Be ye doers There once was a man who prided himself as a master gardener. If asked he could identify a plant giving you its common name as well as its Latin genus and species. He was well read in all the prominent gardening books and subscribed to all the seed catalogues. He had a tool for every gardening need and carefully organized them so that each was in its proper place in relation to the rest.

However, there was one thing curious about this master gardener, he never gardened. Not once in his whole life did he plant a tomato plant or prune a rosebush. In fact, his yard was nothing but rocks and worse filled with weeds. “What nonsense!” you say. “In what sense could he be called a master gardener?”

What does it essentially mean to be a Christian and a Christian community? Bible studies, programs, social gatherings, mission trips are all means to an end and are not the end in themselves. They are the tools of the

trade, but to reduce the trade down to these tools … well its shear nonsense.

A Christian is one who sows the seeds of God’s Word and love into the lives of others. A Christian is one who nurtures and brings out the good in another person. A Christian is one who rejoices when another person bears the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. A Christian is one who works in the harvest of the Father.

Let us be doers of the Word and not merely hears of the Word.

Operation Christmas Child It's Christmas in July! Thanks to your generosity 333 Operation Christmas Child boxes were packed which means that 333 children heard the Gospel message and celebrated Christmas. With your help we can do more this year!

In addition to our normal supplies for the boxes, this year we are introducing a new item, "The Shoe that Grows". Our goal is to provide a “Shoe that Grows” in each of the DHPC boxes! On Sunday, July 29 we will have our starter boxes available so you can begin shopping as well as the details for how you can support "The Shoe that Grows" program.

WORSHIP UPDATE FROM LIKEWISE WORSHIP COLLECTIVE As you may know, DHPC is working with Likewise Worship Collective to launch a new and vibrant worship service at DHPC. We have also contracted with Likewise for exclusive recruitment for a new Contemporary Music Director; and the Search Team, under the leadership of Laurann Cook, is active.

Likewise is moving forward to make modifications in the Fellowship Center beginning May 21, which include making the sound board portable, installing new speakers, upgrading the computer and software, and designing the space with bold adjustments to the staging and the overall space to meet the visual goals needed for this kind of service. Many of the changes will NOT be permanent so the room maintains flexibility. Other changes will include the entryway into Fellowship Center, adjusting the platform location to the opposite wall, and creating a visual backdrop. We are still working through some details. We hope to have changes made in a timely manner once the work begins. We are fortunate that Richard Cook and Toby Payne are very invested in assisting with this project.

Lighting upgrades were already in consideration because replacement parts are no longer available – at least 56 lights need to be replaced. This will be completed with Toby and Richard taking the lead. This is not part of the budget al-

located to the Likewise project, but the plan is to make the changes while we are already working in the room.

Some of us recently attended a concert in Phoenix where one of our consultants, Justin Unger, was a performer. We experienced Justin’s ministry first-hand and were truly inspired by his heart, songs, and musical gifts. Justin’s personal website is: justinunger.com. We know you will see that the men from Likewise are top quality, experienced people who love God and desire to share the gospel through music.

We are thankful for our partnership with Likewise, who has a proven track record of starting and building intergenerational worship services that fit the values of the respective church family, all doing so while opening eyes and hearts to transformational opportunities. We continue to seek your prayers as we trust God to lead us in this new chapter for Desert Hills Presbyterian Church.

Global Children's Choir The arrival of the Children of the World International Children’s Choir brought a breath of fresh air to the DHPC campus on Tuesday, April 3. This energetic group of children from Nepal, Guatemala, Nigeria, and the Philippines was full of the joy of the Lord, and excited to meet us and learn more about us. They were anxious to share their God-given talents in singing praises to Him. The concert in Fellowship Center on Wednesday, April 4, highlighted their talents in singing and dancing. Through multi-media, we were able to see the impoverished living conditions from which the children come, and to hear their testimonies of how Jesus transformed their lives. In response, they seek to transform the lives of others by bringing awareness to disadvantaged children around the world. Those who attended made a generous donation to support the children’s ministry. They also had the opportunity to sponsor children through the WorldHelp organization.

After departing from DHPC, the choir was on the road again to finish their ten-month tour of the United States. At the completion of the tour, the children will receive scholarships to further their education. In fact, one of the teachers that travel with the children was a previous participant and, as a result of the scholarship program, was able to complete her teacher training.

DHPC was truly blessed to host the Children of the World International Choir. We were honored to be able to bless them, as they continue to spread blessings along the way.

DHPC hosts thoroughly enjoyed the delightful young people.

Susan and Eddie Smith, Carolyn and Lynn Oates, Shelly and Scott Core, Chris and Jim Scotti, and Carol and John Williams had the privilege of becoming better acquainted with them. Upon taking two of the boys to the Scotti’s home, it was heartwarming to find four of the girls already in the pool, shrieking with joy, splashing around with the Scotti’s puppy, Biscotti.

4 Basic Steps to Food Safety at Home 1. Clean

Always wash your food, hands, counters, and cooking tools.

• Wash hands in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds.

Do this before and after touching food.

• Wash your cutting boards, dishes, forks, spoons, knives, and counter tops with hot soapy water. Do this after working with each food item.

• Rinse fruits and veggies.

• Clean the lids on canned goods before opening.

2. Separate (Keep Apart)

Keep raw foods to themselves. Germs can spread from one food to another.

• Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from other foods.

Do this in your shopping cart, bags, and fridge.

• Do not reuse marinades used on raw foods unless you bring them to a boil first.

• Use a special cutting board or plate for raw foods only.

3. Cook

Foods need to get hot and stay hot. Heat kills germs.

• Cook to safe temperatures: -Beef, Pork, Lamb 145 °F -Fish 145 °F -Ground Beef, Pork, Lamb 160 °F -Turkey, Chicken, Duck 165 °F

• Use a food thermometer to make sure that food is done.

You can’t always tell by looking.

4. Chill

Put food in the fridge right away.

2-Hour Rule: Put foods in the fridge or freezer within 2 hours after cooking or buying from the store. Do this within 1 hour if it is 90 degrees or hotter outside.

• Never thaw food by simply taking it out of the fridge.Thaw food: -In the fridge -Under cold water -In the microwave • Marinate foods in theDfridge.

Three DHPC and LEUPP PC Veterans Have Their Stories Published and Are Honored at Annual Veterans Reception

shown of the story of one of the 4 remaining survivors of the bombing of the USS Arizona during WWII. A high school choir sang patriotic songs. It was a happy and uplifting time of applause and recognition for all the Veterans present.

What an amazing day Sunday, April 8th was!!! The Veterans Heritage Project held their annual Phoenix Edition 1 Reception and Book Signing Event to celebrate and honor the veterans whose stories are published in this year’s book, “Since You Asked” 2018, Phoenix 1 Edition. Out of hundreds of attendees, about 35 people attended from both churches!

Many of the Navajo guests drove the 6 hour round trip that day just to attend the reception, and some of the women wore traditional Navajo clothing to bring attention to the contributions the Navajo Nation has made and continues to make to our country’s military service.

The Book Signing portion of the event had all the Veterans whose stories were published in this year’s book seated around the perimeter of the large conference room. Everyone else went around the room with their own copy of the book, getting the Veterans to sign their names on their story’s title page. There were many special moments as youth and adults took the opportunity to individually thank each Veteran for their service as they signed their book.

Touchingly, the typical response from the Veterans was a humble one, emphatically thanking the book holders for the recognition and support of Veterans.

DHPC has its own chapter in this worthy organization, and through its efforts three veterans from Desert Hills Presbyterian Church and our sister church, Leupp Presbyterian, were interviewed and their stories were written and included in the publication! Another DHPC veteran, Jim Blakeslee, was also interviewed by another chapter, and his story appears in another edition. (He was honored at the Northern Arizona Reception and Book Signing Event.) Their stories and recorded interviews are also deposited for posterity in the national archives of the Veterans History Project in Washington, D.C.

Below are the four Veterans from DHPC and LPC whose stories were published this year, with an excerpt from each of their stories. A copy of both editions may be borrowed from the church library, and the Phoenix 1 Edition from our local public libraries. Be sure to read their stories; you’ll find them sometimes humorous, sometimes introspective, sometimes sad, but you will definitely be enriched by their lessons in history and of life.

Rhonda Noble Troop Care Ministry VHP Chapter Advisor

This year’s theme was a tribute to WWII Veterans. WWII Veterans and their families were invited to the private Ring Of Honor Reception prior to the public Reception and Book Signing. They were then escorted into the main event, as a procession, to be seated in the front seats. Since our Leupp WWII Code Talker, Veteran George B. Willie, Sr. had passed away during the writing of his story, his grandson, Randall Smallcanyon (a USMC Veteran himself) represented George. Randall wore his Marine Corps dress uniform, and stoically carried a framed portrait of George while escorting his grandmother, George’s widow Emma Jean, down the aisle; the rest of the family walked behind the two. It was a touching scene seeing the family fulfilling an honor for George, knowing how difficult it was for them with the pain of their recent loss. There were tears of sorrow shed, but also hugs of thankfulness and joy that DHPC had taken a part in honoring George and preserving his story.

The program recognized the roomful of Veterans by the era they served. There was a special panel of past student interviewers and previously interviewed veterans, who spoke of how the experience has affected their lives in the sharing of stories of service and sacrifice for our country, and in the building of relationships between generations. A video was

VETERAN CHRISTOPHER HEYDRICK

Jim Blakeslee was interviewed by two students who attend Boulder Creek High School, Elisa Clark and Sarah Santiago. The high school is associated with a different VHP region than ours, so his story appears in the Northern Arizona Edition. Jim served in the US Army in the states and in Germany during World War II, from September 1943 – May 1946. He shared how his life has been one miracle after another from the day he was born, and describes many instances where he saw God’s hand in protecting him from all harm during the war. Jim gives credit and thanks to God for the many blessings he has received.

Christopher Heydrick served in the US Navy during the Cold War, 1954 to 1958. He sailed through the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. Katelyn Noble, a 7th grader in our church, wrote his story of what it was like for a new recruit to join and serve on the ship USS Taconic, and the life lessons he took away from that experience. VHP has been a special experience for both veteran and author; now that he is legally blind, Chris is especially thankful to recall all the beautiful sights and sounds of the amazing places he got to see, and Katelyn has learned from her church “Grandpa” what to do when times get difficult or stressful.

Miracle After Miracle

The man behind Jim fell and his bayonet hit Jim in his cartridge belt. It was a glancing blow that broke the man’s 16-inch WWI bayonet off at the hilt…”

When Problems Come Up, Remain Calm

“Christopher Heydrick was born December 29, 1935, in Franklin, Pennsylvania, where he was raised. In 1954, when Mr. Heydrick was in 12th grade, his younger brother (who was in 10th grade) died in a gun accident, while out target shooting with his friends. It left a traumatic impression on him; he just wanted to forget about his brother’s death, so he left the area as soon as he could after graduation. His uncle had been in the Navy in WWII, so he chose the Navy because it sounded adventurous and it would be a good way to escape from his sorrow… “ Excerpt from “Since You Asked,” 2018 Phoenix 1 Edition

VETERAN ALLEN TODACHEENIE

VETERAN GEORGE B. WILLIE, SR.

Allen Todacheenie, who attends our Navajo sister church, Leupp Presbyterian Church, graciously shared his personal story of military service in the US Army from January 1968 to February 1970. Allen was stationed in Vietnam following training at Fort Ord. Most of his time in Vietnam was spent as a gunner on supply convoys to the front lines; when he wasn’t doing that, he was repairing truck tires. He told of the huge contrast of Vietnam’s culture and landscape to that of his high desert home. He spoke of some of his experiences fighting in Vietnam, the difficulties of transitioning back to civilian life, the sad realities of Post Traumatic Stress that most combat veterans have to deal with after war (and the rest of their lives), and dealing with the effects of toxic Agent Orange. Rhonda Noble was privileged and honored to record his story—and wise words of advice—so others may know of his service and sacrifice to our country. Thank you, Allen, for letting us write your story! May it be a story of hope and encouragement to all combat veterans, and a lesson of understanding and compassion to all those who are spared the experience of fighting in a war.

God bless the family of WWII Veteran and Navajo Code Talker George B. Willie, Sr., USMC. George passed away during the writing of his story, but the family represented him well at the VHP Reception and Book Signing. And it was quite appropriate, as his story revolves around the fact that George kept his identity as a Code Talker secret for about 50 years because “They told me not to tell.”

He served in the US Marine Corps from December 1943 to July 1946. It was his grandson Randall Smallcanyon’s school assignment to write about a veteran in his family that he admired, and show proof of service, that was the catalyst to discovering his cheii (grandfather) was a national hero and treasure! Randall, a USMC veteran himself, signed Randall’s name as the boy in the story.

His mother, Annabelle Smallcanyon, was instrumental in connecting her father, George, with the WWII Navajo Code Talker Association, and supporting him in their activities. It was Rhonda Noble’s privilege and honor to write George’s story for VHP, and many thanks go to the family, including Randall, Solomon Tsosie, Lisa Smallcanyon, and especially to dear Annabelle for helping with interpreting, explaining Navajo culture, and answering a lot of questions! It was difficult for the family to be there without George, but they showed up in force to represent and honor him, and we really appreciated that!

They Told Me Not To Tell

“When asked if he was wounded during the war in Vietnam, Allen Todacheenie replies, “No.” No, he wasn’t hit by a bullet or a grenade. He didn’t have any physical wounds that anyone could see. And yet, something was wrong. His home is just over 600 miles east “as the crow flies” from Fort Ord in Monterey Bay, California, where he was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1970, and yet, it took him well over a year to finally make it home….”

“After some research, Annabelle discovered that the secret of the Code Talkers and their code had not been declassified until 1968, decades after the end of the war, but it was declassified! She learned there was a Code Talker Association, that the men met every month in Gallup, New Mexico, and they wore distinct uniforms signifying them as Navajo Code Talkers. For years, these men had been receiving recognition for their tremendous contribution to the success of the war, making appearances at events, and even riding in the front of parades!

When presented with all this information, George was astounded, and finally spoke the words out loud that yes, he was a Code Talker. The reason he never told anyone?

‘They told us to never talk about it, and we took an oath that we never would.’ George kept his promise, but now he could talk about his experience, and he began to slowly open up, sharing the secrets he held so deep inside all his life…”

The Veterans Heritage Project was recently nationally recognized for it’s program of “Connecting Students with Veterans” who have served our great nation throughout history. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society presented the Community Service Hero Award on March 23, 2018 in Washington DC in conjunction with National Medal of Honor Day. The Society specifically cited the innovative program for providing students with an enriching educational experience by connecting them with U.S. military veterans in a nationally renowned oral history and publication program.

Thousands of veterans oral histories have been donated to the Library of Congress. VHP Founder, Barbara Hatch, proudly accepted the award on behalf of all the students, teacher advisors, chapter advocates, and veterans who constantly volunteer to fulfill the VHP mission. Each Chapter, including DHPC, were awarded a beautiful Plaque commemorating their individual contribution to this achievement at the recent VHP Book signing event covered in the adjoining article. The Plaque will be proudly posted next to the Veteran’s Board in Fellowship Hall by Your Troop Care Ministry (TCM) committee for all Church members to view.

Circle the Wagons Group has been hosting coffees, movies and Artfest visits and monthly dinners out at local restaurants. The most popular event has been the monthly dinner out. We have been continuous for fifteen months. Most recently we had ribs, chicken, scalloped potatoes and green beans at the Bacan restaurant. It was a wonderful day with a nice breeze that made for a perfect evening on the patio. Each month everyone that wants to have fun, laughs and meet new people is welcome. We meet at different restaurants to promote Christian fellowship.

Our next visit is scheduled for our yearly celebration of everyone's birthday. It will be held at the Horny Toad Restaurant in Cave Creek on Tuesday, June 5 at 4:30. We will meet Tuesday, July 10 and Tuesday, August 7th at area restaurants. Information will be posted. Everyone is invited, come and join us.

We have families that attend DHPC with children and teenagers. We continue to have young families visit all the time.

Young people are here!

Continuing in Faithful, Gospel Ministry Trends in life, culture, and church ministry come and go.

Some are “old school” and others are rewrapped versions of things done in the past to give it a fresh coat of paint. Whether you lean more on the programmatic side or rely heavily on relational strength and equity, the question is still the same: How do we get young people in the church?

We just welcomed 3 young women as members of the church through confirmation. They are fun, energetic, intelligent, and full of life. Get to know them and invite them and their family out to lunch sometime after church.

We have a growing Boy Scout Troop that we charter and are involved with. We helped boys get their aviation, chess, and automotive maintenance merit badges. These are some incredible young men that meet on our campus every Tuesday

At DHPC our vision is to reach families and not just the students. We may initially go after the teens but the hope is that we would make inroads with their peers and then the parents. We continue in this vital ministry to create pathways and bridges for young people to feel safe around adults and at DHPC to explore their faith in a genuine way. This summer we are working to create places where teenagers and their friends will want to gather, where they can develop relationships with safe leaders, and point them to life-altering relationship in Jesus.

What A Lot of Fun! Boy Scout Troop 630 meets at DHPC and some of our members have been helping these young men as Merit Badge Counselors. What a great opportunity for DHPC members to share their life long experiences and talents.

Recently, nine of Troop 630’s finest, earned their Aviation Merit badge. This Merit Badge required the scouts to understand and experience the fundamentals of flight, aircraft controls, careers in aviation, airport operations, and as a final requirement – perform an actual aircraft preflight and fly in a light aircraft. For one of the scouts, it was his first flight in any type of aircraft.

Curry Taylor and myself had the pleasure of being the Merit Badge Counselors for these future aviators. It was an absolutely great time. I am confident that we got more out of it than the scouts, as I am sure is the case for all counselors.

There are more than 100 different Boy Scout Merit Badges, everything from Archeology to Genealogy to Music to Pets.

Children’s Ministry CHILDREN’S MINISTRY RECONSTRUCTION

Hello Parents and DHPC Family! We are excited to tell you about our plans in Children’s Ministry for the summer and what we have been doing recently. We have adopted a new curriculum based on The Jesus Storybook Bible, which will run 10 months out of the year. It is a wonderfully Jesus and grace centric study for kids. If you don’t have a copy, we are giving them away for free to our families.

Typically, in the we take the months of June and July we do not have Sunday school for our little ones. We encourage kids to be in the service and provide materials for them to work on during the sermon. We would like to try something different this summer!

We want to host our little ones, ages 3 to 2nd grade, to come back as usual and join us for a special 2-month time in learning about worship and The Lord’s Prayer! We will provide instruments for children to play along with us as we sing songs and begin to learn about what The Lord’s Prayer is and why we should pray! We hope you and your family will join us this summer at either the 9am or 11am worship services for your kids to grow in their love of worship and Jesus.
