocratic edicts issued by Morsi, protests broke out once more all over Egypt.
A Christian doctor treats a Muslim patient wounded in antigovernment protests in Cairo in 2013, while a Muslim doctor looks on. During the demonstrations, a group of Christian medical workers who attended Kasr El Dobara Evangelical Church located in downtown Cairo set up a clinic inside the Church with Muslim colleagues to treat demonstrators wounded by the army.
The military capitalized on the chaos and forced Morsi out of office in a coup carefully choreographed to look like a second popular revolution. Islamists were infuriated at the loss of the presidency, and justifiably so. They had gained it fairly through democratic means. They were also enraged at the deaths of hundreds of Morsi supporters killed by the military at ostensibly peaceful demonstrations. Islamists blamed the nation’s Christians for the ouster and for roughly three months they assaulted and killed Christians in scattered attacks across the country. Scores of churches, Christian-owned homes and businesses were destroyed. When the dust finally settled from both the 2011 Revolution and the 2013 Coup-d’etat, Mubarak and Morsi were both gone. Replacing them both was a new military dictator, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. When Sisi came into power in June 2014, he promised that he would address long-standing issues of religious freedom and pluralism. But sadly, the changes have amounted to little more than window dressing. In a characteristicly understated comment by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, “Egypt continues to exhibit systematic and ongoing obstacles to genuine freedom of religion or belief.” Put bluntly, Christians still cannot build churches freely, they are routinely attacked, the government still issues religious identification cards and converts from Islam who live openly as Christians are still being harassed or even jailed. Some progress has been made in easing restrictions on building and renovating churches, but according to the
USCIRF and groups like the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, the progress is qualified. Among other changes, the main change shifted authority to approve church construction away from the president to Egypt’s provisional governors. Supporters of the change say the new law streamlines the process, but detractors claim provincial governors will be unlikely to break the status quo and allow churches to be built. Even when a provincial governor approves church construction under the new law, Christians will still face the inevitable mob of militant Muslims who swarm building sites to block church construction or even burn down churches once they are built. Over the past ten years, attacks on Christians have continued unabated. Most attacks are committed by their own neighbors, members of the Sunni majority inflamed by some perceived Christian grievance. Although attacks are not committed with the same frequency as they were following the 2013 Coup-d’etat, they are committed with the same brutality. And they are met with the same government indifference. In one infamous incident in 2016 in the village of Al-Karm, roughly 300 Muslims attacked Christians over a rumored romantic relationship between a Christian man and a Muslim woman. The mob looted and torched five Christian-owned houses including the home of Souad Thabet Abdullah, the 70-yearold mother of the accused Christian. The mob stripped off her clothes, beat her and then dragged her naked through the streets of her village. Three men were eventually charged in connection with the assault. But after an initial conviction, a subsequent acquittal and a final appeal attempt that was denied in 2021, all three men walked. This was despite Sisi demanding on television that anyone who hurt Abdullah, “No matter how many they are, must be held accountable … all Egyptians are equal in rights and duties.” As bad as the trial was for Abdullah, most Coptic victims never get the opportunity to face their attackers in court. Most are forced into mediation meetings known as “reconciliation committees.” Reconciliation committees are a form of arbitration based on tribal councils where grievances between two or more equal parties can be worked through. It sounds fine in theory, but because the Copts are never on equal footing with their neighbors, reconciliation committees normally amount to nothing more than legalized extortion — surrendering their rights and even their property to restore “peace” with the people who attacked them in the first place.
PRAYER POINTS: PRAY that God will open up Egyptian society and bring peace to the Copts and a wave of openness to Christ among the Muslims. PRAY that the needs of all religious prisoners in Egypt will be met and that they will be released. PRAY that when attacked, Copts will greet the violence with the same spirit as Howida Azer and that Muslims will notice. TODAYSCHRISTIANLIVING.ORG

Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age

Twenty-five-year-old Melanie Carvajal, a hardworking but struggling journalist for a Miami newspaper, loves her Colombian mother but regularly ignores her phone calls, frustrated that she doesn’t understand Melanie’s life. When the opportunity arises for a big assignment that might save her flagging career, Melanie follows the story to her mother’s homeland. She soon realizes Colombia has the potential to connect her to something she’s long ignored: her heritage, the love of her mother, her family, and the richest parts of herself. Colombia offers more than a chance to make a name for herself as a writer. It is a place of untold stories. Inspired by real-life events, An American Immigrant is a story of culture and community, of abiding commitment to family, and of embracing our culture and the generations that have come before.
By Rosaria Butterfield [Crossway] Modern culture is increasingly outspoken against a biblical understanding of what it means to be a woman. Even some Christians, swayed by the LGBTQ+ movement, have rejected God’s word on issues of sexuality and gender in favor of popular opinion. In light of these pressures, it’s more important than ever to help women see the truth about who God created them to be. In this powerful book, Butterfield uses Scripture to confront 5 common lies about sexuality, faith, feminism, gender roles, and modesty often promoted in our secular culture today. Written in the style of a memoir, this book explores Butterfield’s personal battle with these lies as a formerly militant anti-Christian and outspoken feminist. It is interwoven with cultural studies, literary criticism, and theology – to help readers see the beauty in biblical womanhood, marriage, and motherhood. Five Lies of Our Anit-Christian Age confronts current controversial topics while inspiring women to preserve the godly values surrounding womanhood, marriage, and motherhood.

Reflections on Ethnicity and the Sacred Work of Belonging By Tasha Jun [Tyndale House] Tasha Jun has always been caught between worlds: American and Korean, faith and doubt, family devotion and fierce independence. As a Korean American, she wandered between seemingly opposing worlds, struggling to find a voice to speak and a firm place for her feet to land. The world taught Tasha that her Korean normal was a barrier to belonging; that assimilation was the only way she would ever be truly accepted. But if that were true, did it mean God made a mistake in knitting her together? Told with tender honesty and compelling prose, Tell Me the Dream Again is a memoir-in-essays exploring what it means to be biracial in America today, the joy and healing of embracing every part of who we are, and how our identity in Christ is tightly woven with the unique colors, scents, and culture He’s given us. We are not outsiders to God. When we embrace who we were divinely knit together to be, we’ll fully experience His perfect love.
Impossible Christianity By Kevin DeYoung [Crossway] Can we please God and live a happy life in this anxious age? The apostle Paul described the Christian life as a race, but to many believers it feels more like a punishing obstacle course. Fearing they’ll never be able to do enough or give enough or be enough, they see themselves as spiritual failures. But Scripture offers good news: even in ordinary life, Christians can be faithful, fruitful, and pleasing to God. Written in a conversational tone, Impossible Christianity reassures readers they don’t need to feel a collective sense of guilt for past sins and solve every present societal problem. Through biblical wisdom and engaging personal stories, Kevin DeYoung challenges the misconception that we need 40 hours in the day just to be good Christians. By reflecting on what Jesus actually taught about Christian discipleship, readers will be newly encouraged to pursue single-minded devotion to God and find lasting joy in a life of sincere and simple obedience.

Divine Artistry
DEVOTIONAL
O
By Michelle Adserias
n clear, moonless nights I like to huddle in a blanket and watch the stars make their almost imperceptible circuit around some hidden axis. An occasional shooter will cruise across the star-studded track, quickly disappearing into the distant dark. Where it travels from, the things it encounters along the way, and where its journey ends, only its Creator knows. Shooting stars aren’t stars at all. They’re bits of debris left behind by passing comets. As the earth orbits the sun, it passes through comet debris fields. When discarded pieces of comet, more commonly known as meteors, break through the earth’s atmosphere, they quickly burn up – a brief white streak in the night sky. From time to time a chunk of space junk survives its atmospheric trek and hits the earth. I don’t know whether you’ve ever seen a meteorite, but it’s not much to look at – just a big, dark hunk of rock. Only God could take cosmic garbage and transform it into a beautiful shooting star. Only He could make that unwanted fallout into something so lovely people hope to catch a glimpse. Plenty of refuse accumulates in a lifetime. Most of us have a trail of broken promises, unfulfilled hopes, tragic losses, or injustices suffered; a lifetime of hurt to look back on. But when God’s grace envelops us, He makes something glorious of all the ugliness. Think about Joseph’s brothers. For years they carried the burden of beating their brother, selling him into slavery, and telling their father he was dead. That’s a lot of garbage! Yet, God orchestrated everything to His purposes and His glory. Joseph clearly saw God’s grace in all this. In Genesis 50:20 he told his brothers, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” Only our Creator knows the roads we’ve traveled, what we’ve encountered along the way, and where our journeys will end. But He reassures us, He will make a work of art from life’s junkyard. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28

Lori Futcher is a freelance author living in Nampa, Idaho. She has been married to Rob for 26 years and they have two children: Kody (24) and Sierra (18). When not writing or staring at snow globes, Lori enjoys teaching the adult Bible study class at her church.
“H
ey, Mom! I’m home!” I shouted as I walked through the front door. Christmas break had started, and I was ready to hit the pause button on college business. “Oh, what’s this?” I set my suitcase by the door before stepping closer to study the most beautiful snow globe I had ever seen. The manger scene with Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus was magnified by the large globe around it. Below the globe itself, carvings of wisemen and camels added a touch of elegance. “Oh, that?” Mom almost looked embarrassed as she came out of the kitchen to see what I was so enamored with. “I found that while Christmas shopping. I thought you might like it.” “I love it! It’s the most beautiful decoration I’ve ever seen.” I sat down to study the details of the item that had caught my attention, not noticing my mother’s sad eyes as she returned to the kitchen. I didn’t know who my mother had bought the snow globe for. I was unaware she had fallen in love with it and decided to keep it. I was oblivious to the struggle going on in her heart as she decided the snow globe’s fate. On Christmas morning, I opened a box with nothing but tissue paper and a note inside. “Lori, I love you so much. I want you to know everything in this box is yours, including its former contents.” I looked up questioningly, and my mother pointed to the snow globe. Tears filled my eyes as it sank in that my mother loved me so much she was willing to give up something she loved for me. That summer after graduation, I moved up north with my grandparents. I packed my belongings into my new-to-me car, and drove ten hours to Grandma’s house in the woods. I cradled my snow globe carefully in my arms as I headed downstairs to my room. But when I reached for the door, the globe flew from my arms and crashed onto the floor. I screamed in dismay as I watched a puddle form around the remnants of the gift my mother had sacrificed to give me. If my mother had kept this, it would still be intact, I chided myself. I cleaned up the glass, glitter, and water, but I could not bear to throw out the manger scene. I tucked it away in a box and held onto it for years, though I could never look at
it without feeling the heartbreak of knowing I had destroyed something so beautiful. That Christmas, I was given another snow globe. Redemption! But the next summer I moved into my own apartment, and the second snow globe met the same fate as my first. Now I had a reputation as the snow globe killer. The following year my dad gave me a plastic snow globe with a humorous note about finding one I couldn’t break. Seeing that my love for snow globes had not faded, my family began testing me to see if I had matured enough to take care of them. I was given some small globe ornaments, a medium-sized globe with a hummingbird, and even a larger globe with a North Pole scene. But none of them could replace the manger scene I had murdered. Then, one Christmas, my mother-in-law placed a large box on my lap. I discovered a globe similar to my first one; with a manger scene inside. But the wisemen and shepherds at the base were more than carvings. They were 3D, almost-lifelike figures. As I studied the masterpiece closely, I realized there was not one globe, but three. A small globe with two sheep was tucked behind the shepherds, and an angel looked down on the manger scene from a globe on top. As I looked at the artist’s depiction of what we call “the first Christmas”, it hit me how much God gave up to send Jesus to our planet. His sacrifice was infinitely greater than what my mom gave up when she gave me her cherished snow globe. Yet, I have often been as careless with God’s gift as I was with my first snow globe. How grateful I was that both my family—and my God—believed in second (and third!) chances. I gingerly put the work of art back in the Styrofoam it was packed in. Despite my history, my family had trusted me with this beautiful masterpiece, and I wasn’t going to let them down.
LAUGH LINES
O
n a cold day in December, some years ago, a little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the young boy and said, “My, but you’re in such deep thought staring in that window.” “I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,” was the boy’s reply. The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her.
She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel. By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair on the boy’s feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes. She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, “No doubt, you will be more comfortable now.” As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her, “Are you God’s wife?” —From Mikey’s Funnies www.mikeysfunnies.com
