Editor’s Notebook What’s in a name?

W

hat kind of doll do you picture when you see (or hear) the acronym BJD? Is the ball-jointed doll you picture an anime-influenced, waiflike Asian-style BJD? An elegant, superbly outfitted fashion BJD? A cute, mischievous child, tween, or teen like many artist BJDs? A fantasy character?

It’s an unfair question — I might as well ask what you picture when someone says “doll.” BJDs come in all shapes and sizes, from toddlers to grownups (I can’t recall seeing any baby BJDs, but I wouldn’t be surprised). There are elves and other fantasy forms, even BJD animals.

But despite the name, not every doll with ball joints is what today’s doll collectors would think of as a BJD. The common thread that links BJDs isn’t style or subject or materials, either. It’s the fact that they’ve all been designed so that they’re easy to customize, beyond just changing outfits and poses. With artist BJDs, it may be more likely that the customizing is happening on the artist’s end of things, with different choices of wig, eyes, and face-up making a huge difference in individual dolls cast from the same molds.

At the other extreme, some collectors opt for an unpainted doll (and possibly choosing between different options for hands or even heads). They choose the eye color, the wig style, the outfit and accessories, and do the face-up and body details themselves. And later, they can change up those choices, re-creating the doll entirely, if they wish.

As a collectible, dolls have always stood out, because you can do more than just put them on a shelf and look at them. BJDs give collectors even more options, so I expect their appeal and their scope will continue to increase in the future.

A

rdyn is my biggest doll to date. She is 54 cm (21.3 inches) tall and wears a 10/11 wig and 16 mm eyes. This child doll was inspired by a photo of the granddaughter of one of my collectors and is named after her. Her serene face and restful feeling captured my heart.

I began sculpting her a year ago. It took a good deal of time to get her face as I wanted. Then I made her body. She has a lot in common with my Big Baby dolls, but she looks older, her body is more slender, and she is so much fun to dress!

She is my dream about childhood which almost never ends. For me this doll is a representation of a girl before she understands she will be a woman one day.

The innocence and playfulness we had the luxury to keep so much longer than children can do today. She is my longing for the time before puberty, before the teenager’s culture hits you with full force and makes you into something you often don’t even like.

From tall to small

The second doll I’m working on is for the collectors who can’t or don’t want to buy big dolls.

She is just 20 cm (7.9 inches) tall, with a small body and big head. She is my attempt to make a chibi-style character. [Editor’s note: Chibi is a Japanese slang term for a style of caricature where characters are drawn as exaggeratedly short, with stubby limbs and oversized heads].

I always loved this kind of figure, and the chibi style is really cute and appealing to me.

It’s so doll-like, it reminds me about the toys I always wanted and never had as kid. These tiny ones are something which makes me feel like kid again. She will be easy to play with — not too tiny and not too big, with lots of outfits to buy in this size. Makes another great travel doll.

I’m also working on making some improvements on the tween body I have now. I changed the clay I use on that one, because I lose a lot of detail in the casting process, and the new clay makes it possible to not spray and sand so much between the master and casting. I hope to get better results with the small parts, such as hands, feet, and some joints. The body will still be the same size, so older dresses will still fit, but the new body will make me, the maker, happier.

, Laugh, Love’ Kim Arnold’s quirky BJDs embody artist’s motto

O

ver the last decade, home décor designers have seized upon the mantra “Live, Laugh, Love.” The quote appears on mirrors, picture frames, pillows, quilts, and more. Meanwhile, Canadian artist Kim Arnold has created a universe of ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) that embody that same optimistic outlook. It’s impossible for collectors to look at an Arnold doll without wanting to live with one, laugh with one, and love one. Those three essential feelings are at the core of Arnold’s artistry.

“In a world of so much ugliness and bad news, we all need these whimsical, quirky, comical, and adorable dolls in our lives. Everyone needs a huge smile and that feel-good feeling to get us through day after day,” Arnold said. “If I were to come home after a very long and hard workday, and the first thing I saw sitting on a shelf was this happy-go-lucky, adorable, quirky doll, my spirits would lift right up. I would smile from ear to ear.”

Arnold’s dolls, created under the company name The Trinket Box, have provided her with a satisfying life, big laughs, and lots of love from her colleagues and collectors. It’s a wonderful life that she never could have imagined when she was playing with dolls as a young child in Sarnia, Ontario.

There was only one clue that dolls might figure in her adult life, the artist said. “I did play with my Barbie dolls till I was, like, 14 years old. If only I had kept all my Barbie dolls, they would have been worth some money today! Still, I never really thought about sculpting dolls. I always loved dolls, and I did teach porcelain dollmaking, but who would have ever thought I would be where I am today? I’m loving everything about designing my own line of dolls.”

Arnold said she’s only been sculpting seriously for 10 years. Working as a nonemergency first responder for a patient-transfer company, she longed to do something more inspiring and imaginative. She recalled how much she loved her childhood filled with dolls and her porcelain teaching experiences, and she made up her mind to tackle a new doll challenge.

“Within that 10-year time frame, I have learned so much and have improved. Oh, boy, have I improved! From doll number 1, Elf Flower in MSD size, to working on an 18-inch chunky size at this present time, it’s like night and day,” Arnold said. “Everything I see is so much brighter, and customers are very happy with this size.”

A doll enthusiast herself, Arnold knows what she would like to own, and she understands what her customers are craving: “So far, all my dolls that I have done begin as a ball of Sculpey clay. Everything is done by hand, and then the finished pieces are all sent away to the factory where they are primed for the moldmaking process. The factory has been fantastic to work with, and the dolls come back to me in the resin form for finishing.”

In addition to sculpting the oh-so-important faces, Arnold envisions what the dolls will be wearing. Their clothing helps to establish their character and personality. “I design prototype outfits for each size doll I do and then buy all the fabrics and send everything away to be made, for my time is too limited to make all the doll outfits myself,” Arnold said. “I do some custom outfits when my time permits.” Dineke Bolle, of AvaDeenaDesigns, is one of the talented designers that Arnold admires and entrusts with clothing her dolls.

Each of Arnold’s dolls travels to her new home accompanied by the customer’s choice of one wig, one set of eyes, and one outfit set. Arnold also includes a pair of leather boots or shoes made by Russian artist Okcaha Cybopoba. Arnold’s Trinket Box BJDs are marvelously coiffed and clad from head to toe.

“It is very important to me that my dolls leave my hands as complete sets. I care deeply about how they look when I am finished,” Arnold said. “When a customer spends that kind of money on a doll, that doll should look fabulous. I do make custom wigs, but again, I can only do that when I have time. Most wigs I offer are factory-made.”

During the past year, Arnold has challenged herself to conjure up brand-new styles and directions. She considers her Wish & Wash dolls to be part of that unexpected pathway: “My Wish & Wash dolls are ‘a chance taken.’ The doll is super-unique; it’s like nothing I have seen anywhere else, as far as I know. Wish & Wash was just a thought in my head. Why couldn’t I just turn the head cap into another face? I decided to name them Wish & Wash because most of us always have that wishy-washy feeling in life. We wish for great things, but sometimes we feel completely washed out.”

Another new creation for 2019 is Wee Bitty Boo Boo. “I think most customers are all on board for this doll. Still, I’ll have to wait and see what happens with ordering. All my dolls are open editions, because new customers are always coming along, and they might want one of my older dolls. I’m always open to that possibility and I do not want to disappoint,” Arnold said. “One of my plans for the new year is to introduce Polly Petunia in an 18inch size, probably in the early part of the year.”

All Trinket Box BJDs are cast in varying colors of resin. Currently, they are available in three sizes: 12, 16, and 18 inches. In 2020, Arnold plans to add a 24-inch size. Like many other artists, she realizes that her creations are not guaranteed to be successes. However, she is always willing to take that resin risk.

“With any doll, you just never know what is going to be a hit or a miss. I think the appeal in any doll has to be its adorableness, but really,

who knows? I have always been in love with big eyes and a cute mouth. I love full lips or a pouty look or a huge smile,” Arnold said. “I have sculpted dolls that I thought would be a huge success, but which instead backfired on me. Every collector is different, but it’s all by chance, in my opinion.”

In Arnold’s personal life, her loyal husband, Ron, is always there to support her through triumphs and travails. A mother of two grown children, a son and a daughter, Arnold feels “blessed, very blessed” to have her family’s full love and affection. “But I do the dolls all alone. Everyone else has his or her own career.

We are all busy doing our own things. My inspiration could be from daydreaming or lying in bed one night and — bam! — the lightbulb goes off. I can run it by my husband, but he just looks at me with a blank stare,” Arnold said. “I have a mind that never rests. Just ask my family, what makes me tick?”

Nowadays, based in Corunna, a small Ontario town, Kim Arnold has built a life that makes her laugh and that she loves. It is “Live, Laugh, Love” made real. “I have great relationships with my clients, and most everyone has been more than happy with any of the dolls I have offered. I really love my customers, and I am pretty sure they love me, too!”

Madame Alexander’s 1960s celebration of

adame Alexander never ignored the competition, especially in the fast-changing doll marketplace of the 1960s. The scale of miniature dolls had taken some strange twists during this period with fashion dolls moving from 10.5 inches to the new 11.5-inch size — it was a turbulent market situation. Ushered in by Mattel’s Barbie doll, the new standard of 11.5 inches is still in use today for many high-heeled fashion dolls.

One size that didn’t change was the sweet little 8-inch toddler doll. Many companies had used this size since the late 1940s, when the new hard-plastic materials became the order of the day. Virtually unbreakable, 8-inch hard-plastic dolls were made by many companies. The Ginny doll, made by the Right: This gorgeous Scarlett doll appeals not only to doll collectors but to “Gone with the Wind” collectors, as well. This 1967 doll is considered hard-to-find.

Vogue Doll Company, was the leader of the pack. First released in 1951, Ginny would undergo many transformations as the years passed.

None of this was wasted on Madame Alexander. She introduced her own 8-inch toddler doll in 1953 aimed at the carriage trade. Where Ginny was available everywhere, Madame’s Alexander-kins were basically sold in the department stores of the day, usually behind glass. Since both Vogue and Madame Alexander refused to advertise on television, positioning their 8-inch dolls in the marketplace was extremely important.

As the 1950s and 1960s progressed, other companies entered the 8-inch doll race.

Cosmopolitan released Ginger, and other minor companies would often

take a shot at stealing business from each other.

Cosmopolitan secured a coveted and expensive Disney license and made characters from the newly opened Disneyland theme park. Vogue concentrated on little girls and eventually some dolls from foreign lands. With Disney’s It’s a Small World attraction, the concept of dolls representing children of all cultures put Vogue slightly ahead.

By the mid-1960s, it became obvious that Barbie was the only game in town.

Madame tried again with high-heel Brenda Starr and later Yolanda, but despite high-end features such as sleeping eyes and hair play, it was too late. Instead of conceding defeat in this marketplace, Madame decided it was time to do a line of dolls that symbolized our heritage and culture.

Thus the 1967 catalog, and even the little catalogs on the dolls’ wrists, promoted the company’s Americana group. It was a charming tour through the history of our country, with the most fantastic clothing — as usual for Madame Alexander.

While other companies made a few dolls as examples of American culture, none in my opinion, were as well done as those by Madame Alexander.

Using themes ranging from wagon-train days to Scarlett O’Hara to the Amish, the concept was brilliant and very wellreceived by both children and collectors. The series was continued into the 1970s and once again proved true to Madame’s motto: “A thing of beauty is joy forever.” These dolls are a great piece of Americana to add to your collection.

Dolls provide a chronicle of wedding dresses, traditions

oets through the ages portray weddings as idyllic affairs, but some say Queen Victoria began the tradition of the white bridal gown when she married Prince Albert. For collectors, dolls dressed in wedding costumes exhibit beauty, history, and artistry. Iconic dolls can link generations of enthusiasts.

Major doll manufacturers, including Lenci and Madame Alexander, sometimes sold a group of dolls as a wedding party.

“The Collector’s Book of Dolls’ Clothes,” by Dorothy S. Coleman and Elizabeth A. Coleman, described miniature versions of dresses worn by a real bride and her attendants circa 1800s.

Other dolls, like HEbee and SHEbee, or Skippy, occasionally came in formal attire.

Bride-and-groom dolls

In June 1942, when Eleanor married Clifford at an Iowa farmstead (they became my parents), Eleanor bought a small 3-inch bisque bride-and-groom pair for their wedding cake, because they cost less than similar bakery-bought novelties. They cost just 25 cents at Woolworth’s.

Dressed in clever crepe-paper outfits that were pulled into shape and then glued on, the dolls have painted features, blond molded hair, jointed arms, fat tummies, and immobile legs. The word “Japan” is incised on each back. They have always been considered a common mold, for thousands were imported to America.

After the ceremony, the real bridal party feasted on a four-course dinner that Eleanor’s mother, Ada, served. A three-tiered wedding cake, frosted with blue roses and white scallops, was Ada’s crowning touch, and the dolls nestled on the topmost tier. On their first anniversary, Clifford and Eleanor ate the top of their cake, which had been kept frozen to honor this tradition. Eleanor kept the dolls amongst new china in her buffet, where they remained for decades.

Dover published artist Tom Tierney’s “Victoria and Albert Paper Dolls” in 2000. It’s hard to find in America now, but collectors can occasionally find it online through British bookshops. Numerous dolls and costumes in this book depict various life stages of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, their nine children, and two of The Queen’s favorite servants. Tierney also provided detailed explanations.

When my husband-to-be, Mark, and I became engaged, mother said we could use her old dolls on our cake. A doll costumer removed their faded clothing and redressed them authentically in new crepe-paper outfits. The groom wears a black tuxedo with tails, white shirt, bow tie, and lily-of-the-valley boutonniere. The barefoot bride wears a floor-length white ruffle of a gown, accented with a long tulle veil and satin ribbon.

Her paper bouquet is a single white fancy crepe-paper flower, surrounded by two green crepe-paper leaves.

We froze the top tier of our wedding cake for our first anniversary celebration, too, but a winter blizzard with days-long power outage forced us to throw it out. The dolls, however, still display well in the doll room, even though the bride’s gown has a dollop of discolored frosting stuck fast to it, and the groom’s tux has faded.

Paper brides

Paper-doll artists are often inspired to offer up weddings over and over again. In 1949, the Whitman Publishing Company produced No. 4625 Bridal Party, a boxed paper-doll set with a blond bride, brunette maid of honor, handsome dark-haired bridegroom, fun-loving best man, and flower girl. Multicolored plastic stands came with the set. Their costumes follow the fashions of the time: slim sheaths, short bolero jackets, gloves for daytime or special parties, wide ties, jewel-embellished cardigans, and jumpers. Outfits include wedding and party finery, casual clothes, and bedtime apparel.

My grandparents gave me the beautiful Whitman set one Christmas. I was over the moon with the graceful adult models and fancy clothing. My cousins, Marilyn and Shirley, also preferred my Bridal Party over their own child-model paper-doll gifts.

“A man looks pretty small at a wedding. All those good women standing shoulder to shoulder, making sure the knot’s tied in a mighty public way,” wrote playwright Thornton Wilder in “Our Town.” Echoing Wilder, we vied for the privilege of playing with the beautiful bride, for males got short shrift in those preteen years.

When I remove the cover from that yellow and pink box, I am reminded of Shakespeare’s words about a character in King Henry IV. “Fresh as a bridegroom, and his chin new reap’d, showed like a stubble-land at harvest home; he was perfumed like a milliner.” It didn’t take much of an imagination for us to realize the bridegroom’s manliness. My old paper dolls reflect a clean-cut image from a simpler time.

Bridal shower games

Adult guests at bridal showers played like children, too, wrote historian Beverly Gordon, in “The Saturated World” (University of Tennessee Press, 2006), describ-

ing how women used to add meaning to their lives. My mother dried old favors from her friends, gluing them beside matching paper napkins, in scrapbooks. Their quaintness amused me.

Hostesses then probably consulted with Corrinne Wentworth’s “Entertainment for All Occasions: Parties Completely Planned for Evenings, Luncheons, Afternoons, Holidays and Other Occasions” (Barse and Hopkins, 1921). Like a special luncheon or tea, bridal showers were well-choreographed productions cast in elite terms, though middle-class women used them for “plain living and high thinking,” as Ladies’ Home Journal put it. www.dollsmagazine.com

In 1954, artist Hilda Miloche drew “The Paper Doll Wedding” for Whitman Publishing as a Little Golden Book. On the occasion of its 75th anniversary in 2017, Penguin Random House reprinted the activity book. Originals are expensive today, but a reprint, like the one shown here, is less than $10.

If a theme was devoted to the color yellow, for example, a hostess would create her own lighthearted rhyming invitations and placecards. A “dressed” table served custards and egg dishes, angel and sponge cakes, surrounded by a sunny daffodil centerpiece with tiny dolls. For favors, the hostess might turn lipsticks into miniature dolls by adding fanciful yellow crepe-paper skirts, gumdrop heads, and melted-chocolate facial features. Guests thrilled to these pleasing trifles, and games kept everyone amused.

Bridal showers then involved making handmade gifts for the bride that were a pleasure to look at, touch, and use. Indeed, handmade gifts were often the very point of a bridal shower. Children’s parties often include these types of activities now, but back in the day bridal showers fostered community, inclusiveness, sharing, and belonging. Clever and whimsical productions stressed sharing — not wealth, authority, or importance. Everyone felt valued.

Wedding fantasies still occur within the imaginations of the young at heart, whatever our ages. Our girls now pretend-play with Barbie and Tonner, just as I did with Terri Lee, Jill, and Ginny. May the eternal values of love, tenderness, respect, and responsibility never grow dim.

Shows of Note Pullip and Dal Doll Lovers Event June 15, Elk Grove, Illinois Story & photos by Ashley Brooke Sero

N

ow in its 12th year, this year’s annual Pullip and Dal Doll Lovers Event (PUDDLE) celebrated all things Pullip. It isn’t a big convention, but that’s part of its charm. With under 150 attendees, this intimate gathering is a favorite among collectors of Groove’s Pullip, Taeyang, Isul, Byul, Dal, and Yeolume. It’s also common to see dolls like KikiPop, Blythe, Smart Dolls, and other ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) attending, along with their human companions. The theme for this year’s PUDDLE was The Clock Strikes Twelve.

Although it’s a one-day show, there are events scheduled for the day before and after for out-oftown attendees. This year, these included shopping trips to popular doll shop Gigi’s Dolls and Sherry’s Teddy Bears and Japanese marketplace Mitsuwa, along with group dinners. These pop-up activities help to cultivate new friendships before the show even begins!

Morning festivities on the day of the show included the Dress Like Your Doll contest and costume parade, where contestants strutted their stuff alongside their doll-sized mini-mes. Michelle Reisman took home the first prize.

Many attendees left with new custom and stock dolls, fashionable outfits, and fun accessories for their Pullip dolls purchased from the diverse group of vendors. Thrifty attendees also took advantage of the leave-something/takesomething bin, filled with items that were free to whoever wanted them!

There were two panels after lunch. The first, taught by Nicole Feldman, focused on the art of drawing Pullip. The second, taught by Taylor Armstrong, was on Pullip modification. Both were well-attended and informative!

The attendees brought their A games to this year’s customization contest! With many amazing entries speaking to the steampunk theme, the judges had a tough time choosing the winners in the full custom, partial custom, mini, and best in theme categories. Winners included TimmiLynn Johnson, Karen Bullock, Hayla and Jim Nicosia, Mireya De Jesus, Jessica LeBar, Kelsey Nenninger, Harold Santamaria, Gogce Crynen, Mela Rivellini, Lorelei Chadwick, Miranda Santamaria, Melissa Sowers, Dani Walker, Taylor Armstrong, and Rachelle Borso. The coveted Best in Theme award went to Amanda Schwarz’s Bicycle Messenger, which was steeped in steampunk in a simple, classic way.

Judged before PUDDLE, the drawing and photography contest also used steampunk as inspiration. The grand-prize-winning entry, Rusty Cinderella: Love Me the Way I Am, was created by Mela Rivellini. Nicole Feldman won 1st place in the art category with her piece “Gear-Ella and her Fairy Godmother.

The 1st place entry in photography was When the Clock Strikes Twelve by Sarah Schandl, and the fan favorite was Punkie’s Groovy Clock Emporium by Charlene Jenkins.

This year, PUDDLE donated a portion of its special raffle proceeds to MakerGirl, an organization striving to inspire girls to be active in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In addition, attendees brought in new dolls to donate to Marillac St. Vincent Family Services’ Christmas Store.

Over the past three years, PUDDLE has donated nearly 200 dolls to the cause.

Q A

This cloth doll is not marked. I have been told that it may be an Italian Lenci doll, but no one to whom I showed it was sure. Can you help me make a positive identification?

Yes, your doll is definitely a Lenci! Elena Scavini, whose nickname was Lenci, started to make dolls during World War I while her husband was away serving in the army. After the war, the Scavinis went into fulltime doll manufacturing. Their 1920 catalog showed 50 different designs. Lenci dolls were high-quality luxury items.

A 19-inch doll could retail for as much as $20.

Smaller dolls sold for under $10, but that was still a substantial amount at that time.

In the mid-1930s, the Scavinis experienced hard financial times due to a series of mishaps and war between Italy and Ethopia.

This called for some economies, and a new line of dolls was developed that could be produced at a lower cost. This group had names as defined by their sizes and Above and right: 19-inch Lenci Benedetta from the 1930s.

faces, rather than model numbers, like most of the earlier Lenci dolls. Their faces are all similar, with more of a dolly look than a character one.

Lucia was 14 inches, Laura was 16 inches.

Mariuccia was 17 inches.

Benedetta was 19 inches.

Henriette was 25 inches.

These dolls are lovely, but they do not have all of the fine details of the early dolls. The complete doll was no longer all felt; woven cloth was used for the body and felt only for the head. The legs were not shaped with multiseams. Face painting was attractive but lacked some of the detail of the eyes and mouths. For the most part, the costumes were not as elaborate, with fewer cut-out felt decorations, applied flowers and ruffles, and hats. Shoes were a simpler design. Mohair was used for wigs, but the hairstyle was often simpler.

Your doll is the 19-inch Benedetta. We are showing a Benedetta from our Foulke archives.

Like yours, she has a beautiful face, with brown painted eyes featuring eye shadow, stroked upper and lower lashes, and white dot highlights. Her hair is in a simple style with braids. Her attractive outfit consists of a green felt jumper with applied flowers and quilting stitch with a matching hat, not as elaborate as earlier Lenci outfits, but still very appealing. This model is not an easy one to find and makes a lovely addition to your doll collection. Enjoy her!

Cleaning out some boxes in my grandmother’s closet, my mother found this box of little dolls. Do you know who made them and how old they are?

These little all-bisque dolls are referred to by collectors as “flappers.” They date from the 1920s and represent a new style of doll which came into vogue after World War I. Society underwent drastic changes at this time, and the flappers were the “new women” of the era. They were reflected in dolls that presented a teenager with slender limbs, rather than the young chubby child of traditional dolls.

These particular dolls were part of the large output of the Hertwig & Co. porcelain factory in Germany. The basic doll was jointed at the shoulders and hips. It had molded hair and painted features. There were hundreds of variations of clothing. The bride-and-groom figures were popular models and were often used as wedding tokens. This is a lovely set — all factory-original costumes, with the bonus of still being tied in the original box. As a plus, the male doll has the added feature of a molded top hat. I hope you will enjoy preserving these family heirlooms!

At a recent doll show, a man was selling his mother’s dolls.

All were mint condition. This brunette Barbie especially stood out because she was beautiful, but also she had on a spectacular fashion (red is my favorite color). Is there more to this doll than just a pretty face?

A

Your doll is from 1961 and the previous owner really took excellent care of her. Some dolls from this time period get what’s known as a “greasy face” caused when the plastic weeps. This can easily be cleaned with alcohol on a cotton swab — just avoid rubbing hard on the make-up. The previous owner also used replacement earrings that won’t turn Barbie’s ears green from a reaction between the metal and the vinyl.

Now for the fun part — the outfit consists of a gorgeous red velveteen coat lined in white satin. The coat was a direct copy of a Balenciaga design. In an interview with Ruth Handler in 1989, I asked her why the coat, complete with pillbox hat and matching purse (Red Flair #969), was made for several years.

Her reply was that Red Flair was the best-selling outfit at the time, and so it was kept in the line.

But you have another surprise in store! Under that coat is a red velveteen strapless top with a white satin full attached skirt. It is #977 Silken Flame, and it goes perfectly with the coat! You really did quite well with this great purchase.

Madame Alexander Blue Boy sample

Q

I recently bought this doll at an auction, in a lot with other things. He looked different from the Blue Boy I had at home.

His suit is blue corduroy, and mine is blue satin. He also came in a box with “sample” written in pencil. Could this doll be a sample, as the box indicates?

A

Yes, I believe your doll is a sample. He is 12 inches tall, with rooted hair and sleep eyes. The body is hard plastic; the head is vinyl. He is part of the Portraits of History collection. These dolls were shown in the 1983 catalog. I imagine that your sample doll was not made because the satin outfit obviously looks more like the famous painting.

It was usually the policy at The Alexander Doll Company to make samples to be shown not only to Madame but to costing, marketing, and of course the design team. Considered by many to be a valuable treasure, others look at a sample doll as a reject. I have seen some of these sample dolls sell for $500 or more, and some for almost nothing. As Madame often said, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” What a great treasure you’ve gained, in my opinion!
